I understand why aristocracy and royalty is an exciting setting for fiction/fantasy but if the narrative isn't a serious political commentary or a legitimate critique of the setting (comedic or otherwise), I'd almost prefer if they just ignored all the social and political issues around the hierarchy they live in. that sounds bad, but it would at least be more honest to its identity as a fantasy than legitimately pretending like it's the epitome of progressivess to not beat your servants for making a minor mistake. like if you care about your people so much prove it. redistribute your wealth and power. abandon your privileged life and status to protect abandoned political prisoners from being murdered in prison camps like wei wuxian did. bitch.
#the great kind of also had this issue but I minded leas bc 1. its loosly based on an actual person and 2. most of her power struggles#and with her horrible emperor husband who holds far more power than she does in many ways#but it also prioritized nobles to a really annoying and hypocritical degree#cql also kind of had this issue esp towards the end bc it uses political /social injustices more as plot devices for individual characters#than as actual social commentary. like there's a bit but it's more relegated to support for wwx and lwj's journeys#and also its a more fantastical story. it engages w injustice in a limited yet well defined scope that mostly works for the story#plus lwj also very directly aids commoners for no payment#and like I said wwx literallt left his sect to defend the wens while mm up and left jn protest#and I think its hard to craft a realistic and just narrative around royalty thats not depressing#but neither of these pissed me off like tge did#cor.txt
