WARNING: This fic contains mentions of suicidal thoughts. Please do not read if this will trigger you or make you uncomfortable.
"Thank you for telling me your feelings, Marinette. I'm flattered," Adrien gave her a warm smile, which then vanished as he hesitated to continue. Biting his lip, he struggled to get his next words out. He didn't want to hurt this amazing young woman, his close friend and former classmate. But he had little choice, as he knew she hated liars and he needed to tell her the truth. "But I love someone else."
Marinette's throat was dry. She had a strong inkling that was the case and her instincts were rarely wrong, but it was a whole different story to have it actually confirmed by the man himself. She licked her lips and cleared her throat.
"W-who?" she croaked out. Maybe she shouldn't ask, but she felt she at least wanted to know who he could have fallen for without her noticing. She had watched him so carefully for years and he had treated everyone the same; yet apparently, there was a special someone after all.
Adrien chuckled awkwardly and shifted his weight between his feet. His arm came up as he reached to scratch at the back of his neck in an anxious gesture.
"Um, it's Ladybug," he reluctantly answered. He felt she deserved as much, being that she was a close friend and was always honest with him. He was worried, though, that she would ask further questions, not believe him, or think his love was for shallow reasons.
However, it seemed those particular worries were unwarranted. Instead, something much worse was about to take place.
"Look out!" Adrien cried out and was just about to barrel into her to knock her out the way.
Unfortunately, he was too late. Marinette was already engulfed in purple smoke, having been possessed by one of Hawk Moth's evil butterflies.
The only stroke of luck was that he had seen the object that held the akuma: her earrings.
Marinette reappeared from the smoke in a new form. Her hair was loose and looked like threads used for sewing; different colours throughout her head gave her a very colourful hair style. Her clothes were all patchy and full of stitches; they reminded Adrien of the characters in a Tim Burton movie. And in her hands were two giant sewing needles the size of swords.
Marinette went still as the purple moth frame appeared over her face and allowed Hawk Moth to communicate with her.
Adrien could not hear his voice, so instead he grabbed her shoulders and tried to reason with her. But it was to no avail as she could not hear him over Hawk Moth's voice.
"Yes, Hawk Moth. But first, I must mend my heart by breaking others. Specifically, Adrien Agreste's."
With that, the communicator disappeared and Marinette was ready for action.
In that moment, Marinette raised the needle in her right hand and swung it down with great force, in an effort to hit her target.
Adrien, thankfully, somersaulted out of the way in time with a yelp.
"Stop this, Marinette, this isn't you! This isn't what you would want!" Adrien called out, trying again to reason with her.
"Shut up! My name is Anti-Seamstress! I will be the one unravelling your heart this time!" she barked out angrily, before darting towards him again.
Adrien kept doing his best to dodge, but his civilian self just didn't have the speed and agility that he had in his superhero form. As a result, he knew he needed to get away in order to transform, but was having difficulty finding an opening.
"Marinette, please don't be upset! You're still amazing and any guy would be lucky to have you," he reassured, dancing out of the way of her left-handed attack this time. "I'm just too dumb and loyal to be that guy."
Anti-Seamstress looked hurt for a moment, rather than raging mad.
"Why?" she mumbled, as if to herself.
Adrien was stunned. She seemed to have gained control of herself just now. But the moment was fleeting.
"Why does everyone prefer Ladybug?" she spat, regaining her anger. "Why is she so much better?"
Lashing out again, her weapon missed Adrien's body by a mere thread.
He couldn't directly answer without hurting her or giving away his identity, so he tried comforting her again.
"Don't compare yourself to a superhero! You have so many wonderful qualities and people who love you!"
Her face went livid, as she paused mid-attack.
Straightening herself and walking ominously slow towards Adrien, he could feel goosebumps. It turned out that someone as sweet and helpful as Marinette could be very fierce and intimidating as a villain.
