Aqua Teen Hunger Force #80: "Shake Like Me" | April 5, 2009 - 11:45PM | S07E02
A momentous episode. Folks, it’s the “lost” episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Hell, it's loster than "Boston" at this point. It’s the one you can’t stream online or buy digitally or whatever. Hell, it’s even missing from the recent DVD box set. Can we get an Adult Swim Treasures DVD box with an intro from Leonard Maltin? Will it ever be okay to laugh again???
Okay, this is how this write-up is going to go. First I’m going to dryly describe all the racist stuff in the episode. Then I’m going to apologetically tell you that I thought the episode was funny. Then I’m going to pay lip-service to people who might legitimately have problems with the episode. Then nobody is actually going to read this, and I’m gonna go on to watch Duckman or whatever show aired after this. I think it was Duckman. I don’t know, there’s some weird guy on YouTube who makes his own Adult Swim blocks but he includes shit like Duckman and Dr. Katz and I'm starting to believe it's all real. I don’t hate it, but I’d prefer to see Duckman sandwiched between Weird Science and USA Up All Night, with nothing but phone sex ads and promos for Silk Stockings.
A construction crew is dumping green toxic ooze into a neighboring house (the Ruth Powers side, not the Ned Flanders side). Shake tries to stop them by yelling at them a lot, when one of the operators, a black man, gets pissed off and bites Shake. So, he was bitten by a radioactive black man. Eventually signs of Shake’s blackness start coming out; he turns from white to brown, sprouts an afro, sports a bejeweled grill, and now possesses an immaculate vertical leap. Frylock, scientifically testing the authenticity of his blackness, tries to make Shake go in Carl’s pool. But alas, Shake can no longer swim. I’ve heard of MASTER Shake, but CHOCOLATE Shake???
I have never heard of a “chocolate shake”. Anyway, Frylock tries to give Shake his whiteness back, but it just won’t take. Boxy Brown eventually intervenes (is this the first time characters other than Meatwad interact with him?). Boxy, of course, is the original racist character of the show. He encourages Shake to embrace his blackness, but while they are on the basketball court it simply begins to wear off. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted. I mean, if that’s the kind of fun you like having.
Honestly, this episode made me laugh a lot. The joke about him swimming, especially. Also, the part where Frylock gives him a wristwatch after his supposed white conversion in which they straighten his hair and cover him in white house paint. Frylock gifts the wristwatch and says something like “here, time management is going to be real important to you now”. Really funny! I'm not even racist! That's what's so insane about this!
REFERENCE: There’s a scene where Frylock takes Shake to a hockey game in order to whiten him up. There is a hockey guy in the background just bleeding from his neck. That seems to be a reference to Clint Malarchuk, who in 1989 took a skate to the neck and it caused massive blood loss on the ice. He survived! If you just wanna see photos of a hockey goalie hunched over a nasty amount of blood on an ice rink, I recommend googling his name and looking at the image results.
In retrospect, the squirmiest part of the episode is Carey Means participation. I would like to think they cleared these jokes with him beforehand, and I’m sure if I googled around one could definitively answer this. A better version of this blog would be one where I actually take it upon myself to do just that. A better version of this blog would be one where I am also being paid handsomely to do stuff like that. Oh well. But: the main sticking point with me is the idea that Frylock is specifically written to not exactly be black.
There’s an argument to be made that Shake isn’t actually white; they are food products and aren’t afflicted with race. It sorta gets to the problem of whiteness being seen as a “default”. If Shake is white, then that should mean Frylock is black, and Meatwad is retarded. The only reason I don’t think I’m stretching too much for this, is the fact that Frylock defends himself to Boxy Brown that he’s not being “racist” against him. To me, this is the only actual profound misstep of the episode. It’s the thing that cements the fact that they fucked up Frylock’s characterization. It sorta made me feel the same way when I saw an old episode of South Park where Trey Parker voices a black character saying stuff like “actually I’m opposed to hate crime legislation”.
This one is funny as fuck. That's kinda the only thing that matters to me. But I get why they would rather sweep it under the rug. I also get why I sought out an old iTunes release of the episode and keep it on my computer. I get why I won’t get rid of my DVD copy of it.

Chapter 4
Henry sat on the bed, happily watching Opal as she meticulously pulled out garment after garment and hung them up in the closet. She hummed softly as she worked, every so often stopping to squint at the yards of fabric on this skirt or that, pulling at loose threads and muttering something about needing to steam press one of them. There was something so domestic about this, even though they were in a hotel room in an unfamiliar place and still--despite getting to know each other online—trying to figure each other out.
It amazed him how much being in person changed everything; the reality had settled in that they may have talked a lot about anything and everything, but that was far different than being in person and having the physical connection with someone. They both still had a lot to learn about each other and he planned on spending every possible minute with her doing just that. There was no doubt in his mind that this was right; the feeling of peace as he watched her move around the room was like nothing he’d ever experienced with another woman.
Opal finished with her last piece—a voluminous peachy pink ball gown skirt--and moved back to the foot of the bed to sit down beside him. She was close, but not touching him; he wondered at that and all the times he noticed the almost imperceptible flinch when he reached out to touch her. Of course, he understood she didn’t have the experience with the opposite sex he did, but the reaction made him wonder if she was scared of his touch for some other reason.
Was she? Scared of him? He couldn’t imagine scaring someone, but he supposed he came on strong at times. And in this situation, he was a believer of instituting a bit of aversion therapy in that he tried to insinuate himself in her space. He wasn’t going to let her run away; she herself had admitted to running on more than one occasion with others.
To that end, he did not let her sit too far away for long. He gathered her in his arms and pressed his lips to her forehead, right at her hairline, smelling the coconut shampoo in her hair. She was tense for a moment, then her body relaxed, moulding against him. He wanted to kiss her—really kiss her—but considering the reaction, he knew he had to wait.
“This is going to be an excellent weekend,” he murmured. Reassurance… for her and, honestly, for him.
She chuckled. “Says the guy who only has two costumes and like twenty-five geeky shirts. We’re not going to be able to go out much incognito.”
“You’d be surprised how a guy can blend in with the crowd,” he said. “Even me.”
Opal eyed him in suspicion. “Somehow I doubt that.”
“You know how busy these weekends are,” he said. “People don’t really stop to look unless you’re flashy and in an impressive cosplay. And I will have you know I walked around San Diego Comic Con with a Guy mask and a geek shirt and no one cared. Literally, not even Will when I took a photo with him.”
“Will?”
“Smith,” Henry said. “Deadshot? Suicide Squad?”
“I know who Will Smith is!” she scoffed and playfully smacked his arm. “By the way, I am happy that you agreed to do the steampunk one with me. I know Amber thought I was crazy when I had her make you the cloak.”
“I’m glad she did it. She really made all these costumes?” Henry asked.
Opal nodded and smiled. “She taught herself to sew when she was pre-transition. Her mom and dad wouldn’t buy her girl clothes, so she saved up money for an old sewing machine from the thrift shop and started making her own.”
Though he wasn’t Amber’s greatest fan—there were some things Opal had related to him he didn’t particularly agree with—he understood their relationship was long and deep and he could no sooner understand the bond they shared as friends of twenty years than Amber could understand the bond he and Opal shared.
“Oh.” He smiled. “Well, I’m glad she did all the sewing. I did make my Phantom mask and it’s pretty badass. It was like putting a computer together, all intricate moving parts with gears and such. I was so worried about it in my luggage, I carried it on the plane.”
“Can I see it?”
“Eventually. I want you to be surprised.”
“And did you remember the signet ring?”
He wiggled his pinky by way of showing off where he would wear the aforementioned ring. “Yes, it’s in my bag.”
Opal laughed. “Who the heck has a signet ring, anyway? It’s so impossibly crusty British upper class.”
“You said it was the sexiest thing on the Phantom!”
“Sure, on the Phantom,” Opal teased. “You, my good sir, don’t need a ring to be sexy.”
She reached out for him, as though to wrap her arms around his neck and pull him down to her, but she awkwardly stopped herself mid-movement, hesitating, then resting her hands in her lap instead.
He reached out and took her hands into his, wrapping her arms around his neck to pull her closer yet. She craned her neck to look up at him. “Sorry,” she said sheepishly.
“Stop apologizing,” he instructed. “You shouldn’t have to apologize for anything you want. I refuse to apologize for anything I want.”
Opal huffed. “I know. I’m just awkward.”
“You know you can touch me.” He smiled. “I will never tell you to not touch my hand or my arm or my neck or my— ”
“I get it,” she said, an edge of attitude in her tone. “Like I said, I’m awkward and I always feel like I should ask permission.”
He frowned. “Why?”
Opal looked up again, meeting his eyes for a long time without speaking. She wanted to say something, to divulge some important piece of information. He could see it on her face, but she shook it away and went another direction. “I just keep worrying that if I touch you, you’re going to be nothing more than an apparition.”
“You’re going to have to kill me to get rid of me at this point,” he admitted. “But seriously, Opal, Princess, you have my tacit permission to touch me wherever and whenever you want. If I don’t want to be touched, you’ll know. Got it?”
“Got it,” she said shakily.
She licked her lips and it took everything in his power to not devour her mouth in that moment. Maybe she wanted him to, with that reaction, but he wasn’t sure it was the right time. In fact, if he went that route, they weren’t going to be leaving the bedroom for some time, and he had already made appointments for them elsewhere.
Henry let go of her. “Good. Come on! We have a long day of pampering to get to at the spa.”
“Henry, you didn’t have to do that,” she said. “I would be perfectly happy just hanging out up here.”
“Nonsense, I wanted to. You’ll find that acts of service and gifts are one part of my love language.” He leaned in close to her ear, brushing his lips across her cheek, then the shell of her ear, before whispering, “As is physical touch.”
He delighted at the shiver that vibrated her body against his. As he moved away, he noted how her pupils had dilated in obvious lust. Never to be one to pass up the opportunity, he moved to the other and kissed that ear before purring again, “And trust me, Opal. I plan on touching you a lot.”
Opal shivered more violently, and only stopped when a moan escaped her plump lips. “Curse you and your sex on legs.”
Henry laughed and stood up, holding his hand out to her. “Come on, Princess. We’re going to be late.”
“Heh,” she murmured, now breathless. “I suppose I never considered how disarming real-life dirty talk was going to be.”
“Princess, you’re in for a big surprise if you think that’s the extent of what you’ll hear out of my mouth.”
Opal rolled her eyes at him, straightening her shirt and smoothing out her hair, though it looked perfectly fine. It wasn’t like he’d wrecked her like he truly wanted. Because he was a gentleman. Yes. A gentleman.
A gentleman who needed a cold shower at some point.
God help him during the couples massage he’d booked.
###
The spa itself was like any other spa Henry had ever been to—sedate taupe walls with muted lighting and the softest flute music floating through the air. Nothing special. However, Opal breathed in deeply as they entered, and he turned to see her eyes flutter closed for a brief second. Her lips quirked up in a beatific smile.
“Already enjoying it?” he asked.
She shrugged. “It just seems relaxing. I’ve never been to a fancy spa before.”
“Really?”
“Yep,” she said, glancing around the room again. “Apparently this is going to be a weekend of firsts.”
He opened his mouth to reply, but an overeager woman came out from behind the front desk.
“Oh, Mr. Cavill,” interrupted the woman, already effusive in her manufactured charm. “Welcome! We’ve been expecting you. We do hope your trip to Atlanta was uneventful.”
He inclined his head in recognition. “It was fine, but I’ve already been here for work. My girlfriend is the one who just arrived this morning.”
At the mention of the word “girlfriend,” the brunette clerk turned her wide, starstruck eyes to the woman beside him. Opal’s grip on his hand loosened, as if she meant to pull away from him, but he squeezed tighter to reassure her. Clearly, the interaction at check in hadn’t helped issues any. What’s more, he’d be lying if he said he hadn’t noticed the slight change in the clerk’s demeanor when she looked at their clasped hands and then at Opal. Opal wasn’t imagining things.
But this, also, wasn’t something new to him. He could be with any woman and other heterosexual women always did the doubletake, sizing up their competition. It was natural and unfortunately overrepresented in the land of celebrity when the public saw public figures as their commodity, and not as a real person.
A real person who could care less about a brunette flipping her hair flirtatiously over a shoulder. He wasn’t going to mess around with a hamburger when he already had a steak, just like Paul Newman once said.
Opal wasn’t used to it, however, and the previously relaxed grin on her lips flattened into a hard line. The small muscles in her hand had tensed at the other woman’s worsening reaction. There was a split second where he thought Opal might bolt, so he quickly switched tactics, wrapped an arm around her and pulled her to his side. He kissed the top of her head, again feeling her tense.
When he looked again for the clerk, he found her back behind the desk, pulling something up on her computer. Business as usual, then. “Right, Mr. Cavill, we have you both down for the couple’s package?
“That’s right,” he said, pressing his hand lightly to the small part of Opal’s back to guide her forward.
“Okay, great.” The clerk’s fake smile was back on her face. “They will call for you momentarily.”
He nodded in understanding and glanced down at Opal again. She turned her face up to look at him, her bright eyes blinking at him. “Does that include massages?”
“That’s generally like the number one thing to do at a spa,” he explained.
“There’s not going to be, uh—” she paused and swallowed hard around a lump in her throat. “What if my massage therapist is male?”
Henry snorted a laugh and lifted his hands up in front of her, flexing his fingers. “Princess, these are the only male hands that are going to be touching you this weekend.”
