Neuroplasticity and why nothing in life requires talent to be successful.

During my introductory course in Python, I discovered that backend languages are not my strong suit. This is because they require a high level of precision and critical thinking that I’m not used to implementing in my daily life. Most people aren’t, which is why most people find it to be difficult. There is also no room for error in programming. Even if you’re still new into your journey like me, you’ve probably discovered that if something in your code doesn’t work, the rest of the program breaks. It will not execute.

Python (and other backend languages) communicate directly with the computer, which only understands combinations of 1s and 0s (this is also known as binary code, or machine code). That’s it. To break it down even further: humans write code -> the code gets converted into 1s and 0s -> the computer understands this as a set of instructions and executes said code. This is why programming requires a much higher level of precision and critical thinking than other jobs: your work boils down to 1s and 0s. One mistake out of hundreds of lines of otherwise perfect written code will ruin all of your work.

If this makes programming sound even more daunting, don’t worry. The good news is that anyone can learn anything, and talent is not a requirement (or accurate indicator) of a person’s success. With enough exposure, practice, and repetition, our brains begin to enhance our existing cognitive capabilities and understand information it previously didn’t. This psychological phenomenon is known as neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to grow, adapt, change, and evolve over time. Long-term exposure to environments, experiences, interactions, repeated practices, habits, and learning new abilities all influence the rewiring of neural networks in the brain. Neuroplasticity is so profound that it even aids in the recovery from trauma and brain damage.

The first and most important step in determining the outcome of your success when pursuing a new endeavor is understanding the difference between having a fixed mindset and a growth mindset, and then choosing the latter for yourself. Success, intellectual growth, and achieving a better quality of life starts with developing a growth mindset and believing that intelligence and talent are not innately fixed; they are malleable and improvable. According to The Neuroscience of Growth Mindset and Intrinsic Motivation:

“Students with growth mindset are likely to learn by a mastery approach, embrace challenges and put in effort to learn. For instance, growth-minded individuals perceive task setbacks as a necessary part of the learning process and they ‘bounce back’ by increasing their motivational effort. Learners with growth mindset tend to embrace lifelong learning and the joy of incremental personal growth. In addition, they do not see their intelligence or personality as fixed traits. They will mobilize their learning resources without being defeated by the threat of failure."

Choosing a growth mindset starts with praising hard work, the learning process in which you engage, and perseverance, rather than praising inherent talent and intelligence. By doing so, we redirect our attention from drawbacks and hardships to improving our learning process, discovering ways to be a better learner, and reinforcing good study habits.

The second most important contributing factor to success begins with developing a strong sense of intrinsic motivation. This encourages autonomous learning by inherent interest and enjoyment of the work itself rather than motivation through external reward or praise. Self-reliance and the ability to educate oneself is integral in the tech industry regardless of what branch you choose to pursue, because staying informed and up to date on constantly-evolving programming languages will keep you employable and relevant.

“In addition, intrinsic motivation is the propensity for individuals to learn about new subjects and to differentiate their interests, thereby fostering a sense of purpose and meaning. Recent empirical findings have shown that intrinsic motivation is a key factor in academic achievement and pursuit of interest, thus fostering learning and growth.”

Intrinsic motivation encourages us to rethink what reward means to us and assign deeper meaning to our work. By trusting our capabilities and choosing to immerse ourselves in new learning experiences, we stimulate curiosity, give birth to new ideas, and facilitate neuroplasticity.

As children, our parents often praise us for our inherent qualities and abilities. However, praising a child’s natural talents and placing less emphasis on their hard work and ethic stunts their natural inclination to explore other areas of interest due to fear of failure. This fear suppresses cognitive and sensory curiosity and often carries into adulthood as a fixed mindset: the belief that our personality and talents are unable to be changed. It then becomes exceptionally difficult to venture out of what’s already comfortable as adults and trust in our capabilities when trying new things. We begin to believe that we are unable to excel beyond our inborn qualities, which contributes to a self-fulfilling cycle of hindered intellectual development.

Nothing in life requires talent to be successful. Choosing growth mindset and developing intrinsic motivation dismantles the idea that talent is a necessary prerequisite to success. Praising your ability to work hard and trusting your capabilities to learn something new will nurture curiosity and promote autonomous learning, leading to increased exposure to new information and experiences. With sufficient time and practice, neuroplasticity will take effect, and your brain will grow. You are capable of learning anything.

