Completed: April 21st, 2024 (/i still have to watch the DLC episodes that didn't get released with the official loc, I guess but I'm not playing it any more so ?? lol)

Time spent: 49.5 hours (will be like 50.5 after the DLC stuff)

Rating: 9/10 (more objectively. but a very biased 9.5 in my heart.)

ohhhhh my god alright where do i even start with this. i guess i also have to talk about dgs1 a little bit in this review/mini completion log but I will TRY and keep it to just 2. [editor's note: somehow succeeded with this! lfg]

first, to get the non-spoiler parts of this out of the way:

please for the love of god play this fucking game if you've played the original AA trilogy but not the DGS duology. i can not stress this enough. i would not recommend playing them as your FIRST aa games because a) they will set your bar way too high (and too low simultaneously bc wow dgs1 still has whack as hell pacing) b) there are a few details, especially in this particular game, that will evoke no reaction in you if you haven't played at least the main three games but WILL cause you to start gnawing on drywood if you have Knowledge Of The Future

the whole dgs duology - and specifically as a duology, bc 2 makes no sense without 1 but 1 by itself is not on this level - is absolutely in my top 3/4 AA games now. i admittedly have not replayed the original trilogy in quite a while, buuuuuut T&T/AAI2/DGS1+2 are my new top 3. not necessarily in that order, give me a bit to think about it lol.

im going to be thinking about this game for the rest of my life probably. i can see why my best friend wanted me to play it for uh. seven years. because yeah it really is that good.

i want to cosplay four different designs from it. i have not wanted to cosplay anything new (to me) since neo twewy came out three years ago. take that as you will.

music still slaps. obviously. my favorite new song is absolutely partners (IYKYK) but agh. the new theme(s) that characters get are all so fucking good. clenches fist. the leitmotifs

definitely becomes relevant in retrospect in a few places where capcom obviously cut the hell out of the budget but they saved it for where it matters so i dont care. im also uh. very used to low budget VNs so frankly even 3D models are better than I'm used to LMFAO. i also you know. didn't realize that they did that until after the fact. so. they hid it well

if you havent played this go and play it (after playing the original AA trilogy). please for the love of god im on my hands and knees.

everything below the cut (i.e. below this point) has blatant unfiltered spoilers. you have been warned.

okay so welcome you've presumably played all of dgs2 if you're reading this. i have THOUGHTS. a lot of these will come off as critical/negative but i need to strongly emphasize that these are the only reasons that this game is not a 10/10 for me and otherwise i'm in love with it. it is fucking CLOSE. i am not talking a lot about the things i really love because that is.............................a lot of the game for me and we'd be here all day. the critiques are much more limited in number. but. you know.

dgs2 absolutely has much, Much better pacing than dgs1 does overall. it does not take 3 cases to get past a bunch of tutorial cases. this is a good thing. however..............the first two cases are still very slow. i won't call them pure filler, because a) reminding us about yuujin was a very good idea, b) they contribute to the Themes of the game. and im glad hosonaga was there again and (of all of the side characters we could have had) seeing souseki was good. i like them. but they really didn't need to be there to fulfill the themes of the game. case 2 in particular feels like a filler case, which I do not love given how tight the rest of the plot feels. if anything i feel like they should have done an interim flashback case without susato, as much as I adore susato, because as-is it's canon that ryuu had 3 cases in the span of a week. which feels INSANE

speaking of better pacing: im so glad dgs2 remembered that AA games can take investigation breaks between courtroom shit because running through ALL of the trial after ALL of the investigation in 1-5 was. let's say. taxing. the 'finding their footing' aspect of the first game

i do kind of wish we got One more case with the masked apprentice where susato wasn't there at all for the entire case. if only because then the delay between ryuu Thinking It and susato Knowing it would be even more painful. but i do really appreciate that they don't try to make it a woah big reveal as much as a painful "i know who you are but you don't." really adds a certain je nai se quois or however the fuck you spell that. idr. its 1 am when im typing this

also hey asougi can we fucking unpack how susato (the girl you were raised with to some extent, probably not like your sister but your weird younger cousin) called your name and you didn't remember who you were but you DID remember when you saw a wax reconstruction of your dead dad. can we fucking talk about that for a minute. can w

speaking of asougi. my god. they did such a good job with him. i think i wouldn't have cared nearly as much about him if all we had was the dgs1 stuff but his extreme motivation for the truth almost turning him into a violent attack dog is. aaaaaaaaaah. god. and the parallels between him and his father's followers (read: the von karmas) that one has from playing the mainline AA games. truly brainworm material

speaking of this: i can absolutely tell they did NOT think about writing the professor stuff with this game until they added in the masked apprentice - before he got turned into asougi - even though the reaper was obviously something that was planned. i do not care personally about this, because game dev is weird as hell and it REALLY works with asougi and van zieks' character arcs. in the same way that i don't think [SPOILER CHARACTER] from vlr would have been as good without the knowledge of 999, i think if barok had been foiled against a new character it wouldn't have worked as well. all that said. it sure is obvious they didn't know what they were doing. this makes me even more impressed that that they got it to work at all

the same is true of everything with the hound of the baskervilles but im really glad that they took it in the direction that they did.