“What if there’s a woma—”
“Will you stop worrying?” he chided good-naturedly. “I requested one female and one male. They do this on purpose just for this reason. Though, there are those that don’t care.”
“I just…”
He frowned. “What is it?”
“I’m not naturally good with people touching me,” she admitted, though it was soft and breathy, as though said without enough air in her lungs.
He desperately wanted to push further into that discussion, but their attendants came out to guide them to the changing rooms. Opal smiled shyly, blushed, but instead of retreating from him, she curled herself against his side as though he were her protector from the Big Bad Massage Therapists.
And he really liked that. It played to that caveman hindbrain of his; he could play the protector. No, scratch that he wanted to be Protector, with a capital P.
Whoever or whatever created this touch shyness in her would need to be dealt with, too. However, it did lend important context to her unluckiness in love. Most guys would take her reactions as turn offs or too much work and run, but he didn’t see it like that. Maybe it was because they’d had more time to develop such a strong emotional connection online. He wanted to make it work. He wanted to make it all better. So, he planned to put in the effort it required to understand.
“I’ll see you in a few, darling,” he murmured.
“Okay,” she said, the shakiness of nerves evident in her tone. He watched her walk, forgetting just a moment of his concern and instead zeroed in on the way her hips moved in the tight denim that encased them. A thought quickly floated across his mind that he must find the underlying cause of Opal’s touch shyness as soon as was humanly possible. He wasn’t sure how long he could abstain from truly touching her the way he wanted to—or feeling guilty each time she recoiled.
The female therapist must have said something funny because Opal tossed her head back and laughed, defusing her nerves and snapping his attention to the situation. Opal and the therapist turned for one last glance back at him. It relaxed him to see the smile return to Opal’s lips.
When they were finally behind a closed door, Henry followed the slight male massage therapist back into the changing room. When he initially made the appointment, he specifically requested a male and female therapist team; he did it at first because he didn’t want Opal to get the wrong impression about another woman’s hands on him. And though it was unlikely she would have had a male therapist anyway, as there were so few in the profession, he certainly didn’t want to see another man’s hands rubbing all over her. Now he was glad he thought ahead.
He stripped down and replaced his clothes with the robe and slippers provided by the spa. As with all standard sized robes he’d ever worn, the sleeves were tight against his biceps and the tie barely closed the robe, but it did the job. When he entered the warm, lowly lit treatment room, he sat in one of the chairs and waited for Opal. He smiled when she walked in, noting how tightly she clutched the edges of the soft robe between her breasts.
“Ready for this?” he asked.
Her eyes snapped to his, and she gave him a manic little chuckle. “Did you know you have to be completely naked?”
Henry grinned. “I did.”
“They let me keep my undies on, but still,” she said.
Henry stood up and went over to her. “Opal, maybe I should have said this before… if you don’t want to do the massage, you can choose anything else from their services. This is supposed to be a fun, relaxing experience. If it’s not—”
She quickly pressed her fingers to his lips, stopping him mid-sentence. “Stop, I’m fine. Really. If I can’t take my clothes off for this, how am I going to in 24… 48… whatever hours?”
“Well, you’d be more comfortable with me after more time together, for one,” he said after taking her hand away from his lips.
She sighed. “I just don’t have the body to be showing my curves off to everyone, you know?”
“I think your curves are lovely. There are a few I want to become better acquainted with,” he said.
The visible part of her chest flushed bright red as he slid his fingers down the open edge of her robe. He teased her by pulling it away from her body slightly, testing how far he could take this without her fainting. Her breathing had already become shallow, her eyes had closed, and even though he wasn’t touching her body, he felt the soft rhythmic whisper of fabric against his fingers as her heart pounded against it.
“As a matter of fact,” he started, “I plan on getting to know these curves better this evening. If you’ll let me, of course.”
Her long eyelashes fluttered open to reveal sky blue eyes that glittered in the low light. There was a mixture of lust and fear there, wrestling with each other. She gave him a slight nod and bit her lower lip, no doubt as a nervous reaction, but he had no control over the pleasure signal it created in his own body. Henry smiled and stepped back, granting her a brief reprieve as he moved strategically behind the massage table.
Her assessing gaze dropped down the length of his robed body, her lips slightly parted, still breathing shallowly. He took the opportunity, holding her gaze with his, to let his robe drop. She might have issues with her body, but he had no problem showing off all that God gave him, as well as all the parts he had worked very long hours in the gym to develop over the years.
Her squeak and deeper blush were worth it, but to her credit, she didn’t turn away. He turned so she could get a better eyeful of his arse as he slid under the warm sheets on the table. He turned his head to find her frozen in place.
He nodded at the tie on her robe… the one her fingers clutched like a lifeline. “Go ahead, Princess,” he purred. “Your turn.”
“Not a chance, Cavill. Turn your head,” she said.
He let out an exasperated sigh and did as she asked. He wanted so badly to look at her, to drink in her curves, but he had to be true to his word and follow her lead. It was the only way she was going to trust him—that much was clear. So, he rested his head on his folded arms with eyes closed and listened to her shimmy under her own blanket.
When she finished, he opened his eyes. “You doing okay?”
She nodded. “I am. I know I don’t seem like it, but I really am thrilled to be here with you. It’s a lot to take in all at once. You, all the months of talking and not working out who you were, and just, I don’t know. Like I said before, I keep thinking I’m going to wake up and you won’t be real, and you’ll just evaporate like a dream.”
He reached his hand out to take hers. He kissed the back of it. “I’m very much here, and I’m very much into being with you. I’m glad you didn’t leave this morning when you found out who I was.”
She laughed. “I don’t think my legs would have worked well enough to leave, anyway. But, still, I’m not that cruel. I’m not just going to get up and leave. I may be hella nervous, but I’m made of stronger stuff than that.”
“I know you are,” he said finally, squeezing her hand.
Opal shrugged and grinned mischievously. “Besides, where would I get a hotel room at this point in the game? You’re pretty much stuck with me, roomie.”
Henry laughed. “There’s no other person I’d rather be stuck with.”
“You say that now…” she teased.
“Unless there are hidden tentacles under that blanket, you’re not going anywhere,” he said. “And even then, I’d think twice.”
Opal giggled for a long time at that, finally settling down, but not before saying to him, “No one would believe me if I told them I was waiting for a couples massage with you and we were talking about tentacle porn.”
He meant to respond to that, but one of the therapists knocked on the door to begin their massages, effectively ending their conversation. At least they had conversation to fall back on—good conversation, fun conversation. That had always been their strength as they got to know each other online.
If there was communication, then anything was possible.

Some tips for broke artists out there
Because of quarantine, I know many people are beginning to create stuff. Here are some tips for you broke artists out there (most are a bit obvious)
Digital Stuff:
- Some schools give students free adobe subscriptions so check! (There are lots of helpful stuff such as adobe animate and photoshop)
- Try some free drawing programs such as krita, fire alpaca, ibis paint x, medibang, and autodesk sketchbook
- Flip-a-clip and iMovie can help you make animatics/animations
- If you’re low on storage (haha me) Exporting your art to some file holder like onedrive or google drive might be a good idea
Traditional Stuff:
- If you soak cheap colored pencils in water for a few minutes, it removes an outer waxy layer and they become easier to blend and stuff
- Soaking dry markers (think: crayola or crazy art markers) in water, they end up being some pretty decent watercolors
- Sharpen your scissors by cutting some aluminum foil
- Use an old magazine as a paint palette. The glossy pages won’t soak up the paint
- If you want something to paint on, try a cereal box painted over with a solid cover
- Use cheap hair conditioner to soften brush bristles and stuff
Cosplay:
- Check around the house if there is something that you can just re-purpose for your cosplay needs (Ex: putting white tape on old hospital scrubs to make a UA training uniform or something)
- If you’re making armor, I’d suggest using craft foam over using EVA foam
- If you can’t buy a heat gun, a hair drier works
- Same with a hair straightener and a curling iron. Just use a curling iron with the clamp thing
- You can make a wig out of yarn and old stockings (I’ve done it before)
- Is worbla too expensive? I’m using some cardboard cereal boxes for the hand parts of armor and its working pretty well so far
All:
- If you’re gonna buy something online, USE DISCOUNT CODES!!! (duh)

Digital Paradise | Read on ao3
Read part one | Ao3, tumblr.
Alec knew his boyfriend made music. He just didn’t know other people knew Magnus made music.
Or, how Alec Lightwood finally figured out that his boyfriend is famous and how he started a storm on twitter in the process.
In hindsight, Magnus being famous made a lot of sense.
Magnus and Alec didn’t really go out for dates. The couple of times they had, Magnus had taken Alec to a fancy restaurant where he’d made reservations beforehand. They were always sat somewhere in the back, somewhere private. At the time, Alec had just thought Magnus was trying to impress him. He’d also thought maybe Magnus was hoping they’d get up to something in the back of the restaurant but Alec wasn’t comfortable enough kissing in public to ever make a move.
He was happy he hadn’t now. He doubted Magnus would have been upset but Alec would have been a little embarrassed knowing that wasn’t what he had been trying to insinuate with the private location. They also didn’t go out in public much at all, even for simple things. When they went to get coffee in the morning, Alec would run in alone or they’d go to the drive through.
Alec had written that off as Magnus not wanting to get dressed in the morning. Which was fair but it was other things too. Magnus didn’t go grocery shopping with him. The one time he had, it had been so late and he kept his sunglasses on the whole time they were inside. Alec thought it was weird but still, he hadn’t asked.
It wasn’t that Magnus had been lying to him or trying to hide anything. Alec had just been so oblivious. Magnus even told him once when Alec asked why he didn’t want to come inside when they were ordering food. He said, ‘I don’t want anyone to recognize me right now.’
That should have been the day Alec put it together. That should have been the day he realized Magnus was famous and asked more questions. Instead, Alec had thought maybe he knew someone who worked inside. Maybe an ex, he remembered assuming. He hadn’t wanted to press for more details. He just went and got their food.
Now, Magnus wasn’t innocent either. Magnus admitted that he knew Alec didn’t understand how famous he was and he’d never gone out of his way to try and explain it. Weeks after Alec had outed them on twitter, they sat curled together getting drunk off wine while Magnus explained, laughing, ‘I just thought you didn’t understand how famous I was. I didn’t realize you didn’t know I was famous at all.’
Magnus insisted he’d have explained it to him, had he known. It was a big decision, deciding to be public with someone who was as famous as Magnus was and Alec had made that decision completely unknowingly. Alec’s life was different now, just because he was Magnus’ partner.
Magnus had been scared he would regret it but Alec never did. It was nice to understand Magnus’ life more and it was kind of nice that so many people Alec didn’t know knew he was Magnus’ boyfriend. Even if Alec was never remembered as anything else, ‘Magnus’ boyfriend’ wasn’t a bad thing to be known for.
For a while, Alec’s interaction with Magnus’ fame had been limited to online. Alec used twitter now, or he tried to remember to. He had never been great with social media but he posted pictures of his cat sometimes. He posted one of Magnus and Church, which everyone had really liked. He also asked questions about internet things he didn’t understand. All of Magnus’ fans were more than willing to explain stuff to him.
Then, Magnus’ fans had bled into Alec’s real life. The first time it happened, Alec had been running to the store for Izzy. It was late. Alec had been working all day. It was one of the rare days where he hadn’t gotten dressed and straightened out his hair before he went to his desk.
In other words, Alec didn’t look too hot when he ran into the store. His hair was a mess. He’d thrown on pants but he was wearing a loose almost dirty t-shirt. He’d just been running in because Izzy asked him to buy her some tampons.
He hadn’t expected anyone to recognize him at the store. So, of course someone had. He’d been cradling a box of tampons, a pint of ice cream, a bag of jelly beans and a little chocolate rose Alec had found when suddenly, someone next to him had almost screeched.
“You’re Magnus Bane’s boyfriend!”
Alec had spun and the look on his face was so bewildered that the person who’d spoken, a girl about Izzy’s age, looked a little apologetic.
“Sorry!” She continued, pulling out her phone as she kept speaking. “I’m just a huge fan of Magnus. You guys are so sweet.” She held up her phone questioningly and Alec blinked at it, not understanding what she was possibly indicating. “Could I have a picture?” She asked finally.
Oh. For a moment, Alec was still confused. He understood that Magnus was famous. He got why people would want to take photos with him but he was no one. He was just Magnus’ boyfriend. Why would anyone want to take a photo with him? “Okay.” Alec said, frowning a little.
The girl was clearly put off by Alec’s expression. He was about to reassure her again that it was okay if she really wanted a picture but she lowered her phone a little and then spoke less excitedly. “It’s okay if you don’t want to.” She said rather politely.
“No.” Alec shook his head, his eyes widening a little. “I’ve just-” Alec fumbled with his words for a second, shifting the stuff he was holding in his hands so he wouldn't drop them. The last thing he needed was tampons covering the floor. “No one had ever asked me that before.” He explained finally, attempting a smile that probably came off a little more chaotic than he had planned.
This time, it was the girls turn to look surprised. “Oh.” Her expression brightened into a smile once again as she laughed. “Well, I’m honored to be the first to ask.”
Alec practically sighed with relief as she spoke. He hadn’t upset her.
Before Alec could even contemplate how he must look right now, she held up her phone, giving Alec just enough time to try to smile before she took the picture, thanked him and darted away. Alec found himself left standing in the center of the isle, still clutching all his things.