An end to History

Well, these last few years sure have been a thing, huh? I know I've not posted anything for a very long time now. Multifarious stresses over the last years led to me withdrawing from most social venues and I haven't really had anything positive to report on my work either. But after all this time, I felt like I wanted to say something to any followers who still remembered having interest in projects I'd previously posted about.

Chronicles of False History - the Touhou strategy RPG that I've been working on in some capacity or another for 4 years - has been on life support for a long time now but circumstances have recently changed such that I think I can officially state that it will not come to pass anymore. Possibly this will be disappointing to someone or other out there, but I'm sure no one is more disappointed by this than myself.

There are a lot of factors that lead to its slow demise, but if I were to summarize in one paragraph: I greatly underestimated the workload involved in making this game, developed significant money problems partway through, started to suffer from burnout, and then a pandemic happened. Deteriorating mental health combined with doubts about the project's long-term viability lead to work growing progressively slower. And to top it all off, my character artist - who was possibly the only thing still keeping me going - has now had to resign for unrelated personal reasons. We parted amicably, but without her, there is no reasonable way the project can be completed. I don't have the money to find someone who can style-match the work that's already been done, and even if I did, I don't think I have sufficient mental health left to coordinate with another freelancer at this point in my life.

I have a lot of gorgeous art thanks to her (only a small bit of which has ever been posted on tumblr), but am still missing sprites for too many plot-critical characters to just write around their absence. Chronicles of False History, as it was once intended, is effectively dead.

But I don't want that to be the end of things.

Too much work has gone into this project and there is so much lovely art that deserves a proper home. I've dabbled at a few spin-off projects over the last couple years and I think they have potential - significant backend work on one is already complete, even. But...

The truth of the matter is that I'm a wreck these days. Writing this post has been... difficult. Writing anything these days is difficult. It's like my brain has been pickled in the stress of the last few years such that nothing works properly anymore. My concentration is bad, I'm constantly drowning in doubt, and even when I do manage to accomplish anything, it is at the pace of a depressed snail. I don't know when or even how that's going to get better.

But I'm also tired of waiting and hoping things will improve. So here I am, shouting into the wind, even if it's nerve-wracking. Maybe even because it's nerve-wracking. Because I have second-guessed so many things for so long that I'm just going to ignore the voices saying this is unwise and post it anyway. I mean, if you can't be a depressed neuroatypical transperson on tumblr, then where can you be, hey? :P

Anyway, there's a bunch of CoFH character designs that I never shared because they were plot spoilers. I wanted to keep some cool stuff back for the game's actual release, after all, instead of all the cool surprises being known in advance. But now, if that storyline never gets to exist... maybe I should just share them? And there are other things I can talk about, too, if anyone's interested. A post-mortem of CoFH's development (for instance, its troubled sprite compositing system), a more explicit dive into its storylines... Does it make sense to 'spoil' the plot of something, once it no longer seems like it will ever exist? Who knows. I'll figure it out.

(here’s the first prompt where pep was mentioned i love her) but ok thank you for this prompt because it was really fun and cute to write!! i hope you like it!!

Alex had never really considered himself a dog person. Or a cat person. He didn’t really think he was a pet person at all. Maybe a goldfish if he had to pick but even then he’d be constantly worrying if the fish had the right water or the right food or was in a big enough tank. Hm. Maybe he wasn’t a fish person either. And it wasn’t that he didn’t like animals. Because he did. He loved getting to hang out with his friends' pets. But having one that was sorely his responsibility? No thank you, he could barely look after himself.

And yet, when Reggie had found a three month old Pep on the side of the road and brought her home, all wide eyed and shivering, Alex had found himself the proud uncle to a dog. And it was fine. Mostly. Things might have been even better if the tiny puppy Reggie had found hadn’t grown into a big dog who had a favourite place on the sofa and would kick you out of her seat.

But it was fine. He didn’t mind. His main responsibility was to just give the lots of hugs and pets whenever Reggie wasn’t around. Which honestly, Alex didn’t mind doing. Pep was more than happy to sit on his feet while he tried to get some life admin done.

