Capital is Sufficient (Part 2)
In last week’s post, I provided some data on how much physical capital has grown in the last one hundred years. When measured by certain proxies, such as the production of steel, it looks like about a 30x growth in the last 100 years and nearly 100x if you go back just two decades further to 1900. We also saw that significant growth has occurred since World War II, which as a first approximation is at least a 10x growth.
Now someone might suggest that this growth could all be due to the population explosion, but that’s not the case. Over the same timeframe the global population has grown a lot less: from 1900 to today a bit less than 5x and from the end of World War II to today only by a bit more than 3x. Put differently, the increase in physical capital has far outstripped population growth.
Tumblr media
Now one might still question whether this capital is sufficient to meet everyone’s needs as I have asserted. I believe that the strongest evidence for my claim comes from considering what happened during World War II. Here is a chart that shows how government share of GDP in the US spiked during the war years.
Tumblr media
Let’s dive a bit deeper and look at the manufacturing efforts. The US ramped production of tanks, airplanes, battleships and guns at an extraordinary clip in the war years. Here is a table that tabulates this for different weapons systems.
Tumblr media
The numbers are staggering. For example, in 1943 the US built 2654 major naval vessels. That’s more than 7 every day, or roughly one every three and half hours! In 1944 the US built over 74 thousand combat aircraft, that’s about 8.5 combat aircraft *every hour*.
We are not talking about simple devices here. These are complex high-performance systems with many components (think of the aircraft engines alone!). And that’s just the US production. There were similar scale efforts in Germany, Japan, the UK, and Russia. For example, adding up all the combat aircraft production in 1944 is 185 thousand units, which is 21 aircraft every hour.
Now here in the US while all of this production was happening, people were not starving, there was enough clothing, and were doing surprisingly well overall. But as we saw in last week’s post, the production of cars dropped dramatically — so how were people’s transportation needs met during this time? Through a massive increase in public transportation. The connection was made quite explicitly with the government running ads “When you ride alone, you ride with Hitler.” This is a perfect illustration of separating a need, transportation, from its solutions, in this case individual versus shared mobility.
The continued ability to meet needs while at the same time repurposing half or more of physical capital strongly supports the claim of sufficient capital. As a first approximation much of that capital was previously used to meet wants. And it went back to meeting wants after World War II which partially explains the tremendous economic boom of the post war years.
All of this is to say that today’s economy with at least an order of magnitude more capital than during World War II can easily meet our needs. Importantly it also means that we have plenty of additional capacity that could be allocated to solving the climate crisis. For example, we could dramatically ramp the production of everything from solar panels to nuclear reactors to heat pumps.
But there is more to be gleaned from what happened during World War II production. It isn’t just that we collectively made a lot of complicated stuff rapidly. We also innovated on extremely compressed time scales. The Manhattan project is the most obvious example of that which in a span of three years developed the nuclear bomb. It is hard to exaggerate how extensive this effort was, including for example uranium mining, as well as the exploration of several different bomb designs.
Important technologies were either invented or significantly advanced during World War II. For example, at the beginning of the war, radar was a nascent technology. Towards the end of World War II through the invention of the cavity magnetron, the Allies managed to build radars small and lightweight enough to put on planes. Penicillin, which had been discovered in 1928, was not widely used until mass production was unlocked as part of a secretive World War II effort.
Production and deployment at high volume also drove important improvements. Take fighter planes as an example. Early fighters had limited range which meant that bombers had to fly into enemy territory without escorts. Their only defense against local fighters were plane mounted machine guns. It was only as the war went on that escort fighters of sufficient range were developed to accompany bombers. This was made possible by a combination of technological advances, such as more powerful engines, and the insights gained from battle.
So what are the key takeaways? First, during peacetime mode much of the capital is used to meet wants not needs (the third installment in this post will look at this with regard to all the needs identified). Second, when switched into wartime mode, much of the productive capital can be redirected quickly towards accomplishing specific goals that are different from needs. This was already true at a much lower amount of physical capital per capita than is available today. Third, innovation can in fact be accelerated dramatically by focusing resources on critical problems.
The obvious threat we are facing today that requires a massive reallocation of -- and improvement in -- capital is the climate crisis. Whether this can be accomplished is determined entirely by what we choose to pay attention to. Hence, the defining scarcity of our time is attention, not capital.

I had one YouTube comment come in that I was willing to read and respond to. I’m fine sharing it here, along with my response. This was the original comment. “MarzGurl, you really need to stand up for yourself better and make a video and talk about this whole thing. I'm not gonna come out and say it out right, because I'm sure you have certain words banned from comments. When you left Channel Awesome, you had no qualms about making videos on that topic in the past, and you even discussed the situation with JewWario. But now with these current accusations you're floundering around, you have hardly done anything other than tweet day and night about it. If you really believe what you are saying, then prove it. Your primary audience is not Twitter, it's YouTube, and if you are directly involved with this, your audience has a right to know. Have a discussion video on your channel about this movement and don't hold back on it. Don't censor comments, don't hide the like bar, and be open with your full side of the situation. But be truthful with your facts as well, because plenty of people are willing to obviously prove you wrong if they don't. It's simply too coincidental that there are plenty other channels making videos and proving innocence, when there is no one more prominent than you that could make a video in response and prove them right. It doesn't need to be constant back and forthing, you can do just one video to acknowledge your involvement and be done with it. Just stop pretending this isn't going on and that you're not losing subscribers by the minute.“
And the following was my response.
Although this is off-topic for the video, this message was polite enough all things considered, so I will dignify it with a response. (For what it's worth, thank you, Mort, for your two cents.)
Here's why I don't make a video about it.
