Aaaaaahhh hello anon and omg omg thank you T^T I'm genuinely so happy you enjoy the inspo photos! I have to admit, reblogging them is one of my favourite things xD

While Kald at this point is located in a Germanic-Europe setting, it also has quite a Hizurean population, so there's a lot of influence of Hizuru/Asian culture and tradition - and by that you know it's a very wide category. There's also swiss tradition, finnish names, Icelandic names... a LOT! Making it a melting pot of a lot of cultures from around the world is not only convenient but also very interesting haha xD

That said, yes, I do have favourites! The very first idea of Kald came to me after gazing longingly (for the millionth time) of a photo of Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland. Here's a video that inspired exactly the path leading to the meadows, the lake, the cottages beyond, and the mountains (also the dog xD She's important!). Here's another!

The cottages (ie Liberio refugee settlement) were inspired by the village of Shirakawa in Gifu pref., Japan. Here's my favourite inspo for that.

The winding paths of the village in Kald are also inspired by these old places in Japan: Higashiyama (Kyoto), Kiso Valley (Nagano), Kibune (Kyoto). You can see exactly where the description of the paved street and densely packed old shops comes from hahaha xD In winter ofc, they look like this, and this, and this.

I don't really agree that most of his politics were terrible haha, even though virtually all nationalists of the time (who indeed were not all antisemites and reactionaries, even if most were lol) probably thought so - and while we can criticise his patronising imperialist attitude today, I wouldn't really assume that there was much good faith criticism floating around back then... like, even if/when there was criticism of him, it's more than likely that there were elements of reactionaryism and antisemitism mixed in because of how nationalism worked at the time. I get that Hamann might not argue it this way but it's what I believe (partly based on my familiarity w contemporary newspaper discourses)

I don't really understand what you mean 😅 I think Hamann only calls out antisemitism when antisemitism is occurring, and her commentary regarding the rise of violent nationalism at the end of the 19th century (and Rudolf's hopeless position in resisting it) is super apt and also, like, the #1 reason I care about Rudolf at all....... in general I consider Hamann's Rudolf bio one of the key texts of Rudolf scholarship, and am a pretty uncritical stan of it. If anything, the only flaw in her work is that she's too mean about Elisabeth :'D

I've just read the entirety of the head above water series over the course of the past day (wildly irresponsible, totally worth it) and I must say, I ADORE this universe. I love your Matthew and your Leon (so stupid, so emotionally constipated, so bad at communication and reading each other), and Quinn! Poor Quinn! I feel for this Victorian ghost child, haunted by the horrors (and pining) in every universe. I'm sure Brady will come around eventually. Probably. (I'm also loving the idea of Keith scheming for how to get Matthew and Leon on the same team, putting his experience and desire to be a part of his kids' careers to good use XD) Anyway, thank you for writing, time to reread!

awww thank you so much, anon! i'm so glad you enjoyed it! i feel a little weird posting this instead of just keeping it for myself but also i hoard nice comments like a dragon and i know if i leave it in my inbox i'll accidentally delete it or something. and that would be terrible ❤

i have barely had the time or energy to write at all this month so instead of doing that i have just been THINKING a lot, and while THINKING is of course a very important part of the writing process, it is not nearly as satisfying as putting words on the page. but specifically since people have been leaving really nice comments about the HAW anniversary ficlet i've been thinking a lot about that universe and i AM full of feelings about it. so i'm going to babble a little.

because like, obviously, the HAW is a fully separate timeline from the real world at this point. real world florida!matthew and HAW!matthew are totally different entities, not in small part because florida!matthew has a nice finnish boyfriend and several drops of serotonin. this means that continuing to write in the HAW universe means basically making up the whole future as i go, which isn't a problem — it's fun and also kind of nice being freed from the tethers of reality that i was basically ignoring anyway — but it also means that i can kind of pick and choose stuff from the real world to incorporate or not. which is all to say that in the HAW!verse, quinn definitely does still get named captain of the canucks, and feels a lot of things about his and brady's matching Cs, but also feels relieved in a way to have something so tangible to pour his future into that is not brady-shaped at all.