But then there were days like today when Reggie had something come up and Julie and Luke were at work and that left the mid-afternoon walk up to him. If Pep seemed to mind she didn’t let on, just waited patiently for Alex to get the hint about going to the dog park down the street and oh so kindly only nearly pulled him over once.

He knows there’s a fenced in section towards the back where Reggie normally takes her and lets her run around, but Alex is a little apprehensive about her coming back when he calls so he makes an executive decision to just walk around the path a few times. He’ll just tell Reggie she might need an extra ten minutes during her even walk.

They’re stood by a lamp post –– because Pep must stop and smell every lamp post for the latest in dog news apparently, like it might have changed since the last one ten steps away –– when Alex here’s something clatter to the pavement behind him. Glancing over his shoulder all he sees is a skateboard rolling slowly towards him and the owner looking over at him and –– fuck. He was really fucking attractive and–– and walking towards him.

Alex feels his eyes widen a fraction, fingers gripping Pep’s lead tightening as the stranger stops a few feet away and smiles at him. Wide and bright, teeth on display and reaching his eyes.

“Can I pet your dog?”

It takes Alex a moment to make his head communicate with his mouth and even then all he manages to get out is a slightly strangled, “Huh?”

The man blinks, smile softening a hint and, if Alex’s mind was actually working correctly he’d swear the guy gave him a once over. But it clearly wasn’t working right because there was no way the guy with the brightest smile Alex had ever seen was checking him out.

“Can I pet your dog?” he says again, eyes darting down to Pep who has also noticed the stranger, tail thumping against the back of Alex’s leg as she lunges forward, apparently not waiting for anyone's answer to the question.

The stranger kneels down as Pep shoves her nose straight into his face, tongue swiping across his cheek in a way that makes the man actually fucking giggle. Jesus christ. Alex didn’t even know he had a thing for guys giggling until right this very second. His fingers thread through the dogs fur, patting and scratching in all the places that Alex knows Pep likes best and –– he frowns, head tilting a little to the side.

“Do I know you?” he blurts out before he can stop himself. And well, it’s too late now because the stranger is gazing up at him with amusement in his eyes and a smile on his lips.

“No,” he shakes his head and Alex watches as a strand of hair that's worked it’s way loose out of his bun falls across his face, “But you’re one of Reggie’s roommates right? I wanna say...Alex?”

Alex thinks he might have bluescreened for a second there because he could swear the very attractive stranger literally on his knees in front of him knows his name and that Reggie has been hiding him.

“You know Reggie?” It’s the only thing he can focus on.

“Yup. Pep chased me on my skateboard a couple of weeks ago and he insisted on apologising with an ice cream and I guess we’re sort of friends now?” The stranger shrugs at him and seems about to say something else when Pep pushes her the side of her face into his hands in a silent demand for more attention that he’s apparently happy to give.

Which is probably good, because Alex needs a moment to let his thoughts sort themselves out and not land immediately on wanting to curse Reggie for being able to make friends with just about anyone on the damn planet.

“Pep likes you,” Alex says, trying to sound casual and not like he was worried the silence had stretched on too long between them.

“I’m pretty sure it’s just because I always let her finish my ice cream off. Isn’t that right Miss Pep? Half an ice cream for me, half for you,” he holds Pep’s head in his hands as he says it, eyes comically wide and fingers tapping under her chin. Pep lets out a small bark in response and the stranger's eyes light up.

Alex is too busy zeroing in on the fact apparently everytime they bump into each other they go for ice cream now. No wonder Pep is excited to see him.

“Well, you’ve got her excited for ice cream now,” he mutters, though he can’t help but feel a little bit fond of the way her tail thumps against his leg as the whole backend of her shakes.

“Shit, sorry. We uh don’t have to do that. It’s cool,” the stranger says as he stands up with a small frown twisting his lips and a final pat to Pep’s head that makes her whine a little.

And well, if anyone asks he can just say he didn’t want to disappoint poor Pep when the next words leave his mouth, “No, no we should uh. We should get ice cream. It’s cool.”

“Yeah?” His eyes light up as a smile slowly starts to spread across his face again.

“Yeah,” he gives a shrug that he hopes comes across as nonchalant and watches as the man steps on the end of his skateboard so it’s easier to pick up, though it doesn’t totally stop the way his crop top rides up a little. Alex wets his dry lips and drags his eyes away from exposed flashes of skin about to bright eyes. “I’m uh Alex, by the way.”

