CHEVALIER . Chillingly normal. He might look a bit intimidating and out-of-place in the aisles, but he doesn’t feel out-of-place. He goes in-person just so he can stop by the florist on his way back.

JIN . He’s been asked on dates on the spot because of how sexy and reliable he looks shopping for period products for his SO.

NOKTO . Seems to have a personal stock built-up already, and has no problem going out or ordering to replenish dwindling supplies.

RIO . You wake up on the day of your period every month with a cloche at your bedside containing your favorite period snacks, your preferred products, and a box of tampons with a cute beagle pattern on the wrapping.

KEITH . Homebrews all remedies. He loves how excited you get to hear him explain what each part of the compound does, so he prefers to keep it in-house where he can. • Team Skull

A seemingly normal adventure team doing missions/jobs, but under the surface they have a much darker agenda in operation.

Fynx the Red Panda. The leader of Team Skull. He's a conniving and clever red panda who takes what he wants, does what he wants, with a seemingly charming yet deceiving demeanor. He vows to reawaken the power of the Red Zircon one day and reign supreme over every mobian.

Scratch the Raccoon, a selfish and aggressive punk who is very loyal to Fynx. Being the only one who picked him up when nobody wanted him, and gave him a prosthetic arm, Scratch vows his life to Fynx believing that he would have a glorious life under his rule.

And Timothy (Tim) the Tiger, a strong but gentle bodyguard of Fynx. When they first met, Timothy owed him for helping him out on a family disagreement, and saving his life from a near-to-death accident. Now, he ventures with Fynx to repay him but was it the right choice? Knowing Fynx' true intentions now, Tim regrets it. He wants to be set free from his grasp but unfortunately, he knows how dangerous Fynx could be, that he can slit his throat at any moment and leave him to die alone, so he's trapped being his bodyguard. Forever silenced until someone breaks, or pulls him out to safety

• An update on Iyro's Black Quartz look.

Oh right, I haven't told it yet here, but Iyro used to be in a delinquent group called Black Quartz. He joined mainly to have friends, but when he realized they were doing bad deeds, he starts feeling doubtful about his decision. He wants to leave but he doesn't want to let the members of the group, those who needs his strength, down.

• K3io brothers

Three brothers who only rely on each other. After their mother died from an illness 6 years ago, Ron has been trying to keep his brothers safe, and well sheltered, taking on random jobs to offer help. Now at the current time, they work as a guild team in Stone Guild, taking on many kinds of jobs in the wild.

Ron, the eldest of the three, is very reliable and assertive. Always looking out for his brothers. Has a knack for card and board games, and is somewhat bashful towards women.

Ry, the middle child, is a rowdy and thrill seeking doggo. He likes everything cool and daring. He even wants to be a hero one day and beat-up bad guys. He can get in trouble at times, injuring himself, being a bit reckless which leads to Ron scolding him alot for doing something stupid or dangerous. But over all that fiery passion for something exciting, he still cares about his brothers. Worries about Ron whenever he overworks himself or blames himself for not earning enough, only for the next day Ry surprises him with money to buy food (yet Ron also doubts Ry could've stolen it), and looks out after Rio whenever it's just them too, eventhough he prefers to do something else, he still cherish Rio and gives him candy.

And lastly Rio, the youngest of the brothers. Eventhough he wasn't able to experience abit of school like his brothers did, he still likes learning about the world around him. He has an imaginative mind and an optimistic and warm heart. Eventhough he doesn't know the harshness of reality yet, he still want to help his brothers on their work so they can eat yummy foods, and see them all happy together.

A bit of an Easter egg but here's Ron in the Future as well.

In the future, Ron decided to move to a corporate job instead. Though seemingly impossible since he stopped schooling at an early age, he found his chance when he saw a project hiring people without a diploma and just basing their qualifications on their capabilities. Ron studied hard and managed to get a position. Now he works at the same office Alan (Juliet's dad) works in.