also man it is so obvious that they probably wanted to have this be a proper trilogy like the original trilogy but then budget happened. because 2-3 through 2-5 all slap but they feel so fucking weird next to 2-1 and 2-2. like i dont feel that theres anything missing per se but a little more time for character growth would have been nice. hell even adding in an extra case (and/or editing 2-2....)

the only writing thing, aside from. 2-2 being like that. and the other weird pacing issues..that extensively is off to me is the whole assassin trading plot. i do think it is Very stupid and that they clearly wrote themselves into a corner with 1-5 on how to deal with it because they just...proceed to not deal with it until 2-4 and 2-5. however. even with that said. i actually kind of like that it is so stupid. because stronghart definitely feels SO obsessed with his version of justice that he wouldn't think through the potential downsides of having two free-roaming assassins running around and maybe coming to get his ass. obvious flaw that would not occur to him because of his insane ass behavior

its still dumb. but it's ace attorney dumb. so i can excuse it a little bit

stronghart being a damon gant expy was funny but goddamnit was it predictable. making him be so obssessed with justice that he talks to ryuu about it for 4 hours was funny as hell though and absolutely adds to him as a character. still dont like him that much Personally but hes definitely a character

i love every single character in this game (or i hate them but because they were written to be hated)??? how did they manage this again. dgs1 helps so much here because the character growth.

I really tried to like this run, I really did. The seeds were planted in the Failsafe arc, then there was a tiny bit with the next arc (Red Death), and the way this one began.

This is just my preference, but I enjoy a comic book story if the writer clearly has a passion for all the characters involved.

Don't use her as a "prop".

It's why I left Tom King's Batman run after Batman #81 because that's what Cass was in that run.

I came back to Batman because I truly did enjoy James Tynion IV's style in his Tec run. Yes, he played it safe but it was a FUN kind of safe.

Even if they were cheesy, Tynion's Batman and later Joshua Williamson's runs were fun. So was Mariko Tamaki's Tec run. They treated the characters involved with respect and gave some standout Cass moments. They didn't seem like a "prop" and somehow always figured into the story.

Why I SOOOOO checked out hard when Future State: Gotham did this too (so much so I totally have forgotten who wrote the story). Cass wasn't a character in that (among others). She was just a prop to showcase how "far" Nightwing had gone.

Now, this current Batman run by Chip Zdarsky has done this too. I really did give this run a fair chance. For his "Failsafe" arc the ideas were there but---

There was never any follow-up. No payoff to the ideas introduced in the arc. Cass jobbed but it made sense. Because at the very least "Failsafe" was made to be counter to Bruce and the Family. But…

We got zero payoffs to Cass/Duke doing anything in the arc or anything out of Gotham being lorded over by a machine.

Compare this to what's going on in Detective Comics by Ram V.

Yes, Cass is a minor presence but the writer pays at least some payoff from plots that he introduces the character too. There's consistency.

I see 0 consistency from Zdarsky from point A to B. Take today's #137 issue for example. We spent a setup with Cass getting zero motives as to why she (and Duke) are siding with the rest.

They just are.

0 characterization and 0 payoff from point A to B. What do we get for Cass in the issue? She jobs hard to Bruce. I just don't see any reason why as a fan of Cass I should care about this run?

I mean yeah, Zdarsky dangles the "happy" family in front of us in #136, and also tells us that bad things are coming for Bruce and the Family.

Buuuuuut… where's the characterization? The panel that tells us what Cass sees?

You could've easily had Cass in #136 just a mere two panels glance at Bruce and him back at her. Him knowing she knows something is wrong.

Nope. We don't get that. Just cute fun (we get that via Dick instead).

It would bridge to her being against him in #137. If that was the case I probably wouldn't be angry over the issue. Cass doesn't feel like a character in the story, just a prop. And when a writer goes that route I CHECK OUT.

The other problem I've been having with this Zdarsky run is the "word play" as well. Dick, Tim, Jason, and Damian all get name-dropped as "sons" to Bruce. Note who isn't mentioned.

AND YET...

But that is me just being picky and fandomy. But the other stuff I can't overlook. I will miss this run. I really REALLY love Jorge Jiménez's Cass. Like he understands the assignment ANY time he's asked.

Just that, good art has to accompany a fun or thrilling story. We're getting none of that from my point of view. Maybe this changes in a few issues. Maybe it'll be longer.

I just can't read this comic any longer. It's not a read I enjoy. So until then bye Batman. It was fun.

Anyway. I said my peace. I just want to vent this out of my system. 🙏

Shantae Mini-Headcanons - Tibia

You're probably wondering what this is, and to that, I say - I'm running an experiment! We'll see how this goes but hopefully it's a relatively short post

So, those of you who read my Romance headcanons post here might remember this little tidbit

Well, guess what? I have now remembered the details! Somewhat. I've also changed a few around but it's also been a bit since I first had that idea so I say it's fine

Anyway...I'm not going to cover the hypothetical romance since that would take a hot minute but I am going to briefly touch on my headcanons for the zombie tourist girl - or, as I'm calling her, Tibia - since her design is neat and, well, why not, right?