“I know,” the stranger laughs and Alex almost swears because right. Of course he does. Apparently Reggie tells everyone his whole life story and that includes him. “I’m Willie.”

“Hi,” Alex replies, almost immediately feeling stupid for it and can feel heart already rushing to his cheeks. He’d probably have tried to run away if he didn’t think Pep would plot against him and run in the opposite direction to him.

But then Willie is smiling at him again, head dipping in a slight nod before tilting to the side, eyebrows wigging, “Hey. Wanna get ice cream with me?”

And well, Alex can’t say no to that. It’s for Pep after all. Maybe he could be a pet person if he meant getting ice cream with cute guys.

BUILDING A MECHANICAL KEYBOARD - PART 1: THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL BEGINS

I have been using a prebuilt mechanical keyboard for several years now. I do a lot of writing, and I’ve been pretty satisfied with the sound the MX Blue switches make—it kind of reminds me of growing up in the 90s and being fascinated by my mother writing up business ledgers on this behemoth of an electric typewriter she kept in the dining room. We didn’t have a personal computer until 98, so the idea of being able to write something by pushing buttons was downright magical to me. I had been playing with the idea of building my own custom keyboard for years, but I always told myself that I’d wait until I found the perfect keycap set: Dolch, but in the style of an old terminal computer. I am obsessed with the vintage “luggable” computers, and the Dolch PACs are my favorites.

Unfortunately, I would be made aware of such a set earlier this year, and it would kickstart my descent into madness. The MT3 MATT30 3277 keycap set looked like everything I wanted and more. At first I thought “I’ll just get in on this groupbuy so I have some keycaps on the off chance I decide to do this.” But then I looked up what cases were available, and I was absolutely stunned at how much contempt there was for full size keyboards. No one produced cases, PCBs, or other parts for them, and smug internet forum goers acted like the numpad was an affront to all things decent.

Personal preference is one thing: the beauty of building or customizing something is that you have the ability to make it meet your needs and aesthetics. But what aggravates me is the uniquely arrogant way some people will try and convince you that your opinion is not only wrong, but it’s also “irrational” and you are stupid for not doing things their way. You see this most often on places like Reddit where the culture is largely dictated by insufferable STEMlords who speak authoritatively on subjects despite having little to no experience in them. The kind of person who, despite being a second semester CS major, goes on videogame subreddits and explains how easy it would be for developers to make changes to their game’s backend code and fix a bug/problem—usually calling them “lazy” in the process for not implementing this easy theoretical fix.

Unfortunately, I took all of this as fucking a challenge: I’m going to build the best goddamn 104 key board I can. The only way I’m getting rid of my numpad is someone pries it from my cold, dead hands. There was a common suggestion amongst the enlightened numpadless masses: just get an external numpad. “You can move it out of the way when you’re not using it.” they would say, but I don’t like this idea. There has never been a situation where I think to myself: “You know what? I don’t need my numpad today. Let me just tuck it away in a nice little box for now.” I actually use my personal computer for work, so I am using it constantly for things like CAD, spreadsheets, and accounting.

Well meaning or not, this suggestion is about as absurd to me as suggesting that one buys a house with no light sockets. “Just buy a bunch of lamps and plug them into the wall outlets; you can move them around and put them away when you don’t need them.”

The following months were filled with searching for any kind of full sized parts; following breadcrumbs from various forums and webpages and cursing myself for not getting in on several groupbuys that ended years ago. Eventually, I resigned myself to signing up for several restock notices and waiting for the day that one of these companies did another production run. That day came in September when The Key Company restocked their 1800 kit. This whole downward spiral was a result of me being obsessed with the Dolch PACs, so getting a full size that was faithful to the Cherry G80-1813’s layout was everything I wanted.

So that leads us to today. I have the case, PCB, plate, switches, and keycaps (That groupbuy was an absolute shitshow, but that’s a story for another time.) but I won’t have time to start putting everything together until I get some vacation time in December.