(an explanation to the last pic) When Bony went to Alan's office to deliver him a letter of consent for his daughter, since she does work in their guild afterall, for a group camp/expedition, she coincidentally recognizes a familiar blue dog. Same can be said to Ron when he saw Bony. They haven't since each other in a long time since the brothers left Stone Guild. After that reunion, they decide to catch up, see what the other's lives has been up to.

yo hi once again, i do appreciate your answers and the way we strike our conversation, which is silly i know 😅💟.

lemme reveal this fact of mine...you can call me a newbie since...i knew and played ikepri THIS year 🫣.

i think it was late march 2024, i was busy chatting in the chai app (👀), til this ikepri ad appeared and it was...THAT fifth prince (yes i know he is yves kloss) who had the spotlight 🤭, LIKE DANG...WHY DOES HE HAVE TO BE SO PRETTY AND ATTRACTIVE TOO- like im stunned and in awe because of his beauty and he's a cutie too. a pretty haughty tsundere kitty meow meow- and then THAT ad appears a few more times when im in the middle of using that chai app roleplaying some bots 😭, then i was like 'ykw, im playing this game once just for fun' and here's where i downloaded that app (early april 2024) since i gave up ignoring it and decided to play it instead.

i was like 'dang...look at those attractive princes LIKE THEY ARE SO DANG FINE-', but before i downloaded the app, i ended up going to their wiki just to explore those 8 princes and here is where jin caught my attention...i thought he was a foreign prince but turns out he was the first prince in rhodolite like what 👁️👄👁️, he caught my eye because his name is J I N and im like 'yeah he's cool and hot asf, he's okay', it shocked me because there's a jin in here- now moving on, so i thought chevalier is the oldest...but he's actually the second prince which lead me to confusion...like huh...moving on- when i downloaded the app and before i play the prologue, i ended up going to tiktok to search about them...and it was mostly about gilbert...which i don't even get it...like what makes people so attracted about him? i don't know much about him and let's see if i liked him or not once i got to him at first. and here is where chevalier got me 🤭, THAT edit between chevalier and gilbert got me so feral eidnwkdkekdk, of course i mostly fangirl about chevalier because he's THAT attractive to me, HIS BEAUTY IS OUT OF BOUNDS EIDNEJSK. especially his smirk that got me WILDING- so i kind of kept contuing to see chevalier related tiktoks idk, HES SO DANG FINE EIDNSMSM-.

anyways, so i finally played the prologue and its interesting and going good and i was happy screaming when RIO appeared LIKE OMG HES A CUTE PATOOTIE EIDNSKSJ, but tbh im still waiting to the part ill meet those EIGHT PRINCES also it turns out sariel kidnapped me (emma) into some palace to be belle and yk the rest- i think it was the time emma became belle (i forgor 💀) , so i was still playing the route and here it comes of emma trying save the little boy from that drunk bastard man then her books fall out and omg here's the part i've been waiting for...ITS THE MAN OF MY DREAMS- LEON! OELOEKSISKSKSKEK- now this made slowly fall for him...the way he saved emma and the little boy then also picked up emma books (after chevalier threatened emma for a book), isn't he just so...dreamy? and...charming..? and i was like...'yeah he's the one, HES THE STANDARD-' and HES A LITERAL GREEN FLAG EJDJEKEKE- (HES JUST A BRO TO ME ISTG-), keep in mind that i was also simping for chevalier when he appeared in the prologue 🫣, moving on to the introduction of the princes...they are really handsome in their own ways but leon caught my attention the most...🤭, anyways- when i read each previews of all their routes (ALL 13 OF THEM), i planned to do jin first since he's the oldest but then i decided to do the routes by their released order in eng, so this got me into picking his route 😉✌🏼.

while doing leon's route, it made my liking to him increase more and more and it made me spend it with gems just for me to continue reading his route...but now...IM STILL STUCK IN HIS ROUTE LIKE IT TAKE ME DAYS TO FINISH IT EXCEPT FOR HIS EPILOGUE AND IM STILL STUCK ON HIS EPILOGUE AND I NEED MORE GEMS TO BUY 10 MORE DRAMATIC POINTS GOSH 😭, so ill keep log in to the app everyday to receive more gems little by little...i almost lost my patience there 😔, like ill be playing chevalier's route after his...also im too lazy to grind (i know you mention to get grinding in your early blogs 👀).

