When it comes to buying a car in Qatar, the option of purchasing a second-hand vehicle is becoming increasingly popular. With a growing number of dealerships and online platforms offering a wide variety of used cars, buyers have more choices than ever before. Whether you're looking for a luxury sedan or a reliable family car, second-hand cars for sale in Qatar offer an affordable and practical solution.

Why Choose Second Hand Cars?
Buying a second-hand car in Qatar comes with several benefits. The most obvious advantage is the cost savings. New cars depreciate quickly, losing a significant portion of their value within the first few years. By opting for a second-hand car, you can avoid this initial depreciation and get more value for your money. Additionally, second-hand cars often come with lower insurance premiums, making them even more cost-effective in the long run.
Another reason to consider second-hand cars is the wide selection available in the market. From compact cars to SUVs, you can find a vehicle that suits your needs and budget. Many second-hand cars in Qatar are well-maintained and come with service histories, giving you peace of mind about the car's condition. Moreover, with the availability of certified pre-owned programs, you can purchase a used car that has undergone rigorous inspections and meets high-quality standards.

Tips for Buying a Second Hand Car in Qatar
While buying a second-hand car can be a smart financial decision, it's essential to do your due diligence. Here are a few tips to help you make a wise purchase:
Set a Budget: Determine how much you're willing to spend on a car, including any additional costs such as insurance, registration, and maintenance.
Research the Market: Take the time to compare prices and models to ensure you're getting a fair deal. Websites like Qarsspin make this process easy by allowing you to compare multiple listings.
Inspect the Car: Before finalizing the purchase, inspect the car thoroughly or have it checked by a professional mechanic. Look for any signs of wear and tear, and make sure the car's paperwork is in order.
Test Drive: Always take the car for a test drive to assess its performance. Pay attention to how it handles, brakes, and accelerates.
Negotiate the Price: Don't be afraid to negotiate the price with the seller. Use your research on similar models as leverage to get the best deal possible.
Conclusion
In conclusion, second-hand cars for sale in Qatar present an excellent opportunity for buyers to own a reliable vehicle without breaking the bank. With the right approach and resources like Qarsspin, finding the perfect used car can be a straightforward and rewarding experience. Wontorra: „And really, with that we’re back on the subject of football players’ public image. Right, we’ve read all about that, they drive luxurious Lamborghinis, they eat golden steaks, they have their hairdressers flown in - I’m just saying „they“, even if it’s in all likelihood not [the entirety of all footballers], but just a few select players. But to what degree can that be a problem that your (plural) image makes people regard you professional footballers more and more critically? Kramer: „Yes, that just happens to be my favourite topic. I think a big problem is social media. You post things quickly, and then quickly you get reactions to it and everybody knows about it and then things like that just happen that are not… cool. Although I think you really have to consider the bigger picture. When somebody gives Ribéry a golden steak to eat, he’s earned it, for all I care he can eat a golden steak I don’t have a problem with that. Because he’s just always („Gas geben“, don’t know how to translate that here. Likes he’s saying RF works hard, he can play hard, something like that?), for 15 years he’s been among the best Bundesliga players playing for Bayern Munich, he’s made shitloads of money, so when he says ‘whoa I’d like to eat that golden steak’ that’s just completely alright, and if he wants a big car - I drive a nice car as well, or living in a nice apartment or a nice house, those are all things he’s earned and he can do, all not a problem as such. I just think, once again, it’s how you go about it (presenting it), that’s just a fine line, isn’t it? Though I guess some [people/players] actively go for the confrontation, 'I live my life the way I want and nobody can tell me anything!’, and that’s fine as well. Generally on that subject I think we are often quick to say 'he’s lost it completely, he should focus more on playing football!‘ and stuff like that, but if we’re completely honest, a fast car and a golden steak don’t have anything to do with focus/concentration, and neither does instagram. Especially as if I went and did that history degree (he’s talked before about how he’d like to go and study history, but being „too far“ from it now) people would say ‚great you’re doing something besides [football]!‘ when that would take up much more focus/concentration than eating a steak or driving a fast car. Wontorra: „Well it just creates this impression of the football player having lost touch with reality. (Again that’s not a good translation, he says „abgehobener Fußballer“, like literally the opposite of „down to earth“, „abgehoben" means having lost touch with the ground and floating somewhere in the air). But how much of that can also be attributed to footballers getting pampered/spoilt far too much by the clubs and having everything taken off them (as in they don’t have to do anything, the clubs see to it being done for them)?“ Kramer: „Whoa, yeah, that’s quite a… these really aren’t your common-or-garden questions of ‚How are you?‘ and ‚What will next week’s line-up look like?‘!“ Wontorra: „(Laughs) That’s why you enjoy it!“ Kramer: „Tough talk!“ (in German he says „Harter Tobak!“ which I just love cause it’s such an old-fashioned expression, it literally means ‚rough/strong tobacco!“ and conjures the image of someone stuffing their pipe, at least to me) Wontorra: „But you are a thoughtful person, that’s what’s so great about it, you actually reflect on the issues and Kramer: „(Looking down bashfully) I’m happy [to hear that].“ Wontorra: „…and you said that footballers *have* to reflect on these things in order to put it all in a realistic context.“ Kramer: „Yes, and there *is* a certain danger there, of course. I for one am just glad that when I was young, I had my parents that admonished me quite harshly at times and said things like ‚No, you definitely won’t buy that car now, you’ll get this used Toyota Corolla instead!“, and things like that, because it really is like that, you can’t properly grasp things as they’re happening. And it was even quite tolerable in my case, I don’t know what I earned from my first contract but it was just a fraction of what today’s 18 or 19 year-olds earn with *their* first contracts.“ Wontorra: „Your father would probably know.“ Kramer: „Yes, actually I know, too, I just don’t want to say it. (Wontorra laughs.) But that [making so much money so young] makes you lose touch and leads you to do stuff that’s not… appropriate, that’s… actually normal, isn’t it? You mustn’t forget many of the players are really, really young, but they’re not perceived to be so young. When you see them on the pitch you don’t think, 'they’re really quite young!