Cheerio cereal bars

Cheerio cereal bars plus#
(Side note, these hungarian cookie energy balls are also great for that purpose!). But for the longer course athletes, these can be an amazing way to fuel with real food. I wouldn’t typically use them for shorter course athletes since the higher fat content doesn’t always mesh well with the intensity level. Most breakfast cereals are enriched with iron so they become an easy way to add extra iron to your diet.Īlso, if you’re an ultra-runner or long distance cyclist, these bad boys make a nice snack during training and events.
Cheerio cereal bars plus#
One thing I love about these peanut butter honey cheerio bars when it comes to active women: they’re a great source of iron! A lot of women, particularly in endurance sports, are at risk of falling short in iron intake. 1 cup butterscotch chips 1/2 cup light corn syrup 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 5 cups Cheerios cereal. But if you prefer having the smaller 100-calorie squares – by all means, cut ‘em that way! 1/4 cup butter 10 oz mini marshmallows 1 box (11.1 oz) Cheerios Cereal Very Berry 1 package (1.2 oz) freeze-dried strawberries 1 bag (12 oz) white. It’s enough to feel indulgent and satisfying, but not so much that it seems like sugar overload. I tend to do the latter and make bigger ones, because the 200-calorie portion works well for me. You can cut 4×4 to make 16 total squares, or you can cut 3×3 for 9 bigger squares. Melt 4 tablespoons salted butter with 10. I figured it was probably pretty simple to recreate, and it was.Īll you have to do is heat up the coconut oil, peanut butter, and honey, then stir in some Cheerios and press it all into a baking dish. Pour 6 cups Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios cereal into a large mixing bowl. It clicked that a friend’s mom used to make Cheerio bars like these when I was a kid. (My kiddo was obsessed with them for a while, but in toddler fashion has boycotted them the last few weeks.) I was determined to find something to do with them today so they wouldn’t just sit up there and get stale. I’ve had a half-eaten box of Multigrain Cheerios sitting on top of the fridge for a while now. In fact, that’s how I decided to make these. 11 ounces cheerios, I used multi-grain with oat clusters 1/4 cup sliced almonds 2 tablespoons salted butter 6 ounces mini-marshmallows 1/2 teaspoon pure. You’ve probably already got everything you need lying around your house. They’re incredibly easy to make and have just four simple ingredients. I just made a batch of these peanut butter honey cheerio bars today to satisfy my sweet tooth. Something sweet and delicious and indulgent. I’m a firm believer in the 80/20 rule when it comes to nutrition – 80% nutritious choices, and 20% flexibility for some treats.īecause let’s be honest, sometimes you just want dessert. Ya’ll, we are real people who enjoy variety in our eating habits too! 😉 It makes me giggle when people assume that dietitians don’t eat dessert (or burgers, or pizza, or insert any other food here). So I'm home alone from Thursday to Monday. Give me a simple brownie recipe please. I want to try baking
Alright folks.  Here is the famous brownie recipe.
(This is written for how Americans cook, i.e. Fahrenheit and measured by volume.  If you use Celsius and/or weight, I apologize I don’t have the conversions handy.  I know there are a couple people who have tried it that way, so maybe they can chime in.)
Ingredients:1/3 cup butter¾ cup sugar2 Tbsp water1 tsp vanilla12 oz chocolate chips (semi-sweet)2 eggs¼ tsp baking soda¼ tsp salt¾ cup flour
Preheat the oven to 325*F and grease a square glass baking dish (8x8 or 9x9 will both work).  In a medium pot on the stove, combine butter, sugar, and water.  Bring just to a boil, then remove from heat.  Add in vanilla, then half of the chocolate chips.  Mix until melted and well combined.  Add eggs.  (This is the only tricky part of the recipe and it’s really not that hard.  Just make sure you mix in the eggs quickly.  Because the mixture is still quite warm, you don’t want the eggs to start cooking before you’ve gotten them mixed in.)  Mix in baking soda, salt, and flour.  Once all combined, add in remaining chocolate chips.  Pour into baking dish and pop into oven.  Bake for 30 minutes.  (I like my brownies just slightly gooey, so bake a little longer if you like them more done.)
Just to give you a head’s up, the edges are a bit raised above the middle.  So don’t freak out if it’s not perfectly flat.  Because these bake in a glass dish, they stay hot for a long time when you pull it out of the oven.  Give yourself around an hour for them to cool, at least.  Trust me, they’ll still be warm.
