went to kinokuniya today in town to buy bungo stray dogs manga on a whim and came across this shelf stocked with the secret history aka probably my fav book ever and seeing the different editions was so exciting. the 30th anniversary hardcover has really great large text that's easier on the eyes and a nice golden book spine with silver embossed printed text. i really love the black version with the big white words - it feels so grand and just has that elegant feel to it ... i imagine carrying it around and reading it on public transport just to show it off lol. and then there is also the original first edition cover version below which is classic and very similar to the secondhand copy i already have. i love the dark purple back cover of this edition too!
also here's the bsd manga volumes i got
i already bought a bunch of the other volumes online (the cheaper ones which are printed for the malaysia and singapore market) but i've always been curious about the american yen press versions so i had to get at least one version and what better version to get than the very first volume? the other one is from the dead apple manga adaptation series. i only got vol 3 (because of the chuuya cover art, duh) and also because i've exceeded my monthly budget for book buying rip T_T
but on my next trip to the bookstore maybe i'll get vol 1, 2 and 4 (once it comes out) because dead apple is really cool and i love the art style
the bookstore visit was so fun i don't go out to bookstores much anymore since starting full time work but today i got to look for all those books i read digitally or those on my tbr list and i flipped through the physical copy and admired the cover art 🥰 i was super happy
#mine#ah i found osamu dazai's no longer human and i forgot to take a picture of it#but it felt so special finally seeing the book in person#it felt like i was completing some sort of bsd fan pilgrimage to the bookstore to find dazai's book#and i saw daisy jones & the six and yellowface too!#plus the manga section was really huge i loved looking at all the colourful bookspines of the volumes#there was black butler and a small section of psychopass#the bsd section was huuuuge there were so many bsd wan volumes#oh and black butler was put together with it too#i forgot to search for moriarty the patriot#but i did find the danmei section#didn't find the mdzs manhuas though maybe next time i'll go search for it

U DID GOOD NAILA. THE KITE RUNNER IS WORTH THE TEARS AND YOUR SISTER WILL THANK YOU IN THE FUTURE. have u read hosseini's other books?? i've yet to read a thousand splendid suns but i did read and the mountains echoed and i enjoyed it! but the kite runner will always be my first love.
GODDDDD YES amir's road to redemption was a long and hard one but it was so worth it!!!! i read the book when i was in middle school and the alleyway scene (u know the one) scarred me for life ahahahaha :) and i know about the movie!!! but i haven't watched it yet bc the book hollowed out my heart and then stuffed it with feels and i don't think i can handle experiencing that agony again orz (AND I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE GRAPHIC NOVEL BUT NOW THAT I DO IMMA CHECK IT OUT)
i have so many books with two copies that i even gave the extra copies away to my friends at school who wanted them lmao.
we have a similar bookstore where i live too!!! except that it's not one bookstore but several stores wall to wall spread over one area. the ceilings are low af and it's basically just criss crossing alleyway after criss crossing alleyway that are super narrow and connected to each other with bookstores on either side. there's no ventilation and you WILL sweat like a sinner in church if you stand (zero space so no room for seats) in one place for too long. but there's tons of books and they're all second-hand and pirated and super cheap!!! i love second-hand books bc they feel "broken in" and have that old book smell which i love. plus a lot of the times the previous owners write down stuff in the books that's super fun to go thru lol. bonus points if the previous owner is an english lit student bc they always write interesting stuff in the margins which i love to read!!! i've been to the bookstores so often they even recognize me and give me discounts :'D
THE KITE RUNNER STILL FUCKS ME UP, AND IT'S BEEN A GOOD TEN YRS SINCE I READ IT!! and i just got mindhunter, i'm gonna start it soon! i intended to do it before but only just got reminded of it after i rewatched the show with my sister.
