#but thinking about the depth i would add to ro is inspiring me

i'm very interested in how you would change ro (especially since i totally agree with the post you made about her). do you mind sharing?
nonsie I would absolutely love to share. I've mentioned for a while that the ogres feel flat and that Ro's character has become repetitive, but I don't think I ever explained what I'd want to do with her given the chance.
my main grievance boils down to me wanting her to acknowledge her weaknesses. a soldier with the confidence of a god is only interesting to a certain point and becomes boring, but someone who can look at themselves and acknowledge their faults and work on them is infinitely more interesting and explorable to me. this is something we see with literally every soldier like character, and I'm just over it. Sandor and Grizel frequently bicker about their talents and who could beat each other, Bo, Ro, and Sandor try to one up each other and just say they could beat each other with nothing more to it.
I can accept and actually encourage this confidence in Ro up to a point, especially when she's first introduced. it makes sense. she's entering a hostile situation, surrounded by people who hate her--there is literally no one open to her at that time. Not even the other ogre. having that front of composed strength, so secure in herself she has the time to get invested in the little, unimportant things (complaining about elves and their culture), it gives her security in a way. But we've gotten past a lot of that. now it's stubborn and a refusal to change that will get her killed. I think it nearly did in Nightfall.
second thing i want to change: emotional vulnerability and awareness. What we've (or at least I've) been talking about recently is how she doesn't care how her actions affect others. Now, I don't think empathy is the solution to this, not for her. Empathy isn't necessary to be conscious and considerate of others and its ableist to think it is. So many people without natural empathy make deliberate decisions to be aware of and caring towards others every day. if Ro is going to be this highly intelligent trained soldier, i think it would make more sense for her to have a technical approach to emotions. to be trained to assess her soldiers and how they're doing and what she needs to do to support them to get them through the mission. right now she's just doing what she wants with no regard to the real impact it has on Sophie and keefe. i want her to use these skills to look at the situation and step back. talk to each of them seriously, individually. assess it. and then decide what she'll do next.
for the vulnerability part, I want her to have a real goal she's working towards. something she enjoys outside of just being threatening. something she does in her free time just for her. considering she's been in three and a half books we really don't know that much about her. I also want her to make an effort for an emotion she has to be understood outside of confidence and a sense of superiority. she doesn't fit in anywhere she goes, that's something sophie can relate to. I want them to form a legitimate relationship based on genuine shared experiences. right now we know she eventually wants to be queen, but with her father still alive that's a distant personal goal. maybe she wants to develop a new type of microorganism, or figure out how to make her own weapons, or anything that has personal meaning. we don't have that from her right now (that I can think of) and I think it's a big...letdown? i can't think of the right word. disappointment? like she doesn't live up to her potential and we were rooting for her but she fell short.
finally, I want her rebellion to be more deliberate. right now it feels like she's rebellious and plays with knives just because she can. i started to touch on this in the tags of a previous post where i was saying I love her for her potential. i have a soft spot for rebellious characters, but I want it to be intelligent misbehavior and criticism. she's so close yet so far. she doesn't like how sparkly and crystalline the elven world is. okay, but why? i'd make it about politics or something similar. maybe she doesn't like the crystal infrastructure because the constant harvesting is damaging to land important to her people. maybe the bright colors make it inaccessible to other species (life dwarves).
she thinks elves look boring and plain? okay, why is that a problem? maybe it's because the repetition off their species erases individuality and she values who people are and not who society wants them to be. she gets tattoos because she fully believes her body is just that: a body. she doesn't need to be careful and deliberate and sacred with it (nothing wrong if you are like that), and not every piece of art on it needs to have deep meaning. she does her tattoos herself? maybe it's because she wants to challenge the idea that everything meaningful needs to be done the "right" way.
I think Ro could be a great avenue for a lot of meaningful messages about nonconformity and individual thought, but she's gotten stuck into this box of being the Sokeefe shipper and messing around with teen drama. i want her to exist outside of that. this is not to say that every individual thing she does needs to be profound or have a secretive message behind it, but I think some of them should be more than just rebellion for the sake of it.
I'll stop here before this post gets any longer, but these are just some of the thoughts I have about what I'd want to do with Ro in relation to the series. as possible future queen she has reason to be more than just this character meant to further a ship and make everyone uncomfortable in the process. i think there's a lot of potential for her that hasn't been used yet.
is there anything you'd want to do with her or that you think Shannon should've done to add depth to her character? /gen. I kinda threw a lot at you so thought i'd give you this opportunity to respond if you wanted !!

What's the inspiration behind the ROs?? 💜
Tumblr media
+ someone else asked this as well, but i accidentally deleted your ask, i'm so sorry!! 😭😭
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE!! LONG POST AHEAD ⚠️
so let's start with Silvan/Silva. @lifesupreme-if already knows about this, but S was actually inspired by my very own best friend which i also have a crush on (we're going to call them K for privacy purposes). obviously some things have been changed and tweaked to fit the story and the character i have in mind better, but their core personality was inspired by them. K and i have known each other for over a year now and we became best friends a few months after we first talked with each other, which is also the time i started to have feelings for them. now, if we do some quick maths (i'm horrible with numbers btw don't count on me if you ever need help with math😭) we'll realize i've had a crush on K for over a year. i know that'd mean i'm in love with them but hahhHahahaHhhHahaha let's not go there😮‍💨 while i acknowledge i genuinely love them, i don't think they feel the same way, so i'm coping by using their wonderful personality for one of my ROs!! the cold and stoic, sarcastic type that doesn't like anyone but has a soft spot for a specific person, the way they remember stuff about other people, they way they care, the way they slowly open up, the way they've never been truly loved properly, the way they always suffer in silence,,, all of these traits found in S's personality were inspired by K. (was this just an excuse for me to talk about my crush best friend??? probably.)
Leona and Clover are the kind of characters i always knew would be in my IF. even before figuring out the entirety of the plot i knew i'd want a strong woman with a sword, and i knew i'd want a mage with white hair. it just made sense to me to have these two characters in the story. to be honest, Clover's character being a RO was pretty much a last minute change. There were supposed to be only four love interests, but Clover was way too perfect to not add them in the mix. they were inspired by this character called Asra from the mobile dating sim The Arcana (which i HIGHLY recommended, it's one of my favorite games/stories ever, i've been obsessed with it for, like, a year now) and they have really similar traits appearance wise. Leona wasn't inspired by anything in particular, except for my love for women with swords😮‍💨 even though i figured out her personality later on, i had her appearance in mind from the very beginning.
