Uncanny X-Men #95
Spoilers + Comments + More
Why is Storm colored this weird shade of green? send help please. It's still Dave Cockrum as the illustrator but they have a different colorist this time and it shows (it's Petra Goldberg). Like the colors are fine, good even throughout this issue but Storm's skin color here is not it at alllll.
John Proudstar is also weirdly pink in this issue.
My reaction: Oh Banshee'll just disable the plane with his sonic screams/blasts! eASY PEasy!
HE JUMPED ON THE PLANE? JOHN PROUDSTAR JUMPED ON THE PLANE??
the iconic panel of Charles Xavier feeling John's death
and Then Banshee being guilt-ridden and grief-stricken
and then Cyclops is being all cold with the "guess it woulda happened sooner rather than later. It comes with the job." like bro is not okay at all, his friends left him, Jean left to do her own stuff, and Cyclops is just struggling ain't he.
I wonder if anyone ships Scott and Sean together as like a crack ship at least? I doubt they'd make a good romantic relationship, but like as a one-time hookup. They'd be a funny crack ship imo.
#uncanny xmen 1963#uncanny xmen#Uncanny X-Men#Banshee#john proudstar#sean cassidy#scott summers#someone stop me before I keep thinking of worse and worse crackships#thinking about when Sean called Scott a fine boy and that's why he wouldn't let him go splat against the mountains#which like it was totally a joke yknow#but it gave undertone of flirting#like at least Spideytorch makes sense so it's not really a crackship#x-men comics#x men comics#xmen comics

dates
hi im autistic and i like numbers and dates so im gonna think abt that with petrigrof to think about a timeline because its fun
Since this is an early mobile phone
mobile phones became available to the public in 1983
and this (came out about: HMMM its giving me early 2000s like early early 2002 but correct me if im wrong) like I remember round cd players like this but also to be fair we had flip phones until 2018 so we were behind ig
cheers ran from 1982 to 1993
(also fun detail from stakes the song marceline sings with two bread tom is from a sit com that ran from 1985 to 1990 as well)
also if hes doing an exhibit about the 1990s they already happened
Also fionnas phone is from 2000 so 2000 happened and made phones
So yeah like a lot of ppl i think the mushroom war took place in the 2000s and betty and simon probably met in the early 1990s maybe even late 1980s if we think abt it hooray her headphones also give early 1990s
BUT IM NOT DONE
The average age for a grad student in the us is 33 so lets say they are in their late 20s early 30s when they meet in 1993 (im just making stuff up now) im gonna say shes 27 or 28 since its implied she is Currently a grad student and im ignoring marcys scrapbook because that will never make sense) and hes already graduated that and is doing a phd okay so say hes 30 more or less in 1993
If a person is 30 in 1993 that means they were born in 1963 and in 2003 they would be forty so simon and marcy would take place in 2010 if hes approx 47 and marceline is 7 she would have been born exactly in 2003 when the war and apocalypse happened which yknow my maths and estimates not great but i think is interesting anyway. Im gonna say he puts on the crown in the year 2000 and betty also disappears into the future in 2000
Also if betty is 28 (born 1965) when they meet plus 7 years means she is 35 when she goes into the future and 37 in come along with me
also if finn is 16 when elements takes place and shes on mars all through to temple of mars that means she spends a year on mars more or less and about 2-3 years in the future/ooo
If simon reverts back to before the crown that would make him 40 lets say and 52 in fionna and cake
Also if simon puts on the crown in 2000 and he leaves marceline when she is 11-10 years old it takes him approx 14 years to get to that point which is just interesting but also sad
more fun things
996 years from 2010 is 3006
finn is born 2992 (if he is 14)
also shermy and beth (if its 1000 years from 3009) would take place in 4009 making marceline 2006 years old by that point
#sorry this is a mess and i still have more to say#simon petrikov#adventure time#betty grof#petrigrof#fionna and cake#ok nothing im sayings making sense so its not a serious thing#they are slightly older than women being able to open their own bank accounts#in the usa that wasnt until 1974#its not official so dont eat me its like a fun thought exercise

Lee Bodecker Blurb
So......I've been talking about Lee a lot with @bucknastysbabe which of course means I pooped out something kind of horny. Imagine he and Florence get a nasty divorce at some, feel how plausible that is, then come back to this. Also kind of some kink discovery but Lee is such a good vessel for feedism yknow
Lee had a routine. He got off patrol, drove forty minutes out to the cabin on the far side of the county, and ate a somewhat miserable dinner while ‘I’ve Got a Secret’ or ‘The Price is Right’ droned on in front of him, driving the stale silence into the corners for a little bit.
