miss raven, i must ask:
what is your opinion on the overblot monsters as a hear me out👀❓
I wasn't sure if this anon meant the Phantom designs or the OB designs themselves when they said "overblot monsters", so I decided to go ahead and drop my opinions on both things. (And if you want my opinion on the non-OB boys and non-OB boys' Phantoms... they're okay? I have no particular commentary to impart on those.)
My personal Phantoms ranking:
My favorite Phantom design is, hands down, Idias. I love how it is composed of shapes that closely resemble the style of the Hercules film, notably the arms and fingers. The collar and head resemble a flaring flame while the wrists seem to resemble Greek columns. But the detail I love the most is how the Phantom's arms and body seem to be made of other Phantoms' busted heads. It's really clever visual storytelling, as this tells us about how Ortho lived in Tartarus with the other Phantoms, how he wants them all to be 'friends' with Idia and the rest of the world, etc. This Phantom in of itself just has so much story significance and even seems to be alluded that the multitude of Phantoms in Tartarus yoink Idia (seen at the end of the Ignihyde CM). This Phantom also has a special physical connection to the OB boy in its design; Idia it literally hooked up to his Phantom with wires, symbolizing his close connection to it. (I didn't see something similar in the other Phantoms, but I do know in the light novel Leona is said to be attached to his Phantom by a blot chain on his ankle.)
I find the designs of Riddle, Azul, and Jamil’s Phantoms cool. They resemble their Disney inspirations, but have one or two flairs that make the designs their own. Riddle's Phantom has spade-shaped spikes protruding from its back and wields a rose tree like a hammer to deliver twisted justice. Azul's Phantom has a crown and trident, which is reminiscent of Ursula once she has robbed them from King Triton. It also has a collar that looks like coral branches jutting out and I enjoy how the ink looks like it is dripping down and forming the tentacles. Finally, Jamil's Phantom is inspired by Jafar's genie form on the torso but its lower half becomes coiled, patterned, and snake-like (like the viper form Jafar takes on when fighting Aladdin). It also has a collar unique to it.
I'm slightly disappointed with the Phantoms of Leona, Vil, and Malleus. These literally just look like the original Disney villains that they are trying to emulate, but with very few changes made to them outside of the stitches and the shape of the glass bottle heads. I do like that Vil's Phantom is the hag version of the Evil Queen (which demonstrates her inner ugliness) and how Malleus's phantom is Maleficent's dragon form (which is just cooler overall) with more exaggerated spines, but this doesn't change the fact that the designs aren't that special.
My personal OB design ranking:
I think Leona and Idia’s designs look cool for the most part.
Pretty much the only thing I dislike about Leona’s is the bare feet, which are easily ignored since the game usually only shows us the torso up. Everything else is gucci o3o)bb Slicked back hair, check! corset that calls attention to his Dorito chip shaped-body, check! The jewelry and extra stuff tied around his waist isn't too cluttered or in the way and coordinates well color-wise. Ah, also... AND I KNOW NONW OF YOU PEOPLE WILL BELIEVE ME BUT I FEEL LIKE I AHVE TO STATE THIS FOR MY OWN SANITY. I didn't realize he was shirtless for a long ass time 😭 I JUST THOGUHT THAT MANE WAS A FLUFFY SHIRT OR CROP TOP OR SOMETHING... I know the truth now, and (at the cost of sounding like Rollo) I'm thankful that the mane exists to cover up Leona's bare chest because I do NOT wanna see that out and about.
Idia has the most "different" vibes to his design, and I have to commend him for that. He looks like some futuristic gremlin come to destroy us all, especially when his electronic mask thing simulates new expressions for him. It's neat how the new armor he's equipped with sharpens his features so he, like his Phantom, more closely resembles the art style of Hercules, and there's just enough blue to balance out the black (and same with the orange-red when he gets mad). My favorite part of OB Idia has to be the lower half; it forms a cool vortex that makes me think of the lost souls swirling around in Tartarus.
I like Riddle’s well enough, but I think it’s less of me actually enjoying the look altogether and more of me having nostalgia for it + liking the Alice in Wonderland details in it. I love the ink webbing (especially in the face and its accessories), the gradient flowers decorating his hips, and the cards spilling out. However, I will admit that the design is very busy and chaotic for the head and the lower half (and maybe that was intentional), so it's hard for my eyes to know what to focus on whenever I see OB Riddle.
Azul, Vil, and Malleus are trying but look sort of awkward in several areas:
I like the shoulders and face for Azul, but below that is all downhill; I've never been a fan of his merform, and that really comes through here. The bottom half just looks kinda unadorned (which makes sense; clothing would limit his mobility). Still... it makes most of him look really uninteresting. Not only that, but his tentacles look wrong (though this is an issue with his general merform and not specifically the OB). They're way too short and the shape and size of them makes me think of inflatable mascots outside of used car dealerships.