‘ Alright, if a player makes a mistake that leads to a goal you might say „oh well he’s just 19, he lacks experience.“ but you don’t see him as a typical 19 year-old. But he is, he’s actually got the behavioural patterns of a child. He’s sacrificed a lot, socially, because he missed out on a ‚proper‘ adolescence. Back in school, I kind of missed the train socially, because when it all started, around 15/16 and everybody was like, 'she’s gotten off with him’ and ‚he’s with her now‘, I never had any part in that because I always had a game or I had training - and I’m not trying to say that that was bad or asking for sympathy or anything, but still I didn’t have a ‚classic‘ adolescence in that sense and then, when at 18 or 19 you sign your first fat contract and suddenly you earn money, maybe to a certain degree you want to compensate for that and live out your adolescence/missed-out puberty, maybe. It’s just, in my opinion, as ever a matter of how you put it across/present yourself. It’s a process of maturity in a way and not everybody gets that right in the beginning. I said some things early in where today I think „Oh dear! - Wontorra: „‚If only you hadn’t!‘“ Kramer: „Exactly‚ ‚If only you hadn’t!‘ but that’s just part of it all, isn’t it?“ Wontorra: „But shouldn’t you, especially as a professional footballer, at least somewhere at the back of your head, also be aware of how damn lucky/fotunate you’ve been? And how if it hadn’t worked out, maybe if there’d been just one different coach somewhere along the way, you wouldn’t have ended up a professional player?“ Kramer: „Yes, that’s it, that really is the most important thing of all, and seriously I say that all the time, to my friends and my parents and so on, that’s what keeps you grounded a bit. I could list you at least 10 or 15 instances where I was just in the right place at the right time and if I’d missed one of those 10 to 15 situations today I’d be… no idea, maybe play in Regional Liga? The density of good players is really high („Leistungsdichte“? „Density of performance“? No idea.) You *have* to be grateful for what you’ve got and for what you’ve achieved, though you also mustn’t forget, I mean, I’m not *just* a résumé of good luck, I also have a lot of ambition and a little bit of talent, but I also really had a lot of good luck, just like many others. I mean, of course there is the one in a million player, like, Mario Götze, when I met him in the U14 I knew he’d definitely become a great one, but take him out of the equation and just look at the *normal* footballer blessed with the usual amount of talent, everyone of us every day has to say many times ‚thank you!‘ and ‚I’ve been so lucky!‘ and then everything’s alright.“ Wontorra: „How many of your former teammates from your old ‚A-Jugend‘ team (that’s the oldest youth team, the 17 to 19 year-olds) have actually made it and become professional footballers?“ Kramer: „Hmmm, my old A-Jugend… well, we had a very strong A-Jugend team, we were West-German champions even and reached the final of the German championship… there’s Thanos Petsos, who’s in Vienna now, and Pierre Lasogga, Qatar, Julian Riedel at Hansa Rostock…“ Wontorra: „Alright, but it ends there, doesn’t it?“ Kramer: „And this was a really good year - Kevin Kampl! Really a good year.“ Wontorra: „Are you still in contact with those who didn’t make it?“ Kramer: „Yes and that’s another thing, and that’s my plea - this would be a good note to finish on, actually (Wontorra laughs), talking about that stuff before, the hype surrounding footballers and their golden steaks, the Ferraris and the Million$, we mustn’t forget that there are many, many more who also gave up their youth and invested a lot into football and, because school suffered from that, as it did with me, today they work at Starbucks at the airport. Not to devalue that job at Starbucks at the airport, of course. But… they just sacrificed a lot. And they are [gestures with his hands far apart] and the pyramid goes like this [gestures a pyramid with a narrow top], and those who made it can afford their gold steak today and people can get annoyed with them, but you must also see those who didn’t make it, because there are very, very, very many, so… be grateful and be aware of how lucky you’ve been.“ Wontorra: „That Starbucks example, by the way, you were talking about a real-life person there. But you also have friendships that originated in football, with other professionals who did make it. One of them we asked to send you their love (again. Idiom. „Gruß ausrichten lassen“): Max Kruse: „Hallo Chris! Wunderschöne Grüße from the Bosphorus! I was asked about anecdotes about you and me, but to be honest I don’t think people should hear about most of those anecdotes! But I’ve got one, I’ve got a question for you: have you finally overcome your phobia of snakes? So, lots of love, see you soon, ciao ciao!“ Wontorra: „So this was Max Kruse, one of you close friends, but what’s he talking about with the snakes?“ Kramer: „Yes, well. We were, now when was this, I think in the winter of 2013 we were in Australia together and we googled venomous snakes, and there was one, the [Rotbauchotter]? Anyway, the second most venomous snake in the world and if it bites you you’re dead within seconds or something. And one day, though hiking’s really not for Max Kruse but I forced him to that time, we drove into the outback, into the Blue Mountains near Sydney and walking up some sandy path suddenly this snake came towards us. And we’d read just before that it was quite aggressive as well, attacking humans and so on, the kind of stuff you find on google, and so we ran what felt like 20 kilometres in full sprint back out of this forest and were panicking really, really badly though I would say that he felt just the same panic as I did. I’m really very much afraid of snakes, I just can’t with them, they’re… just like wasps they just… [does a wiggling/swaying movement] they don’t move smoothly, you know? You can’t really read them [/their movements], I don’t like that. And so… that will probably stay like that forever, that I’m really afraid of snakes, and was really afraid in that moment there with him, but we both were.“ Wontorra: „There was an incident in Duisburg only the other day (Kramer: „Yeeees“) but that had a happy end, and so did yours, so all’s well that ends well. And so at least, in the middle of your winter holidays you had a special training unit.“ (…)

Bearing Witness
D. Parvaz
In the summer of 2013 I was in Cairo, Egypt. I was on assignment for Al-Jazeera and I was covering a major political upheaval. The president at the time, a guy named Mohammad Morsi who was affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood party, had been deposed and jailed in what his supporters said was an illeigmiate military coup. So in protest they set up these sit-ins, two of them in the city. And it was this hot, crazy summer, really tense, and by the middle of August the government finally did what it had threatened to do, which was clear the sit-ins. But they did so with unabated violence. They started shooting at people in the sit-ins and in the surrounding neighborhoods around 7 in the morning and didn’t stop until well into the night, until pretty much everybody was either dead or arrested. I’ve never seen anything like it. It was a massacre in broad daylight in a capital city of roughly 20 million.