In general, I am not a drama channel. I had words to say about Channel Awesome because I was directly tied to them for nine years. That was a huge hunk of my adult life. And in regards to JewWario, there was no getting around the fact that my husband and I made a movie dedicated to him, only to turn around four years later and find out he was hurting people. There was no way I could NOT address that. That hurt like a bitch. Here I think I'm friends with a guy, and in the end he lied to me, to his wife, to other people he was cheating with, to all of his friends--hell, his wife didn't even know that Channel Awesome had fired him. I was way too personally involved, and that NEEDED to be addressed, especially because I thought I was proud of our movie we made. Now I hate it. I hate that we put so much time and effort into something, and involved all of these other people who thought THEY were doing the right thing, working on something THEY could be proud of. And in the end, it didn't mean anything. It hurts, man. Hurts like hell.
I don't tweet day and night about this. This isn't my life. Just because you can read a bunch of tweets really fast doesn't mean that it's all I think about. You just consume a bunch of it and think that's what life is. It's everybody else bringing it to my doorstep night and day, yourself included, that's what the reality is. My channel is not a place where I want Vic to take up residency. All those other channels? They accuse me of standing alongside victims for "clout" or to "give my channel attention" or whatever, never mind the fact that I haven't made any Vic content on my channel. Meanwhile, those other YouTubers are actively making a ton of money on the drama, and making entirely new videos every time I or someone else involved breathes. In personal opinion, that's pretty scummy, and I'm not out here trying to scrape cash from a dumpster fire. These are people's lives, Vic's included. I don't want YouTube attention OR money based on the lives of victims OR Vic. That doesn't seem to stop anybody else from doing it.
My Twitter audience and my YouTube audience are also very similar in numbers. People come to me on Twitter daily. YouTube is slow for me. And that's what I'm comfortable with. I have a life outside of YouTube, and nothing I do is with any explicit intention of doing it for more views. YOU might spend more time on YouTube. I do not. I could be wrong, but I would expect that you haven't spent much time with me or my content to understand that I have decided the pace in which I interact with each social media platform. Twitter is absolutely where I spend more time and where I talk to and reach more people. And I'm happy that way.
In the beginning, there were a handful of people trying to have a more rational discussion about this, not a screaming, angry rage-filled discussion. People who stood with victims. And every single one of those videos, even from a girl very calmly and rationally talking from the experience of having studied law, got shouted down in her comments and dislike-bombed. Anyone who has dared say anything in support of victims rather than Vic may as well have not even bothered, because the conspiracy theory channels out there have all radicalized tens of thousands of viewers who are now out there on a rampage and flooding every inch of every social media and jumping down everyone's throat. I can't say that people standing with #KickVic have not done similar things at all, which of course is reprehensible. But to say that it is equal in any way, shape, or form would be SEVERELY misleading. On the daily, I'm getting death threats or people wishing that I WOULD die, and I haven't even made a video. It would be 100x worse if I actually did.
Mind you, there is absolutely a part of me that would LOVE to talk about this, to pinpoint every step of the last two and a half months of this dumpster fire, and even to address how I have been an asshole in the distant past, too. But everything has shown me that it wouldn't matter at all, and that people wouldn't actually watch. They'd just stick to their biases and comment- and downvote-bomb.
HOWEVER, one day... MAYBE one day I would consider doing it. But here's what would have to happen.
This whole thing has to be over. And I mean REALLY over. Like, this whole court stuff that people say is going to happen? It has to actually happen. And it has to go all the way through, and it has to wrap up and end. Or any discussion of it happening has to finally drop. There has to be some indication that we are on the "other side" of this thing, and I don't know what that would be or when that would be. Because to make a video in the middle of it would just make MORE stuff happen that doesn't need to happen. I acknowledge my part in partially igniting a fire. But I'm not out here trying to make a video which amounts to throwing gasoline on that fire. Leave that to the conspiracy theorist channels. They're doing a fine enough job of that all on their own.
Those 300-some-odd people who unsubscribed? Cool. Let them. Out of 18,000, I'm completely content with that. If that was the ONLY number of people who can't understand that the victims should be at the very least listened to and that the conspiracy theorists are out for clicks and money and don't really care about Vic or the situation at all and just want to stick it to the NPC SJWs or whatever it is they're terrified of, then I'm absolutely fine with where I'm at. All the other tens of thousands of people currently at my doorstep? You weren't watching me in the first place, and you were never going to. You were never going to subscribe to me, and I wasn't out to get your subs. In reality? Little to nothing in my life has changed. I'm gonna just keep going about my normal routine. I'd suggest you and others do the same, but I'm not so naive as to think you'll do me (or yourselves) that courtesy.
Anyway. That's where I'm at on the subject of making a video on the topic. In summary, for the time being, that is a staunch NO, unless there is VERY CLEARLY a light at the end of the tunnel in all of this.
Have a good day.

headcanons : misc.
RE: MORE IMPORTANT/HEAVIER HEADCANONS RELATING TO CASSANDRA
alright so, since capella fell into a civil war when cassandra was 11, that’s kind of when she stopped going to school. ioavis was such a volatile time in her life as well- and forte and theon didn’t know shit about teaching a kid (beyond their respective professions). thea helped cassandra a little bit, but cassandra’s training as an augur came first.
it was only after cassandra had landed on pyrrah and met keandra again that she resumed any type formal education. while trying to read capellan texts on her inclination, cassandra realized just how poor her reading skills were. keandra tutored cassandra- honestly, he was the only one she would trust to help her. cassandra hates more than anything feeling st*pid, and would only let keandra see her that vulnerable.
cassandra learned enough math and science to maintain and fly her ship, and studied the history of many different planets- she only has a shallow knowledge of each one, since she was aiming to learn about as many as possible. cassandra also seriously resumed her studies in astrography that her grandmother had gotten her started on.
now cassandra has an above average reading level in capellan, and average reading levels in standard and english, and a very basic reading level in french.
alright so- at about age..14 or 15, cassandra stopped crying. cassandra’s time on ioavis was marked by constant high levels of stress, and for about ten years, when faced with something tragic or something that would make her cry, instead she would just shut down. in addition to just high stress, theon was…kind of an asshole. forte and theon both were. you know that one scene in “a league of their own” where tom hanks’ character yells at one of the players and says “there’s no crying in baseball!” yeah, theon and cassandra had a similar encounter. this idea of crying being a weakness was something theon instilled in her.