I appreciate that Vil's OB design gives the vibes of him wandering into an abandoned castle and fastening together an outfit from a tattered curtain, but the end result is... lacking. The halo crown looks super heavy and impractical, the chest looks sort of bland compared to everything else, the waist has these really out of place protruding... spike... things???? And then there's the slapped-on looking peacock feathers on his legs and the odd feathers to blot textured cloak.
I like all the briar incorporated into Malleus’s OB even if the details are drowned out by the excessive black, but I’m not a fan of the neon green on his horns and tail. Malleus’s most focal points—his face and chest—also look kinda weird to me?? Normally I like slicked back hair, but it looks odd and almost balding on this character. The green/green-grey color of his skin is also unflattering and makes him look like a moldy cabbage.
Jamil and Grim (?) are very confused and unappealing.
In all honesty, the individual pieces of the outfit are okay?? I like the gold accessories + how the veil the skirt flares out. The recurring diamond patterns are are an interesting way to incorporate “scales” without having actual snakeskin. The literal snake hair has potential to be cute, but I hate Hate HATE how it’s styled as a turban (poor sentient hair snakes are probably all twisted up) and the little ink goatee 💀 Combined with everything else, he is way too over-designed no matter where you look. At least everyone else has their detailed elements better spread out… I think it might have looked better if it had like 1-2 less detailed elements and eradicate the goatee.
Grim (?) is a random mishmash of traits from the other OB boys. And it looks bad (even if the point is for nothing in the design to go together well). The worst part is the humanish front legs. No further comment.

Inventory + Minish Link wip
I’m kinda lazy when it comes to drawing gear or swords so I decided to do this diagram (can I call it that way?) primarily for the swords. It's a way for me to visually keep track of their equipment—and now you can too!
Minish and Sky are the only ones who don’t carry a weapon, as they were both living peaceful lives after their adventures. Sky left the Master Sword in its pedestal, and Minish did the same with the Four Sword, however both blades, centuries later, eventually ended up in the hands of Four and Wild.
As for the Master Sword, all Links who wielded it previously returned it to its pedestal at the end of their journey (or, in one case cof cof, it was lost at the bottom of the sea). That’s why none of the other Links are carrying it at this point, this also helps avoid any continuity issues.
Clarification:
I’m still debating whether to give Wind a special sword. Considering the ending of Phantom Hourglass, it’s possible he kept the sword from that game, though it wouldn’t have any time-related properties anymore.
When it comes to shields, not all of them were lucky enough to be carrying one at the moment they were pulled into Wild’s present timeline.
They won’t have all their items with them because some were temporary or situational, and it wouldn’t make sense for them to carry them in their daily lives. However, Time, Wind, Worlds, Warriors, and Hyrule still carry most of their items, as they continue to live a lifestyle where those objects are useful.
Four is a special case. In order for him to carry the Four Sword in this comic, he was pulled from his timeline right after defeating Ganon and Vaati. He hadn’t even placed the sword back in its pedestal when he suddenly found himself with the others, so he still has all his items with him.💀 (You are in the building again honey)
Legend also wields most of his gear, though not because he still seeks adventure, on the contrary, he didn’t want to join another one anytime soon.
The image is more of a personal crappy reference I made with key items. If I included all of their gear, I’d run out of space, lol. So, this is more of an approximation, Yup.
super important: Minish carries with him bread
super important two: Yes, Time has many, many masks.
Super important three: Worlds has a fcking ton of clothes.
my favorite boy wip, thanks for reading.

Do witches age more slowly than humans? Eda and Stan being together at some point suggests she’s in her 50s at minimum, more likely 60s (in human years, idk exactly how Demon Realm time works). The curse ages her faster, but visually she still comes off as 40s or pretty good 50s. Obviously looks don’t determine age, but Bump, Del, and Gwen all being so physically active in what is likely their 80s suggests that they probably age more slowly than humans.
This also has an interesting implication, as she would’ve been alive before Belos came to power, possibly even before the institution of the coven system (or at least its enforcement).
Side note, but it sucks how Raeda doesn’t seem to get as much love from the fandom. I hope that doesn’t mean you’ll stop doing art of them, because they’re absolutely one of my favorite pairs. Older queer characters are something that’s desperately needed in media, and I think Raeda does it quite well.
I was wondered that too once but from the epilogue it looks like Luz's friends aged the same time as her, so I think witches probably age normally, but are more resilient than humans.
Also Eda is actually in her early 40's as confirmed by Dana, so she was not around when Belos first took control.

