My husqvarna Viking has the anxiety of a racehorse (tension issues like the rest of her breed) but does some lovely work and can be very speedy. I have great luck with vintage industrial machines (have used two different one and love their gumption, sturdy draft horses with a lot of speed) and every machine in the theatre costume shop I work at has a different personality. My faves are Elizabeth (a Morgan like horse, durable and dependable, but oddly scary to just a select couple of people, does amazing work and is accessible!!!), Thomas (sounds like a train, but boy howdy is a really useful engine. Really all purpose equine, does everything from Georgette to jute!), and Cheryl (technically identical to my frenemy Trixxie, but unstoppable. Takes on multiple thick layers at a time with no question. Occasionally gets pissy if used for too much dainty stuff or if she senses you’ve started favoring another machine. She needs a firm hand and a fearless approach, but she’s oddly gentle with a complete newbie. No patience for the cocky though).
to be honest I think working on a sewing machine strains my eyes as much as being on a computer does. However, I am incentivized to remain alert and focused by keeping my fingers within stabbing distance of a needle making 60 stitches per minutes.