Alec raced to check out. He jittered in line until he could put all his stuff down, ask the clerk how she was, pay and then race outside. The second he reached his car, he tossed his stuff into the passenger’s seat and he called Magnus.
Magnus was away (working on a new album, Alec now understood). Alec had told him before he’d gone in the store that he’d call him when he got home, so when Magnus answered he was understandably a little caught off guard.
“Hello, Darling.” He’d cooed in that tone that normally made Alec feel like he was melting inside. “You’re home already?”
“No, I’m in my car.” Alec spit out and before Magnus could process that sentence, he kept speaking. “I met someone in the store who likes you. I was shopping for Izzy and I was holding a bunch of stuff. I didn’t do my hair today and I didn’t change my shirt. You’d have hated the shirt I was wearing.” He was pretty sure Magnus had said so the last time he’d seen him wearing it and that was before it was due for a wash. “Then this girl asked if she could take a picture with me and I think I upset her for a second but then she took the picture and she seemed happy and she ran away.” Alec took a deep breath he didn’t realize he hadn’t paused to take the whole time he’d been rambling.
On the other end of the line, Magnus also stayed silent as he assumably tried to process everything Alec had said. “Okay…” He said slowly. “So, you met a fan and took a picture?” He summarized.
“Yes.”
“And this…” Magnus trailed off for a second as he audibly tried to piece together Alec’s frantic nature. “-this upset you?” He questioned finally.
“No.” Alec exclaimed instantly. After he said it, he paused and questioned himself. “Well, if I had known someone would want to take a picture with me I’d have tried to look better. I was holding a bunch of stuff and I was dirty and my hair wasn’t done-”
On the other end of the phone, Alec heard Magnus laugh. “Darling, your bedhead is a sight to behold. I’m sure you looked absolutely adorable.”
Alone in his car, Alec blushed. Quietly, he asked. “You’re not upset I made you look bad?”
Magnus’ answer was instant. “Of course not.”
Alec took another grounding breath and all at once, he felt better. “Okay…” Peering around his car, Alec caught sight of the pint of ice cream that was probably completely melted in the New York summer heat. “Oh god, I forgot I bought Izzy ice cream. I have to go.”
“Alright.” Magnus responded, sounding as relieved as Alec did that he was no longer stressed out about this. “Get Izzy her ice cream. Call me when you get home.”
Alec sat the ice cream up, hoping nothing would leak out onto his seats. He turned his car on and cranked the AC before he reached to end the call. “I will. I-” Alec cut himself off before he kept speaking, realizing last second that he almost said something that he’d only thought in his head before. “I miss you.” He amended. “I'll call you soon.”
Alec hung up before Magnus could respond and then he groaned. It was far too earlier for him to almost slip up and say something like that to Magnus. Far far too early. Alec put his car into drive and started heading towards Izzy’s, gnawing at his lip all the while.
“You almost said you love him?” Izzy asked with wide eyes. She was sitting up on the couch, eating the mostly melted pint of ice cream while Alec tried to melt into the chair he was in. “Alec!”
“I know!” Alec groaned and buried his face in his hands.
“How long have you been dating?” She asked, even though Alec knew she knew the answer. She was far too invested in Alec’s love life to not remember how long they had been together.
“Three months.” Alec mumbled anyway.
“Alec!” She snapped again. “Oh god, you’re going to be one of those guys to say it for the first time during sex.”
“I am not!” Alec rebutted instantly even though he wasn’t quite sure it was true. Now that he had almost said it once, he was scared when it would try to slip out next. “I wouldn't want to say it then! He’d think I only said it because we were having sex.”
“You almost said it because you were distracted that a fan spoke to you.”
Groaning louder, Alec sunk a little further in his seat until he was almost comically sprawled over. “I know. I’m screwed. I’m going to say it and I’m going to scare him off.”
Izzy thought about it for a moment as she ate the ice cream soup Alec had bought. “Well-” She said, gesturing with her spoon. “He has to feel strongly about you to be okay with everyone knowing you’re dating. That’s a big deal, Alec. If he didn’t think he was going to stay with you, he probably would have been upset when everyone found out.”
That was true but Izzy was forgetting that Magnus hadn’t decided to tell everyone about them. “I did that though.” Alec insisted instantly. “It was too late to take it back when Magnus found out. I had already posted it. I didn’t even ask him-”
“You didn’t know.” Izzy pointed out calmly.
Alec ignored her. “Maybe he was upset about it and he just didn’t say.”
“Magnus did choose to retweet it and tell everyone it was true. He could have retweeted it and just said you were some random guy, if he really wanted to.”
Frowning, Alec nodded. “Yeah, I guess. That doesn’t mean he’s ready for me to tell him I love him.”
“So…” Alec could hear the smile in Izzy’s tone before she even finished her sentence. “You meant it? You love him?”
Groaning, Alec stood up. “I told Magnus I’d call him when I got home. I have to go.” He said quickly, not meeting her eyes as he snatched his jacket up and started moving towards the door.
“Right.” She said, mockingly. “Just don't tell him that you love him.”
“Yes, thank you for the reminder Izzy.” Alec mumbled as he shoved her front door open and walked through it. He was such a good brother. He went to the store for Izzy. He got her whatever he wanted and all he got in return was mocked.
“Thank you big brother!” She yelled after the closing door.
Alec did not say ‘you’re welcome’ but then in the car, he felt a little bad. ‘I’ll call you later.’ He texted her. ‘Sorry the ice cream was melted.’
He also noticed that he had a notification from Magnus. Izzy had shown Alec how to manage his notifications, so he wasn’t overwhelmed with everyone and he could just focus on the ones that mattered- aka, the ones from Magnus.
‘I knew you looked adorable.’ Magnus had written above the photo of Alec and the girl that had somehow made it onto twitter and already gotten a lot of attention in such a short amount of time. Alec looked down to the photo and grimaced. He looked less than adorable but he scrolled up and read Magnus’ words again instead of looking at the photo any longer.
As long as Magnus somehow thought he was cute, that was all that mattered. Alec hearted it.
For a couple of days, it seemed like all was well. Alec didn’t slip up and tell Magnus he loved him, even though he was exceptionally worried about it. Magnus had been away all week though. The real test would be that night, when Magnus was coming back to New York and more specifically, coming back to Alec’s apartment.
If there was anytime Alec would slip up and say it, it would be to Magnus’ face. It was hard to think straight around Magnus, let alone try to censor any thoughts that tried to come out of his mouth. Alec had said such stupid things to Magnus before. ‘I love your face.’ He’d said once because obviously that was smooth as hell.
A couple of hours before Magnus was due to land, Alec distracted himself by making dinner. There was never a more romantic time to accidentally and completely inappropriately blurt out ‘I love you’ then over a homemade dinner. At least maybe Magnus would be distracted by the good food.
That was Alec’s thought but then he overcooked the chicken, so the only thing Magnus would be distracted by was the bad homemade food.
Alec had timed it so that dinner would be done right around when Magnus would be getting there but then, Magnus’ flight was delayed so Alec had an hour to kill while his overcooked chicken got cold. Reasonably, he decided to go through his twitter notifications.
He got so many that he couldn’t go through and talk to everyone but he tried, especially if someone in particular was being really nice. He felt bad ignoring people even though Magnus told him he didn’t have to.
Alec went through and hearted a few comments people had left on his last post and then, his eyes started to catch something else he was being tagged in. Alec frowned before he clicked on one of the notifications randomly. Instantly, he was greeted with that horrible photo of himself that Magnus had thought was ‘adorable’.
Alec scrolled until he could see all the replies people had left on it. Instantly, Alec was frowning a little deeper. There were normal comments, some talking about Alec’s messy hair and how sweet he looked (none about his shirt, thankfully) but then, Alec noticed that there were a lot of comments about what he was holding.
The tampons, the ice cream, the candy and the chocolate rose he’d got Izzy. Alec hasn’t had a place to put them down or time to really think about if he should. The girl had just asked for a photo and she’d taken it. Alec had been more concerned with his appearance than what he was buying but now, as Alec read what people were saying, he realized for the first time that it did look a little odd.
Magnus’ fans knew he was away for the week. He’d been posting about it and putting videos on snapchat (another app Alec hadn’t even attempted to use). It was also clear Alec had not gone with him. So, for a photo to surface of Alec holding rather… feminine supplies along with a romantic looking chocolate rose.
Alec groaned loudly. Of course, it looked like Alec had been going to see a woman. He had been but that woman had been his sister. Magnus’ fans clearly didn’t know that. Alec was aggravated at first but as he kept reading through the comments, his aggravated bled into something else.
Before Alec knew it, he had frustrated tears in his eyes. He and Magnus had been dating for nearly three months. Alec had only been publicly dating Magnus for a little over a month and already, he’d messed up. Already, he’d made trouble.
Alec knew Magnus wouldn’t actually think he was going to see some mystery woman. Magnus knew he was buying all that for Izzy but Magnus’ fans still thought he hadn’t been. Magnus’ fans still saw that photo and thought Alec had been sneaking around Magnus’ back, only to be caught when someone happened to recognize him and ask for a photo.
Some people had even started commenting on all those crying faces they normally put when Alec did something nice (Magnus said they were nice crying because Alec was sweet. Alec didn't get it), lamenting on how they had thought Alec was so nice. Key word, thought.
By the time Magnus’ flight landed and he texted Alec that he was on the way, Alec was brushing away tears as he texted him back.
Alec didn’t cry easily. He wasn’t a baby. He wasn’t exceptionally emotional either but the thought of all of Magnus’ fans thinking he’d cheat on Magnus broke his heart. He’d never cheat on Magnus and to even think people would think he would-
Alec brushed another stray tear aside. It wasn’t good for Magnus either, for everyone to think his boyfriend was an asshole. He was probably getting so many messages about it. Everyone was going to focus on that and not on the music Magnus was making. He was probably going to lose money.
Alec’s plan had been to compose himself before Magnus got there but he’d been so wrapped up in his thoughts that he hadn’t even noticed how much time had gone by until he heard the knock on his door. Alec shoved his phone into his pocket and tried frantically to brush his tears away before he darted towards the door.
He might have taken a second to try to compose himself a little further, if he realized quite how bad he looked but the only thing he’d been thinking about was that he couldn’t make Magnus wait in the hallway after an eight hour flight.
Alec pulled the door open and tried to smile at the sight of his boyfriend on the other side.
Magnus was grinning. He darted forward before he really seemed to take in Alec’s face and wrapped his arms around his neck as he dropped his bags. “Alexander.”
Alec melted into the touch instantly. A soft sigh left his lips and he tilted his head into the curve of Magnus’ neck. “Hey.” He murmured, trying to sound a little more casual than he felt.
It was either his weak ‘hey’ or the fact that Alec didn’t let go to let Magnus come inside that seemed to tip Magnus off that something was wrong. Magnus hugged him a little tighter and Alec felt one of his hands gently rub his back. “Is something wrong?” Magnus asked, finally pulling away to look at Alec’s face.
Alec wasn’t crying anymore but when Magnus asked, Alec’s face crumpled. “No, I just-” Alec moved quickly, hoping maybe Magnus wouldn’t see the look on his face. It was obvious Magnus had. “Come inside, let me get your bags.” Alec said, already turning to grab them.
Magnus stepped inside and let Alec grab his bags without a word but Alec could tell by the way that Magnus hovered there that he hadn’t bought Alec’s casual facade.
Alec moved and put his bags inside before closing the door. He faced the doorway for a few moments longer then was probably normal, hoping he could somehow get his expression under control.
“What’s wrong, Alec?” Magnus asked, moving to touch Alec’s back again. Magnus knew Alec loved it when Magnus touched his back.
“People think I cheated on you.” Alec blurted out without turning. “-because of what I was holding in that photo with that girl. They think I’m cheating on you and that I was going to see someone.” His voice was riddled with guilt as he spoke and he sounded like he was on the verge of tears again.
Instantly, Magnus chuckled. It was a soft sound, like he was trying to stifle it and be respectful of Alec’s feelings but it was a chuckle nonetheless. “That’s what you’re all upset about?” He asked, moving forward to wrap his arms completely around Alec’s waist and nuzzle into the side of his neck.
Alec took in a deep shaky breath, almost sighing at the scent of Magnus’ cologne.
“People are always going to assume a lot of things.” Magnus murmured against Alec’s neck. “That’s just what happens when you’re in the public eye. I posted a photo a few months ago and I was wearing red lipstick, so everyone assumed Camille and I were back together.” Magnus pressed a quick abrupt kiss against Alec’s neck. “People assume things all the time. It’s just what happens.”
Magnus pulled away and grabbed Alec’s arm to spin him, so they were facing each other again. “Now, why did that upset you so much?” He asked, moving to kiss Alec on the tip of his nose.
Alec wanted a real kiss but Magnus seemed to want an answer before he’d be willing to give it to him. “I just don’t like people thinking I’d do that to you.” Alec said finally, clutching Magnus’ hand as he looked down to the floor. “I don’t like upsetting the people that like you and support you.”
Magnus hummed and raised an eyebrow. “Would it make you feel better if I posted something and explained you were going to see your sister?”
Slowly, Alec nodded. “I guess so.”
“Okay then.” Magnus smiled like everything was okay again and Alec supposed it almost was. Finally, Magnus moved forward to kiss him and when he pulled away, he pressed his hand against the side of Alec’s face, cupping his smile. “Feel better now?”