RAMMSTEIN - Teacher AU: what subject they teach
Okay… I know some of this isn’t very realistic, especially as this takes an American perspective on school. But…
I do what I want lmao
BUT Rammstein as teachers has been infecting my brain for a fat minute now. Ever since I read this one fic on ao3 I’ve been dying. I needed to get this out. And lord knows I have more to say than just this one little imagine post. So if you’re interested, PLEASE let me know. I won’t shut up about it then.
TILL LINDEMANN - Vocational Education
Teaches woodworking, metals, and automotive technology. He does it all so classes are pretty sparse. And hard to get into…
He likes the idea that the kids who are seeking out his classes are the ones who are truly interested in the subject. Especially since his classes are decently difficult to get into.
And honestly being a more specialized teacher, he has more freedom to do as he wishes when it comes to the syllabus and activities done in the classroom.
I mean who else in the school is going to know what to teach in that position besides him?
No one.
So he does as he wants!
He definitely holds extra workshops during his free period or before/after school.
PAUL LANDERS - Band/ Orchestra
He has the degree to teach all sorts of performing arts but he really embraced teaching band and orchestra. He’s always been a music guy.
Very supportive to his students! Always making sure they find the right instrument to play if they’re just starting out.
Or showing them different pieces or artists to keep students engaged and exploring music!
One of the more eccentric teachers of the bunch.
But because of that the students absolutely LOVE him. Like they beg to sit in the band room to eat lunch. (Which is against the rules) but he agrees anyways.
Also sponsors the fall play and spring musical with Flake and Richard. Mainly in charge of the music and band, but definitely helps Richard with the casting and auditions.
CHRISTOPH SCHNEIDER - History/ Social Studies
Rigid exterior, soft when you get through to him. Students either love or hate him. NO in between.
He prefers to teach AP European history, AP World history, or AP Psychology. He likes it when the students are actually there because they’re interested, not because the class is required.
Like I said before, students either love or hate him. So they either avoid him like the plague or they follow him like a cult.
Honestly, he likes his alone time, so he’ll 100% lock his door during lunch time so none of the students who enjoy him will bother him.
Hands out a shit ton of homework.
Also has no patience or sympathy for troublemakers. He looks like he got two hours of sleep the night before, don’t test him.
FLAKE LORENZ - Visual Arts
Teaches basic arts classes like 2D arts, and 3D arts. But he also delves into the more complex classes like AP drawing/painting, advanced ceramics, and AP art history.
He likes each class for its own reasons, but his favorite is advanced ceramics. He loves the freedom and loves seeing all the interesting designs and pieces the students make.
Also, just like Schneider and Till, he likes that the classes besides basic 2D and 3D arts are sought after because the students actually take interest in the subject matter
Definitely the kind of teacher who fosters a calm environment. Students are allowed to wear headphones but no music playing out in the open.
More often than not sits beside his students and works on pieces of his own!
He also works closely with Paul and Richard when it comes to the school plays and musicals. He helps make backdrops and props. Definitely groans and moans about it, but in the end he loves seeing his work on the stage. Even if it’s on an incredibly amateur level.
RICHARD KRUSPE - Language arts and English
Teaches English language classes, advanced creative writing, speech, and AP literature and composition. Yeah he forced some other unlucky teacher to take on the basic creative writing classes.
He didn’t want to deal with the dumb brats who can’t write or spell. Fuck them kids.
He enjoys speech and English the most, he definitely likes the way the kids squirm when they’re forced to stand up front and speak.
Not a big fan of homework. He honestly neglects grading so he just makes it easy and gives out a one page worksheet, nothing crazy.
Helps with casting and oversight with the students in the plays and musicals. He enjoys helping with lines and memorization!
OLIVER RIEDEL - Buisness/ Computer classes
Teaches intro to business, personal finance, AP business management, and typing/basic computer applications.
He likes that it’s decently laid back. That if there’s a problem, there’s always an answer. Press the “A” key and “A” will appear. You know?
Questions in his class are pretty self explanatory and the guides he gives for the students to work through, aren’t too hard at all.
It’s decently hard to not pass his class.
I mean… shit… there’s no homework. None.
He’s pretty reserved, so it’s not often students talk to him for anything besides questions. Which for the most part he doesn’t mind. But when there’s that one rare student who actually gives a shit about how his day is going, it definitely makes him smile.

i can excuse electing yourself the mayor but i draw the line at appointing yourself the judge
(page 1100-1115 and somehow, 743)
This update is our first chance to command the Aimless Renegade! They feel like the anti-hero of a Western, the sole dispenser of vigilante justice in a lawless society. Their caution tape wrappings is the coolest thing about them in my opinion, as the ‘cop, judge, jury and executioner’ act is neither as unique nor as commendable as PM’s mail association. WV and PM both see it as their duty to help others and foster community and connection, while AR, even when prompted to ‘befriend the unwelcome rogues’, is all about violence, suspicion and putting up barriers. This contrast makes them an effective antagonist, as do their similarities to real cops.