"Oh? You say that... yet you don't love me. You say that and yet I am Ladybug. So I can compare myself all I want and you can stop pretending you love me when you don't even love my real self," she spoke with an eerily calm and even voice. Yet, the venom and sharpness pierced into Adrien's heart even before the needle itself followed through and hit its mark.
Negative feelings impaled him along with the sharp blade. He felt happiness and joy being sapped out of him, while being replaced with every horrible emotion imaginable. Despair, loneliness, anxiety, rage, rejection, inadequacy, worthlessness; all of these and more overtook every fibre of his being.
And a voice filled his mind with hurtful words: Ladybug will never love you. Your father doesn't love you. Your friends deserve better than you. You're useless. Nobody wants you around. You don't deserve to live. The world would be better off without you.
Adrien broke as these types of thoughts trapped him. Tears freely flowed out of his eyes and his heart began to tear in two.
"Adrien," a soft voice whispered.
He bit his lip and put his face into his hands as sobs racked throughout his entire being.
"Adrien!" the voice spoke with more urgency. Suddenly, his shoulders began shaking, but not from his sobs.
Adrien gasped, as his eyes snapped open and he found himself in completely different surroundings with hands firmly gripping his shoulders.
It took him several moments to register where he was and who had been calling his name.
He finally recognized it as a bedroom.
His cheeks were suddenly gently cupped and his head was forced to the side to look at the woman who had been calling his name.
Marinette.
After a few more seconds, reality finally came flooding back.
Marinette, his wife, gazed deeply into his eyes. He then realized he was in their bedroom.
"Hey, sweetie-kitty, are you okay now?" she cooed, wiping the tears that were still leaking from his eyes.
Adrien swallowed the lump in his throat and nodded.
"Looks like you were having a pretty bad nightmare," she noted with a twinkle of sympathy and worry in her eyes. "Want to tell me about it?"
"Um..." Adrien shook his head and cleared his throat. "Maybe later. Right now, can we just cuddle?"
Marinette gave him a loving smile.
"Of course, anything you need, my love," she reassured, peppering a few kisses on his now dry face, and then snuggled into his arms and traced meaningless patterns onto his bare chest with a gentle finger.
They went silent and Adrien took comfort in the feeling of her warm body against his and her finger dancing along his torso, the only noise being their breathing.
After he felt grounded enough, he decided to tell her about his nightmare, just to get it off his chest.
"You were akumatized," he whispered.
Marinette shifted back to look up into his eyes. She searched them for a moment, probably trying to decide how to respond. After finding what it was she was looking for, an amused smile took over her lips.
"Oh dear. Did you forget to pick Emma and Louis up from school in your dream?" she asked with a giggle. She was joking, of course, trying to lighten the mood and lift his spirits.
Adrien chuckled, nuzzling into his wife's silky smooth locks.
"Nope. I rejected you for Ladybug," he sighed, the smile slipping away from his lips, sounding upset with himself.
"Well I don't blame you. Ladybug rocked that spandex outfit," she smirked and swept her fingernails lightly along his chest in attempt to tickle him. She was pleased with the laughter she had brought out.
"You still would, you know," Adrien admitted in a husky voice.
"Oh you!" Marinette swatted him in mock-scolding. "Then again, I'm sure you'd also still rock the leather skin-tight suit. You still have managed to avoid the dreaded dad-bod that people expect fathers to develop."
That earned some more hearty chuckles from her husband.
"Anyway, I'm sorry that I was a little crazy back then," Marinette pouted and gave him puppy eyes.
"You weren't!" Adrien immediately defended her. "I was just oblivious, blind, and in denial!"
Marinette laughed and slid her fingers into his hair.
"That was part of your charm, though. So innocent and blindly devoted to the first girl you fell for," she said with a wink.
He beamed at her. She was so sweet and he always wondered how he had been so lucky to end up with her. He rubbed circles on her back as he looked into her brilliant blue eyes that were crinkled into an equally brilliant smile.
She gave him a quick peck, before her expression morphed into something more serious.
"So, what exactly was it that made my sweet husband cry? Did I say something hurtful?"