River is, well, a guilty pleasure you could say. i've always had a weakness for flirty and charming characters, bonus points if they're a pirate! he's definitely inspired by all the wattpad bad boys i was obsessed with when i was 14😭😭 i think he came from the very hidden depths of my mind and soul that secretly long to be a princess stolen by pirates, then fall in love with their captain (pretty much the first few chapters of desiderium HAHA). The God... okay wow, how do i put this. The God is genuinely everything i love in a RO. i go absolutely feral for non-human love interests, i don't know why. maybe the thought of a god, an immortal — a supernatural in general — LOVING a mere human just does it for me. all the better when they're a complete and utter dumbass that flirts nonstop. they seem somehow harmless at first, but they could, and would, kill you in an instant.
that's about it! i hope i didn't blabber on too much, i'm sure most of the things i said didn't even make much sense😭 but i was just in the mood to talk about my ROs :D hope you all got to know them a bit better!!

Hello! Uh I just read through like all you're fics and their amazing and I love them and I wondered would you mind doing a prompt about lamp but it's u!Logan u!Virgil and u!Patton and they treat Roman horribly so Remus and Deceit basically come and save him and take him away to be with them on the other side of the mindscape. (Sorry I just really love platonic creativitwins and platonic roceit)
Ello! So incredibly sorry this took so long to complete! And dw I also really love platonic Creativitwins and Roceit! Thanks for sending in the prompt, and I hope you enjoy!!
Warnings : Unsympathetic Logan, Virgil, and Patton; Sympathetic Roman, Remus, and Deceit; Starvation(Pretty much? I’d call it that but people can correct me); Aphobia/Arophobia(Don’t remember if aphobia includes aromantic); please tell me if I should add anything!
Masterpost
--------------------------------
Roman stared at his door blankly, face pale and hair disheveled. He took a deep breath, trying to find any courage to even step close to the door.
Why don't you take a break kiddo? Thomas needs to focus on this other task for now!
Patton's right, Princey. We don't really need you around right now.
They are not wrong, your contributions although sometimes helpful are otherwise useless and just obnoxious.
I'll call you down once dinner is ready, yeah?
We still love you!
Roman had sunk out, his heart feeling heavy. It had been four hours, two of which the filming would have been done and the other two hours had been for dinner. He knows because he was able to smell it from his room. He hugged himself, hands trembling. His stomach growled loudly and yet he still couldn't find the motivation or strength to leave his bed.
They hadn't called for him, hadn't tried to come and get him to eat. In fact, they never saved anything for him or slipped anything under the door. They never left anything out for him. The others just seemed to not care that Roman wasn't joining them.
Maybe that was his own fault for not trying harder.
It was his fault he was loud and obnoxious like his brother. It was his fault that he couldn't seem to focus on whatever task was at hand, unless it involved something creative. Childishly creative, that is. It was his fault, he wasn't trying hard enough. He couldn't even get out of bed to go down and join them himself.
But it hurt, knowing that they wouldn't try to call him as promised. For weeks, it hurt going hungry because whenever he got wrapped up in a project and lost track of time they'd never bring anything for him, or even save something.
It hurt knowing they didn't accept him being aromantic, saying he was just faking it because they'd seen the way Roman had looked at them. They'd see him blush and stumble over his words and took that as a sign Roman liked them. It hurt knowing he'd been guilt tripped into this relationship he had falsely assumed to be love.
It hurt him that he knew it was built on lies and manipulation. He knew it was as fragile as a freshly frozen lake, the surface thin but thick enough to cover the truth, the depth of what was really there. It hurt him that he knew this and still he stayed with them, because any attempt to break up had gone horribly wrong in the past.
Roman took a deep breath, his stomach cramping and he felt he might get sick.
He couldn't summon anything in his room anymore, the previously vibrant walls having been drained of all their color. Initially he hadn't noticed the change, his lights dimming into a soft pink glow that barely illuminated the room. He'd only noticed the shift when he was trying to find inspiration and decided to do a still life, only to find everything a depressing gray except his sash and part of a broken crown. But now even those were beginning to lose color.
Roman really didn't want to move.
He could still hear Patton and Virgil talking downstairs, loudly exclaiming how adorable the other one was. Roman's breath caught in his throat and he closed his eyes tightly, trying to imagine something, anything besides the image of the two downstairs talking over whatever dinner had been and Logan quite possibly there too smiling softly at his loves. He wanted the pain to come back in his stomach to distract him from any of those thoughts.
There was a soft knock on his door, so soft Roman thought he might've imagined it. He groaned softly, waiting another moment despite the feeling of his heart leaping to his throat. Maybe Logan wasn't downstairs with Virgil and Patton, instead maybe he'd brought something up to Roman, finally. There was another soft knock, and Roman felt his heart sink slightly, because Logan didn't knock softly, he realized. Logan really didn't knock ever.
"Come in." God, he despised how his voice cracked.
His door didn't open by much as a deceiving and a demented side slipped into the room. Remus closed the door softly behind him as Deceit strode over to Roman, and soon both the sides were looking down at the more accepted part of creativity. Roman huffed softly, turning away and burying his face in his pillow. He felt the bed shift as Remus sat down.
"Hey Ro, please don't try to ignore us." He whispered, and Roman furrowed his brow, sparing a glance to his brother. Remus never spoke softly. "We're here to help you out of this hellhole."
"Why would either of you do that?"
Deceit snorted softly. It seemed neither dark side had the intention of the others hearing them. "Because Roman, we're not as heartless as your boyfriends to let you go hungry and let... this happen." Deceit gestured vaguely to Roman, and then to the rest of the room. "I mean, really, this looks almost like Repression's room now."
"Besides!" Roman didn't pull away when Remus began to run his fingers through his hair, and even leaned into his brother's touch. "You're too good for them, and we may or may not have prepared your favorite once we realized that they weren't saving a spot for you at their table."
Roman hesitantly rolled back over to meet their gazes. "You mean you're actually going to allow me to eat with you guys?"
"Oh, more than that!" Remus hummed happily, almost buzzing. Deceit rolled his eyes, patting Remus's head gently, and the side calmed immediately.
"We were thinking you could just move in."
