Canonization and Fandom Purity Culture

I wrote a 1k-word twitter thread (as proof that I am Not made for Twitter and it’s goddamn 240-character limit) and am pasting it here with edits and updates (it’s now 2k words). 

I have thoughts to share (which I know have been stated more eloquently before by others) about this trend of demanding/obsessing that certain ships become "canon" and how it overlaps with the rise of fandom purity culture.

Under the cut.

Here in 2021 there is a seemingly large and certainly loud and active contingent of online fandoms who desire (or even demand) "canon validation" for a given interpretation of a source material. This is more true with shipping than anywhere else.

First, it is important to note that the trend is not limited to queer ships or to any single fandom. In the past few years I've seen it for Riverdale, Voltron, Supernatural (perhaps most extreme?), The 100, etc., and less recent with the MCU, Sherlock, Teen Wolf, Hawaii 5-0, etc. It is a broad trend across ships, fandoms, and mediums.

So if it is more common for queer ships, it is hardly unique to them. Similarly, pretending that it is about queer representation is a clever misdirect to disguise the fact that it is most often about ships and shipping wars. If you ever need proof of that, consider that a character can be queer without being in a given relationship or reciprocating another character's affections. Thus a call for more/better queer rep itself is very different than a call for specific ships to be made canon.

Also note that when audiences frame it as wanting to recognize a specific *character* as queer, it is almost always in the context of a ship. Litmus test: would making that character queer but having them *explicitly reject* the other half of the ship be seen as a betrayal?

(Note: none or this is to say we shouldn't push for more queer rep and more *quality and well-written* queer rep! Just that that isn't what I'm talking about here, and not what seeking canon validation for a specific interpretation or a specific ship is almost ever about.)

Why does this matter?

the language of representation and social justice should not be co-opted to prop up ship wars

it is reciprocal with a trend toward increasing toxicity in transformative fandom spaces

Number 1 here is self-explanatory (I hope). Let's chat about 2.

Demands for canon validation correlate with a rise in fanpol / fandom purity culture. What is fandom purity culture (and fandom policing)? This toxic mentality is about justifying one's shipping preferences and aiming to be pure (non-problematic) in your fictional appetites regarding romance and sex.

Note that this purity culture is so named as it arises linearly from American Protestantism, conservative puritanical anxiety around thought crimes, and overlaps in many ways with terf ideologies and regressively anti-kink paradigms.

It goes like this: problematic content is "gross" and therefore morally reprehensible. Much like how queer sex/relationships get labelled as "gross" (Other) and thus morally sinful, or how kink gets labelled as "harmful" and thus morally wrong. The Problematic label is applied by fanpol to ships with offset age or power dynamics, complicated histories, and anything they choose to label as "harmful". As such, they would decry my comparison here to queerphobia itself as also being harmful, because their (completely fictional) targets are ~actually~ evil.

(The irony of this is completely lost on them).

This mode of interacting with creative works leaves no room to explore dark or erotic themes or dynamics which may exist in fiction but not healthily in reality. Gothic romance is verboten. Even breathe the word incest and you will be labelled a monster (nevermind Greek tragedy or GoT).

As with most puritanical bullshit, fanpol ideology only applies these beliefs to sex and never to violence/murder/etc, proving what lies at its core. It also demands its American-based values be applied to all fictional periods and places as the One True Moral Standard. It evangelizes – look no further than how these people try to recruit others to their cause, aim to elevate themselves as righteous, and try to persuade (‘save’) others from their degenerate ways of thinking. 

“See the light” they promise “here are our callouts and blog posts to convince you. Decry your past sins of problematic shipping, be baptized by our in-group adulation and welcome, and then go forth and send hate to others until they too see the light.” In many ways “get therapy” by the antis is akin to “I’ll pray for you” by the Christian-right (and ultimately ironic).