Adrien bit his lip. It was kind of hard to voice what his deepest dark thoughts had been. She knew everything about him, though, including the insecurities he held back then. He just hadn't felt them in such a long time; it had hurt feeling them again as though they were fresh and still prominent in his heart.
Marinette remained silent. She didn't want to force him and she would let him speak on his own terms.
"You stabbed me with a magical needle and caused my heart to break from all the negative emotions and thoughts I had ever had. It was both physically and psychologically the most pain I had ever experienced and it all happened in a matter of seconds... it was just overwhelming," Adrien quietly explained. "And the thoughts were... very dark and suicidal. I wouldn't wish them upon anyone."
Marinette looked into her partner's sad eyes as he spilled his nightmare's secrets. Gently, she pulled herself up higher on the bed, then pulled his head into her chest to cradle him and protect him from the harsh world.
"I'm so sorry, Adrien. I'm sure it must have been awful. I wish I could have woken you sooner," she whispered comfortingly into his hair.
He wrapped his arms around her and indulged himself by burrowing his face into her soft chest, covered by the softest fabric he had ever felt. Trust a designer to wear the softest and highest quality fabrics to bed.
He smiled, then. His nightmare had been truly terrible, but it had made waking up so much better. It made him appreciate all over again how amazing his life was now.
"I love you, Marinette. Ladybug. Light of my life," he murmured and then pulled back to look at her gorgeous face.
Smiling sweetly, Marinette put her forehead to his.
"I love you, Adrien. Chat Noir. Apple of my eye," she murmured back.
Adrien pulled her in for a loving kiss and more; nightmares and akumatizations now the furthest things from their minds.

Elf on a Shelf
Tumblr media
Characters: Jungkook x Reader
Genre: Christmas!AU, slight angst, one-shot
Word count: 3k
Synopsis: What happens when a gift basket that includes something similar to an Elf on a Shelf anonymously shows up at your door?
A knock at the door pulls my eyes from the pages of the novel I was reading. It was nearing ten at night. Who would be coming to visit at such a late hour? Staring curiously, I set my book down and saunter over to my door, my thick warm socks muting my steps. Peeking through the peephole, I frown to find…there is no one there. I look again just in case, but there is no change to the wide-angle image on the opposite end of the peephole.
Hmmm…I wonder with a shrug as I start to turn, but another tap on the door startles me. Turning quickly, I look through the peephole again and feel annoyance as I find the view empty. Unlocking my door, I swing it open roughly in hopes of catching whoever keeps knocking and running away, but to my surprise…there is no one there. Poking my head out into the hall I look both ways and find the passageway on my floor empty. Looking down I let out a startled ‘Oh!’ as I clutch at my chest, covering my rapidly beating heart as if that would calm it down. At my feet there is a gift basket filled with Christmas cookies, Candy Canes, and an Elf on a Shelf. Chuckling to myself, I bring the basket in, locking my door behind me. Shaking my head, I set the basket on my small kitchen table and search for a card. Finding one, I read it aloud. “Dearest Y/N, I’ve dispatched my elf to check up on you He’ll report back with all that you do. Have you been naughty or have you been nice? Jungkook will inform me of any vice. Take good care of him, treat him with care And you will receive gifts to spare. Now enjoy these treats from my home to yours, Sent from the North Pole to your door. Warmest regards, Santa” I chuckle skeptically as I look from the fancy calligraphy on the note to the treats and finally to the little elf. This has to be a joke. Just this week my coworkers and I had gotten into a discussion about Elf on a Shelf and I had told themI found the toy creepy. That constant smirk on its face and those shiny all-knowing eyes. I shiver just thinking about it. This was most definitely a prank pulled by one of my coworkers. I would show them, though, that I was not bothered by it. I was an adult for heaven’s sake. I would not let myself be freaked out by a small children’s toy. Grabbing the little guy, I hold it up in both hands and examine it. It was a simple doll; plush body and limbs, with a plastic head, hands and feet. He was probably about 12 inches tall; 14 if you include the height with the hat. His outfit was simple. Just green material with no adornments. He wore a red Santa hat. Looking down, I lift up a leg. He had little camel colored boots. Odd. Stylish, but odd. I certainly don’t remember seeing other Elf on a Shelf’s like this. Didn’t Elf on a Shelf come in red with no shoes? Unlike those other elf toys that had painted on hair, this