[ARTICLE] Monsta X Pushes Against Boundaries in ALL ABOUT LUV, K-Pop's First All-English Album in a Decade

The members of K-pop group Monsta X entered the interview room as though it were the set of a music video: fully hair-and-makeup-ready, some wearing clothes identical to the attire they wore in the video for one of their latest releases, “Middle of the Night.” Kihyun donned a checkered coat with bright yellow stripes and a green collar, Minhyuk a light brown coat with a dark tiger print. The group had just completed a Q&A on Facebook Live, after more than a week of non-stop interviews and meet-and-greets on both coasts of the U.S. The frenetic pace was par for the course for a K-pop act promoting a new album, though in this case, the group from South Korea had just released something a bit different: its first all-English album, ALL ABOUT LUV.

ALL ABOUT LUV is the first all-English album released by a K-pop group in more than a decade — the last one was from trio JYJ in 2010. The new album quickly accomplished an impressive feat, ranking fifth on the Billboard 200 albums chart, making Monsta X only the third K-pop group, after BTS and SuperM, to break the top 10. Members Shownu, Minhyuk, Kihyun, Hyungwon, Joohoney, I.M and Wonho — who left the group near the end of last year — participated in the recording of the album, whose 11 tracks are uncharacteristically sensual and seductive for a K-pop act. A few days after the release, five of the six members of Monsta X sat down with TIME to discuss, at times via a translator, ALL ABOUT LUV, and the experience of both singing in English and speaking more frankly about what happens in the bedroom. (Rapper Joohoney is on a break, taking time to focus on his mental health due to anxiety, but will return for the group’s North American tour beginning in June.)

In the nearly five years since the group was formed in the reality competition show No.Mercy in 2015, Monsta X has carved a space in K-pop with EDM- and hip hop-heavy tracks paired with aggressive choreography. In 2019, the act began to shift gears in its sound. While continuing to release Korean albums with the same explosive energy, Monsta X dropped a number of tracks recorded in English, with a sleeker, smoother vibe. The rollout of these English-language songs led up to the release of ALL ABOUT LUV, which dropped on Valentine’s Day to the warm embrace of “Monbebes” — the name for the group’s fans, derived from the French term for “my baby.”

A new language introduces a new mode of expression

The group began working on ALL ABOUT LUV back in 2018, when they recorded “Besides U” featuring Pitbull, though “Who Do U Love?,” a collaboration with French Montana, would be the album’s first single. “At that time it was really difficult to record,” Kihyun, the main vocalist whose honeyed falsetto is a standout in the new album, tells TIME of working in English. “But it’s really comfortable now, every song.” A combination of speaking more English during stateside events, covering American pop songs — such as Bruno Mars’ “Versace on the Floor,” performed on a Korean television show in 2018 — and receiving help from youngest member I.M, who has lived in Boston and is fluent, has gradually increased the artists’ comfort working in the language.

Releasing an English album doesn’t just mean the words sound different. Vocalist Minhyuk describes a more technical difference in singing the two languages, which can lead to increased expressiveness. “When you speak Korean, there are lots of words that if you pronounce that word, your mouth is closed and it’s not really that smooth — it can sound a bit intense,” he says. “But when you are speaking English words, it goes with the flow. Word and word connects.” Minhyuk says the more flexible pronunciation helps him “give more emotions” to the English words. This can be heard, for instance, as he tenderly delivers the line, “I only feel alive when I don’t feel safe” from the new track “Misbehave.”

A laid-back, gentler approach to choreography

The emotions expressed in the new album, and the dances that accompany the songs, also mark a change from those of Monsta X’s past tracks. The group’s Korean music is known for its intensity — the latest title tracks “Follow” and “Alligator” are EDM-infused anthems whose choreography features fast-paced stomps, kicks and punches. In contrast, the numbers on ALL ABOUT LUV, as the album’s name suggests, share a laid-back mood expressed by soft and fluid dance moves. The performance for the new song “Middle of the Night” is filled with hip swaying, finger snapping and caressing of the microphone stand.

“In ALL ABOUT LUV, the whole album vibe is very moody and chill,” says leader Shownu, who is also the main dancer and has participated heavily in the group’s choreography. “We just wanted to match the dance moves with the songs.” The members contributed to shaping the routines of the new tracks. Shownu points to “Middle of the Night”: at the line, “we’re kissing in the car underneath of the night,” the idols tilt their microphone stands sideways and lean down as if to kiss them.

“Our Korean album performance and our ‘Middle of the Night’ performance are different types of sexy,” Minhyuk explains. “Korean album is…” he pauses as rapper I.M jumps in — “strong sexy.” “Yeah, strong and powerful,” Minhyuk agrees. Meanwhile, “Middle of the Night” has a “gentle” type of sexiness, Kihyun says.

‘Honest things happen on the bed’

But the sex appeal doesn’t only stem from the choreography. Throughout the album, lyrics making sexual references carry Monsta X into a beyond-PG-13, but not-quite-R-rated realm to which few K-pop acts have ventured.

In the track “Misbehave,” the chorus goes, “Love it when we mess this up, every time we argue, straight into the bedroom.” When asked about these lyrics, I.M says, “When you are loving somebody you need to be honest, and honest things happen on the bed.”