i touched on this in the replies to some comments on the anniversary ficlet already, but i really enjoyed writing keith in that because in HAW matthew's relationship with keith is kind of complicated and strained (his relationships with everyone are strained, lbr) in ways that i think are honestly pretty normal for a father-son relationship to be complicated even in a loving family, but the complications are so exacerbated by the headspace matthew is in. it was really nice in the ficlet to just get to be like, and here is keith loving his kid. i have a little headcanon that keith had some not-quite-out-but-not-quite-closeted teammates during his nhl days and at the time felt kind of weird about it, and it wasn't until matthew came out that he ever took the time to think about his own reaction and how he could be better/more helpful/more supportive than he was in the past. extremely typical "well this is affecting me directly now so i guess i need to think about it" reaction lmao. but he loves his kid. one day far in the future when the matthew/leon relationship is public knowledge he's going to say some very earnest things to the media about it, which matthew will find so embarrassing.

the thing is (and i think i also said this in response to a comment) that, yes, HAW was full of emotional turmoil and all that, but in my heart i am very much that austen quote about happy endings — "my characters shall have, after a little trouble, all that they desire." HAW!matthew and leon get to live happily ever after now. they will for sure have some bumps along the way but they did their time in the angst pit and now their problems will all be minor in the scheme of things.

... unless i think of some new horrors i want to put them through. but i don't foresee that happening right now. 😂 (that doesn't mean i won't continue to play in this universe, though, i love this universe.)

Finnish is one of my favourite languages! It's so unique and pretty and silly. I'm trying to learn it but man is it vaikea. When do you use paritive case? Yes.

It is very unique and silly, so unique that I'm bad at explaining it even though it's my mothertongue xD

I guess the first thing that comes to mind is that after numbers you always use partitive (Even after 0) except after 1 (Always gotta be one exception, can't keep things too simple XD )

Ex. Zero cats / Nolla kissaa and One cat / Yksi kissa

Oh, also always after words that express quantity.

Ex. A cup of coffee / Kuppi kahvia

Yeah probably not any help if you're already learning it, but I never had the best grades in finnish 😅(Well okay I'm completely exaggerating, I have had completely fine grades, I'm just bad at explaining things)

Hello! I hope this isn't overstepping but I was wondering if you could help me out with something regarding the Finnish language.

Is jylhä a valid word to use by itself in order to describe something beautiful/majestic in a rough way? (The English Wikipedia article for a Korpiklaani album with that title says it is, but I figured I should try to find out some more context).

Is it one of those words with a whole philosophy behind it, the way some Japanese terms like wabi-sabi are sometimes imported in order to describe something that other cultures don't typically have a single word for?

I'm not using it in a sentence or anything, but I was wondering if, for example, one could get a tattoo of the word without it suddenly meaning something like "chicken soup" without proper context. Thanks in advance!

"Jylhä" is a word that's not used so much nowadays. I don't know why, but it's not too common today, so it has an old sound to it, and I associate it with describing hills and mountains etc.

A Finnish dictionary site online offers this as an English explanation for the word "jylhä": "Imposing with greatness, austerity, or gloominess; awe-inspiring, majestic.

(qualifier) rugged, rocky, mountainous."

You could use "jylhä," as I can't think of any other word that would mean the same thing. I can only think of multiple word descriptions like "karu ja/mutta kaunis" so "rough and/or beautiful" etc. so yes, it describes beautiful/majestic things in a rough way.

I don't see a problem with someone getting a tattoo of the word . It is cool, although not too common anymore, but if it has a meaning to the person, it shouldn't matter. As a Finnish person it would be maybe a bit odd to see a random adjective tattooed onto someone, but it could be an interesting conversation starter.

Feel free to ask more if you need to, and sorry if this isn't easily understandable, as I'm not too good with english and I woke up not too long ago so my brain is still a bit sleepy xd

1. What is your current favourite musical, and is it different from what it was at the end of last year?

Ahhhh it's so hard to pick :D I think objectively (how insane the themes make me and have made me for a long time) it's probably TdV, but right now (3:28 am on December 28th) it's LOTR because I've been listening to it on loop for like 2 weeks ajsjfjhk. Like it's kinda flawed but I love the music so much and it's giving me major nostalgic feels. Last December I think it was Elisabeth (or maybe TdV tbh, that one's hard to displace) but I think Elisabeth is maybe my 3rd favourite now so there's not a huge change :D

5. Did you see any live musicals this year? What did you think of them?

Yess, I saw a whole bunch of them!! Highlights include Rebecca (Vienna), Cabaret (Finland), Evita (Germany), Wicked (London) & Les Mis (London). I really liked Cabaret and Evita (both were staged in innovative ways), had fun and appreciated the casts at Wicked and Rebecca (both were staged in uninnovative ways XD) (ahdhgjgj half joking), but Les Mis kinda sucked (I couldn't see anything because I had a cheap balcony seat and a guy with a big head sat in front of me) ajdjgj. But the cast there was amazing so it's not like it was a complete waste!!!

