Real, it's all bc of tomato sauce. One day a bunch of Italians found out an entire batch of sauce which was going to expire soon and said "oh lol looks like blood" and started making horror films. Then they found out spaghetti looked like entrails and thus the cannibal movie genre was born 😔
what caused italians to make all those gory movies in the 70s and 80s
#wren text tag#but yes Italian horror movies from 70s-80s were absolutely bloody hell gory#OP is probably referring to Cannibal Holocaust (1980 directed by Ruggero Deodato) which is the most famous and controversial#it was banned in a lot of countries (and still is) and the director was even forced to appear in court because of the violence in it#like there are a LOT of genuine animal slayings#btw did you know that this film is one of the first uses of Found Footage in a complex long story of horror genre?#however this technique will become famous much later with The Blair Witch Project#other famous movies are Suspiria (1977 directed by Dario Argento)#and A Bay of Blood (1971 directed by Mario Bava)#if I had to give my opinion on why they were so gory#I suppose it's both because Italy was still recovering from Fascism and WW2#and the decade 1870-1980 was mostly remembered as “Years of Lead” (Anni di Piombo)#the period of political violence and terrorism caused by radical armed groups (example: Brigate Rosse)#also the 70s have been a generalized period of economic and energetic crisis#there was also the Cold War going on but the Years of Lead were much more felt by Italians