cassandra did not cry after forte’s death, instead she just went numb. she didn’t speak, she didn’t eat- once she started feeling again, she turned all that grief into anger, and that’s pretty much what got her through the rest of her time on ioavis- just running off anger.
after leaving ioavis, cassandra went to train with thea, and it could not have come at a better time. thea helped cassandra work through her issues- she still struggles with depression, along with enormous amounts of survivors guilt, but thea helped her learn how to cope with it all.
but cassandra didn’t really break down and cry until she saw keandra again. cassandra was overfilled with joy and relief- she wasn’t the last capellan! she wasn’t all alone in the universe. cassandra and keandra both cried for a good twenty minutes, and that’s kind of the turning point for cassandra. when she needs to, she cries. she tends to be an angrier crier.
see, cassandra might seem like she’s careless with fire- when she’s around people who know about her, she does use it pretty freely. but…she’s got an insane amount of control over it. the fact that she is able to use her powers so nonchalantly is a testament to how many hours she’s put into honing her inclination. she never starts a fire she can’t put out or one that will hurt someone unintentionally.
cassandra, in general, cultivates this reputation of being carefree and just…chill but almost in a bad way. she also acts kinda…airheaded at times too.  like, oh she’s so flippant and clueless, she can’t possibly be dangerous. she wants her enemies to underestimate her.
…but when a friend calls into question her control or competence, cassandra gets very hurt. she is more than she appears to be, and she has put in so much time and energy honing her inclination and her clairvoyance- to have that insulted, however mildly, gets cassandra very upset.
after the fall of capella, cassandra couldn’t stand how silent her ship was- which seemed huge and sterile to a traumatized twelve year old. so she turned to music to fill that void. now…capellans have a slightly different view of music that humans simply because music is just…talking? or at the very least, instrumental music can be used to convey ideas and emotions. so it was less…music music and more of just background chatter.
when atlas was destroyed and dulcie died, cassandra was completely overwhelmed by the silence, both in her head, since she had gotten so used to atlas’ presence, and…in her life. paola was still there but nothing was the same. so, again, cassandra turned to music. now that her perception of music has changed from simply talking to this emotional outlet, it meant more i think?
when cassandra gets to earth, she’s that neighbor that always has her music too loud and while she always apologizes…she rarely changes it for long. it’s a huge coping mechanism but she’s rarely comfortable enough with someone to actually say that.
this is why cassandra takes immense joy in how loud her family is. she isn’t bothered in the slightest and will?? never police them on their volume. her fear of silence does start to lessen, but it never goes away. and she’s honestly just developed a love?? of noise because of it.
cassandra very rarely loses her temper honestly?? she’s not the yelling and screaming type unless it’s with someone she cares deeply about - the two obvious (and mostly likely) ones paola and splinter. when cassandra gets angry, she’s far more prone to storming away and sulking than yelling, so that she can recollect herself and not say something that she’ll regret.
when does lose her temper and gets extremely angry, she starts crying. but she hates this, and if you back down because she’s crying, it’ll only make her angrier.
and in an argument, she’s far more likely to wear a poker face and map out the conversation via her clairvoyance. again, only paola and splinter really see her get worked up in the moment and just keep barreling through the argument whilst angry.
okay so, because earth’s gravity is so much weaker than capella’s, cassandra will wake up some nights, usually disoriented by her visions, and feel almost completely weightless- like she’s just going to fly off the surface of the earth. this is a terrifying experience for cassandra- despite the fact that she loves floating in her ship’s gravity chamber, the feeling like she’s going to fly right off the earth is so scary because she has no control over it.
if she’s sleeping alone, she’ll grab the edges of the mattress, as if trying to keep herself from flying away. if she’s with splinter, she’ll usually accidentally wake him up when she wakes up, and ask him to either hold her or lay on her. the feeling of his arms holding her tightly or the weight of his body on top of her makes her feel grounded. he’ll usually whisper affirmations to her (”you’re safe, you’re alright, this is real, i’m here, nothing’s going to harm you”) until she relaxes enough to fall back asleep.
the thing about adjusting to earth’s climate is that everything that’s different from capella was a million times worse on pyrrah.
it was so much hotter on pyrrah than it is on earth, and definitely than it was on capella. so cassandra eventually got used to that.
as for culture…cassandra lived in france for the first…two years? i think it was? maybe three- on earth, and cassandra had done a lot of research on earth in general, but especially on france, in the two months it took her to get there. i haven’t really thought much about her time in france- that’s something i need to work on tbh
cassandra doesn’t understand american politics at all. on capella there was lot more involvement in politics and everyone was critical of it- especially because of the ‘capellan cycle’, where a government would exist on capella for a few centuries before being overthrown and replaced for a few more centuries. so especially for cassandra, who was the daughter of a political thinker and revolutionary, and a capellan who grew up at the end of the current government’s cycle, she grew up very critical of authority and very aware of what was going on in the government. so the way americans know they’re unhappy with their government, but always know exactly what’s wrong with it or how to fix it, and are at times unwilling to put in the effort to change it…doesn’t make sense to cassandra
another thing cassandra doesn’t understand is like…consumerism. like this culture of constantly buying more, or espECIALLY things being made to be broken and replaced. for most of capella’s history resources were scarce, so shit had to be built to last for a LONG time. and this mindset never went away, even when capella began trading with other planets. so cassandra’s just ???? at how everything on earth is made to be replaced.
cassandra always gets very solemn and quiet on the day capella fell, lost in her own thoughts and guilt, and she usually reaches out to keandra (and to a lesser extent, brooklyn) on that day because they’re all in bad places on that day.
