So how did you go about writing ZWG? Like, how'd you outline it, etc.
So we start with a concept: ZTD has cool ideas but the execution is less than stellar, I want to execute those ideas a little better.
One issue I had with the execution was a lack of intermingling between the characters, but scenes with lots of moving characters like 999 aren’t my specialty, so I go with VLR-style trios. I want intermingling, so I want everyone to interact with everyone else.
Past Akane, there are 8 characters. Grouping them all without repeating gives me 28 pairs — we can split that into four groups of seven, so let’s make the initial choice have four options and branch out from there.
Okay, now we have four branches, how do we differentiate them from each other? We can use different settings, dissemination of information, and overarching themes.
Okay, we have our branches, now we have to assign pairs to them. The initial choice eliminates characters, so six characters have to split seven appearances between three branches (lot of math), so split them like 2-2-3 (or 3-3-1, in one case). The last two are spread throughout all four branches, so 2-2-2-1.
Now to divvy up the groups. Certain scenes MUST exist in certain branches, so I assign those first. Then I have to set up those scenes, which pair works best for set up? Assign those. Fill in the gaps leftover afterwards — this assignation is more about “what doesn’t work in this slot?”
I could tell you right now off the top of my head what Fragments go into which category — Conceptual, Setup, or Filler. When we get to the part of the story where I disclose Fragment order and start to reveal parts of the flowchart, I think I’ll do that in an author’s note.