Within the illegal pictography, I‘m seeing the outline of the frog head on top of the mystic ruins, the floating lilies n the lake, and the Sburb spirograph. There’s also a few creatures we haven’t seen before – a long nosed lizard, a spiky lizard, and a turtle – and one rune that could be a castle or a squatting frog. I wonder if this is all wildlife native to Jade’s island? It’s referred to as ‘hieroglyphs,’ so is this a message? If the ruins are from Skaia, will Jade be able to decode this message through her visions? This could explain why AR doesn’t like the symbols, if this is the language of the opposing side.
WV I think is originally from the dark kingdom, but has renounced that affiliation by turnng aganst the monarch. PM is originally from the light kingdom, but has also turned against them by taking up the dark sword. AR is from the dark kingdom and appears to still be enforcing their laws, suggesting a continued affiliation despite his name. So will there be a fourth member of this group who’s still part of the light?
AND putting together their associations with the kids, WV is able to command John, and came from Rose’s location (John’s server player). PM is able to command Jade, and came from John’s location (this might mean that John ends up being Jade’s server player, somehow???). I think that AR comes from Jade’s location, because there’s no third bunker visible, and WV and PM’s bunkers have landed perfectly evenly from the mystic ruins – and perfectly within AR’s caution tape (p.1108). So I think we’re expecting a third bunker in the front corner, immediately opposite the ruins, who came from Dave’s location. They could be here any moment. So down the elevator into the ruins, is it possible AR will find a way to control Rose or Dave?
AR’s tape perfectly mapping out the area where the group meets reminded me of WV’s ‘uncanny knack for tracking precise distances [he] ha[s] already traversed’ (p.743) which just finally clicked for me. WV is a chess piece construct and he has an innate sense of how far One Square is, and he’s just converting all other measurements into that like in the image below. All the future folks have apparently been programmed with impressive spatial awareness.
I gotta say these pages of AR inside the ruins are not my favorites visually. They feel busy, with too much going on and not enough cohesion, and the stuck elevator is more distracting to me than most Homestuck gifs. But despite that, this section is a great example of reader commands at work – page 1100, stating simply ‘You are now... the Aimless Renegade’, was posted at 5.23pm on the 2nd. Initial commands for AR presumably come quickly – I’m sure the person who suggested ‘quickly retrieve side arms’ felt very smart for that – and around 8pm a couple of the funny ones are picked, as well as one that reveals some lore about the hieroglyphs, and some that visually open up the space and reveal new interactable items, like the box of rockets, to prompt the next day’s commands.
Grandpa Harley has a ridiculous amount of ammunition, which he’s either stored in the ruins or around the island. He stamps his emblem on his crates, which seems unnecessary – who exactly is going to steal from him in such a remote location? What exactly is the need to enforce a Personal Brand here? I’m suspicious of his reasons for coming to the island in the first place, especially if it was once filled with reptilian life, and that life is now extinct (we haven’t seen any of it in Jade’s explorations). What if Skaia protected its ruins with a whole ass ocean because nobody was ever meant to come here, and Grandpa Harley trying to tame this island is what caused Skaia to take revenge on Earth when it did?
Jade’s wardrobifier is back to its random setting – she’s got the sun on page 1112, pleading face squiddle on 1113, and blue Slimer on 1114. And she delivers both the package and the harpoon rope without a hitch. I would LOVE to see what happens if Jade fails to carry out something she foresaw in a dream – what would she do in that circumstance, if she knew there was no fixing the timeloop?
Jade’s bass being what’s jamming the elevator makes me think she’ll play another tune. She apparently can’t harpoon the rest of the way – that must have been her one bolt – but we’ve seen her bass grow plants in her atrium on page 822 and 1026, so maybe it could grow the lilies in the pond enough to build a bridge? That will take time though, and Bec may be sleeping, but he has dog hearing and an infinite teleport. I don’t think Jade is soloing her way over to those ruins without another Bec encounter.

I love the shapes you use to draw machete, or really any character!! The way you draw noses, ears, bodies, fur, it looks like of I were to reach my hand out I could actually feel it, the bumps in the skin the squish of the flesh the softness of the hair. Not to mention the colors you use are very pleasing to the eye. So lovely... keep up the phenomenal work!!!
Ah, thank you so much!