also consider- everyone knowing this is a bad day for cassandra and doing their best to make her smile in their own ways. everyone gives her 100x more hugs and makes sure she knows that they love her
it should be noted that before getting to pyrrah, with the exception of her time without her ship on ioavis, cassandra pretty much lived off of the food stored in her capellan caravel. usually these foods are dehydrated to make them last longer, and while they’re not…especially tasty, there was enough on the ship for 50+ people to live on for one year. so cassandra really had no need for money, since capellan ships don’t use fuel like earth ships do, and there were uniforms on board for clothing.
however, most of the clothing was far too big for cassandra, who was very short by capellan standards when she was a child, and this was the primary reason she learned how to sew- so she could make adjustments so she wasn’t tripping over her pants at the very least.
when on pyrrah, cassandra began an apprenticeship under a ship mechanic, and after a year cassandra was offered a job there. at the time, she was living with the royal family, so again…she pretty got whatever she needed, and all the money she made was saved up.
later on, after leaving pyrrah and parting ways with keandra, cassandra began to take up work as a translator, working with countless universities and libraries across the galaxy and translating thousands of audio files, all recorded in capellan.
while it is possible to understand capellan without knowing the meaning of the way it’s sung, a lot of subtle details are lost that way. so cassandra’s knowledge of the capellan language was sought after by many, especially since she’s thought to be one of the last two capellans left.
working as a translator also allowed cassandra to work while still traveling- having any and all files that needed translation sent to her ship.
on cassandra’s ship there’s a bunch of pictures on this shelf of
paola, cassandra and keandra
cassandra and dulcie
cassandra’s family photo
cassandra and brooklyn
cassandra, brooklyn, jayjay and owl
cassandra, brooklyn, keandra, and dulcie
cassandra, keandra, paola & the royal family of pyrrah
cassandra,oriel, nikola, theon, and forte
honestly the worst thing about work is that she can’t just say “i have a family emergency” because no one knows she has a family. so a lot of people think she’s flaky and unreliable when really, she’s just a good mom trying to help her sons take on an alien invasion.
this is somewhat resolved by the end of season one, because josie becomes the new fire chief (something that might have gone to cassandra had she not had to leave work so frequently), and josie knows that cassandra is an alien and that she’s protecting…someone. josie doesn’t know about the turtles completely just yet.
by season three, josie knows everything, and will cut cassandra slack when she says she has an emergency, which helps ease cassandra’s mind a lot once the city is back in order.
fireproof clothing is the norm on capella and it’s easy to find throughout the galaxy simply because there are so many races that can create/manipulate fire or are fireproof themselves, but before cassandra got her hands on a good amount of fireproof clothes, she frequently burned off the sleeves of her shirts by accident. her fire generally starts behind her shoulders and is pushed down her arms, and then out. so eventually cassandra had…no sleeves on her shirts.
now, however, most of her wardrobe is fireproof so she doesn’t have to worry about that anymore.
cassandra undergoes her final inclination shift near the end of ‘winter in the woods.’ the emotions that cassandra has used to power/anchor her inclination are, in this order; rage, guilt, wonder, and love.
after dulcie’s death, her inclination fizzles out for about six months. she feels numb, and therefore has nothing to power her inclination with. when she gets to earth, it’s a little better, but she doesn’t have that strong emotional core that she used to, so she’s relying on passing emotions.
if anything, her powers are loosely tied to her pride, since every time she uses her powers to a greater extent, she’s trying to show off. but she has no…real core to rely on here. and because she’s falling in love with this family, it’d make sense for her to connect her powers to that love.
in later chapters of “winter in the woods,” she uses her powers more and more, and it’s out of a desire to protect, because of that love she has. and once the main plot of witw is over, it’d make so much sense that’d it happen almost subconsciously.
cassandra admits to being afraid to her loved ones fairly easily. she only puts up a tough facade if she’s face to face with an enemy. she’ll admits she is/was scared, then reassure her loved ones that it’s okay if they were scared too. and this is something she got from her mothers- cammilyn would freely admit when she was nervous before a speech, and evelyn was always honest when she was afraid. knowing someone else is scared can help one feel better- knowing that their fears are nothing to be ashamed of, and that even if they’re scared, they can still move forward, and make everything turn out okay

What Is The Difference Between Having A Child With Cancer & One With Schizophrenia? A Casserole Dish.
“.......A few weeks ago, Michael pulled a knife and threatened to kill me and then himself after I asked him to return his overdue library books. His 7- and 9-year old siblings knew the safety plan -- they ran to the car and locked the doors before I even asked them to. I managed to get the knife from Michael, then methodically collected all the sharp objects in the house into a single Tupperware container that now travels with me. Through it all, he continued to scream insults at me and threaten to kill or hurt me.-Liza Long”
http://www.post-gazette.com/opinion/Op-Ed/2012/12/23/I-am-Adam-Lanza-s-mother-My-son-threatens-to-kill-me-I-ve-tried-everything-everything-is-not-enough/stories/201212230224
Tumblr media
Most of us go into parenthood with rose colored glasses….with the motive to instill and implement every idealistic concept that was ingrained into our psyche from childhood to young adulthood (and unlike our parents and all the other slacker parents we observe around us….come hell or high water we were going to be SUPER successful doing it).    Right?  I mean how many times have childless parents (including myself) been at a restaurant, entertainment venue or even a family function and thought to our self….”OMG. I’ll NEVER let my child act like that!....I’ll Never blah, blah, blah…..They should do x, y and z” because “we know”.