one had dark brown hair that looked so real. I pull off his hat and stroke the strands a few times. Very soft. Putting his little hat back on, I cock a brow at the elf, saying, “Well, Jung…,” I look at the note again. “Jungkook is it? Well, Jungkook. Lucky for you I’m on my Winter vacation, not that I had any plans for this week. My family couldn’t come visit and tickets were way too expensive to fly to them, so looks like it’s just you and me this week.” Setting him down on the table to move the treats to the kitchen, I miss the mischievous twinkle in Jungkook’s eyes as his gaze follows my retreating form. “Let’s watch a movie, Jungkook,” I throw over my shoulder as I pop some popcorn. “There’s this movie I’ve been meaning to watch. Love, Rosie. Have you heard of it?” I grab the popcorn from the microwave with a chuckle. “Of course not. You’re a toy. But that’s ok. You can join me so I don’t feel like the pathetic lonely fool that I am.” I fill a bowl with popcorn and some of the cookies from the gift basket. Settling down on the couch on my side, pillow propping me up, I have Jungkook and the bowl side by side against my abdomen. “Before I press play, let’s take a selfie and send it to that prankster at work.” I fluff my hair and after making sure the elf, the snacks, and myself are in the shot I snap the picture. Squinting, I can’t help but feel a shiver down my spine as I catch a glimpse of Jungkook’s eyes. It’s like he’s staring right at me. And is it just me or is his smile just a little bit wider. Shaking my head to clear my spooked thoughts, I send the picture along with a message to my coworker Debra, known for her pranking at work.
Y/N: thanks for reminding me just how pitiful I am :p
Debra: hahaha. Enjoy your time off with your new man. He’s a cutie ;)
Y/N: I knew you would do something like this. Jokes on you. He’s not as creepy as I thought.
Debra: Told you they weren’t that bad. It’s just a toy. I can’t take credit though, but have fun on your time off.
Debra: Don’t get too crazy, :D
Y/N: Yeah…okay… o.O
So she says she didn’t send him to me. Probably just trying to scare me. Oh well. Who could ever be afraid of this little guy? I think to myself as I look down at the doll leaning against me. Shrugging to myself, I start the movie never noticing how a content smile now adorns his face.
***
I wake up to the brightness of the screen on my tv. The movie had long ended and returned to the Menu page. It was two in the morning. Stretching, I yawn and then sit up. Feeling the empty bowl I’d used for my snacks slipping from the couch I manage to grab it before it can crash to the floor. “Oh! Jungkook!” Catching the bowl reminds me of my visitor. I glance down where I had last seen him and find he’s not there. “Where did you disappear to?” I murmur as I look around me. I don’t spy the little green doll, but feeling too tired I decide to head to bed and search for him later when I’m fully awake. He probably rolled under the couch I decide as I curl up in my bed. Putting him out of my mind, I fall asleep almost immediately. ***
Heading into the kitchen, I toast a few slices of bread and start the coffee pot. Buttering the toast, I take a few bites and then pour myself a mug of the caffeinated hot liquid. Sitting down at the kitchen table with my breakfast, I revel in the quiet of my apartment. It was nice to not have to wake up early and the silence was actually peaceful. It’s not until I’m putting my mug in the sink that I see the gift basket and remember the elf. “Jungkook!” I gasp and briskly make my way to the living room. I freeze a few steps from the couch. “H-how did you get up there?” The little green elf was now sitting on the side table, leaning against the lamp with his legs crossed at the ankles. His left hand was resting over his right which was in his lap. His eyes seem to watch me, waiting to see what I will do. The slight upturn of his tiny lips holds such amusement. He looked so lifelike, suddenly. It was almost as if at any moment now he would just burst into laughter. He had been with me on the couch watching the movie last night. I wrack my brain, but I find no memories of having moved him to the side table, much less of having posed him in such a manner. I snatch him up, frowning down at him. “Are you playing tricks on me, little elf?” I inquire unsure. Of course he doesn’t reply, but the playfulness I sense around him has me thinking that yes, yes he was up to no good. “I have to go to the grocery store,” I tell him. “If you behave, I’ll take you with me.” If I have him with me, there is no way he can mess with my mind. I bring him into the kitchen to finish up with the dishes and then I carry him into the bedroom. “No peeking,” I chastise, turning him on my bed so he was facing away from the bathroom. I take a quick shower, get dressed and then take Jungkook with me, slipping him into my messenger bag before heading out to the grocery store.
