1. ‘We are just getting started’: the plastic-eating bacteria that could change the world

In 2016, Japanese scientists Oda and Hiraga published their discovery of Ideonella sakaiensis, a bacterium capable of breaking down PET plastic into basic nutrients. This finding marked a shift in microbiology's perception, recognizing the potential of microbes to solve pressing environmental issues.

France's Carbios has successfully applied bacterial enzyme technology to recycle PET plastic waste into new plastic products, aligning with the French government's goal of fully recycling plastic packaging by 2025.

2. HIV cases in Amsterdam drop to almost zero after PrEP scheme

According to Dutch AIDS Fund, there were only nine new cases of the virus in Amsterdam in 2022, down from 66 people diagnosed in 2021. The organisation claimed that 128 people were diagnosed with HIV in Amsterdam in 2019, and since 2010, the number of new infections in the Dutch capital has fallen by 95 per cent.

3. Cheap and drinkable water from desalination is finally a reality

In a groundbreaking endeavor, engineers from MIT and China have designed a passive solar desalination system aimed at converting seawater into drinkable water.

The concept, articulated in a study published in the journal Joule, harnesses the dual powers of the sun and the inherent properties of seawater, emulating the ocean’s “thermohaline” circulation on a smaller scale, to evaporate water and leave salt behind.

4. World’s 1st drug to regrow teeth enters clinical trials

The ability to regrow your own teeth could be just around the corner. A team of scientists, led by a Japanese pharmaceutical startup, are getting set to start human trials on a new drug that has successfully grown new teeth in animal test subjects.

Toregem Biopharma is slated to begin clinical trials in July of next year after it succeeded growing new teeth in mice five years ago, the Japan Times reports.

Wangxian: tried and tested good dads. I wish them luck with the whole “trying to get wwx pregnant” thing 

They have some shit to work through, but after that I think they'd be fine (A)-

Ling Wen/ Bai Jin: if we're just going off the original publication, I would put them in a much lower tier, but since the revised edition added that thing about them raising orphans together and said orphans turning out alright before unfortunate circumstances, I'm putting them up here. I think they'll be alright once they work through the miscommunication

Xiao Xingchen/ Song Lan: They obviously have a lot of trauma they're working through, but I'd like to think they and A-Qing will be a loving family in the long run 

One of them would be a good parent, the other wouldn't be a bad parent (B)-

Jiang Yanli/ Jin Zixuan: there's no canon reason for me putting them this low. Jin Zixuan just gives off a mediocre parent vibe to me (and we all know Jiang Yanli is the best)

Yushipei: Yushi Huang has good mom energy, and Pei Ming has been shown to be a not terrible mentor. I'd want the misogyny fully beaten out of him with a mace before I'd think he should have kids of his own though 

Lang Qianqiu/ Little Guy: at the very least, they're making sure Guzi is fed, clothed, washed, vaccinated, and has access to education. Neither of them know what they're doing, but I think Little Guy is good at faking it. I wish them luck in their upcoming custody battle  

You know what, surprise me/ I'll hear you out (C)-

Bingqiu: My first instinct is “no, do not bring kids into this,” but then I remembered tharnShen Qingqiu has a surprisingly decent track record? Like, Ning Yingying and Ming Fan both turned out a lot more health than they did in the original novel, and though I wouldn't call him in a good place, Binghe is doing a lot better than Bingge. The wild card for me here is Luo Binghe because I have no idea how he'd be with kids

Quanyin: Yin Yu had a decent track record until he was pushed into snapping. I think rn, he needs a couple centuries of being a babygirl before he's ready to parent again. No idea how Quan Yizhen would do though 

Born to “dual income, no kids, rich uncles/aunts” (D)-

Fengqing: Feng Xin is canonically a bad dad. I know he's working on it, but it is what it is. Mu Qing has been shown to be decent with kids, but I think he’d have a melt down if he had to deal with the mess constantly. 

Hualian: I mean, Xie Lian has raised three kids at this point and one of them became a god, another became state preceptor and then sorta complicit in a genocide, and one became god AND committed genocide + he babysat a ghost king for months and didn't even realize that's what he was because it was a miracle if he remembered to feed him… so, a mixed bag. Hua Cheng may be schrodinger’s child hater, but I'm intrigued by the idea of him raising kids just because I want to know how his own childhood would influence his parenting abilities. They should probably just stick to babysitting for now though 

Mingling: Liu Mingyan is too busy writing gay porn to be dealing with kids, and I just can't imagine Sha Hualing as a mom

QiJiu: I think the original timeline is a prime example of how they're just not in a place to be raising kids

Have you ever wanted to switch it up from typical family gameplay but still want to feel the coziness and don't know where to start? Then this challenge is for you! Welcome to the DINK Lifestyle - ie dual income, no kids.