oh i see so you had some exposure before you actually started playing the game? i downloaded it and started playing right away so i jumped in blind and ever since the prologue- actually even during the prologue i only had my eyes on leon.

am i the only one that doesn’t buy the premium stories? i am working my way towards buying them all but i just buy the normal story and keep the avatars so i can just breeze through the avatar checks when i need to do collection events.

also look up the right answer dialogue choices so that you can max out, get all the letters, and read the epilogue. also fyi the romantic ends are the canon endings, if that matters to you. other people have pointed out that events reference the romantic endings and stuff like that. but play whatever ending you like. i usually play everyone’s route twice to give everyone a fair chance so i don’t have a preference or recommendation on which ending you should play first for who.

Something I noticed about Universal owning DreamWorks, they seem to be treating DreamWorks with respect. The creators of The Mario Movie are helping Dreamworks out with Shrek 5. They advertised Trolls 3 by putting the trailer before The Mario Movie. The same Mario Movie that I'm pretty sure is gonna break the box office and get tons of people watching. Trolls is considered a loved franchise by the younger audience, so it's not as popular as HTTYD or Kung Fu Panda. So it's kinda a hidden gem for kids. And seeing Illumination advertis it in front of their biggest film like this, it's cute and nice to see. They could've chosen Ruby the Teenage Kraken, but that film already got tons of attention because of the Little Mermaid. So they chose the one that was struggling to be seen.

What I'm saying is, I was a little concerned Universal would treat Dreamworks like an outsider. In the same way, Disney shut down Blue Sky studios after buying it. And then took two of Blue Sky's biggest films, Ice Age and Rio, and beat out more films and cash out of them. Creating a lifeless sequal, Buck spin-off film on Disney + and making a Rio 3. I guess I'm still down about Disney killing off Blue Sky's studios. That studio was just harmless. They created cute and charming films like Robots and Ferdinand. They were average and made an average amount of cash, but imagine what their style of storytelling could've become with some help by a studio that has a similar form of storytelling? And then we have Disney killing off The Owl House and ending serialized shows. The way they treated The Owl House is just horrible. Strange World isn't anything special either, but they did little to no advertising for it.

I guess what I'm saying is, I'm just glad that Universal and Illumination are treating DreamWorks and their creations right. Unlike Disney with some of their properties. Just hope the HTTYD live action film is good and not lifeless.

A simple meeting between looks <3

She met him at the Hard Deck, seeing him flirting with another girl as she sat down in front of counter. She sat quietly, obviously deserving every facial feature and movement, getting jags from the other pilot.

She clearly recognized Rooster, no doubt about it and didn’t notice her Uncle Mav walking into the bar as she spaced out. Suddenly she felt a pair of eyes on her, as she eyed him immediately. Like a deer in headlights, their eyes flicker around the room then back at each other side.

He watched her simple deter aura from across the way. She was gorgeous in his eyes, blonde, pretty cute curls and green almost blue eyes. Lips oh so plump and juicy as a smile rose to the corner of her cheeks. Her class smile just showed creativity and love, attitude towards the attention seeker that he was. Jake didn’t hesitate and walked up to her lowering his drink on the counter, “Hi.”

She turned to face him returning the smile, “Hello there.” Her eyes watch the pilot knowing that ‘Oh he was confident and a good trouble from a mile away’ but she loved that about it. She continued, “May I help you Mr…?”

“Seresin. Jake. At your service ma’am. What’s a fine gal like you doing in a place like this?” He replied with that honey covered southern charm and voice that can make any girl melt. Weak at the knees and hardly breathe kinda charm. Damn was he good. He watched her eyes flash and cheeks blushing a rosy red grin, knowing he got her now..hopefully. He then asked, “Did get your name..”

“Damn your good. You are good, Jake. I’m Amber. Amber Kazansky, Lieutenant or should I call you, Hangman?” She smirked hanging off every word grinning ear to ear, as her cheeks popped out with natural rose color watching his face light up. A deer in headlights watching the realization hit his face like a ton of bricks, of course she figured out who he was. She looked over the paperwork on the pilots and their RIO. She continued her line, “You alright darling?”