(Although it has been pointed out to me that these fans are likely not themselves specifically ex-evangelicals, but rather those who have brushed up with evangelical norms and modes of thinking without specifically being victims of it. In many ways they are more simply conservative Christian in temperament and attitude without necessarily being raised into religion by belief).

What this has to do with canon validation is that these fans look to canon for approval, for Truth. On the one hand, if it is in the canon then it must be good / pure or at least acceptable. The authority (canon) has deemed it thus. It is safe and acceptable to discuss and to enjoy watching or consuming. In this way, validation from canon means a measure of safety from being Bad and Problematic. 

For example, where a GoT fan could discuss Cersei/Jaime's (toxic, interesting) dynamic in depth as it related to the canon, fans who shipped Jon/Sansa (healthy, interesting) were Gross and Bad. The canon as Truth provided a safety net, a launch point. "It's GRRM, not me, who is problematic." It wasn’t okay to ship the problematic bad gross incest ship, but it being in the canon material meant it was open for discussion, for nuance, for “this adds an interesting layer to the story” which is denied to all non-canon ships labelled as problematic.

(Note: there are of course people who have zero interest in watching GoT for a whole slew of very valid reasons, including but not limited to the incest. That’s a different to this trend. A less charged example might be The Umbrella Academy, where a brother canonically is in love with his sister and antis still praise the show, but if you dare to ship any of the potential incest ships then you are the one who is disgusting).

On the other hand, a very interesting alternate (or additional) explanation for this phenomenon was raised to me on twitter. (These ideas aren’t mine originally, but I wholly endorse them as a big part of what is likely going on): Namely, as with authoritarian individuals in general, they see themselves as right and correct, but the canon (which has not yet validated their ship) is not correct, and is in fact problematic, and so they can save the canon from itself.

As mentioned, these fanpol types see their interpretation as Good and Pure. So if they can push (demand, bully) the canon into conforming to their worldview and validating their interpretation, then they have shown the (sinful) creators the light and led them to the righteous path. This only works if the canon allows itself to saved though, otherwise the creators remain Evil for spurning them.

How is this different from fans simply hoping for their ship to be canon?

For a second here, let’s rewind to the 90s (since Whedon has been in the news recently). This “I want it to be canon” thing isn’t 100% new, of course. We saw this trend then for the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but it was different then. At the time, fans who hoped for a ship to be canon might have been cheering for a problematic one to begin with (Buffy/Spike). So shipping was still present, minus vocal fanpol.

(And Buffy fans learned that canon validation...can leave a lot to be desired. A heavy lesson was learned about the ways that fan desires can play out horrifically in canon, and how some things are best left out of the hands of canon-writers).

These days, this is still largely true. Many fans hope for their ships to go canon, as they always have. There are tropes like “will they/won’t they” that TV shows may even be designed around, which a certain narrative anticipation and a very deliberate build up to that.

But while shipping *hopes* occur for many fans, almost all ships fans that *demand* to go canon and obsess over are now the ones deemed as Unproblematic, or as Less Problematic. I’m talking here about the ships that aren’t necessarily an explicit will/won’t they dynamic but do have some canon dynamic that leads them to being shipped, but which the creators aren’t necessarily deliberately teasing and building up a romantic end-game for.

These ships often have fans who are happy to stick to fandom, but there has also been a huge uptick in the portion of fans who are approaching shipping with an explicit lens of “will they go canon?” and “don’t you want them to be canon?” and now even “they have to go canon” and “the canon is wrong if they don’t make this ship canon”, to a final end-point of “if the ship doesn’t go canon, the source material is Wrong and Bad.”

These latter opinions are the one we see more by extreme fans (‘stans’), hardcore shippers, but especially by fanpol-types, the ones who embrace fandom purity culture at least to some extent.

Why them?

In pushing for canon validation, fanpol types seek to elevate their (pure) interpretation of canon. As mentioned above, it’s validation of their authority, a safety-net, and a way to save the canon from itself if only they can bully the canon into validating their right and good interpretation. 