Sometimes he stopped at the diner in Meade for food that was more salt and bacon grease than real ingredients, ordered in a quantity that made the teenage girl working the register raise her eyebrows; sometimes he exercised the full extent of his cooking skills and put a TV dinner in the oven. Either way, he parked his ass on the sofa, let the sound of the television fill his head and ate his dinner in a scene that would not be out of place in the 1963 edition of ‘Pathetic Divorcees 12 Month Calendar’.
Most nights, in an astounding display of disregard for personal dignity, Lee jerked off after eating. Sometimes he focused on the television and let Betsy Palmer float into his imagination, leaving the panel behind to show Lee what was under her tight little skirt. Other times he thought of his ex-wife, saw her chocolate dark hair and recalled the feeling of her breasts in his hands, how she’d tip her head back with pitchy moans when their sex was good. The only downside was that that usually led him into thinking about how nights like that had dwindled as he spent more time working-because to Lee, being on patrol or filing paperwork or meeting with Leroy all fell under the umbrella of ‘work’, at least for his purposes-how, coming up on the day Florence had served him the divorce papers, even their coupling became cold and distant and quiet, usually ending in yelling or tears if not both.
Thinking about that made Lee feel like shit.
The masturbation fodder Lee liked the best, though-or maybe just what he felt the least amount of guilt over-was the feeling of his own gut, packed with fatty diner food or ice cream and Nabisco cookies, skin warm from the stretch and stomach slightly aching as it tried churn through everything inside. He preferred not to dwell on why that feeling got him so absurdly hard-why palming his swollen belly made his cock leak like an old faucet.
In any case, masturbation was the third part of Lee’s routine. The fourth part was really playing the washed up cop and passing out under the fog of a full stomach and an orgasm. At a different time he would’ve polished off the image with a couple of beers, something to add to both the haze in his mind and the bloat in his stomach, but. Well. He was trying, as pathetic as it sounded.
As pathetic as ‘trying’ seemed to be, seeing as he still ended up conked out on the sofa, television illuminating how his undershirt was slowly creeping up over the curve of his gut like some slovenly sitcom husband. Except, that is, for the nights when Lee had the post-nut wherewithal and motivation to actually get into bed. It was actually a little bit sad how quickly he’d adjusted to sleeping alone. There was something almost reassuring about getting into a cold bed, as opposed to one warmed by a body that he knew has been waiting for hours; there was no one to disappoint or fight with or lie to in a cold bed, although Lee had done all three quite liberally throughout his marriage and didn’t feel so much guilt that he’d take them back, given the opportunity. He certainly wouldn’t give up what they’d gotten him…but it still felt safer to be alone.
Besides, the warmth and weight of his packed gut was a close enough substitute for the comfort of a woman, the grip of his own callused fist a workable approximation of the tight, wet heat of a cunt. Shocking as it may be, there wasn’t a line of women out the front door of the creaky old cabin with one working sink and raccoons in the attic-but even those traits were probably a better draw than Lee himself.
It didn’t matter. He was just alright by himself-it seemed like exactly the way he was meant to be.

Also let’s not forget the fact that many “innocent” settlers were very fucking extremist, beating up and oppressing Algerians just because they can yknow, they knew their role in that society, they knew that no matter what it’d be the Algerian who pays the price, they’d have Algerians as their slaves and beat up actual kids (my grandfather was one of said victims as a child)
But noooooo, it’s the savage Algerians, and settlers are the victims
Like there was some good apples amongst them, but let’s be honest here, most of them did nothing but oppress the Algerians at the time, extremist settlers were as bad as the colonisers, they are colonisers, and that’s a fact and a hill I will die on
The good apples were rare and they have the status of moujahidine/shouhada like all Algerians who fought. The “porteurs de valises” are people who made the right choice even if they were rare. And a lot of them paid with their lives the fact that they saw themselves as Algerians not as “French Algerians”
Charles Geromini a doctor who made the rights decision said “I joined the Algerian revolution a year ago. Remembering the tension in my contact with the revolution (before joining) at the early stage I was scared I would be excluded. It didn’t happen. I was welcomed like any other Algerian. For Algerians I’m not just an ally anymore, I’m a brother, simply a brother, like all of them.” After the independence he stayed in Algeria. He had the citizenship like all Algerians. He didn’t even try to keep his French citizenship. He became a teacher in the medical institute to form the next generation of doctors in Algeria. His students respected him a lot. Unfortunately in 1993 he left like many Algerians did because of the civil war. The terrorists threatened him personally so he left (like all Algerians he had to go through the visa process and all). But he was Algerian even it was not by blood.