“What?!” Kihyun exclaims. “B-E-D? B-E-D?” Minhyuk asks, spelling out the word. “It’s about your imagination,” I.M responds, offering a laundry list of chaste activities. “We can just sleep, or just yawn…”

“Watch Netflix on bed,” vocalist Hyungwon, who has been mostly quiet up until now, chimes in. “Yeah, everyone has their own time on their bed,” I.M says. Kihyun fans himself. “Whew, I’m sweating!”

“Using the straightforward words, I thought it was very erotic,” Shownu says, using the Korean word yahada, which is also sometimes translated as “sexual.” “I felt shy,” Minhyuk shares about his recording experience.

Minhyuk reflected on the lyrics of “Love U,” a cheery electro-pop track suggestive of something more physical. The members sing, “I really, really wanna love you / But I can’t say the word I want to / ‘Cause they won’t play it on the radio / But I know you know / What I mean, what I mean.” It’s not hard to guess the word the lyrics suggest.

“When we were recording ‘Love U,’ I thought it was just a song about love,” Minhyuk explains. “But it went in a different direction.”

To be clear, the lyrics in All ABOUT LUV never explicitly mention sex. But compared to previous tracks in Monsta X’s discography — and, on a broader scale, most love songs across K-pop — the words are significantly more sexual. “It’s fine, we’re all adults.” Kihyun says, “and this is an American album.” If it were a Korean album, there would “maybe” be fewer of these references, he says. “The Korean society is more strict to lyrics.”

Pioneering a new sound

While the majority of K-pop tracks have a balanced distribution between singing and rapping — as most idol groups are formed with a mix of singers and rappers — ALL ABOUT LUV has significantly fewer rap verses. I.M and the group’s main rapper Joohoney, who boast some of the most dynamic rap delivery in the industry, tabled that specialty to record vocal-heavy sections. “I think I forgot how to rap by now,” I.M jokes.

“It was so funny,” Kihyun shares about Joohoney’s time in the studio. “Joohoney yelled at me, ‘Hyung, help me! I can’t do this,’” Kihyun says, referencing the Korean term for “older brother.” “The notes were so high to Joohoney, but he did it.” Indeed, Joohoney and I.M displayed their versatility across the album’s melodies, from the ad-libs in “Who Do U Love?” to the sultry introduction in “Middle of the Night.” In blurring the rap-vocal divide, the group is pioneering a new sound for Korean groups releasing music in the U.S.

“The Korean fans liked it because they saw a feeling they had never seen,” Hyungwon says. “The American fans liked it because it was fully in English.” Music from the album is already making its way into spaces where K-pop is rarely heard. On a recent episode of Riverdale, “Who Do U Love?” plays in the background. Elsewhere, fans have recorded hearing ALL ABOUT LUV tracks in stores from an H&M in Turkey to a Hollister in the U.K. When the group announced its North American tour taking place this summer, it became clear that Monsta X is returning to cities in venues much larger than the ones they performed in just a year ago, a testament to their rapid growth.

A few days before the Billboard 200 list was announced, TIME asked Monsta X how they will measure the success of ALL ABOUT LUV. Leader Shownu says he does not want to “get stuck inside of ‘success,’” and his teammate Kihyun offers a simple but emphatic response: “If we and our fans are satisfied with this album, that is good.”

CONTENT — Trials Of Black Love, Adultery, Broken Vows and Marriage, Humiliation and Manipulation

PLOT — Based off of the song, “Not Gon Cry” by Mary J. Blige on her Share My World album. This is strictly based off of the lyrics, but a little twist. In addition, I STRONGLY suggest listening to this song on REPLAY while reading to get further feels, but hey..

NARRATIVE — “T’Challa stop.” You giggled, as the King of Wakanda continued to poke at your waist as you finished scrambling the eggs in a frying pan.

Pausing, “If you would please get the children and wash them up for breakfast that would extremely helpful.” You suggested, as you briefly turned yourself to look him up into his eyes.

Holding his hands up in playful defense he backed out of the kitchen as he went to get the kids.

It had been seventy-two hours since T’Challa had read your daughter a bedtime story and ever since then, the King of Wakanda has devoted his time in being an active participant in your daily routine.

From having his guards, Okoye and Ayo bring you food from the market to assisting you throughout the day to even watching the kids when you went to visit Gorilla City to discuss your separation.

The man was like a bee chasing honey as he was there for your every beck and call. He was becoming an important aspect of your life as you two started to bond and spend quality time with eachother over the course of the past two days.

You never would have thought that the man who defeated your ex-husband at Warrior Falls would have you cheesing like a kid and candy store. You could still recall the first time you meet T’Challa at the annual Spring Festival in the royal garden.

Hired as an international publicist for Wakanda after moving over from America and meeting M’Baku. You could actively remember the rise and fall of the dip in his walk as he approached you to introduce himself.

Hearing the footsteps of your little ones jogging down the hallway, you snapped out of your daydream just in time as you felt the familiar body press against your legs.

“—Goodmorning, umama!” You heard Zuko exclaim, as he smiled brightly at you while he squeezed you.