So the next day, along with a producer who worked in the local bureau and could translate Arabic for me, I went to a mosque where maybe 200 of these bodies were kept. A lot of them were also burned really badly and there were blocks of ice on top of them. And there were these family members going in and out of this mosque to identify their loved ones. It was intensely chaotic and emotional. So my colleague and I walk outside and we start talking to this woman. And she says her husband is among the dead and she’s shaking and in shock. She’s describing her last phone conversation with her husband when the shooting started. And she describes him as an engineer who was unarmed, and he was the father of her 4 children. And my colleague is translating and I’m not even looking, I’m in my notebook, furiously not wanting to miss a detail. And then he stops translating while she’s still talking and I look up at him finally, which is what he was waiting for, and the look on my face is like “Dude, what?” And he leans in and whispers, “Now would be a good time for you to put an arm around her. And this makes my little reporters brain totally short circuit. I am not a touchy-feely person. I don’t hug you for you to tell me your story. But the look on his face was just clear: get over yourself, be human now, and put your arm around her.
So I really robotically lift my arm to put around her shoulder, and the second my hand touches her she collapses into my chest. And she’s a very very tiny woman, very petite. But she just sinks into me and starts sobbing as she’s holding onto me, and I’ve got my pen and paper and it  hits me really hard that this woman doesnt care what kind of reporter I am, or what my stupid little rules are. She wants me to register what is happening to her on the worst day of her life. She wants me to bear witness to what’s happening to her. And I should have known better, and in fact I did know better.
A few years prior to that in the spring of 2011 was the start of the uprising in Syria, what is now the civil war. And I was sitting in the newsroom, in Al-Jazeera’s headquarters in Qatar, watching this grainy YouTube footage of civilians being mowed down by the Syrian military. And at the same time we had a government spokesperson on our airwaves claiming that this wasn’t really happening, that it was a distortion of the truth, there was a conspiracy. And we couldn’t confirm any of this because they’d already closed down our bureau in Damascus and they weren’t issuing journalists visas, so what to do? Well. I’m a multinational, I have an Iranian passport. So my boss agreed to deploy me to Syria, where I wouldn’t need a visa to enter, just to see what’s going on.
So I fly into Damascus and unfortunately for me at this point the Syrian authorities have already become super paranoid. So they go through my luggage and they find a satellite phone, which is not a big deal. If you travel in that part of the world you know that outside of major cities you don’t have cell phone coverage. You can buy a satellite phone at any shopping mall, it’s not spy gear. But this was enough for them to get really suspicious, so they strip searched me and found my American passport in the pocket of my jeans. And in this passport was a stamp from Al-Jazeera, my sponsored visa, for Qatar, it’s what I needed to reenter the country. And this escalated things. So they took me into an office. They sat me between these two guys on this couch. There’s all these other guys in the office chain smoking, banging out some kind of report on their computer about me. And when that report was done the two guys sitting on either side of me got up, and they strapped on a bunch of guns, and they peeled me from the couch, and they led me to the parking garage under the airport. And they sat me between them in the back seat, with another armed man in the front seat, and drove off into the night.
We pulled into a compound, there were 3-4 checkpoints to get into this compound, so I assumed it was some sort of government building, where they pulled me out of the car by my hair and threw me in front of a desk in this dimly lit office. And there were all these men yelling at me and I looked down and saw that I was standing in a considerable amount of somebody else's blood. So they processed me for some kind of arrest, blind folded me, handcuffed me, and ended up taking me to an interrogation with a man who told me to call him Ferras. And nothing I said was accepted by Ferras. That I was a reporter, that I wasn’t part of some kind of conspiracy… he didn’t even believe that I didn’t speak Arabic. So I realized very quickly that truth had no currency there. They threw me into a cell that was absolutely covered in blood. Like, so much that I didn’t know where to stand or lean. So I squatted in this corner and tried to sort of wrap my head around the hell that I was in.
Maybe an hour or two later a guy comes to the door. He blindfolds me and handcuffs me and I thought I was being taken to another interrogation, but he took me outside into a courtyard and slammed me up against the wall. And I could hear people being tortured a few feet away from me. And I could hear the guards joking, and laughing, and I could smell their cigarettes, they were just acting like regular employees on a coffee break. And I sat against that wall and I thought to myself, they’re going to kill me. And worse than that though, believe it or not, worse than dying, was the thought of dying like that. Which is to say, alone. Because I was alone. I couldn’t locate the humanity in the people around me. And I knew that I was going to be an anonymous body. If I was lucky they would throw me in a ditch, maybe. And my father would never have any peace, he’d never know what happened to me. And I’ve never been so alone in my life.
After about 20 minutes shivering against this wall, and waiting to be shot in the head, I get pulled off and taken back inside. And I keep thinking, well they didn’t kill me, they didn’t kill me now, but they’re going to kill me, because why, why, why would they not allow a reporter to cover a street protest but see in here all of this, and live? Of course I’m going to write about it, why would they do this? I’m gonna die. They’re going to kill me. I’m gonna die. And this was on a pretty tight loop in my head as they threw me back in a cell. And I can hear people being tortured inside this compound, outside this compound, the voices kind of echo and come and go and blend in and then there’s this one voice that stands out. And I can’t exactly figure out why except that he sounded extremely young, he sounded like a teenager, a boy. And I could tell that there was more than one person hurting him, and he was just howling. He was swearing he didn’t know things, swearing to God he hadn’t done anything wrong. He was calling out to God, calling out to his mother, and I couldn’t take it anymore. It was brutal. And so I put my hands up to my ears to just try to block it out. And the second I did that I felt such shame. Because I realized that this kid was in his own, far worse version of the wall -- that's where he was. He was alone. He was dying alone. That’s what was happening. And so I pulled my hands down, just to do what I could, which was to hear him. I couldn’t call out to him to say, “I hear you're not alone,” couldn't identify him, I didn’t know his name, couldn’t contact his family, couldn’t do anything. All I had was the ability to bear witness in that fashion. The kid was choking on his own blood, in his own country, and nobody was going to know. I felt that it was the least I could do. So I listened to him for a while, and every scream was excruciating. It was like a hole being cut inside me with every one of them. And then rather abruptly, his voice just stopped.