Yvon Bresson was a cop in Setif and he was horrified by the fact that his job consisted in protecting the settlers who had proudly slaughtered 45000 Algerians a decade before. So he helped the revolution as much as he could and was jailed for that. You know what he said? “I did all of that as an Algerian. I don’t feel like I betrayed France. I’m Algerian and like every Algerian I fought and will keep on fighting against colonialism. As a conscious Algerian citizen, my place is alongside the Algerian patriots. So that’s what I did.”
Those people were settlers but they are honored because they were willing to give up their status to be Algerians in a free Algeria and saw Algerians as their siblings.
If they wanna talk about innocent settlers I suggest we talk about Maurice Audin. France kidnapped him. Tortured him. And then they stabbed him to death that way if the body was found they could blame Algerians for his death. They hide his body and then pretended he escaped and left his wife and children behind. They refused to admit that they killed him. He was declared dead in 1963 without his body. His family, especially his widow, kept asking for justice and it’s only in 2018 that France admitted that they did kill him. I remember a couple years ago when his younger son, who was just a baby (2 months) when his father was killed, got the Algerian citizenship. He was so freaking happy he was holding his passport with a huge smile. In an interview he said “in France I’m the son of traitor in Algeria I’m the son of hero of a shahid”.
But as whole? Settlers were fucking monsters. They didn’t care about Algeria but about their privileges. They didn’t see our ancestors as humans either. The few good apples I named don’t change anything about it.

The Rules
1: unless tagged #spoilers, any novel I post will not contain plot spoilers but may contain vibe spoilers or allusion to events; I may talk about what the story is About that the dust jacket or my own synopsis may not make obvious but I won't tell you who killed somebody or a cool twist
2: I'd I post a book here it is because I finished it and liked it, OR I finished it and need to untangle why I didn't. Novels I simply don't enjoy I don't finish anymore, as a rule, but I may break it if something about it compels me to finish it. I've only had to do it twice in the last year, but both novels were so antithetical to my enjoyment that it made me actually feel mad about trying to read them.
3: I'm not gonna rate them. I don't like ratings systems, I'm not gonna try to hammer something into a number, and forcing it is just going to be dumb. I did think about making a 7 point criteria list that if a novel met it I would declare perfect, but that's too much work. Maybe in a lull of books or something I'll hammer one out. If I do, one point will be "did it contain a character wielding a sword flicking the blood from their blade before sheathing it?"
4: no rereads. I have a bad habit of returning to old books series when I have so many books that interest me that I'd like to break, so for 2024 unless I need to for something wild like a series entry I'm not expecting, no rereads.
5: There's gonna be some nonfiction in here. I've got a couple of things at the top of my to-read list that are political or social in nature, but if you're following me or reading these you probably can attune yourself to my political stances to know what's up pretty quickly. That said, I'm gonna talk about social shit occasionally even outside of those, so idk if that's a big deal but, yknow.
6: fuck it, we ball

okay actually i rewatched potd the other day and. i have so many gripes with that episode. so many. but what really got me is how like. inconsequential 13's death feels, and not inconsequential in the right way.
honestly 13's regeneration feels a LOT like 10's, but missing all of the beats that made 10's work. let me explain:
(under a cut because HOLY SHIT this got long. don't let classicists write dr who meta)
both 10's and 13's regenerations are prophesied to them. ten gets the woman in planet of the dead, carmen, who says "he will knock four times." thirteen gets the Literal Incarnation Of Time telling her, "beware of the forces that mass against you. and their master."
both their regenerations happen after a short-ish period of time, at least for a time lord. 10 regenerates after only a handful of years, a decade at most, and 13 spends the majority of her life in prison for decades. that's nothing!! 11 and 12 both had centuries.