Here’s the fun part!  You can mix in a bunch of other things, instead of the last half of the chocolate chips.  Just make it 6 oz (this is the one weight measurement).  I’ve done M&Ms, Reese’s Pieces, mini Reese’s peanut butter cups, York peppermint patties, Rolos, Skor bars, peanut butter chips, butterscotch chips, etc.  You can pretty much do anything as long as it works with chocolate.  Honestly, I prefer it with just the plain chocolate.
Go forth and enjoy!
Let me know if you have any questions.

Peanutty Candy Bars...Wait, Why The Oatmeal??
I found this recipe in a Taste of Home magazine and it sounded delicious!  But, the addition of the oatmeal base seemed, well, strange.  It definitely was quick and easy and I had a party coming up, so....
Tumblr media
These things are terribly addictive.  The oatmeal base is really different, but in a good way.  This photo was taken of the last lone bar, sitting on a plate.  Luckily I took the picture, cuz it was gone soon after.
Peanutty Candy Bars
4 cups quick-cooking oats
1 cup packed brown sugar
2/3 cup butter, melted
1/2 cup plus 2/3 cup peanut butter, divided
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 package (11 ounces) butterscotch chips
1 cup (6 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped salted peanuts
Directions
In a large bowl, combine the oats, brown sugar, butter, 1/2 cup peanut butter, corn syrup and vanilla. Press into a greased 13x9-in. baking pan. Bake at 375° for 12-14 minutes or until mixture is bubbly around the edges.
In a microwave-safe bowl, melt butterscotch and chocolate chips; stir until smooth. Stir in peanuts and remaining peanut butter; spread over the oat mixture. Cool for 10 minutes; chill until set.

Making Homemade Christmas
Giving homemade gifts is a good way to save money during the holiday season because you can give a special and elegant homemade gift for a fraction of what you would have paid retail for a similar item. If you think that you don't have the talent or are not "crafty" enough, read on and you will see that it is possible for you (yes, even you!) to create your own homemade Christmas gifts
youtube
Homemade food gifts
Some of the best gifts are homemade food gifts! Everyone likes food, so get your appetite ready and whip up something delicious to delight your friends and family!
* Colorful Holiday snack mix: In a large bowl combine red and green M&Ms, raisins, butterscotch chips, mini twist pretzels, Golden Grahams cereal, and dry roasted peanuts. Mix thoroughchrily and put into clear jars. Cover the tops of the jars with pretty fabric and secure by tying a ribbon around the top. This is a Christmas gift idea that is especially well-suited for the kids' teachers and casual acquaintances.
* Nut bark: Making homemade nut bark is easy and makes an impressive gift. Use one kind of nut, or a mixture. Mix 12 ounces of semi-sweet or white chocolate and spread it evenly on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with 2 1/2 cup of nuts and chill until firm. Break into pieces.
* Biscotti: Biscotti is hard Italian cookie. When you make your own biscotti, you will have a delightfully elegant gift that is sure to impress even the gourmet on your list. It is also a very crisp cookie which makes it stay fresh much longer than softer varieties, so you are not rushing around as much at the last minute. Put them in a pretty jar tied with a ribbon, or in a tin or include in a homemade gift basket.
* Infused Vodka All you need to make your own fancy infused vodka is: a bottle of vodka; glass bottles with tight seals; and flavorings such as halved and seeded jalapenos, vanilla beans, or cherries. Divide the vodka and flavorings between the bottles and refrigerate 3 to 7 days. Remove the flavorings and keep refrigerated for up to two months.
* Candied Nuts This sweet treat is easy to make, but so impressive looking that no one but you will know how easy they are! Toast 2 cups of mixed nuts on a cookie sheet in a 400 degree oven for 6 - 8 minutes until fragrant - do not burn! In a skillet mix 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 tsp. salt and 2 Tbsp. water. Simmer this mixture and occasionally swirl the pan until the liquid is amber colored - about 12 to 15 minutes (do not stir the mixture - this will cause it to crystallize).
Stir in the nuts and spread them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper - let cool.
Tumblr media
* Stuffed Fruits Delicious as candy and full of all the good nutrients of fruit and nuts AND it is quick and easy to make! Stuff dried seedless prunes with walnut halves and seeded dates with whole almonds. Arrange on a plate or in a pretty tin lined with waxed paper.
* Cocoa Mix: Cocoa mix is a homemade food gift that is a welcome treat for kids and adults of all ages! Create a homemade gift basket with cocoa mix and a pretty mug, or simply tie a festive ribbon around the container.
Packaging tips for homemade food gifts:
* Over-sized coffee mugs make good reusable containers for food gifts. Fill to a bit overflowing and place the filled cup on the center of a large piece of colored cellophane, gather the ends at the top and secure with a ribbon.
