Part of becoming comfortable with my queerness is realizing that it’s time to let my love for Marvel movies and tv shows go. They’ll never cater to me. They’ll never give me what I want. I read an article about all the queer characters in the MCU and guess who they were?

1. Loki, whose queerness and genderqueerness has always been dangled in our faces and yet was only mentioned explicitly ONCE in passing

2. Valkyrie, who has yet to be explicitly queer onscreen

3. One of the Russo brothers who made a cameo in Endgame saying he went on a date with a man. Oh gee wow thanks for the representation 🤩

4. Wanda and Vision’s sons (forgive me, I forget their names from the show and I was never a comics fan, come at me all you want lol) who were not queer onscreen, and were children who disappeared into non-existence at the end of the show.

It took until 2018 for them to have a Black title character, or to have a female title character. There has yet to be any explicitly queer main characters, much less title characters, in any movies. If Valkyrie finally does get to be queer onscreen, she will be the first queer character of colour to even be MENTIONED in the MCU. Sure, Maria Rambeau was certainly HINTED as being in a relationship with Carol, but it was never once explicitly stated.

I’m not saying you can’t love Marvel movies and shows. I’m saying that part of my personal journey of self-acceptance is letting go of things that used to bring me joy, but that now only bring frustration and feelings of isolation. Being part of the Marvel fandom once brought me happiness and excitement during hard times, but now when I watch Marvel content I just feel that distinct feeling of being Othered.
