People tag so many normal things as "autism" that I'm lowkey concerned that majority of these people aren't even autistic but have latched onto a very real developmental disorder to validate their quirks. Either that or a symptom of autism is assuming your experience is so incredibly unique that any normal human being couldn't possibly experience it.

as many of us know, envy is the personification of father’s dual feelings toward humanity: his self-proclaimed superiority over them, as well as his own longing for the emotional bonds they’re able to cultivate and maintain. the latter is something he hopes to obscure, for fear of being it seen as a weakness, and because of this, his creation of envy, as well as envy’s own actions, intends to do just that. this objective is, in my eyes, primarily achieved through the use of depriving envy of attention, whether that attention be real or imagined.

my preliminary reasoning for seeing “attention” as such a prominent theme, both with father and envy’s characters, is that father started off as “the dwarf in the flask”. aside from the creepy eye, sharp teeth, and sentience, there isn’t much that he’d be able to accomplish on his own aside from annoy people, perhaps. obviously, this is why his manipulation of hohenheim was necessary for him, otherwise he would be nothing. people would perhaps be curious upon first seeing him, this strange creature in a container, but eventually grow bored and stop paying attention to him. not only does he have an unlikable personality after some time, but the average person won’t want to befriend him or have any sort of meaningful relationship with him. thus, he’s nothing without the attention and collaboration of a more able being. but if he has that, along with patience and resolve, he has the potential to become, even supersede, a god, not only wielding tremendous power but also maintaining the attention of everyone below him - a shallow, selfish compensation for his lack of emotional companionship.

anyway, i digress...envy, by definition, can denote to any mosaic of negative emotions ( e.g. sadness, resentment, insecurity ) that ultimately stem from 1.) a lack of attention to what an individual already has and 2.) too much attention to what an individual does not have. this can be observed in the homunculus themselves in a multitude of ways. their origin, for example, already toes this line. 

firstly, it’s interesting to note the birth order of the homunculi. of the seven, envy was the fourth to be created. they are the “middle child”. throughout the years, birth orders in families have been extensively researched by developmental psychologists in order the deduce the environmental effects they could feasibly render on an individual. many studies point to a correlational existence of universal personality differences that abides by birth order, and middle children have been found to feel the most neglected, overlooked, and attention-starved ( middle child syndrome ). we as an audience have limited insight into the canonical homunculi / father family dynamics, but based on this alone, it can be assumed that envy may have felt, or was intended to feel, similarly. it’s highly likely that they didn’t feel familial closeness toward any of their siblings or father ( aside from lust and previously greed, but those are studies for another day ), but due to father’s projection, as well as their namesake, it’s something that they crave. genuine, loving, emotional attention from others. this, of course, marks the beginning of their jealousy toward humans. 

as an extension of this, envy’s true form is that of a small, wormlike parasite: one that wields no remarkable strength and can be easily overlooked (*). for them to have true access to their abilities, they are required to “leech off” a “host”, or another, stronger body: something capable of both housing and utilizing the philosopher stone’s power - something that is worthy of both capturing and maintaining a victim or sacrifice’s attention. even so, envy’s strongest and most prevalent ability is shapeshifting, which allows them to blend in amongst humankind. lust claims this is why they serve as one of father’s instigators, despite their signature brashness: shapeshifting is ideal for stealth - ideal for soliciting information at the expense of going unnoticed.

speaking of “brashness”, i also strongly believe envy’s deprivation of attention may be linked to that. granted, several other factors play a role in why this homunculus is emotionally immature ( e.g. father’s projection, father’s abusive conditioning of them and their siblings, a counter against their jealousy toward humans, etc. ), but at the same time, it’s likely that envy is prone to tantrums and dramatics because it catches the eye - compensation for the neglect they feel. they’re able to seize a fair amount of attention by screaming, yelling, overreacting, and making, as well as milking, overdrawn speeches about humans.

lastly, the other hallmark of envy’s personality is their arrogance. this trait is something that often works hand in hand with their brashness ( and what usually gets them into deep shit ). similarly to what i was saying earlier, envy’s arrogance is partly a defense mechanism against their jealousy toward humans ( if they claim to be superior to humans, their feelings of jealousy can remain under wraps...and maybe they’ll even believe it, too ), but again, it may also be to compensate for how overlooked they feel by others. envy can give themselves as much attention as they please in the form of toxic, feigned self-confidence; they may as well be their own number one fan - even if it means an inflated, albeit frail, ego - if there is nobody else who can genuinely notice or come to love them.

i might add onto this, or i might write up another post. i’m running on a few hours of sleep, and i’ve been talking in my mother tongue all day, so this might not make sense?? idk, if you’d like clarification or have any follow-up questions, let me know!!