Tumblr media
Then maybe down the road that time comes when we are “blessed” with this little human creature…this “bundle of joy”...our own ‘mini-me’. We love this little baby/child more than our self.   The dreams of their future success’s are bounding in our heads.....but slowly they grow and sometime sooner than later the cold reality sets in (for some more than others) that “laying down the law” and “controlling” this little person who has the ultimate goal of seeking full independence isn’t quite as easy or cut and dry as many imagined it would be.  Now, let me preface that there are ALL kinds of circumstances that cause increased challenges…whether it’s financial, relationship or health issues…etc (the list goes on and on). There is always something to put a ‘strain’ on your life which makes the art of “parenting” 100x more difficult…That said, parenting a child in what’s considered the “ideal” situation ie- where there is a 2 person relationship for that “tag team emotional support”, financial stability, living in a clean environment with a child who has no extensive health issues IS already difficult and demanding as it is….but what if your child has extreme mental illness?  What if your child can’t control their rage? What if your child is abusive to you, animals, siblings, classmates? What if you’ve reached out to doctor after doctor and you’re just going in circles?  What if your child is written prescription after prescription and your bathroom cabinet becomes a small pharmacy? What if you become so fearful of your child that you sleep with your door locked?  You have a weapon under your pillow?  You have to have an emergency plan in place…..No one plans on birthing or raising a Nikolas Cruz or an Adam Lanza.  You can’t spank the mental illness out of a child…..you can’t retrain, instill better morals, improve religious proficiency and maximize their appreciation and love for God and expect them to be “cured” of their manic tendencies or severe depression b/c you’re “parenting is on point”.  Mental illness is many times undiagnosed, misdiagnosed and extremely complex to treat/manage any one illness (and many people have multiple disorders and end up on a cocktail of drugs) to which every single person responds differently.
Tumblr media
There was a time in our not to distant past when mental hospitals/asylums were plentiful….They kept people for long intervals or life time commitments.  But due to the abuse of power, lack of funding, and institutionalizing people who were sometimes not mentally ill at all, most have been closed down.  For decades now “Deinstitutionalizing” has been a government effort and everyone is mainstreamed into the community…..some into long term care facilities…others just ‘out’.  Many end up on the streets homeless and wandering, many commit a potpourri of crimes and eventually live out their lives in prison…and others just ‘exist’ being drug addicts moving from family member to friend...going in and out of hospitals for various medical issues.  Which brings me back to my point for writing this….
https://www.thebalance.com/deinstitutionalization-3306067
It’s my opinion that we’ve done a great disservice to our country and communities by closing down psychiatric facilities.  Some people are severely mentally ill.  Families are living in fear and hopeless. Some people need extensive help and long term management….some people need to be committed and never released. Others may need long indefinite stays.  Unfortunately, mental illness isn’t easily controlled.  The ugly reality is that it’s a cycle.  Many higher functioning people will get help, start managing their issues, feel better, stop managing b/c they feel better and then get worse….once symptoms magnify they will sometimes become paranoid, self medicate with alcohol and drugs and not believe what they’re being told. Now it’s the ‘norms’ trying to convince them to ‘seek help’ again.  No one can legally FORCE someone who is an adult and mentally ill to be committed to an institution/hospital involuntarily....you can’t make them get assistance if they don’t want it.  Can’t happen.  Unless that person is threatening to hurt them self or others they can NOT be committed without their consent.  Here’s the kicker of modern mental healthcare….if they are committed…..they go away for usually 2 weeks (30 days tops)-this also applies to minors.  So, I threaten to kill you….I’ll be ‘fixed’ in 2 weeks? Usually after a stay they come out ‘snowed’.  Doped up on drugs.  It’s a vicious cycle.  The people who think “fixing the mental healthcare system” will help change our country’s problems are wearing “rose colored glasses”.  One step towards improving it.....is affording a massive amount of coverage specifically for MENTAL healthcare (which in our penny pinching system wont happen) ...but many of the people who need this the most can’t even work, let alone have “good” benefits *b/c they are mentally ill! But society has already labeled them “lazy” ….  We need mental health institutions where people go to live (that costs lots of $.....wont happen)…. We need to stop ignoring the fact that everyone isn’t meant to co-habitat out in everyday society.  This isn’t a PARENTING PROBLEM.  It’s a lack of society understanding problem.  And as much as this isn’t a gun control rant....if you are getting advanced psych assistance...you should never be able to legally attain a gun. Common sense stuff.
Tumblr media
As in the video I posted below....The mom of one of the mentally ill children stated “the difference between having a child with a physical injury or a disease like cancer and having one with mental illness is the lack of sympathy from family and friends....(Casseroles....no one sends casseroles or dinners when your child is a mental mess). B/c there is a fear.”
I couldn’t agree more.  There is a stigma attached to mental illness and people aren’t empathetic to the struggle. It’s invisible incurable demon of a disease. Appreciate not only your physical health but your mental health. Don’t take being ‘sane’ for granted....and don’t think ‘better parenting’, more God, and getting rid of all the guns will stop mass shootings...it wont.  My 1/2 cent.

