i'm sorry i have to be a hater for a second. i have never liked a greta gerwig film i've seen. i thought ladybird was just fine, have always hated little women as a story and her version did nothing to alleviate that (not her fault but yk), and it still blows my mind that barbie got a reception other than "this is for 12 year olds" (movies for 12 year olds are good and should exist but they do not deserve oscars)

this has always made me really sad! she is a regularly working, popular woman director. i want to like her stuff! she just seems to be interested in things that i really, really don't like. and it sucks!

so anyway the reason i'm making this post: i just learned she's making a narnia movie.

narnia. a series that i was forced to read in my extensive catholic schooling. a series that made me develop a deep, probably unfair but still seemingly inescapable hatred for c.s. lewis.

WHY

i'm so sad i just want to like her movies

(none of this post is meant to drag her or her movies or anyone who likes them. i don't have anything actually against them or think they're "bad". this is just about how she keeps magically making stuff that is super not to my taste and it's a bummer.)

The Barbie movie reminded me about how when I was little my parents were upset that I kept making my Barbie dolls kiss, so they bought me a Ken doll. The next day they found me having a funeral for poor Ken in the garden, he had died of tuberculosis. All the Barbies were in attendance and I buried him under our rose bush. The Barbies were too poor to afford a headstone (it was 1875) so I didn’t mark where the grave was and I never could find him again. He’s probably still there.

the barbenheimer experience i had was so funny i saw oppenheimer first and in a quiet scene we could literally hear ken singing in the theater next to us and then during barbie it when was quiet we could hear a fucking explosion coming from the oppenheimer screening

The patriarchy really does win because how can Oscar voters nominate Ryan Gosling as Ken but not nominate Margot Robbie as Barbie and Greta Gerwig for directing?

Very happy that America Ferrera got a nomination though, she deserved it!