Dora and the Lost City of Gold Review

Dora and the Lost City of Gold is a very fun all-ages adventure! I’ve never seen more than a clip or two of Dora the Explorer, but that didn’t hurt the movie at all for me. The film starts with a summation of the cartoon’s style to get new audiences up to speed on the conventions of the show and it worked perfectly. I was in the mood for a fun jungle adventure flick, saw the good reviews this was getting, and I’m happy to report that it lives up to both those standards!

Isabela Moner more than capably leads the film as Dora, whose enthusiasm for learning, exploring, and life in general is absolutely infectious. Dora’s expertise in the jungle and her drive to find the lost city of Parapata were awesome! While her childlike enthusiasm is written as a side effect of being secluded from most of modern society to a large extent, it was refreshing to see a teenage lead who isn’t dour and down on life. Her dauntless willingness to go it alone when she had to was a relatable and realistic trait, and her acceptance of the fact that she was even stronger when she had a team backing her up was a cool message. I’m glad Dora didn’t lose her exuberance by the end of the movie or change to be more socially acceptable to her new high school friends, even if she does choose to stay and get to know them better rather than go off on another adventure. Her journey isn’t that she needs to remember to be herself regardless of whether she fits in or not, it’s that she needs to let people in to her world again, so Dora getting to remain true to herself while making new friends was very cool. Of course, it’s always great to see a female-led adventure film (particularly in this subgenre) with a nonwhite lead and cast (or at least the overwhelming majority of it) too! More of that please!

Dora’s cousin Diego (Jeff Wahlberg), her intellectual rival at school Sammy (Madeleine Madden), and everyman student (and impressive breath-holder) Randy (Nicholas Coombe) provided a share of challenges for Dora she wasn’t expecting at all: high school. Diego’s embarrassment over Dora’s personality felt like a realistic (though unfortunate) reaction to a younger sibling who doesn’t want to conform to high school society’s standards, while Dora’s scientific take on Diego’s feelings for Sammy was funny and built their sense of familial bonds nicely. Theirs is the strongest relationship in the movie and emotional core. I thought the breakdown of their bond felt realistic and painful (leading to Dora largely shutting everyone out as a kid and opening that wound all over again as a young adult) and that the repairs to their relationship were well-done and satisfying. I was glad Dora and Sammy’s rivalry wasn’t over some guy and that Sammy wasn’t written or performed as a mean girl, but one who was concerned about her standing in the class GPA. She also generally couldn’t understand Dora’s outlook, which is ironic given how Diego and apparently the other students at school don’t understand her, vilifying her for her outlook and “attitude” as well. The common ground she and Dora came to with Dora’s know-how and Sammy’s contributions to the quest for Parapata created a nice build to their budding friendship. I liked that Randy didn’t have toxic vibes to his crush on Dora, and he brought a nice balance of pure terror and truly wanting to help his new friends to the adventure. These kids have their issues, but none of them were ever unlikable and they all felt like real people, not caricatures or an adult’s attempt at writing “annoying youths” (or cartoons). I also liked that all four of them came together to keep each other alive and they all contributed to solving the traps protecting Parapata’s treasure. That was a cool way to unify Dora’s quest to save her parents (Michael Pena, Eva Longoria) and finish their search for the city with her arc toward sharing her life with people and depending on friends instead of just herself.

Dora’s parents don’t have much to do here, as they’re kidnapped for most of the film, but I liked how supportive they were of Dora (even if they were just as bewildered by some of her habits as her friends at school were). I really liked that they spelled out the distinction between exploring and learning vs. treasure hunting and plundering cultural artifacts. CBS’ Blood & Treasure made a similar point of noting who should get to display what artifacts (if they are to be displayed at all), and it’s good to see a more socially conscious approach to archaeology taking hold in the movies and on TV. Films like the Indiana Jones series are among my all-time favorites, but those artifacts don’t belong in an American museum, they belong to the cultures that originated them. I didn’t expect the movie to bring in an actual Inca royal/goddess (Q'orianka Kilcher) with an army to protect Parapata, but that was an excellent addition that felt totally natural with the world they’d established! I always want the supernatural stuff in films like these to be real, so seeing these people appear was very cool. It was also a neat twist on the formula (and execution of her parents’ guidelines on exploring) that Dora & co. didn’t get to keep the treasure, only increase their knowledge by confirming its existence.

