asra: has a traditionally feminine name asra: wears feminine clothing (see masquerade) non-binary: does not mean a blend of feminine and masculine but rather that it exists outside the binary, this could mean that a non-binary individual leans heavily feminine, masculine, or neither and presents as a blend, as heavily feminine/masculine, or changes it up depending on how theyre relating to their gender on a particular day
people: asra is bad nb representation because he does not present feminine enough in this essay i will-
#this isnt me hating on ppl who want rep that blends or leans heavily to the gender that a character wasnt assigned at birth#but non-binary does not mean you are afab who looks more masc or amab who looks more feminine#someones relation to their gender does not necessarily have to be spelled out in every aspect of their life#i am nonbinary but i still present most feminine as that is how my relationship to my gender is most days#do i still present as a blend or as masc? yes but that depends on how i am relating to my gender at any given time#and yes it should be pointed out to people who dont know that asra is nb because he does mainly seem quite masculine to people who dont-#-know better#people should absolutely clamour for more nb rep in media but just because asra doesnt fit a particular definition of nb doesnt mean hes-#-bad representation#his character his personality is not his gender and he doesnt have to make his every action spell out his gender#in fact for me personally i would prefer it if characters didnt spell out their gender through dialogue unless its part of something-#- i would love for people to be shown in subtle ways maybe a hint in dialogue or in their physical appearance or actions or whatever#but it should be treated#idk more casually or more normalized#rather than 'oh btw im nb/trans/etc' i would love it if it were a fact on a character sheet but not something that became so intertwined-#-with their character that it needs to be spelled out#but that would be just my preferred rep and its 100% valid and okay for people to want the opposite of what i want#if trans people want or write something like that- then thats the rep they want and thats important#but the subtlety in asra abt how hes nb and how its shown is something i love because i dont want part of his story to be about how hes nb#its important to designing him definitely but it doesnt dominate his character or personality#its a fact like how his hair is white and his eyes are purple its important but his kindness and his necromantic ways are what influences-#-his story#that is the kind of rep i love#and yes people could argue its a total dumbledore moment#but it isnt its just something thats subtle in his character design#absolutely create nb and trans characters please create more of them but you dont need to necessarily hit people over the head with it#you can be subtle and hint at it through the physical appearance or naming of your character and bring it up when you feel it impacts their-#-individual story#anyway