So a couple of days later the Syrians decided that maybe it wasn’t a good idea for them to permanently disappear an Iranian citizen because they have a good relationship with the Iranian government. So they sent me to Iran via extraordinary rendition for additional questioning for another couple of weeks at another prison there. And much to my surprise the Iranain authorities freed me and sent me back to my family. Which was great, I needed the time off for a little bit, but I didn’t want to not be working. I didn’t need to go to a spa and to breathe alpine air. What I needed was to get back to work. Because not being busy and not working meant the wall was always there. I could feel it. And I wanted to push back against that feeling. I couldn’t wait to get back to work, so I did. The second I could I flung myself back into my job. Every assignment if they didn't give me the assignment I would fight for it. Egypt, Libya, nuclear meltdown in Japan, didn’t matter, I was doing it. And I succeeded. A little too well, in pushing back against that wall and that feeling. And what I did in doing so was I also built a distance between myself and the things that I was reporting on, the people I was reporting on.
But when that woman in Egypt fell into my chest and started crying in the second that it took her to fall into me and cry she destroyed that distance. Entirely eradicated it. And I was back at the wall, and the boy’s voices in my head. And as painful as it is, I realized that it was necessary to bear witness, fully, to what’s happening to someone beyond the couple of paragraphs they might actually get in the story. And as much as some stories will leave a mark, sometimes that’s just what it takes.

Rent and debt problems (WSJ) A new study from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia found that outstanding rent debt in the United States will hit $7.2 billion by the end of 2020, and without additional stimulus spending Moody’s estimates that it could hit $70 billion. They estimate that 12.8 million people will owe an average $5,400 from missed payments, which is significantly higher than the 3.8 million homeowners foreclosed on from 2007 to 2010. Across the U.S., 30 million to 40 million people face possible eviction once moratoriums expire.
A Divided Nation Agrees on One Thing: Many People Want a Gun (NYT) In America, spikes in gun purchases are often driven by fear. But in past years that anxiety has centered on concerns that politicians will pass stricter gun controls. Mass shootings often prompt more gun sales for that reason, as do elections of liberal Democrats. Many gun buyers now are saying they are motivated by a new destabilizing sense that is pushing even people who had considered themselves anti-gun to buy weapons for the first time—and people who already have them to buy more. The nation is on track in 2020 to stockpile at record rates, according to groups that track background checks from FBI data. Across the country, Americans bought 15.1 million guns in the seven months this year from March through September, a 91 percent leap from the same period in 2019, according to seasonally adjusted firearms sales estimates from The Trace, a nonprofit news organization that focuses on gun issues. The FBI has also processed more background checks for gun purchases in just the first nine months of 2020 than it has for any previous full year, FBI data show. “The year 2020 has been just one long advertisement for why someone may want to have a firearm to defend themselves,” said Douglas Jefferson, the vice president for the National African American Gun Association, which has seen the biggest increase in membership this year since the group was formed in 2015.
The ‘Right to Repair’ Movement Gains Ground (NYT) If you buy a product—a car, a smartphone, or even a tractor—and it breaks, should it be easier for you to fix it yourself? Manufacturers of a wide range of products have made it increasingly difficult over the years to repair things, for instance by limiting availability of parts or by putting prohibitions on who gets to tinker with them. It affects not only game consoles or farm equipment, but cellphones, military gear, refrigerators, automobiles and even hospital ventilators, the lifesaving devices that have proven crucial this year in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, a movement known as “right to repair” is starting to make progress in pushing for laws that prohibit restrictions like these. The goal of right-to-repair rules, advocates say, is to require companies to make their parts, tools and information available to consumers and repair shops in order to keep devices from ending up in the scrap heap. They argue that the rules restrict people’s use of devices that they own and encourage a throwaway culture by making repairs too difficult. They also argue that it’s part of a culture of planned obsolescence—the idea that products are designed to be short-lived in order to encourage people to buy more stuff. That contributes to wasted natural resources and energy use at a time when climate change requires movement in the opposite direction.
Peru’s Machu Picchu reopening Sunday after pandemic closure (AP) Except workers repairing roads and signs, Peru’s majestic Incan citadel of Machu Picchu is eerily empty ahead of its reopening Sunday after seven months of closure due to the coronavirus pandemic. The long closure of Peru’s No. 1 tourist draw, which has hammered the local economy, marks the second time it has been shut down since it opened its doors to tourism in 1948. The stone complex built in the 15th century will receive 675 visitors a day starting Sunday, the director of Machu Picchu archaeological park, José Bastante, told The Associated Press. The site is accustomed to receiving 3,000 tourists a day, though it recently passed regulations limiting visitors to 2,244 visitors a day to protect the ruins. Still a large number given experts belief that in the 15th century a maximum of 410 people lived in the citadel on the limits of the Andes mountains and the Amazon.
Evo’s return (Foreign Policy) Evo Morales will return to Bolivia on Nov. 9, the day after President-elect Luis Arce is sworn in. Morales’s return will come just over a year after he was forced out of the country. An outstanding arrest warrant for sedition and terrorism issued for Morales was annulled on Tuesday, paving the way for his return. Meanwhile, hundreds of supporters of the right-wing opposition marched on a military barracks on Tuesday asking for “military help” to stop the Movement for Socialism (MAS) party from regaining power.
New protests loom as Europeans tire of virus restrictions (AP) Protesters set trash bins afire and police responded with hydrant sprays in downtown Rome Tuesday night, part of a day of public outpouring of anger against virus-fighting measures like evening shutdowns for restaurants and bars and the closures of gyms and theaters—a sign of growing discontent across Europe with renewed coronavirus restrictions. It was a fifth straight night of violent protest in Italy, following recent local overnight curfews in metropolises including Naples and Rome. All of Europe is grappling with how to halt a fall resurgence of the virus before its hospitals become overwhelmed again. Nightly curfews have been implemented in French cities. Schools must close at 6 p.m. Schools have been closed in Northern Ireland and the Czech Republic. German officials have ordered de-facto lockdowns in some areas near the Austrian border and new mask-wearing requirements are popping up weekly across the continent, including a nationwide requirement in Russia. Yet in this new round of restrictions, governments are finding a less compliant public. Over the weekend, police used pepper spray against protesters angry over new virus restrictions in Poland. Spanish doctors staged their first national walkout in 25 years on Tuesday to protest poor working conditions. In Britain, anger and frustration at the government’s uneven handling of the pandemic has erupted into a political crisis over the issue of hungry children.