Most of the villains are ultimately just muscle, but Eugenio Derbez’s Alejandro Gutierrez gets a lot of screen time thanks to initially disguising himself as a friend of Dora’s parents. He was affable enough that it was reasonable Dora and her friends would fall for his lies (particularly with the stress of their situation and his apparent rescue of them). I wonder if the more comedic persona he puts on was designed to fit with and manipulate Dora’s eternal optimism, which would be a solid take on the older generation manipulating the best intentions of the younger one to fuel their greed. He certainly uses their intelligence to further his own interests (and, depending on how deep his cover was, to keep him alive in the first place). He also personifies the old-school treasure hunter method of archaeology, contrasting him nicely with the younger, more socially and culturally conscious generation. I definitely wouldn’t have included him disrobing in front of teenagers though, even if it was caused by hallucinogenic pollen in an animated sequence. 

That moment not being a great look aside, it was refreshing that like Dora herself, a modern adaptation of a kid’s property didn’t take the “dark and gritty is cool and mature” path in an effort to draw in older audiences by ignoring what made the show a success in the first place. Instead, this fully embraced what I assume is the upbeat vibe of the cartoon and absolutely ran with it. They do poke fun at some of the conventions of the animated series, like Dora breaking the fourth wall to teach the audience vocabulary and science, but those self-deprecating jokes absolutely worked and it didn’t feel like the filmmakers were embarrassed by the source material or like they were outright mocking it. It would’ve been easy to make those moments part of the video diary/podcast she has at the beginning of the movie (particularly with the popularity of Instagram and Snapchat stories nowadays), but playing them straight and just having everyone else think she’s weird was so much funnier! Her Map (Marc Weiner), Backpack (Sasha Toro), and possibly her pet monkey Boots’ (Danny Trejo) abilities to talk were played as her childhood imagination and/or hallucinations, which felt like the right balance for the very fun, heightened reality she lives in. I’m glad that they kept the talking, masked fox Swiper (Benicio del Toro) here as well: he feels like a major part of the series’ world and I’m sure fans would’ve been bummed if they left him out. I loved that the questions surrounding him from our heroes were not that he was a fox working with mercenaries, but just that he wore a mask!

While Dora works for all ages, kids are definitely the main target audience and some of the other humor reflects that. I’m not a fan of toilet humor—it’s not that I find it inherently juvenile, I’ve just never thought it was funny—but the two gags in that realm here (quicksand that sounds like farts and the difficulties of using the bathroom in the jungle) didn’t go on long enough to make it feel like this was only for kids; it felt like this was just one style of comedy at play among many. Like Alejandro’s pollen trip, I wouldn’t have included everyone running by Sammy while she was using the bathroom though. Unlike so many movies described as “all ages” but which are really just for kids, the rest of the movie’s comedy, the character development, and the action-adventure sequences totally work regardless of your age and they successfully made it feel like our heroes were on a real adventure with actual dangers. Even if “jungle puzzles” aren’t a thing in the real world, the ones showcased here felt classic and were a lot of fun to see our heroes solve. The pacing moved the story along briskly, but I didn’t feel like Dora’s problems fitting in (and letting others in) were rushed or underdeveloped. The score hits the exact right vibe for this and I liked the original song at the end of the movie too.

If you’re like me and in the mood for a fun, all-ages jungle adventure with a great cast, good action, and a solid emotional core, Dora and the Lost City of Gold will absolutely deliver! I’d definitely watch a sequel. If this one’s still in a theater near you, go see it!

To answer the question of what my favourite versions of Moriarty is, we need to figure out what, imo, makes a ‘good’ Moriarty. For my money, there are three aspects that make Canon Moriarty interesting:

Intellect: probably obvious, but Moriarty is an opposite to the World’s Greatest Detective, so his intellect, like Holmes’, is key to his character.

Familiarity: the phrase ‘everything I have to say has already crossed your mind/then possibly my answer’s crossed yours’ is a cliche of Holmes/Moriarty interactions, but it’s a damn good cliche for a reason. Holmes and Moriarty should have a healthy respect for each other, that’s true, but more importantly they should have this sense of, as Neil Gaiman once said about him and Terry Pratchett: ‘You’re another one of me! I didn’t realize they made another one!’

Savagery: Seems weird given the other two points, but a good Moriarty should always have this point that, if pushed off, attempts to, say, push a guy off a waterfall. If my favourite Holmes is a bleeding heart barely pretending to be an unfeeling machine, Moriarty is barely hiding his inner savage behind the mask of congeniality.

So, with that out of the way, my most interesting (not objectively worse/best, just the ones I feel deserve attention) Moriarty’s from worst to best.