#that's actually one of the tricks I use when I'm having trouble getting the shape and form of something right#I try to visualize the thing right in front of me and rotate it around and look at it from different angles#and imagine that if I could touch it how flexible and yelding it would be and what the surface would feel like#since I don't shade my art very dutifully the sense of tangibility has to come from somewhere else#so I guess I'm putting a lot of eggs in the shape basket#and I try to give off the effect that despite the flatness of my style the things I draw still exist in 3d space and have weight and volume#I've talked about this before but man I love anatomy it's one of my favorite things in the world#I specifically try to convey the feel that there's layers of muscle and bone and various other tissues under the skin#like my characters are made of flesh and not solid uniform rubber coated with fur or something like that (?)#I don't know what I'm talking about it's late hah#but I'm glad you like my art#anonymous#answered

👑🥩 Call 1-800-R4TT41L for a bad good time 🥩👑
I've been playing Our Wonderland + the sidegames and idk if you can tell but Orlam is my favorite. This game is bananas. You should play it if you like having your friends for dinner! (Cannibalism. There's cannibalism in the game.)
Also have a lil extra sketch of Orlam, Gidget, and Cecil under the cut cuz this post is already very long lolz
I imagine this is like Cecil's preferred place 2 be-- sandwiched between these two weirdos while they assure him they're definitely not drunk-- while he feigns annoyance. Cecil needs someone to be pretend-annoyed at, otherwise he might just die.
#on the real one of my favorite gore VNs that I've ever played. it is simply bonkers!#I can't necessarily recommend it for every1 but if you like visual novels blood guts and codependent childhood friendship drama....play it!#our wonderland#ow: orlam#orlam brewbacher#pixelated gore#cartoon blood#our wonderland fanart#cw: injury#cw: blood#horror visual novel#I hope the bunny outfit isn't too risque? I can never tell what other ppl's reaction/impressions of stuff like this will be#if it needs additional tags pls lmk!#I'm so glad I finished these before tomorrow cuz I'm gonna be gone for a while! but I want to draw more OW art when I come back.#tera-art

Hello there, I am a space nerd, a fact I’m sure no one guessed from the fact that I go by Stars on the internet. I am here to explain how the moon works, because I think it’s cool and also something that most people don't know. This is mostly an infodump just for fun, but may also be vaguely useful for artists, writers & stargazers.
By “how the moon works,” I mean that although pretty much everyone knows about the moon’s phases, not everyone really gets how they affect things like when & where the moon is in the sky. See: the common idea that the sun is in the sky in the day, and the moon is in the sky at night. You know this isn’t strictly true if you’ve ever seen the moon in the sky in the daytime, but do you know how it actually works? If I gave you a moon phase and a time of day, would you be able to tell me whether the moon was in the sky or not?
I am here to (hopefully) explain how you can do that! With scribbly diagrams! Please join me under the readmore if you would like to come to my TED talk.
First of all, to avoid any accidental curse-of-knowledge assumptions on my part, let me define some terms!
First off, the phases of the moon, which you probably know most of, but bear with me. A “full moon” is when the moon is fully illuminated and appears as a circle in the sky. A “gibbous moon” is when the moon is more than half full, but not completely full—it appears large and roundish, but not a circle (not everyone knows the name for this one). A “half moon” is when the moon is half illuminated and appears as a semicircle—this one has some other names that I’ll get to in a second. A “crescent moon” is when the moon is less than half illuminated and appears as a concave curve. A “new moon” is when the moon is completely dark from Earth’s perspective and can’t be seen in the sky.
Also, “waxing” is when the moon is transitioning from new to full, or getting bigger in the sky, and “waning” is when the moon is transitioning from full to new, or getting smaller in the sky.
Speaking of “half moon,” I frequently confuse friends by calling this a “first quarter” or a “third quarter” moon. Those names refer not to the illumination of the moon but to the full cycle of phases. If you think of the moon phases as split into four quarters, starting from zero at a new moon, then halfway to full is 1/4, full is 1/2, halfway back to new is 3/4, and then we’ve reached the end/beginning of the cycle with another new moon. So one of the half moons is a first quarter moon, and the other (with the other half illuminated) is a third quarter moon.
This is where I have to add a disclaimer—I am in the northern hemisphere, and I am familiar with astronomy in the northern hemisphere. If you are in the southern hemisphere, to you, I am looking at the moon “upside down.” Yes, really. If you’re using my diagrams, flip them upside down. I’ll try to be clear when I’m talking about stuff that flips between the hemispheres, but it’s something that I struggle to wrap my head around too, so apologies if I’m confusing or miss something.
So, here’s a diagram of the moon phases to show you the difference between first and third quarter moons, but if you’re in the southern hemisphere, please flip it over to see what they would look like for you. (The chronological order still goes in the same direction as the arrow, the moon itself is just the other way in the sky.)