* Baskets are always a favorite, and can be decorated with paint or lined with a pretty napkin - paper or cloth.
* Pick up orphan plates and platters at yard sales, flea markets, thrift stores, or store bargain bins to use for giving cookies and cakes. Cover them with plastic wrap, foil, or cellophane.
* Save empty potato chip cans (such as Pringles and Stax). Wash insides and let them dry thoroughly. Use decorative contact paper or glue on gift-wrapping paper to cover the outside of the can and stack cookies or fill with spiced nuts or candies; seal and top with a fancy bow.
More homemade Christmas gifts
Teacup Candles: * If you have (or can find) mismatched or odd teacups (or small cream pitchers or sugar bowls), you can make easy homemade candles tailored to your recipients tastes and decor. Flea markets, garage sales or your grandma's cupboards are great places to look for odd but pretty teacups.
* Decoupage Trinket Box You can buy inexpensive boxes made of lightweight wood or heavy cardboard and easily transform them into attractive trinket boxes. This is an excellent Christmas gift idea for kids who want to make their own homemade Christmas gifts. The boxes can be covered with fabric or decorated with stickers, cut outs from magazines or photographs and covered with Mod Podge (available at craft stores).
* Tile Trivets Find some beautiful tiles at your local home-improvement store. Look for clearance-priced tiles (left overs that are not enough for a large job) and you can get them at a greatly reduced price. Attach a layer of felt to the back of each tile (at least 6 by 6 works best) to create a useful trivet and a lovely homemade gift!
Tumblr media
* Cork Trivet If you have a bunch of corks that you have saved from wine bottles, you can make a cork trivet. If not, you might be able to get some from a bar.
1. Find a picture frame that's large enough for your project. You can use a frame you have or get an inexpensive wooden one at the dollar store or a yard sale. It needs to be as deep as the corks are wide so they will fit inside it.
2. Remove the glass and any wire or brackets from the frame.
3. Put a piece of heavy cardboard on the back of the frame and glue it into place.
4. Arrange corks inside the frame - move them around until you come up with an interesting design that you like. You can put a champagne cork upright for a different look (you will probably have to cut some off of the bottom of it so it won't be too tall.)
5. Once you are happy with your design, glue the corks in place using the hot glue gun.
* Herbs in a Cup Buy vintage floral pattern teacups at secondhand stores and plant chives, oregano, rosemary, or basil in them. Decorate with a bit of ribbon and a card describing how to care for the plant.
Homemade gift baskets
* Favorite recipe: For someone who is a particular fan of one of your recipes (or a dish served at a local restaurant) - print the recipe, purchase all the ingredients, and package it all together in a basket. Include a wooden spoon or nice new dish towel for an added touch.
* Movie time: For the movie lover, create a basket with a coupon for movie rentals or a movie or two on DVD. Add either homemade pre-popped and seasoned popcorn, a package of microwave popcorn, or other crunchy movie-time snack. For additional items, think of things you would want when watching a movie at home - drink coasters? a bottle of gourmet root beer or other beverage? Be creative!
* Car care bucket: Buy a plastic bucket and fill with chamois, car wax and car soap. If you want to add something more, what about a car accessory such as a CD case, steering wheel cover, or cup holder?
* Beauty Gift Basket Use a cosmetic organizer or a basket to create a beauty-themed gift basket for the teenage girls on your gift list. Include any type of makeup, nail or hair care products, and/or
lotions. Add cotton balls, q-tips, emery boards, tweezers, and a beauty book or issue of a magazine related to beauty or hair care.
* Cocktails Gift Bucket Use an ice bucket as a unique vessel for this gift. Fill it with the recipient's favorite spirits and mixers. Ideas for additional items include: coasters, fun cocktail napkins,

Peanut Butter Blondies with Peanut Butter Cups
Peanut Butter Blondies are a peanut butter lovers dream.  Add peanut butter to a traditional blondie and then top them off with peanut butter cups!
I am definitely a blondie fan, truth be told, I would take a blondie over a brownie every time.  How about you?
What is the difference between a blondie and a brownie?
You probably already know what a brownie is,  a dense, chocolately, cake like bar cookie.  A blondie is pretty much a brownie without the chocolate.  Traditionally, blondies are made with butterscotch chips and brown sugar and I have a delicious butterscotch blondie recipe here.
Today’s version of a blondie is a little different than the traditional blondie because instead of butterscotch, it is full of peanut butter goodness. I love the traditional blondie but after tweeking it to create this peanut version I think I may like these better!