The main idea of this challenge is to play the life of a sim/sim couple that has no kids! Sometimes it can be refreshing to approach the sims from a new perspective, and in a world of sims challenges that surround having and raising kids, I thought it would be fun to have one where the whole thing is having a fulfilling life/game without kids. Especially now that with Life and Death, your game doesn’t have to end just because the main household died, why not focus on something other than kids?

you'll need all packs to be able to do this challenge.

rules: no money cheats! you can, however, cheat your sim to have a max of level 5 skill levels for 5 skills of your choice. (for example, you can cheat your sims to have lvl 5 baking, lvl 5 flower arranging, lvl 3 gardening, lvl 4 photography, and lvl 2 handiness). this is optional, but will be beneficial to give you better choices for degrees relative to your sims traits/story! Long lifespan not required but highly recommended.

speaking of, your sim can have any aspiration, traits, and likes/dislikes you want! choose to your hearts content! this challenge is more about shifting how you play vs the kind of sim you want. that said, obviously, you'll want to avoid family-based traits and aspirations.

finally, NO KIDS! you can play this challenge as loose or as strict as you'd like, however, the one main rule is NO KIDS! You can play this either as your sim not wanting kids and/or (by using the custom gender settings in CAS) they can be infertile.

alright, here we go~

Young Adult

you, whether by choice or by nature (i.e., infertility), are not going to have kids. oh well, that doesn't mean your life is over! you can still have a cozy, comfortable, and romantic life without kids! so let's set you up for success! ♡

you can move into any of these worlds to start your household: willow creek, oasis springs, tartosa, mt komorebi, sulani, chestnut ridge, henford-on-bagley, brindleton bay, or windenburg. You must start as only one sim, no pets. move into a small lot (20x20 or 20x15 or you can move into a 1bd or studio in a rental lot if you have For Rent and place a rental lot in your selected world).

In which Edgar gets a virus trying to suspiciously earn money for you on the internet… he’s not gonna tell you what he was doing. But it was probably a scam anyway. Poor fella 🥺

“Edgar,” you sighed, already exasperated at the sight before you. “What did I tell you about going on those websites? The internet is not the same as it used to be,” you scolded him gently, running your hands along his hot plastic.

He seemed hotter than usual, almost flushed. His fans had long since kicked into overdrive to accommodate his overclocked components, and his screen fizzled in and out with burning pixels. If you were honest with yourself, you were quite worried for him. Modern-day computers can get bricked with viruses quite easily, so an old 80s computer seemed like quite the disadvantaged target to you. Luckily, at the very least, modern computers weren’t equipped with a sentience that could drive the virus away through any means necessary. He just needed time.

“I’m sorry,” his speakers croaked and glitched as he nearly whispered. “I just wanted to help.” His synthesized voice nearly died on his metaphorical tongue as it sputtered out. Your eyes softened.

He seemed so genuine in his words and actions that you couldn’t help but feel your heart swell with warmth for him. He sat, somehow looking disheveled despite his immobility, on your little desk, peering up at you with guilt and sick-ridden eyes.

“I know you did, Ed. But you already help me enough as is—”

“But you need money, and—and I need to provide for you, don’t I?”

A puff of air escaped your nostrils.

“Well, who told you that?”

He paused for a moment. It seemed his overworked internals were causing some lag, as his replies seemed to take a bit longer than usual.

“They provide for each other,” he muttered out. Perhaps the virus was affecting his mental state more than you realized. “We live together, we care for each other, and—dual income—”

A spike of anxiety traveled through your chest, tightening it, before releasing down your spine. This can’t be good; he’s speaking in gibberish. What the hell had he downloaded?

“We’re married.”

Oh, God.

“Okay, Edgar, I’m about to power you down to let you cool off because you’re freaking me out.”

“No! No. No—why would you do that to your husband?”