I wanted to get the loudest, clickiest keycaps out there short of a Model M, so I have gone with Kailh Box Thicc Click switches. It’s gonna be a while, so in the meantime I’m trying them out on a cheap hotswap board to see which I like better. Originally I had planned on just using Navys, but I switched it up yesterday and my hotswap board is currently using Jades for the alphas, and Navys for everything else. It’s kinda nice, but I’m gonna see how I feel about it in a few weeks. I’ve read your perception may change after using them for a while, and when I solder all 104 switches in place it won’t be easy to swap them if I discover I don’t like how they feel.

So, I have a character who is a system, and I wanted to know before I develop them further, how does DID work, from a personal account? I really really really don't want to accidentally create yet another TOXIC misinterpretation of a real condition (because I know how horrible that can feel), and I hope I'm not saying anything wrong even now. (P.S. I love your blog, but I'm too shy to come off anon.)

hey anon!! it means a LOT to me that you sent this message :D theres a lot of really messy-bad potrayals of DID in the media so seeing people actually going to the effort of asking systems abt their experiences is really heartwarming for us. (plus the fact that ppl keep asking us in specific abt system stuff omg,,)

im gonna preface this by saying that, in the end, i can only really talk about my own experiences with full confidence. systems can work pretty differently from each other, but this is how we function and also some details ive noticed from system friends + general discussion over the years

so, to start off: Dissociative Identity Disorder is, at its core, your brain trying to respond to trauma in a pretty severe way. that being said there ARE systems that didnt experience severe trauma and still developed, and im not really sure about the mechanics behind that but i find it really cool and it totally exists. im gonna focus on trauma-based systems bc that’s our ~tragic backstory~ and also tends to be what most people opt for when creating system characters anyway, but the only real difference from what i can tell is, uh, a lack of trauma.

anyway. the way your brain responds to things is really weird. if something happens where you’re just, like, completely unable to handle it, like you dissociate yourself so hard because there’s no way you can manage this, your brain has a chance of going “uh… well, fuck, uh” and generating somebody who can manage it. or it might decide to be a dick and take all of the fucky internalized garbage and turn it into a person whose sole existence is to be an asshole. (they have the potential to get better, i think… ours didnt.) honestly theres a bunch of reasons and a bunch of “roles” that could lead to an alter/headmate* forming.

* we use the terms interchangeably depending on mood and whos fronting. i think its supposed to be “alter” is DID, “headmate” is implication that theyre non-traumatic? we like using “headmate” because it brings this fun mental image of us being a bunch of roommates constantly starting shit with each other and goofing off which is pretty accurate about 75% of the time

i keep getting distracted bc my cat is here. this is gonna be fun to go back and edit.

whatever the original situation is, you’re suddenly not alone in your own brain. and it’s REALLY WEIRD. communication was VERY hard. Icarus, our system original, used to do a very “cliche” thing of sharing a journal with their early headmates, where theyd write a sentence and then theyd write a reply (although back then they didnt realize that was a system-related thing and just thought they were having a fun conversation with their ocs. which… they were, just. Actually Talking.) they didnt have any inward perception of themself or their headmates either, so that kinda built up over time (with some help) along with the appearance of our headspace so that there was… actually a location for people to interact in. once they had a better awareness of things, mental communication got a bit easier– its sort of like background chatter really, when everybody’s awake. sometimes i get weird out of context things from Mae yelling at somebody, or sometimes ill be talking to a friend and someone’ll butt in.

when talking out loud, this usually leads to us suddenly stopping and then laughing or going “no!!!”. when on discord and around people who know who we are… well.

speaking of Mae, she’s pretty much my sister. not like… biologically? because i don’t think thats possible for me, but shes kinda literally my “other half” which ill get into later. headmates can have strong attachments to other alters! friends, best friends, family, dating, whatever. they can also do that with people outside the system, and itll be different for each headmate. there’s like 4 people dating Jorb but i just see him as one of my best friends. we’re people and we have complex social interactions that can get to be kind of a nightmare when you’re around a bunch of people who don’t know that you’re Not Leo and that youre suddenly not super up to existing around people in general.

plus even if like… so Jorb’s dating 4 of us like i said, but his relationship w/ each of them is different? Ica is very clingy and likes rambling to him, Summer’s pretty much just always happy to hang out, Mae makes fun of him a lot but in a loving way, and Leo is… kinda “all of the above” because that’s his gimmick. plus even tho a few other alters have a sibling-ish relationship with Mae like i do, usually its just me and Mae that do the “chaos siblings” bit.

