OKAY SO about a week ago I got a drawing tablet, and while it was really weird to use at first I’ve had so much fun with it! Here’s an assortment of doodles I’ve made

I don't remember if I've seen Viola yet? Then again I'm rlly busy being an adult and what extra space is left in my brain is full of my own things

I honestly haven't posted much abt her, I remember saying some things abt her when she was still in development, I wanted some musical themed quest siblings and that's how Viol came to be!

This is an excuse to go off abt her thank you bugg <33 it'll be below the cut bc this is getting kinda long LMAO (also all art done by @  motor-oil-soup on tumblr thank you sarge <3)

She's one of 3 siblings, and is the middle child. Her older sibling is named Dizzy (jazz-themed, she/they/he), and her younger sister is Delilah (goth/dark folk/folk punk themed, she/her). Viol is themed after classical music and more specifically she is Polish (thank Sarge for that)

Since she's music-themed, I like her attacks to be via music. I imagine her having mostly wind-themed attacks but instead of using any kind of weapon she has a violin she uses. I'd imagine it to be like she plays something and it goes off of that, like some of Orik's attacks, or Thayne's when he gives status effects. I haven’t decided everything for her attack wise so :]

She was raised in a way of like a child musical prodigy, gifted kid burnout type thing. She plays multiple instruments and still loves music, but had issues growing up which included the fact that her & her siblings were All Trans <3 They each ended up going their own way, Viol ended up at the college at the same time Copernica was there, and they became friends :)   (I imagine Delilah to live in the cursed city, and Dizzy travels around and performs anywhere they can go :) )

Viol at that time she was first at the college did have a massive ass Crush on Copernica, but saw how Copernica talked abt Armilly so she didn't try and pursue anything. The two of them had conflicting views on how the college should be handled, and when Copernica left, Viol stayed because she wanted to help change how things were happening, she had faith in the staff. Hyapathia eventually becomes headmistress, and Viol is working under her, and really believes that Hyapathia could help make the college better. So later when the quest group comes back to the college, Viol is sent by Hyapathia to 'deal with them'.

So Viol fights some of the quest crew (Armilly and Copernica are off looking at something so Copernica doesn’t see Viol immediately) and they kick her ass after a fight <3. But then Copernica sees Viol, Viol sees Copernica, and it's kinda a like. HUH??? moment for both of them, like hey what are you doing here? 

Copernica and Viol catch up for a bit and she tells Viol what’s been going on, and at this point Copernica has realized Hyapathia is the new Headmistress, so they probably talk about that. Copernica also is tasked with introducing Viol to the others as she never met anyone besides from Copernica in the group. Viol is a bit confused as to why her ex crush best friend is now in a group with some kids and an old guy but. She’s very glad to see Copernica again.

Okay now for the gay part. Her and Armilly bond together bc Viol shares her energy with certain things and a friend of her friend is also a friend, and Viol bonds with Copernica b/c they were previously friends and they both share a love for magic and Viol learns abt alchemy from her. I have some self-indulgent content of them in the depths of my google drive which consist of when Viol meets the quest crew, and I’ll probably eventually write one of Viol getting together with Armilly & Copernica. There’s more misc things involving @motor-oil-soup ‘s oc Cordi b/c they are Friends. Besties even.

I haven't done much art of her ever since Sarge hit her w the Polish Beam /lh but I'll put some of the stuff it's done :] (Once again Sarge when you see this thank you for doing my girl justice <3) Fun little thing abt her: Her pipe is a gramophone!!!

Steamworld quest headcanons

alright, now it’s time to drop all of my quest headcanons! I’ve gotten some from fanfiction as well lmao, so those are scattered in there

Armilly

-Lesbian, she/her -24 -no thoughts, head empty -adhd    -sometimes sensory issues & tics -dating Copernica -practices fighting with Galleo -likes Galleo's puns -can't have caffeine - also can’t have energy boosting drinks (imagine her having a monster energy god damn) -under her armor she's actually pretty buff    -uses that to fluster the FUCK out of Copernica, sometimes doing it on purpose, sometimes not. -the second biggest(when wearing armor) -doesn't like taking her armor off that often, as it is very comforting for her.