Turning off the stove you abruptly dropped to your knees before returning the hug as you took it a step further and showed your motherly affection as you showered kisses all over his cocoa complexion.

“Ugh, umama.” He groaned, as he desperately tried to break out of your arms. Giggling at his antics you released your hold and stood back up and started fixing your children’s plates.

Picking up two plates from the counter you turned your abdominal to move until abruptly felt another body brush up against yours. Already knowing who it was you cocked your head back spotting T’Challa as the corners of his mouth were turned upward as he came up behind you grabbing two more plates.

Feeling a smile toy against your lips you sucked your lips inside in a attempt to keep the grin from forming.

“Kids! Y’all need to eat up, you guys already know that I’m dropping you all at your utata’s house and I need y’all to go there with full belly’s.”

“Anyways, when I do leave y’all with your utata I need y’all to be on your best behavior meaning absolutely no back talk, Mandla. Don’t think that doesn’t go for y’all two, Cebisa and Zuko.” You pointed out, with a stern look before you replacing it with a gentle one.

Coming up behind you once more you felt a heated breath blow against your ear as it spoke, “Lighten up on them.” T’Challa whispered, before lightly grazing your forearm with his thumb as he placed the last plate on the table.

Feeling your intake of oxygen hitch in your pharynx at the sudden touch of devotion, you tried to play it off by closing your mouth and allowing goosebumps to cascade over your smooth chestnut pigmentation.

Letting the light quiver rattle throughout your body, you briefly closed your eyelids while you attempted to conceal your rapid wavelengths of emotions.

It was pitiful watching your sensitive behavior flip whenever he came around. Feeling another viewer look on your shook state you whirled your head only to spot Zuko staring up at you with a grin full of bread crumbs.

Playfully rolling your eyes, you took a seat infront of the plate with a generous portion of food and started digging in after praying. Hearing the smacking of lips as you ate you instinctively darted your eyes over at Mandla getting ready to chew him out when you saw him chewing with his mouth closed. That was when your ears led you to someone much closer as you turned your head to the left spotting T’Challa smacking on his pieces of bacon.

“Is my food that good to the King of Wakanda?” You asked, with your vocal cords laced thick in sarcasm.

Flicking his head up, a closed smile graced his lips as he heard your question before he scanned over your witty expression.

Taking a sip of his apple juice he swallowed his food, “I must compliment you on your cooking. This is one of the best dishes I have had in my entire existence, I must have more.” He teased.

As you collected your children’s empty plates along with his and yours you briefly paused, “I don’t think Queen Mother and your kitchen staff will agree with your statement, but thank you.” You smirked, before throwing a comical look over your shoulder at him as you walked deeper into the kitchen.

“T’Challa can you make sure the kids are packed or are you leaving right now?” You asked, as you bent down putting the dirty dishes in the dishwasher.

“I guess I can hang around for a few more minutes since your asking me so nicely, mnandi.” He replied.

Huffing out in irritation you stood back up seeing the kitchen table clear of your children and T’Challa indicating he followed your request.

Instead of worrying about your kids you made yourself busy as you sprayed and sanitized the table and swept the floor. By the time you were tossing the dirt in the trash can you heard the timid footsteps of your children as they walked around the corner with looks of grief and misery. Mandla held a combative appearance while Zuko had an optimistic look and Cebisa had a melancholy expression with tears pooling up in your eyes.

Your baby girl was going through it the hardest.

Scurrying towards her you swiftly got on your knees as you pulled her in a tight grip once you threw your arms around her miniature frame. Hearing her weak sniffle was all it took before she started to soak your mauve colored strap dress. Rocking her in a soothing manner in hopes of ceasing her blaring cries failed as it amplified and started to hurt your eardrums from her wails. “—lemme give it a try.” The masculine voice suggested.

Peeking your head up you saw T’Challa standing next to you as he stared at you with optimistic eyes.

Sighing you nodded before pulling your arms away from your daughter and stood up only for your spot to be fulfilled by the King of Wakanda.

“What’s the matter, mnandi?” He questioned, as he sat on his knees looking at Cebisa in the eyes.

“I-I don’t want to leave my umama.” She hiccuped, as tears kept flowing. Exhaling in grief T’Challa wiped her tears in a similar motion from the night when you were crying in the kitchen a few days ago. “It’s going to be okay Cebisa, these few days are gonna pass by like this.” He reassured, with the emphasized on the quickness of time with a snap of his finger.

With her tears halting as she blinked up at him with wide eyes she said, “Really? Then I get to come back to umama?” She asked, in great astonishment.

“—then you get to come back to umama.” T’Challa repeated, with a grin before swiftly tickling her sides making her infectious laugh echo through the home.

“So, your gonna be a big girl for your umama?” He asked, before momentarily turning his head as his eyes meet yours. “Yes!” She exclaimed, before she excitedly jumped up and down with joy. Gleaming at the sight of your cheerful baby girl you clasped your hands together, “Whew, now that, that’s settled it is time for us to hit the road children.” You announced, catching their attention as you slid on a fur coat over your shoulders and the thick scarf around your neck.