Roman had never heard Deceit be so blunt before. He knew Deceit could tell the truth, he's known for a long while. He had just never thought Deceit would so openly do it. He swallowed thickly, forcing himself to sit up. Roman held fistfuls of his blanket though, as if grounding himself.
"You guys know that I'm uh, not interested in joining a relationship, right?"
Remus laughed, and Deceit smacked him over the head with his hat. "Yeah, we heard you're aromantic, yes?" Roman nodded. "Right. Yet another reason we want to help you out of here, we've seen the way you look whenever the others do anything romantic with you."
Remus scrunched his nose. "You always look so miserable."
He was quiet for a moment. "I am miserable."
"We won't pressure you to come with us," Deceit said gently, offering a hand to Roman, "but we wish to help you. So how about it? Wanna join the dark sides?"
Roman looked to his door, where he could hear the laughing of the others rise again. He took a slow breath and looked back to Deceit's hand. He shook it.

HUGE SPOILERS FOR THE NEW SW COMING UP
I’m going to tag this (and, on the very unlikely chance, any other spoilery posts I make about RoS, the new SW movie) with “wowow” (without quotations) because I don’t want to end up in the SW or RoS tag for a variety of reasons and last I’ve heard even if I were to do “geeky talks RoS” it might still show in the search/tags so, this is my way around it.
This originally had a few sentences saying that I’m not really emotionally invested in this movie because I’m not a huge SW fan but, hey, after writing this all up guess who’s just really fucking intensely angry? This writing is so bad it actually fucking hurts the original fucking SW and while I’m not a die hard fan, I am someone who can appreciate the importance of the original trilogy on the pop culture and movie making. And, wow, it is super not fucking okay, what this movie does to the original trilogy. Also, I haven’t seen the movie and you would literally have to pay me thousands of dollars at this point to do so; all this info comes from the wikipedia plot synopsis. Seriously, fuck this movie.
Before we get into the nitty gritty let’s take a second to note it’s really fucking dumb as fuck to have different directors and writers for a trilogy in general, let alone a SW trilogy. I don’t think it would have completely saved this movie but a lot of it is undoing the last movie so I think it would have been at least slightly better if it hadn’t felt the need to do that.
ANYWAY HERE’S 84 BULLET POINTS OF VITRIOL! May they be cathartic and/or hilarious for everyone. MAJOR SPOILERS INCOMING PEOPLE
the writers are so fucking unwilling to make Kylo Ren the true villain of the SW sequel trilogy that they bring back Palpatine, who was killed in the original trilogy
which, by the way, was a fucking huge moment in the original trilogy, as well as one of the most memorable
you know, because it’s the moment where Darth Vader turns his back on the dark side to save his son
so, hey, thanks for retroactively taking away from one of the most powerful moments in the the entire star wars series
(seriously, fuck every single person that was okay with this)
let’s just go ahead and put Kylo under the influence of another evil person
because then what he does isn’t really his fault
(fuck you, writers)
Rey is actually Palapatine’s granddaughter
she learns this through Kylo
because fuck you fans
and also because the writers can’t think of anything original
gotta have a male relative to kill or it wouldn’t be SW
i so fucking hoped that this was just Kylo fucking with Rey’s head
but, nope, then Rey remembers assassins killing her parents
(seriously, fuck you, writers)
Hux is a spy
which is a shit plot point to write in
it just doesn’t add anything to the story or to the any of the characters that we care about
you know what would have been awesome?
using a storm trooper who heard about Finn and realized that they, too, had a choice in whether to save or kill
I mean, they could have used Finn as a rallying force for storm troopers to realize that they have a choice, that they can choose to be more than they ever thought they could be
you know continuing the theme from TFA of how what makes us is our choices and actions, not where we come from
as well as echoing the theme of Return of the Jedi where Vader does the same thing
but, nope, they’d rather do this dumb as fuck twist with a white guy with barely any personality saving the day instead of using a black man to inspire people to stand up and say no
(because fuck you, Finn, apparently)
this missed opportunity is so fucking maddening because it would have been so fucking amazing
(you know, I thought this whole thing would be easier to read the second time; it’s actually worse, so much worse)
Rey kills Kylo
(fucking hell fucking yeah)
Rey heals Kylo because she feels Leia dying and I guess she feels bad or ?????
(fucking fuckity fucking fuck you fuck you fuck you, writers)
Luke appears as a force ghost to tell Rey that she should go defeat Palpatine like he defeated Vader
EXCEPT THAT LUKE DIDN’T FUCKING DEFEAT VADER
HOLY FUCKING FUCK DID THE WRITERS EVEN SEEING THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY
VADER DIED FROM PALPATINE’S LAST FUCKING ACTION AS VADER FUCKING KILLED HIM
EXCEPT OH WAIT NO HE DIDN’T BECAUSE FUCK THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY AND EVERYTHING IT STANDS FOR PALPATINE’S ALIVE NOW
holy fucking fuck this makes me so legitimately angry
not only is just bad as fuck writing but it’s literally taking away from the original trilogy
which are important movies not only for pop culture but for fucking filmmaking as a whole
(fucking fuck you for this entire plot thread in fucking particular you absolute fucking fuckers)
Kylo talks to a vision of Han and then he’s completely good again
you know like Vader turned good
you know, that huge moment in the original trilogy where Vader watches his son being tortured by Palpatine
and realizes that he has a choice here and for the first time in a very long time, decides to put someone over himself, to save instead of condemn, to be more than he ever thought he could be, to realize that caring for people is actually a strength not a weakness
and he kills Palpatine which in turn leads to Vader’s death which is important because it makes his last act, the last thing he did before he died, an act of compassion and love
EXCEPT OH WAIT HE DIDN’T KILL PALPATINE DID HE BECAUSE FUCK THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY
yep, they absolutely should be trying to draw parallels between Kylo’s redemption arc and Vader’s because they both have the same emotional impact what with Kylo having to be talked into making the compassionate, loving choice and Vader coming to the realization on his own
just such a good writing choice
seriously, though, can you just imagine if they’d done this in the original trilogy
half way through Return of the Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi’s ghost just fucking shows up to Vader and they have a heart-to-heart and suddenly Vader is good again
holy fucking shit can you just imagine?