***
The next few days are pretty uneventful. Though he sometimes appears in a different position then how I left him, it’s not anything that cannot be explained away. I’m grateful to whichever co-worker sent him to me because I was actually having a lot of fun with the little green guy and it distracted me from the loneliness I would feel. It was Wednesday when I pull out my sewing machine and my bin of long forgotten material. I used to enjoy making blankets and pillow cases once upon a time. I blow the dust off of the machine after plugging it in. It was obvious I hadn’t used it in ages. It’s crazy how life sometimes gets in the way of our hobbies. Lying Jungkook on the table, I chatter as I look through the bin. “So Jungkook,” I start as I find a swatch of a sky blue cloth. “I’m going to make you an outfit because, truthfully, that green garb is hideous and I’m tired of looking at it.” Finding my measuring tape, I glance over at the doll and add, “No offense. Anyway, I’m going to measure you so I can get this perfect.” After writing down his measurements, I cut out a shirt shape on the blue material. Pulling out a section of blue jean patterned material, I cut out pieces for the pants. The hum of the machine is the only sound for a while as I work on sewing the pieces together. Once done, I smile proudly at the small outfit and then hold it up for Jungkook to see. “You are going to look so much better in this,” I assure. Taking off his Santa hat, I slip the shirt over his head and tug his arms through the sleeves. I then slip the pants on and fluff the shirt over them. Standing him up, I give him a once over. My head tilting to the side, I narrow my eyes pensively. “Something’s missing.” Chewing on my lip, I set him back down and rummage through my bin until I find a patch of orange knitted material. Smiling again, I cut a few shapes. This time, sewing by hand, I create a tiny orange beanie. Fitting it over his shiny locks, I grin as I hold him out, taking in the complete outfit. “That’s what I’m talking about,” I chuckle, delighted with my creation. “You are going to be the most lit elf out there, with your dope outfit. All the girl elves are going to swoon over you!” I laugh at my own silliness before putting everything away.
*** It’s not long before Christmas Eve arrives. Dressed in red and white Christmas tree patterned pajamas and black moccasins, I can’t help but feel down. I’d looked up holiday cocktails on the Food Network and found one called Maple Butter Kiss that sounded yummy. Luckily I had all the ingredients at home. Shaking together a bit of vodka, butterscotch schnapps, maple syrup, and half and half in a cocktail shaker with some ice, I strain some into a martini glass and sprinkle a little nutmeg on top. It was sweet, like a butterscotch hard candy and really really good. The holiday blues soon overcome me and I find myself knocking back many more cocktails than I had initially intended on drinking. The fact that I was spending this Christmas alone was affecting me more than I had admitted to myself. My friends were on winter vacation, having taken trips away from home with their families or significant others. And then there was pitiful me…single and with no one to even talk to. I pout petulantly, my eyes landing on the little elf sitting so casually on my kitchen counter, still in the outfit I had made him earlier in the week, his shot glass filled with Maple Butter Kiss sat untouched next to him. “I can’t believe I’ve been talking to a doll, a freaking doll, for a week,” I grumble at him as I snatch up the shot glass and drink the now warm liquid. “How much more pathetic can I get?” I sigh, glancing up to see that it will be Christmas day in just a few minutes. “Well, we should get to bed if we want Santa to leave us any gifts,” I tell Jungkook, sarcasm evident in my voice. But it was late and I was tired. Putting our glasses in the sink, I grab the elf and stumble into my room. Sliding under the covers, I place the doll next to me. My eye lids begin to flutter as the liquor and the warmth of my bed invokes sleepiness in me. I notice the arms of the glow-in-the-dark wall clock striking midnight just before my eyes close completely. “Merry Christmas,” I murmur as I feel myself begin succumbing to sleep. “I wish you were real, Jungkook.”