There’s also another reason, which is that canon validation is a tool to bludgeon those seen as problematic. They can use it to denounce other (problematic) ships as Not Being Canon and therefore highlight their own as Right and Good, because it is represented in the True Meaning of the Work.

Canon validation then is a cudgel sought by virtuous crusaders to wield against their unclean enemies. It is an ideological pursuit. It is organised around identity and in groups sometimes as insular as cults.

How does this happen?

Fanpol tend to be younger or more vulnerable fans, susceptible to authoritarian manipulators. As many have highlighted before, authoritarian groups and exclusionary ideologies like terfs are very good at using websites like tumblr to mobilize others around their organizing beliefs. Fanpol tend to feel legitimate discomfort, but instead of taking responsibility for their media engagement, ringleaders stoke and help them direct their discomfort as anger onto others; “I feel ashamed and uncomfortable, and therefore you should be held accountable for my emotions.” Authoritarian communities endorse social dominance orientations, deference to ringleaders, and obedient faith to the principles those ringleaders endorse.

As these fans attach more and more of their identity to a given media (or ship), and derive more and more validation and more of their belongingness needs from this fanpol community, they also become more and more anxious about being excluding from this group. This is because such communities have rigid rules and very conditional bases for social acceptance. Question or "betray" the organizing ideology and be punished or excommunicated. If that is all you have, you are left with nothing. Being labelled problematic then is a social death.

What this means is that these fans cannot accept all interpretations of a media as equally valid: to do so Betrays the ideology. It promises exclusion. And, in line with a perspective around ‘saving’ canon and leading others into the light – forcing and bending the canon to their will is what will make it Good (and therefore acceptable to enjoy, and therefore proof of them as righteous by having saved others). As was also pointed out to me on twitter, endorsement from canon or its creators also satiates that deep need they have for authority figures to approve of them.

Due to all of this, these fans come to obsess over canon validation of their own interpretation. In a way, they have no other option but to do so. They need this validation -- as their weapon, as their authority, as their safety net, as their approval, as their evangelical mission of saviorship.

Canon validation is proof: I am Good. I am Right(eous). I am Safe.

(In many ways, I do ache for some of these people, so wrapped up in toxic communities and mindsets and so afraid to step out of line for fear of swift retribution, policing their own thoughts and art against the encroaching possibility that anything be less than pure. It’s not healthy, it’s never going to be healthy.)

In the end, people are going to write their own stories. You are well within your rights to critique those stories, to hate them, to interpret them how you will, but you can never control their story (it's theirs).

Some final notes:

This trend may be partially to do with queer ships now being *able* to go canon where before so no such expectation would exist. Similarly, social media has made this easier to vocalize. Still, who makes these demands and the underlying reasons are telling. There are also many legitimate critiques of censorship, queerbaiting (nebulous discussions to be had here), and homophobia in media to be had, and which may front specific ships in their critique. But critique is distinct from asking that canon validate one's own interpretation.

1. It really bothers me people use LGBT people to deflect criticism. No spoilers, but The Last of Us 2 has story issues. A lot of confusing writing decisions and overall lackluster compared to the first. It's a disappointment for me. A group of people don't like the game because it has lesbians and trans characters. Those people are shitty. Problem is people group all critics of the game as those bigots when there is legit criticism from people who aren't those bigots.

Ngl, finding that balance is really hard. Like:

Me: I am a bi woman?? Which is why I’d like some representation that’s not all doom and gloom. I get that it’s a preference but it’s still a valid one. Not all of us want “problematic” rep but rather something more loving and stable. Like Blake and Yang. I think they could be really good moving forward

Others: They absolutely could not. Here’s an extensive list of every way that their romance has been “forced” on the viewers. They single-handedly ruined RWBY

Me: Okay Number One, there isn’t actually a canonical relationship yet so I don’t think we should be discussing their situation like there is--

Others: OH so you’re one of those aphobic critics who just ignore all the buildup and coding we’ve gotten. It’s not a “real” relationship unless you kiss, huh? 