(I’m running out of ways to say fuck you to the writers, just fuck them so much)
Rey kills Palpatine
you know, just like Luke killed Vader
BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT HAPPENED AFTER ALL
IT WASN’T PALPATINE KILLING VADER AS HIS FINAL ACT BECAUSE VADER HAD DECIDED TO CHOOSE COMPASSION AND MAKE HIS FINAL ACT AN ACT OF LOVE BY KILLING PALPATINE
EXCEPT OH WAIT PALPATINE ISN’T DEAD BECAUSE FUCK YOU ORIGINAL TRILOGY
(this movie hates the original trilogy just... so fucking much. so fucking much)
Rey dies
but then Kylo saves Rey by giving her his lifeforce and thus dies
DID I MENTION THAT THEY KISS BEFORE HE DIES
they literally killed Kylo twice in this fucking movie and both moments were just the most unfulfilling moments to happen in this entire disappointment of a movie
but anyway apparently the only ONLY WAY WOMEN GET SAVED IS BY ROMANTIC LOVE
KYLO AND LUKE BOTH GET SAVED BECAUSE OF FAMILY MEMBERS
but wait didn’t Rey save Kylo
only because of fucking Leia, so yeah, it’s still because of a fucking family member, not a romantic choice
AND IT’S NOT LIKE REY HAS MADE ANY CONNECTIONS IN THE EARLIER MOVIES THAT COULD HAVE ALSO BEEN USED
IT’S NOT LIKE YOU HAVE FINN WHO’S BEEN SHOWN TO BE ABLE TO AT LEAST TEMPORARILY HOLD HIS OWN AGAINST SOMEONE AS POWERFUL AS KYLO REN
FINN WHO LITERALLY WAS LEAVING TO SAVE HIMSELF IN TFA BECAUSE HE WAS DONE WITH FIGHTING WHICH, BY THE WAY, AS A STORM TROOPER WHO TURNED AGAINST EVERYTHING HE’D EVER KNOWN HE ABSOLUTELY DESERVED AND WAS AN ENTIRELY UNDERSTANDABLE THING TO DO
BUT AS SOON AS HE FINDS OUT THAT REY HAS BEEN CAPTURED HE FUCKING GOES TO SAFE
BECAUSE THEY ARE A FUCKING FOUND FAMILY BUT FUCK FOUND FAMILY I GUESS
IT’S NOT LIKE YOU COULD HAVE USED THAT LIGHT SABER BATTLE BETWEEN FINN AND KYLO TO HAVE BEEN A HINT THAT FINN HAS FORCE POWERS
AND YOU COULD HAVE HAD HIM HEAL REY WITHOUT KILLING HIMSELF
YOU KNOW, LIKE REY DID EARLIER IN THE MOVIE WITH KYLO
AND ALSO HAVE A BLACK MAN BE A POWERFUL FORCE USER
BUT NOPE THE ONLY HEALING POWER FOR WOMEN IS ROMANTIC LOVE AND BLACK MEN DON’T GET TO BE POWERFUL JEDIS IN THE SEQUEL TRILOGIES
(FUCK YOU SO FUCKING MUCH JUST FUCKING FUCK YOU TO A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY FROM THIS FRANCHISE AND IT’S FANS)
did you notice that there’s no fucking mention of Rose at fucking all
listen, even if you don’t like her character she fucking deserved better that this
if only because of all the absolute fucking racist and sexist as fuck shit that she got for the second movie
by making her such a minor character that she’s not even mentioned in the plot synopsis
the writers have, whether intentionally or not, validated the fans who did this and their absolutely fucking disgusting behavior
AND FUCK THAT ALL THE FUCKING WAY FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU
Fuck every single person who was involved in writing this. There’s not a single beat or moment in this movie that isn’t ruined by some other moment in it, it ruins everything in the first two movies, and it literally retroactively ruins some of the most powerful moments of the original trilogy. Fucking toss this fucking piece of shit in the trash, burn it, salt the ash that’s left, mix it in some molten medal, create a metal hand giving the middle finger, go to the mariana trench, and then fucking throw the metal hand into its depths to never be seen again. This is some of the worst writing I have ever fucking read and I consume an obscene amount of shitty horror movies so I have a lot of fucking experience with bad writing.
In conclusion, to the writers, let me say FUCKING FUCK YOU FUCK YOU STRAIGHT INTO THE FUCKING MARIANA TRENCH BECAUSE YOU’RE NO BETTER THAN THE FUCKING TRASH YOU WROTE AND YOU SHOULD BE PUT SOMEWHERE WHERE YOU CAN’T FUCKING TOUCH ANOTHER FUCKING MOVIE

Melodic Minor - Remedy In The Backyard.
A single that combines warm melodies and edgy energy in perfectly balanced doses.
Summary: Melodic Minor just released a brand new album, which combines stunning compositional skills and inventing songwriting. The project has a warm, big and cinematic tone, which tips the hat to some of the most evocative composers of our time! Keep reading to learn more.
One of the most distinctive aspects of Melodic Minor’s music is definitely their eclectic and one-of-a-kind approach. This band has a really unique tone, with fantastic melodies and forward-thinking song arrangements, which hint at the group’s versatility. Their sound is huge, cinematic and highly emotional, often inspired by composers the likes of Hans Zimmer or John Williams, only to mention but a few. However, the spirit of the project’s music also makes me think of artists like Sigur Ros or Ryuichi Sakamoto, only to mention some.
Recently, Melodic Minor set out to bring a new composition to life. The project’s most recent release is titled “Remedy In The Backyard,” and it is a beautiful instrumental tune. This song stands out for its modern sound, but although the production is quite polished, it is never overproduced, allowing a lot of wonderfully organic and “human” elements to really add liveliness to the mix. The first thing you’ll notice is certainly the high quality of this production, in terms of sonic aesthetics. The instrumental mix is balanced and direct, with a really cool overall ambiance, which adds a lot of excitement to the track. In particular, there are some really stunning reverb tones and textures, which really add some fantastic excitement to this wonderful release.
Those beautiful keys and piano melodies? Completely unforgettable. Each note is like a little sentence, and if you read them all together, you’ll find out that there is a beautiful poem at the end of it. This is music that connects emotionally with the listeners, speaking directly to the heart and the soul: no words are needed, and it does not matter what language you speak: “Remedy In The Backyard” will immediately connect with you as a listener.