Alec nodded, a little embarrassed now that he’d been upset at all.
“Good.” Magnus let go of him and moved to kick off his shoes and shrug off his jacket. “Whatever you made smells heavenly.” He said, instantly moving towards the kitchen.
“I overcooked the chicken.” Alec said, following after him. He was less upset about his poor job cooking of the chicken too. It was just easier to be less upset about stuff when Magnus was around.
“I’m sure it’s far better than what I ate on the plane.” Magnus said, already moving to lift the pan cover and snatch a piece of chicken out of it to put in his mouth. Instantly, he moaned like it was the most heavenly thing he’d ever put in his mouth.
Alec rolled his eyes. He knew it wasn’t that good and it was lukewarm by now anyway. “You’re being dramatic.” He accused him as he moved to heat it up again.
“I’m never dramatic about your cooking.” Magnus responded instantly.
Alec smiled wordlessly, leaving the pan on the stove to warm up as he turned to watch his boyfriend. Magnus moved and settled at the kitchen counter, leaning over on his hands as he stared back at him. “We could eat it cold, you know. I wouldn’t mind.”
Instantly, Alec’s face scrunched up. “I would mind.”
This time, it was Magnus’ turn to roll his eyes.
Alec wasn’t exactly sure why he decided it was okay in that moment. It was like the people on twitter or the food he’d overcooked. When Magnus wasn’t around, it was easy to over think everything until he drove himself insane but when Magnus was there, it was like everything was so much simpler. Everything just felt right.
“I love you.” He said simply, like it hadn’t been an internal struggle for days not to accidentally say it to him.
Magnus blinked. It seemed like it took him a moment to even process what Alec said but when he did, he looked shocked.
It wasn’t really the best time for Alec to say it for the first time. He could have chosen a time that was a little more romantic but it just felt right to say it now and Alec didn’t even regret it. It was true. Why shouldn’t he say it?
“I love you too.” Magnus said finally.
They stared at each other for a long tender moment before Alec smiled. “Good.” He said, nodding to himself as it would cover his stupid happy grin. Alec turned to stir the food so it wouldn’t burn but he knew that behind him, Magnus was grinning too.
“I’ll get the plates.” Magnus said after a moment had passed and then Alec heard him moving to pull the plates out. He didn’t even have to ask where they were. He knew by now.
Alec wondered for a moment how it would work, if they decided to move in together. He wondered if they’d find someplace new. Alec thought his apartment might be a little too small for both of them and Magnus’ penthouse was never really a comfortable space for either of them. It was pre-decorate, very nice and fancy admittedly but nothing like a home. He wondered if Magnus would even want to move in with him and then, he chastised himself.
He shouldn't be thinking about it right now. He didn’t want Magnus to think he was moving too fast.

Yes, This Hairdryer is a Status Symbol - By Madison Wood
After taking a brief inventory of my hairstyling hot tools, I have realized that I own two curling irons, a curling wand, a flatiron, an “air spin brush” (don’t ask, it was on sale), and a hairdryer. SIX hot tools. Like many women, I feel as though as soon as I get really good at using one of these tools, there’s something new and fancy that promises to make my hair perfect (spoiler alert, it never does). And usually, the tool is within a price range that makes the semi-impulse purchase justifiable (think $150 or less).
But this time is different. I’m putting my foot down. I refuse to buy this. Not because I don’t want it (trust me, I REALLY REALLY do), but because it costs $399! Take a look at it…. Absorb it and all it’s crazy, robotic, futuristic glory. What is this witchcraft? But wait, if you really want to be extra, there is a version in 23.75kg gold that costs $449!
Brought to you by Dyson (yes, the vacuum cleaner company), comes the most ludicrously expensive hot tool imaginable, the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer. This tool is quiet, powerful, and engineered to complement all different hair types. There are a lot of articles available describing the mechanics and innovation of the motor… but I would prefer to keep that magic a mystery.
And just went I didn’t think it could be more outrageously pricey (and desirable), Dyson released an expanded hair styling product, the “Dyson Airwrap™” and it collectively broke my brain and the internet.
The Airwrap™ package contains a variety of attachments that straighten, curl, and/or smooth, in addition to drying your hair. Priced even higher than the original Dyson Hair Dryer, the Dyson Airwrap™ costs $549. In spite of that insane price point, within 24 hours of being released, the Dyson Airwrap™ was sold out EVERYWHERE.
How Did Dyson Hair Products Become SO Famous?
1. Really, really good targeted ads
This thing is following me. No matter where I go, no matter the device, browser, platform, I see this monstrosity. Yes, I understand how targeted digital marketing works, and of course, I clear my cookies and browsing data…. but I continue to be haunted by the Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer or Dyson Airwrap™. Dyson is investing A LOT of money in digital advertising, and I can’t lie, it might be working. Let’s be clear, after researching Dyson this blog post, I’ll never ever escape theses ads.
2. Sponsored Articles
Dyson has been sponsoring hair styling articles in popular online publications and blogs such as Refinery29, Hello Giggles, Elle, and InStyle. In these articles, beauty writers and editors offer insights on how to style a variety of hair types. A few article titles include:
This Beauty-Editor-Approved Hair Tool Might Just Change How You Style Your Hair (Refinery29)
If You Have Curls, You'll Love This New Dyson Supersonic Attachment (Refinery29)
How I get my hair to look just like Blake Lively’s (Hello Giggles, via Yahoo)
The Best Hair Dryers to Protect and Volumize Fine Hair (InStyle)
Sometimes it is not immediately apparent that the articles are sponsored or endorsed by specific brands or products, and the publication receives a cut of proceeds resulting from the purchase of products from their site. For example, CNET named the Dyson Airwrap™ one of the 8 best beauty gifts for 2019. It’s important to keep this in mind as we enter the holiday season and every eCommerce site posts its “best gifts” lists (i.e. “Shape Beauty Awards 2019: Best Hair Products” where the Dyson Airwrap™ also appears)… these items do not usually end up on the list by happenstance. Some sites even use sweepstakes, contests, and giveaways as an opportunity to amplify sponsored products and brands. Recently Elle magazine received thousands of contest entries in their recent Dyson Airwrap™ giveaway. All of these impressions come at a cost, and usually, it is not cheap.
I am not saying that there are not honest reviews of the products out there. Often the product is provided to beauty editors to try (for free) in hopes that the trial will result in an appearance in the publication. While the publication still needs to disclose the gift (via FTC standards), their reviews can still be completely trustworthy. An article on The Daily Beast is titled “The Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Really Is As Impressive As It Claims” (link below in sources). Another article on Vice Media draws in readers with the sassy title “The Dyson Hair Dryer Is Totally Worth It, Unless Your Time Is Worth Nothing”. Each of these product reviews praise the Dyson Hair Tool Suite, and seem to be legitimate!
3. Celebs and Influencers
Celebrity and social media influencers alike have become major advocates for the Dyson hair styling suite of products. Of course, we can assume that many of these are sponsored endorsements, but the number of impressions collected through these posts has propelled the Dyson products into the “Must Have” stratosphere as a status symbol of the stars. Jennifer Aniston’s hairstylist styled her hair with the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer for her recent Apple TV+ premiere for “The Morning Show”, a highly publicized event. Aniston’s hairstyle was covered by multiple publications and her hairstylist was very vocal about the Dyson tools in her arsenal.
The celebrity hairstylist, Jen Atkin, (stylist to the Kardashians and has several million Instagram followers) claims that the Dyson Hair Dryer is a “Game Changer”. Atkin is outspoken about her partnership with Dyson and continues to advocate for the product in a variety of high profile ways. (Pictured below with Dyson founder and chief engineer Sir James Dyson)
In her November 2019 spread in Vogue, Tracee Ellis Ross demonstrated how she styles her signature natural curls with the Dyson Hairdryer.
4. Product Placement
The British reality TV show, Love Island, became a worldwide sensation in the past couple of years due to the show being made available for streaming on Hulu. In the first several seasons, contestants used a variety of styling tools to get ready each day; in more recent seasons (especially this past season), contestants each have a Dyson Supersonic hairdryer, which is prominently displayed in several shots each episode. There are 54 episodes per season of Love Island, so if the Dyson dryer was featured a minimum of twice per episode, it will have appeared well over 100 times. Considering Love Island viewership was over 3.3 million for the UK premiere alone… that is a LOT of impressions for the Dyson Hair Styling Suite. [Yes, she’s using a $399 hair dryer to blow dry her eyelashes… ]
In conclusion, I will probably never be able to stomach the price point for either the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer or Airwrap™; however, through a variety of different approaches, Dyson has made their hair tool styling suite into a highly coveted status symbol worldwide.

Chapter 9/?
“Binary code is a series of zeroes and ones strung together in a specific sequence. On paper, it’s useless. Annoying. Worthless. But put that same string of zeroes and ones into a computer, and suddenly it’s a language far more complex than the human mind can comprehend. I was the same way. The world decided I wasn’t good enough in the physical plane, so I went digital. That’s why I chose the name Binary. And you should be very,” He smirks at the underground hero on the screen, “Very afraid of the reach I have here. Aizawa Shouta.”

Hitoshi likes to think of himself as a patient boy. At least he’s shown quite a considerable amount of patients before now. He constantly put up with horrible and frankly degrading foster homes with nary a complaint because he always thought, ‘it could be worse.’ He dealt with the horrors that was public school while having a supposed ‘villain’s’ quirk. Dealt with all the bullying that came with it too. Never complained, never cried. Never showed anything other than silent contempt. It all paid off too when he met Izuku. Now he’s in a better home, aiming to go to online school, and still set in being a hero. He was even very understanding at learning that Izuku was an illegal hacker for the police. He’s finally in a better state of mind and, dare he say it, somewhat happy.
Now he’s sitting on the couch of their apartment, relaxing with a cup of coffee. He convinced Izuku to buy them their own coffee pot since he’s a coffee addict and so is the green haired teen. They’re also saving money on coffee deliveries. Even if that didn’t really matter since Izuku is apparently rich as fuck? He’s still kind of astounded at that. He raises the mug to his lips and takes another sip as the door opens. He swallows the swig of coffee and calls out, “Welcome home.”
“Yeah… I’m home…” Hitoshi’s back straightens into a tense line. He doesn’t turn around though, fearful of what he’ll see. Izuku sounds… odd. Nervous. Afraid? No, not really afraid. But odd all the same. “What happened?” he asks sternly.
“So uh…” Izuku pops up into his vision with a meek smile, “I might have… done something… and I don’t know how you’re going to react.”
“Oh God,” he mutters, burying his nose into his coffee cup, his voice now amplified thanks to it, “What did you do?”
“Wow! Izuku-kun, your place is so nice! Is that the Hitoshi-kun you were talking about? He’s so cute!” The female voice causes Hitoshi’s head to shoot back up. He finally turns his eyes in their direction, coming across - not two - three people including Izuku. The green teen is still grinning in nervousness. There’s also a pale blonde girl with vivid amber eyes smiling coyly at him. Behind the two of them is a very tall man who is hunkered down as if trying to hide behind the others. He’s far taller than Hitoshi so it’s not working.
Hitoshi turns a sharp eye on Izuku, silently demanding an answer. Izuku takes a deep breath in and says in one go, “I didn’t find anything at the store so I just decided to go home and as I was walking I passed an alley that had Himiko-chan and Dabi-kun in it and it turns out that Himiko-chan was hurt and homeless and Dabi-kun is not hurt but is also homeless so I… brought them home?”
Hitoshi blinks, then holds out a hand, “You’re going to have to explain that further.”
___
Izuku was walking down the street, tapping away at his phone. He was a bit disappointed that he didn’t find anything that caught his fancy but it wasn’t a big deal. He could just come back another day. As he passed an alleyway, he heard muffled crying as well as a man’s voice quietly hushing them. He peeked into the alley to see a tall heavily scarred man looking at the bloody knee of a blonde teenage girl. It’s bleeding quite heavily and it seemed like she cut it on a rock or maybe a piece of glass. “It’s okay, Himiko. It’ll be okay,” The man whispered quietly.
“I’m sorry, Dabi-kun. I didn’t mean to get a cut,” she cries, “It really hurts…”
“I know.”
Izuku blinked before he ducked back out and headed to the nearby convenience store. Luckily, it was a bored teen manning the counter so they didn't pay him a mind as he purchased a small first aid kit. He headed back out towards the alley. The two were still there luckily so Izuku approached them calmly, calling out, “Um excuse me.”
The girl flinched as the man turned, holding out a hand as blue flames erupted from it. Izuku squeaked and backed up a step, holding up the first aid kit in front of his face. “I’m sorry,” he said, “I saw you were hurt and thought you could use this first aid kit. I can just set it down and leave.”
The man scowled, “Yeah why don’t you do that-”
“Dabi, be nice!” The girl admonished before she grinned at Izuku, “Thank you so much! You’re so nice! And so cute too!”
“Uh… thanks. So… first aid kit?”
The man, Dabi, glanced between the two before he sighed and held out a hand, now flame free. Izuku approached and gave him the kit. He then crouched to watch as Dabi pulled out various pieces of the kit. He very carefully cleaned the blonde’s knee with some antiseptic. The girl winced but didn’t look away from where Dabi was cleaning the wound. It seemed she was kind of entranced by the wound. A bit odd. Until Izuku caught sight of the fangs that peeked out of her mouth. He gasped in wonder, “You have a blood quirk!”