OH MY GOD SAME NAILA. AND IT'S BEEN YEARS SINCE I READ IT AS WELL!!!! i still remember the last passage of the book describing amir's smile that's as wide as the valley of panjsher (yes i STILL remember this bit word for word bc this book is seared into my brain) and how he runs after the kite and it just makes my heart fucking SWELL U FEEL ME?????
mindhunter's amazing!!!! i'm actually watching the series rn (only two more episodes to go and I'm done with s1!). i have two copies of this book and there's a funny story behind that. one time my mom went to america for work reasons, and i gave her a list of books to buy from there (bc a lot of the books i want to read aren't available where i live and on top of that amazon doesn't even deliver some items here). and the list included mindhunter. my mom also visited a friend's daughter who had permanently settled there and become a lawyer, and she graduated only recently so she still had the books she read in uni (or ✨COLLEGE✨ as 'muricans like to call it i suppose). my mom told her about my interest in law and criminology so the lady was kind enough to give my mom the books she didn't need anymore. (seriously that was actually so nice of her i feel indebted to her even to this day ;;w;;)
and one of those books was mindhunter.
this was after my mom had already bought a copy of the book, and she hadn't even realized what had happened lmao. so later she came back home, i began sorting thru my haul of books and saw that there were two copies of mindhunter (but different editions so i don't mind at all lmao), brought it to my mom's attention, and then we both lamented the dollars she wasted to buy the book rip (and then very quickly forgot about it lol)
#thelegendofwinchester#also I totally understand what you mean about feeling divorced from your own country#none of my loved one have died (I hope you're doing ok naila!!!) but my country is in general a fucking shit hole#there's so much poverty and the politicians here are absolutely demented and it's basically a dictatorship here#the quality of life here is absolutely abysmal and I just want to get OUT#half the reason why I'm a hermit is bc the things you witness on the streets when you go out of your house is absolutely disheartening#so yeah if I ever leave I'll be sad to say goodbye to those lovely bookstores but man. It'll be worth it.#I'll just buy books from kinokuniya lol. they're great.#also before anyone loses their shit over the pirated books thing: pls keep in mind that the general population of my country is dirt poor#and buying original copies would literally empty their wallets. I'm pretty sure we even have a law allowing the sale of (foreign) pirated#books bc of this#and YES I LOVE MY LIL BSU FAMILY!!!! I love bill and holden's bond sm!!!!#if u found all the bureaucracy in s2 tiring then buckle up when reading about the atlanta investigations in the book bc HOOOOO BOY#and yeah I heard that holden's panic disorder gets pushed to the side in s2 which is :/ but what can u do about it smh#I WANT A S3 SO BAD NAILA I WANNA SEE HOW THEY DEAL WITH THE BTK KILLER (since the real douglas retired way before the btk killer was#caught. so I wanna see how they connect holden to this case u feel me)#I DIDN'T GET TO WATCH 3 IDIOTS 😭😭😭 MID TERMS ARE COMING UP AND I'M SO S T R E S S E D#I pulled all nighters during eid vacation to study :) this is my life now :)

10 Dance merch!
I think I've said before in some other posts that the lack of proper merchandise for 10 Dance makes me sad. I'm a collector, I need stuff to show my fandom, and I can only buy the manga so many times (I mean, I'm eventually going to own the newer chapters four times over, with buying the digital magazines they're in, the Japanese digital manga release, the physical Japanese manga release, and, when it finally comes out after a million delays, the English digital release). Though the series seems popular enough despite its fairly niche status--enough so that it gets special edition releases for its manga, as well as special events such as the Real 10 Dance--there aren't any figures or accessories made for it that you can just go to a store and buy. The only merch produced so far has been items that were sold at special events, or bonus items from purchasing the manga from certain retailers, so they can only be found secondhand. I'd been hoping to go back to Japan at some point so I could search the used shops for them, but there was a conversation on the discord where someone brought up Yahoo Japan Auctions, and I was like, Oh ShiT why didn't I think of that before. And thus, I proceeded to go spend a bunch of money like the desperate collector I am.