For anyone who's unfamilar this is the NPC I'm talking about

again this ideally should not be that long but I will still put a read more for anyone who just wants to scroll on

Her full name is Tibia H. Patella

It's weird to me that the only real indication she's a zombie is the green skin and the stitch around her left leg so I'm going to fix that. Tibia also has a stitch around her left arm (specifically around the area that is conveniently always obscured by her hair in her one animation) and on her initial awakening she was missing a whole-ass eye, which is why she took to wearing sunglasses

Key word to that last part is initially; Tibia has since fixed the lack of depth perception with an eye pilfered from an unfortunate shmuck who had the misfortune of getting caught in the Chit Chat Spider Queen's web and being its lunch, so all the sunglasses hide now is a case of heterochromia. She still wears them out of habit though

The little zombie boy we also see in Seven Sirens is her adopted little brother, Mort. The story behind him is that, while making a brief stop in a human town with the Zombie Caravan, Tibia found Mort homeless, starving, and notably lacking any adult supervision to take care of him. She tried getting him a home before the caravan was due to leave to no avail, but she couldn't just LEAVE him there, and with no better options presenting themselves to her...she ended up turning the kid so she could take him with the caravan

Tibia briefly got in hot water with the caravan for that stunt - civilized zombies aren't particularly keen on turning for the most part, as it's seen as enforcing the stereotype that they're no different from their feral, shambling counterparts who mindlessly bite and tear for a taste of brains, never mind the ethical quandaries - but after she explained the situation they begrudgingly agreed that she probably made the best move she could have there.

For his part, Mort has adjusted remarkably well to being a zombie and bounced back quick. He was the one who insisted that Tibia was his older sister now, and she happily agreed, making an extra room for him and generally acting as the authority figure he needs in his life

Tibia is one of Rottytops' several exes, though as is the case for all of Rottytops' dating life before she started dating Shantae, it didn't last for more than two weeks. She's heard the news, and is genuinely happy for Rottytops, glad that she's turning her life around...buuuuuut any time she's actually around Rottytops, she tends to be awkwardly tense. This has less to do with Rottytops and more to do with the fact that Tibia knows firsthand that Rottytops is a trouble magnet and just being in proximity of her means her entire afternoon has probably gone down the drain

Regardless of whether she's dating Harmony or not I imagine Tibia has a crush on her from seeing the Half-Genie Festival and, well. Like I said in the romance post Harmony is a built like an amazon Tibia fell for her reeeeeeaaaaaalllll fast. Mort teases her relentlessly about it and she is torn between being happy to engage in sibling banter or severely regretting telling Mort about dating Rottytops after she finally managed to recognize her in the Fillin disguise because she KNOWS that has to be fuel for the fire to him

Yui x Itadori AU!Crossover JJK/DL/¿Gojou or Sukuna?

This is the translation of a question from my inbox, which just talks about the AU Crossover of JUJUTSU KAISEN and Diabolik Lovers, with Yui being saved and having a cute romance with the JJK main character, Itadori :3, right?

I definitely like to think of this Au where Yui's partner is defined by the reader (although my personal favorite is Itadori) so the potential to write about Gojo with an older Yui is a tantalizing prospect (and realistic considering how the clan Gojo acts).

Gojo may or may not have been the one who saved Yui from the vampires in the first place, so from the beginning Yui would hold him in high esteem, not only for saving her but because she would quickly realize how strong he is and be inspired in a certain way. especially after realizing that even though Gojo comes from a strong clan, he's only human, he can die like her and still can with the monsters that terrorized her for years. That helps not to put him on a pedestal but in turn want to learn from him.

We all know that Gojo is not very fond of weak people, but I imagine that he interacts a lot with Yui in order to ensure that no one tries to kidnap her again, which leads to them getting to know each other better and understanding the context of what happened with the diaboys. , which leads to him respecting Yui more and not seeing her as someone "weak" but rather as a victim who did what was necessary to survive.

I imagine Gojo is very supportive of Yui getting over her trauma with the Diaboys, either by trying to warm her up by using her Normally loud and fun personality, but if that doesn't work, I think she could open up to her a bit to Let him see that he understands what it's like to go through something traumatic (this would be the most likely).

Yui has had birthdays in several Games, so I think she's definitely over 18 at the end of Lost Eden, so in Gojo's case, there wouldn't be much of a problem with the age difference. But even so, there is a different maturity difference and in personality, don't even talk about it, but it is partly a strong point.

It gives me a vibe that it would be something that Satoru would say to Yui, CHANGE MY MIND.

Besides, the dynamic with the boys would be hilarious, they wouldn't even believe that someone as adorable and good as Yui would be with someone like their sensei. I already mentioned it in the original post, but Yui is a mommy friend, so I wouldn't be surprised if Nobara, Meugmi, and Itadori see her as such, and totally ignore Satoru when he wants to be seen as a dad.

Taking a bit from gaming canon, Yui knows how to cook, I'm talking about soups, big plates for the Sakamakis (6 people) and most importantly BAKED GOODS DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO MAKE BAKED GOODS?? Apart from that they are delicious! Satoru becomes Yui's number one taster and brings her whatever she needs to cook to her liking, he helps from time to time so that it isn't so heavy, but you have to be careful that it doesn't end up in a flour fight.

GojoxYui is definitely something fun to imagine with the perfect amount of fluff and angst, the complete package.

NOW, with Sukuna I have mixed feelings, I really like the "bad REALLY BAD x pure person" trope, other than (in my perspective) Sukuna wouldn't want to kill Yui because of how useful she would be, which is already a good start, BUUUUUUT, I honestly can't imagine this relationship being healthy, don't get me wrong, I like it, but it would be hard to get anything out of Fluff without a Yandere background or something.