ten cheating regeneration with tentoo and then regenerating a few episodes later anyway 🤝 thirteen cheating regeneration after being forced into being the master and then back again and then dying almost immediately after anyway
they both almost make it out!! but they don't, and it's heartbreaking!
what's different between them, to me, is their reactions to their deaths. a lot of people who don't like rtd era/ten complain about the scene where he has a breakdown before saving wilf, complaining that he's being whiny or whatever, but in my mind, he has every right to be whiny and upset. regeneration is a death, as established earlier in the episode. it's hard, starting over again and again and again, becoming someone new, especially when he's only had this body for a couple of years AND he believes his next body is his last.
yknow why he's upset in that scene? because he could just walk away. he could just let wilf take the fall, let one, inconsequential old man die, and go off and have adventures forever. but it's not a choice for him. because he's the doctor, and the doctor would never, ever take the other choice. he was always going to save wilf. there's no world in which he didn't.
but he's scared of dying. he's scared of change. he's lost everyone he's ever loved in this body, often in horrible, unchangeable ways. and it's a sad story. but it's an incredibly narratively satisfying one, because it's a culmination of ten's entire arc. he lost his way, broke all his own rules, and was punished heavily for it, but in the end, he still does the right thing, because at their core, the doctor is a good person.
there's a running theme in just about pretty much all of doctor who from 1963 onwards that every single person is important and every life matters. 9 dies to save rose, but is also prepared to die permanently to save the human race. 10 dies to save wilf. 11, after centuries of running away from responsibilities and problems, settles down to protect one town on one planet, accepting he will die for good there. 12 dies to save a handful of people on a ship--"maybe not many, maybe not for long"--accepting all of this might be for nothing, but he does it because it's the right thing to do. because it's kind. the doctor does these things, lays down their lives one right after another because they are fundamentally a kind person.
13 lets people sacrifice themselves for her. multiple times. like. four different people she BARELY knows sacrifice themselves for her (i.e. the derry girls grandpa in "the timeless children" and the one pirate guy in "legend of the sea devils"). and she LETS them. i'm not saying this as a gripe against her, but rather, the writing that doesn't consider those lives important.
people sacrifice themselves for other doctors, of course, it happens all the time. to keep using ten as an example, river is one, and that prickish kid from the sontaran episodes, but he doesn't LET them. they don't give him that choice. and when he IS given that choice, to let someone "inconsequential" die in his place, he doesn't take it.
and then the way 13 does die just feels so... nothing. the master's angry at her, so he aims a large and slow moving Beam at her, and she basically stands there while it hits her. and that's it. honestly i would have been much happier with it if they said it was a product of the forced regeneration from earlier. that would have made a lot more sense. but the whole thing with the qorunx (is that what it's called??) just feels so... last minute. like they forgot that she needed to die at the end of the episode so they just shoved something in. it feels like an afterthought.
yaz's exit feels the same way. you're telling me she fought for four years in the past to get back to the doctor, and now she's just leaving because the doctor is regenerating? it feels like yaz and the doctor both had endings because the narrative said they needed endings, not because their character arcs had come to a satisfying close.
they deserved better. yaz deserved an exit that was fair to her as a character. the doctor deserved a death that mattered. and she deserved to be more upset about her death.
she gets a little bit, just a taste, of an emotional moment: "No. No. That's not right. I need more time. I want more time!", before immediately accepting her death and coming to terms with it. "And I have loved being me," she says. but me, as a viewer who cares about characterization and storytelling, asks, "have you?"
because 13 spent more time of this life IN PRISON than out of it. her life outside was never easy, either, she rarely got moments of true happiness. hell, in this regeneration, she found out her entire life was a lie!
...but she loved being her?
i think 13 should have gotten to be angry and upset that she wasn't given those moments of peace or happiness. she didn't get a lot of time being her, and the time she did get was fraught and difficult and painful. she should have gotten to be upset about not having more time for more than 0.2 seconds. she should have been allowed to be afraid of dying. or at least upset about dying.
i don't know. i don't know if this post is at all coherent but i'm just really disappointed in potd and my rewatch really cemented that. it didn't have the emotional resonance that i wish it did. it felt rushed, overstuffed, and, much like the rest of chibnall era, not well thought out.