The top row includes a folder and pins, a bonus card from Animate, some postcard sized illustrations, a Kinokuniya ad, and some paper copies of bonus comics. Across the bottom are some larger sized paper versions of bonus comics, some sketched pages with messages from Inouesatoh, and the comic/ad for Burn the Floor.
Look below for some closeup images, plus a summary of the one comic here that I've never seen before since it hasn't been included in any of the volumes!
(sorry if any of these look slightly "dirty", I used my scanner, but didn't bother to clean up the images at all :P)
I love this Kinokuniya ad. Based on the outfits, it has to be from the World Championships when Sugiki (recklessly lol) kissed Suzuki backstage. It's so funny how Suzuki looks kinda pissed, like, "ugh, I can't believe this guy is slipping me tongue, I'm so not into this 'cause I'm so straight and so into women," and then later in the evening, was being bombarded with gay thoughts that he couldn't escape.
The last image here is a manga that was given out as a bonus item for buying the first set of drama CDs through a BL merch site called Comi Comi Studio:
Suzuki asks Aki if she’s gained weight, and when she responds negatively and angrily, he then wonders why her tits are sticking out so much. Aki says that Suzuki told her that Sugiki must like women with large breasts (as Suzuki thinks, “I did?”), and since she’s finally been allowed to dance with him lately, she’s making them more prominent. Suzuki thinks it’s weird, saying that a guy would never emphasize his dick just to make someone like him more.
…and then we flash forward to later that night, where Sugiki is angrily asking Suzuki to explain why he looks so prominent down below, and wonders if there’s something he’s trying to tell him. Suzuki apologizes profusely, saying he just did it on a whim.
That's all I have to share for now, though I'm sure I'll cave and buy more stuff at some point ^_^;;

"How can I support the manga industry?": A Comprehensive Guide for American Fans
There are plenty of ways that you can support the manga and light novel industry but since I've never lived in a Country outside of America, this guide will be aimed primarily at my fellow yanks. But, if you have any tips for your fellow manga fans in your respective Country, feel free to reblog this with those added tips.
1. Digital Sites: If you're like me and you don't have a lot of space anymore to grow your physical collection, the next best option for you would be to go digital. Now it all depends on which site is your preference but if you wanna buy your manga directly from Japan that is translated in English then I highly recommend you use global.bookwalker.jp . It has a loyalty program that allows you to gain coins for every purchase and you can use those coins to buy more digital manga legally. No scanlations, just official translations by the manga publishers in the USA. I've been using it for a while now and it has worked wonders but since it's still growing it's library, I highly recommend you use their request form for new series where you can tell them which series they need to add to their store. Since chances are that they're already partnered with those publishers in question. But here are some other alternatives to bookwalker you can use if you aren't comfortable using a brand new site:
Kobo
Nook
ComiXology
VIZ
2. Public Library: If you can't afford to buy manga, then the next best thing you can possibly do is request the manga from your local library. Library cards are absolutely free and you can check out as many books as you'd like. Also if a library doesn't have a title, by requesting a certain series, you're also helping another fan who can't spend money get access to that series as well. Making it easier for all.
3. Physical Copies: Of course you knew we were gonna talk about our physical manga collections. While digital might be more convenient for fans who're constantly on the go, holding the physical volume just feels so good. There are plenty of ways you can personally support the manga and light novel industry when it comes to physical copies. But if you wanna kill two birds with one stone then you should always try to order your series from your local bookseller over sites like amazon or B&N first. If not then you can use your preferred bookseller option. But here's a link to Kinokuniya if you'd like a physical alternative to bookwalker like I mentioned above.
4. Conventions: Anime conventions normally have really big vendor halls filled to the brim with booksellers and merchants of every genre within manga and anime. From hentai to fluff to angst to slice of life, there's something for everyone at anime cons. But unfortunately until COVID has become more containable and less of a threat, you'll have to wait on that unless your local anime con decides it's OK to proceed. Normally you can get pretty good deals on manga as well at vendor halls.