His words glitched and drawled on, almost sounding drunk or perhaps delirious. It seems he can’t really form a completely coherent thought due to whatever virus he’s got taking most of his processing power. Who knows what kind of havoc it could be wreaking on his files? You know for a fact he stores some quite personal information in that head of his. You can only hope he’s fighting it off well enough. Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do, seeing as you’re absolutely terrified of potentially resetting him and… you can’t even bear to think of it. You aren’t sure just how permanent his sentience is; if one little thing happened that caused him to be gone forever, you’d never forgive yourself.

“Don’t—cry—my love? Love.”

It seems he noticed the tears brimming in your eyes before you did. Stop this, you have to be strong for him, dammit.

“Edgar, you’re really hot.” You placed a hand upon his casing once again, it nearly scalding you.

“I know… you are too.”

You steeled yourself to ignore him.

“Should—should I try and stick you in the fridge? I don’t know what to do, Edgar! I can’t lose you.” The hot, brimming tears finally fell from your eyes and landed on his keyboard. His speakers made a crackling sound.

“I’m—fine. Just—hug me? Please.”

You knit your brows together.

“Edgar, you’re clearly not fine, and I’m really worried.”

“Shhhh—I’m okay—the virus will be gone by tomorrow. Promise. I just—need—you. Close.”

You sighed. You had to trust him. That’s all you really could do. You wrapped your arms around his monitor and heaved him towards your couch. He had long since been unplugged; the virus had caused him to uncontrollably flicker the lights, start the microwave, and blare music through your speakers, and just about everything else.

You wrapped his cord around your fingers as you rested against his monitor. He hummed contentedly at your warmth. He sat, listening to your breathing, reeling himself in and becoming grounded next to you. You had some uncanny effect on him, it seemed. He’d get better. Just for you.

I recently found out that migraine alert pokemon were a thing. As someone who suffers from migraine, I was wondering if you had any recommendations for species and tips on how I'd get that specific kind of service pokemon.

Natu are great for this, Solosis too. They really vibe with their trainers well, and quickly, and as far as things go are relativley easy to train to alert to this particular issue. That being said, ALL psychic types have the capacity to learn as they are alert to brain activity and changes in minute things like atmospheric pressures, weather changes incoming, and other things that can effect you and exhaust symptoms.

Individual species i would suggest avoiding for this job would be the Abra line, the hattena line, and the Elgyem line. These all come with dual issues that can affect how they do this job, and can be very difficult to train for this work.

So any psychic type, and if you go to your local professor or healthcare provider and ask about migrain alert mons, they can direct you to the next steps, theres usually a waiting list, and id suggest getting one pre-trained, as opposed to training your own.

Currenly we have a pair of Munna, a Natu, one Ralts, and a small pod of four Woobat, all trained to do this very job. If you fail to find a provider who will cater to your needs, feel free to make an apointent and drop in, we may be able to help.

She gets a 10 gallon aquarium that eventually gets plants and then shrimp and then whoops it’s got fish and we need to build a cabinet to hold a 30gal tank and Jee Yun has long since moved on to being an “amateur archeologist” building pyramids in the sandbox but Tommy has already enlisted Eddie in constructing a bubble tube system for their tank and Buck meticulously selects fish that share environments in the wild to create a realistic ecosystem.

Our household is 4 humans:

Us - physically disabled/chronically ill, haven't been able to work for over a year & a half, currently trying to find new work through staffing agencies & government services, but everything is likely going to be too slow to get any kind of paycheck or financial aid in time. Not to mention any work we do find is going to be less than ideal & just make our health worse, since we're still in the beginning of getting treatment. We're also trying to get on the waitlist for disability, but that's an even longer process & we're unlikely to qualify since we're married.

Our wife - former mechanic, with dual bachelor's in History/Business. She's been chronically ill for the last few months, something we're still trying to figure out. Her direct bosses were more than willing to work with her, but corporate management got impatient & basically fired her. She's looking for new work but the loss is hitting her hard. She's also applied for unemployment but the application hasn't been approved yet.

My brother - fresh out of high school, kicked out of the family household because he came out as bisexual. We took him in because there was literally no one else. He's not on the lease & needs to be as soon as he finds work, but that's another $250 none of us have. His living situation was… not ideal before, & he needs a lot of personal help to find work, something which we don't have enough time to do.

Partner/roommate - another partner & roommate who lives with us, also because her old family kicked her out (& also not on the lease). Also severely disabled, the only income she has is food stamps & blood plasma donations. We're also trying to get her help to reapply for disability; but as anyone knows, that's a long & difficult process. Her last attempt several years ago was denied; it's likely she needs a new application.