Soon enough you were standing outside watching your offspring’s bags being placed in the vehicle by no one other than T’Challa, himself. If he was gonna be around why not put him to use, you shrugged.

“Thank you for everything T’Challa. Kids!” You called out, gaining their attention once more. “Tell T’Challa your farewells now, we must be in Gorilla City before three.” You stated, before you watched your three kids embrace the King of Wakanda individually.

Last to pull away Mandla helped strap in his younger siblings in before he slid into his own seat doing the same. Shutting the door to the car T’Challa stared at you watching you fan your face dramatically with the use of your hand. “—aren’t you gonna say goodbye to your King?” He taunted, making your face compress.

Chuckling at your translated face T’Challa said, “You know I’m just joking around.” as he smiled. Smacking your lips you sauntered towards him before briefly wrapping his arms around his warm figure.

His scent of faithfulness, ginger and serenity invaded your nostrils as your face hastily pressed against his handwoven dashiki. He damn near made your knees weak as his scent traveled throughout you from your beating heart to your frontal lobe and your dripping hole. You couldn’t help but fall for his genuine charisma and presence; it was pathetic.

You haven’t felt this way since you were eighteen years old and had a bulky man towering over you as he whispered sweet nothings into your ear instead of barking at fellow warriors. Boy, did the times change.

Detaching yourself from him to prevent further hardening of your nipples, you took a step back.

“—This is a see you later hug.” He affirmed. “When are you coming back?” He questioned, as he leaned his arm against the car.

“Hopefully before five.” You replied, before T’Challa nodded his head. “Alright, well I’ll see you tonight.” He stated, before taking a step closer to you.

Breaking your personal space he swiftly planted a tender kiss on your cheek; the one actors in French movies would do when greeting and bidding farewell to a close friend or relative. Conflicted on his actions again you decided not to press the issue and got into the car and prayed that your children didn’t see your goodbye with T’Challa and start up another question and answer session. Hearing them chatter amongst themselves you thanked the heavens above before feeling the vehicle startup as the journey back to Gorilla City begun.

Minutes have passed since the ride back up to the Jabariland began. Currently hugging your children goodbye as you stood infront of the palace foyer you kissed them on their heads before leaving them with a warm hug and words. “Be good to your utata.” You declared, before you raised up to your natural height.

Standing up getting ready to pivot you heard a grumbling voice called out to you, “Hold up Y/N!”.

Inhaling a deep breath you knew who it belonged to as you were keen to that voice for many years. “What is it M’Baku?” You asked, as your voice strained from the morning, but defensive just in case he wanted to be on some bullshit.

“Can I just talk to you?” He pleaded.

“What could you possibly say to me that you didn’t the past six months? Better yet, what could you say that didn’t shout in our meeting with the council?” You grilled, your defensive tone already on lock.

Your words disintegrating his hard facade he took a deep breath before opening his mouth, “Would you just have a word with me, please? There will be no elders and no advisors just us.” He promised.

Bringing your hand up to your head you massaged your temple with your fingers before nodding. “Ok.” You agreed, as you followed him to his throne room.

M’Baku opened the wooden door as you walked in before standing in the middle of the room with your arms crossed. “Will you not have a seat?” He asked, with his arm stretched out towards the empty chairs.

“I don’t plan on being here long.” You snarled.

Huffing, “Very well then, the reason I called you in here is to tell you that I have thought long and hard about your demand for alimony and basically cutting to the chase I’m going to pay the full amount.”

Not containing the smug look on your face a grin broke out on your face as you felt the stress evade from the good news. “If you don’t mind me asking what got through to your thick skull?” You inquired.

“Eh, just came to my senses.” He shrugged.

Deciding not to press the issue you took that answer and left Gorilla City before arriving back to the heart of the country. Returning back to your home the sun was starting to set indicating that you made it back to your house just in time.

Unlocking your door you tossed your belongings down on the counter before you throwing the furs on the couch revealing your two strap dress before you plopped down next to it.

However, your tranquility didn’t last soon as you heard the ringing of your doorbell. Mumbling out curses underneath your breath you abruptly yanked opened the door, “What?!” You shouted out, as your patience wore thin. Your face dropping as you gazed at a coolheaded T’Challa who screwed his face up at your livid outburst. “Bad timing, because I can come back tomorrow or the day after.” He suggested, with his thumb gesturing back towards the path he came.

Giggling at his fumbling with words, “—No, no your fine.” You said, before you walked back towards your living room. Locking the door behind him, the King of Wakanda trailed behind you to the living room.

Watching your slumped body on the couch T’Challa spoke up, “Long day?” He asked. Before you could respond your stomach decided to make it’s debut once it started growl lowly.

His laughter dying down from your tummy he said, “—Do you want me to cook you something?”

Mumbling out in appreciation you dug your head further into the couch pillows in attempt to catch some shut-eye.

In the meantime, T’Challa was standing in your kitchen shifting throughout your cabinets as he searched for what to feed your grumbling belly.

Within an hour, you felt soft nudges on your shoulder causing you to turn away in attempt to continue your nap. Hearing a familiar laugh you heard T’Challa say, “Y/N dinner is ready.” as he pushed his palms against your other shoulder in attempt to break you out of your sleepy trance.