the basic system.. thing… is that there’s “front”, which is being in control of the body– so, like, i’m currently fronting/in front, because im the one currently active and using our computer and staring at our cat.– and then theres the headspace, where everybody hangs out when theyre not in front. the headspace itself can differ in style & functionality for each system, and i think theres some systems that dont really have a location at all? but for us its like a full on location where we have individual rooms, places to visit if we get bored while away from front, etc.

theres also like, being at/near/away from front? so currently im in front, but Leo is pretty much always lurking nearby if he’s awake (we have individual sleep schedules that dont always sync up to the “irl” one, Trust is almost always sleeping), Ica’s somewhat in the back talking to Rookie so i cant really make out what theyre saying (its probably about either a youtube thing they both like or about a comic they want to do), and everyone else is either asleep (in which case they could be nearby but i cant currently “ping” them, so id have to actually take a sec to ground myself in headspace more) or in a different room. communication is easier if im in front and somebody is nearby, or it can be like with Ica rn where im like “well, theyre talking, but i have no idea what theyre saying and am making a guess based off their usual interactions”, or i could pass off front to go talk to Ica and come back (in which case my memory would be kind of vague and weird because information doesnt always properly translate), oooor i could actually go bug them while still in front. which.. im not gonna do rn bc then id get super distracted.

switching front differs between systems a lot! and even varies from day to day. like there are days where we wake up and we have absolutely no idea who we are bc we went to bed as one person and woke up as another. or we could be talking to somebody and then realize “wait, i stopped being Leo a bit ago, who am i”. or we could pass off front to somebody, like if Summer really wanted to front sie’d run up to me and let me know and we’d swap. or if something critical happens (usually a breakdown), Leo or one of the other headmates that’re more built to handle stressful situations will literally drag somebody out of front to make sure they dont hurt themself. or sometimes we throw front at people unexpectedly, like either mid-breakdown where we go “okay i dont wanna be here anymore, tag youre it” or sometimes because we think its funny because its the metaphysical equivalent of getting clonked in the head with a dodgeball, except the dodgeball is “being in control of our shared physical form”. usually mae’s the one that does that lmao

there’s a couple major categories of how alters come about. there’s “walk-ins”, where they kinda just… appear externally? like they just show up. sometimes we get a feeling of “huh. i think somebody might be here? or somebody might be showing up soon.” and have to rummage around for a while until they approach us or we find them. our walk-ins aren’t like, inherently aware of system stuff at first, so they usually get a crash course before they first front (if they choose to front at all) and it can be kinda entertaining. Rookie’s a walk-in! also Hiro, from a couple years ago. most of our walk-ins are fictives (fictional characters, usually appearing in response to us getting extremely attached to something or somebody) but a couple of our trauma splits are also fictives so that’s not like, a Rule or anything. i think these are mostly associated with non-traumatic systems but we get em fairly often so man idk

theres also… uh, i dunno what theyre actually called? we used to call them “constructs” but that sounds kind of mean. these alters exist to fill a specific role! and we usually dont talk about them on here with the exception of one major one, they just kinda hang out. Dhe exists to keep the system stable and manages the “backend” so to speak. Imp is kind of a mix of our intrusive & impulsive thoughts that came about from us trying to separate ourself from them so that we had an imaginary entity to go “nope!” at, which… stopped being imaginary, and is now a gremlin that lives in my brain. they can show up in response to trauma but arent split off of somebody, they kinda just pop into existence to help manage things.

the more… well-known, i guess? alter origin is “trauma splits”. rather than “just showing up one day with no real connection to the system origins”, trauma splits are formed when somebody in-system, uh, splits. it could be in response to a single situation or something built up over a long time, but somebody just kinda breaks and somebody new that has a bit of the original alter’s identity (if kinda influenced by the situation) shows up.