How to Make Peanut Butter Blondies
Mix your wet ingredients together first. Beat your butter, peanut butter and sugar together until they are nice and fluffy.  Add in eggs and vanilla and mix until combined.
Mix all your dry ingredients together in a separate bowl and then add into wet ingredients.  The trick is to not over beat your peanut butter blondies.  Combining the dry ingredients together first helps prevent overmixing.  Mix just until combined.
Add the mixture to a 9 x 13 prepared pan.  Be sure the pan is greased or lined with parchment paper.  I prefer parchment paper because then I can lift the blondies out of the pan to slice them.
Evenly place your peanut butter cups on the batter and press into the batter.  I used 28  of the miniature peanut butter cups, placing them in a row of 4 x 7.  Be sure and cut into 28 bars so that way you get a peanut butter cup in every square of peanut butter blondies!
Bake at 350 degrees F for 25-30 minutes until the edges are golden brown.  Don’t over bake.  I like my blondies a little chewy.  Cool to room temperature and then drizzle with melted chocolate and peanut butter.  I melt both in the microwave but you can also do so in a double broiler.
Allow the chocolate and peanut butter to set up before cutting into bars.  Cut into 28 bars so that you end up with a peanut butter cup in each bar.  You don’t want anyone to fell cheated!
Your peanut butter lovers are going to be in heaven and there is definitely enough chocolate in these to make your chocolate lovers happy too.  I shared them with my neighbor because I knew I would eat way too many!  This is the text I received, “Oh my, those peanut butter bars are amazingly sinful!”  Guess she liked them!
Some of my other favorite bar cookies:

Peanut Butter Pretzel Magic Bars
These Peanut Butter Pretzel Magic Bars are a MUST for your next party! Think: Super Bowl, office party, or birthday. They have a pretzel crust with layers of peanut butter, chocolate, coconut, and sweetened condensed milk topped with more pretzels.
Photography Credit: Cindy Rahe
Have you ever had a magic cookie bar? They’re shaggy little squares of graham cracker, coconut, chocolate, butterscotch chips, and condensed milk.
This is an amalgam of pantry goods that, when combined, make for much more than the sum of their parts.
A NEW RIFF ON MAGIC BARS
And while I do love a good old magic cookie bar, for me, the original version leans a little too sweet. So, I made a version with pretzels and peanut butter to bring some salty balance to the party (salt + sugar is my baking language).
The results are these cookie bars layered with a sandy pretzel base, chewy coconut, peanut butter chips, and chocolate chips, bound together with sweetened condensed milk fortified by peanut butter.
They are at once, sticky, chewy, crunchy, sweet, salty, and totally craveable.
TIPS FOR BAKING THESE BARS
To make sure the center of these bars set enough to slice, be sure to bake them until the edges caramelize and turn golden. Then cool them completely to room temperature for a few hours before cutting.
When you are ready to remove the bars from the pan and cut them, run a knife around the edges and gently turn out the bars. They should be firm enough to handle but the crust can crumble a bit.
Cut into squares with a serrated knife.
MAKE-AHEAD AND STORE (OR FREEZE!)
You can also make these bars a day ahead. Just cover the pan of cooled bars in foil and leave them on the counter.
The sliced bars can be stored at room temperature for up to 5 days. Store them with parchment between the layers or individually wrapped in plastic wrap (easy for grab-and-go treats!).
The bars can also be frozen for up to a month, either individually wrapped in plastic, or with parchment between the layers. Place the bars inside a freezer bag with as much air pressed out as possible.
To thaw, remove the bars from the bag and let them thaw at room temperature.

Peanut Butter Pretzel Magic Bars Recipe

These bars are quite rich and decadent. Cut into 25 squares if serving at a potluck or large gathering, or into 16 squares if you're in the mood for a bigger treat.
Ingredients
4 cups (160 g) salted mini pretzels, plus additional for the top
1/2 cup (4 ounces) unsalted butter, melted
3 tablespoons sugar
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk (397g), divided
1/4 cup (57g) smooth peanut butter
3/4 cups (100g) peanut butter chips
1/2 cup (100g) mini chocolate chips
1 1/2 cups (75g) unsweetened coconut flakes
Method
1 Prep for baking: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray or grease an 8x8-inch square baking pan and line the bottom and two sides with parchment paper.
2 Make the crust: Add the pretzels to the bowl of a food processor and pulse until most of the pretzels are fine crumbs with a few larger bits (no larger than the size of a pea). You can also crush the pretzels in a bag with a rolling pin.