just handed in my research poster which means everything for sem 1 honours is FINISHED. now i can breathe for the first time since early March I have a) started pumping life into NSAR (which didn’t look like it was going to happen this year), b) collected photos to update the o-week board, c) begun catching up on like 10 issues of the tce I didn’t even look at lmao. some interesting things:
1. development of single-stage heavy water production using graphene which is 100x less energy intensive (shit u don’t even think of you know, like everyone’s harping on about uranium in the nuclear industry but nobody thinks of the heavy water)
2. lithium ion battery recycling - should repurpose batteries to power houses before throwing them out as they still have 70% “state of health” left by the time they won’t work in a car anymore. batteries can be tested for potential/impedance/runaway to determine what applications they’re suited to next
3. (almost) front page article about SA’s energy plan lol. it is june so some announcement about solar thermal should be coming out soon...theres some old news about the federal government setting aside funds for solar but that’s only to help get private investment started. also a well-timed feature on solar thermal research - “it’s much easier to store heat in an insulated tank than it is to store electricity in batteries”
4. researchers in the US managed to create a ransomware that can take over a (simulated) water treatment plant, which is kinda cool as fuck... they were able to command control valves through the PLCs and threaten to dump large amounts of chlorine into the water system
5. April’s theme was CCS but I’m still a firm non-believer. it’s not even the cost factor (if it was expensive but would really help the environment I would probably be for it): it’s the fact it’s so energy-intensive, will increase the amount of coal a power station has to burn just to facilitate the capture, then the transport and processing of the CO2 requires yet more energy. and then how about emissions from transport, which aren’t going to get touched? It’s like spending a lot of effort to piece a broken window back together, when we could just stop smashing the windows in the first place lmao. i.e. cut our energy consumption through smart technology, policy and education. I’ve held this opinion for ages now. I think we need to cut consumption at the source to have an effect rather than trying to deal with the consequences After the fuel has been burned. someone can try to convince me another day when im not trying to speed through 10 issues lol
6. Marselisborg wastewater treatment plant in Denmark which uses the energy generated from waste to power the city’s entire water treatment network. It also has a control system which meters air supply based on ammonia concentrations and not dissolved oxygen, this saves 700k kWh/year - now that, in comparison, is some good shit (literally). can we please focus on improving efficiency instead of trying to clean up the mess after we’ve done our process in an unnecessarily energy-intensive way (honestly that’s literally all I think CCS is). can you tell i love control
7. treatment of end-of-service refrigerants by injecting them into cement kilns, where they break down into acidic gases and are neutralised by the basic lime (this is so fucking cool, I think I posted about it before but idgaf). The resulting harmless solids are then just incorporated into the cement. High temperatures needed to break down refrigerants are already present in the kilns, and almost complete (99.999%) destruction is achievable. i love this so much

http://dudeblade.tumblr.com/post/159435864121/context-for-the-not-going-to-elaborate-on-side-or#notes
I can’t believe it’s come to this but I must tackle MULTIPLE people at the same time.
Get ready everyone, this is gonna be a rough one.
From the OP, we have the following:
Miles and kerry stated that because of the tumblr fandom disliking the jaune arc they aren’t going to do arcs for other characters. Which when writing a story heavy series and trying to make it sound smart and well written is not an excuse.
Considering the fact that Ren and Nora, Weiss, Blake and Yang all had an arc, I have to assume that was a joke they made that you took out of context. maybe if I had a link or source to see for myself and be proven wrong otherwise but nope, no source I’ll just make my own assumptions.
So jaune a side character got little establishment and barely even stuck to it. (note the “This is all I ever wanted to be.” Yet neglected all study portions) and the actual 4 main characters of team rwby get no arcs cause people complained about jaune.
I saw Jaune slack off once in the entire series. That is it. And in that very same scene, Nora and Pyrrha were slacking off as well so it’s not just jaune. And consider the fact that Jaune in Volume 4 is constantly training as shown in Episode 2 of Volume 4 that is obviously not true that he hasn’t stuck to his character.
Also: Jaune is a main character. It has been confirmed by Monty himself that Jaune and his team are main characters. This is a GOOD thing as this means there is at least two male main characters in a female eccentric show meaning RWBY is officially putting in more effort to actually be progressive than most so called “progressive” shows.
And again: Weiss, Blake and Yang had arcs in this very volume so again, this seems like you’re just ignoring whatever you want to justify your hate to Miles, which puts your entire criticism at risk.
“You wanna elaborate on how ruby’s a tactician?”  Miles: “Nope.”
Midn providing a link? Because otherwise, I can point out that RWBY devised the plan to kill the Nevermore in EPisode 8 so Miles SHOULDN’T need to point out the obvious to you. This isn’t Evangelion where symbolism and insanity runs rampant so there’s no excuse to miss points like this.
Lesser writers of a lower station than RT would be flayed alive if they gave that response.
I highly doubt that. That would just be looked over and ignored: you’re just being ind of nitpicky.
And insert a lazy gif here and that’s it for Sokumo. Result- Poorly made, relying entirely on the rwde audience having  lot of hate for Miles.
Next up we have Sageyanna to tackle. Luckily this is pretty short.
Writers outside RT could be flayed alive because they dont get the Cultish RT Fandom Protection™ that MKG get.
Considering the fact that so many in the rwde tag twist their critics words to make them seem like the bad guys when they aren’t agreeing with them (myself discluded for obvious reasons) and you yourself have said that black people who don’t agree with you are coons as @mageknight14  can attest, your group has a much more cultish attitude than the main fandom which has evolved beyond that.
And that’s it. Result- Hypocritical.
Next up is someone named Xenodweeb...Yeah, the name doesn’t make sense to me either.
Like seriously, if Konami did this shit, you’d get like 10 #FucKonami News bits from Jim Sterling out of it and they’d feel the wrath of a dozen salty communities.
And Konami has about 100x the fanbase of RT so that just tells me that the rwde tag is toxic enough to account for 12 communities.
However, just because Takeshi0′s circle co-opted the fandom, all of this is suddenly above criticism and doing so makes you a “troggled pro-censorship SJW cuck.”
... All this tells me is that you have a personal grudge against @takashi0 and that you don’t understand that the fandom as a whole is pretty accepting of criticism. Also, rwde has had some very strong Radical Social Jsutice views in it to the point that they kind of mirror actual misogyny just in reverse, blaming guys for everything. As in, I hardly hear criticism about females in rwde. so he might have a point there. Dunno what a “cuck” means.
Result- bias accusation and fundamental misunderstanding of fanbase size.
like people already pointed out that jaune’s had too much screentime to miles. it was like during volume 2 or something, and miles and kerry said theyd work on that. lol no work happened and jaune ended up being the “And Knuckles” of the show and now theyre getting pissed because fans dont like it?????? miles and kerry need to hire some different writers
But they have. Jaune was written down to being a support character for Pyrrha in Volume 3 and has been written down as a support character for Ruby in Volume 4. He hasn’t had the focus of Volume 1 or even 2 in a long time.
And considering Miles and Kerry are the ones who made RWBY alomgside Monty and you demand they step down before they’re ready, that’s akin to demanding Burnie step down from RvB before his time: It’ll do nothing but damage.
Result- Ignorance of acknowledged and fixed flaws.
Next up we have Sageyanna in his new URL. Fantastic.