The fun trick I was taught to remember which way the cycle goes is “light from the right.” (Southern hemisphere people, you’ll have to flip this one.) Light, or shadow, moves from the right edge of the moon to the left. So if the moon is a crescent and the right edge is lit up, it’s waxing, or moving towards full. If the moon is a gibbous with a dark right edge, it’s just past full and will be waning towards the third quarter over the next few days. If you look at the diagram above (and imagine the crescent and gibbous phases transitioning in between), this might be easier to imagine.
Like I said, for the southern hemisphere this would actually be “light from the left.” If you’re near the equator and the moon is overhead, you could use “light from the west,” because that’s secretly the real rule. Another thing that’s useful to know for stargazing—the moon, sun and planets follow a path in the sky called the ecliptic, which is roughly over the equator. (Not exactly—it wiggles around relative to earth’s surface, because of the tilt of the earth’s axis that causes the seasons, but it stays near the equator.) If you’re standing in the northern hemisphere, the equator is south of you, so the ecliptic is also in the southern part of the sky. When you look at the moon, it will always be in the south, so the west-facing side of the moon will always be to your right. Likewise, if you’re in the southern hemisphere, the moon (and sun, and planets) will always appear in the northern half of the sky, so west will be to your left. Light moves across the moon’s surface from the west to the east.
Now you can impress people by looking at the moon and saying, “Oh look, what a lovely waxing gibbous!” (I don’t actually know if the is impressive, but I do it all the time. For bonus points, get an app on your phone that tells you the phase of the moon and check it frequently so you can plan when to stargaze. Then you can casually mention that the moon will be full in a couple days when it’s not even in the sky, and maybe people will think you’re a werewolf.)
Now that I’ve explained the moon’s phases, I get to explain how they’re related to the time and place that the moon is in the sky. See, most people (I assume) don’t think twice about things like, say, a book describing a crescent moon in the sky overhead at midnight. But that actually can’t happen! And it has to do with the moon’s position in the 3D solar system, and how that maps onto our sky. This is kind of hard for me to explain without a lot of 3D hand gestures and pointing at the sky, but I’m gonna do my best to show it in two dimensions.
So, most people probably know that the moon’s phases are caused by the sun’s light illuminating half of the moon, and since the relative positions of the moon, sun & earth change throughout the month, the half that’s illuminated moves around the moon and changes how it looks from our viewpoint. So, a very basic rule: the side of the moon that’s illuminated is the side that’s facing the sun.
So, when the moon is full, that’s because the side that faces us is also facing the sun. This means the sun is directly opposite the moon. Here’s a very scientific diagram:
In case it’s not clear, this is a “top-down” view of the solar system where the moon, earth and sun are all in the same plane (in this case it doesn’t matter if we’re looking at the north or south pole, the positions would look the same). It’s also obviously not to scale and very simplified, but the point is to demonstrate that the moon is opposite the earth from the sun.*
The little person on the earth is of course spinning around as the earth rotates once per day. But at this point in the lunar month, you can see that when they are on the side of the earth where they can see the moon, they are also on the side facing away from the sun. When the moon is full or close to full, it’s opposite the sun—it rises around sunset, sets around sunrise, and is at its peak in the sky around midnight. This is how lots of people tend to think of the moon rising and setting, but it’s only true when the moon is close to full!
If that doesn’t make sense, here’s a diagram of when the moon is at the opposite point in its cycle, a new moon:
When the moon is new, the side that faces the earth is dark, which means the opposite side is facing the sun. The moon is on the same side of earth as the sun is. The little person spinning around the earth won’t see the moon in the night sky, because the moon is close to the sun in the sky,* and it’s actually rising in the morning and setting in the evening at this time of the month! You can’t easily see the moon when it’s new, but it might be visible a few days before or after this as a crescent. You’ll only see a crescent moon in the sky during the day, or close to dawn/dusk—it will be close above the horizon where the sun has just set or is about to rise. (The light edge faces the sun, so if it’s near the horizon in twilight sometimes it will look like the light edge is actually pointing down, with the tips of the crescent pointing up in the sky.)
*A side note on eclipses: My diagram is oversimplified! The moon, earth and sun aren’t actually all in the same plane all the time, they’re slightly misaligned. So even when I say the moon and sun are “directly” opposite each other, or aligned, they aren’t lined up perfectly enough to cast shadows on each other most of the time. When they do line up perfectly at the right time, that’s when you get a solar eclipse (when the moon is new) or lunar eclipse (when the moon is full).
Okay, so when the moon is full it’s in the sky at night, and when the moon is new it’s in the sky during the day. What about in between? This is where it gets a little confusing, especially for those of you in the southern hemisphere, who are going to have to flip everything I say. Apologies in advance, but it kind of hurts my head even to explain how this works in my own half of the sky.