Cake Lady helps wounded soldiers heal, one treat at a time LONDON (AP)—David Wiseman heard Kath Ryan before he met her. He was at the far end of Ward S-4 at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham when shouts of “Cake Lady’s here! Cake Lady’s here!” began rolling through the room full of wounded soldiers, bed by bed. Who was this Cake Lady, he wondered, until he saw a middle-aged woman in a “strange dress” pushing a trolley and handing out cake. “When all you’ve seen is doctors and nurses and the odd relative, it was just a bit of an assault on the senses,” Wiseman remembered. “And she was doling out hugs and, you know, cakes. … She just brought joy into that place.” Since 2009, retired nurse Ryan, 59, has made some 1,260 visits to British hospitals, bonding with the patients as she fed them an estimated 1 million slices of cake. But Ryan brought more than treats. She brought herself—bubbly, irreverent, and fearless. As she could see that most of the injured were in a terrible state, she never asked, “How are you?” “I would go in with the trolley and apron and stand at the end of the bed, and say, ‘Can I lead you into temptation this evening?’” Ryan recalled. “Straight away, they would scream laughing.” One soldier got into the spirit and asked, “What’s on offer, love?” “Anything you want,” Ryan replied. “As long as it’s legal, moral, and on the cake trolley.”
With eye on China, India and U.S. sign accord to deepen military ties (NYT) India and the United States signed a pact Tuesday to share geospatial intelligence, paving the way for deeper military cooperation between the two countries as they confront an increasingly assertive China. The agreement will give India’s armed forces access to a wealth of data from U.S. military satellites to aid in targeting and navigation. The two countries signed the accord in New Delhi during a visit by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper a week before the U.S. presidential election. The agreement is the latest example of how India and the United States—the world’s two largest democracies—are drawing closer together to respond to the challenge of China’s rise. For India, that challenge is no longer theoretical. In June, India and China engaged in their deadliest clash in more than 50 years high in the mountains near the unofficial border between the two countries. Twenty Indian soldiers died, while the number of Chinese casualties remains unknown. India and China are still locked in a dangerous standoff, with tens of thousands of troops preparing to wait out the harsh Himalayan winter.
Typhoon, landslides leave 35 dead, 59 missing in Vietnam (AP) Typhoon Molave set off landslides that killed at least 19 people and left 45 missing in central Vietnam, where ferocious wind and rain blew away roofs and knocked out power in a region of 1.7 million residents, state media said Thursday. The casualties from the landslides bring the over-all death toll from the storm to at least 35, including 12 fishermen whose boats sank Wednesday as the typhoon approached with winds of up to 150 kilometers (93 miles) per hour. Vietnamese officials say it’s the worst typhoon to hit the country in 20 years. At least 59 people remain missing in the landslides and at sea. The toll may rise with many regions still unable to report details of the devastation amid the stormy weather.
Scale of Qatar Airways scandal revealed (Foreign Policy) Female passengers on “10 aircraft in total” were forced into invasive physical examinations at Doha airport on Oct. 2, Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne said on Wednesday, as the Qatari government apologized publicly and began an investigation into the incident. The women were removed from flights after a newborn baby was found abandoned in one of the airport bathrooms. The Transport Workers’ Union of New South Wales, whose members service Qatar Airways planes in Sydney, condemned “the brutal attack on the human rights of Australian female airline passengers” and is considering industrial action in response. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison pledged a “further response” after reviewing the results of an investigation. He told reporters, “As a father of daughters, I could only shudder at the thought that any woman, Australian or otherwise, would be subjected to that.”
Australia’s second-largest city ends 111-day virus lockdown MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)—Coffee business owner Darren Silverman pulled his van over and wept when he heard on the radio that Melbourne’s pandemic lockdown would be largely lifted on Wednesday after 111 days. Silverman was making a home delivery Monday when the announcement was made that restrictions in Australia’s second-largest city would be relaxed. He was overwhelmed with emotions and a sense of relief. According to the Victoria state government the lockdown changes will allow 6,200 retail stores, 5,800 cafés and restaurants, 1,000 beauty salons and 800 pubs to reopen, impacting 180,000 jobs.
Nigeria considers social media regulation in wake of deadly shooting (Reuters) Nigeria’s information minister said “some form of regulation” could be imposed on social media just a week after protesters spread images and videos of a deadly shooting using Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Images, video and an Instagram live feed from a popular DJ spread news of shootings in Lagos on Oct. 20, when witnesses and rights groups said the military fired on peaceful protesters. The protesters had been demonstrating for nearly two weeks to demand an end to police brutality. The army denied its soldiers were there. Social media helped spread word of the shootings worldwide, and international celebrities from Beyonce and Lewis Hamilton to Pope Francis since called on the country to resolve the conflict peacefully. Information Minister Lai Mohammed told a panel at the National Assembly on Tuesday that “fake news” is one of the biggest challenges facing Nigeria. A spokesman for the minister confirmed the comments, and said “the use of the social media to spread fake news and disinformation means there is the need to do something about it.”

J
I rarely talk about men, or guys. And the only men whom had won my deepest respect and heart, are my brother and father. Hardly any other man comes close to them.
My dad, illiterate in English, but he talks to me history every now and then.  I always thought I'm similar to my mum, only to realise i was wrong during the Europe trip.
The first day in Berlin, we sat in the Starbucks at Berlin Airport.  I went to get coffee and tea for us, only to see my dad journaling away as he jots down his exhilarating emotions. I look at my dad, and realise, maybe we're really so similar.
Taiwan 2013, it was the first time our family went to a country beyond China and SEA. God knows why, but I insisted on going to museum to see things that I know yet dont know. But my dad clearly knows way more history than me, so he patiently guided me and told me the story of Song Sisters. That explains my love for history.