Moaning out as you flicked your eyelids opened, you mumbled out, “Okay.” as you stood up and stretched out your aching back. “C’mon now.” T’Challa said, as he was in the kitchen placing spaghetti onto a plate before he placed slices of garlic bread on the side.

Standing back watching the masculine man flow through your kitchen with a delicate touch sent your nerves everywhere and liquid dripping in your core.

You had to get a grip on your hormones, but seeing as though you haven’t had a good dick appointment in a months due to the Great Gorilla’s busy schedule you couldn’t help but succumb to his appearance.

Exhaling your tempting thoughts and sensitive hormones away you decided it would be best to indulge in the spicy aroma. “—Where did you learn how to cook like this? It’s delicious.” You raved, as your jaws were still full of the cooked noodles.

Chuckling at your behavior T’Challa spoke, “Queen Mother is an excellent teacher.” before bringing his food up to his plump lips. Swallowing your food you nodded at his answer, “Well someday your gonna have to show me what else you can cook.” You smirked, before taking a sip of water.

“The same goes for here, your gonna have to cook for me as well because don’t act like you can’t throw down in the kitchen.” He said, before slightly hitting your forearm with his elbow.

Only giggling in response the rest of the dinner was filled with small talk. Soon enough once it was over you two placed the dishes in the dishwasher before heading over to the living room. Flopping down on the couch you made yourself comfortable as you turned on the television.

Sitting next to you T’Challa spoke up, “How are things going with you an M’Baku?” He asked, as he watched the lights on the television reflect on your content face.

A smile spreading across your face you said, “I didn’t tell you, he agreed to pay the alimony.” You informed, as your smile got wider if it was even possible.

Grinning at your shift in attitude T’Challa hugged you as you did the same. “That’s great.” He said, as he slowly pulled away but still embracing you as your arms were still clutching onto one another’s.

Licking your lips, “Yea, it means I’m one step closer to being official separated.” You grinned, before you gradually started feeling the butterflies from this morning reappear even stronger.

His stares only intensified as you continued to talk about the joys of finally being free. Your words soon fell on deaf ears as T’Challa gaze got trapped in your beauty as his eyes observed every inch of your face from your thick perfectly arched eyebrows, buttery skin and eventually onto your thick set of lips.

Tired of being avoided from his prominent stares you glared at him before you spat out, “—Your not even paying attention, so imma shut up since my your obviously distracted.” before rolling your eyes.

“What is it? Is there something on my face?” You grumbled out, as you carelessly touched your face.

“No, no your just very gorgeous Y/N.” T’Challa said, as he took ahold of your hand that was against your face. Squeezing it gently, T’Challa swiftly leaned into your personal space and pressed a soft kiss on your lips. Temporarily taking away your natural function to get oxygen to your lungs for a second as your breath hitched before you mocked his actions.

This kiss wasn’t just no peck or some basic kiss a couple did when they were in a rush, oh hell no. His kiss was like syrup on a hot plate of fresh pancakes. His kiss was like cashing a check at the bank, like a colorful sky during the sunset setting in the horizon.

Yep, his kiss was all that and a bag of chips.

Once you pressed against his moist lips he hummed out in great pleasure at the contact. Wanting to taste the cherry scented chapstick on your lips, the King of Wakanda took the lead as he took the kiss one step further as you abruptly felt his slick tongue slide in your mouth as your head moved in sync with him.

The man was making your damn knees weak again only with the touch of his tongue. Shaking off your explicit thoughts you snapped back into reality and continued bumping tonsils with the heavily scented man sitting before you.

Suddenly feeling his finger fumble around with the bottom of your dress touching your knees he slowly lifted up the material.

Instantly rolling your pelvic from the gesture your best friend between your legs enjoyed the sensation of the pressure against it before you opened up your eyes. “Your an eager one aren’t you, usana.” T’Challa whispered, before he boldly reached under the dress.

His finger searching for the material crossing your hipbone stopped as the touch was missing; you weren’t wearing any panties.

Winking up at him you flashed him an enticing look before he reflected the same look before he roughly slid your dress up towards your pelvic bone. Biting his lip he dropped his eyes to take a peek at your bare pussy before he swiftly dropped down.

☑ The album as a whole

It’s a very deep and heavy album. And yet as I was writing it, I feel like I just wanted to look on the bright side. Each song is so heavy, so deep, but then I pull myself together… I was able to do all the things I wanted to do: “Smooch!” is the sort of song I only would’ve been able to pull off right now, there’s lyrics I wrote more politely, and I feel like there’s a lot of ‘brand new aiko’ on it. It’s like the different parts of aiko that used to be on the right and the left and in the middle before are all one now. There were moments on the day I debuted where I braced myself for the good and the bad. I thought, “This is all I have.” Writing my 6th album sort of made me realize I’d forgotten how that felt. I almost feel as if I’ve had to accept that about myself all over again. Whether it’s a sad song, a happy song, or a heartbreaking song, in the end I just write about whatever compels me at the time. I hope you can tell.