To say Jake was supposedly surprised was a nothing, he was beyond flabbergasted at his realization, his eyes said it all. He was crushing on the Admiral’s kid, of course he would. In his eyes, he saw the first opening scene and a level of opportunities he would get with her by his side. He barley knew her, at least only heard stories how she knows things like your Callsign before you even said by just the guessing words..by he never saw the face to claim that beauty or the voice it belong to her. Yup he’s falling in love with images he’s playing in his head.

But he played it cool and laughs enjoying your company. She laughed shaking her head liking the Ken Doll already. In her eyes Amber had plenty of imagine playing in her head of him. She heard of the man who leave you solo in the skys only since he doesn’t know how to play correctly, always prepared for almost anything and has his ego shine whenever needed. She heard and saw on photo of the beautiful man in front of her who smelled like spring sun and warm hot chocolate after a stressful day. Heavenly to her eyes and ears. They stayed in that calming zone of pure silence trying to read each other like a news letter, smiling and a scene of pure chaos playing in the background.

Until Jake broke the gaze they were in grinning brightly, “I would say if i may buy you a drink? But it seems you already got one.” He chuckled pointing to the drink served by Penny just a while back that was sitting next to his. She chuckled matching the grin, “Well you may buy me the next around.”

Neither of the two thought much it the rest of the afternoon, but little did they know they would see each other a lot more often. With the Lieutenant on his mission and The Admiral’s daughter keeping watch of the playing field.

Omggggg, I am so thankful you answered my ask! I love your work and your blog is my safe haven for Brio! I love that you always take the time to answer in depth and reading your blog is just as fun as reading your fics!

Fangirling aside, I agree with everything you said about Mick! Not gonna lie, I read "miscast" and had to take a deep breath for a hot minute 🤣 But I finished reading your response and I see your reasoning. I totally agree!

I hate to keep saying it, but I think the writers really dropped the ball on that one. I do believe they intended him to be ruthless with no loyalties, but when a performance shines through differently from the script, they should adapt to it, especially since it didn't seem like they had much understanding of the character! I agree that Carlos made that character what it was and did the work for them. Mick is my baby and I attribute my love for him to Carlos' performance. All they had to do was follow his lead like many other authors in the fandom did with their fics! Or they should have given him direction to play it meaner if they wanted ruthless, idek at this point. He was such a cinnamon roll and it was so hard to think he would do that, especially since he seemed to end up really liking the girls.

As for Rio and Nick, my interpretation of their whole relationship comes just from the opening scene of 4.08 alone. Again, this is all headcanon because, once again, I don't think they put as much depth into Nick's character as they should have, therefore, I don't feel that we got deep enough into his and Rio's dynamic despite the backstory. There are some holes to fill in!

The scene starts with Rio drawing and Nick playing on his gameboy. He appears discouraged because he can't draw the eyes, so Nick does it for him and then encourages him, telling him "you'll get there, brother" and Rio playfully corrects him saying "cousin". Then when his abuela starts groaning by the oven, indicating something went wrong, little Rio gets up to go check on her and Nick stays playing with his game boy. He tries out Abuela's cookies even though they taste bad and Nick declines to taste it when offered. Then of course comes the pretty on-the-nose rotten egg metaphor where the egg that Rio drops sinks (indicating good egg) and Nick's floats (bad egg)

Rio getting up to go check on his abuela shows he cares for her. He heard her fussing and got up right away to check on her. Meanwhile, Nick stays seated. I think because Rio shows he cares, he is grandma's favourite. Later in the episode, we see them joking around about him buying her a new oven and just being a sweet grandmother/grandson duo. We never got any shot of Nick cutting up with grandma like that.

So Rio is a good-looking guy, charming, smart, very talented in boxing and he's grandma's favourite? Oh, brousin is clearly jealous and insecure and that causes tension between them growing up. I think he spent his whole life trying to prove to himself that he is better than Rio. When you're jealous of someone, there's an aspect of wanting to be the person you envy because really, you envy that person because that person is great. I think Nick hates himself and wishes he was Rio, which is why he does a lot to put him down. He rats him out and gets him arrested, which causes his trainer to drop him and he assumes the boss position in all of their operations and makes him an underling. It must feel validating to "conquer" him.