My brother, persistent and persevering, he deserves all the A+ deans list and prestigous internships.
Then comes you.
May 2017, we met, at AMK Hub, wanting to do competitor analysis for a restaurant that we worked for. You were different from all other guys that I've met. At the top of AMK Hub, you shield me away from the children riding animals cars, for fear of them bumping into me. At the food court, when I'm so used to ordering and buying food all by myself, you insisted that I sat while you make the order. You didnt bother finding out what to eat,but just bought 2 set meal at the chicken rice stall.
"What did you want to drink? "
I said my favourite drink of all time, "Teh o bing"
But auntie somehows made teh bing instead. But i drank it anyways and you told me, that i'm different because i dont make a fuss out of big things, unlike any other girls you've met.
I shook my shoulders because i didnt know what to react, because this is me and i never make a fuss out of small things. But i too, wanted to reply, "you're the most diff guy I've ever met."
We took the covered walkway to Cheng San, with my lap top in my tote bag, sling over my shoulders. You told me, "Dont use this kind of bag, its bad for your shoulders."I smiled and continued walking.
"Eh do you want me to carry it for you? "
I said nope, because i never like people carrying things for me.
I had a feeling that you would wish me luck for my first day of internship which was the very next day. And you actually did. You sent me a clover emoji and I asked you why. You said, "it represents good luck". And from then onwards, 4 leaf clover became my lucky charm.
In that instant, I knew you're different and this friendship is going to be different. Internship and CCC got me so tired, sleeping at 12 am and later almost every day, but I'll always make it a point to text you on the pretext of Bliss. And you'll always rush me to sleep, just like how my mum did.
I harboured hopes, hoping that things would turn out to be something beautiful. I know, i was threading on thin ice, but I continued to harbour hopes. I hate this uncertainty, and I hate having butterflies in my stomach.
Then comes June. I wanted to put all these romance and butterflies away, but one night, I lied down on my bed, and suddenly gazillion thoughts went through my head. About how you felt, how you thought. I really wanted to sleep, because i knew, i cant text you like how a friend do. But when I shut my eyes,  a voice told me to love you, like how i'll love a brother in christ.
So I typed the longest message to you ever. I put away my phone for i fear the reply.
The phone lit up a few seconds after, and you said, "i've never told this to anybody. How did you even know?"
I dont know how to explain the existence of God to somebody whom is a non christian. But i ended off with saying, " I know we share different faith, but just know that, you have a god above, who truly loves you for who you are."
My heart broke when you replied, "No offense. But i believe that christianity is not for everybody."
I try to tell myself that its ok, its truly ok. We can just be friends. But how do you thread the thin line between friends and more than friends. To catch the fish market at Jurong at 12 am was an excuse, I simply wanted to find excuses to go out with you. You didnt know I sacrifice cell for you, but i happily did it, cause you were a gem to me.
God somehow knows the way to my heart. While waiting for the bus at the ulu interchange, you made your way to an eatery, and shove the water bottle down my bag. "See, you dont have water with you again."
That moment, I told God, "what do you want me to do now?"
We were stopped at the fish market, because of cameras, but somehow, you smoked out some reasons and we got in. And you said the manliest things ever, " later if anything, just say I initiated this photoshoot."
I got captivated at the killing and cleaning of fishes, while you waited patiently and paved the way for me, for fear of me slipping and falling. Then I knew, you were the most caring man ever.
I really wanted to clarify our relationship, but I lack the courage to do so. So that night, we went home separately.
God is truly humourous. That August, i won the competition and got offered full time job at a fin tech company and i know it is truly by God's grace and His grace alone. So I knew, that I cannot be tgt with a guy who is non christian. And that time, you told me that you were seeing another girl. So I didnt reply to your text at CCC final when you wish me luck.
But caring and meticulous as you are, you wished me all the best on 21 August, the night I was due for Netherlands.
The butterflies came back again, but soon, our convo died just like how it was always shortlived.
I never initiated any chat, and it's always you, who would asked me who am i doing in netherlands. To the extent that you airflown my favourite cereal to my apt. The postage cost $75, a considerable amount to a guy who is on bursary and part time jobs.
I wanted to return the favour, but you insisted no. So i relented. But we stopped talking, as we always did.
Then came November, you knew of the refugees flooding  into Netherlands due to a hurricane, and checked up on me. I asked God again, "why. Why."But in my heart, I'm secretly happy that you did.
Just when I thought its over, you wished me happy new year, 7 hours before 12 am because I was in France and you were in Singapore.  We revived our chat history.
"So 2 Feb you're coming back?"
I said yes.
"Anybody going to pick you up?"
"i dont know yet. my dad's working, if not i can just cab back home."
"If not i go fetch you. Its a saturday anyways."
"No, dont come."I replied. I never like the idea of you going out of your way for me, because we werent anything.
"But i live near the airport."
No you dont. You live in freaking serangoon and not pasir ris.
But the conclusion was that you didnt have to come because my bro would be coming.
I couldnt understand whatever that was going on, and I felt that you were stepping over the boundaries of a friend. So I asked Vanessa what should I do. After all, shes the only friend that have met you.
She told me to clarify our relationship. So I did it, without any fear because I know, that we can still be friends no matter what.
And true enough, you said, you only treated me as a very close friend because nobody can understand you like i did.  Surprisingly, I didnt seem too sad. And i slept peacefully that night, knowing that i've got a closure in my heart.
But things, continued to be in a grey area.
2 Feb 2018, I came back. And you texted "Are you back in Sg?"
Being the mischievous kid that i always am, i said, "Nope, stuck in Qatar due to weather circumstances."
I sensed in your tone that you're worried sick. So I played along and told you to not worry because Doha Airport provides proper accommodation.
Then I knew the joke was kind of out of hand, so I relented and said I'm happily lying on my bed.
But you seem to have forgotten the dim sum treat that you're supposed to treat me. And I didnt want to cause any unnecessary butterflies and fluttering of heart, so I stopped texting you.
Yet, i dont know what has gotten into me, in May, i told you to meet up. Because I want to meet you as a friend, and I wanted to see if i have truly moved on.
So on hari raya puasa, we met at old airport road. For all the cheap and good local delights. Then you handed me a really bitter herbal drink and you said, "Nah, you forgotten to bring water again right?"