So once again, I hope you guys find this at least a little helpful. While not the most in depth guide, I do try my best to give legit tips on how to grow your collection. From a nerdy manga reader such as myself lol. Thanks for reading and continue to support creators!

Hey, love the blog, keep up the good work!! I was also wondering, do you own any physical detective conan copies? I've thought about getting some myself but there's just /so many/ of them that it's kind of daunting lol
Thank you for all the support! ( I was so surprised people started following this blog!!! It’s been really nice to find so many DCMK fans!)
For your question: Collecting the Detective Conan books
YES, it can be super intimidating! But don’t worry! It’s theoretically possible!
I have all of the Detective Conan books up through Volume 96 (currently) in Japanese (and one volume each in English, Chinese, and Finnish). Additionally, I have most of the Super Digest Books, Magic Kaito V. 1-5, Hannin no Hanazawa-san V. 1 (SO FUNNY), a Kaitou KID vs. Conan Special Addition, and a few of the movie adaptations. I also had V. 1-20 of the Detective Conan Special Manga (my aunt bought it for me), but I think I got rid of them? Upon checking, I (in fact) do still have them all.
For me, I’m very lucky in that I bought most of my books in Japan from BOOK-OFF (used bookstore chain - highly recommend), so they were about $1 each. New books in Japan cost around $4. Most of the Case Closed books I’ve found in the US cost about $12. If you live in a big city, like NYC or Seattle, you can find Japanese versions of the books for about $6 ( Don’t quote me on the prices). Kinokuniya is a wonderful store that has international branches.
When I was younger I had more of the Case Closed books, (which have a very decent translation!) that I bought from bookstores and Cons, but I just found myself not reading those copies, so I donated them / gave them to friends.
I’ve had a long time to collect them, so it hasn’t been prohibitively expensive for me (and I was able to buy them cheaply and locally). But, if you really like the series, I can’t stress enough how nice it is to have the actual books. I haven’t taken them with me when I’ve been away from home, so it’s always so nice to come back to. (That’s how I started binge-reading Conan this year - I couldn’t wait to come back home from Mongolia to read my copies, so I ended up reading Conan online).
In terms of space, the books aren’t very big, so since I double shelf them they take up like 1.5 shelves. My grandparents make fun of me for still reading the series, my parents think it’s cute, and my little cousins will try and point out all the Conan stuff for me ( like drinks in vending machines, or buying tiny little candies with Conan logos on them for me, or reading the books I buy with me).
I’m really happy with it, and even though I hadn’t been reading the series online regularly for the past couple years, buying the physical copies of the books kept me up to date on cases.
(This is really long, but I hope this answers your question? PM me for more info if you need it)
P.S. How do you add a read more?

random list of things I got to do in 2019 that were fun
might as well make this a recurring thing, although I can’t recall if there’ll be more or less stuff than last year. either way:
learn to speedrun DK King of Swing, and claim the 3rd place record for one of the categories by the end of the year
submit DK King of Swing to GDQ twice. despite being rejected both times, it was still a fun challenge to set for myself
bought a new copy of Fire Emblem Sacred Stones
successfully beat a Nuzlocke run for the first time in my life, on Pokemon X, which led me to the next item on this list...
take on the Ribbon Quest challenge in Pokemon and complete Jin the Farfetch’d Ribbon Master in about 6 months
meet some of my wonderful online friends in person, and do a couple things like play an escape room, visit an arcade, and go to Anime Boston for a day (where I bought some hentai thin books because of course)
buy the seventh and final volume of Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro, a manga series I’d been reading for over a decade
this next one is literally so monumental it deserves its own throne upon which to sit separated from the rest:
play Fire Emblem Three Houses, unequivocally my game of the year and probably my favorite experience playing video games of the past several years. this game absorbed me in a way video games rarely do anymore and had me hooked for days on end. this game was so good, I didn’t even wanna sleep because I had to know what happened next. it was really refreshing to know games can still have that effect on me
okay back to the normal list
visit my friend Spencer at the lake house again this summer, which I didn’t do in 2018 for some reason
play in the second season of the ongoing D&D campaign from last year, which was even better than season one imo
take a trip to New York City with my family, which was a great weekend. and yeah, I bought more Japanese manga at Kinokuniya, although I never ended up making a post about it
commit to finishing the Bulbot challenge in Robopon 2, something I started over 5 years ago and am glad to not have to think about anymore lol
play Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee in Japanese, something I never thought I’d be doing when I first started google translating Kemono Friends comics back in 2017 but here we are
enjoy a fun New Year’s Even drinking online with my friends
I guess there was a lot more to add this year than I thought. or maybe I was just less strict about what made the list lol, who knows. fun year though

I’m back from fanime 2018. o_o fanime is all the way in California so .. I consider I’m extremely lucky to go to fanime every time I go, and every time I go I think “this might be the last fanime I go to”. This was my third year being part of fanime.