Both tensed as the girl shuffled her feet nervously, “Yeah… When I consume someone’s blood, I can shift into that person.”
“That’s amazing! Have you ever thought of being a hero with that? You would be awesome! You could be one of the best underground espionage heroes the world has ever seen with that kind of quirk!”
“You think so? But mom and dad said that I’m nothing but a monster. That’s why they said I wasn’t allowed to live with them anymore… That I wasn’t allowed to come home anymore,” Her face was nothing but sad as she said it. Izuku’s heart froze when hearing that. “Your parents threw you out… because of your quirk?” He asked quietly.
She nodded as Dabi stayed quiet and just continued to clean her wound. Izuku turned to the man, “What about you?”
“What about me?” He asked in return.
“Do you have somewhere to go? A family or a home?”
“No,” Dabi said curtly, “Haven’t since I was thirteen. My family thinks I’m dead. I woke up from a three year coma, the hospital released me, and I haven’t gone back home since. I can’t even imagine what my father might say if I even tried.”
Izuku noticed how he spit the word father as if it was a curse. “And how old are you now?”
“... Twenty. Almost twenty-one,” He could tell that Dabi was trying to come across as flippant but his voice was just full of sorrow.
Great. Two people who have been wronged by their parents. Yet again. Izuku huffed out a sigh as Dabi finished up patching the girl’s wound. “Okay, do either of you have anywhere to go?”
Both shook their heads negatively. Izuku quickly packed up and picked up the new first aid kit before he stood up, “Great! C’mon then! You both are coming home with me!”
“Huh?” Dabi asked him. “You two. Are coming home. With me,” He said again slowly.
“Really?” The girl asked next.
“Yep! I’ve already taken in one stray human, what’s two more! Granted it’ll be much easier ensuring Dabi-kun can stay with us than you… Your parents will have to be dealt with but I’ll call Iwai-san as soon as we get home. Also, I’ll need to look for a bigger place for us. Two bedrooms aren’t exactly going to fit four people comfortably. Hopefully Hitoshi won’t mind moving.”
The girl shrieked in happiness and jumped over to him excitedly. Dabi sputtered before he spit out, “Wait, hold on! You can’t just decide that! We can’t just go home with you!”
“Sure you can!” Izuku chirped.
“Wha-? No! We don’t even know you! You don’t even know us! We’re strangers! ” Dabi continued to fight.
“Oh! You’re right!” Izuku pointed to himself with a smile, “I’m Midoriya Izuku! I heard you were Dabi. What’s your name?” Izuku asked the girl.
“Toga Himiko!” She gave without hesitation.
“Himiko, don’t just tell him!” Dabi admonished.
“What? He asked,” she shrugged.
Dabi buried his face into his hands with a groan, “Is no one else seeing any problems with what this kid is saying?”
“No,” Izuku said just as Himiko parrotted her own, “Nope!”
Dabi groaned again. Himiko bounced back over to Dabi and took his hand, “Dabi, it’s okay. I don’t see any other options for us. And Izuku-kun really seems to want to help! Why else would he get a first aid kit to patch me up? I think we should just trust him! As weird as I know that sounds.”
It was quiet for a bit before Dabi sighed again, “Okay, fine. FINE! But if we end up dead or arrested, I blame you!”
Himiko cheered happily, asking Izuku if Hitoshi was as cute as he was. Izuku just smiled and led the way home. For all of them.
___
“And that’s what happened,” Izuku says, finishing up the story.
Hitoshi massages his temples, “That’s… that’s a lot, I’m not going to lie.”
“You aren’t going to make me kick them out are you?”
Hitoshi hunches down at that question. “I mean… You pay the rent and for all our food and stuff. So it’s not like I can viably say, ‘I hate this idea, get rid of them.’”
“Yes you can!” Dabi cries, “Someone else needs to have a bit of common sense besides me! I’m not supposed to be the only responsible one here!”
“But… You’re the adult in the house now?” Izuku tilts his head as if confused.
Dabi’s mind seems to blank at that information. Then his shoulders drop as he moans, “Oh fuck, I am aren’t I?”
Izuku and Himiko both laugh at that. Hitoshi can’t help but smile at how well they get along. Then he sighs, “Okay, so I guess this is a thing now. What do we need to do first?”
“First things first, send a message to Iwai-san about a new case for Himiko to get out of her horrible parents’ custody! CATRA, get on it!” He pointed at the computer screens in the living room. The green cat avatar appeared with a small purr of a greeting, “Understood Izuku-kun! Welcome home to you two as well, Dabi-kun and Himiko-chan!”
“Ooo! Kitty!” Himiko shrieks happily, running over to watch CATRA.
“Indeed! Meanwhile, I-” Izuku points to himself dramatically, “Will start looking for bigger accommodations for us. I’m thinking maybe four or five rooms. I wonder if they’d let me buy a house. Maybe I could put it under Dabi’s name?” Izuku moves over to the couch, taking a seat on it and grabbing his keyboard. He then zones out to the rest of them as he gets to work on his assigned task.
“How is he even thinking of paying for all that?” Dabi asks incredulously.
“Izuku’s secretly rich,” Hitoshi says but doesn’t clarify any further than that. Just leaves to go start packing his meager amount of things. Knowing Izuku, they’d have a new place by the end of the day.
“What does that mean?” Dabi sounds almost fearful before following after him, calling out again, “Wait! What does that mean?!”
Hitoshi smirks. Maybe this could be fun. Like teasing an older brother.

jungkook; my online sweetheart
❝ who would’ve known that jungkook would fall in love with someone online? and what more when he falls harder when he meets them in person? ►5816 words // scenario, onlinefriends!au, prompt-based ♡ it feels weird writing a scenario after so long but it feels nice being able to write scenarios again! i hope you guys like it! ;w;
Jungkook was a firm believer that one day, everything on the internet could save the world. Then he comes across someone who’s telling him he either has a point or he has his head shoved up in his ass to think such a thing. The conversation sparks off from there, an anonymous chatroom server made for people to ramble on their thoughts and Jungkook finds himself immersed to… ‘therealunknown’. Strange, weird… just the way I like it, Jungkook smirks.
His fingers move to reply whoever who said that to him, that ‘you’re either smart enough to say that or you’re smart enough to think you’re smart enough to say that’.
Jungkook, or, Jeon97, hits send.
jeon97 [9.31PM]: what? you don’t think the world could be solved with the things on the internet?
therealunknown is typing…
Jungkook waits by the edge of his seat, folded arms in front of the screen as he waits for the three dots hopping turns to stop and dings to a reply for him.
therealunknown [9.32PM]: i mean, there’s just certain things you can’t get on the internet like you do in real life.
Without missing a beat, Jungkook jumps on the bandwagon of curiosity, and partial debate.
jeon97 [9.34PM]: like what??
Jungkook laughs the same time a new text line appears and he’s never sent a friend request so fast in his life.
therealunknown [9.35PM]: pardon my language but pizza and mother fucking fried chicken, my dude.
//
Minutes of waiting by his phone spans out to the hours he’d laugh the more he gets to know of… therealunknown. And when days pass by with familiarity greeting his screen, it soon morphs into a name he can paint the person who somehow connects with him beyond the digital spectrum. How his heart is more than willing to open up to someone thousands of miles away than people he sees every day. Or how his mind is able to tell him that this person who’s replying him as of now, isn’t possibly a serial killer.
When those gathered days turns into months of brutal and honest banter back and forth on how he still is wrong on the first statement he’s said on the first day or how he tells what the unknown claims to be that pizza and chicken isn’t a valid meal unless you want to die early, Jungkook introduces himself as Jungkook and therealunknown… has a name and that is - “Y/N, what’s taking you so long? Stop fixing your bra and just get your damned tea,” Jungkook’s more than just impatient, even tapping his microphone because he knows that makes it echo on the other end that accompanies with your why I oughta!
Crinkled eyes of happiness with a gummy grin is displayed on your screen, past your irritated expression with the rolling of your eyes. Jungkook remains smiling, resting his chin on his arms crossed in front of his screen as he watches you settle down to get comfortable. When you have your cup of tea in possession, warmth pressed to your palms, Jungkook drinks in your smile as you look at his camera window, where his smile illuminates your room.
“How was your day?”
Much more better now, Jungkook chuckles, watching as the crescents in your eyes accompanies the full moon blooming in his heart but chooses to answer with: “Eh, could’ve been worse.”
//
Months gathers in the hands of someone who just wants to be in the present moment with you and Jungkook feels the exact same. Sure, being connected spiritually is ounces better than just a person who’s just existing with you. But there’s just things that you can’t solve with the internet and this is your point why since day one, Jeon Jungkook.
Said person sighs when he sees you frowning, continuously tapping on your webcam so it makes a thudding sound into his ears.
“What’s wrong, Y/N?”
On any other day, you’d joke about it and poke fun at your own feelings. Today, you’re laying them out flat for Jungkook to feel and he doesn’t know if he’s grateful to know you’re feeling that way or if he feels attacked at how raw and personal your confession is to his own beating like a reminder he’s so far away from you.
“You not being here,”
Jungkook frowns when he sees it on your face and he’s threatened to beat up many, many people who happens to be the cause of it but he would’ve never imagined he would be one of them. He argues in his mind if he should make a joke about banging his face against the wall or doing a somersault in a pool of jello but decides to stay quiet when the both of you let your feelings consume the best of you.
It sucked being able to connect with someone so well despite the distance barrier and it was a bittersweet feeling that clung to your gut with one day, just… not today. But Jungkook wouldn’t have found you intriguing if you let it end on such note. He sits up when he sees a spark of idea flashes in your eyes, displayed in the eagerness of how you put your tea away to straighten your back and stare at him.
“Hey Jeon,”
“Hm?”
“Your break is coming soon, right?”
He laughs first, “Yeah? I mean, a reminder that my finals is literally tomorrow Y/N and I’m here talking to you so what the fuck?”
You roll your eyes, waving a hand to dismiss the fact that he might fail but that usually never happens.
“Shut up and let me get to my point,”
“You’ll literally get everything if I actually shut up,”
You’re grabbing onto your laptop and giving it a shake and it’s scary that Jungkook feels his heart doing the same. He bites down his smile, eyes unable to hide the fact he’s trying not to smile, “Jeon shut the fuck up and let me speak,”
He snorts, but relents as he lets you say your piece.
Throughout your whole rambling that garners into a solid fool-proof plan of him being able to finally see you, Jungkook gets lost in your enthusiasm and the energy that he feeds off on. His mind goes blank when you ask him what do you think? Gulping, he shifts a little and tries to save his ass but he can’t when you call him out on spacing out and not listening to what you’ve been talking on about. Yet, you don’t get mad.
You show the opposite that strums with his heartstrings he wishes to play them loud and clear for you to hear. He clears his throat and shakes his head when you ask if something’s bothering him. He can’t help but laugh when you roll the sleeves of your hoodie, asking whoever who made him feel this way to square up hoe, I’m more than capable to turn your ass into a McWhopper. When it all dies away with the agreement to make that plan into a reality, half of Jungkook is ecstatic.
The other half, not quite.
But Jungkook still smiles and agrees.
//
“So, you finally meeting your online sweetheart?” Taehyung comes on one end, Jimin coming around the other, ruffling the younger’s hair, “Yeah, shouldn’t you be excited?”
“Piss off…” Jungkook mutters under his breath, holding his phone close to his chest. The two refuse to give up, peering over the younger’s shoulder and proceeds to laugh quietly, letting him have his moment to reply. When he clearly looks more confused than he usually does on a daily basis, ranking up more to when he comes across a maths equation, they decide to step in again.
“You sure you don’t want to talk about it?” Jimin gently pokes Jungkook’s calf with his foot and Taehyung swipes his fingertips on Jungkook’s thigh to mimic the same effect.
Jungkook slides down the sofa until his body meets the floor and his head is the only thing resting on the seat of the sofa, his eyes still glued to the screen as he heaves a deep sigh.
“I don’t know what to do,”
Jimin and Taehyung exchange glances before coming to the centre, staring at Jungkook’s phone. It displays his flight time and destination, which is the same country they’ve heard where you’ll be (plus, they’ve met you a couple of times when they crash Jungkook’s place and he refuses to give up his skype sessions with you just because they come over, thus, it leads to Jungkook fighting to the death to get your attention). Then a ding signals a message from you that make Jimin and Taehyung repel away to make it seem like they haven’t been buzzing around like busybodies.
Jungkook knows better of them than he knows himself, groaning and threatening to throw his phone across the room.
“Hyung…!”
Taehyung pokes Jimin’s arm.
“You’re the oldest,”
Jimin scoffs.
“Your name consists of half of what he just said,”
“You suck so much on a different level,”
“You suck period,”
“Hyung,” Jungkook is now facing the both of them, hunching over the sofa with his arms stretched out until it meets the back of the cushions. The two older ones take a glance at Jungkook’s phone, which now shows what he’s been going on about in a mental battle on his own.
Y/N: i can’t wait to see you ajskdhkdfhsodijsdfksdf
Y/N: i can finally put you in a headlock and make you buy me food 😗
Jimin thumps the back of Taehyung’s head.
“Say something,”
Taehyung smacks Jimin’s arm, “You say something!”
“What do I say?” Jungkook whines, burying his face in the sofa. When the two of them decide to drop their facade to help this helpless… pup, Jimin’s the first one taking the step towards actually trying.