Melodic Minor’s music appeals to a global audience because their themes, melodies, and ideas are truly universal. There is a strong sense of vision, creativity and emotional acuteness, which really fuels their sound. “Remedy In The Backyard” is no different. Sonically speaking, the sound of “Remedy In The Backyard” is very mercurial and kaleidoscopic. Melodic Minor set out to use sounds much like an impressionist painter would use colors on a canvas. It is all about connecting with people, and portraying vivid emotions! Instead of colors on a canvas, Melodic Minor uses many different instruments to achieve their one-of-a-kind tone. In fact, the group used 16 instruments on this release, spread out through about 32 tracks of recording!
The sheer scope of the production will immediately capture your imagination. The music has a larger-than-life feel, almost hitting the speaker in a big cinematic way. These sounds are very evocative and create a strong texture, rather than just focusing on a melodic line to remember. The fact that there are many layers to this release really allow the artist to achieve an extra sense of depth, making for a strong and balanced tone.
This track, in fact, utilizes various sounds, as it evolves throughout its duration. Over the span of slightly over 8 minutes, Melodic Minor will take you hand in hand on a fantastic musical journey, where everything is in its right place.
In addition to the personable and edgy performance value, this release is also quite distinctive because of the sheer quality of the production. The mix is balanced and very detail-oriented, making for a lively, edgy and stark sonic approach. In other words, there are many subtle nuances in this release, which really add to the richness of the track when summed up together. The frequency spectrum of the mix is also very balanced, with a tight, yet deep low end working wonders along with a smooth top end, which adds a sense of clarity to the music. Sure, pristine sound quality is not everything. There are many amazing tracks that were recorded on cheap take recorders or simple means. However, in this case, a great sound quality definitely helps.
I really can’t find any prominent negative side to this release, even if I were to dissect it on a technical standpoint. If I really had to think of something, I would perhaps say that it would be cool to hear more of a dynamic ramp up in the song, with more interaction between the various instruments - But that’s definitely more about my personal taste and it is completely a creative choice, not really a shortcoming of this track at all.
Having said that, this is just minor hair-splitting and nit-picking. Overall, this is a fantastic release, and it is very enjoyable in all of its details and charming melodies. This song is a beautiful, soothing melody with a nice nocturnal vibe and a dream-like set of harmonies which will definitely charm listeners from all walks of life. It doesn’t matter whether you are a fan of rock, rap, pop or classical music. You are certainly going to be able to fully appreciate the amazing nuances of this beautiful song.
There are many contributing factors that make the sound truly excellent: partly, it is due to the expertly crafted mix, and partly due to the clever arrangements and spontaneous performance. This release is a combination of passion, focus, and vision, and it combines instinctive artistry with true technical expertise, bridging the gaps between the best of both worlds.
This is the kind of track that will positively surprise you for its sonic variety, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat due to its catchy, yet unpredictable arrangement. I always love to hear from artists who set the bar higher and push the envelope when it comes to their productions: this certainly appears to be the case!

In-Depth – Living with the A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus Steel
On October 24, 2019, A. Lange & Söhne came up with something entirely new, an important step for this usually rather conservative high-end watch brand; it was a sports watch, made in stainless steel, with a bracelet – 3 unprecedented features for ALS that made this very watch, the Odysseus, quite a topic of conversation. During the recent digital Watches & Wonders, the German brand introduced another Odysseus, now in white gold and not on a metal bracelet, but on a leather or rubber strap. It’s been almost a year since I first saw the steel Odysseus, and recently Lange gave me the opportunity to wear it for some time. So, it is time to give it a second thought / look and to report on my experience while properly living with it, not only putting it on the wrist for a photo shoot.
Introductory note
What exactly is the Odysseus? Well, we can’t skip the ‘luxury sports watch’ topic… With A. Lange & Söhne’s main competitors – AP, PP and VC – all historical members of this watch category, the immediate reaction when ALS launched the Odysseus was to compare it with the Royal Oak, the Nautilus and the Overseas, the three definitive icons of the 1970s-inspired, integrated bracelet, luxury sports watch gang. Last year it took me a minute to realise, and even today my position towards the luxury sports watches and the Odysseus remains the same: comparing the Odysseus with these three icons is a mistake.
The Holy Trinity of luxury sports watches – Overseas, Nautilus, Royal Oak… And no, to me, the ALS Odysseus isn’t playing in the same category.
For starters, the Odysseus is NOT a luxury sports watch with integrated bracelet. It is not a 1970s-inspired watch, it is not an ultra-thin time-and-date timepiece, it is not a watch with a barrel-shaped case (like all three mentioned above), it is not a watch with an octagonal/porthole bezel, it doesn’t feature screws or decorative elements on the bezel. So, no, I’m not comparing the Odysseus to these 3 watches – and you know me, I love luxury sports watches.
So what is Odysseus? To make it short, it is a sports watch made of steel produced by A. Lange & Söhne and featuring most of the original design and technical cues of the brand. It is THE sports Lange, the weekend Lange, the holiday Lange, the daily Lange, the Lange that you can wear all the time. And, in the brand’s history, that is a big first, as in 25+ years of existence A. Lange & Söhne has not produced any watch that could be called sports watch. Yes, there have been a few steel versions of the Lange 1, but that’s another story. To summarize, Odysseus is an important new chapter for the brand, but not one to be directly compared to the Nautilus or the Royal Oak. That being said, it is time to move on to my experience with it.
The daily Lange
Up until now, an A. Lange & Söhne was a luxurious dress watch with Haute Horlogerie credentials, featuring a complicated high-end movement and precious metal cases. It was mostly worn on a leather strap, it was not meant to be water-resistant, it was meant to be this relatively delicate, mechanically-demonstrative Saxon piece of horology. Well, the Odysseus isn’t entirely denying this DNA – far from that, actually – but adds a new dimension to ALS’ usual way to deal with watchmaking. It is the Lange that you’ll wear anytime, anywhere, with anything. It’s the Lange that will stay on your wrist when your precious Lange 1 (or Datograph, or Zeitwerk, or…) would have been in your watch box. It is the Lange that ou wear when jumping in the pool. It is the Lange that you’ll wear this summer while drinking a glass of wine at the beach while wearing a linen shirt, shorts and loafers. And still, this watch comes with everything you’d expect from a Lange.
