the hounds of harrenhal is a slow-burn brienne x sansa romance within a whimsical adventure with a good mix of found family + re-found blood family fluff. don’t get it twisted, this is still pretty plot heavy. since this is a rather expansive work, there are plenty of other eventual pairings such as gendry/arya and jon/satin (i hc jon snow as the most clueless bisexual to ever live and i love him) in addition to some surprises for later.

can you spot the jenny of oldstones and prince duncan of dragonflies reference(s) in the collage? in addition to rhyming with past asoiaf-verse love stories (dunk x rohanne, jenny x duncan, elissa farman x queen rhaena, lyanna x rhaegar), THOH draws on the persephone/hades abduction myth to subvert both the hound's offer to escape with sansa during the blackwater and littlefinger's "rescue" of sansa from king's landing.

for the purposes of the fic (curse you, abandoned five year gap), sansa's been aged up to robb's twin and two years have passed in-universe.

brienne becomes the newest wearer of the hound's helm after lem when jaime sacrifices himself to lady stoneheart following an escape plan gone very wrong. as the hound, brienne enters a tourney at the eyrie as a mystery knight to win some much needed coin to help the brotherhood without banners through winter. there, lady alayne arryn begs for help escaping a doomed marriage; brienne temporarily sets aside jaime's honor-saving mission for sansa to help her. petyr baelish announces that the hound has abducted sansa stark from the eyrie and advertises a large reward for her safe return. meanwhile, tyrion is trying to use his previous marriage to sansa to claim the vale for the mountain clans and daenerys. sansa hides out in the riverlands’ magical hollow hill with brienne and the brotherhood, falling in love as tensions within the realm build up to a second dance of the dragons amid a years-long winter. when love is the death of duty, what happens when your duty is to the one you love? this work will ultimately take place over the course of several years, weaving in new allies and foes for our star-crossed lovers as the realm moves from crisis to crisis. for generations to come, all of westeros will sing of harrenhal’s hounds and its witch queen. but life is not a song; in this story, it is far sweeter.

meta thoughts below the cut on why a future briensa is objectively one of the best ASOIAF ships in terms of thematic potential.

briensa has the best elements of the far more popular s*ns*n and br*ime ships except they're both teenagers and, crucially, brienne has never held sansa at knifepoint 🩵 no shade to either ship though bc the themes those relationships explore have sent brienne and sansa on journeys that have made them kind of perfect for each other; ie, the subversion of brienne being a protector to sansa rather than a threat is especially relevant if brienne is the next hound after lem!!! alexa play god bless the broken road

brienne is the hero sansa prayed for!!! sansa has learned to put more trust in disfigured people than "beautiful" people which means she can see brienne's beauty in a way she cannot!!! thematically it would be well supported yet subversive for sansa’s true knight and true love to be a jonquil darke type rather than a florian type 🥹 thematically i think the surest route to true love for sansa is a naerys + aemon situation so why not make it like alysanne and jonquil if they ✂️? it's not my fault grrm accidentally (?) wrote sansa as a closeted femme4butch!!!!

enjoys going to the gym. she likes to stay strong in case she needs to protect you - or herself. prefers boxing to stay fit.

you probably met through mutual friends, or at the gym. i don't know. even in modern date i can't really see brienne as the type to go to bars or clubs, even gay ones. maybe on a whim if her friends want her to? she's initially very shy but she keeps seizing every opportunity to talk to you. she's all blushy and simultaneously is holding eye contact and looking away all nervously.

likes your general size and height difference. she likes looking down at you, picking you up, holding you in her strong arms. as you become involved more, she definitely goes out with you to make sure you're protected and is not shy about shoving or punching a man... or two.

her fashion i feel would consist of breathable button up shirts, and trousers or pants she can move around easily in but fit her well. likes slicking her hair up, or just leaving it down.

eventually you move in together. she makes herself very helpful by doing handy things around the house, helping you reach things you can't, and helping you handle sharp knives when a piece of meat or fruit is particularly difficult to cut. likes to stand behind you during such, and does it for you to 'show' you how it's done. also carries all of the groceries in and likes carrying ur bags when u go out shopping.

tbh... i feel it in my bones that she's a top. i can see her being a switch in terms of sub/dom, though, and she's definitely a possessive soft dom. she enjoys everything. from scissoring, using her mouth on you, using a strap, her fingers - she just likes to make you feel good, and i feel like she's also more than eager to be touched herself.

With the show - which, admittedly, I've only seen pieces of but Gwendolyn Christie can ACT - I actually clocked her as heterosexual but like. Demisexual. Maybe grey-ace? Like, yes, sex is cool and feels good and orgasms are great for relaxing, but there's a supposedly-new swordplay technique on display tomorrow, so she needs to get plenty of sleep so she can watch as carefully as possible.