“Well… what’s the problem?”
“The problem is,” Jungkook lifts his head up, chin digging into the cushion as he hopelessly reads your text over and over again to admit that - “I like her,”
“Well I can only imagine what it would be like if you didn’t and you still bought a plane ticket to see her,”
Jimin and Jungkook on cue, synchronize to look at Taehyung, who now wants to throw himself out the nearest window.
“Sorry, too soon?”
Jungkook ignores him, only looking at Jimin.
“Well, shouldn’t you be happy, then? You’re finally meeting someone you’ve been liking for so long,”
“That’s the problem,” Jungkook huffs, letting go of his phone, “I don’t think I should be…”
Taehyung tries to redeem himself, pushing forward to question: “Why shouldn’t you?”
Jungkook’s mouth opens and closes, trying to explain his reasoning but felt like he can’t lift the weight of his shoulders now. When his phone vibrates to a call from you, he refuses to answer… any of them as he grabs his phone and heads to his room to talk to you privately.
Jimin’s about to get up and talk some sense into the kid, only for the other kid to grab onto Jimin, tug him down to make use of Jungkook’s game console.
“Not our business,” Taehyung then passes Jimin a controller, “Stay out of it.”
//
have you ever thought what if we meet and we actually hate each other?
Jungkook hesitates on pressing send, but in the midst of thinking on whether he should, his thumb refuses to listen to what he has to say before he realizes it - “Shit,”
He can now only wait for a reply, cuddled up in his blanket as he leans to his side. His phone screen is the only source of light in the dark of his room. His breathing pattern stutters when he sees Y/N is typing…
Clearing his throat, he expects the worst, like well then, maybe we weren’t meant to be friends or that sucks, lol. But what appears are the words that make his heart flutter.
Y/N: at least you’re good looking 😛
Somehow you always reel him back to what he intends to say, his finger tapping on the emoji button to reply you with: ‘🙄’.
Y/N: HAHAHA i’m kidding jeez
Y/N: i doubt it, really
Y/N: i mean you saw me crying because i dropped my hotdog when i facetimed you walking to class and it was hilarious to see you trying to keep a straight face talking about your deepest fears so
Y/N: at this point we’re married without each other knowing
Y/N: and it other words i mean we’ll be fine
Y/N: did i help or did i fuck it up even more lol
While Jungkook feels part of the weight being lifted off, it seems to have sunk down even more. It was a weird feeling to describe, but he just… can’t. Instead he shuts it out and decides to sleep on it, only after replying you to make sure you’re not on the other side worrying.
it helped a lot Y/N. goodnight. sweet dreams. 😌
Remember when Jungkook had half of him being happy now that he’s able to see you and the other half remained unknown? Well… linking back to what the unknown on the first day, that’s exactly what it is. The unknown was you and when it became known, Jungkook wishes he didn’t know that he was capable to develop feelings for someone he didn’t know he should be. When all he sees are hearts being sent as a reply, he sets his phone off to his nightstand. It eases him to sleep… but also keeps him awake.
//
D-Day arrives when Jungkook steps out of the airplane and he’s walking out of the terminal with him hoping he left his heart behind because he doesn’t have time for this shit. This shit being how it beats way too fucking fast for his liking when he knows for a fact that the whole world could hear it thrashing from left to right, out of his chest and he wants to grab it and swallow it down. Nervousness tips his fingers as he taps them against his thigh, his other gripping onto his bag as he waits by the side.
Then his phone vibrates and he pulls it out to let his smile fade.
Y/N: my dude
Y/N: i think
Y/N: i see you
If ever Jungkook dies from a horror movie, these exact three texts would be the reason why. His breath gets stuck in his throat, unwilling to push down into his lungs to breathe when his lungs have that sole purpose to be in his body. He tightens his grip onto his suitcase, managing to type with one hand.
i swear to god, y/n. i’m going to kick your ass when i see you
where the hell are you??
He doesn’t know if his mind is cruel enough to let him picture your smile or if it’s trying to calm him down by ringing your laugh in his head. He unintentionally smiles at that one time you tripped over the cable cord and flat out fell to the ground, only to laugh your butt off and Jungkook remembers how hard it was to stop laughing that night. But reality comes smacking Jungkook in the face when he realizes it’s… not in his figment of memory.
It confirms with two taps on his shoulder and Jungkook is finally afraid of one thing more besides the fact that the existence of fried chicken could come to an end. He robotically turns around and gapes at the presence of someone that fills up his lonely nights and the screen of his computer and phone, to a real life human being standing before him.
And they’re fucking beautiful.
Way more beautiful than Jungkook had imagined past sleepless nights and insomnia sweeping him in the arms of the moonlight of possibilities of what if’s. Jungkook swallows and shoves his phone away before he drops it, blinking a couple of times to make sure this isn’t a dream. But his body confirms it with the hours of flight draining his body, with the surge of newfound energy in the irises of your eyes.
“Hi, Jungkook,”
He doesn’t know if it’s because it’s so surreal that you’re standing here before him that he has to reach out and poke your forehead. The weird thing about is that you actually allow it and laugh at the look of disbelief on his face. As if he expects you to disperse with the wind at a single touch. When Jungkook let’s this moment sink into his bones, he unknowingly mumbles well fuck me dude when you don’t. He leans back with a deep exhale, still surprised you’re actually here.
You’re making it far worse with laughing, his heart threatening to fly out of his ribcage at the allowance to hearing your voice when he fell asleep to it merely nights before.
“Is this usually how you greet someone or is it just me?”
Jungkook is amazed at how he’s able to answer despite his tongue turning numb.
“J-Just you,” With a nervous chuckle, of course.
“Well I’m very flattered, then,” Your put your hand out with a smile tipping up Jungkook’s very own, “I’m Y/N,”
For a split moment, Jungkook thinks he actually forgot what his name was. Unable to reply fast enough to make it look like he didn’t forget, he intends to say his name but messes up with, “I-I’m know,”
Your hand slips into his for a firm shake, and you not only make Jungkook’s heart fly to the heaven’s but drop back to earth with: “Nice to meet you, Know. Do you know where Jungkook is?”
“I swear to god, and I swear it true, I can finally kick your ass in person,”
Snickering, you let go of his hand and spread your arms out. He looks confused, but understands what you mean when you point to yourself like it’s a silent note of hug me you idiot. Jungkook gulps and feels his whole body freezing when all he wants to do is enter your embrace. Guilt hangs on his shoulders when he knows he won’t hug you with the same mentality you do for him but it ebbs away when your face morphs into one he’s seen when you get pouty.
“C’mon, I can’t possibly steal all your organs with a hug,”
He manages to laugh, shaking his head with folded arms, “What makes you think I can’t?”
“Oh? So you waited two years before you can finally steal my organs? Your buyer must be cursing you in hell, dude,”
Jungkook shakes his head at the reminder of why he’s friends with you in the first place. Being on the same wavelength with the humor that matches to not label the two of you as scums of the earth for such darkness to joke on, Jungkook unfolds his arms when you wiggle your fingers, grinning at him.
“It’s just one hug, Mr. Know. What’s it gonna hurt?”
He’s about to joke on something, but he’s certain it’s not the right time or place for it. Instead, he steps forward and closes the distance to put his arms around you. He can feel your smile breathing out onto his skin when your face presses to his chest. He rests his chin on top of your head, past nights of imagining doing it and he squeezes you tight.
“It’s Mr. Jeon, stupid,”
“I know, Mr. Know,”
You can hear him smiling, even if he wants to sound offended.
“I’m going to kick your ass now,”
“And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
//
The other ways come to when Jungkook’s able to be a part of your daily life. Of course, only after he confirms to Taehyung and Jimin that I’m alive, don’t worry and he doesn’t bother replying them of the details apart from the fact that if he doesn’t reply by the end of the day, send help. But that doesn’t reach to that point when Jungkook trusts that he’s in safe hands when he admits that he’s doing what you’re doing too.
So, as it turns out, the both of you click off much more better than he had imagined. Picturing the scenario of an awkward silence where none of you are able to talk, it turns out the two of you can’t stop. To being told to keep it down when you’re far too noisy in the coffeeshop he’s seen as a backdrop to your calls on most of your Wednesdays, to sitting at a park bench to talk to your hearts content and making fun of each other for possibly making the baby from a distance cry.
It progresses further to walking down the sidewalk and living in the moment together. Eating from the same hotdog stand he saw you dropping yours in front of in camera and he still remembers how you almost cried. To you sharing one of the places you find solace that Jungkook appreciates you allowing him to be in with you. On top of the rooftop where the two of you sit and appreciate the night view, Jungkook can’t believe this is truly happening… and that it could disappear as soon as he blinks his eyes.
So he turns and faces you, watching your side profile as you then lean towards the side and rest your head against his shoulder. His heart elevates with the weight that he still carries around and guilt, pounding his chest as he watches you get comfortable with him. Pushing his feelings aside once more, Jungkook closes his eyes and moves his head to rest on yours, just indulging in the present and muting out the voices in his head at the sounds of your breathing.
It went further to the point where he takes a visit to the club that you still manage to send photos when you’re down on a Friday night. Then to eating breakfast at a diner he’s seen many Snaptchat stories of, including that one time you spilt your chocolate milkshake and you deem yourself to be the unluckiest person in the world and he promises you he’ll buy you one. There, now, here, he manages to keep that promise. It became a collection of memories, bitesized pieces to the whole firsts together locked in your camera rolls. Jungkook hasn’t left anywhere without his camera, refusing to let go of it to document everything and anything.
Everything moves by like a slow motion film, filtered like in the 80′s because he feels like that’s when true love seems to blossom into his life on the movie screen and he remembers feeling his heart flutter the same as when he first digested the meaning of love.
He’s unable to let it process that all of this could possibly come to an end when he leaves and he’ll have to accept the fact that all this while, he hasn’t been truthful with you. It bites the back of his mind even when he’s sleeping in your sofa at night. He went so far to let himself be vulnerable around you, down to the core to admit the things that keeps him up at night except for one, the one he’s talking to.
Which is why one day before his flight departs back to where he came from, he sits quietly in one of your beanbags. Sinking in, he watches as you get ready to leave for a quick meet up with a friend who desperately needs you to return something and he - by all means - understands. He bids you goodbye and promises he’ll be here without making much of a mess when you return… only to keep half of the promise.
Well, he did create a small tornado recreation in your living room but he cleaned everything up.
Leaving a letter and a purchased ticket back home a day earlier.
//
“Jeon! I’m back! We can finally go watch that Star Wars movie you’ve been mumbling in your sleep about!”
You close the door behind you, weirded out when everything is spotless.
“Jeon?” You’re entering your own home, yet, it doesn’t feel like it’s yours anymore. Something about it is different. For one, it’s all spotless. Except the note that is left on your sofa. Picking it up, you glance around to note that Jungkook’s bags are gone and it’s hard to put the pieces of where he could’ve gone.
Doing what any reasonable person would, you unfold the letter to read it.
‘Y/N… I’m a dick. I’ll say that first before you do so that when you get mad, at least you know that I thought of myself the same. I’m leaving a day early, I bought my ticket already. Here’s the money for what you paid on my ticket back tomorrow.
Now you’re wondering why I’m doing this but… I’ve been feeling guilty all this while. And I can’t bring myself to tell you about it and I didn’t want you to worry if you actually knew so please, don’t worry about it. I’ll let you know when I reach back home. Thank you for giving me such a great time and being so welcoming throughout these few days. Plus, I can’t bear to see you cry. You look ugly when you cry. So don’t.
Love you.
Jeon.’
The next, you’re out of the door with the letter in your hands, money forgotten on the floor when that’s the last thing on your mind.
//
Jungkook inhales and exhales as he stares at the trees in front of him sway like there’s nothing in the world to bother them. Apart from the exhaust fumes slowly killing them because honestly, same. Jungkook goes through his camera pictures and hates how that every single one of them makes him smile, because they all have you in them. Even when you’re not physically in them, it all reminds him of you and it makes his heart race like they ran across the whole globe just to experience this. His fingers linger the delete button, that haunts him to erase everything like his feelings but fails to do so when his phone rings.
He switches his camera off and sets it to the side, pulling out his phone where his eyes widen at the caller ID.
Right, he’s still in the vicinity of being able to be contacted. Your name flashes on the screen and his thumb hovers over declining the call. Before he can do so, or make the choice, the voice that echoes far from his mind snaps him to look over his shoulder.
“You better not have declined my call or I’m going to kick your ass, Jeon,”
Jungkook faces forward and blinks hard, wishing that this is just a part of his mind playing cruel jokes on himself but when he feels a smack at the back of his head, he stands and turns around, coming face to face with something much more cruel than his imagination. Here you stand in front of him, with a piece of paper he poured his emotions out onto in his own handwriting and Jungkook bites the inside of his cheek.
“What the hell is this? Why are you leaving a day early? What are you so afraid of telling me that it could be worse than that time you kicked a kid into a swimming pool?”
Jungkook snorts.
“You’re not supposed to laugh! This is serious!”
You walk around the bench to get to where he is and you grab him by the collar to make him face you. It might look amusing to the people who has no context whatsoever to the situation but you’re fuming. You lift up the note and wave it in front of his face, before he locks eyes with you, hands fiddling by his sides.