This fanime I feel like I did a lot of the stuff that I’ve always wanted to do but could never find the guts to do? Namely, organizing a meet up (comics breakfast at Peggy Sue; it was really nice and it was fun to chat with other people who were at that animecon who had books or wanted to make books) and reaching out to three different people to invite them out to eat (I was turned down by all three of them LOL but at least I tried)
This is also the first time I’ve been LOUDLY PRESENT with my romantic drama on webtoons at an anime convention and the reactions were so good.
(the banner on the left, and advertising cards on the right that were free to take for whoever wanted)
From what I’ve felt from going to anime conventions all over the US, there’s a way higher percentage of people who read comics on webtoons in California in particular compared to other states. Like on the east coast maybe 1 out of 5 attendees use webtoons – in California it’s like 3 out 5 people use webtoons and the other 2 out of 5 know one or more friends who use webtoons & often tell them about some comic they’re reading on webtoons they’re excited about.
So I was kinda hoping that I could get a good reaction for the comic at fanime of all places o.o I’m also looking forward to the reactions at anime expo since Webtoons has a headquarters in Los Angeles. Btw I’ll be at table i08 there at AX2018. Anyway.
All weekend long I heard lots of young sounding girls reading the banner out loud to their friend(s).
And a lot of them were subscribing the comic right then and there on their phones and really that was such a highlight of the entire weekend, every hour a few people would do this, so I’m really glad I had this giant queer girl banner printed and on display like that for young girl readers to see and to follow the comic.
At TCAF where I first had this banner on display, the reactions were a lot more more muted because there just wasn’t a ton of people who used webtoons who were also attending TCAF (TCAF is a book convention focused on western indie comics, and not an anime convention). That and I think the percentage of attendees that identify as queer is way higher at animecons than at TCAF………….. or something.
Anyway thanks to the banner, all weekend I was hearing excited young women remarking about “romantic queer drama” and “OMG IS THIS YURI” so it just felt.. very.. satisfying? I guess. It was cool to be able to provide that experience of encountering a comic that people were excited to read. So exciting that people would show me how they subscribed on their phone.
I gave out all 500 business cards I brought to promote the comic, and sold 10 copies of the printed book (I thought I might sell 3 or 4 copies to existing readers, but 9 out of 10 sold to new readers who never heard of the comic but really liked the inside pages & that it was a story about a girl falling in love with another girl)
My one regret about this weekend is not bringing more pottery, but also.. between preparing for TCAF and drawing the comic, there hasn’t been a lot of time to go into the studio before fanime, so it was simple math that I’d only have time to produce half the number of cups I could have produced if I wasn’t working on the comic. I do like making pottery but it was critical before TCAF to put all of my energy into making and marketing books so that it had a fair chance of succeeding.
At zenkaikon I had a lot of fun talking about Miss Kobayashi Dragon Maid but at fanime I ended up talking more about Noragami and Steven Universe… I was looking forward to meeting more Kobayashi fans but fanime has so many good artists that I was one of many who had a print about Kobayashi. It was both a surprise but a relief because I think Kobayashi Dragon Maid s a cute show that should have lots of fans.