So, when the moon is half-full, at the first quarter and third quarter of the phase cycle I explained above, the sun’s light is coming (from our perspective) from the side. The moon is ninety degrees away in its orbit from full or new, and the sun’s light is effectively perpendicular to our viewpoint, instead of parallel. This time it matters which way we’re looking, so these are a top-down view from the northern-hemisphere side. If you’re in the southern hemisphere, I think you can flip which is the first & third quarter to make this accurate.
As you can see, when our little person is spinning around the globe, they’re going to be seeing the moon high in the sky right around the line between night and day. From a northern perspective, the earth spins counter-clockwise (vice versa from the south), so if you picture the person spinning around their little earth, you can see that the first quarter moon is going to be visible when they’re spinning from light to dark (sunset) and the third quarter moon is going to be visible when they’re spinning from dark to light (sunrise).
Bonus fun trick: If you remember the rule of “light from the right” in the northern hemisphere and how that determines the order of the phases, and look at these diagrams again, you can figure out which direction the moon orbits the earth from this viewpoint. (This is, in fact, the only way I can remember which direction the moon orbits the earth, despite being far more complicated than just memorizing it. If you’d like to make a game of it, I’ll put the answer at the bottom of the post).
Remembering how this looks from this top-down floating-above-the-earth perspective is hard, but you don’t really have to. I only explained it so it would make sense when I went back to my earlier visualization, from when I was explaining how “light from the right” works. I’m a very spatial learner, and I like picturing things relative to my own body, so this is how I remember when the different phases of the moon appear in the sky:
Imagine you’re standing, facing the ecliptic, where the sun and the moon travel through the sky. In the northern hemisphere, you’re facing south, with east to your left and west to your right. Imagine that the sun has just set, falling beneath the horizon to your right. Imagine that the moon is full, and hopefully I’ve explained well enough that now you know where it will be—cresting the horizon at your left. Imagine the opposite too—the sun is rising in the east at your left, as the full moon sinks in the west at your right. The new moon’s position, if you’d like to visualize that, is effectively the same as the sun.
Now, the difference between the two half-moons. Light comes from the west—in the northern hemisphere, your right—so when the right half is illuminated, it’s the first quarter of the lunar month, waxing to full, and when the left half is illuminated, it’s the third quarter, waning to new. One is high at dusk and one is high at dawn. Which is which?
You’re facing south. Picture a first quarter moon, right side lit up, at its peak in the southern sky. The light side is always facing the sun. Where is the sun? It must be to your right, touching the horizon in the west, setting. The first quarter moon is in the sky before, during and after dusk.
Picture a third quarter moon, left side lit up, at its peak. The light side faces the sun. The sun is to your left, touching the horizon in the east, rising. The third quarter moon is in the sky before, during and after dawn.
When I imagine this, I’m standing on my back porch, where I often go outside and stargaze. My telescope is small and one of the few things it can see with any detail is the moon. I want to be able to look at the moon just after dark, without having to stay up too late—and this memory device, of facing south and imagining the sun at my right hand to the west, is how I remember that the first quarter is the best time for me to observe the moon. It will be high in the sky at sunset, easy for me to see over the houses and trees.
If you remember that the moon waxes and wanes from the west (right in the north, left in the south), then you can fill in all the gradations of crescent and gibbous moon between the four main quarters. (As an example, if I wait a few days past first quarter to go outside and look at the moon, it’s waxed into a gibbous moon and it rises later in the evening, peaking in the sky closer to midnight. Another example: a waxing crescent is between a new moon and first quarter, so it will trail behind the sun and be above the horizon in the southwest at sunset.)
I hope that all of this makes sense and is useful to someone, whether for figuring out when you can observe the moon and where in the sky to look, or for thinking about how to place it in the sky in your writing and art. If nothing else, I hope I have brought you entertainment, and/or ruined the way the moon works in Minecraft for you forever. (It rises and sets directly opposite the sun!! Even when it’s a new moon!!! Light doesn’t work like that!!)
And finally, if you were trying to guess, the moon orbits the earth counter-clockwise if you’re looking down from the northern side.

I started watching dungeon meshi and I'm actually obsessed. I only have 4 eps left so I think I could easily finish the anime today, but I wanted to give my thoughts on it anyway. I'm not even being dramatic when I say that I cannot remember the last time I finished an anime. I have watched significantly less anime in these past 4 years than I did when I was in middle school and high school. So dungeon meshi is reminding me of why I liked anime in the first place.
First and foremost I am a massive shipper and finding new ships plays a large part in deciding what shows or movies I'll watch next. So I'm kind of disappointed that idrgaf about any pairings in this show. But I've been in such a high fantasy mood that I'll watch it regardless just for it's unique premise and worldbuilding. I LOVE seeing what the writers come up with and how they depict the monsters (was SO surprised to see that the basilisc was a chicken-snake combo and not just a big snake like in Harry Potter) and I'm really intrigued by the plot as well.