Odysseus is nothing else than a sports Lange, and it doesn’t try to be what it isn’t…
To understand the Odysseus and spot the resemblance with other watches from ALS, follow me and try to remove the bracelet from the equation. Once you’ve done that, look at the case and the case only. And then, this becomes clearer. Odysseus has a typical Lange case, but made of stainless steel. The watch has a fairly compact diameter, with 40.5mm measured and a height of 11.1mm. The shape is identical to most Lange watches, with a round, convex polished bezel and a central container that follows the same shape too – at least on the left-hand side. And then there are the lugs… Yes, this watch has classical lugs and not a lug module that extends from the case like a Nautilus or a RO. And if you look at these lugs, they are shaped just like a Datograph or a Lange 1, just slightly more robust.
The right-hand side of the case is certainly what sets this watch apart from the rest of ALS’ production. To ‘masculinize’ the look of the watch and give it a sportier identity, the brand uses a clever trick. What could appear as a crown guard is, actually a ‘module’ that hides two pushers. Instead of having two recessed correctors in the caseband, the pushers are oversized and become an integral part of the design. And not only this is a very nice visual feature, but it also makes the correction of the day and date complications extremely easy and pleasant. As you can see, the case isn’t very slim and has a certain robustness, something that I personally prefer in this context – don’t get me wrong, I love ultra-thin watches, but considering the overall design of this watch, I think this 11mm height suits the watch.
Besides the use of stainless steel for the case, the Odysseus comes with a combination of a screw-down crown and a screwed caseback, guaranteeing a reassuring 120m water-resistance. What’s the point of this waterproofness? Well, on paper, it could handle more than just a jump in the pool and the Odysseus could even withstand some deeper salty waters. Would I, or you, do it? I would, but many wouldn’t, so the whole point of this 120 meters water resistance is to remove risks from the equation, to bring peace of mind, so you’re sure that wherever you’ll wear your Lange (at the beach, while sailing, at the poolside when one of your friends has the pleasant idea to push you in the water…), it will survive. It makes the Odysseus the Lange to be used – and abused if you’d want to.
The dial and the useful functions
The dial of the Odysseus is following the same idea that we’ve seen with the case. Yes, it is sportier and yet, it features so many elements that are 100% A. Lange & Söhne. For this introductory model, ALS went for a safe dark blue colour, which suits the stainless steel case perfectly, offering contrast and cold tones for a sporty feeling – and also something different from the usual silvery-white dials produced by the brand in the Lange 1 or Saxonia collections.
The dial is well divided in clear sectors, emphasized by the use of different textures and steps. As such, it is readable at a glance, with hands and indexes that are greatly proportioned – the hands are the perfect length and coincide with the indexes or the minute track on the inner flange. The central area has a nice grained texture that avoids reflections and attracts the attention on the rest of the dial; the polished, bright hands and markers, which are all filled with Super-LumiNova for a very decent nighttime legibility.
This was for the sports part of the Odysseus. Now, there’s the Lange part of the watch, which is basically all the rest. Fonts, logo, inscriptions, shape of the markers/hands, position of the indications… everything is in line with the brand’s design codes and immediately makes the link with the rest of the collection. There’s no doubt about the provenance of this watch, despite its casual attire.
What’s even more Lange are the three sub-indications. Yes, these large windows for the date and the weekday might cause some debates, and so does the presence of a subsidiary seconds dial in the sports context, however, it is also a way to blend this watch in the Saxon tradition, as well as providing useful indications on a daily basis. And there’s this utterly cool connection with the Zeitwerk – guilty, I love these two windows. The one on the right side is Lange’s oversized date, displayed on two discs. The one of the left is the day of the week, again a practical indication when wearing this watch in a business context. And I can easily imagine that future versions can host a second time zone for instance by using these windows… And that would make a great addition to the collection.
Legible, clear, still entirely true to Lange’s styling, the dial is, to me, one of the most successful elements of this Odysseus. And I’m also very curious to see the white gold/grey dial version in the metal, as its dial looks even more captivating.
A new, coherent movement
Considering this sportier context, Lange made the choice for a new and more robust movement. At the expense of repeating myself, we’re not in an ultra-thin luxury sports watch context here and using one of Lange’s existing thin movements, to me, wouldn’t be coherent. The choice of a larger, more solid and slightly thicker movement does make sense here. And so does the central rotor and not an off-centred 3/4 oscillating weight or a micro-rotor.
So, the choices for this new calibre L155.1 Datomatic were focussed on daily use and resistance. The self-winding itself is a no brainer, as it makes full sense in this context. Another proof of this new orientation is the transversal balance bridge, which replaces the usual balance cock used in Lange movements – a transversal bridge offers more stability and resistance to shocks than a cock, held in place to a single point. And there’s the 4Hz frequency, more modern and more adapted to a sports watch.
The movement is clearly a Lange movement. Visually, no doubt about its provenance, with a 3/4 place, blued screws, thin Glahütte ribbings and a hand-engraved motif on the balance bridge. Some traditional features, such as the swan-neck regulation – which has been given some space atop the balance bridge – and the screwed gold chatons have been kept too.
Finally, even though the watch is more casual and encased in stainless steel, this calibre L155.1 Datomatic is finished and decorated in the exact same way as any other Lange movement – meaning to an Haute Horlogerie level, with hand-polished bevels, pèrlage, black polished steel parts. The modern touch is seen on the rotor, which is dark grey coated and equipped with a heavy platinum mass to provide greater inertia.
The complex bracelet
This was certainly the most debated element on this Odysseus… But there are two sides to a coin. One side is subjective and does with the look/design of this bracelet. The second, far more objective, has to do with quality and practicality and here, Lange performs well – to put it mildly. This bracelet is a great example of practicality, solidity, cleverness and comfort.
Design is personal and, if you ask me, I’m good with this bracelet and how it blends with the case. Certainly, it is a bit bulky and large, which is due to the width of the first links – which follow the sides of the lugs. I’m not going to argue this point; to each his own. Instead, I’m going to focus on rational elements.
As you can see, the bracelet is an elaborate architecture, with complex facets, all finished to an impressive extent. The flat surfaces are finely brushed and all the edges are enlightened by a polished bevel. The bracelet is flexible, yet feels rock-solid once secured to the wrist. No doubt, the bracelet of the Odysseus is impressive and echoes with Lange’s usual quality standards. All surfaces are smooth and this bracelet is a joy to wear.