Me: No! I’m saying that RWBY hasn’t given us anything irrefutable, something to get the bigots off our backs. I 100% believe that the coding reads as romantic but if we never go past coding that’s going to turn into queer baiting, something we’ve been criticizing for years. This need for canonization doesn’t exclude the potential for any sexuality, including making one or both of them ace, but RT needs to have them come out in some way in order to solidify that rep. The “Dumbledore was always gay” argument isn’t enough for 2020.

Others: Do you have any idea how rare it is to have a lesbian or bi relationship in media?? Of course they need to kiss. You claiming they don’t just proves how out of touch you are.

Me: ...okay, can we just agree that it’s impossible for one ship to please everyone and this is why we need LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of representation so that two characters aren’t trying to shoulder the weight of everyone’s identity? We’re moving on. Number Two, Blake/Yang has been no more “forced” than thousands of straight ships out there. If we can accept a guy and a girl being madly in love after looking at each other once, why does a queer couple need a dissertation’s worth of evidence to “prove” that love? 

Also Me, a Volume Later: Hey, I love Blake/Yang but they’re caught up in this whole “protagonists can do no wrong” theme which means that not only are they written as really co-dependent but that co-dependence has led them to making reckless choices without consulting others. Can we maybe let them talk to the other team members? Learn from their mistakes? The relationship - when we hopefully get it - will read as much more healthy and compelling if we let them grow as characters. Here I’m criticizing the depiction of a (potentially) queer relationship, not arguing over whether that relationship has a right to exist at all. Sure, queer characters have the right to be written “badly” just like their straight counterparts, but considering RWBY as its own, autonomous story, don’t we want the writing to be the best it can be? I don’t need to be a world renowned pastry chef to “justify” making a cake. The cake is allowed to be shitty. But wouldn’t I want to try and improve my baking skills if given the chance? Surely we can give queer characters the same pass straight couples get while also pointing out ways to improve their depiction? 

Others: Ah ha! You do hate them! 

Sadly it’s a lose-lose, anon. If you support queer ships you get backlash. If you criticize the writing of queer ships you get backlash. I’ve gotten angry messages about it all. All you can really do is listen when you feel it’s warranted, stick to your beliefs when it’s not, and block/delete at your discretion :/

everyone is absolutely entitled to their sexuality/gender headcanons when nothing has been otherwise established, but acting as if your headcanon is the universally accepted fanon simply bc it may be the most popular or bc it’s That Solidified in your mind, does not mean you should shoot down others headcanons!

It’s ok to disagree! It’s ok to say, in proper context, “that’s cool. I see them as X instead tho!” But it’s not cool to unironically say “you’re wrong and here’s why” and to generally be an ass about others sharing their headcanons with you.

Especially given what the default would be otherwise. I mean honestly. We’re all in the same boat of wanting more Queer rep. Spread the love a little sheesh.

Its just so tiring going into a tag and seeing some people post with such a sense of entitlement. And it’s something I’ve been trying to watch for myself as well. Because, sure, I have my own headcanons that I prefer for some Characters over others. But that doesn’t make someone choosing to label a character pan instead of bi or genderfluid instead of nb, for example, any less valid.

Like, unless they’re already canonically some shade of queer and it’s been explicitly stated as such in the canon, then let people choose whatever damn label they want to slap onto a character. The hope ofc will be that they’re thinking critically about WHY they’re choosing one label over another. But honestly? It’s fandom. Not everyone’s gonna be 100% On when they’re deciding headcanons and yknow? Sometimes that’s okay.