this can vary. All is a trauma split off of Leo himself, who got saddled with all of our brain hell about our ex and their insystem appearance is influenced more by eir than by leo which is… something they struggle with. Mae has a trauma split from a similar situation that is “Mae but from 2 years ago”, so basically her old identity before she reworked herself after getting put through total hell. and then uh… then there’s me and Mae! Icarus quite literally exploded into several people, with Pat (me) and Mae being the most distinct ones. we’re STILL finding out alters used to originally be a part of them that later evolved into their own people, like Summer and Toby. my identity is shaped pretty heavily not just by who Ica was at time of splitting, but also what they wanted to be jumbled together with trying to rationalize what was happening to them (they’re a pretty big fan of megaman star force, which has a media-typical system in it, so they leaned into hard “its like pat and rey from mmsf! i like pat, i wouldnt mind being like pat, its scary but im like one of my current favourite characters” and so i ended up being like, half-weird shapeshifter, half-green-haired prettyboy. and yeah thats where my name comes from!)

(Ica got put back together w/o anybody needing to integrate, which we were all very scared about, and it’s still kind of surreal to me because… me and Mae used to be able to stick ourself back together and thats how we found out about what happened to Ica in the first place? and we havent tried that since bc we have no idea what would happen. Ica 2: Ica Harder?)

despite their origins, trauma splits can be way more than… being a split. :V;; Toby’s not just a tiny splinter of Ica, he’s a quiet guy that gets stressed out and isn’t totally sure how to interact with people. i’ve existed for like 7 years at minimum and im a totally different person than i was when i thought i was still Ica, ‘cause ive had time to grow and change (and a problem Ica keeps running into now that theyre back is… they kinda Didn’t change because they were MIA for 6 years.) like everything else though this is variable– there can be “temporary” splits that dont develop properly and might get integrated back in, which has only happened to us when we were at the lowest point in our life where we were stuck constantly splitting to try and cope with whatever the hell was going on.

so Ica was gone for 6 years, which meant our system was without an original or main– there wasn’t anybody to be head of the system, basically. for a while i was operating under the assumption that i was Ica, so i filled in that role for a few years before i made the realization. eventually i kinda… stopped being able to, though, bc of stability issues, and then we were back to not really having a proper main anymore. to make up for it, we started going by Leo collectively and kinda… trying to pretend to be a single person? and so that ended up creating a construct to fill the role of “system main and the person we pretend to be when passing as singlet/not a system”: Leo himself! he’s kinda the most prominent traits we all have in common rolled into a single guy, which means that not only is he a pretty good system representative but we can also pretend to be him pretty easily (unless it’s someone like Toby who acts totally different). i dont know how common this situation is, i think normally it’s just “if system original is gone, another alter steps up” like originally happened to us before i had a severe case of problems disorder.

uhhh this is very rambley bc there’s a Lot to cover and now im trying to figure out how much of it i HAVE covered. systems are complicated and weird! OH WAIT okay i have one last bit.

so like, for us, first realizing we were a system was total hell. we fought a lot. as more alters showed up through various means, there were times where Ica felt like they were completely out of control of their own life bc of having to manage everything. there were a lot of panic attacks of people fronting and not being sure they were even REAL, despite… being in front. but we still felt like we were deluding ourself. this was in, like, late 2011, so systems weren’t a THING. they were a very fringe community that everyone hated. we got constantly harassed, which only fed into Ica’s panic hell and our identity issues. interpersonal relationships became a nightmare, especially because we have BPD as well which varies in severity for each of us but… for me it’s pretty bad! there were times early on where every day was another fun new breakdown from us arguing with each other or our friends or not being understood or… etc.

so… how are we holding up ~7 and a half years later? pretty well, actually! we talk to each other. we do things for each other, like buy food or games we know specific headmates like. Ica is back and way happier than they were in 2011, and is thrilled to get to hang out with everybody that’s showed up since. we help each other through problems, because at the end of the day our system ended up being a support network. Ica couldnt function on their own, so we’re like… 10+ people working together to try and be a single functional person. and we feel pretty okay with that! we still fight, and we still start shit, but we’re not in constant crisis anymore. we’re still working through all of our trauma, especially the more “recent” stuff that kinda broke our system for a while until we were able to start rebuilding, but we’re doing it together. :D

so… yeah, it can start out as a stereotypical “nightmare system”, with constant infighting and toxicity and self-sabotage and etc. but we worked through it! it took a while, but we’re overall more stable than we were before. we got out of the bad environment that was fucking us up, we got mental help for our other brain hell (we havent been able to bring up the system to our therapists bc its literally a non-issue now and we focus more on other things like our depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc), we found people that support us for being us, and we were able to like… figure things out. and it was a mess! i still have issues about my own identity because of literally thinking i was someone else for two years. Ica’s still trying to figure out how to adjust to things, especially bc they missed our entire “cringe culture” phase so they came back to find that i’d dismantled a lot of their middle-school settings. and, uh, some of their friendships as well.