More like RWBY ended up being the &Knuckles. Jaune & RWBY.
In Volume 4, The amount of focus the main characters got are as follows: Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Oscar, Ren and Nora, Yang, Jaune. Jaune, unlike even Yang, had barely any focus on himself: it was all used to develop Ruby, it was all Ruby’s focus using Jaune as a tool. That is fundamentally wrong.
And the problem is that THEY are the writers. And both have high RT positions and several dozens of layers of Cultish RT Fandom Protection.
No, the problem is that all of you have shown yourselves untrustworthy as you bully and harass people without end be it the writers or the fandom. You will call anyone who defends the a cultish, basically demanding everyone change around you instead of changing yourself. If you could just stop insulting Miles and Kerry and the fandom then people will actually listen.
Unless they REALLY fuck up (and I am talking about a literal catastrophe here, because RT have really low standards for this kind of shit), they wont move. Ever. Probably not even get a reprimand.
You said “Jaune is getting too much screentime” they gave him less screentime, you said they ignored you. It’s pretty obvious why they aren’t listening to you: you have proven yourselves unworthy of paying attention. Only I, someone with almost no self worth, listen to you and even tehn it’d to try and cork your hole. All it takes is some respect and restraint to be worthy of listening.
If shit didnt change when Shane’s letter happened, I cant think of a thing that will make RT stop hiding behind their massive apologist cult fandom. Again.
That’s because Shane was depressed and his letter was obviously biased as he wrote up entire pages of things that had no relation to RT outside of getting sympathy. And instead of getting him to the hospitial, people in your community used his depression to attack RT, going as far as to use MONTY against them. Honestly, they’re only as much of a cult as you are. Perhaps try being nicer.
Result- Hypocrisy and name calling.
And finally we have Dudeblade.
I signed on to watch four kickass girls fighting monsters. Not some badly-written attention whore who apparently isn’t morally obligated to send Pyrrha’s stuff to her parents because Creator’s Pet™.
*Lets out a frustrated sigh* If Jaune was a creator’s pet then his entire purprose in Volumes 3 and 4 wouldn’t be building up other characters. His strategies wouldn’t be used as jokes, eh wouldn’t fail at every corner, eh wouldn’t get crocthed shotted, he wouldn’t be outted as the elader of his team to Ruby, he wouldn’t get the rape face from Tyrian, eh wouldn't get glared at by everyone for calling out Qorw, he would attribute what little character development he had to Ruby and his upgrade wouldn’t result in him getting bitchslapped..
Jaune is not the main focus: he never was and he certainly isn’t now. I don’t now why you insist in it so: eventually the writers will give up and actually do it then what will you do? You’re complaints will have actually damamged the show and the writers all because you can’t understand that a female eccentric show can have a strong male cast.
Final Result: Very skewed Perspectives and massive hypocrisy.
Advice: Calm down and think or try being kinder or just stop.

5 Tips for More Efficient Marketing Operations: Part One
In a recent webcast hosted by Digital Marketing News and Workfront, Chris Penn, VP of Shift Communications and Shawn Dickerson, Director of Solutions Marketing at Workfront, teamed up to talk about improving workflows through automation, how to do the right work, how to manage ad hoc tasks, and how to avoid “fake work.” This is the first in a series of three blog posts focused on the insights they shared.
Shawn: I want to begin our discussion of marketing operations just talking a little bit about the evolution of the role. If you go back a few years, marketing operations looked something like this graphic.
You had a couple of refugees from IT, or maybe some information systems majors that wanted a social life. And so they decided to join the marketing team and they were charged with creating an access database for some marketing contact and putting together an email system. Of course today, times have changed and now the operations team looks a lot more like this.
Because increasingly, marketing operations is marketing. The tools, the technology, the processes that we use are inseparably connected to the work that we do, whether it’s content marketing or social media or account-based marketing or whatever discipline. And quite honestly, that integration is fantastic in a myriad of ways, but it also presents some challenges.
Because if your marketing operation’s efforts are inefficient, if it takes too long to create a Marketo campaign, or to produce an attribution report, or to do a bulk import of list contacts you got from a show, all the rest of your marketing activities can be impacted. Here’s how a couple of researchers from McKenzie, David Edelman and Jason Heller, put it:
“Marketing operations is certainly not the sexiest part of marketing but it is becoming one of the most important.”
Marketing ops may not be the flashiest of responsibilities, but as we talked about, it’s integral to everything we are doing in marketing. Jascha Kaykas Wolff from Mozilla, certainly a thought leader in the world of marketing, said it similarly:
“More and more, the functioning of marketing operations becomes the lynchpin of a strong marketing team.”
But to be that lynchpin, marketing operations has to be efficient. It can’t be a bottleneck, and there are some obstacles that do exist. I want to turn it over to Chris now to talk about a summary of some of those top problems.
Chris: You’ve probably seen a graphic that looks like this:
Think about your modern marketing. Think about what you’re doing today. Would you classify your marketing as fast? Would you classify it as cheap? Would you classify it as good?
Many of the marketers I talk to on a daily basis feel like two out of three would be great! Where they often are is that they’re good at their output, but it’s not fast, and it’s certainly not cheap. Our stakeholders are saying, “You’re asking for 5 percent more or 10 percent more, but maybe we’re not seeing 5 to 10 percent more results out of your marketing organizations, so why should we give you this money?”
Today we’re going to talk about to how to get some of the fast back. As for cheap, we’ll leave that for another time. But fast, being more agile, being more responsive; these are not terms just for the design of your website. These are terms for the design of our marketing infrastructure.
In the promotion for this event, we talked about what it means to be a “10x marketer” and how to become one. This is a term that came up about four years ago and was first applied to developers.
There is such a thing as a 10x developer—a developer who is ten times more effective, ten times more proficient, ten times more productive than the average developer. Think about your own organization. Is there somebody like that? Do you suspect that there could be somebody like that in your organization? Probably a lot of you are saying eh, there are some people who are good people, really good people. But I can’t think of anybody whose work can replace ten other people.