Bc at the end of the day, it’s fun, it provides an escape, and hey. Now there’s One More Fav Character That’s A Little More Like Me in the world. And sometimes that really just what we needed.

hello!! your opinion is absolutely valid and completely understandable in terms of concerns, but i wanted to clear up some misconceptions from the post for you :)

first off, the comics are very different from the show. having seen several snippets of the comics (though not actually reading one), the show does a much better job at handling DID and its rep.

i can’t speak for some of the fans, because there are always assholes who have no idea what they’re talking about, refuse to do research, and completely miss blatantly stated information both in the show and in informative sources. pretending like these people don’t exist would be naive of me, but i do tend to intentionally avoid them.

when steven (the first alter we meet) discovers he’s an alter, he says to marc, “you made me up.” he thinks this because he only recently finds out he’s an alter and is still trapped in the unhealthy mindset of believing in “originals.” this is never directly refuted, but their healthier relationship towards the end of the show implies a better understanding long-term (steven is a fictive/factive protector made from the safety of a childhood movie, a family member, and a partner’s influence). also, since marc doesn’t even know about jake, it sort of implicitly refutes the intentional creation myth. this part did irk me slightly still, though, so i understand the hesitation.

as for terminology, they don’t use any technical terms because marc actively avoided this aspect of his life and steven only just discovers he’s part of a system when the show starts. as for the psychologist, there’s a whole trippy scene through their headspace, and because they’re struggling with thinking they’re nuts, they imagine a psych ward and a doctor (who, of course, only knows as much as they know). the end of the show portrays them refusing to accept this negative connotation as reality, catching the “doctor” in his lie and leaving the mental ward behind (assuredly remolding their headspace?). any negative language used is refuted either immediately or in the long-term.

the show does a fantastic job of treating the alters as separate people. to my memory, nobody (not even the main villain, who intentionally uses shitty manipulative language which steven immediately shoots down every time it comes up) calls them “personalities.” there’s little to no confusion whatsoever about them being the “same person,” and the main love interest even falls in love with steven separately from marc (polyships ftw babey).

okay the next point gets me HEATED so i apologize if my professionalism gets away from me. jake is NOT a persecutor and everyone who has been treating him as such is making me absolutely fucking feral. his only 100% confirmed appearances are 1.) saving them from almost dying (in which he spares a teenager bc even at the risk of the system he’s not going to hurt a child), 2.) saving their asses AGAIN when harrow is ripping their souls out of their body, and 3.) to shoot a piece of shit cult leader possessed by a genocidal cult god in the face (while being partially manipulated unfortunately) bc both of them absolutely deserve to die after everything they did. the other implied appearances are him setting up a date for steven (or himself? i like to think it’s for steven bc jake set it up at a stake house and while he is a sweetie he’s also a loveably snarky asshole), rattling around in a sarcophagus and still refusing help, and gathering information to help marc without revealing himself. he’s a physical protector and prefers to only pop up when he’s absolutely needed, and while he’s (obviously) got issues to work out, he’s a huge sweetheart who cares for his head mates and has an incredibly passionate sense of justice. everyone who’s been treating him as some sort of evil monster after watching the show is apparently incapable of more than two seconds of critical thinking and i will STAY mad about it.

yeesh the jake bit got away from me, apologies again. but yeah i hope this helps!! i personally think it’s a really good show and while there are moments of dramatization, i think it’s the most accurate rep i’ve ever seen and it does a really good job overall. every show has its shortcomings, but personally, i think they’re few and far between in this one (i absolutely don’t blame you at all for your reservations about it, though. it honestly feels targeted to people who actually understand as the nuances of their relationship require some precursor information, which is probably why so many singlets are so misguided about the show’s actual substance). i highly encouraging checking it out to decide for yourselves!!

(MAJOR trigger warning for episode 5 though if y’all do end up watching it; they delve into trauma and it’s very hard to watch if you’re not ready for it)

If you've seen Moon Knight what is your opinion of it?

