so i finally bit the bullet and read hauntingly and let me just say…. it left me damaged and depressed in the best way possible. and what i mean by this is that, well, sometimes i can’t really see a redemption for voldemort as truly achievable or believable. not to say that i don’t think it can happen, but it’s��� an extremely ambitious goal to set for oneself. i guess voldemort would truly have to mean it and be committed heart and soul — hehe see what i did there — to trying to better himself as a person. and while that is also achievable — i think that’s what you were aiming for in this fic, right? — there’s always going to be those external influences and unpredictable factors which could so easily sway the progress of said redemption. essentially, what i think he would need is time. so lest he retreats into the siberian wilderness for however long it takes him to reconstruct himself as a person from the inside out, i don’t see a lot of people granting him this favour. of course, this would be the case in a “voldemort is still very much a public, well known figure and a war criminal” scenario. i’m not taking into account him disappearing and then changing identities, staging his own death etc.

just voldemort — somehow realising he loves harry and somehow deciding that that is enough reason to shift his methods and maybe some of his beliefs.

long rant aside though, what i am really curious about is: do you tend to explore multiple versions of voldemort through your fics? i mean, is he virtually the same person, but at different ages?

for example, would you say tom in blood&gold has the same mental constitution and personality as voldemort in hauntingly? do you see them as the same version of voldemort, just tom being younger?

or do you think there’s many many facets to him as a character — and consequently you’re exploring as many versions as possible, building from the handful of traits and beliefs that are detrimental to the very essence of tom riddle?

I don’t think of them all as the same person… well I guess I do? I mean, they are and they aren’t, the same way any of us are simultaneously the same people and yet entirely different based on our ages and where we’re at in life. So yes and no. But it’s easy to take Tom/voldemort at any point in his life and write him differently according to how you want your story to go, because we only know so much about him from canon. I think it’s fair to say that a young TR is going to be incredibly different from his 70 something year old counterpart, but if things had gone differently for him, he may have never been that counterpart but something else, soooo that’s more to your second point. Many facets for his character, lots potential. But that could be said for just about anyone, really!

I think he’s really well written, and the route differences and the way his will shifts depending on the circumstances are so compelling to me. I think about this all the time but it’s in more than just “in the lower roots, Atou refuses to face the truth and the humanity of those around him, more and more.” It’s also how he chooses to handle things in each ending.

in A root, he places his priority on saving Shinano and in being there for him, but he doesn't confront his own past, and focuses on the current moment instead. That’s why in that ending, nothing is resolved (as seen by the pink hair), but Shinano and Atou are sticking together, with Shinano staying in the Nagoya office.

In B root, he doesn’t have the information to save Shinano (or he’s chosen not to believe in him). He abandons the reason why he went to EHRI/Path to Empireo in the first place. His will is to seek a normal life, and for things to go back to normal. He doesn’t care anymore about the past, or about saving Shinano. And that’s why he ends up with Noa-Nina, in the end. The desperate attempt to pretend that it’s okay, and that they’ve reclaimed that peaceful dream (and he knows it’s a dream, and that he’s running away. He just doesn’t want to confront it).

In C, it’s Nina. The loss of Karen and the others meant he was desperate to save the one person he still has a chance to. So he abandoned himself, in favor of saving her in any way that he can. I still need to replay C and D, so my thoughts are a lot less coherent there ^^; I'll write again once I finish replaying those two roots.

In E? He loses everything. Haruki atou runs and runs away until all he has left to run from is himself. He runs and he fails and he watches everyone die ^_^ he denies the humanity of the path to Empireo/EHRI members and denies any connection to them. Refusing the truth as everything falls apart around him. I love E root and I will talk about it again but it’s soooo <3!!! the circumstances changing his mindset and his will growing weaker and weaker until he just doesn't want to do it anymore!! kill everybody fuck it we ball alpha take the reins!!! AND CALAMITYRUI!!!!

Even in S vs S+! he accepts all aspects of himself, and in doing so, he has the opportunity to save Reiji. He accepts Origin, and he rewrites what Hatsutori had planned. I went on a tangent but I like atou and I like the variations of his will and his decisions in all the endings!! It's a really important facet for me! Haruki Atou worldwide I love that guy

HARUKI ATOU HAS TWO HANDS AND TOO MANY LOVE INTERESTS!! My favorite pairing is him and Shinano (atou please give ur doggy a kiss please please plea--) and i've talked about them a lot before! other characters I ship with atou include:

Kanou! Atoukanou sweep I think they’re so fun! I love the banter, the layers of lies and yet they both understand each other. The murder. The Note. 'Kouji Asou' being the only one to understand Kanou, and the only one that he trusts with his will. Kanou’s curse protecting him. The Note. I like those guys a lot <3

Rui! Domestic best friends who are forever comfortable with each other! They understand each other! They trust each other!!