I also think this is why he switches between calling him cousin and brother. Whenever he refers to Rio as brother, it's to put them in the same boat. For example, during the dinner in 4.06, he doubles down on calling him brother to show Beth he's not different from Rio or rather, that Rio is not better than him. Whoever this suburban mama is who Rio clearly has a thing for, she has to know he's not all that. They are brothers connected by blood, the closest he can be associated with Rio. Another example is when he has to get Rio out of jail in 4.08. He feels so high and mighty telling Rio that he owes him and he says "That's why you got me, brother". It must feel incredibly validating to him to be needed by Rio at this point (same sentiments for the first scene in 4.08 when he draws the eyes for him). Calling him brother is pulling him down from this imaginary pedestal and puts him on Nick's level.

When he calls Rio cousin, it's to lift himself above Rio. He refers to Rio as cousin only twice. The first time is in the same episode when Beth comes to the community garden. In the midst of humblebragging about being a councilman who actually does something, Beth asks him "what does your brother think?" and he corrects her by saying "cousin". It's giving now that we're talking about my accomplishments and how great of a councilman I am, he's no longer my brother, we are not the same, I am better. The second time is in 4.09 at the boxing ring right before he "disciplines" Rio. He feels so on top in that moment because Rio is powerless.

For all these reasons, I think Nick hates Rio because he hates himself. But does Rio hate Nick?

I think you're right, no he does not. The first scene in 4.08 shows they were not always butting heads, but Nick's growing resentment and insecurity caused more strife between them. I believe Rio admired Nick. When Nick ratted Rio out, I don't think Rio fully understood why. He made it seem like growing all of their illegal money-making endeavours was for family and for Rio's benefit and Rio was the sacrifice for a better life. He thought Nick was smart for thinking long term. He probably expected that after being sacrificed, they would be chill again, but that's not the case because Nick hated him. I think not understanding why Nick hated him so much really affected him, which is why he lacks emotional intelligence (c'mon, his brother/cousin gets him arrested, he doesn't walk away, then Beth gets him arrested and he doesn't walk away either. He was taught those were just setbacks in a long term plan. No emotional intelligence!).

I think he only really understood once Beth got shot. Nick used her to torture him under the guise that they really needed her for business (which they did, it was a good idea to involve her, but let's be real, he wanted to toy with Rio). For Rio, there's clearly no reason for Nick to want Beth other than Rio wanting Beth ("always want what I got"). Beth and Rio both chose each other and Nick just could not stand that, could not understand why people always choose Rio. His rage causes him to hit Beth where it hurts. When Beth gets shot, I think Rio finally realizes that his brother figure is not some great man to be admired. There's no method to his madness, he's just mad. It's the moment he realizes that Nick's competitiveness is just a result of him being insecure and jealous. In their final call in prison, Rio does not address him as bro, or cousin, he just calls him "man". I think that shows he finally sees through Nick entirely and addressing him as "man" is him severing their familial ties. I don't think that means he hates him. A part of him will always remember those times when they were cool, but he will never consider him family again.

Oh gosh, this turned into some 500-page essay that might only make sense in my head 🤣 I apologize in advance for this mess!

Anon, this is such a good dissection! All the supporting evidence and analysis! You did such a good job, idk what I could add. I agree: Nick always resented the easy way Rio gained affection from others, and Rio always tried to justify Nick’s cruelties despite them escalating over time. Their natures were set up in the flashback scene and you picked up on so much important detail. I love it. 💕

Catch me thinking of the Moon Boys and Peter/Miles from the Spider-Man game.

WARNING, SPOILERS OF BOTH SPIDER-MAN GAMES MENTIONED

Jake is definitely a father figure to Peter, having known him longer, but a secondary uncle figure to Miles when he’s introduced to the crime fighting family. Physically dragged Peter to his place after Oct and May and took turns with MJ to make sure he ate/slept. Sure, while Khonshu granted him strength with the suit, he had a hard time fighting it out with Peter one particularly nasty night until he broke down crying. With Miles, he takes the kid out in his taxi and just drives until the teen says something. Peter already did a ton to help him with his grief, but to have Jake there listen to his long day at school, or about the music he was working on, or the first time he took out a gunrunner, Jake just listens. They cross paths with him as Moon Knight, and Miles about fainted with delight when he realized he knew someone else’s identity! 