Copernica

-Lesbian, she/they -23 -normally very anxious -many thought, head full -gets flustered easily -older sister to the twins -dating Armilly -sometimes teaches the twins alchemy -reads all the books -probably has a diary    -updates it daily -a bit of chub to her -SHORT SHORT SHORT SHE IS FUCKING SHORT!!!!!!!

Galleo

-gay/mlm, he/they -25 -adopted his little bird, it has some cute name -anxiety      -bird is little service animal, will hop into Galleo's hands for him to pet/wind up -a bit VERY self conscious -him and Copernica are wlw/mlm solidarity -practices fighting with Armilly -makes puns whenever he can -very easy cryer -heavy ass sleeper     -very fucking cuddly tho cause he is the largest -largest out of the group     -this leads to cuddle session - at first its just Armilly and Copernica accidentally falling asleep on him, but then it evolves to the twins as well. Orik has only done it once, when he was fucking EXHAUSTED. him and Orik never speak of it.

Tarah

-elder twin, she/they/it -very fucking protective of Thayne, you are not allowed to touch him at all. -nightmares from the orphanage -scars are from fighting with the managers & from when they were rented out as mercanaries -Trusts Orik the most, and then Copernica -Calls Orik Dad -extremely light sleeper due to having to be alert all the time       -this can lead to her going many nights without sleeping -Old habits die hard - always puts Thayne's safety first, will always pretend she is okay if Thayne isn't, so he can get help first. -Old habits die hard - very jumpy, and reacts mostly with violence or running away -if she ever falls asleep on you, you can't move. thats the law. -at first, will never outright out ask for help. It eventually evolves to instead be something like she just stays by you until you ask what’s up, or she'll just tug at your sleeve - CLAWS & PAWS!!!!!!

Thayne

-younger twin, he/it -selective mute -sensory issues -social anxiety -protective of Tarah, but not to the extent that Tarah is of Thayne -nightmares from the orphanage -Trusts Orik the most -Thayne likes the texture of Orik's robe/coat, and will sometimes go to his limp arm, and hold the fabric in his hands. -calls orik Dad -noise sensitivity     -loud noises will cause him to grab and pull his ears down, which can hurt him if he does it hard enough -over-apologizes -CLAWS & PAWS!!!!

Orik

-oldest out of all of them - mid fourties - 45 -he/him -always tries his damned best to remain calm -views himself as a father figure to all of them -eventually adopts Tarah & Thayne -had a s/o who died back while he was in a guild w gilgamech -when overwhelmed, likes to put on his mask so people can't read his emotions fully -gives Armilly and Galleo fighting tips -is WAY too hard on himself. -vaguely knew the traveling merchant -arm is basically dead - can barely use it - lost feeling and movement while battling the bohemeath the first time       - if he uses it too much, it can cause his joints & gears to lock up, causing excruciating pain -reads books at night to unwind

(also Ivanski seems more like a polish last name than a russian one to me. polish last names often have a -ski ending. i know that the whole circus thing he has going on is mostly associated w russian characters but, correct me if i'm wrong, i don't think there's ever been canon evidence of him being russian? also not every slavic character is russian hope this helps <3)

Steamworld Quest roleswap AU is a thing I have put thought into. This one’s just the big 3 but I don’t think they’d be the only ones switching with other characters.

(I’ll put how I think their stories would also change under a cut for people who just wanna look at the art)

Armilly never really got good at swordfighting, so while she still aspires to be a hero, she wound up learning how to do so in a more supportive way instead. Cheering her friends on and learning mechanics to help out around town. Her recklessness also makes it a bit easier for her to understand how to treat injuries without making things more painful. Especially her own. She leans more into fist fighting when it comes to contact, but she’s not opposed to hitting people with a wrench instead.

Copernica, inspired by Armilly’s constant talk of heroism, focused her efforts of improving the world on joining the guild rather than studying alchemy, in the hopes that she could get a good word in for Armilly once she herself got in. Unfortunately, though her family had the money to get her in on good will, Copernica quickly learned that the guild wasn’t exactly what was advertised. Frustrated, she instead teamed up with Armilly and a considerably less interested Galleo to form their own mini guild and actually get anything useful done.