10: BBC Sherlock (Andrew Scott)

Let’s break this down: he’s not 1 because no-one in Sherlock is smart, it’s just Moffat trying to trick the audience with lack of explanation. He’s not 2 because Moffat is so obsessed with twists that Sherlock and Moriarty spend most of their time twisting each other so much that there is no time given to their familiarity between them. He’s not 3 because he’s not savage - he’s a poor man’s Heath Ledger’s Joker, but boring and with more homoerotic subtext. He’s not Moriarty. He’s just boring.

9: Elementary Moriarty (Natalie Dormer)

I really wanted to place her higher because I honestly love Natalie Dormer’s version, but whilst she covers the first two points the focus is more on her torrid romance with Watson Holmes, which is all well and good but does rather detract from her Moriarty-ness.

8: Young Sherlock Holmes (Anthony Higgins)

This version of Moriarty, like this version of Sherlock, is... interesting. We don’t really see his savagery, but the entire movie works to build up his relationship with Holmes. I could have done with a little less racism, though. And a little more actual Egyptian Moriarty in a movie that makes him Egyptian.

7: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

1 and 3, mostly - as interesting as the idea that he’s a former British agent turned actual bad guy is, that’s the disadvantage of removing Holmes from the story - it’s like a Joker story without Batman, Moriarty doesn’t really have anyone to contrast with, and the two people who can contrast with him - Mycroft and Fu Manchu - never share a second of pagetime with him. And yet you can only do Holmes v Moriarty so many times, so how do you make Moriarty interesting without Holmes? Well...

6: Newman’s Moriarty

...You make them the contrast of another character, that’s what. In all seriousness, Newman’s version of Moriarty might not get much to do, but man does he feel good.

The premise of Hound of the D’Urbervilles, i.e. Sherlock Holmes but Moriarty instead, is brilliant at giving us not just how similar Holmes and Moriarty are, but how different - a personal highlight being Moriarty telling Moran that of course he didn’t figure out Moran’s backstory using deductive reasoning, why would he waste his time, he researched everything about him before he entered the room. 

I’m not entirely sure if Newman’s Moriarty is savage as opposed to increasingly petty, but his relationship with Moran hints that whilst Holmes looks at people and sees problems to be fixed, Moriarty looks at people and sees tools to be exploited, and that is a pretty sweet contrast that isn’t really explored in other versions.

5: Brett Moriarty (Eric Porter) + Merrison Moriarty (Michael Pennington)

Moving on to a classic Moriarty, whilst I don’t really think Porter adds anything the same way Brett does, he is still a really engaging portrayal. The bit where Holmes and Moriarty exchange a look on the Reichenbach Falls? Brilliant, and it wouldn’t be half as good without his particular portrayal, which stems far closer to the canon than previous ones on this list.

The BBC Radio adaptation is practically tied with this because they’re extremely similar - both attempt to follow canon as closely as possible, whilst adding their own twists. I do prefer the radio version, though, because we get some hint as to how Moriarty’s organization works and how much of a threat Moriarty is. This is actually enhanced by it being radio - whereas Brett’s version has to have Moriarty enter the room because it’s a visual medium, the radio adaptation can just have Holmes playing the violin, suddenly stopping and then revealing Moriarty’s been in the room this whole time. It’s really good, is what I’m getting at. But speaking of canon...

4: Canon

@mirrorfalls said in their original question that no version of Moriarty since the canon has ever actualized the reptilian qualities of Moriarty, and I can’t help but agree. It’s really interesting that Moriarty is linked to an animal whilst Holmes compares his body in another story to ‘a mere appendix’ - something intrinsically human even as it is superficially worthless. The idea of Moriarty in this version - calm, cold, but liable to snap at any point - is quite simply perfect, and the only thing that doesn’t rank him higher is that, in the same way William Hartnell doesn’t rank as one of my favourite Doctors, what it means to be Moriarty has changed so much since his inception. I don’t think Conan Doyle ever intended Moriarty to have the staying power that he did - he’s a plot device, pure and simple. Other authors added to that, and so we’ve got the version of Moriarty which lasts today.

3: Light Yagami

...Hear me out.

No, Light isn’t exactly a traditional Moriarty. For one thing, I’m fairly certain Moriarty doesn’t have a god complex, or a magic notebook that kills people, or a snarky apple loving Death God as a sidekick (Though, who knows, give Moran an apple fixation...) But, there’s a reason I recommend at least the first half of Death Note for anyone wanting a great Holmes/Moriarty story... It’s really good at outlining exactly what makes Moriarty and Holmes so interesting: Mind Games. Mind Games galore.