Lastly, idk what I'll do when I finish the anime. I might read the manga but idk. But one thing I cannot see myself doing is joining the fandom because holy shit are yall annoying. This animes pretty popular so I have some idea of the most popular characters, ships and headcanons but I don't really like any of them. I think that if finishing the anime sparks a full blown obsession in me then I still won't join the fandom. None of my friends or moots have been talking about it so I think I'll just try to get them into the show. Like, I know the fandom is annoying but the show itself is actually really good.
#the pyre#I think the last anime I watched was jjk two years ago but that was only the first season bc idrgaf about that series#but before that the last anime and manga I finished was demon slayer and that was almost 4 years ago#like I was there when the last few chapters were coming out#but I think I probably will read the manga even though I really like the visuals of the anime#I'm super curious about that mysterious elf#he might be one of my favorite male characters besides Kabru and Chilchuck#I'm shallow so I only ever like pretty boys but I will admit I do have a soft spot for Senshi#and I was just never gonna like Laios sorry

#once in english class we watched A Study in Pink and had to take notes on the filmmaking details we noticed#I think about that specific day pretty often because I so suddenly discovered I had so much fun noticing all of this stuff#and there was a lot to notice#minute details where you can't be sure if they're there or if the curtains are just blue#like light and dark in a frame foreshadowing the morality of people in that position in the next frame and the like#stuff where you can't tell if it's intentional but even if it's not it's still doing something#and that so quickly and clearly nailed it for me what I myself like in visual storytelling in films and would love to do myself someday#and come to think of it that's exactly why Lucky Number Slevin is my favorite movie#(one of the reasons)#because it's on a whole different level#it's chock full of details that on the surface are just pretty#then below that they have a pretty solid function that's not too hard to make out#and then below that there's a fucking world of 'look what this is also doing' that makes my heart race when I spot a new one#there's load bearing convoluted wallpaper for fucks sake. And that's by far the most obvious#I still notice new stuff about this movie that leaves me sitting there like 'shit that's so smart'#not in a 'this is genius' way most of the time but a very solid#'yeah this was a good choice;#you could have easily done it differently but this way you sidestepped the hint of a vibe based problem three scenes down the line'#and I freaking LOVE that#anyway I just found out. same fucking director.#somehow... this keeps happening#yes I'm currently watching it again. fourth or fifth time this month I don't remember exactly

(Also this person, @gutsbutt-reblogging being so valid in the tags.)
went through Giovanni's quotes the other day and he has a surprising amount of 'adults know better'\'you are just a kid and therefore stupid' lines, which made me think that he is somewhat sensitive about his age. Not that he misses being young, rather he feels insecure about clear signs of aging. Red called him 'old' once or something and he never recovered.
anyway Gio dyes his hair, thank you for coming to my ted talk

I think we as a society need to be reminded how good the original Powerpuff Girls was. Here's some of my favorite things about it:
the fight scenes had a level of punchiness and impact that was rare for cartoons of the nineties, and fight scenes that were way better than what one would expect from a comedy
The character writing is so good that a large portion of the show's most iconic episodes consist of just showing how the girls' personalities react to different scenarios, for example in one episode the girls take turns recapping a fight that had just happened, and the tone and art style of the flashback changes depending on whose telling the story
One of the recurring extras is a talking dog that goes about it's day like a normal human
Each girl has mostly the same powers with one special ability that sets them apart. Blossom has ice breath. Bubbles can speak to squirrels and is also fluent in Spanish. Buttercup can curl her tongue.
while the majority of the show is lighthearted comedy sometimes it'll just decide to be nightmareworld for an episode and i think thats pretty cool
The show utilizes a blend of classic upa linework and sixties art deco shapism to create a visual style that is utterly timeless. If the majority of the show wasn't cell animated you would not be able to guess when it came out
The main villain's speaking patterns were directly inspired by The Super Dictionary. AKA, the same book that brought us this:
You can tell.
In the season one finale, the girls fight a giant monster using a mech suit. During the fight, there is a sequence that is literally just 20 uninterrupted seconds of an absurd amount of missiles coming out of every possible orifice of the robot. And then they miss.
There was an anime adaptation made in the 2000's and its actually pretty good, like it does take a lot of creative liberties but its clear that the people making it understood the spirit of the original show and were just adapting it to reflect japanese pop culture in the same way the og show reflected american pop culture.
The show had an insanely kickass soundtrack consisting of early techno so clean it's kind of shocking that it was made in the late nineties and not the early 2010's pre-dubstep era
satan is there and he serves cunt