As I said in the original post, Sukuna at first would see Yui more as a trophy than as a person, but he wouldn't kill her for how valuable she is, both Sorcerers and Curses would want her, but only HE could have her because he is THE KING of curses. Now, I don't think Sukuna wanted to use Yui to get stronger because of Ego, he thinks he's invincible and for the most part he is. Does anyone assume that he needs a human to be powerful? Instant death.

I think I would only develop a greater interest in Yui if she makes the first move, I mean, Yui has already been around disturbed people (and even interacting with KarlHeinz before) so she wouldn't be as scared as the average person would be, since seen death before, unless Sukuna did something really barbaric in front of her or I tried to kill her(VERY unlikely). That probably catches Sukuna's attention and he wants to know more about her (like the interest she has for Megumi with a plus of constant interaction).

I talked about this a bit with my sister and maybe Yui will be able to get (probably not on purpose) into Sukuna's innate domain when she sleeps (like when she dreamed of Eden in More Blood) and thus interact more with him. I imagine Yui very curious about what Sukuna was doing before being sealed, which would 1. Raise the ego of this mf and 2. The esteem towards Yui increases.

When I say this would be a bit difficult without putting on the Yandere vibes, I really mean it, for a deeper friendship/crush point, Sukuna most likely won't hesitate to kill what he sees as a potential problem for Yui, the bishops who sent her with the sakamakis? Dead Karlheinz? Dead, the Sakamaki? Oh how he would enjoy this, after knowing everything they did to Yui he would be merciful with their deaths and be proud of his work. He may or may not resort to some manipulation to get Yui to turn to the dark side to his side and never be the victim again, he makes sure of that.

If we talk about an AU where Sukuna has his own body or his true form, let's be honest, Yui wouldn't do anything against him as long as she survived, it worked for her before and it will work for him now. After all, she knows that pleasing someone with a sky-high ego is a good way to survive (ask the Diaboys) and Sukuna would be HAPPY about this, not only because it strokes his ego, but because Yui willingly stays by his side as as long as he fulfills certain conditions (leaving Seiji alive, for example, and yes, one day I will talk about him).

Already established, I would say that it would be a dynamic where although Yui does not participate in Sukuna's bad deeds, she does nothing to avoid it either, she accepts his nature and instead lives better compared to other humans. It's his little lamb, adorable and naive, but untouchable. Something too precious to harm, but not just for her blood.

It's like a new version of the White Rose for curses, the White Rose of the King of Curses. Surprisingly protective of Yui, having the context of what happened to her, he is wary of everyone except maybe Uraume, at least Yui has someone else to interact with.

The YuixSukuna is definitely something, he has the old DL undertones, a bit of a dark relationship, with Yandere undertones, but he is surprisingly comforting and ironically much more loving than all the diaboys.

If there was a love triangle between the three of them, I don't think, I'm not good at doing something like that per se, but I would definitely like to see it with someone who knows how to do that kind of thing. stage, but I'll see what the future holds.

Some other day I'll talk more about this AU and its bases, but for now I hope you enjoy it :3

Please, I would love it if you would write up a post about how to torrent media! I'd love to do it but I've found every explanation so damn confusing I have no idea where to begin.

Well... I haven't actually torrented anything in a few years. My Usenet setup is quite a bit different.

But what I do know about torrenting boils down to this:

Torrenting works by a bunch of people providing pieces of a file/set of files that your torrent client puts together. You then also re-provide pieces of the file/set of files to others. That's what "seeding" is, and for a healthy community you generally want each user to have a 2:1 seed ratio (i.e., you provide twice as much as you take).

Buuuuuut seeding is what can get you in trouble legally, as providing media is way different from downloading it. As I said up top, I haven't torrented in a long time so I'm not 100% sure on how much companies are going after individual people nowadays.

You kick this off by loading a torrent file into your client program. This helps everyone's various clients work together to get and provide the desired media. Because torrent files themselves are not media, they are legal to host online. Sort of. Technically.

My basic tips for torrenting are:

Use a VPN. This obscures your traffic from your ISP (and everyone else). Yes, you have to pay for one, don't use a free one. And know that you're basically trading your ISP seeing your traffic for the VPN seeing your traffic.

Be very careful which torrent client (program) you decide to use. Some of them are loaded with malware. Including some that used to be legit! I do not know which one is now recommended

Yes, you have to seed. Don't be a leech

If you have a reliable source of direct downloads (which is when you just download something directly from a website through your browser), then using a VPN with malware + mining protection is probably sufficient.

But if you want to know how I do it, then read on

I'm no good at highly-specific terminology, but I'll do my best. I use Usenet to get all of my media. Yes, it's still around! And you are going to have to be brave and get a bit technical to use it. Not a lot technical, but a bit.

You'll also notice that several of these links just point you to r/usenet. Feel free to bail on me and follow their much more complete information!

Similar to above, you can't do this 100% for free (or at least you probably shouldn't). In this case, you need a newsgroup provider in order to let your computer navigate the system. Usenet is completely decentralized, newsreaders are your access. All of your Usenet traffic will flow through this service, not unlike a VPN (they are not VPNs, though some may provide VPN services alongside).