Watch, say, L’s introduction. Now imagine Holmes challenging Moriarty in the same manner. Hell, Light definitely ticks all of the points of a good Moriarty in this scene alone: he anticipates the police noticing him, he builds such a good rapport with L without either of them actually meeting that I remember losing my shit when I first watched Death Note and realized that this episode would feature the two of them actually meeting face to face, and despite his apparently calm demeanor at first, he immediately kills Lind L Tailor the instant he says something he doesn’t like. Just... he might not be a ‘true’ Moriarty, but he’s a damn good interpretation even if that wasn’t the goal. Speaking of not exactly ‘true’ interpretations...

2: Professor Ratigan (Vincent Fucking Price)

No objections, I trust?

Really, though, I wasn’t someone who watched Great Mouse Detective as a kid - I first watched it about two years ago, and god damn is this a good movie. True Story, when thinking about which Moriarty’s belong on this list, I immediately jumped to Ratigan, because he’s brilliant. He ticks all the boxes and then some - His intellect may not be his primary trait, but it’s still there, and his rapport with Basil is the stuff of legend at this point. And, to be brutally honest, Ratigan is the reason savagery is on this list in the first place. That fight on Big Ben? No version of Reichenbach has yet surpassed it, and it is everything great about this version of that core concept. Really, everything about Ratigan is a summation of how to do a brilliant Moriarty.

So, who can top the World’s Greatest Criminal Mind? Well...

1: RDJ Moriarty (Jared Harris)

Yes, I know, I was surprised to.

I was around during the Sherlock/RDJ films strife. I remember how much these films were lambasted for being ‘too action-packed’ and ‘not cerebral enough’, in stark contrast to the majesty of Sherlock and it’s twerpish plot twists. But when I think of a great Moriarty? Oh, boy, this one kicks Sherlock’s ass.

It’s also irritating, because it’s really hard to point out what makes him better than Ratigan or even Light. His plan is convoluted at best (not that the other two are any better - a good Moriarty does not a decent plan make), not helped by it being exactly the same as his plan in that godawful League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie (which, btw, would still be bad even if it didn’t drive Sean Connery away from the film industry, but is far worse on those grounds) but, still, look at this scene. Or this one. Or that fight scene.

Tell me that’s not Moriarty.

That first scene especially runs through all three establishing Moriarty traits, yet perfectly utilizes all of them. We see how smart he is, we see his and Holmes’ respect for one another, but at the same time we see how much Holmes wants to see him behind bars and we have the perfectly paced reveal of his murder of Irene and that he intends to do the same to Watson and Mary. Everything about this scene is brilliant despite it being just the two of them talking. There’s even a bit later in the movie where Moriarty outsmarts Holmes and they communicate the gamut of emotions both characters are feeling through them exchanging a single glance.

So, yes, these films may be a bit too action packed. Yes, they may exaggerate character’s abilities, their plots may be inconsequential for the most part. But goddamn is their Moriarty a classic.

Excuse me for being somewhat lazy on Headcanon Day this year, but I don’t feel like typing up anything super elaborate like I have the last two. I’ve just been really busy this week which is why I haven’t made any significant contributions yet.

Instead, enjoy some of my headcanon on the legendaries.

Just a fair warning: it’s exceedingly heavy character analysis information. Very little makes sense without the full context as the primary reason for these existing is mainly for my reference when I get around to writing the stories.

I also included what I’ve dubbed “minifiles.” These are small tiny profiles that list all of the above information in one place.

Please note the legendaries weren’t “born” on the days listed; they were all created at about the same time. The astrology bit is really just for me to have no blank fields on the profile form. Plus, it’s a good exercise.

I won’t be making every packet available in the future, but I just wanted to share the full extent of the handful I have right now.

I know that, condensed, this doesn’t look like a lot of work, but each packet represents minimum 3-4 cumulative hours. So this is a minimum of 18-24 hours.

Also, sorry for the excessively tiny font, but keep in mind I have 66 of these things to eventually create, print off, and cram into binders. I’m trying to conserve space for when I reach that point.

If anybody’s curious about the full process:

It actually all starts with the questionnaire. That probably takes up the majority of the time because it’s the most tedious part of all of this. That represents a good 2-3 hours at least. This is because I do everything longhand. I just really dislike typing this on the computer directly, so I have to write it out with pencil and paper, then type it up, so you can see how repetitive answering the same 40 questions can get even with the vastly different answers.

Then comes all of the analysis stuff. Before I did these, I didn’t have a methodology but I do now.

I do the Multiple Intelligences next because that’s pretty quick. Maybe 10-20 minutes. The test I use is a PDF recreation of the Birmingham Grid for Learning. I used the Way Back Machine to tease out all the questions and recreated the scoring.