“Answer me. What’s going on? Or what did I do that made you do what you did? Was it something I said or-”
“It’s none of that,” Jungkook carefully answers, gently reaching out to peel the note from your hands and you watch him… uncertain. It’s bugging you that he still doesn’t choose to answer but at the very least, he seems like he’s about to open up to answer you. Quietly, you wait for an answer and it appears to be coming. Slowly. Like the ripples from the water slowly revealing to be the waves crashing to shore.
He rereads the note he’s written to you, as if it didn’t take up all the ounce of courage he has to write it into words for you to understand yet… not, at the same time. He folds the letter and uses it as a tool to get rid of his nervousness, but it’s not working when the tapping of your feet seems to taunt the metronome in his heart moving too fast for it to be in the right pace. He pushes down the anxiety bubbling up, deciding to just get it done and over with.
After all, if it all goes wrong, he’s alone here in the park with you and he’ll be leaving later in the evening.
Let’s just… get it done.
Jungkook forces his lungs to take in some air, brewing the words hanging at the tip of his tongue to exhale out the syllables that rock against your chest.
“I like you, Y/N,” Jungkook hangs his head low, as if he’s ashamed to admit that, “Very much.” He can tell you’re confused, based on how you let out a sound that tells him so. So he tells you why. “Because it feels wrong. I feel like I haven’t been truthful with you about this when I should have and I wasn’t sure how you would feel about this so I didn’t tell you about it,”
Jungkook feels his heart crumbling when his body betrays him, the tears pooling in his eyes like the emotions he’s pouring out to his feet. He sniffs, trying to suck them back in because bitch, not now, don’t you fucking dare I’m almost done. He lets out a shaky breath and crushes the note, trying to destroy something to boost his strength.
“And I felt so guilty because we tell each other everything and yet I couldn’t tell you this. I didn’t want you to feel obligated to feel the same so I thought…” Jungkook finally has the balls to look at you past the blurriness of his sight. Hotness streams down his cheeks when he blinks his feelings away, trying to think of a joke to fill in the void between the pair of you but before he can do so, all air is lunged out of his chest when… when…
Jungkook grows wide eyed when he sees you so up close, lips buzzing with his feelings combusting into his wishes coming to life. It happens again when your hands cup his cheeks, pulling him down to meet with your lips halfway and Jungkook’s hands are trembling as they meet with your waist. You encourage him to do it, one of your hands slipping from his face to overlap with one of his by your side and he grips onto you tight. His arms slide over, banding your waist as if you’re going to disappear like his hopes and he kisses you hard. He kisses you with the nights that keeps him awake when your smile replaces the moon in the sky. He kisses you like you’re the only thing that matters to him and he kisses you, you and only you.
And only you push him back but not too much so you can glare at him.
“I’m mad at you, by the way,”
Jungkook’s mouth hangs open.
“W-What?”
“I’ll admit, it’s scary to be in your position but what about me? You were going to leave just like that?”
Jungkook tightens his hold on you, frowning with the creases lining his forehead.
“I was scared! What if you didn’t feel the same or-”
“I do! Why else did you think I even allowed you to sleep on my sofa? I’ll have you know, that’s my favorite sofa,”
He laughs, a bit too hard for your liking that it makes you snap. Because it makes you smile.
“That’s your only sofa, Y/N,”
“Same thing!”
The two of you are still on the shallow ends of revealing to one another your true feelings. So to make up for Jungkook’s courage, you return it with your arms around his neck and a peck to his lips, for your own to whisper on them after: “I like you, Jungkook,”
Jungkook’s smiling so wide his cheeks are starting to hurt. But what hurts even more is that you’re so pretty it’s actually painful. He rests his forehead against yours and his grip is iron-like, unwilling to let go as he sways the pair of you from left to right like two infatuated hearts linking together closer than before across thousands of miles apart.
Now too close to even break away.
“You’re a beautiful person, Y/N.”
Jungkook seals it with a kiss the same time you understand what he means. In the moment, all you can feel his feelings being portrayed against your lips but at the back of your mind, the meaning of his words make your heart swell.
“Instead of saying I like you to someone I like, I’ll tell them they’re beautiful,”
You find it amusing, but it is interesting. Because you out of all people would’ve thought he would resort to just saying: “Hey, I like your face. Let’s date,” but it seems to be the opposite here. More refined than you had imagined. Leaning forward, closer to your computer, you question: “Why?”
“Because, I don’t want to tell them that I like them as it is. I want them to know that I think that they’re beautiful person inside out. That I like them beyond the surface. It’s like, I like you but… I like the fact that you’re a beautiful person on your own and I like you,”
“That sounds like bullshit. Romantic bullshit,”
“Eh, someday, someone’s going to love this romantic bullshit.”
Who would’ve known that it would’ve been you?
((”jeon,” you’re trying to talk to him, but he whines and complains that he’s not done kissing you yet and you tell him he can kiss you all he wants only after you make one thing clear. he stops and huffs, loosening his arms around you ever so slightly and he sits up a little on the sofa and raises his brow.
“what is it?”
“i’m cancelling your flight,”
jungkook didn’t know he can smile harder than this.
“i wouldn’t have it any other way.”))

Chapter 5: Wednesday, May 15th, late afternoon.
[MAY 15 – 4:41PM]
(Anna, Missy meet at bookstore)
Missy was so just ready for this day to be over. She was tired of picking up the same books over and over again. Why can’t customers just put books back if they aren’t going to buy them? she thought.
“Ugh, why can’t customers just put books back if they aren’t going to buy them?!” She said out loud letting her frustration boil over.
Well, I mean, unless they were cute boys, that is—Cute boys could leave books out all they liked, and she would gladly come pick those up. Like, oh I don’t know, that red haired boy from Texas she spoke to earlier. Or maybe he was from Louisiana. It was definitely somewhere South. Oh, those Southern tall ones. Red hair was good. She preferred a surfer boy cut with wavy hair. Or curly hair. But there wasn’t anything wrong with a good old-fashioned clean-cut military look.
Actually, she was completely fine with a disheveled look too and very closely trimmed beard. Really as long as he has hair he’ll do. Although… There wasn’t anything wrong with a manly receding hairline either, or clean shaven all together with a fit body. Even if he was losing his hair, as long as he didn’t do something weird with it like a ponytail. Just, eww, no. Then again, did he have cute facial hair? She’d have to see him first to judge him based on his overall style. Maybe he was a sharp dresser? There’s a lot to judging men based on their physical appearance. Or perhaps he was clever? Oh, but those red heads from the South. Those were always top of the list.
She finished straightening several books on a shelf in the Pets section and rounded the end cap on her way back to the kiosk at the center of the store.
***
Anna pulled into the parking lot. The usual post work rush made it annoyingly difficult to find a parking spot. It’s a bookstore she thought… who reads anymore? What are all these people doing here! “GO HOME!” she growled under her breath at a cute elderly couple crossing in front of her. She immediately regretted it. Afterall, they were cute. More importantly, they were a couple. Sigh. Next came a lady and her three kids. Anna shook her head. What a handful! I don’t think I’m ready for that. Nope. Not yet. Love, sure, marriage, obvs, baby carriage? Nope. Hells nope.
There was another handful, this time of cars doing the parking lot dance in front of her. She inched her way into the chaotic back-ing and forth-ing and turning and lurching. She attempted to mimic the choreography as best she could as she joined the drive-in dancing with the cars. Finally, she saw a break in the dance circle and made a bolt for an open spot.
***
“Hello and welcome to Leaf Street Books!” Missy pounced on customers left and right as they entered the bookstore. “Hi!!! Welcome!” She was good at what she did. “Hello! Welcome to Leaf Street Books!!!” Even if her major was in something completely unrelated to selling books. “Hey!!! Leaf Street welcomes you! Did you come for books? Because we’ve got those!” Accounting was ok for a while, but she just got burnt out. “Welcome to the bookstore!” Sure, the money was REALLY good. Much better than a lowly retail worker at a failing bookstore made. “Leaf Street Books! You’ve got the looks; we’ve got the books!” But as she found out firsthand from the accounting gig, money can’t make you happy. “Welcome!” It sounds silly but greeting people at a bookstore made her much happier—at least for the time being.
“Hi.” Anna said in a rushed manner. She hurried by Missy still in defense mode from the parking scramble.
“Can I help you find something?” Missy attempted to make eye contact with the new customer. Who was this? A completely new customer she’d never seen before. There was something about her… She was a digital book reader fanatic. Missy could tell—an online order only, set it and forget it subscription shopper. But… she wasn’t here for herself, she never physically goes into a bookstore, she just clicks download on her e-reader device.
“No, I’m fine thanks.” Anna continued on her way at a hurried pace, purposely not allowing any further eye contact with the bookstore worker.
She made her way to the very back of the bookstore. Along the half-minute journey, she had a new friend from the front of the store curiously watching her every move. Missy hated being dodged. She hated it when customers knew exactly what they wanted and where it was.
***
Missy stalked from afar as her elusive customer walked out of the kids books section clutching a stiff cardboard book with a green worm on the front. Her tall and slender frame allowed her to look out across the store like a lighthouse with perfectly primped blonde hair. As the young woman made her way near the front of the store she recognized the book as “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. The woman was nearing Missy once again. Missy was only about ten feet away with herself perfectly positioned between the young lady and the beginning of the check-out line. A goalie between the goal and the approaching offence. Gotcha… no other way for her to go. Missy decided to pounce again—
"Some interesting reading you got there!" She said in a delightful voice.
"It’s not for me." Anna replied, irritated.
A response! Eeeek!!! Missy knew she was in. If she could get a response, she’d be able to get her way. A response was all it took.
“Let me guess—“She usually almost always guessed absolutely wrong. See, guessing wrong would often cause the person to tell you all about their decision to purchase the item. She would immediately memorize everything they said and jot it all down after the conversation. Some time later, she would then submit the information to her boss so that they could have a better idea of who bought what and why. It was the worst way to collect information. But, hey, if her boss wanted her to do it and she got paid to do it… she didn’t care either way. The guessing game was much more effective than going up to people and asking why they were buying what they had in their hand. You just looked nosy doing that. Plus, this was more fun!
“—It’s a book for your niece!”
Anna narrowed her eyes. “How did you know that?”
“Oh, umm, lucky guess… I guess?” Missy was caught off guard. Missy is never caught off guard. Missy doesn’t like being caught off guard. On guard!
Anna stopped in her tracks and looked suspiciously at the woman in front of her. They were probably somewhere around the same age.
“Would you like it gift wrapped?” Missy asked, nervously, pointing to the book Anna held in her hands. She was almost certain it wasn’t a gift for a niece, how on earth did she get that right? Something wasn’t quite right. Or maybe this was a sign, this was exactly right! It was one of the two!
“Isn’t that a holiday thing?” Anna asked, staring down the blonde in front of her. “We’re in the middle of May.”
“Oh! No, no, we do it year around. All you have to do is ask.” Missy smiled, her smile had a slight hint of deviousness about it, like she was about to get her way, it was her anticipation smile. She loved getting her way, especially when someone wasn’t initially going her way.
Great, another thing to waste my money on Anna thought. “How much does it cost?”
“It’s free!” Missy bounced excitedly as the words shot out from her mouth.
“Well, if it’s free, I mean, why not?” Anna shrugged. Then looked at her super geeky tech watch she had recently and unapologetically splurged on—she needed it for running, stop judging her! Sometimes you just have to splurge even if you’re nearly broke! Anna noted the time on her watch, she had a little bit of extra time, so, why not? She nodded yes to the bookstore employee.
Missy strutted up to Anna and placed her hands out in front with her palms facing up. She didn’t utter a single word, only waited for the slightly startled twentysomething staring back to get the hint—she didn’t. Missy wiggled her fingers without moving her hands. Anna furrowed her brow. “Well, are you going to hand me the book or what?” Missy huffed.
“Oh! Yes. Sorry. I’m sorry, my mind must be elsewhere at the moment.” Anna said. She handed the book over nearly dropping it in the process.
“Follow me.” Missy purred, giddy with excitement.
The two of them walked up to the front register where Anna extracted a debit card from her purse to pay for the book then they walked over to a small kiosk in the middle of the store.
This was Missy’s home base. She had more than meets the eye hidden on several shelves just out of view from the customer. Missy had been known to console teary-eyed customers on the spot with a comforting tissue, or a touch of eyeliner to a fellow female friend in need, or male friend, who was she to judge. Eyeliner for all! There was the usual safety pin for a broken article of clothing, or a complete eyeglass screw set to repair a dropped pair of glasses, and when that didn’t work, she had an assortment of tapes and various adhesives. One time she actually produced an engagement ring from her box of jewelry for an impromptu on the spot proposal in the Parenting and Family section. She also happened to have an old and somewhat fussy still working Polaroid camera to document the event. Her words of “Congratulations! I say just embrace the mistake, the little guy inside will thank you later for sticking it out and being there for him!” caused quite the uproar. She then produced a pregnancy test from one of her mid-level kiosk drawers to calm the nerves of the young man who had just proposed. Missy learned that moment it’s best not to make any conclusions without first asking all the facts; she forgot it about an hour later. It was probably due to the nice buzz she had going on from the bottle of champagne and glasses she pulled from a secret bottom shelf drawer to share with the newly engaged, kid-free, bookstore couple.
She is the Marry Poppins of the bookstore. That kiosk is her magic bag filled with an unlimited supply of knick-knacks and fixes.
