So I’ve been working on this since back in March. It should’ve been done in the same month, easy peasy, but I procrastinated on the last little bit until now. :p Originally, I’d started it because I’ve always wanted a shawl, always wanted to make one for myself, and I just never got around to it. I was doing other things. Then I had a couple of hospital stays and they kept it so cold in there that I kept thinking to myself, “boy, a shawl would really come in handy right now.” So, I told myself that when I got out I’d start one. And I did. :p
This is from a pattern called Butterfly Stitch Prayer Shawl by njSharon AND DebiAdams on Ravelry, and I used a video tutorial by Fiber Spider on YouTube to get the stitching down. It’s really simple and once you work through the first set and then do a repeat you’ll have it down pat and can go on without having to check the pattern or check the video (whichever you’re working from).
The yarn I used was Lion Brand Mandala in the colorway Wood Nymph. I don’t really like this yarn so much, although it did grow on me after awhile. It just seems kind of flimsy to me. Not so much because of the lighter weight, but more because the imperfections in the yarn seemed to directly affect the integrity of the yarn itself. If that makes sense? I found thin areas. I don’t know how else to explain it. But, I love the lightweight of it and I love the colors you can get with Mandala. So, I guess it’s kind of a trade off. :p
I used a 5mm hook for this project.
PS: You don’t have to make it this big/long. I did that because I like shawls like this, but if you prefer a shorter shawl then that’s absolutely fine. Just make it to your desired length, you don’t have to do anything special to the pattern for that.

started crocheting my mom a new prayer shawl yesterday. Worked 27 rows before I realized that my gauge was somehow off and the butterfly filet pattern was distorted. So now starting again and trying a new stitch... I hope this one turns out.

Then the birds stitching the dawn with their song
have patterned your name.
Then the green bowl of the garden filling with light
is your gaze.
Then the lawn lengthening and warming itself
is your skin.
Then a cloud disclosing itself overhead
is your opening hand.
Then the first seven bells from the church
pine on the air.
Then the sun's soft bite on my face
is your mouth.
Then a bee in a rose is your fingertip
touching me here.
Then the trees bending and meshing their leaves
are what we would do.
Then my steps to the river are text to a prayer
printing the ground.
Then the river searching its bank for your shape
is desire.
Then a fish nuzzling for the water's throat
has a lover's ease.
Then a shawl of sunlight dropped in the grass
is a garment discarded.
Then a sudden scatter of summer rain
is your tongue.
Then a butterfly paused on a trembling leaf
is your breath.
Then the gauzy mist relaxed on the ground
is your pose.
Then the fruit from the cherry tree falling on grass
is your kiss, your kiss.
Then the day's hours are theatres of air
where I watch you entranced.
Then the sun's light going down from the sky
is the length of your back.
Then the evening bells over the rooftops
are lovers' vows.
Then the river staring up, lovesick for the moon,
is my long night.
Then the stars between us are love
urging its light.

I’m super proud of this because it’s probably my first elaborate thing I’ve ever made. It’s a modification of the butterfly stitch prayer shawl, modified to make it suitable for blankets by Fiber Spider over on YouTube. He’s got a 3 video tutorial for it and he goes through every single stitch.
I did a triple picot border that I learned from Bella Coco, which I modified a bit because I preferred not to have the bar between the picot clusters. To modify it, I just single crocheted into each stitch until I got to the one where I was supposed to make the picots in.
ETA:
Supplies: 5mm or US H hook, Bernat Baby Sport yarn in Baby Pink.
Stitches: Chain, double crochet, treble crochet, half double crochet, single crochet.
About 30″.

Started on this yesterday, maybe I’m crazy for starting another project right now? But I’ve had this yarn for a year and I’ve been wanting to make a wearable out of it SO badly. So I’m making a shawl. I’m gonna post an update every day to keep myself on track. (They’ll be tagged #butterfly shawl if you’re not interested.)
The yarn is actually a Caron Cake but I’ve split it into the three individual strands so it’s ~1,000 yards of lace weight instead of ~300-something yards of heavy worsted. I’m using a G hook. There are 8 color changes in the skein, 24 now that I’ve split it into three, so I figure if I do a color or two every day I’ll be done in no time.
Pattern is the very cute Butterfly Stitch Prayer Shawl, available free on Ravelry.

I really need to finish that butterfly stitch prayer shawl. I just have one repeat and then a simple half double crochet border and I’m done. It’s been that way for months. Do you think I’ve bothered to do it? Nope. Usually, I can’t wait to finish a project and here I’ve been procrastinating for months on this one. :p

This was the first truly elaborate thing I ever really worked on and I love the way that it turned out. I was so proud when I finished it! I’m still super proud of it, and I hope the person that I give it to loves it.
It’s about 30″ square, and it’s adapted from the Butterfly Stitch Prayer Shawl. I didn’t modify the pattern, though, I’m nowhere near that awesome. The phenomenally amazing Fiber Spider did that and I learned to do this via his tutorial on YouTube.
I used Bernat Baby Sport yarn in Baby Pink, and a 5mm hook.