I do the MBTI next which is another maybe 10 minutes for the test itself. But if the character ends up borderline on two or more types, I can spend upwards of 30+ minutes combing through the profiles to extract the traits I see. Sometimes I come back to this part after I’ve done some more work with them. The test I use.

Temperament is usually pretty quick, about 5-10 minutes since I just have to look at the profiles and see what matches best. The site I use.

The next bit is one of my most hated bits: astrology. This doesn’t seem like it would be a big deal but looking at the section clearly reveals I choose everything down to the exact day.

This process is very long and involved.

First, I look at some basic profiles to get a feel for the signs and which element they might be. Then, I look at the more expanded profiles to determine which is best due to having greater detail.

A lot of the characters end up falling on cusps because I’m lazy.

What does this have to do with anything?

Well, the next thing I do is go to a site with those birthday profiles. If I’m dealing with a cusp, I have like 5-6 profiles to sort through which isn’t bad.

But when you’re dealing with a macro sign like just Gemini or Leo, that’s where the headaches start since there are about 30ish profiles to dig through.

If this ends up being the case, it can sometimes be 60+ minutes for this bit alone. Site 1. Site 2. Site 3.

The Empathy Quotient is another really short test, maybe 10 minutes. Same with the Self-Knowledge Traits. The test.

The Trait Sheet is another very involved process. I have two character trait thesaurses (Positive and Negative). From there, I do the negative traits which isn’t too bad. The positive traits are a bit of a headache since I write down the list of all the positive traits they have. I then go back and put them in the proper categories. Then I type it. That’s probably another 30+ minutes.

Wandlore is usually another very involved process that’s half logic, half intuition. (This is the wand information from Harry Potter if you can’t tell.) I used to just use a google document but I ended up printing out everything and putting it on index cards so I can flick through them physically. I go through cores (the three official ones, then over two dozen fanon ones), flexibility (all fanon), numerology (basis was given by JKR herself but I expanded on it), then the wood.

Sometimes this can be quick because I have a good understanding of the topic and characters and my intuition guides me to certain bits that just fit so perfectly. Other times, I have to sit there and deliberate for awhile.

All in all, this process can take anywhere from 5-30+ minutes depending on how many choices I end up with (usually the wood is what kills me because there are like 40 different ones I’ve collected).

Arcana is another thing that can be easy or teeth-grindingly frustrating. Yes, this is taken from the idea of the Persona series. If you’re familiar with Persona or the Tarot, you can see why this can be one of the most frustrating things.

For me, this is one of the most important since it is the absolute summation of everything the character stands for. This is usually the hardest thing to pin down after wandlore because of it.

I’ve become fairly familiar with a lot of the Major Arcana because of how much work I do with the Tarot for character analysis, but I still don’t understand most of them. Or sometimes I get so many that might be applicable that it’s difficult to know which one to choose. I often end up using dual Arcana (primary and secondary) because of two just fit so snugly together. (Luseli’s Devil/Temperance for example)

This isn’t even getting into times when none of the Major Arcana fit so I have to dig into the Minor Arcana. (Ludeos’ King of Cups and Veshana’s Queen of Wands for example)

Again, this process can take anywhere from a minimum of less than a minute to 30+. The site I use.

When it comes to the human characters, I’m going to add in another step of creating a personal timeline for them. Thankfully, that will just be a matter of copy-pasting from my Master Timeline. But that’s going to also be involved because of involving ~*~math~*~ to deal with my calendar system. I’ll also need to summarise any and all events, then type them up to be included on said timeline.

I didn’t do this with the legendaries because it’s pointless. They’re immortals, so I’m looking at them at the macro level. Digging as deeply into their psyches as I do Summer, Solana, or anybody else would just be even more time consuming and ultimately frustrating since there would never be an end. I have a lot of experience with immortal characters, so I know when and where to cut my losses on delving into their histories. A couple of major events are generally enough to get a good feel for them. (In this case: the founding of the Temple system following the war, the Civil Flame, and the Extinction (the events of the Hero.)) I wish I could go into greater depth, but it’s just not necessary.

But yeah, there you go. This is the process I go through for character creation for Ranger stuff. It’s very tedious, time-consuming, and downright infuriating at times, but I end up with extremely fleshed-out, unique characters and come out with an individual comprehensive psychological profile which feels so rewarding to hold in my hands when I finish.

So all that bitching I’ve done in the past about hating science fiction and fantasy? I’m going to be a hypocrite and say that I love this song. As a matter of fact, of all of Rush’s “long” songs, this is my favorite. I know that this is blasphemous, but I like this song more than 2112 

Why?