Nina! I think this one is less popular but C root is compelling to me and B root grew on me bc it’s the funniest ending to show other people. The chorus of pain and agony every time I watch B root makes me laugh. I think they could be cute,,

Aiba! This is a background one for me so i don't feel super strongly about it, but I replayed lately and it’s cute?? Aiba lives in every root, so Atou doesn't need to worry about him, and they stay in contact in every root too,,

My Nonromantic OTP for this character:

ISOI FAMILY SWEEP!!! The dynamics between reiji-haruki-sanemitsu are so compelling to me!! It’s complicated and difficult and it’s so fun!!! Layers and layers of unspoken words! Haruki being pissed at snmt and snmt’s reluctance and difficulty to even MEET with haruki, meanwhile haruki and snmt both have one favorite and his name is reiji isoi 🫶 The S root conversation vs the S+ one makes me so crazy,,, I like those guys a lot.

My unpopular opinion about this character:

It’s so awkward answering this bc I’m not sure this fandom is big enough that any of my opinions are “unpopular” more than just “my read of haruki may not line up with these 2 other peoples reads” 😭 and I don’t know Korean or Chinese so I’ve got no idea on the average fandom opinions there… I guess it’s a bit of a cop out answer ^^;

I've certainly had moments where my reads on characters or situations end up drastically different than what i've seen from others, but I don't think I've had such a visceral reaction with Atou opinions? At least, not to the scale where I'd consider any of my opinions 'unpopular'.

!SPOILERS FOR SAE PALACE, SHIDO PALACE, THIRD SEMESTER!

in terms of their conflicting masks:

them trying to cast aside their masks of 'kasumi' and 'detective prince' post-canon

like for akechi i think it would be a knee jerk reaction to go into detective prince mode when he wants to feel control over a situation. did akechi ever wish he was either only the detective prince or only the black mask? because yes, robin hood is the mask that he wore to fool everyone, but wasnt robin hood the hero he wished he was when he still had something to protect?

was loki the mask he wore to fool himself into thinking he could be a single-minded agent of vengence, and to hide the boy who just wanted to belong? basically, i think loki and robin hood are both masks and his true personae.

as for sumire, i think she would second guess herself, wondering if the words, habits, and maybe even thoughts were truly hers or her sister's. in those months that she spent as kasumi, are they still the traces of a ghost, or can she call those actions her own? because the way i understand it, maruki literally overwrote her reality, its not a simple case of 'pretending to be another person'. sumire's persona does end up being kasumi's spirit, so theres a part of her that she always carries on inside her.

they're both sick of pretending to be someone else, but how do they deal with just being themselves?

in terms of their relationship with their 'rivals':

sumire and akechi wanted to be equal to kasumi and akira respectively, while the latter two already saw them as rivals. they felt inferior to them, and maybe even hated them at one point, but thats just worse isnt it? because kasumi and akira would never hate them.

they have to deal with the guilt of being envious and resentful of the people they love and admire the most. this is obv just one facet of the issues they had to deal with but damn no wonder their coping mechanisms are shit lmao

conversely, the contrast between akechi's steadfast determination to break the 'false' reality and sumire's turbulent acceptance of the 'true' reality is soooo good and both things mean so much and make perfect sense for their character arcs

i need content of them post-canon just being hanging out man. ik akechi was quite abrasive to sumire in maruki's palace, but theres no fucking way he doesnt have grudging respect for her, and i think while sumire would be like YOU TRIED TO SHOOT SENPAI??!! she's the most likely to kinda understand lol...atleast, understand the nature of conflicting feelings

oooh and is it any coincidence that they dont agree with the idealogy of the phantom thieves? i think not. they could have some similar patterns of thinking.

mark's character is soooo 🥺🥺 i absolutely love how he offers reassurance consistently whether there is a need for it or not - he doesn't even bother to ask whether she needs/wants it, he just offers it and that's so sweet of him 😭 i find myself falling in love with him (ive never been mark biased; always acknowledged that he was attractive but never thought he was my type) but i dont know if im falling in love with the character youve made for him or the actual mark lee?! (a convenient excuse to watch all their content again 👀)

Yeah, I also personally do prefer bottom Will / top Mike, but who do like to switch on occasion for variety, since that feels right for me. I always say preferences are fine because that's realistic in real life, and since we (probably?) won't ever know preferences in the canon characters, if you can write it well and make your HCs - go for it. No fighting. I'm pretty secure in my characterizations. But exploring different viewpoints is worthwhile. Are we having fun and being kind? It's playtime and we don't actually have to share our toys. We can just duplicate the dolls and play our own way with our backs turned to each other, casting a sneaky glance over the shoulder if we so want. Weird metaphor. Not what you asked for. You asked for fic recs.

Now, while I enjoyed this fic and it's one of the first I read for Byler, and so well written, I don't necessarily agree with all the characterizations. Almost treat it as an original story inspired by the characters to me at this point, no shade, just personal opinion. But it's still so good. Very realistic teenage relationship progression which I really appreciated. And the sex is well portrayed very well written. so good - Praise Kink!! we beat the odds together - Older Byler!