☑ Aoi Hikari (Blue Light)

Once I finished this song I was like, “This album’s gonna be alright. I can do this.” I finished it sometime in October or September last year. It was between that and “Mikuni Eki” for a single. I ended up putting it on this album instead because I really, really wanted it to be the first track representing the whole thing. It honestly just popped into my head all at once when I wrote it. The chorus came to me first, then I added the first and second verses, and then the bridge. The melody of the second verse is pretty crucial. In the lyrics I was able to write about things I’d been thinking about but couldn’t put into wordsーlike, I was able to express the painful, innocent parts of me, the ones that are very, very precious to me. I’m really happy about that. It’s also one of the few songs where I use the masculine pronoun ‘boku’. I normally use the pronoun ‘watashi’, but when I use ‘boku’ every now and then I find that I can be a lot more honest. I think using the word ‘boku’ helped me find the words I’d been searching and searching for all this time. Of all the songs I’ve written so far, this song has a very wide, open image to it. It always makes me feel like I’m floating high in the sky, personally. That’s why I gave it that title.

☑ Koibito Doushi (Couples)

Working on this song was quite the struggle for the musicians because of the weird time signature, but it’s a lot of fun for me to sing. The song goes in every directionーit goes here and thereーand when I was singing it, I was like, “Okay, next I’m going to sing it like THIS!” The tempo never changes; it just sounds like it is because of the arrangement, which I find interesting. The way the musicians perform it and the way they change the rhythm makes it sound like the tempo is changing, but it’s all the same tempo. Singing those parts is a lot of fun, too. I have a lot of songs where there’s a bunch of string players performing. There weren’t very many people in this song, though, which is a good thing when you listen to it. The violins in this song make it nice and lively. Although guys might listen to this song and say, “I don’t get girls!”, when I wrote the song I was thinking the oppositeーmaybe the things we think about are pure and straightforward.

☑ Energy

This one’s a rock song. On this album I communicate through nuancesーwell, I do all kinds of things, like getting my point across with the vibe rather than the melody. Like on this song. Once I get into the second half I’m singing with a big ‘Oh, I see!’ grin on my face. There’s also a section halfway through the song, at the chorus, where the guitars start playing ska. I played it on my piano as ska in the original demo tape for the song, and they picked up on that when they did the arrangement. That makes it aiko’s one and only novice ‘ska’ song. Or I guess, ska-like song? (laughs) It’s a mutual love song, but also the first song in a while where I’m telling them what to do. You see it pop up in the lyrics: “Do this, do that.”

☑ Ashita mo Itsumodoori ni (The Same as Always Again Tomorrow)

This one’s a medium-tempo ballad. I feel a lot of regret in the lyrics. No matter how many times I experience love, I never seem to learn anything from it, you know? I understand but always end being unprepared for it, and because of that I think of every single person as a once-in-a-lifetime romance. I took those feelings and wrote about them in the lyrics. Somebody told me, “As big as the world may be, I think you may be the first singer in the J-POP world to ever use the words ‘leaky faucet’ in your lyrics.” (laughs) I think the ordinary things in life are the ones that pull at your heartstrings the most. All it takes is something small and insignificant like a leaky faucet to open the floodgates for me, you know? I suddenly just felt SO sad and then wrote this song. I personally love triplets as a rhythm because they feel so good to sing. I really belted this one out though. Likeーand I mean this in a very positive wayーI sang this song with a lot more fullness than I usually do. Writing this song was like, “Whew, I need to take a little break after singing so passionately!”

☑ Kaban (Bag)

Wow, this really takes me back. I hadn’t ever written a song like it at the time so to this day, I’m really glad I wrote it. I’m not sure when I’ll encounter another song quite like this again. I’m really glad I was able to write it when I did.

☑ Koi no Namida (Tears of Love)

I love the pizzicato in the beginning. They worked so hard in it. At first they told me it might be a bit difficult to make the phrase pizzicato when it reappears. But they made it happen, which I’m very happy about. This song was more of a medium tempo in the actual demo tape, but I was like, “Hey, why not bring the tempo up a bit?” and it gave the song a bit of a rock feel. The melody’s really cute when you listen to it by itself. We decided to go with the approach of making it more of a rock song instead of piling on the cute. Because of that, I feel like this song changed the most from the demo stage. The lyrics are about getting dumped but in the song, the girl still hasn’t given up hope that they’ll get back together. When I finished the melody it felt like I’d come full circle. It almost feels like something I would’ve written a long time ago. I really feel like I came up with an honest, straightforward melody here. A little bit ago I probably would’ve added in some ad-libbing or something like that. I think I’ve sorta come full circle just playing the melody straight, as-is.

☑ Vidro no Yoru (Night of Glass)

The word ‘vidro (’glass’ in Italian)’ has such a lonely vibe to it, don’t you think? It sounds like you’re all by yourself. That’s the image I had in mind when I wrote it, even though it’s got a rock sound to it. Osada [Susumu] arranged this song for me. Isn’t he just amazing? The guitars stand out in this song which made it a little bit hard to like, find a balance within the flow of the album for it, but I think it really ties the whole thing together. I was actually stuck trying to decide whether to make “Kotori Kouen” or “Vidro” the B-side to “Mikuni Eki”. I thought “Vidro” had a more solid, lingering afterimage to it though, so I held onto it with the hope of including it on something else. I decided to put it on this album because of its flow. I was really glad to see Mr. Osada get caught up in the lyrics while we were recording, too. He seemed to really enjoy the “Whether you can really hear the sound of my heart wearing thin” part. “I’m always surrounded by old guys. If they ever ask me why I listen to your music, aiko, I’ll tell ‘em: THIS!” he said, then he went home. (laughs) I always say, “Thank you so much for that very normal reaction!” Deep down, that made me super happy thoughーI was ecstatic!