I struggle with remaining objective and rational while still trying to engage with others personally and emotionally. Trying to find a balance between wisdom and love is a universal trait in all of us. I’m pretty sure that’s what’s argued when the disembodied spirit of the explorer from Cygnus X-1 Book 1 is deemed the god of balance by Apollo and Dionysus.

I love everything about this song (the music and the lyrics) when the explorer catches the attention of Apollo and Dionysus. There’s a sense of triumph in emerging from the black hole of Cygnus X-1 and bringing balance to the two hemispheres of the mind.

This song (and the Hemispheres album as a whole) almost broke the band, but it also marks a shift from pure science fiction and fantasy towards a more introspective, humanistic approach to lyric writing.

And if there’s anything we here in the United States need right now1 it’s a balance between the heart and mind.

Sanji should be king of the North Blue

I’ll admit, this is a bit of a stretch and a little too fantastical for the taste of many, but I can’t help but enjoy the thought anyway. I’ll also admit that there are a couple flaws with this train of thought but hey, life is never perfect. So let’s dive into this scenario and allow me to explain what I wish to see come out of this arc if I were allowed to choose.

           I had this thought when I reread the beginning of this recent arc and was reminded of some questions I had that still haven’t been answered. One of which was Who dethroned the Vinsmokes’?

Perhaps it’s not important for the plot of the story, but if Oda does decide to leave the answer out, I’d think it odd. Granted, until this arc, no one has ever heard of the Vinsmoke’s but it isn’t as if he gave them “scrub status”. This family is still powerful enough, influential enough to effect the marines, Sanji’s bounty, the reverie, even the science community within the One Piece universe. Yet, they (well, more like Judge), lost their throne in the North and we still haven’t an idea as for who they lost it to. In addition to the Sora flashbacks, all we do know for certain is that despite the Vinsmoke’s power, they still lack in numbers or something which lead them having to need Big Mom’s help.

           So let’s break this down first:

Weaknesses

1.      The siblings: I feel as if Reiju would support Sanji no matter what, but there is no way in hell the brothers are agreeing to this.

2.      Sanji wants to be a cook, not a king. He can’t rule a kingdom and plus, he’s too focused on helping Luffy become pirate king and looking for the All Blue.

3.      Sanji isn’t a Vinsmoke and he doesn’t ever want to be associated as one.

4.      The North Blue doesn’t want another Vinsmoke control!

5.      Sanji has nothing to gain by becoming king.

Responses/Strengths

TBH, I haven’t thought through what Oda may have in store for the brothers; maybe they’ll be arrested or maybe they’ll be sent away somewhere. Sanji may have said—numerous times—that he doesn’t care if they die but I don’t think that’s completely true. As Reiju explained, the genetic modifications messed up their empathy compass so their actions aren’t completely their fault and knowing how benevolent and empathetic Sanji can be, I’m sure he won’t be the first in line to order their execution.

First let’s do a little compare & contrast. Luffy- right upon meeting him, we automatically know who he is (and what) and what he wants to do with himself—not that different from Naruto exclaiming he wants to be Hokage. We know he’s the MC, he’s a devil fruit user (and what kind it is), and we know he wants to be pirate king. Even better, we even know how he can achieve that goal just from the intro alone—find the One Piece. Zoro- similarly, we meet him, learn who/what he is, and what he wants—to be the best swordsman in the world. Notice the pattern yet?

Well, also notice how both these characters, from the get-go, have also made promises in some shape or fashion on how they are never going to give up or lose in order to accomplish their dreams?

Now let’s look at Sanji; we meet him and learn what he is and what he wants—to find the All Blue—and learn of its existence….and that’s it. Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that except notice the lack of detail? How does Sanji wish to find the All Blue? When he does find it, what does he wish to do with that information? Why hasn’t he asked Nami—the navigator—about any possibilities for its location? What does he want when the journey ends? So on and so forth…

See, Oda has written Luffy’s and Zoro’s story with a beginning and an end—we’re just watching the journey in progress—but Sanji isn’t as clear cut. In fact, he’s one of the most complex characters Oda has ever written about. You could even make an argument that he’s done a thorough job of fleshing out the rest of the crew, except Sanji. So what does that mean? Well, in the world of anime, this can imply that Sanji, unlike Luffy and Zoro does not have immunity. Albeit, this is Oda’s story and he mostly likely will not kill Sanji or make it so the All Blue doesn’t exist, but the point is that there is a possibility that Sanji can die. It surely doesn’t help that Sanji is always at the ready to die! Jesus, Sanji, calm down!