Jaime being the crazy bisexual is 100 percent accurate, he even sits upside down if he's not paying attention. He's besotted with Brienne.

Now, is Brienne "butch" aesthetically? Yes, because she's a warrior and it's practical. That doesn't mean she CAN'T look femme if she wants, it's just not high on her priority list in most situations.

I can relate. Being femme takes effort, especially when you're a broad-shouldered Amazon of a bitch. But don't you dare tell me that she didn't wear something like this and knock Jaime out from sudden blood loss.

I'm like a solid 9 inches shorter than Gwendolyn Christie, but I have the shoulders and build, and people've been clocking me as a lesbian my ENTIRE LIFE. I am not. I'm demiromantic and pansexual. I tend to wards liking... Feminine energy? Vibes? In romantic partners, but I was married to a dude for 13 years. So I'm a little defensive of Brienne of Tarth, despite not going here. Young Nova could have used her, when sorting through their gender feelings in the mid to late 90s. But since I didn't, I'm now protective of her and her archetype - the straight woman people think are gay - so that big, broad-shouldered women can know that they, yes, are women if they want to be.

I want more Brienne of Tarth's in the world of literature and media, because I want more people to know that they can look exactly as femme or masc as they want at any given point, and even change their mind, and it doesn't change their gender unless they want it to.

Gwendolyn Christie and Brienne of Tarth are like. My safe space. The place where I hold a tiny candle of womanhood alight for future Nova, should they want it.

The Hounds of Harrenhal

Longfic! Canon compliant except for the fact that Sansa is now Robb’s fraternal twin. The story begins in 302 AC, making Sansa 19 and Brienne 21. This is queer adventure romance about Sansa x Brienne.

After Jaime’s death, Brienne takes over the Hound’s helm and persona in her grief. To restore his honor and legacy, she resumes her mission to find Sansa; along the way, she enters a tourney at the Eyrie as the Hound to win some much needed coin to continue on through winter. At the Eyrie, Lady Alayne Arryn begs the stranger in the Hound’s helm for help escaping a doomed marriage.

Brienne temporarily sets aside her mission to help the lady escape north to reunite with her family. Petyr Baelish then announces that the Hound has abducted Sansa Stark, who has been in disguise as his bastard daughter Alayne, and advertises a large reward for her safe return. All this as Tyrion uses his previous marriage to Sansa as an attempt to take the Vale for the mountain clans and Daenerys, ultimately leading to a second dance of the dragons as the Long Night looms over a years-long winter.

Soon all the singers of Westeros would sing of Harrenhal’s Hounds, their witch queen, and the “abduction” that started it all - but life is not a song. In this story, it is far sweeter.

In the light of recent events:

These characters were already strong while also being very traditionally feminine. They did not need to use brute force, act angry and brash,"yell to be heard" because they weren't butch enough ?! and now that they are all their problems have faded away not because they were badasses themselves who made others respect them because God forbid a traditionally feminine female character be badass but because, you guessed it, a serum made them look hyper masculine. Because a female character is only as strong as she's traditionally masculine.

They don't even deign to use feminine form of words for their empowered female characters™️.

& I wondered why Brienne "you have courage. Maybe not battle courage perhaps but... i don't know,... A kind of woman's courage." Of tarth, who was indeed a high-born lady and never once objected to anyone calling her lady in the books kept saying "I'm not a lady." In the show. And said "you whine and cry and quit. You sound like a bloody woman." To Jaime in the show for some unknown reason.

And Arya "the girl matters too" Stark said "most girls are stupid" in the show.

One would think Hollywood sees feminity as weakness & its "strong female characters"™️ are not like other girls.

At this point, they'd make biopics of Florence Nightingle, Frida Kahlo, Harriet Tubman, etc ... and put them in an armour and give them a sword to show that they're strong female characters™️ .While also calling them sir.

To talk about a different fandom for a change, lemme tell y'all about an extremely niche ship of mine that I really wish other people would get on board with: Sansa Stark and Brienne of Tarth from ASOIF/Game of Thrones.

Just, think about it. Sansa spent her entire life dreaming of marrying a handsome prince or a chivalrous knight, only to have her dreams shattered by the horrible men she met instead. Meanwhile, all Brienne wants is for someone to see her as a true knight, rather than dismissing her based on her gender.

All I wanted from the series was for Sansa to realize that the last true gentleman in Westeros is, in fact, a woman. Brienne would treat Sansa not just like a princess but like a queen, and would be understanding of Sansa's trauma and be gentle with her, and Sansa, in return, would respect Brienne for her bravery, loyalty, and strength.

This pairing has everything! High-fantasy butch-femme dynamics! Sword lesbians! Sansa Stark getting the fairytale romance she always dreamed of! I need it!