Media specifically is going to be in the form of NZB files. Similar to (but not quite the same as) torrent files, they are not media themselves but they allow our computers and newreaders find the media we want. Unlike torrenting, you do not need to seed.

Next step is we need an indexer. This is where we get NZB files from. Most that are worth a damn cost money, but many offer a one-time lifetime fee instead of a subscription.

The indexer you choose will provide you with an API key. We'll need this for our newsreader to talk to the indexer. It's kinda like signing in to a website or service.

While I haven't provided any other recommendations (largely to cover my butt), here I do recommend SABnzbd, Radarr, and Sonarr (all of them together; Radarr is for movies and Sonarr is for shows). This is gonna let us automate (almost) the entire process!

I'm not going to blow-by-blow this part, even though it's the most "technical." There are guides (I linked some already) and I don't think it would be useful to summarize. But we can talk through the flow:

You tie your indexer into these three programs via API key and point them at each other (again, follow the guides). Then we can do some cool stuff:

You could, theoretically, manually browse your indexer (most provide regular websites), download a NZB file, stick it in SABnzbd, and then deal with the resulting file. Or you could browse the much nicer GUIs of Sonarr and Radarr, select what you want, and wait. Sonarr and Radarr also have scheduling, so they will automatically queue up downloads when a movie releases or as new episodes of a show come out. We already told SABnzbd where we want our files to live, so once the download is done we can go there, open it, and watch!

ORRRR we could go a step cooler still

I also use Plex, which lets you point it at a folder (or folders) and it will set up a Netflix-like experience. If you point it at the folder(s) that you have SABnzb saving files into, then you've got a not-quite-entirely automated process of an updating personal streaming service. If you've tagged a show and a new season comes out? So long as your indexer hasn't gone tits-up you get new episodes as they launch in the quality you have pre-selected.

I even built a custom computer specifically to run this whole setup (with 24TB of space, which is nothing, trust me).

There's so much depth I'm not going into. Each of these tools and concepts go on and on, with bunches of customization options that I haven't fully explored. All in all it's a very cool experience that I cannot recommend enough.

This probably came off very rambling and not quite useful. But I hope it's enough information for you to do your own deep dive and figure out the best solution for you

Doesn't it feel rather telling that the one thing radfems hate more than anything is a woman who desires things that don't promote their goals? They fucking hate it when a woman chooses what makes her the most happy, whether it's being a housewife or a mother or engaging in kink activities. They don't care about women, they care about their own agenda. Radfems will gladly trample you and your desires under the guise of liberating you because God forbid a woman have the free will to make choices that aren't feminist enough.

Can radfems just be honest and admit that they just hate men. Like I know some are really vocal about that but so many of them try to couch it behind woke ideology.

They assume that women who enjoy feminine things like fashion or makeup or being a housewife are only doing it because "muh patriarchy". They assume women who are kinky and submissive only do it bc they feel like they are lesser than a man. They assume women are incapable of prioritizing what they want in life because man.

Yang for the bingo meme

Yang is... okay, here's the thing, I know a lot of people hate on Yang for having suffered character degeneration, and while that's totally valid and it's true that she has I still kinda like her? Not as much as I used to, and this joined-at-the-hip not-a-complete-character-without-Blek-next-to-her thing is getting old like yesterdecade, but she at least put up some token resistance to hiding critical information from allies and didn't sit around sipping tea during a battle?

Anyway, let's just say you're not as awful as some of the rest have become, but I'm still very disappointed in you young lady. Now, let's see here...

Wasted potential

In addition to the 'was a hero but now not' that she shares with Ruby (albeit to a lesser degree), there are a few major areas with Yang that would've been phenomenal to see portrayed well. Of course, this being the worst timeline and all, we can't have nice things.

What am I talking about? Well... Yang is the multiracial daughter of a biological mother who abandoned her, a father who completely checked out, and a stepmother who raised her as her own but died when she was young, who essentially took over a maternal role for her little sister whilst dealing with her own grief and trying to support her father through his.

That would be plenty, but she's also a bisexual disabled woman who presents strongly femme but has numerous masculine interests and is totally secure about that, who is forced to deal with her long-ignored abandonment issues when the place she calls home is destroyed at the same time she loses an arm, her sister is gravely injured and comatose, and her partner — who's supposed to stick with her no matter what and who she's developing feelings for —runs off without a word.

And then, when her sister finally wakes up, rather than staying there with Yang to help her deal with all of this — with the loss of her arm, her school, her partner, her friends, the future she'd been working towards (to her thoughts at the time, at least) — Ruby takes off without a word just like Blake, just like Raven, and takes the rest of their friend group with her as an extra cherry on top.

Buuuuuut none of that is more than briefly touched upon. Her identity — both racial and sexual — is completely ignored, her familial role is mentioned offhand and never brought up again, her disability is erased and her acceptance and adjustment to her loss and her new prosthetic were intentionally glossed over as 'boring', and her abandonment issues are only ever brought up when she seeks out Raven, who she then immediately stops caring about and only wants a portal from.

It's really hard to waste potential more than CRWBY has with Yang.

Didn't get enough screen time

This ties into the above, with the butchering of Yang's recovery arc and near-total lack of a personal arc earlier like the other girls had. She gets plenty of screen time in the recent volumes... but that's not the same Yang, and now that everything has to revolve around the macguffin hunt there's far less time for focussed character development.