The reason for your hesitation is that, as Ben Affleck’s character shouted in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, “Okay, they’re talking about fictional characters. Fictional characters.”
For the most part, outside of development, they don’t exist. Why is that? Well, it can be true for true developers because one algorithm, one piece of code, can drastically improve the productivity of a system. But our marketing role is dealing not with systems solely; we are also dealing with people and people do not scale to 10x in the same way that a system can scale to 10x or 100x.
So the 10x marketer is largely a fiction. But think about our goal. Our goal is to do things 10x better than we have been. There are a lot of different ways to get to a factor of ten:
You can add ten people, and then 10x more people than you had.
You could take five people, and with tools and technology, make them twice as productive.
Maybe there’s some “fake work,” like checking the email or going to meetings, that you can cut down by half and replace that time with more productive time, you could still get to that factor of ten.
Maybe you could add another person and multiply the productivity of three more people in your organization.
Maybe there’s one thing, one person, one process, one task that you do that’s a minus five in your productivity. The No. 1 minus five for me is meetings. If I could get out of more meetings, I could recruit a huge amount of time and efficiency and effort.
10x marketers may be fictional but 10x process improvement is very real. You can add more people, you can add better processes, you can add some software to help the humans maybe become twice as productive; maybe cut out half of the fake work that we do every day and make the most of that time. Because remember, we have a cap.
“Add more people, add better processes, add some software to help the humans become twice as productive.”
There are new studies that have said that our productivity limit in an average work week caps out at around 55 hours, which is still an 11-hour day. So, if you have people who are saying “I work 80 hours,” well 25 of those hours are wasted. You may as well not show up because people cannot process like a machine, and you’ll burn those people out really fast.
How do we get to those 10x processes? How do we build towards them? We’re going to talk about five different strategies this blog series.
1. Prioritizing with Purpose
Shawn:          Our first efficiency gain here we want to talk about is prioritizing with purpose. That means getting the right people doing the most important work first. This sounds easy enough, until you start thinking about your request process, or how work actually gets to you and your team, particularly in the case of a marketing operations group.
For most of us, requests come in a dozen different ways; emails, voicemails, drive-bys at your desk, sticky notes, a hallway conversation with an executive, and so on. When the work to be done is spread across so many different channels, it’s nearly impossible to prioritize effectively. You end up in most cases servicing the stakeholder who yells the loudest, or maybe the project that seems the most fun. And some requests quite honestly just get dropped altogether because they’re buried in an email thread somewhere or on a sticky note on your coworker’s desk.
So Chris, what have you seen and what can we do about this?
Chris: I really liked how you talked about importance and urgency. Priority in our organization is a function of four variables:
Importance. How important is the task?
Urgency. How urgent is the task? And remember, something that’s urgent doesn’t have to be important.
Ease. How long is it going to take to get the thing done?
Visibility. If you can’t see it, it’s not important.
Regarding visibility, if your manager and your stakeholders can’t see it, you may actually be asked: so what do you do all day? That is a career-ending question. You want to make sure you never, ever hear that question.
For some of the things that we do, we have a common task management system that is highly visible and allows us to gauge importance, urgency and ease. It’s called a Kanban board, swim lane, or whatever you want to call it.
In this image you see five columns, moving from left to right:
Backlog—stuff that is not in progress right now but we know we need to do it.
In Progress—what people are working on now. The different colors are actually different people on my team and the work that they’re doing.
Blocked—what people are not able to do because of external blockage of some kind.
To Be Reviewed—so you did the thing but it can’t be delivered until someone takes a look at it.
Done—this is the work that’s nice and complete; we got that out of the queue.
It’s important to have a system like this, because it gives everybody visibility into what’s happening. We can all crowdsource and pool our resources to help with urgency, importance, and ease. It’s very efficient. I may have somebody on my team who’s like: “Well, this is going to take me about two hours to do.” And I might have someone else say: “I can do that in ten minutes. I’m good at databases or I’m good at setting up the marketing automation campaign.”
If you are working solo or you don’t have as big of an operation, you may want to look at what’s called an Eisenhower matrix, which is a two-by-two grid.
No matter what system you use, it’s super important when you’re prioritizing just to have that visibility, even for yourself. I know personally if I don't have it on a wall and visible, I will forget about things. Because I get somewhere between 1,700 and 1,900 emails per day. If you send me an email, I’m not going to remember it; it’s just going to vanish into this giant black hole.
The second thing which is going to be super important is giving people reasons to gather; giving people motivation to want to share stuff. Now, there are tangible things you can do, like bringing in donuts. But also, you want people to have that reason to gather because they know if they show up, if they participate, their workload could actually end up being lighter.
When you matrix your work across an organization, everybody can help pick up things and move things along and collaborate, and make decisions on the spot. This doesn’t take long. This is a 10-15 minute discussion every day. And believe it or not, that brief stand-up meeting can sometimes remove an hour-long meeting later on in the day. So it’s super important that you have that prioritization, visibility, importance, urgency, and ease.
The other thing you want to do is figure out ways to bring in that incoming work, and Shawn is going to talk about how you can do that with software.
Shawn: Chris, love your description of the Kanban board; I’m a huge believer in that. That’s how we manage my team, as well. An important element of prioritizing all of those tasks is your initial request process.
Workfront smoothes out a mangled request process because it creates a single dynamic request view for all the work to be done; both planned and ad hoc. This form that you’re looking at right now is dynamic, so it only serves up the questions and the content that are related to the type of request being submitted. You don’t have questions about B roll if you just want to get a Marketo campaign out the door.
We have customers who manage thousands of requests each year with this process, and that’s certainly how my team manages our work as well. So another dimension to consider there on the prioritization process.
This leads me to our second tip, Create Automated Workflows, but we’ll save that for the second blog post in this series. Watch for it next Wednesday! Or watch the complete webcast below.