With the alcohol clouding my senses, I barely register the warm tiny palm that presses against my cheek offering comfort, nor do I see the sad glint in the doll eyes beside me when the little elf’s features turn sorrowful as they gaze upon my now sleeping form.
***
I wasn’t surprised when I woke on Christmas morning to find the same amount of gifts that had been there before were still there. Gifts sent from my parents and given to me by my friends before they left. I’d been a little disappointed because as I had spent more and more time with Jungkook the Elf, I couldn’t help but feel the spirit of Christmas in him. He’d brought me cheerfulness this week when I would have otherwise been moping about sad, missing my friends and family. Instead, I’d been able to feel a childlike wonder and enjoy the magic a toy can bring. Something I hadn’t experienced since childhood. So much for ‘gifts to spare’, I think sarcastically.
I was a bit distressed when I suddenly couldn’t find the little elf. Where had I put him? Had I inadvertently thrown him away when cleaning up? I’d had so many drinks last night, I truly couldn’t even remember most of the evening. When night time finally came and I had still not found him, I went to bed disheartened…and a bit astonished that I was so upset over losing a doll. When I returned to work the day after Christmas, I shared the selfies I’d taken with the little elf. It was bittersweet as I’d yet to find him. My coworkers continued to insist they were not responsible for gifting him to me, but I decided to let it go. I believed one of them would slip up and confess one day. After work, I head to the liquor store. I had really enjoyed that cocktail and wanted to restock on the ingredients. Looking through the bottles of butterscotch liquors I finally locate the specific one I’d bought previously. My hand latches around the neck of the bottle and when I pull it away, my knuckles tap against the bottle next to it, causing it to teeter. Before I can react, the bottle tips, heading for the cement floor below. I let out a gasp when a hand appears seemingly out of nowhere, catching the bottle before it could smash on the ground. My wide-eyes follow the lean fingers up to the back of a masculine hand lined with thick veins. I swallow hard, my gaze following those veins up a strong arm. My eyes nearly pop as my mouth turns in to a shocked ‘o’. The arm is attached to a young man clad in a sky blue shirt and blue jeans. An orange beanie covers most of his chocolaty brown hair. My eyes flit over the guys face, taking in his amused grin, mischief glinting in his dark eyes. “Are you ok?” His voice, so melodic and enchanting has me wishing to hear more. He chuckles and it’s like music laced with the ringing of bells. I shiver as the sound seems to touch my soul. There was a familiarity to him. As I lock eyes with him, I can’t help but feel like I know him. Shaking myself out of my stupor, I clear my throat. “I ye..uh..Yes. I’m ok,” I finally reply, tumbling awkwardly over my words. He was gorgeous and I felt my cheeks heat up embarrassed to have been frozen in place just because of a cute face. Placing the bottle back on the shelf, he extends a hand towards me. “I’m Jungkook,” he informs with a flirty turn to his lips. I slip my hand into his and feel my heart stutter in my chest. “I’m Y/N,” I reply. As his hand squeezes mine gently and gives it a shake, I startle, realizing what he just said. “Jungkook?” I question on a whisper. He cocks an eyebrow at me and smirks impishly.
A/N: Thank you so much for reading. I thought it’d be fun to do something for the hotlidays, lol. I’m doing one for each member, but it’s a bit hectic so it might be a few days between each. Please anticipate them and have a safe holiday!