Not a lot of people had seen Land of the Lustrous which was a surprise o_O I thought everyone was watching this show but I guess nobody likes 3D cartoons??? not sure. I only had a couple interesting discussions about that show and I expected to be talking about that show all weekend…
(I splurged and bought all six volumes of Land of the Lustrous at kinokuniya San Jose on Tuesday before flying back to check them out.. and a few other books I had been putting off buying. I finished volume 1 while waiting at the airport.)
I’m also going to remember fanime for being fevercon,,,,,,,,,,, because I had a fever the entire time I was there. I was feeling myself getting sick Thursday morning (itchy throat) and then by Friday afternoon I had a full on fever and runny nose. I also booked a weird flight home and ended up sleeping at San Diego airport to catch a connecting flight at 7am after arriving there from San Jose at 10pm LOL sigh I thought if I ever go to San Diego it would be to attend San Diego Comic Con for the first time. ..and not to camp out on the floor at San Diego airport to catch a 7am commutor flight lol. I may never go to SDCC, who knows.
I don’t think I’ve ever been this sick at an anime convention. Fatigued sure, but never full on having a fever and feeling very woozy. It was doable (I was ready to close the table and go nap somewhere if it got bad) and it added to that surreal feeling I usually have about being in California all the way from New York.
I didn’t get any street passes at San Jose airport nor at San Diego airport.. I got a couple when I landed in NYC though. Note to self, yes it was totally doable to spend the night at an airport with a sleeping bag but don’t do that again.
Overall it was a really nice weekend, and a good one for You Were Always By Me, and it was surreal and awesome to be part of fanime again. I don’t know if I will be able to go back next year because I might forget to apply or may be unable to afford it… but I’ll try. Online shop here. Patreon here.
fanime 2018 will also be remembered for: wow I got to meet so many people from twitter! That was neat & I sold out of the diary comics. Most conventions I only sell a couple copies of the diary comic so that was a nice surprise! I want to make the next book planned and nice.
Also fanime 2018: lol the “How To Wear A Hanbok” comic did not want to sell. It was my best seller at TCAF………… A lot of people at fanime mentioned they seen it on tumblr though which is cool because I put links to all my comics on the bottom of that post so I have tried my best to get my time’s worth. lol so thank you for reblogging everyone so that I can reach a few more readers.

(same anon again!) Tysm for all the info! And holy shit all the work u've put into translating it is insane.
Could u pls tell me what dictionary u r using?
Oh and also, i actually bought the first volume in english last month and been waiting for the second one to come out, but at this point might as well buy the japanese copies lol
I also have the first volume in English and am waiting for my preorder of volume two for next month, lol. Good Lord, Viz, you’re taking your sweet time, huh? But I prefer having hard copies anyway, and I’m not in the mood to pay for or wait for DHL shipping from Japan right now and the Kinokuniya near me is kind of not a safe place to run off to due to PLAGUE to see if they even have it.
ETA: lol, Bookshop just shipped volume two today. Neat.
So my Japanese copies are all digital. That’s fine; it’s easier to read with a dictionary that way.
The dictionary I’m using is called Midori. It’s only available for iOS, but it’s like 10 bucks and I have an iPhone, so.
RE: amount of work:
I’m kind of, uhhhh, stubborn. Determined? Stupid? I’m very good at repeatedly throwing myself into a wood chipper until it jams up, and hey, you know, reading stuff in English is how I learned how to read English.
I’m also chronicling “Japanese is weird” on my twitter alongside my livetweets for the entire series.
But I’m not, exactly, translating it. Translation is hard, and when reading a foreign language, a lot of it is “I understand what this sentence means, but putting it back together in English/native language is tricky” because words don’t line up properly, but the concept makes sense, or the grammar is odd, or w/e.
Translating some of the panels like I’ve done on Tumblr is fun, though, it helps me think about Japanese grammar more so I can replicate at least the sense without totally paraphrasing it.

