FEAST, MY CARNIVOROUS DAUGHTER!!!! FEAST!!!!!!
This is Rosie. She is named for the color of her mouths and also for - well, IYKYK.
My cousin is super into carnivorous plants (like, he goes to shows and has won awards for his plants), and inspired me to get some of my own. I have a sundew and a sarracenia coming in the mail but in the meanwhile I did purchase one (1) venus fly trap death tube from a big box store because I always thought they were very cool as a kid and I'm determined to keep it alive now.
Apparently they're literally only native to specific regions of North/South Carolina, which does make me feel patriotic. Also apparently, they evolved to be carnivorous in part because the water they usually are in naturally is extremely pure and low in nutrients, which is also why you have to water them with distilled/DI/RO water or else they fucking die. Also, if you feed them a bug (or high quality crushed betta pellets, which are mostly black soldier fly larvae anyway), you have to gently massage the trap a little bit after it closes to trick it into staying closed as a living bug inside would, or else it will open back up within a few hours or days!
Anyway, I murdered a house fly and a couple of mosquitos and fed them to my new child. Try to eat me? Get eaten, bitch. Circle of life.
#personal#plantblogging#venus fly trap#carnivorous plants#dear diary#they're also super sun-hungry full sun plants that are perfectly suited to the DEATH WEATHER of the central valley#(including winter dormancy)#so I'm really excited to have a full time outside plant#the sarracenia pitcher will be the same#but the sundew will be set on my plant shelf to catch the little gnats that sometimes circle my violets