#obligatory disclaimer that me criticizing chibnall is not me saying i think rtd or moffat are perfect#because they are most certainly not#but their writing resonates with me emotionally much more and i like examining why#doctor who#doctor who meta#power of the doctor#doctor who crit#meta

yknow what my friend and i talked about today??? they did an entire season in 1963, with like,,, 2.5 plotlines focused around injustice/discrimination/etc..... without saying a slur. yeah they said queer, but if anything it was to demonstrate how that word has been reclaimed. they didnt say f*g, they didnt say the n-word, when in reality those words most likely wouldve been thrown around like nothing in the situations depicted.
thats how easy it is lmao. they managed to accurately depict these characters in ACTUAL HISTORICAL SITUATIONS and did so without using slurs to make their point. it’s just amazing to me because all three of those confrontation scenes were impactful and meaningful anyways without it.
#the umbrella academy#tua#tua s2#tua season two#allison hargreeves#klaus hargreeves#vanya hargreeves#klaus x dave#tw slurs#i think? i just figured i would add it#i just love the way it was approached and i thought i would put it out there!!#forgive me if someone else posted about this already#i havent seen it!#my stuff

so like. is spiderman's suit red and blue, or red and black. because everything outside of comics throughout my entire life of spiderman pop culture stuff, has led me to believe it is red and blue. but then i started reading amazing spiderman 1963 and, yknow, the old comics style shades black objects with blue, but it also shades all objects with black. so for the entire past like, almost year, i've been going back and forth trying to determine the exact ratio of black and blue that leans me towards "its blue with black shading" or "its black with blue shading" and for the most part i decided on its blue with black shading BUT THEN certain panels like these get to me and its like well what is the truth !!!!
#frankly i kinda like it red and black instead but alas#ive also compared the way hes drawn to venom#bc venom is obviously black with blue shading#and ive been trying to decide what makes it so obvious for venom but not for spidey#the blue is a slightly different shade for both of them so thats what led me to conclude that venom is black with blue shading#and spidey is like. genuinely blue. since its a different shade than the blue used for shading black#and also venoms blue for shading occurs in smaller patches than spideys blue#which again led me to believe that for venom the blue is shading but for spiderman its genuinely blue#SO FOR A WHILE ive been mostly decided that yes. its blue. his suit is red and blue#but then these panels come out of nowhere and knock my confidence to the ground again LIKE SO IS IT ACTUALLY BLACK ???#brot reads marvel comics#amazing spiderman (1963) 260

"The seconds fly by as the Fabulous Xavier..." - Uncanny X-Men Annual One (1963)
Xavier is so gay (well bi but yknow) even the text says so (yeah yeah I know it was the sixties so calling a man fabulous doesn't have the same connotations but I still think it's funny)
Scott's in the corner being all: "They (the Avengers) make me realize that humanity is worth defending" and I'm like no, Scott, save us all the trouble of idolizing the Avengers because it ain't gonna end well. I can see the future alright.
Also, as far as I know all the avengers are adults? including giant-man (aka Hank Pym) and Janet too? so why is Wasp trying to make Hank serious by flirting with some teenage boy? who'd get jealous cause of that? okay, fine, she technically wasn't outright flirting but look it's a weird thing to put in?? must have been the 60s? like the text explicitly paints all the members of X-Men as teenagers and even has the Avengers refer to them as such? with like the sole exception being Beast?
Wasp verbally: "It wasn't all a waste! I did get to meet that dreamy Angel!"
Wasp internally: Aww, I'm wasting my time--as usual! Hank is too smart to act jealous!
#uncanny xmen 1963#uncanny xmen annual one#I guess its a 60s thing?#lol scott fan-boying over the avengers will never not be funny to me#good news is like half of the stuff gets retconned so we can ignore the weird implications and chalk it up to writing mistakes#hopefully#x-men comics#xmen comics

Why is everyone so sure Allison is the center of s3? Yes she lost a lot, but so did Vanya and Klaus for example.