Why do they look like that

This feels pretty self-explanatory, but just in case, I'm not saying she looks bad (though her fashion sense seems to have suffered a fatal injury somewhere along the way). But, uh, why does Yang Xiao-Long have paper white skin and blonde hair? Anybody??

I start making lists for packing a month in advance and then pack ten outfits that I don’t wear and instead wear the same thing five days in a row so maybe we’re in the same planning boat 🤷🏻‍♀️

See, my first thought was Ian because he was in ROTC and he seems like the type of guy to make grocery lists and plan for things ahead of time whereas Mickey usually struck me as a whatever fuck it I’ll just buy new pants five days in a row

BUT S10 wedding planner Mickey has me spinning that idea on its head and making me think that HE’S the better planner between the two of them, like Ian makes lists and stuff but he forgets to add things and gets distracted and packs the wrong things and ends up with three pairs of unnecessary footwear and packing for weird hypothetical situations

mm well Deku has officially turned dark, like for real dark, buuuuuut in a way that is actually a natural progression of his character, because if you remember Horikoshi loves parallels, and what’s more obvious than the fact Deku has been trying to walk down the same path as All Might ever since he was told to ‘show himself’ to the world back during the School Festival arc, and then again with All Might’s famous “You’re next” line.

It was a while ago when I read it, but I believe it was in vigilantes where we understand what All Might means by “You deserve to rest” and that he understands. I won’t go digging for that specific chapter lol, but in basically in the spin-off series bnha Vigilantes, we get glimpses of All Might in his prime.

In particular, we see that he really never stops to rest, constantly flying off to save as many people as he can because it’s a job “only he can do”. We even see Sir Nighteye (who is still All Might’s sidekick at the time) upset at the fact that All Might doesn’t even sleep, and while it’s somewhat played off as a gag aside from Sir Nighteye’s worry, we can see now that Deku is doing the exact same thing. 

In any case, Deku’s believed since the War arc that as the wielder of One for All, its burden is his to carry, especially with the added pressure of the fact that he’s been told he may be the last user and must defeat AfO himself (because only a quirkless person may receive OfA without dying early, and quirkless-ness is very rare now)

There was no clear turning point, not really. It’s more that Deku is sinking himself deeper and deeper into his duty, to the point that he can’t see past the next job. He won’t eat like we see him do heartily earlier, he won’t even, in All Might’s words, look back at his mentor anymore. 

AfO really managed to get under his skin with that video, and if there’s a way to describe Deku right now, it would be “staring straight ahead blindly”. He’s marching forward without thought for his surroundings, including his own self. In the previously ideal and bright hero world, this made All Might look heroic. But now in this grey, doubtful world:

Deku is, literally and metaphorically, tearing himself apart. His hero costume gets more and more worn, and thus so is his image as a hero. On a side note, he looks super badass, but more importantly he looks like a dark version of All Might - like some sort of skewed or twisted version of the hero who always comes to save the day.

Aside from Deku, we get a little more insight on the status of heroes, namely the mass retirement. I actually sympathized with Death Arms, even though I saw some comments that he wasn’t a real hero. To be fair, what the heck is a ‘real hero’? Sure, a lot of heroes retired when the going got tough, you could say that the ones ‘in it for the money or the fame’ were weeded out, but what was Death Arms real reasoning for leaving? Yes, it got tough, but on top of the fact that it got tough, being a hero suddenly went from something of good status to a cursed position. 

This pretty much sums up the state of the hero world right now, which is that ‘heroes are humans’. This mass retirement was bound to happen, but what makes it troubling is what’s going on with Deku amongst all this. I don’t need to explain it, since the pro-heroes explained everything in that meet-up scene about how the media is closing in on Deku and a reveal of OfA would shove Deku into the cycle of negativity. So yeah, the fact that AfO hasn’t revealed OfA himself means he still has plans for Deku, ‘cause he doesn’t care about All Might anymore. All I can really imagine is AfO trying to get Deku on his side, or stealing OfA, I can’t wait for the next chapter so we can get some more insight.

Anywayy on a less serious note:

Mount Lady is lookin super fine with that scar, but more than just aesthetic purposes the addition of scars and messier/dirtier costumes/settings is to keep with the more serious and dark tone. It allows us to take her seriously when before she was portrayed as a flirty/image-conscious hero. I kind of love of small design choices like that can change a character’s entire demeanor. Uhhh the closest example I can name in real life is when Canada’s prime minister Trudeau grew a beard. Lemme tell you, it did wonders in making him appear more serious and reliable during covid, as opposed to his earlier washy playboy looks.

Also, Stain is back! That weirdo. Uhhh he sure seems happy to see Deku still jumping to the rescue. Or maybe he’s just glad to see All Might, we all know he’s lowkey a fanboy. Urk, well in any case it’s definitely foreshadowing that there will be a potential confrontation between him and Deku.

aaaaand finally, 

lol how the turn tables, it’s Endeavor ghosting Shouto now. Also it’s lowkey cute how he immediately checks his phone whenever he hears a notification, man’s excited for any sort of communication with his son. Mmm but yea I was excited to get even a mention of Shouto, I hope we get to see what the Class 1-A kiddos are up to soon.

how do you imagine Yuno and Yukiteru’s life post game? I headcanon them as married with a daughter in their adulthood

Ooh, I could really go on for a while about this. I'll try not to ramble too much.