tldr: we visited a bookstore in amsterdam and tried some dutch snacks that our prof recommended
my frens and i decided to cook lunch in the dorms instead of eating out in an attempt to save money since we spent too much yesterday
mmmm white rice with brussel sprouts fried in butter and garlic, vegan fish nuggets (that were slightly burnt i’m sorry lol) aND SOME ALCOHOL
i’d take homecooked meals over the cheaper cafe/restaurant food any day
after lunch we headed back to amsterdam with two ideas in mind: (1) to visit a local bookstore, and (2) to do some (souvenir?) shopping
i was honestly expecting a small antique bookstore but the one we went to was pretty modern and stocked english books
I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU BUT I LOVE THE COVER DESIGNS FOR THE DUTCH VERSION OF HARUKI MURAKAMI’S BOOKS hoLY shIT THEY ARE SO PRETTY??? i was this close 👌 to buying one just for the cover
TT why don’t the english versions have such nice covers...
oh but i did find a book titled ‘convenience store woman’ by sayaka murata and it sounded pretty interesting... (+ nice cover as a bonus for getting a physical copy) maybe kinokuniya might have it??
this was the view from the bookstore!! pretty nice
unfortunately we couldn’t do much souvenir shopping bc we started our journey way too late (we ate lunch at around 1 pm) and weren’t aware that shops close SUPER EARLY here
welp that’s what happens when you aren’t prepared
anyway we decided to just enjoy the scenery and wander around aimlessly until it was dinner time
idk if you can read the words on the blue banner but it says ‘magna plaza’
it’s actually a normal three-storey mall despite looking like a castle (or museum) from outside
during the pizza dinner, dr. julia (who taught us for food chemistry in year 2) suggested some popular dutch foods that we should try while we’re here
ok so i may not have recognised her when she joined us at our table during the pizza dinner bUT she was my fav wageningen prof bc... she brought mini stroopwafels into my life for us when she came to sg to hold the practical (it was the first fst lab we had!!) and they are the ones that i’ve been trying to look for
one of them was poffertjes (or mini dutch pancakes)!! so we stopped by a cafe to try the pankeks~ i ordered stroopwafel ice-cream as well bc i wanted... ice-cream... in a cold land
they were nice!! how can you go wrong with sweets oqo
for dinner we had a falafel wrap thing (i can’t remember its actual name) but falafel is a deep-fried ball made of chickpeas and it’s pretty common in netherlands?? idk we had it as a pizza topping the other day
if i had to describe the taste of falafel balls, it would be... dry... and bean-y
my phone was acting up again so this falafel isn’t mine but my friend’s! the employees would just give you a wrap with the falafel balls in it and afterwards you can put in more ingredients (vegetables, sauces) yourself
there was a snack bar near the place we had dinner at and so we tried kaassoufflé (also a recommendation by dr. julia) which is a deep fried snack containing melted cheese
i wasn’t too fond of the taste... idk what cheese they used but it was particularly stinky (maybe goat cheese? not really a fan of that)
the snack bar also had bitterballen (basically deep fried beef ball) but i didn’t really want to try it for obvious reasons ://
post-trip comment: although i didn’t try bitterballen at the snack bar, we were served some at the beer company that we visited in the second week and i was hungry so i ate two... i mean... they’re alright i guess?? there’s like some mushy thing inside which i’m hoping is gravy and not the meat
oH i almost forgot but we also tried fries with mayonnaise (once again, as recommended)!! they were fresh, piping hot, and delicious
i was expecting us to return to campus earlier today bc we chose a dinner location that was MUCH closer to the station (unlike the ulu seafood place) bUT NOPE
well the night scenery is quite nice but tbh moving around in the dark was a rather scary experience especially when we were out of amsterdam bc there were almost no streetlights to illuminate our surroundings
took the last bus to the campus but this time the seniors weren’t there to help us
we ended up getting off at the wrong stop (one stop after the one we were supposed to stop at) and we had to walk back in the darkness ;; it was midnight already so there weren’t a lot of ppl out weh