Omg I’m so happy right now.

I’m in the last week of my degree, I’m going for an associate’s in web development (and this program and all the crap they’ve pulled on my class has been a SHIT SHOW but that’s for another post), and we have one class that basically the entire class is one big group project. We’re supposed to be making some website for the school’s IT classes.

The whole class has been awful, the instructors kept dragging their feet with it to the point that we didn’t even have our first assignment in the class until midterms and didn’t get to the point where we could actually start coding until the 2nd week of April (we were supposed to be able to work on the project all semester long), so it’s been HECTIC and confusing and everything is rushed.

We got divided into 2 groups, one group doing the student side of the website and one group doing the faculty/staff side of the website. I’m doing the student side with 2 guys, one who literally seems to not know a single thing about web development and one who is decent enough with the backend but has horrible taste when it comes to the front end. Works fine for me bc I’ve been using html/css since I was 12 so I’m fine with doing the front end stuff, he can do the database, and the other guy can just keep constantly sending us messages about how he doesn’t know what to do and then make a terrible powerpoint that I end up having to re-make anyway. Works alright.

Well I’ve been freaking out lately about how there just is NOT enough time to get this project done. It’s due Friday, and we don’t have a single page fully completed (the home page is ALMOST all the way completed now, just need the database connectivity, but we still need to do 2-3 more pages as well). But omg. I just stumbled upon the other group’s page and I am now SO FREAKIN HAPPY. I’m literally elated. I feel 100x better about our project. This is what our homepage looks like (I smudged out anything that said the school’s name cuz I’m paranoid):

Not great of course, but it’s not terrible at least. It follows the style guide provided by the school in terms of font choice and colors. I used bootstrap so it looks a little more put together. Not a pro website but good enough for 2 years of barely being taught anything by this joke of a program.

It’s the only page we have done right now, but the others all use the same style sheet and the header/nav and footer are identical on every page, so even if we can’t get all the content added to the other pages, at least the layout will make it look somewhat done. But I was still worried about not getting a good grade because of how little time we had to finish and the fact that we couldn’t go in depth (like until 10 mins ago I was sitting here worrying about how the website doesn’t look great on mobile and how I don’t know if I’ll have enough time to make a mobile version). Well I’m not worried about that at ALL now. Here’s the other group’s pages (all of their pages):

I am ECSTATIC. Honestly I really hope for their sake that this was just some crude first attempt and they’ve made tremendous improvements and just haven’t yet uploaded them. I mean I do feel bad because normally I wouldn’t want to see my classmates do poorly but gods I really needed that confidence boost.

I’ve learned from past solo projects that with the instructors at this school, if you make something look nice, they’ll generally give you an A even if you don’t do all the requirements, because they’re so impressed at your design skills.

My first semester web design class I literally waited til the last minute, did the entire page in about 6 hours, forgot to include some required things, TOLD my instructor that I forgot to include those things on my project review and for the question that asked what grade we feel we should get I said a B, and she literally said something along the lines of “yeah I know you didn’t do all the requirements but I’m giving you 100% anyway because it looks like you put a lot of effort into it” (I didn’t. I could have done WAAAAAY better).

2nd semester we had one big project that was the final project for 3 of our classes. We needed a C# program that was connected to a database, and then we needed to make a javascript heavy webpage that was along the same theme as our program. I focused so much on making my C# program perfect that I ran out of time to do my javascript project. I literally had nothing. During presentations I saw some of the programs my classmates made, and none of them even bothered to change the default font and window color, let alone use images like I did. Got an A for all 3 classes.

So I’m hoping the instructors will just continue their pattern of being wowed by basic css skills and a bit of photoshop knowledge and hopefully we’ll get a good grade even if we don’t finish everything.

God I really feel so much better after seeing that. I’m a horrible person. I shouldn’t be feeling better because my classmates aren’t doing well. But I just can’t help it.