Well… I mean I’m not in other peoples’ heads so I couldn’t say for sure, but from my observations there are a few things going on. For one thing, there’s just her fans manifesting what they want. Like I mean that’s one post I actually saw, someone saying that season 3 would be about Allison and then they said they were manifesting it. And, yknow, that’s what we do as fans. I am manifesting some Dave and Klave content myself. There’s also the fact that this is season 3 and Allison is Number 3, although that’s not a pattern we’ve seen with Luther and Diego. But then there is the interesting pattern of each sibling being obsessed over a thing - Luther with the moon in season 1, Diego with JFK in season 2, and now Allison in season 3 (and Klaus with Dave in season 4 let me manifest…). It was kind of more of a meme with Luther I think, so I don’t know if it really is as much of a pattern as people think, but for Allison in season 3 and the obvious choice of her obsession being Claire, I really think everyone is onto something with this one and I talked about it in my previous ask.
I think it is high time they delve into Allison’s relationship with Claire. I think they really set up something interesting with that in season 1 and they didn’t really get to explore it in season 2, and I think even in season 3 they might not really get to delve into it because Claire will probably be more of an illusive goal because she doesn’t exist in this timeline but I’m sure we’ll have plenty of seasons to do this so let’s buckle in and GO. I think it makes a LOT a lot of sense for Claire to be the goal for the siblings if they don’t have an apocalypse this season to motivate them, and I think it makes a lot of sense for Allison to take over Five’s role as the plot driver, and I think it makes a lot of sense and would be so so heartwarming for all the siblings to band together to save their niece, especially now that they have really managed to come together as a family and be on such good terms with each other in season 2. I just have a lot of feelings about it and I think it’s the next logical step. I think it’s the only thing that would motivate them really because I don’t see anything else motivating them.
I mean yes you say that Vanya and Klaus have lost a lot, and they have, but that’s not really fixable. Vanya and Sissy ended things on good terms and there’s nothing that really needs to be changed about that. I do think Harlan is coming back for sure and I have no idea what form that will take but I don’t think that Vanya will need to change the timeline for him. And of course Klaus losing Dave will be a thing and I think we’re definitely meeting a new version of Dave in season 3 who is the product of Klaus’ 1963 interference, but like… fixing the timeline isn’t going to fix that, because in the original timeline Dave still died. I do think that Klaus is always going to try to save Dave, but I think that’s going to be his own personal plot and he’s not really going to involve the siblings in that. At least that’s what we saw in season 2.
And then there’s Ben like whoa boy I do NOT know what they’re planning with Ben. Will they want to keep him? Will he want to be kept? Will they ever be able to see him as his own individual self and not just their brother but different? I really hope they had a plan with that when they wrote it and it wasn’t just a shock value thing they did for season 2 and now they’re stuck trying to retrofit something to do with it, cause I can see that being very unsatisfying. And I don’t know what would be satisfying. I don’t know, you guys, I have zero theories about Ben,I am coming up completely empty on anything they could possibly actually do. I don’t know, he’s gotta factor in somehow… And in a big way for Klaus as well… So I guess Ben and Klaus will be at the forefront as well, and it makes a lot of sense because Klaus is a very popular character and Klaus and Ben’s dynamic is very popular. Idk I think I’ve gone off track from the ask now I was just following the line of thought from Vanya and Klaus having lost a lot and then when I got to Ben as something that Klaus had lost I just needed to recalibrate because I really don’t know what they’re planning for Ben but I do think that Ben and Klaus will be a big thing in season 3 as well.

OK so susan is like. a normal gallifreyan. she isn’t a ‘time lord’. iirc. she’s also not the doctor’s “actual” granddaughter to my knowledge. from that we can establishe that the first doctor is probably old on purpose despite being “young” to keep up the granddaughter & grandfather thing while they’re on earth. BUT. BUT. Here is my. Thing. Im thinking about. right so like. they say they came there in 1963 iirc BUT in one ep Barbara asks the Doctor if he remembers the blitz. The Doctor says he does. you could say he was lying since yknow, he’s a liar, but it makes no sense in this context because he hasn’t lied about inconsequential shit like this to them at this point just stuff that could easily get them killed. meaning the Doctor & Susan have been on Earth for at LEAST twenty years by 1963. we know gallifreyans stay teenagers for decades. how long has she been in secondary school. HOW many times has she done year 9. or was this a recent thing and they’d just been kind of fucking around until the 60s when susan decided she wanted to go to secondary school. barbara and ian follow her home because she was so weird and only knew about science so i guess they were just. fucking around in a junkyard for two decades? this has been in my brain for like four days