Ok, so the anime and the manga both end a bit differently, right? In both cases, stuff happens that leads to Yuno shattering the wall between realities that separates the Third and Second Worlds. But the manga ends with Deus asking her and Yuki to become the gods of the Third World, and Yuki ponders how much he's looking forward to re-meeting his old friends in that world. On the other hand, the anime ends with them becoming co-gods over the void of the second world instead, and starting to develop new life there. There's also a late coda on both that shows they get like, a metric ton of Murmurs. lol.

So my post-series headcanons incorporate all of that. If Yuno's shattered the wall between the Second and Third Worlds, why can't they just be the gods of both? There's two of them, and they have a veritable army of imps to support them. In addition, there's that whole "gods can share/gift their powers onto others" thing. So I imagine they will gift some divine powers onto one or more Murmurs in one reality whenever they move over to manage the other one. I've previously mentioned that the current Murmur seems to be inherently loyal to her current god, so it'd make sense for them to trust Murmur 2 from the Second World and Murmur 3 from the Third the most. Plus, there's also Akise as a backup option. And I think they'd come to make use of him as both assistant and observer of the natural world semi-regularly, still allowing him time to further his detective career. (This inevitably leads to the friendly trash talk that I've previously suggested.) And if push comes to shove, I bet they could get Minene to handle oversight of the world for an hour here or there.

I imagine Yuki and Yuno would want their godly realm to feel more home-y because, unlike Deus, they started out as human beings with human needs. Rather than a grand "Cathedral of Causality" for them to dwell in, I picture Yuki remaking their god-realm into an isolated version of his old house for them to share. (Admittedly, we have official post-series art of them lying on some tatami mats, making their environment resemble an Eastern-style home like Yuno's house. But I think they'd ultimately shy away from that aesthetic because Yuno has so many bad memories from there... and because she'd still be spending part of her time in her Earthly house anyway for reasons I'll get to in three more paragraphs.)

However, I'm sure they'd wind up spending the majority of the their time trying to take care of the Third World rather than growing the Second. And they'd often leave things up to Murmur 2 and Murmur 3 while they go down to Earth and try to at least act like they have semi-normal lives. Yuki did say he wanted to reunite with Hinata and Mao and Kosaka and the like, so this is the obvious way to do that.

There are a couple of hiccups to this idea — the first one being the fact that there's a whole other Yuki running around down there! Buuuuuut you know how Yuki's mom has been working her current job out of Hong Kong? Well, I'm sure Yuki and Yuno can work the strings of cause and effect from on high in such a manner that Third-World Yuki's mom gets an offer for a permanent job in Hong Kong, leading the whole family to relocate. And by doing so, our godly Second-World Yuki can establish a regular presence in Sakurami City without raising too much suspicion.

The second and bigger hiccup is how Yuno is going to be an independent goddess while still making her Third-World parents believe she's living a normal life. With her disappearing regularly because she has much larger responsibilities than those of a normal teenager, antics will ensue.

As for the question of whether they’d have kids to my mind: Eh, probably eventually. But they have literal millennia to get around to it. 

Oh god, I've already rambled on for too long. I guess I'll stop there for now. But suffice it to say that I've put a LOT of thought into this. Arguably too much, lol.

I watched Lindsay Ellis' latest video a couple weeks ago, about the outrage and drama that has followed her since basically starting to make content online. It's a good video, I do recommend it, though it does get pretty heavy by the end. But something she said in the video really struck me and I've kept thinking about it on an off since. It was about how shame and shaming are, in theory, powerful tools to punish people who have done something wrong, but how internet culture and the rise of the alt-right has twisted it:

"Trump is never going to face justice for what he did, Brett Kavanaugh is on the Supreme Court for life, Ben Shapiro gets off on your outrage. You can't shame the shameless."

And while Ellis' through line was about how she was going to start being 'shameless', i.e. deleting her personal Twitter and just not interacting with the mob that routinely comes for her head over any and all imaginary slight, I've been thinking about it more in the context of the well documented infighting that tends to occur amongst the left.

I think the quote 'you can't shame the shameless' is illuminating to a certain segment of of leftists (or those who pretend to be leftists but are in fact just looking to the "troll the libs") in the sense that, no, the people who are in fact the problems in our society, the alt-righters and the politicians who sold their soul to pander to them, they are shameless. They can not be be shamed, no matter what you do, what you say, or what evidence or arguments you bring. They waveringly think they are right, you are wrong, and they simply do not care about your shaming.

And because of that, it has lead to some on the left to turning their outrage against those who can be shamed, namely other leftists. And while attacking people who don't deserve the attacks is of course not good, I don't want to paint all these outragers with the same brush and ascribe the same intention to all of them. I think some of them are genuine in that they believe they are redirecting their outrage to a place they believe it can do some good, since the aforementioned shameless are not bothered by their outrage, but I also think a not insignificant amount of them are either jumping on the outrage bandwagon for internet clout or are seeing their opportunity to harass someone online and are taking it. (And the fact that most of the targets for these harassment mobs are women is... telling, in this regard.)

