Log Transcription Begins:

View: Exterior Of Former O5-12 "Adam" retirement lodging, located [███████,██], at 11:██pm, View switches to the lodgings exterior barn. Where Former O5-12 is seen teaching a young man to work on cleaning the barn. The cameras detect anomalous interference, easily traceable and is quickly cleaned up, after 50 to 60 seconds of footage, the shot slowly starts to distort with static, however the view of former O5-12 "Adam" and the young man remain in focus as The former Overseer seems to be reprimanding the young man. The last frame visibly uncorrupted is the Former Overseer swinging his cane at the young man before the footage is ruined with static.

Several motion sensors picked up activity in the woods surrounding the house leading west. After approximately two hours a anomalous fluctuation is detected some miles away from the property, The young man in question was Alexander Quinn Silendit, a known Member of the Bright Family. Rumours State that Former O5-12 "Adam" took in Alexander as a means to reconnect with his Fatherly side. There were rumours that things were not as the former Overseer stated, but these rumours were never investigated until after the former Overseers unexpected demise. Alexander Silendit has been classed as a Possible Keter and id on the loose with unknown anomalous capabilities. If any reports involving static come through, please alert your site director and a mtf squad will be sent to investigate. Repeat, Alex Silendit is Loose and has Unknown Capabilities, if spotted in plain clothes do not engage. Report immediately and Back up will be on its way. Trackers were implanted, however any and all attempts to establish a signal lead straight to the point where the source of the anomalous field emenated from. Location: Unknown.

Preach! Oda never understood Dazai, he was just the only one who underestimated him and saw a lonely lost teenager. He is completely unable to see the bigger picture as Dazai points out before the other runs in his demise. This simplicity and naïvety made Dazai like him (as pointed out in dead apple) but also as portrayed in Beast makes it very obvious that Oda never saw Dazai, because he is the same lost person as Dark Era Dazai but Oda can't blame it on an adult behind him, so he blames Dazai

Like I don't get the obsession of him being good for Dazai, and the only one who understand him, if he were Beast Dazai would have been alive because Oda would have seen that he was just the same as Dark Era Dazai. But he doesn't because Oda has never been able to see behind the act to see the motivation, he only sees the masks. Chuuya on the contrary sees the desired outcome Dazai has in mind and deciphers the act. Hence, Chuuya can not exist in Beast other than being vaguely mentioned.

ok disclaimer i have not read beast but from where im at in reading dark era, my sense is that oda in general does not understand how to look past the surface, and even when things begin to hint at being more complicated, he actively avoids making it deep, even to the point of willfully denying reasonable conclusions. he doesn’t seem to have fully conceptualized what the mafia does, he very doggedly refuses to accept ango being a traitor pretty much until he is directly personally betrayed.

on one hand right thats very obviously appealing to dazai bc everyone else in his life is playing 4d chess with their own secret rules, and i get that too its like the idea of just relaxing and saying what you mean and are thinking sounds so blissful and indulgent. on the other hand, oda’s ability tells us he DOES have that sixth sense for things happening under the surface, he just refuses to acknowledge it unless it directly threatens his own life. 

his whole deal is that he refuses to kill, because it would mean he can’t write a novel, right? so on some level he recognizes the inherent gravity of taking a life. and yet still when dazai starts talking its like all of that goes out the window. he’s so focused on the fact that he’s a grunt and dazai is an executive and how that must define the way they interact (even when he is explicitly given permission to throw that mentality out), he cant even properly conceive of what talking to him as a peer would be like. which is stupid. they’re fucking friends. he should be able to tell that despite the difference in organizational rank, dazai would happily listen to what he says. 

there’s a line where oda is like ‘if it werent for the difference in rank i would’ve punched him’ YOU SHOULD HAVE. LITERALLY YOU SHOULD HAVE. it honestly feels like cowardice, plain and simple, that he cant speak up about it. i mean this is all the POINT of oda’s character, its why his dying words are so unsatisfying and hopeless, its why he had to die, to reinforce that the way he was living was always flawed. it doesnt make his death any less tragic, especially considering there were parts of the way he lived that dazai was able to carry forward, but im gonna plant myself firmly in the oda critical camp here.

i wont get too into the brunt of everything because im gonna be here all night as it is but while, yes, the crisis was indeed averted and the empire restored by diocletian in the early 284, the crisis of the third century marked a huge shift in the history of the empire as a whole (from augustus to severus alexander was 26 names and 262 years, from maximinus to diocletian was 23 names and 49 years) and is actually the turning point from classical antiquity to late antiquity, which i mean is telling in and of itself but frankly its only due to diocletians reforms that rome managed to survive the next 150 years as it did but im getting ahead of myself

diocletian was, by all accounts, a good ruler: he came up from nothing, the son of a peasant farmer who rose up through the legion ranks before being declared emperor after the deaths of carus and numerian he only reigned a single year as the sole emperor - he appointed his friend and fellow soldier maximian as augustus of the west, and from there he delegated further, appointing junior co-emperors called caesars (romans had a thing for titles based on previous rulers - part of the imperial cult, in a sense) to create a tetrarchy, a rule of four which actually worked out for him? with maximian and constantius dealing with germanic tribes in a scorched earth campaign along the rhine and galerius fighting the sassanids to the south, diocletian was able to secure the border (didnt even have to build a wall, fancy that) and focus on much-needed imperial reform, though perhaps his greatest achievement is that he was the first in the history of the empire to abdicate and retire peacefully and voluntarily, living out the rest of his days in the small town of spalatum (now split in croatia)

without diocletian, things, as they tend to, go to shityet another roman civil war burns itself out for the next 8 years or so before we get constantine the great, who takes a bunch of diocletians work and either rolls with it or upends it based on whether or not it suited him at the time, and its with constantine where the empire really starts hemorrhaging

from constantine it was a slow march towards the grave for rome - the crossing of the rhine, a constant plague of invasions and failed wars that slowly chip away at her lands and resources and put considerable strain on her already absolute shite economy (turns out an economy dominated by slavelabor and conquest isnt feasible when you lose all your wars and your empire is splintering before your eyes)

the last “true” emperor of what i, anyway, consider rome - and even that is up for debate - is romulus augustulusonly 14, and his claim disputed everywhere beyond italy, but it seems fitting, to me: named for romes founder, called ‘little augustus’ after her first emperorhe is deposed - but not killed, exiled to a seaside castle where he disappears from historical record - by odoacer, who becomes the first king of italy, as there was no more empire to rule, and with the death of the office of emperor so dies the state of the empire