My heart fluttered for you again.
We ate so much, my stomach was bursting and I suggested walking to Stadium to chill.
As dramatic as it was, I played with the shadows and I tried imagining us holding hands. You kept making sure I drank up, so much so that i really wanted to puke.
You already had a girlfriend, but you told me that the conversation you had with me that very night, was more than what you had with your gf for the past 2 weeks. I told you, that you should prolly talk to your gf to clarify things and to improve on your r/s. You somehow werent interested because you seem to be resigned to that fate.
That moment, i really wanted to tell you that you deserve a better girl, but I didnt because I didnt want to be a third party.
That night, we sat over looking kallang river. Hearing the waves that crushes against the man made beach. You told me that you wanted to be a police.
"Wow. To change the nation?"
"Not so noble. I just want to change the things around me."
"And because I am not interested to be in those tall buildings out there. It doesnt seem to have a meaning."
We both looked at the CBD that you're pointing to.
"What a man." I whispered in my heart.
That night, we shared. We shared so much that i know, I'm gonna miss this night.
We bid goodnight, and we never talked again.
I knew, that only on my birthday, would we rekindle our conversation. And true enough, you wished me at 3 am on my birthday, and told me that you wanted to wait till 12, but you gave into the zzz monster.
I took the chance to ask you out, as a friend, to catch up on life.
You said sure. so I was eagerly waiting for the day to arrive.
But the weekend before, I met van, and told her about all these things. And i actually told her that I'm thinking of cutting you off my life,  for I cant handle this weird feelings anymore.
Van said, "Maybe god purposely intertwine both of your lives, not for romantic reason. But to spread your positivity to him.Why cant you talk to him just like how you talk to me and just ask deep questions like how we always do."
Then i realised I cant. You've always treated me as a close friend, but you were never a friend to begin with. I've always treated this r/s gingerly and carefully.
I knew that you only had a few shirts to wear, so I've alr got plans to buy you 2 uniqlo oxford shirts that week to pass to you on wed. But you told me that you had to OT, so we had to cancel our plans.
I heaved a sigh of relief silently, and then I realised, i've viewed this friendship and outing too seriously.
We have yet to decide when is the next outing going to be, but till then, my eyes continue to look at the man's section whenever I see a uniqlo outlet.
People are so curious about my future boyfriend, but how and where do I even begin telling this story.
One night, at a rooftop bar carpark, an intern shared my woes. And he said, "people like us, who rarely gave our hearts away. Once we did, its just too hard to move on."
I've honestly met so many god fearing and eligible men this year, but somehow, I'll always compare them to you. Nobody is as gentlemanly as you.
Writing this, not because i've let you down, but i'm trying to close this chapter. I'm trying to tell myself to move on, to start a new chapter.
And hopefully, the next time we meet, i can really meet you in a capacity of a close friend.
Thank you for the past 1 year 2 months, J.

Thanks to new vehicle renewal service launched by General Directorate of Traffic in Qatar, car owners no longer have troubles with annual inspection. Now, vehicle owners can renew the car license online through Metrash2, without having revert to the General Directorate of Traffic. Plus, the license will be valid for 3 years after completing the insurance fees.
This service comes as part of a program conducted by Qatar focusing on monitoring streets, educating the public on road safety, speed of response and access to the site of the event, development of performance of driving schools and driving standards and improve the quality of traffic services provided to the public at par with global standards.

June.08.2017 Hello, hello-- Today has been a day of great heights and of great lows. When I woke up this morning, I was so confused because my watch said it was 8, but my phone said it was 7. I forgot that I'm an hour behind Athens/Istanbul. As today was going to be my trip to the pyramids, I wanted to get up early and take advantage of the breakfast, but I realized I didn't know when breakfast was served. I laid in my bed for a while on my phone and then got ready. I try to find out where breakfast was but I couldn't find it and eventually I just gave up. I really needed to eat as I hadn't eaten since the plane the day before, so I hit the streets looking for anything that was open. Unfortunately nothing was open as it's Ramadan and it was very early in the day, so I went to the Little kiosk on the corner, grabbed a water and a chocolate, and then headed back to the hostel. I knew I needed some calories and I figured chocolate would do the trick. I also ate a granola bar. There was to be lunch, so didn't need too much food I figured. 10 minutes before 9 I headed to the street. I was very thankful for the street side pick up, and waited eagerly for my tour guide. I didn't know what kind of car they would be in, so I got a little nervous as it grew closer to 10. And then it was 10. I got even more nervous but knew I looked like a tourist, so they would spot me. Sure enough, a minute later they came in a big van. It was a woman and a man driver. They were both very nice! The woman explained that she actually studied history and went to a tourism class to be certified as a guide. In Egypt, the ministry of tourism is very strict and everyone has to pass exams to become a guide. I knew I was in good hands! We started the morning by driving to Giza. I saw all the places I walked yesterday and she explained that Tahir square, which is the big traffic circle kind of thing I had to cross yesterday, is where they had their Arab spring demonstrations in 2010. They call it demonstration square, and it reminded me a lot of Korea, and how they have lots of demonstration squares! We chatted a bit about how tourism and the country have changed, how religion impacts tourism and such. She was fasting as it's the religious holiday for Ramadan, and apologized for being a little low energy, but I appreciated that it wasn't a lot of useless talking. On the way to Giza, which is actually he next city over, I learned that Cairo is where the wealthiest and he poorest live. The poor oftentimes will build houses, but not finish them on the outside, as if you finish a house, you then have to pay tax on it. An interesting idea. I also learned that I was staying in downtown Cairo or old Cairo which is where a lot of small shops, locals, and students live. New Cairo is the ring around old Cairo, with 5 star hotels, new high rises and such. The tour guide said that old Cairo used to be the financial and business district, but now there are shops and malls all over the place. She said it was a little sad, as everyone used to go to old Cairo and meet up and hang out. Now they just go local. She also said it's the third most dense city, which I'm not sure about, and that is how we spent the time on our way! Once we got to the pyramids area, I was in awe. They were so.. grand and large! It was quite amazing. The driver pulled over and bought me a bottle of water, and we were on our way. On buying the tickets, I bought an