(Jake totally doesn’t shadow Miles a lot when Peter finally lets him go on his own, what are you talking about)

Marc is a surprise the first time Miles meets him. One moment, he and Jake had been saving some small girls from their abusive mother, and the next Jake’s suit had turned from black and white to an almost mummy-like suit of white and gold. He also has lost his Spanish accent, taking on a more Chicago twang as he kneels down by the girls and tells them where to go to get help. He introduces himself when Miles and Marc take to the roof, and the teen is confused until he rings Peter up. The American is more standoffish than Jake, which in an of itself is a feat, but softens to Miles fairly quickly when he starts asking all sorts of questions about DID and himself. Miles isn’t judgmental, no he’s so eager to learn about Marc, and while he doesn’t tell the kid a lot, what he does excites Miles as much as the fact his suit changes. Peter just seems happy to see Marc, who sits with him in private later and cries about Doc, and Marc just puts his arm on Peter’s shoulder. He can’t fix the fact the older man is lost into madness of his own design, but Marc makes a few calls to help Peter get on his way back into scientific work once he’s had some time to mourn both Doc and May.

If he and MJ found buying their desired dream home easier all of a sudden, Marc won’t know what you’re talking about.

Steven adores them both equally, excited to have another spider-son to help coach. He and Peter may not fully come to agreements with science and history as their chosen professions, but there have been many many late nights excitedly chatting over old coffee and cold pizza. Peter never lacks for books, bits and pieces of tech for his upgrades, scientific journals and documentaries to watch, and in turn he sits in on every lecture that Steven is able to give with his...questionable teaching papers. While he despaired at first, Miles was glad that Steven took on helping him through school as much as he could. Late night spider work took out his old time for homework, but to have Mr. Knight perched on a buildings edge reading his work out while Miles answered back through fighting, well it helped. Steven is the first one to meet Rio after Miles and Peter worked her through learning of his identity, absolutely charming her despite his occasional stuttering and silently bickering with Jake to let him try the vegan dishes first please!

Miles ends up graduating with honors, and Steven is cheering as loud as Rio is beside him.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

While the Rio game seemed like it didn’t want to be a Mario & Sonic game, this one delves into it a lot more, making this game feel like a celebration of Mario, Sonic, Tokyo and the Olympics.

This has a full story mode which involves Mario, Sonic, Dr. Robotnik and Bowser getting sucked into a video game made by Dr. Robotnik based o the 1964 Tokyo Olympic games. This is a pixelated game that features the famous classic looks of Mario and Sonic, with Sonic based on his Mega Drive games and Mario based on the original Super Mario Bros. The story switches back and forth between retro and current times, going through each Olympic event in the game, so no need to repeatedly do the same event or grind. It’s the best story more in the Olympic titles.

Throughout the story you’ll also encounter minigames, both 2D and 3D which, for the most part are a lot of fun. There’s ones where Sonic is chasing a train or a taxi, Mario flying a plane in a side scrolling shooter, Mario sneaking through a museum, finding toads in a crowd and some more. These are a great addition and can be played on their own once you’ve gotten past them in the story.

The 2D events are a lot of fun. They’re simple, but they’re supposed to be (apart from Volleyball, which I couldn’t figure out). Diving is surprisingly a lot of fun, Shooting is a bit like Duck Hunt and there’s just a lot of charm across all 10 of them.

The 3D events, for the first time, contained none that I had trouble with or flat out hated. The standard events still have character powers, making returning games like Rugby Sevens even more fun. Skateboarding and Surfboarding are fun new trick-based ones and Karate has a surprising amount of depth to it. You have different controller options, with all except Discus having options that don’t involve motion controls.

Dream events also return, although there are only three of them. Dream Racing is a lot of fun, and is essentially a simplified Sonic Riders as characters race downhill on hoverboards. Dream Shooting is also a target shooting third person shooter and very enjoyable. Karate is the weakest dream event, but still enjoyable.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics is easily the best one in the series, there is a lot of love and detail, right down to lots of trivia about the Olympics.