☑ Ai no Shigusa (Acts of Love)

The way I pumped this one out, it was kinda like it’d possessed me. I usually write a chorus first, then go home and write the rest cooped up at my place. But this one I finished writing in no time at the studio. The lyrics are worded a little bit more politely―a bit of distance has formed between me and the person I like, so I’m being extra polite to them on purpose to get them to notice me. There’s almost like, a despicableness to it. (laughs) Or like, a meanness to it I guess. I do that sometimes. If I get into a fight with someone I’m friends with, I’ll change my tone and start speaking super politely to them. I do it to get them to realize just how mad they made me. Some people don’t, though. (laughs) I really like the way the rhythm changes like, halfway through the song. And I love some of the ballads I came up with on this album even though they’re really heavy.

☑ Zutto Chikaku ni (Forever Close)

I wrote this one 2 or 3 years ago. It’s got a jazzy arrangement to it. We mixed it so that it felt small in scaleーto make it sound like everything is really close. We did the horn section for cheap because there weren’t very many of them, too. That also gives it a really nice vibe, I think. I really love this song. It’s finally on a CD now. This one’s in three-four time too. I really must love three-four time, huh? This is the first time I’ve ever ad-libbed with horns in the back. So like… a collaboration? (laughs) It just feels nice. This is a song I’d really like to do live sometime on a small scale. I’d like that someday. The lyrics make me imagine a dried-up riverbed. I wrote them 2 or 3 years ago but wrote the second chorus recently after being reminded of the same exact feelings I was having then. It brought back so many memories for me.

☑ Smooch!

“Smooch!” refers to the sound you make when you kiss. It’s been a while since I had a title in English, hasn’t it? I named the song “feed us” after a sticker that just happened to catch my eye when I wrote it and put it on the demo tape. Once we’d recorded the vocals and finished up everything including the arrangement, I decided that because that sticker was what inspired me, I ought to make the title in English too. And “Smooch!” was what I found. The first line of this song has a lot of impact, I think. That was what was on the demo tape I made at home. I thought for sure they wouldn’t like it when I brought it with me [to the studio], but they seemed to think it was neat. I was like, “Okiedokie then!” (laughs) I was so excited when I finished the melody, I just wanted to record it as soon as possible! They managed to arrange it exactly the way I wanted it too, so I’m really glad I wrote this song, and that I finished it when I did. Oh, and I’m the one doing the whistling at the end. I’m totally hopeless at it though. (laughs) I actually forgot we’d added in the whistling and was like, “There’s some kind of weird noise in the song.” So then I said, “Um, excuse me…” and found out it was me. Kinda feels like I want you guys to check out how bad my whistling is. (laughs)

☑ Hanakaze (Flower Wind)

Oh man, I had tons of opportunities to sing this song on TV at the end of year, like on “Kouhaku”. The people in the audience come to see all the different artists during specials… and then there was my fans, shouting, “aiko, we’re over here!” when I sang “Hana Kaze”. It was really encouraging. I remember thinking to myself, “I’m nervous, but I’m going to give it my best shot,” and just singing with everything I had in me. We did a lot of things with this song: it was a baseball theme song, and we shot 2 music videos for it too. I feel like I’ve been wanting to look on the bright side ever since, and that I was able to create this album because that feeling took root then. And of course, that positivity really comes through in this song.

☑ Mikuni Eki (Mikuni Station)

Writing this song and releasing it as a single makes me sort of excited to go back home to Mikuni, now. It’s become an even more sacred place for me. It’s like I made my own song commemorating it. I really makes me feel like I got to reflect on all the things that’ve happened, with the friends I made when I was just a student, people who have supported me. Apparently people in Kansai are like, “Why Mikuni?” It’s that much of a local thing. So why Mikuni of all place? Well, because towns like those shine so bright to me.

☑ Hoshi Monogatari (Star Story)

With this song, I was able to express the kind of person I am now. It’s genuinely who i am nowーI mean, like, I really want to be the kind of person who goes home after recording and still is super positive even though I’m beat. But I think that is who I am now. I do fun stuff, and I’m recording music, so even when I’m tired I’m always looking on the bright side. I think that’s important. I feel like the person I am now really comes through in this song. When I get home to my apartment building and into my room, the moon’s always super bright in the sky somewhere over here, right around the time I get off the elevator and walk down the hallway. I look at it and go, “Ah, the weather was nice today, wonder what it’s gonna be like tomorrow.” And then I look at the stars and go, “Ah, it’s almost (month) so this star won’t be up there anymore.” I look at them for a moment and just have a nice, relaxing moment to myself. It’s just for a few seconds, three or so. This song came to be by doing that every single day. The apartment building I’m living in right now, and the things I think and feel in the rhythm of my daily life became a song. And it’s got the perfect sound. It’s exactly what I wanted. It used to just be the first half, actually. I added another verse A to it because I wanted to make just a little bit bigger, and then it was the absolutely perfect size for the version of myself depicted in the song. This song really only could’ve come together right at this moment in time.