In total I must've seen like 20+ pieces of live theatre ahsjjf, but some of it I can't reveal here because I'm not open online about where I'm living in Germany. I'm really hyped to be living there, though, because good and speedy train connections are making next year seem very very promising!!!

15. Infodump to me about a musical!

Oooh idk which one... :D Maybe something I haven't talked about on this blog a lot before but I really enjoy: The Lord of the Rings (2006/2007/2023)!!

I first listened to this one in like 2017, because I liked the books/movies and discovered that it existed. Mostly I played Lothlorien on loop because it's an amazing song and there's an actual proshot video of it on youtube and Laura Michelle Kelly as Galadriel is really sparkly and pretty. Then I listened to the rest of the album and the music is just great all over!!! It's done by AR Rahman (composer, multi-instrumentalist, winner of a million awards for film soundtracks mostly in Indian cinema), Värttinä (Finnish folk band - most famously creators of Ievan polkka) and Christopher Nightingale (don't know much about him ahdhf). The Finnish folk influence is especially audible in the songs of the elves, they have real ancient cattle call vibes sometimes (in a good way xD). But my favourite songs are actually the more story-based and cinematic ones that I'm drawn to attribute to Rahman, as well as the soaring instrumental sections. So I would rank my fave songs (yes, all of them are favourites):

The show is flawed, like I mentioned before; for someone who doesn't know the story from the LOTR books or movies it would get confusing pretty quickly, and because of the size of the cast it's hard to get insight into many of them in such a limited timespan (Boromir and the elves other than Arwen and Galadriel fall especially flat). But I love the music soooo much and I'm so excited that it was produced again in 2023, and in such a cozy and compact way too (it was done in a 200-seat theatre with an actor-musician cast as a semi-immersive production). The London cast recording is on Spotify, everyone should listen to it!

Yes, I think that a lot of people would benefit from just having, even if only one person, with whom the could really talk to and get those thoughts and concerns out. Talking with people helps. And I'm glad that you found comfort and help from what I said 🥰 They're things that I have learned and had to realize in the course of my academic career/journey, and they really helped me too

Uni is treating as uni does 😅 I have a couple of more difficult exams coming up in the start of the week, but I haven't got around to stressing about them XD

I think that Finland is a, at least relatively, good place to study. English is widely used so you'd be able to get around with it, and not necessarily need to learn Finnish. Education is free, though I'm not sure about international programmes or how does it work for international students, but generally speaking education is made affordable from what I know. There's large student communities and larger student cities have a lot of events happening weekly. There's no "campus life" per se, but there's student life in the city.

Usually the undergrad programmes Finns study are studied in the Universities of Applied Sciences, and having started there, I would say that it's pretty good. Communication could flow better at times, but I think it's like that in a lot of places. I haven't heard complaints really, but I'm also currently an international student myself studying abroad, for personal reasons, so I'm unable to just catch up with an international student studying in Finland ^^'

Saw your tags! I listen to a whole bunch of music in French, mostly from Canada, cause well it's what I come from. My top played French song is Dégénérations by Mes Aïeux (I tried to recreate it on My Singing Monsters once so I listened to it on repeat a lot lol.) I have one singular song in Italian on my phone, L'italiano by Toto Cutungo, and apparently I've played it a lot. And Deutschland by Rammstein was my 100th most played song! I was surprised that Spanish didn't show up in my most played cause I do have a few on my phone, but I think I've downloaded most of them recently so their play count is still lower than other songs I've had for longer.

My german song is "Rom" by Dschinghis Khan ksksksks it sounds so dramatic and epic and oh my I'm SO glad I found that one again bc hell yes it's fucking long but it also changes so much!!! And it tells about the story of Rome and the dramaaaaaa XD