Ukraine Says It Foiled Russian Plot to Kill Zelensky (NYT) Ukraine’s security services said on Tuesday that they had foiled a Russian plot to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky and other top military and political figures. Two Ukrainian colonels accused of participating in the plot have been arrested on suspicion of treason. The Ukrainian domestic intelligence agency, the S.B.U., said in a statement that the plot had involved a network of agents—including the two colonels—that was run by Russia’s Federal Security Service, or F.S.B., the main successor to the K.G.B. According to the S.B.U., the agents working at Russia’s direction were tasked with identifying people close to Mr. Zelensky’s security detail who could take him hostage and later kill him. It is not the first time that Ukraine has reported a potential assassination attempt aimed at its top leaders. Mr. Zelensky said in an interview with an Italian television channel earlier this year that his security services had told him of more than 10 such efforts.

‘Puking’ Pūteketeke Crowned New Zealand Bird of the Century After John Oliver Campaign

Annual competition inundated with a record number of votes after comedian took the Australasian crested grebe under his wing

New Zealand has crowned a bird that grunts, pukes and has a highly unusual repertoire of mating rituals as its bird of the century.

The threatened Australasian crested grebe, or pūteketeke, was thrown into the global spotlight by a powerful backer, British-American comedian and talkshow host John Oliver.

The announcement for the annual two-week contest’s winner was delayed by two days after the competition was inundated with votes, following Oliver’s announcement during an episode of Last Week Tonight in the US, that he was appointing himself the official campaign manager for the pūteketeke.

His campaign included buying up billboards in New Zealand, Japan, France, the UK, India and the US state of Wisconsin. A plane with a pūteketeke campaign banner also flew over the beaches of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Oliver then appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon dressed in a pūteketeke costume to promote the bird.

The pūteketeke is known for carrying its young on its back, sharing chick-rearing responsibilities, and eating its own feathers to induce vomiting as a method to expel parasites. It has a chorus of grunts, growls and barks and engages in an elaborate set of mating dances, including the “weed dance” where the birds offer each other water weed and the “ghostly penguin” where they rise chest to chest.

The competition, run by environmental organisation Forest & Bird, normally attracts just under 60,000 votes but this year those figures leapt to 350,000 across 195 countries, with 290,374 of those going to the pūteketeke. Thousands of fraudulent votes had to be weeded out, including 40,000 votes cast by a single person for the tawaki piki toka eastern rockhopper penguin.

New Zealand’s national bird, the North Island brown kiwi, came second on 12,904 votes, while the world’s only alpine parrot, the clever kea, came third with 12,060 votes.

“Pūteketeke began as an outside contender for Bird of the Century but was catapulted to the top spot thanks to its unique looks, adorable parenting style, and propensity for puking,” said Forest & Bird chief executive Nicola Toki.

“We’re not surprised these charming characteristics caught the eye of an influential bird enthusiast with a massive following.”

The pūteketeke nests on lakes in the southern part of the South Island and is considered nationally vulnerable. A conservation project started in the 2013 has helped increase the population from a low of 200 in the 1980s to just under 1,000 today.

Oliver’s self-described “alarmingly aggressive” campaign for the bird thwarted efforts from local groups, including primary schools and universities, attempting to push their preferred feathery friends to the top of the leaderboard.

“They are weird puking birds with colourful mullets. What’s not to love here?” said Oliver of the bird.

The competition was launched in 2005 to raise awareness about the plight of New Zealand’s native birds, many of which are threatened, on the brink of extinction or already extinct due to the introduction of pests, human activity and declining habitats.

This year, the organisers included five extinct species on the list and temporarily altered the competition to bird of the century, to mark the organisation’s centenary.

“More than 80% of our native birds are on the threatened species list”, Toki said.

“Pending cuts to the Department of Conservation, the agency tasked with protecting these taonga [treasures] under threat, are a huge worry,” she said. “The world is watching us and how we look after our birds.”

Over the years, the contest has become a lightening-rod for controversy, from crowning a bat the winner in 2021, to accusations of Russian interference in 2019, and claims Australians attempted to rig the contest in favour of the shag in 2018.