What adds to the comfort is the presence of an appreciable precision adjustment mechanism in the clasp. By pressing the round ALS logo on the clasp while you still wear the watch, you have the ability to extend the bracelet length up to 7mm, very practical in summer, when your wrist becomes a tiny bit bigger due to warm weather or sports activities. The downside of this feature is a clasp that is fairly thick. Two pushers on the side allow opening the clasp. The construction is neat and feels like well-oiled machinery.
Thanks to the sequence above, you can discover this bracelet’s last feature: a self-adjusting system for the initial sizing of the length. Thanks to small recessed pushers on the outer links, and to the tool that is provided by Lange in the box, you can adjust the bracelet to your wrist without having to visit an authorized dealer or a boutique. Certainly, this seems like quite a complex puzzle at first but once the user manual understood, it is pretty easy to do and well-conceived.
Verdict
As the owner of several watches that can be categorized as ‘luxury sports watches’, I know exactly how they feel on the wrist, what to expect from them, how and where I can wear them… and thus I’m fairly confident in saying that the Odysseus isn’t one of these watches. It plays in its own league, it doesn’t try to imitate what’s already existing and what’s currently in demand. This is a steel sports A. Lange & Söhne, period.
What’s my take after extensively wearing the watch? I love the design and functions. I love the fact that it has its own personality and that, at the same time, it retains most of the iconic elements of a Lange watch. I love the comfort and the clever systems, both the integrated pushers for the day-date and the bracelet. But as I said in an interview with the brand’s CEO, my only regret is that I can’t wear it on a rubber or leather strap…
Price and availability
The A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus in stainless steel is part of the permanent collection and isn’t limited. It can now be ordered from authorized dealers and boutiques, however with very limited availability. Finding one new, at retail price from a boutique, will be quite challenging.
The steel Odysseus (ref. 363.179) retails at EUR 28,000, which is in line with other steel sports watches from high-end watchmakers and the impressive level of execution. More details at www.alange-soehne.com.

18 blond hair with dark roots ideas
Blonde hair with dark roots is a technique of hair coloring that allows natural brunette roots to blend seamlessly with blond hair. This trend, also known as the Shadow Root Method, has solved the dreaded growth phase that is ruining our freshly colored light strands and the associated high levels of maintenance.
Ashley Benson, Diane Kruger and Kristen Stewart have thrown away the packed blonde look and stuck to this budget-friendly, but absolutely fantastic hair color trend! It's time to put an end to endless repairs and save time and money without putting your mane in jeopardy!
The benefits of rooted blondes do not stop with the low maintenance. Keeping your dark roots gives the hair an ultra-cold contrast and a natural-looking depth and dimension, so you can style it easily!
Step into this modern trend and embrace your roots as you try one of those looks on blonde hair with dark roots!
Warm blonde with little roots
How would you describe this look?
This look was inspired by a sip of ice-cold soda. It gives us all the vivid beach atmosphere without turning into gold or ashes – just a boho-beige feeling down the line. The cut is simple and yet effortless, so that the hair is particularly lively! Long, rounded edges with perfectly long, mixed layers. It looks great, looks straightforward and is still tough with a subtle wave.
My favorite part of this look is the babylight mix. It gives us a ton of brightness and mixes so effortlessly for a seamless outgrowth with its shadow root!
Any advice for someone considering it?
This look is perfect for my mid maintenance girls. Those who want to feel particularly bright, but still want to have a lively feeling. The required care is mediocre and requires a root lubricant or slight repair every 8-10 weeks.
Ideal for my customers who like to wear or take off. This style looks great with beach waves, straight, air-dried and even in a dirty bun. It is very flattering on most face shapes, especially round surfaces. The everyday life with this style looks something like this:
Use Kenra Hair Spray and it's a 10-wonder leave-in to prepare the hair after it has been washed and dried with the towel. Unwrap the hair with a damp brush and style it at will. My favorite is to dry off dry and add a beach wave with a curling iron or iron, packing small sections.
So, if you have a low-maintenance daily routine but do not mind taking care of your color, this is a fantastic option!
Honey blond with dark brown roots
How would you describe this look?
This is a warm blonde balayage with a deep contrasting base color. This client wanted to see this depth at the root to make her blonde more dramatic. I love the strong contrast of the bright ends and the dark root because the mix is still so natural and it will grow out beautifully. The long layers also give the color scheme a graceful course.
Any advice for someone considering it?
This look is a great way for brunettes to get blonde. The root color and tone still complements the natural coloring of the client – skin tone, eyebrows and eye color. Also, this look is lived, so that the care is required only as often as you want to raise the blonde.

Dark roots to pale blonde ombre
How would you describe this look?
This is a classic ombré, so it's about really seeing this transition from dark to light. My favorite thing about this technique is that it works with all hair colors from natural to fashion colors. My clients also love that when this look grows out, it stays mixed, so they do not have to be in the salon every 4 weeks to restore their roots.
For the haircut, I left her length very long and gave her long layers. The layers help to give style and take the mass out of thick hair. I always recommend to my clients layers with long hair, especially if it is very thick, as in the photo.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Whether you live in the salon or are very easy-care, this rooty look will work for you. I recommend this look whenever my client is looking for a change, but not too drastically. Ombré adds the perfect amount of dimension and you can make it as subtle or as dramatic as you want.
Integrate this look into your morning routine. It's easy and only takes 5-10 minutes and you look fabulous all day long.
To make this look, I took a large curling iron and wavy sections in opposite directions. To help my curls stay, I like to use the Aveda Texture Tonic – it is a sea salt spray with cane sugar and gives the hair the perfect texture for the perfectly lived waves. Let the curls rest for a few minutes and then brush through with a large comb.
Dark roots. White blond hair
How would you describe this look?
This look is a very dark-rooted blond melt. Ash blond hair with dark roots is a darker color combination for women who want to stay away from lighter blondes. This customer has a natural level 5 and has always wanted to be blonde. She wanted to get darker. I suggested a dark-rooted blonde, so that her natural color could penetrate, without endangering her blonde completely. We used a 4A in her regrowth and combed it into her blonde to give this molten look instead of a hard painted line. In the front, I've put a few slides along the hairline to highlight the beautiful platinum and create this "coin". After processing, I then toned her hair with Matrix Color Sync 10p 10v and a shot of violet from the vinyl collection. We've added 18 "tape in extensions to add some length to their ends and voila.