Pulse in the butter and sugar (or stir together in a bowl). It should hold together when pressed together with your palm but it’s sandier than a graham cracker crust.
Press the pretzel mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan. Use the bottom of a measuring cup or glass to really compact the mixture.
3 Bake the crust for 15 minutes. Remove and place on a rack to cool slightly.
4 Warm the peanut butter: Measure out 4 tablespoons of the condensed milk into a bowl and set to the side to use later. In a 2-cup measuring glass, combine the peanut butter and remaining condensed milk and microwave for 30 seconds. Stir the mixture until smooth.
5 Assemble the layers: Spread half of the coconut onto the pretzel crust, followed by half of the peanut butter chips and chocolate chips.
Pour the peanut butter and condensed milk mixture over the top and repeat the layers of coconut and chips. Arrange a few whole pretzels on top and drizzle with the reserved condensed milk.
6 Bake the bars: Bake on the center rack of the oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until the edges are just golden around the edges.
7 Cool and store: Remove from the oven and cool completely on a rack before cutting. Use a serrated knife to slice into 16 large bars or 25 bite-sized bars.
Magic bars will keep at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Gooey S’mores Cookies
A gooey s’mores cookie is a scrumptious mash up of small bits of s’mores pieces in a cookie that you are going to love!  The melty chocolate, sticky marshmallow and graham cracker flavor combination you love, transformed into a delectable easy to eat cookie.
S’mores are a family favorite all year long! If you love all things ooey and gooey, try my Ooey Gooey Lemon Coconut Butter bars,  And for a bar version try To Die For Ooey Gooey S’mores Bars.
Gooey S’mores Cookies
Summer doesn’t have to end when you have these cookies around. Bring the best of campfires indoors with this simple, yet not as messy twist on a classic.  Graham cracker dough provides the base stirring in semi-sweet chocolate chips and mini marshmallows to S’more perfection.
Cookies are like a warm hug and these are no exception. When you make these you’ll feel like your right back in the woods or backyard surrounded by family and friends. The smell wafting through your house will bring back memories and make everyone happy. Quick and easy without the smoke or fire!
S’more Ingredients:
These ingredients are pantry staples, whip them up right now! S’more cookies are always a hit.
Sugar: White sugar helps cookies brown
Brown Sugar: Try dark brown sugar for a richer flavor
Butter: Butter is always best
Egg: Look for Large eggs
Flour: Using unbleached white flour give a tender crumb
Vanilla: Imitation vanilla will work here as well
Graham Crackers: Crush the crackers with a food processor to a fine crumb
Baking Powder: Helps make the cookies rise
Salt: Table salt helps balance the sweet
Chocolate Chips: For fun try extra large chips
Mini Marshmallows: Can cut up large marshmallows if needed.
Let’s Get Baking!
These s’mores cookies are so simple to make and a family favorite!
Cream: Beat the sugars and butter until super fluffy before adding in the vanilla and an egg.
Crush: Either use a food processor or a gallon ziplock bag to crush the crackers very finely.
Mix: In a separate bowl mix the crumbs with the flour, baking powder, and salt
Blend: Add the sugar mixture to the flour mixture till thoroughly mixed.
Fold: Gently stir in the chocolate and marshmallows.
Bake: Drop by heaping Tablespoons on a lined cookie sheet and bake 10-12 min at 350 till golden brown.
Make it Grand with these S’mores Cookies:
Create the best s’mores cookie just the way you like it. All so delicious!
Marshmallows: If you want to try a fun twist on these already amazing little vittles, try using cereal marshmallows. Now you don’t have to go buy a bag of Lucky Charms and pick out all the marshmallows, they actually just sell cereal marshmallows!! How fun is that?! Look for them in the baking isle with the regular marshmallows or you can buy them on Amazon. They won’t be as gooey but still oh so good!
Chocolate: You can get creative here. You can use mini chocolate chips for lots of goodness all over.  Use milk chocolate chips to recreate that classic s’mores taste. Try dark chocolate chips for an intense flavor to help balance the sweetness of the marshmallow.  Don’t like chocolate? Peanut butter or butterscotch chips will do just as nicely.
How to Freeze S’mores Cookies Ahead or After:
Freezing Cookies:  You can freeze these in an  for 2-3 months. Simply thaw on the counter for a few hours before eating.
Freezing Dough: Make a double batch of dough if you desire to make them again for fresh from the freezer cookies. Drop large Tablespoon scoops onto a baking sheet and freeze for about an hour. Transfer the dough into a freezer gallon bag or airtight container. When ready to bake simply place the frozen dough on a cookie sheet and bake for 12-15 min at 350.