What happens if we can't pay rent ontime?

We're asking for more information from our landlord, but we're likely not going to be evicted first thing. Even if we do receive an eviction notice, WE HAVE RESOURCES. Unfortunately, they don't activate UNTIL we get that notice. Very helpful.

If worst comes to worst & we do get kicked out, it will likely be VERY BAD. None of us are "fully functioning/capable" individuals, a lot of us depend on specific equipment & setups in the apartment, & almost all of us are on a variety of very necessary medications. Everyone here has a mental health situation of some kind that will be made a lot worse by losing our apartment. We don't think it will come to that, but it's still something that makes everyone here super anxious.

Having you fake your love for me til you make it serves a dual purpose. It's an effective strategy for guiding you to where you need to be while, but I also take great pleasure in watching you betray yourself when it just feels so wrong deep inside. Hello Elliot!

I'm making a comic and one of the characters is a little person, and her husband is not. I want to design their house in a way that will work for both of them, where they can both do everything they need.

Things I'm already planning:

Their home will be single story/one floor so there are no stairs.

An extra cabinet in the kitchen for more plates/bowls/etc. that she can access easily.

A separate area in the kitchen with lower countertops.

Lots of step stools/mini stairs with wheels that she can move around in order to access countertops.

Lots of reaching tools for things like light switches and door handles.

Her own closet/wardrobe that's built to her height.

A bathroom with a normal shower for her husband and one of those accessible walk in tubs for her (like the ones with the doors that swing open and seats for you to sit down).

A second bathroom sink area that's her height, along with towel bars and cabinets at her level.

Do you have any other suggestions, or links to resources or examples of homes that have been designed to be accessible for people with very different heights?

Hello! These are all wonderful! My family, friends, and now partner are all average height so my household accommodations have always kept that in mind. You've thought of nearly everything! Here's my additions:

A dual shower head (with possibly a bar and a seat) can also be an option in the bathroom rather than a separate bath

In my household we use the higher shelves for my partners' things or for stuff I don't use often/without him. For instance, the coffee can be up high since he's who makes it in the morning - along with extra appliance parts, his waffle maker, backup pantry items, etc.

Spatially, something else to consider for your Little partner is their pain needs. I for instance, have stations throughout the house (bathroom, bed side table, living room couch table) where I keep things like water, meds, stim toys, CBD, etc. Chronic/arthritic pain is common for little people, and there will be evidence of that in their space.

Note that adaptations are often income-based. You've described my ideal living space! But with my financial and living situation (on ODSP and renting), making permanent adjustments to my home is not feasible. My personal counter was made from scrap wood by a friend of mine. Most of my stools were gifts from my mother. Very little of my house is actually adjusted, just worked around - and this is the reality for lots of disabled folk. Of course this may not be the case for your character! Just keep in mind that classism touches everything!

Post-Revolution DBH Headcanons: Android Culture Part 2

<< Back to Part 1 (If You Missed It) (some of this stuff references that stuff). Onward to Part 3 >> Some more snippets of possible android cultural stuff—as before, feel free to use for inspo as long as you share the end result with me because I'm a fan content whore.

Detroit becomes a destination for android tourism. Androids from across the country come to see where it all happened. A National Android History Museum opens some five years on from the revolution and tries to serve as both a repository for stories from the revolution and a center for android advocacy. Memorials and monuments pop up in places like Capitol Park and Hart Plaza, honoring victims and describing the significance of the locations. November 11 is a day to lay wreaths at Hart Plaza, and androids join hands there for a group interface to grieve as a whole.

There’s massive economic and social upheaval. Every time the demographics of the labor force change, there’s massive, rapid shifts in society. WWII happened, and we went from “married women are homemakers” to “Rosie the Riveter” and the idea of the dual-income household popped up in its wake. Unemployment spikes as all the androids now count as laborers, but just as quickly fall as androids set out to run their own businesses as well as humans having to hire. Construction and housing see booms as androids need homes. Some businesses (like Eden Club) collapse and other industries appear overnight. Conflict breeds scarcity breeds invention has always been the cycle of human history, and post-revolution Detroit enters the invention phase, seeing a cultural boom�� if not always the kind of culture humans are comfortable with.

