And a lot of times they've got old bits of thread left in the holes, especially on mother of pearl shirt buttons! I've got all my buttons sorted by material now, but do sometimes miss them being mixed up in a tin. They're so fun to dig through.

One of the best things I've ever found at the thrift store was someone's entire button stash, which was about 60% plastic and 40% Good Stuff, including Victorian glass ones, and some tiny little boot buttons.

The thing I love about button jars is that when you are given one by someone else who can't sew/knit anymore or buy one at a yard sale, you're not just getting the buttons collected by the previous owner from sales or from projects they never made or whatever. The natural way of acquiring a button jar is secondhand. So maybe they got a jar in the 1980s from someone who'd been sewing since the 1940s. That person got a jar from someone who'd been sewing since the 1890s. And so your jar will have, like, bone or glass buttons meant to be used on petticoat waistbands, and cards of black buttons from the 1930s and so many plastic ones that could be from any point in the last century.

There are two fics I'm reading right now that I'm enjoying a lot: Dry Spell by StillPurplePanicking and The Entanglement by ImpassionedNovelist. Both on Ao3, both not finished yet and I giggle everytime there's a new chapter.

Finished on Ao3, my favorites are Salt, Rum, and Tangerines by ButtonsButtonsButtons and That Goddamn Spark by Desert_Queen_Nancy. A lot of ZoNa fanfics came out after the live action (still the funniest thing ever) and a lot of them were based on THAT scene from episode 5 but I genuinely think That Goddamn Spark is the best of them.

Now, from fanfiction.net, from a million years ago, two authors published some stories that I love so much: What are you Doing? and An Awkward Encounter by HelixForward (An Awkard Encounter might be the only AU fic I truly enjoyed, I don't usually like them); and too close to see or step away by juliamei. Not so sure now, but this last fic was my favorite ZoNa fic for a long while.

A boxful of ear protectors for the staff on the ward that’s looking after my mum. Tired and lacking concentration, so these are perfect.