Anna and Missy chatted idly as various gift-wrapping items materialized from behind the kiosk and sprawled out on the countertop. Anna began to reveal the information her mind was withholding, playing cards placed on a table one card at a time. The more words Anna assembled for Missy the slower the gift-wrapping items assembled themselves. Eventually they stopped entirely as Missy began to dispense advice after she pushed the half-wrapped book aside. She reached behind the kiosk countertop and pulled out a small makeup kit and various perfumes.
Missy touched up a bit of Anna’s makeup here and there.
“ …and lets do something about that hair shall we?” Missy continued.
“Wow, thanks.” Anna replied in complete surprise at what was happening.
Anna was now feeling almost completely at ease about her blind date that Jenna decided to set her up on. Why she agreed to this was beyond her. It was more for Jenna than herself. She didn’t want to let her friend down. She was sure it would be yet another dud. All duds, no studs. Ba-dum-tsss. I really am a total catch Anna thought. She wasn’t going to just settle for wherever Jenna snagged this snaggletooth fresh fish catch of the day from, she probably cat fished him on her behalf and used some truly awful photos. Lord knows there’s too many of those from nights of drunken debauchery. How embarrassing if she did use a photo of two, and there’s more than a few she can think of that she wished never existed!
“I would say the best place to sit is that far seat back behind that one wall. That way you won’t have to compete with the blender noise when Brandi makes the frozen blended coffee or fruit smoothie drinks.”
Missy waived over to Brandi and she waived back, then she made a hand motion to indicate she was sleepy and ready to go home and crash on the couch. She put both her hands together palm to palm and put her head against her hands. Missy pointed to her wrist and made an it’s almost time, hang in there motion.
After Missy’s mini counseling session, she finished the original task of gift wrapping the book.
Anna picked up the store branded bag containing wrapped-up book, “Thanks for everything! You’ve been really helpful!”
“Come back after the date and tell me how it went! I’d love to know.” I need to know. Missy thought.
“OK, will do!” Anna turned to head towards the bookstore exit. She wanted to put the gift in her car before making one last minute visit to the restroom just to freshen up and make sure her hair wasn’t an absolute mess. Not that she didn’t trust this bookstore girl, but it’s tough to put your faith in someone you’ve known all of about five minutes.
Missy hollered in Anna’s direction as she walked away, “Wait!”
After about a minute Missy had managed to place her cell phone number in Anna’s phone and populate her own phone’s contact list with Anna’s number.
“Just in case the date isn’t exactly—you know—ideal. Make some kind of distress signal.”
“Distress signal?”
“Oh you know, start talking really loudly or put your hands up in the air like you’re stretching. Or maybe like a whistle along with the music overhead.”
“Gotcha.”
She walked out of the bookstore feeling extremely confident. Maybe this date would go great? Why not?
She walked over to her car, unlocked it, tossed the book in the backseat of her car and headed once again, back into Leaf Street Books towards the café to await the arrival of her date.

The ultimate packing list if you are going to study abroad this year
For many of us, the new school year/semester is coming very fast and very soon. For some of us, a new education year is nothing special - you just have to set the alarm clock back into ‘I have got to get up early’ mode and go to school, college, university or however you want to call it.
However, for some of us starting a new year means more. It is related to moving out of home sometimes into a new city or even into a new country. This is related to getting familiar in a new surrounding and starting a new life where you don’t know where to find the best coffee in town, how to ride the bus or how to speak the language (cheers to all langblrs out there ;) ).
For all of you who belong to the second type of people, I dedicate today’s post. Organizing all the things that are related to such a move and saying goodbye to all your loved ones needs enough energy. You should not spend your time thinking about all the items that you need to pack for the big journey. And for this reason, I provide you with the ultimate packing list if you are going to study abroad this year. If you’re missing something that you would never leave at home reblog this post and add your most important travel gadget/item!
With that being said, travel safely and pack wisely ;)

Extra tips
Before you overload all of your bags contact your university and try to find out which of the items they will provide. Perhaps there is something like a starter kit they offer so you do not have to carry bulky bed or kitchen items with you.
Take only your favorite clothes with you. But there is this fancy dress that you own that one day could look so cool? Leave it at home. You won’t wear it. Period.
Don’t take things with you that can be easily bought after your arrival. This includes hair dryers, kettles, flat irons, big bags, stationery, kitchen items etc.
In case you want to travel with additional luggage ask your airline before your departure date regarding their conditions. There are airlines that offer an online check-in for your additional luggage or a pre registration. If you take advantage of such offers you can save a few coins.
Don’t forget to make a (digital) copy of your most important documents and cards!

The Guinean Peace Corps Guide to Packing
This list obviously isn’t perfect, but I’m sure if you’ve stumbled onto this blog post you’re looking for a good Peace Corps packing list, especially if you’ve just been accepted to Guinea and you’re getting ready to leave. I’m currently in my 6th month of living in Guinea and I’ve received a few things from home along the way.
Just as a reminder, you’re technically only allowed two large suitcases, at 50lbs each for the trip. However, I knew some people who paid extra for another bag, and, looking back, I should have just done that. It would have saved me and a lot of people at home money on the expensive overseas shipping to Conakry.
Things I packed:
Clothes
a note about clothes, try to get things that are quick dry or make for an active lifestyle. You will be washing your clothes by hand and you’ll want things that are very easy to clean, don’t show dirt, and don’t hold smells. I suggest Lululemon, Athleta, Patagonia, and those kind of brands. You can find cheaper and discounted clothes online at backcountry.com and Sierra Trading Post (also a great place to find any of the camping or hiking gear listed on here). You can also check out TJMaxx and Marshalls. Also, you’re going to get clothes made here and people are always leaving stuff “up for grabs” at the regional houses, so don’t pack too much clothes wise.
For girls, I will say, error on the side of caution when it comes to shorts, skirts, and tops. You can always cut things or have them tailored but where I live is pretty conservative and as much as I hate it, I wouldn’t be caught dead walking out of my house in a thin strap tank top.
3 pairs of pants that youcould wear in an office setting but also wear hiking (try Athleta for these)
1 pair of hiking or durable pants that you don’t mine messing up- I use mine to garden
1 pair of black leggings
2 pairs of running/workout leggings
3 pairs of shorts (try to make them longer/knee length)
2 pairs of compression shorts/spandex
1 pair of jeans
5 or 6 nice shirts (at least one long sleeved one, I promise there are places that it does get cold here)
2 or 3 tank tops
5 casual t-shirts/workout shirts
2 skirts (well past the knee and flowly)
3 day dresses
1 or 2 nice dresses (but not heavy or thick, the place where you train for three months is very hot)
10 pairs of underwear (check out ExOfficio for great travel underwear)
6 sports bras
2 or 3 regular bras
2 or 3 pairs of hiking/thick socks
7 pairs of regular running socks
1 pair of Chacos or tevas (I live in these shoes)
1 pair of running shoes
Hiking boots or closed toed shoes with a very good grip (the only real tourist thing to do in Guinea is hiking and you will definitely use them. I also use mine when gardening)
1 or 2 bathing suits (these are hard to find in Guinea)
1 good durable raincoat
1 lightweight jacket
1 sweatshirt
1 sweater/cardigan
Other wearables:
A good hat
Cheap sunglasses (you can buy more here and I’ve already broken three pairs)
Two scarves
HAIR TIES
Non-valuable jewelry if you like that sort of thing
A good backpack
A small foldable bag for market days
A purse
A small cross-body purse
Electronics:
INSURANCE INSURANCE INSURANCE (Clements Worldwide is the one I use. It was $150 for a year but it saved my life when I got robbed during training and was reimbursed almost $2,000 for the stuff stolen
My Macbook
A kindle or tablet- I use mine every day
An iPod (I also brought my old iPod touch in the case that I got robbed… it was definitely a smart move)
A smartphone (MAKE SURE YOU CAN REMOVE THE SIM CARD AND PUT IN A DIFFERENT CARRIERS SIM… I had a lot of friends have issues with that because they were tied to Sprint or another carrier that had the phone locked)
A lifeproof or otterbox case for the phone
A rechargeable external battery
A solar battery charger for phones (I recommend DragonX brand)
2 Luci Lights (look it up, it’s a solar light)
2 headlamps
4 power adapters/converters
A surge protector- trust me, my iPhone died my first month because there was a power surge and it fried my phone
Multiple charging cables for anything USB related
Three pairs of good earbud headphones
An external hardrive (2TB) (mine has hundreds of movies, tv shows, and workout episodes on it. I highly recommend this)
A digital watch
Home and Kitchen
Scrubba Wash Bag (look it up, in my opinion it makes doing laundry here a lot easier)
Duct Tape (if you forget everything else, remember to bring duct tape)
Electrical tape
Can opener- trust me on this one
Garlic press
A few good kitchen knives
Thin, plastic cutting boards
Three quick dry towels
Compressable pillow (I recommend ThermaRest brand)
An all purpose tool
Toiletries
Shampoo and conditioner (Seriously, you will want this. I ran out of both during training and there was no place to buy either of them where we were. You can also try LUSH bars, solid shampoo and conditioners, expensive but worth it.)
Dr. Bronner’s All Purpose Soap
Toothbrusth and toothpaste
Facial toner and cleaner
Face wash
Hairbrush
Lotion
Sunscreen (you are given some but I’ve found it clogs the pores in my face)
Basic makeup: eyeliner, mascara, lipstick, coverup, blush, and a small thing of eyeshadow.
Tweezers
Your favorite nailpolish
Headbands
Deodorant
Razors
Nail clippers
File
Alcohol wipes or a small bottle of alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.. Peace Corps doesn’t issue this and this has definitely saved me from infections a few times
Medical tape
For girls, Diva Cups (they will save you from using the crappy tampons medical gives us and keep you from having to buy pads, which are expensive)
Baby powder
Hairbrush
Mini bottles of travel hand sanitizer
Mouthwash
A few toothbrushes and a toothbrush top
Other Gear
A really good pocket knife
A few pens
Colored markers or crayons
A mini stapler
Rubberbands
A portable mini safe (I use mine here and just wrap it around the table leg. I keep all my extra money, my passports, and my credit cards in there.)
A mini sewing kit
At least two Nalgene water bottles
Liquid chalk markers (are cool for writing things on your walls and for using in the classroom)
Hair cutting scissors (multiple uses and of course, for cutting your hair)
Tape measurer
Wooden clothespins
Things I wish I brought:
My Birkenstocks or my Rainbow flipflops
A nice travel yoga mat
A nicer pair of dressy sandals
More packets of dried food (knorr pasta sides, etc.)
Cliff bars, energy bars, etc.
Tuna packets (you can find sardines here but tuna is almost 3 dollars a can)
Workout gear
More photos of my family and friends
A small projector (I got one brought over for me and cost me 85USD. It’s perfect for movie nights and doing presentations)
Lots of charging cables
A small and light extension cord
Small fan (you can also get decent ones here when you get ready to move to site, but not having one during training was brutal)
Essential oils (can be used to do all sorts of things, especially when it comes to repelling bugs)
A good set of twin sized bed sheets. (SHEETS ARE EXPENSIVE and the sheets here not always that comfortable. Dig up your bedsheets from freshman year of college and bring them along)
Here’s a list of things you can totally live without, but are nice to have:
For the Cook in You:
Rennet tablets (for cheese making- a project I’m still learning how to prefect)
A scoby to use to start making your own kombucha
Lots and lots of spices (you can buy them here but they’re expensive)
Measuring cups and measuring spoons
A small KitchenAid type handmixer and blender
A mini mortar and pestle
Beeswax
Cheesecloth
Small bottle of Truffle oil
Peanut butter
Lots of water flavoring or Gatorade packets
Oatmeal packets, dried food packets
Dried cheese powder (cheese isn’t a thing here and you’ll miss it more than you realize)
Bottle opener and wine opener
Any snacks you can think of that you can eat without preparation (training is rough when it comes to food verity, I legit ate a can of green peas once because all I wanted was something besides rice and sauce)
For the Workout Fanatic:
Soccer ball (I had a deflated one sent to me, just add it to a care package list you won’t want to take this with you)
Soccer cleats
Soccer socks
Resistance bands
Yoga mat
Arm band for iPod or phone for music
For the Gardener:
A good pair of gardening gloves
Packets of all kinds of seeds
A small hand shovel and small hand rake
For the Hiker and Camper:
A hammock with a mosquito net or a small tent
Carabineer clips
An ultralight sleeping pad
Compressable pillow (I recommend ThermaRest brand)
Moleskin for blisters
A dry bag to store your stuff when it rains
A steripen for water
For the Future Pet Owner:
*I got a kitten in Guinea and it was the first thing I did when I got to site. If you’re preparing to get yourself a furry friend, here’s a number of things you’ll want because buying anything pet related in country is super expensive
Cat or dog collar
Flea collar or medication
Small toys for them
Deworming medication
Things you can leave at home or could buy in Guinea:
High-heels. Trust me on this. You will never wear them (except maybe at Swear-In, but if you want there are places to find cheap heels here.) Save the space in your bag.
Most kitchen utensils (but I would suggest bringing at least one fork and one spoon)
A lot of books- theres lots of them here at the regional houses and if you bring a kindle or tablet, you can buy more or trade kindle books with other volunteers
A portable camping shower (you’ll get use to bucket baths and trying to set it up was much more effort than it was worth.)
A hair straightener and mini blow dryer. (You won’t use them)
That’s all I’ve got for you! I hope this list helps and if anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me or shoot me a message!
Sarah