Let’s move on to point #5, hm? Sanji has nothing to gain by becoming king. I disagree and there are 2 main reasons why it could be beneficial for Sanji to claim the North. First let’s bring our focus back to Luffy; why does he want to be pirate king again? According to Luffy himself, he said he wanted to be pirate king because the pirate king is the freest man of the sea. Beautiful…except that isn’t entirely true (sorry to burst your bubble, Luffy). Sure, Rogers practically owned the world prior to his death, but he wasn’t really “free”. In the OP universe, many pirates own territories (i.e. multiple islands and villages) and unless your allies with them, it’s considered trespassing and/or a declaration of war if you enter another pirate’s territory w/out permission. I’m sure Rogers owned a lot of territories, but it’s also heavily implied that he made a ton of allies too, something that Luffy seems to encompass as well. But just think how beneficial it’d be for Luffy to be able to gain guaranteed access around the North w/out even having to be “responsible” for it—because remember, Luffy doesn’t want to give orders or own any armies w/the exception of being a captain. He already is allies w/Vivi from the East and if he can find allies from the South and West (or obtain territories in those areas), that’s already half of the fucking world under his name! In summation, if Sanji claimed the North, it’d give Luffy free access to more territories and freer space to roam.

The second reason is for Sanji himself; he wants to find the All Blue and whatever that may mean for him, ultimately, this means his search needs to start by looking in one of the Blues, so why not in the one he was born in (for starters)? There are theories that suggest that the Red Line is what keeps the All Blue from being in a thing (and I’m one of those believers) and that principle can also be applied literally; if all leaders of the Blues can align together, then the All Blue wouldn’t just have to mean the ocean, but the people as well. Sanji as a king/ruler would be in an All Blue alliance. That said, I also think something of this magnitude would help Sanji mentally/emotionally; unfortunately our boy has a lot of baggage and he has trouble seeing his value in life. Something like this would be perfect for Sanji to develop confidence because of how benevolent he is, he’d see first hand how life-changing he is to other people, particularly a poverty-stricken, hungry region. 

This leads to weaknesses 3 &4, which go hand-in-hand in some fashion. This idea may be all nice but the problem is, would Sanji ever be willing to reclaim his name and would the people of the North even want/let him take over? I’m willing to bet that, no, Sanji would never take the Vinsmoke name (under any circumstance) so best bet is that he either takes his mother’s name or he takes on Zeff’s name. As for the people of the North, well, they have been suffering from corruption for what seems like decades now so I personally believe (and you’re all more than welcome to disagree) that Sanji can easily slip under the radar and successfully take over. They may not like it or try to resist but if the Strawhats back up Sanji—which they certainly would—then I don’t think it’d take long to win the people over.

Now point #2; Sanji certainly seems the type to be content just cooking for the rest of his life, at least, that’s what we’re meant to believe. Remember, he initially believed he’d be living at the Baratie his whole life as a chef until he met Luffy and realized he wanted more. And that’s no fault of his own, of course he believed that because he escaped from a dysfunctional family, a shipwreck, and starvation 10 years prior so there was no reason for him to believe he’d be living any other kind of life. My point is though, that when Sanji is in a comfort zone (as he currently is w/the Strawhats), he has the tendency of clinging onto it without thought of his future. In other words, he lives by the day, in the moment, not in the could be. That explains why he thought him going through with the marriage was the best option because it’d mean the safety of the crew. He didn’t even consider how the marriage would affect him or how his disappearance from the crew would affect them. This also explains why his self-sacrificial nature is so potent.

Because of that, Sanji may be unaware of his full capabilities, but let’s not forget that this is One Piece; he does not have to choose one or the other. If he were to become king, he could still very well continue to be Luffy’s left-hand man and chef. As ridiculous as it may sound, we have a couple of examples of rulers multitasking. Just take the previous arc—Doffy was not only king of Dressrosa, but a shichibukai, and a dealer in the black market. Even further, Doffy too came from the North; funny enough, you could argue that he’s the opposite of Sanji—the perfect yin-yang situation. So with that said, it’s not a matter of Sanji not wanting to be anything other than a chef, it’s just that he hasn’t thought about what else he can do.

Lastly, before I end this long ass post, let me just point out that Sanji becoming king would only strengthen the parallels that already exist between him and Luffy. I always found it special how it was typically Luffy who knew of Sanji’s personal story and they have some strong similarities in terms of character traits, lifestyle, and personalities. But even if not, I still think, why can’t be king? He is capable, he just has to realize it. So that’s my thought on it, sorry this was really long and tell me what you think!