extra ticket to enter the great pyramid, and got 50% off for being a student! We walked around and the guide explained all sorts of things to me and took a bunch of photos of me. I went inside the pyramid, and was hassled a bit because they didn't believe I didn't have a camera, but I really didn't! In order to get to the chamber I had to crouch and basically crawl up this steep ramp. I was so sweaty and tired because it was a lot of physical labor but also so hot and humid inside. The view and the experience... not sure it was worth it. It was kind of fun, but also just not much to see. It was over before I knew it and I left. After, I was walking to the van when a man approached me about buying postcards and stamps. I didn't know when I would have the chance to do either, so I obliged. I haggled and got it from 50£ to only 25£. I got back to the van and we went to the second and third pyramid. Originally I really wanted to spend some time to sketch, but it was not and I was enjoying myself by just walking around, so I changed my mind! It's hard to do those things when you're on a guided tour, but also just so much easier to not have to deal with everything. The second pyramid is the only pyramid that still has some of the white alabaster, but only on the cap. I also learned that it used to be coated with gold and silver! How neat! It's here that I got some more pictures and then rode a camel. The camel guide was only 10, which made me kind of... feel strange since he's only a kid, but it was a lot of fun. It was really challenging to ride the camel, but definitely worth it. About mid way, I got off, as per the instruction of the kid, and a man rushed towards me with a soda and opened two. I was warned that nothing is free, but I just accepted and then later found out I had to pay. I ended up paying the man a large amount (50£, or about 2.50$) but he had to split it with the camel kid for tip. It was a really weird situation. Anyways, we finished our loop and I walked back to the van. Next stop was the sphinx. It was neat to learn that its purpose was to protect and guard the bodies in the tombs, and that it was cut out of one piece of stone. It used to be surrounded by a funerary and mortuary temple, where they would prepare the bodies! I snapped some pics and after that, we were on our way. Like I said earlier, it's weird not to have spent time sketching the sphinx, but it was also nice just to enjoy my time and be a tourist. After this was the part I wasn't super thrilled about. I knew from reading the reviews that the guides have deals with local merchants that sell people things. My guide asked if I was interested and wanted to go, and I was actually interested in how papyrus is made, and how perfumes were made. She made sure I understood there was no pressure to buy, which I appreciated. The first stop was the papyrus shop. The woman showed me how to make it, and did a demonstration. She also told me that the government only allows certain factories and people to make it, and that each comes with a certificate of authenticity; ministry is strict! At the end she asked if I wanted to buy anything. Truth is, a lot of it was interesting, and I would have bought something, but it was all too big! I felt bad, but also didn't. Next was the perfume maker. I had to decide if I wanted to go. Part of me wanted to say no, but the other part was very interested. So I said yes. I went and had a. Ice cup of mint tea, learned about some of the healing properties and associations with certain flowers and plants, tried some myrrh oil, and actually bought a little essential oil as a souvenir for a friend! It was quite expensive, but oh well! At long last it was time for lunch. We went to a falafel place, and my guide got me a falafel, fries, and some beans. I waited to eat them at the hostel, and after our goodbyes and me tipping, we split up. I went upstairs to my room to put my things down, eat, and cool down. I scarfed my food down and then caught up with the world to relax a bit. I knew I wanted to see some more stuff since it was still a bit early in the day, so I planned a bit. I wanted to see the Coptic churches that I had been learning and reading about since my one in Istanbul, so I hopped on the metro and headed there. Unfortunately, it was closed! Ramadan makes everything close early (which will become relevant later). I still got to walk around and see the outside but I headed back towards the hostel in only a few minutes. I had planned on walking about a mile to see the Ramses monument, but it was so hot I just decided to call it a day and get myself ready. Boy was I wrong. When I entered wifi I received an email from Qatar airlines about my flight to Mumbai from Luxor. It was Luxor to Doha to Mumbai. Because of a travel embargo, no flights to Qatar are allowed from Egypt. I called the help number and after about 45 minutes I reached some kind of resolution. They paid for me to fly from Cairo to Kuwait to Mumbai. Leaving Cairo at 1:30pm, arriving in Mumbai at 4am. Not the best, but whatever. To get from Luxor back to Cairo, I have a 5:30am flight the same day. It's going to be a long day. It was then I tried to book my flight from Luxor to Cairo. The wifi was so slow I couldn't and ended up asking my mom to do it for me later after she was done with work. With that settled, I went to go look for food. I was actually also looking for an ATM. Earlier in the day, I tried to get money out, but it refused my card. Apparently the ATMs close during Ramadan at 3 or 4pm... so ridiculous since the point of having an ATM is so that it's open 24 hours a day. I was so stressed because I only had enough money for a cab, but not enough to pay for the hostel. It was kind of a disaster. I ended up just ordering a pizza and then tried to find an ATM. There are literally no ATMs in Cairo I am convinced. It was so frustrating. I got my pizza, went back to the hostel and decided to do more research. It was then that I learned from a fellow traveler I needed a visa to get into India. I don't know why I had just assumed I wouldn't need a visa. In a panic I searched it. I could do it online. I tried. I failed. Wifi was too slow. I had an hour to get it done before the window closed, as you have to do it 4 days in advance before you land. I texted literally everyone I knew to see if anyone was free and no one was. Finally, one friend of mine helped me, and we did the whole thing, but it was too late. It had already turned to midnight in India. So I will most likely be staying in customs for 24 hour, after landing at 4am. It's going to be kind of a rough time. With that kind of done, I headed back out to find an ATM. I was going to walk back to the park where I found one (across the bridge) when I thought to myself that I would go to the ritz Carlton, because I figured a foreign or at least more affluent hotel would have an ATM. Thankfully, I was right. I got my money, walked straight back to the hostel, grabbed water, walked upstairs, drank almost an entire liter, showered, and now I'm here. Exhausted! I paid for my room (overpaid, I'm sure, but I just really didn't want to deal with arguing about it) and my taxi to the airport tomorrow. I am finishing my pizza and my wings that I bought. The person also sharing my room is really strange and talking a lot. Really not the best or the ideal, but that's life. It's time to eat, pack, get my life together end sleep. I had an amazing day and will continue to have amazing days. Until tomorrow--