That's what I love about a rooted blonde who offers just the right thing for variety without having to go completely dark. My client has shoulder-length hair, very thick (which is great for lighting because her hair can handle the process), and we always do the shallow iron shafts near the beach, leaving out the ends to give this "just so woken" look. Her cut is a long, multi-layered cut with a light facial border. She has a round face, so she holds her front longer than her chin, giving the illusion of a thinner, oval face. She is super active, plays hockey, is a mother with two little boys, works full time and only has to rework her highlights every 6-8 weeks. It is ideal for women or men who have a natural dark base and do not want their hair highlighted or dyed every 4 weeks after regrowth.
Any advice for someone considering it?
It takes time and money. Products are the key.
My client had come three times before she discovered this beautiful platinum. She understands that purple shampoo, heat protectants, professional products and regular cuts make all the difference.
I always recommend blond or not, heat protectants. They are the oven gloves for your hair. Also turn down the heat, take smaller sections and go slower with your flat irons.
Dry shampoo is your best friend! The more you wash, the drier your hair will be. Use oil in your ends. A little bit goes a long way. Only a small drop that spreads through your ends will really help to give some moisture back to those blond curls.
Even blond is not for everyone and that's fine, but you can always find a rooted color that works for you and your skin tone. Ask your stylist which tones would best suit your skin.
Platinum Blonde with Natural Roots
How would you describe this look?
I have many girls who like blonde hair with dark roots or at least that tone. I would call it a more natural white. Natural white means that you have the bright whites, but there is still a little heat. The dimension in this color makes the highlighted pieces appear even brighter. Can not have light without darkness, right?
My favorite part in creating such an appearance is the coin! It's the framing around the face. It is the brightest piece in her hair. There your attention is drawn. We've done a rejuvenation / facial framing around the face to accentuate the coin and give it body shape.
The Shadow Root is another favorite of mine! It makes the highlight seamless and creamy. It also gives customers more flexibility in planning their salon visits. That makes life easier, because you can have your cake and eat it too. Bright, white, strong hair without care. As far as styling is concerned, we decided to give her a nice, elegant blowout.
Again, I love when my clients choose to go the sleek route. It's different. It's not just waves, but do not get me wrong. On a color like this, you have to smooth it out to see that beautiful blend! It just wants to be gorgeous!
Any advice for someone considering it?
Although this look is pretty easy to care for, your journey to become that blonde needs a bit of T.L.C. Steps to becoming that blonde include all the pre-treatments Malibu C, Olaplex, Deep Conditioning treatments and everything that makes your hair the strongest version of itself, so it's ready to be brightened!
I personally think that everyone can be blonde. It's really just the fact if you'll keep up with her or not. Take your masks and Olaplex once a week at home and an occasional shine in the salon once a month to get this beautiful blonde. My most important tip for clients and stylists is Malibu C.
No matter where you live, you need Malibu C. It removes all the hard water minerals on your hair. If you live in Cali, your hair needs Malibu. If you live in Nashville, with our crazy hard water, your hair needs Malibu! I personally have many blonde customers and they all get a Malibu treatment before their service!
If you're discussing how to get blond, do it! Ask your stylist and get some opinions on what he thinks is best! Would you like to be in the salon once a month or a few times a year? Everyone can be blonde! It's just about finding the perfect blonde that fits your maintenance plan!
Strawberry blond with natural roots
How would you describe this look?
This cut adds the perfect movement to show all the beautiful tones. The layers are soft and subtle, so they do not affect the overall length and thickness.
The thing I love most about it is that my amazing client gets her ends cleaned each time she gets her paint. In this way, I can ensure that her hair stays healthy and fresh between services when she leaves the salon.
Any advice for someone considering it?
This haircut is perfect for anyone who wants to maintain the length and increase the thickness. There is such a gentle movement that it can be easily curled to stand out, or flat ironed to conform. This style is ideal for someone looking for easy daily grooming, but occasionally a sexy look.
Dirty blonde with natural dark roots
How would you describe this look?
This is a balayage mix up with more ombré below. I love how seamless the mix is, because it will enable her to grow for months with little to no maintenance. The way the shine complements its natural root is also popular with me. I love warmer sounds lately and I feel that this one is just right.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Definitely sure you want to commit yourself to a few brighter pieces! This is a more dramatic look for someone who starts with natural hair. Also, for someone with a finer hair type, I would suggest lessening the concentration of blonde on the ends (keeping more natural pieces to the ends helps keep a fuller look).
Dark roots. Blond hair
How would you describe this look?
Most of it is the root shadow. The color melts between the roots and the lengths is just so soft! You can see it perfectly because it's a really long and smooth hairstyle. Besides, it has a length so that we have a perfect reflection.
Any advice for someone considering it?
It is best if you have healthy hair, if you want to have a look like this! You have to do a lot of hair rituals. My favorite product for this style is Blond Absolu by Kérastase. Keeping your hair healthy can be a truly natural look for smooth and curly hair.
Golden blonde with shadow roots
Stylist Coralie made conspicuous changes to the dark roots by comparing them to a more yellowish blonde.
Dark blond with black roots
Do not let the brunette keep you from being a golden girl! A dynamic combination that is a sure hit.
Light blond with darker roots
It's like the blonde naturally grew out of your hair! Balayage blond on dark hair is a beautiful combination, excellent to try a new color without the drastic change.
Ash blond with brown roots
If you're still a "beginner's blonde," dye your hair a few inches from the roots to make your hair healthier, and you'll instantly have this brunette-blonde ombre.
Blond balayage with melted roots
Unlike normal colorations, Balayage makes it look as if the colors used were fused together. Here we have milk and white chocolate that are simply mixed together to make this stunning piece.
Silver blond with mature roots
Darker roots due to natural causes (hair growing out) look so seamless. The silver diffused so well that it is difficult to tell where the color began.
Icy blonde with straight roots
Stylist Krystle made this balayage so spectacular that the platinum and brown roots were so soft.
Root Caramel Blonde (Bronze)
The fine line between blonde and brunette looks so beautiful. Toffee sweet that is not bitter but just deliciously good!
Roots on sun kissed blond hair
The only time that sunburn is acceptable is when it's gorgeous on your hair! The colorist Jessica hit so well that we can not even say if it was done in a salon or under the sun.
Champagne blond hair with dark roots
Try a new color as you grow your old hair out!