And the unfortunate thing is, I don't really have a solution to this. My only advice is to be more mindful when you see an outrage mob forming and try and do your own research and come to a conclusion on your own... buuuuuut for example, Ellis does admit that would have been difficult in her case as she doesn't really talk much about her personal life or the drama that hounds her, so all there really was were the bad faith arguments against her. And I absolutely am not saying that she, or anyone, should have to document her personal life on the internet solely so that if a Twitter hate mob comes after her, she has the receipts needed already posted online.

I could say be mindful of just jumping in with an online mob, and that is good advice, but I also think that being able to think critically about people online, leftist or otherwise, is also good advice. I could say be ready to call out the people participating in an unjust hate mob, but I don't begrudge the average internet user for not wanting to paint a target on their back.

Unfortunately, I think it's a, internet culture thing, and we're only going to be able to stop this cycle of hate mobs by educating folks about the harmful effects they can have when they're used casually and recklessly.

Kyidyl Does Archaeology - Part 1

About me, and about the site.

I’m gonna have to do this in parts because I tend to be, uh...wordy.  Actually...ok, so I believe very strongly that knowledge does no one any good behind a paywall, but I also have a hard time parsing it down for social media because, well, people are complex but also ADHD.  So if you guys have any feedback for me that’d be awesome.  I’ll probably do these as a series so they don’t get overwhelming to read.  Tag for ‘em will be kyidylCL

A caveat to all of these posts: archaeologists walk a fine line between “I’d love to tell you about this and here look at this cool thing” and “I don’t want to share a colleague’s forthcoming paper on social media before they publish it and also fuck looters”. We classify anyone who *isn’t* an archaeologist as a looter.  Because even when you find artefacts just lying around, as soon as you pick them up they’re removed from context and become near-useless for scientific research and data.  When we remove them we capture all that information via a prescribed methodology.  When other people remove them they tend not to.  And you can tell how legit someone is by how much they care about the context.  Context is key, that’s why we’re so meticulous.  Anyway so I can’t tell you where the site is specifically because I’m not allowed.  I also, though, have been heavily involved in this project so I’m mostly going to be telling you about my own research so it’s ok to publish it on social media.  Anyway, that’s why if you show an archaeologist something you just like found they’ll be like “gee...thanks...well...I don’t want to squelch your curiosity, buuuuuut...” 

A little bit of background on my involvement with this site: I’m a newly minted archaeologist.  I’ve had my MS a little over a year, and I’ve been doing things in that time to keep up my skills and get the field hours I need to be a registered state archaeologist (it’s basically just like a professional license for archs.) bc I didn’t get enough in school and my dissertation is on genetics and cannibalism (and if you want to know about *that* I’ll tell you, but in another post.), so yeah.  Anyway.  I’ve been volunteering with the local archaeology society, and they’re great.  They found this site because two of the members grew up in the area and just knew of its existence.  So I volunteer with them and am one of like 3 people they know who have a degree so I get to be really involved - probably more than I would be otherwise just cause people with my credentials are in short supply for them.  I’m basically the only member with a degree, and the rest are consultants they bring in for stuff like this (including the RSA who works the site - the site director.).  

Before a site can be dug there’s a lot of prep work involved.  It varies based on what kind of money you’ve got and access.  We have lots of access - it’s on private land owned by someone who is childhood friends with a member of the arch society - but almost zero money.  Before I showed up, in summer 2018, they did a series of what are called shovel tests.  Basically there’s a grid laid over the site and where the grid lines intersect they dug a round pit down to what archaeologists call “the sterile layer”, IE, where there’s no evidence of human activity.  Basically, you dig small holes to see if it’s worth digging big holes and in this case it was worth it.  

When I started working with them, I took all of the material from the test pits and sorted and catalogued it.  We’ll come back to this in the next post, so remember this.  Pause.  

I forgot to tell you where the site was.  Like not specifically, I can’t do that, but I CAN tell you that it’s in the Shenandoah valley.  Wanna see pics? Yeah, you wanna see pics (I took all of the images I’m gonna be posting so I give myself permission to post them. :P):

The site has been occupied for a long time (how long? Well, that’ll happen in the pottery post soooorry. ;), and I think you guys can see why.  It’s also on a slight ridge overlooking a river so it’s near fresh water, easily defensible, and is fertile.  Speaking of which... 

It’s also what archaeologists call “highly disturbed”. See, after the colonizers drove the natives out of the Blue Ridge mountains, they started farming the fertile land in the valley.  This site was farmed for several decades, and not only that but during the civil war they dug a big ‘ole defensive trench through the middle of it.  So whilst farming disturbs the finds, it tends to a, only be a max of 15 inches deep and b, keep the finds in the same relative area they’re pulled out of.  And we can tell where that layer ends (I’ll show you that in the post about our pits bc I don’t think Tumblr will let me add more pics.), so even though it destroys features and damages things it’s a lot less destructive than, say....building a giant war trench and shooting at each other.  

The site is an entire settlement.  It’s...several acres in size.  There are burial cairns in the woods around it, and some rumors that human remains have been found there in the past - although we have not, as of yet, found any (much to my personal dismay because, well...bioarchaeologist.). 

So who lived here? Well, when the colonizers drove out the natives they didn’t exactly keep good records about who lived where, but generally speaking the site is on both Massawomeck and Manahoac land. We don’t know which group lived there, and there were other groups coming and going in the general area so it could have also been Piscataway or Potomac or even one of the later nations that formed the Iroquois.  Based on the age though I think the best candidates are the Massawomeck or Manahoac.