I have not seen a full episode and I don't really intend too since it is not an accurate representation of being a system. I am all for showing DiD in a possitive light, moon knight seemingly from my research has done a few things that is only gonna cause people to spread a lot of misinfomation or cause singlets [people who are not systems] to go around fake claiming a bunch of people which is just ableist.

Moon knight at least implies that Marc [is that his name] created one of his alters which is not what happens. The body goes through a trauma and sponantiously splits an alter- we have no choice over what or who we get. We don't get to pick and choose who wanders around in our headspace.

I also do not like how they have chosen to portray a superhero [who I didnt know was jewish until doing this research and getting this ask so thats really super awesome /gen] never once states directly that the host has DiD or dissociative identity disorder. They never use words like "host" or "primary caregiver" even when they are with a phycologist. So this leaves everything up to interprertation and only really leaves the rude comments from the other characters.

Also calling Marc's alters "personalities" is honestly, at least in our perspective, downright ableist. MPD or multiple personality disorder was an old term for DiD when there was not much research behind it- there is a reason why we have moved away from using that term since there has been more research behind this disorder and the fact that alters are not personalites. they are each their own person. Like in our system I, the primary host, am not say Meredith. Sure, the two of us share the same body but we are not the same person. That is like saying that you are your parents since you share DNA- stupid and wrong right!

A major show like moon knight using words like "crazy" and "fake personalities" is only going to teach people who do not have an understanding of DiD to think that those terms and words are right to use around systems. We are not crazy, we are not a bunch of fake personaltites made up for some cool party trick. We are traumtised people living with a trauma disorder that takes over and controls most if not all of our lives.

Moon Knight also playing into the common trope of systems having to have Persecutor alter- an alter that hurts the system/the body/ the host. Is once again just feeding into the fucking steryotype that we are all hyper-violent and untrustworthy and dangerous. Something that the community is actively trying to stray away from. People who suffer from DiD are more likely to be the victims of physical abuse or be hurt by other people than the other way around. Damien is a Persecutory Alter in our headspace- He is a father who has never once done so much as raise his voice to his wife, his children or any of us in headspace, in fact he is one of the safest alters we have and one that we trust with the littles.

so all in all, I am not the system to ask since we have not sat down and watched it. But we have sat and read a bunch of articals and seen a few clips and that is just our opinion. Please tell us if we have everything wrong about the show.

And please remember that every system is different. How I have explained how my system works may not be the exact same as someone elses system.

I disagree that every chapter needs to move the story forward. Every chapter needs a purpose but that purpose 100% can be just 'here is a break from the regularly scheduled content'. Filler episodes in shows get a lot of bad rep but the good ones. The good ones give the audience breathing room and create lovely character moments that hang there longer. There are entire subgenres where the status quo is maintained and pacing is literally the passage of time.

Pacing is odd to grasp. Each person has their own pacing preferences and matches for their style. The main this pretty much not kill the momentumn of your work. It can slow down, speed up, pause, but it shouldn't die. Here's a couple of different ways you can pace your chapters:

Tension. This is very common in horror. You'll have the pacing directed by increases and decreases of danger. The details build up and up and up to create an atmosphere and drop and jump back up. It doesn't have to be danger and safety or fear and security. Hurt/comfort commonly builds up the hurt for the pay off of comfort.

Questions. Who? What? Where? Why? How. Every chapter should answer or introduce questions. Think of mysteries where you're given clues that either point to a suspect or remove some. With the overarching question being who did it, how they did it, and/why they did it. And the final answer the end of the mystery. Be careful of the Lost syndrome where you keep creating questions without actually thinking up a way to tie it up.

Rest Points. This one is my personal choice and I think easier done when you have a finished work than posting as you write. When you read a work, there is a natural point where you can to take a break. It's where you would be okay getting up for more tea or to use the restroom. Have your chapter end there. This is different from the point where you stop writing. You can ask someone where they pause when they read your fic if you have a beta. You can also tell based on where you place your scene dividers. It's generally easier to stop between scenes than in the middle of one.