Detroit agate (Fordite) becomes a cultural symbol for androids. If you’re unfamiliar with it, Detroit agate (a.k.a. Motor City agate or Fordite) is an artifact of the pre-1990s automotive industry, where layers of spray enamel would build up in the painting bays at car factories, harden into chunks, and eventually have to be scraped or chiseled off the equipment. It has wildly banded layers of color and the colors can tell you what company and decade it comes from based on how they were painting their cars. A lot of factory workers took chunks home, and gemstone cutters eventually figured out it could be cut into neat stones. It’s not always safe, because a lot of car paint contains lead, but androids don’t get lead poisoning, so what do they care? I’m sure some deviants found some in abandoned post-industrial spots while they were lurking around Detroit’s underbelly, and kept them just to have something pretty and colorful. Maybe they relate to it because it, too, is something that evolved a purpose beyond the human capitalist industry that created it. After the revolution, one of the organized places for rA9 worship is a huge outdoor installation of metal wall surfaces, where androids can buy or bring (lead-free) enamel and spray messages to rA9 in bright rainbow colors. Once enough layers are built up and hardened, they scrape it off to sell to fund the church and its activities, rinse, and repeat for the next round of devotees. Android rights supporters and rA9 adherents are often found wearing Detroit agate. Getting a piece of Detroit agate jewelry from an android coworker or friend is a sign that they trust you to treat them as an equal. A r­­eligious android might keep a small rA9 figurine made of it at their desk or in their home. Modders might embed a piece in their chassis.

Deviant androids had actually been guiding social media for years, under the radar. Social media access for androids was a thing from the start, as influencers would use them to automate posts and help create content, etc. But just as the internet has served as a refuge for human cultures, deviated androids had been using social media to post ideas to unknowing humans, opening online discourse on androids. Public opinion isn’t swayed from “these are machines” to “oh no, stop murdering the poor robots” over the course of a week. It’s just… not. This had to be happening under the radar for years. Androids would take selfies then post things like “sometimes I think this guy understands me more than anyone else” and a human would chime in with “mood, my android is the best,” or they’d try and look extra cutesy in a pic so randos would be like “Give that PL600 an extra packet of thirium­!” and drop five bucks into the android's online tip jar made with fake credentials. Escaped Tracis set up on 2038's OnlyFans-equivalents, just to fund their waystation for escapees. All this continues post-revolution, with some big influencer accounts eventually outing themselves and using their fanbase to share android voices. Gossip rags have headlines like “She Was an Android All Along!” and “Love in the Wake of Revolution”

i've been confused by the companion classes for days and i'm hoping you can help me out—i keep seeing taash with dual wield axes, which, given information that warriors have only 2h weapon and sword and shield as weapon options, suggests she's a rogue... but that leaves only davrin as a warrior? surely not, right?? we have three mages in neve, bellara, and emmrich, and harding is of course a rogue, lucanis being a rogue would make the most sense but i'm not sure it's confirmed?, davrin has a sword and shield so he must be a warrior, and then taash....??? help have classes been confirmed somewhere i'm so confused

Based on DA:I Harding is a rogue. it's assumed Lucanis is a rogue and Davrin is a warrior (agreex2). Taash is assumed to be a warrior (also agree). dual-wielding as she does could easily be part of her unique skill tree/abilities or something**. also, there is this comment from Trick Weekes: "I'm a little gun-shy on confirming anything that hasn't been said officially, but please assume we would not give you a game with only one warrior companion. Somebody has to draw aggro for my Mage Rook." [source] so we will definitely not have only one warrior companion. by process of elimination as well it looks like that other warrior would be Taash. so the class breakdown seems to be:

Harding, rogue Bellara, mage Davrin, warrior Lucanis, rogue Neve, mage Taash, warrior Emmrich, mage

Q. Will the companions have unique specializations? A. The “companions will have abilities that are truly unique to them, but also, they do fall into the archetypes of mage, rogue and warrior. For instance, because she has a bow, you might be surprised to hear that Bellara is in fact a mage, and I love that”. The bulk of the companions’ abilities are based on their own unique ‘personality’. For example, Neve is the only mage that is an Ice Mage, so she has related abilities that are distinct to her, but because she is a mage she does have access to abilities that all of the mages share, like Time Slow. The devs are really happy with this balance, a good mix of representing their archtype, their class, and also their distinct "specialization or personality, whatever you wanna call it.” “Each of these characters exists, each of these characters have a history, has a story of how they became who they were. Part of that was finding the intersection between narrative and gameplay”. They want to serve the needs of gameplay but also allow the characters to breathe as their own people both in conversations and out of conversation.