Song Of The Week 19.01.07.

welcome!!~

first off, i’m really sorry about not posting last week, life got busy and i couldn’t find the time. good way to start off the new year, i know. i promise i’ll be good about posting from now on, as i’m going back to school and will (hopefully) be able to keep myself on a tighter schedule.

alright that’s over with! this week’s song is “Hoodie Season” by 3RACHA!

(if you were unaware, 3RACHA is a predebut subunit of skz consisting of Bang Chan, Han (jisung), and Changbin. i might make a more in depth post later on, and if i do i’ll link it here!)

UghuUGUHUHUGUhuhuH where do i start.

this very well may be my favorite 3racha song, right next to “Start Line”

first of all, changbin’s rap in the beginning? revolutionary. his voice sounds a little bit softer than usual, but that might just be me hearing things. either way, his flow never fails to impress me, and i think his diction goes perfectly with the tone of the song.

second? 2 words. j i s u n g ‘ s v o c a l s.

his voice is heavenly omg. we don’t hear a lot of jisung’s singing voice, especially not like this. it sounds gentle, cool, and relaxed, and it is literally like honey in combination with the flow of the song. it’s also nice to hear the contrast, because he sings the chorus as well as rapping his own verse, which i thought was a genius choice. this song is so soft, it matches beautifully with this side of jisung. and i have never been more bias wrecked in my life.

third? my man bang chan coming through with his sing-rapping that we all know and love. as well as his angelic voice singing “hey baby i’ll make you my lover” and basically professing his love and frustrations to his “baby” before saying “i was talking bout my hoodie” THE ULTIMATE POWER MOVE. Y’ALL THOUGHT MY MANS WAS IN LOVE?? IN LOVE WITH COMFORTABLE FASHION DAMN STRAIGHT

all jokes aside, this song is also lyrically one of my favorites. if you’re like me, and can’t speak korean and are only comprehending the english lyrics, you would think that our boys are talking about being in love n maybe giving their hoodies to their lovers?? after close inspection of the english translations, you’ll find that they’re talking about wearing their hoodies. literally.

at first, i thought, ‘hmp. that’s.....interesting. i mean i wear hoodies all the time, but idk what these fools are on.’ but, i did some thinking, and i settled on the idea that while they’re literally talking about their hoodies, they’re more referring to finding yourself, and feeling comfortable in your own skin.

hear me out, 3racha’s discography as a whole kind of eludes to that weird transition between being a kid and being an adult. jisung was only around 16-17, changbin was about 17-18, and chris was turing 20. they were all trainees, and they all were dealing with having found their passion, but not having any promise that they’d be able to pursue it. it’s feeling of a constant state of flux, which i think anyone from the ages 14-30 can relate to, and maybe that’s why it hits me so hard. their “hoodie” is their identity, they way that they view themselves and project themselves to the world. that’s why changbin talks about wearing it all year round, even if it’s uncomfortable, because wearing it still feels better than taking it off. and now that it’s hoodie season, he finally can wear it comfortably. he’s coming into is own, and he finally is starting to feel comfortable in his own skin, but he knows that it might not last, because his life/ career is just starting. jisung talks about how his hoodie matches the color of the sky, and his friends getting food and hanging out. the sky changes colors, as do the colors of his hoodie. this one’s a little less clear, but i feel that maybe he thinks he has to keep changing the way he portrays himself, to keep up with his friends or those around him, even though it might not be who he really is. him and his friends are on different paths, and he doesn’t know what to make of it. in addition, he feels his youth slipping. as an idol, you are forced to grow up so fast. (remember, jisung was only 16/17 when writing this) he talks about the morning, how the sky is grey, and it feels cold and uncomfortable, maybe this represents the new life he might be taking on soon, and the new “hoodie” he’ll have to put on to match the sky, or the life of being an idol. chris’s verses sound....older? he’s not dealing with exactly the same issues as jisung or changbin, but they are definitely similar. he talks about criticism, and learning to deal with people all wanting different things from you. he’s frustrated, but he isn’t going to give up. he likes his hoodie, and he’s comfortable in it, he’s not going to change because other people are making him feel like he should. i think i like this song so much because it relates directly to all the feelings i’m having, and it’s comforting to know that some of the most talented people i know have felt the same way at some point. even if i was totally off about all of that, i think the core message of the song is learning to be comfortable in your own skin, and finding a hoodie that fits you, knowing that it might not fit later. ugshhs i just love it so much, and chris is a genius.

w o w i went full analysis on that LMAO im sorry, i really love this song, and i really like the meaning that it has (for me, at least).

i am fully aware that i could be totally wrong, and? i think i’m okay with that. this is just what i took from this song. at the end of the day, if you think something totally different, as long as you take something new away from it, i think that’s okay. if you disagree or feel differently, please let me know because i would love to discuss this more, i could talk about this mixtape for hours lmao.