Time. This one is a given but how you decide to convey time impacts pacing. Have a story that starts in the morning and end at night? You have much slower pace than a fic where the chapters start mid-day and end mid-day the following day. The same amount of time is covered but the starting and ending in middles creates a different tone. And even faster is several days within a chapter.

There's without a doubt other methods and plenty of ways to mix the methods. I prefer Rest Points as the chapter end point because I personally hate cliffhangers (I read too many novels that have every chapter end on one). I want every chapter to feel like a good stopping point without excessive pressure to continue.

The importance of pacing varies by genre, what drives your story (plot, character, or worldbuilding), your audience, and the media its created in. Trad. published novels and movies need tighter pacing because they have time limits and page limits. TV shows have slower pacing because of the longer run times.

Fanfic allows you to create your own pacing in ways that would never work in other formats. Slow burn's pacing is in its namesake. The romance's pacing is glacial even if other elements aren't. Fanfic is also very forgiving. The audience does not expect perfect writing.

My method for posting regularly is literally I do not post a work before I have finished it. Otherwise, be kind to yourself. Create a schedule that accounts for when you have bad days. On a good day, ~1k takes an hour. On a bad day no writing at all. So if you think you can do 2 chapters a week in a good week maybe have a schedule that is once a week or once a week with bonus chapters. Or consider having a buffer of two or three chapters.

As for the last question, that's something you have to answer. I do many of the things AO3COTD says. Also, I have 1-3 friends I get part of my validation from. There's also writing friend groups. I encourage their writing and they encourage mine even if we don't always write each other. I am also lucky to have 1 or 2 people who just always get excited for my ideas.

But I want you to know the answer to keep writing doesn't have to be grand like improving your craft. I literally said several times as I finished a WIP 'be fucking finished already' and that was my motivation - self-induced spite/annoyance. It was so close to the end why was it not done. I've written stories to convince myself they would work. I pretend an idea is a ghost that is haunting me and will refuse to leave me alone.

There are honestly so many fics that exist because I looked around and went 'oh no this doesn't exist' and my brain would tell me 'you can kind of do this' then I made into a silly thing where it was my duty to bring it into the world because no one else will. I know you wanted advice for multichapter fic but I have a 2.8k fic that exists because I wanted dramatic lines. That was the only goal for me to have a fic that was essentially a bunch of dramatic lines inside a metaphor as far as I could extend it. I have a multi-chaptered fic I am planning to write because it'd be chaotic and I can tease my friend with it.

Because I know if I take things too seriously, I'll stop writing. I'll get into a head space that cares too much about doing it perfect that I won't do it at all.

Heya, hope you don't mind a few questions since I don't really know who to ask- what's a good way to establish/keep track of the pacing in a multichapter fic? I'm having trouble telling if mine is going well even though the people I've shown it so far say it's fine. And how do I keep the motivation to regularly post and update? Most of my fics are for a very rare pair I really love and some people read them, but the lack of readers sometimes really makes me struggle to keep writing :(

When it comes to pacing, I just try to make sure that there’s something in each chapter that moves the story forward. It might be moving the plot. It might be moving the characterization. But if there’s nothing in the chapter that keeps things rolling, then why is that chapter there? If your readers are asking that question, that’s when the pacing will feel off. 

The same is also true if you have a dozen things happening in a single chapter. That could work for the climax of your story, but if you’re doing it in every chapter and your chapters aren’t 20K or more, then that’s probably too much all in one go and your readers might want you to slow down. 

As for motivation, I strongly encourage you to find reasons to write and reasons to post that are disconnected from your readership. Readers come and go, fandoms wax and wane. You can’t control any of those sources of motivation. Tying your creativity to those benchmarks is just asking for a slump. 

Instead, celebrate improvements in your writing, meeting a word goal, keeping to a schedule of writing or posting, making yourself laugh or cry. Those are all things that are within your control.