Galleo showed skill in magical ability at a young age, and he wound up falling into the classic “gifted kid” experience. He spent a month or two in alchemist college being chided for not living up to his potential or needing to stop fiddling with his little bird so much before realizing he is. Literally just allowed to leave. So he did. He still likes to practice more unique types of alchemy in his basement (Copernica thinks he should try practicing outside instead) but he’s mostly just tired, and feels bad trying anything with people watching until he’s confident in it.

Okay at its core the Don’t meet your heroes AU is a dark political drama. Lotta creepy and messed up stuff that gets examined in-universe.

It’s an alternate timeline where after defeating the Behemoth Gilgamech became king and built a rather mighty kingdom where he ruled for thousands of years. Not helped by the fact his wives keep dying so he has no heir.

Cut to modern-day Armilly and Copernica, thanks to the mysterious merchant, end up sneaking into a big Nobel ball rather than the public ball they were actually invited to.

Armilly gets to talk to Gilgamech, she gushes about how great he is, he’s internally like “finally good wife material” Orik, knowing his friend is like “if you so much as touch this child I’ll stomp you to death with my hooves”

Meanwhile, Coco finds Hypathica and she shows her the peasants aren’t exactly happy with Gilgamech’s rule. Like these people are burning effigies of him and calling him a tyrant mad.

Armilly, after hanging off the king for an evening and them both loving every second of it he offers her a position as a squire. Her, a massive royal loyalist and already planning on joining the army soon, enthusiastically agrees. 

From there Copernica goes back to school Armilly starts squire training though is unknowingly being courted by Gilgamech the whole time while Orik is trying to convince the king all the reason this is a terrible idea.

Luckily Armilly is rather oblivious though eventually she catches on and isn’t really sure what to feel (honey it should be disgust) she just kind of hopes things don’t escalate and she can prove herself as a knight rather than anything else.

A few months later Gilgamech throws another party, albeit a smaller than the one they met (still close to a hundred guests) that turns out to be an engagement party. There he very publically proposes to Armilly.

That’s when Armilly is like “*laughing* I’m in danger”

Since either way, she’s screwed. If she says no her career in the military is dead before it can even begin. If she says yes then she’s officially a major political figure with zero prep in how to manage that kind of responsibility.

Orik immediately takes over training of Armilly, mostly to give her more space from Gilgamech. At first, he tries to get her to run away but she still thinks that she can do some good. That this isn’t some romance thing and definitely not political since she’s no one from who the hell cares. It’s probably just platonic right? That’s the only thing that makes sense, denial? Never met her.

Orik then switches gears to more political training since if he can’t convince her to leave he can at least prepare her for the position she’s going to be forced into.

From there other stuff happens. As soon as Copernica gets word of the engagement Hypathica helps her gets an apprenticeship in the castle so she can be close to her friend.

While all this is going on Galleo ends up in his own apprenticeship as a nurse in the city (thanks to his mom). He isn’t too happy about it since it’s a lot of work, and worse end up roped into a revolution against the crown and because he unknowingly befriends some of the leaders of this revolution (the twins who they themselves stumbled into a leadership position despite being literal children)

Orik also has an on again off again GF who keeps calling him out on not doing enough to protect Armilly and not calling out his friend publically. That marrying a commoner isn’t going to fix the systemic issues the public is mad about.

The way I’d write Armilly is a lot like Sansa Stark from GoT. Basically, everyone underestimates her intelligence constantly but she’s able to cleverly play into Gilgamech and other nobles egos, along with the laws and traditions of the kingdom to keep herself safe in this very dangerous situation. She’s also very compassionate and does believe in being in a hero. Though in this quickly learns this isn’t a battle she can win with a sword.

i watched some streamed Quest and now i have possibly wildly jossed Armilly headcanons heavily drawing on that one kidfic sickfic with tiny armilly [@sbuggbot that’s your fic!]

voltbot armilly!! or rather, vectron-made, voltbot/steambot hybrid armilly

she’s a rogue infiltration unit. infiltration units are vectron-made hybrids of voltbots and steambots, with a voltbot-style soul and so on, who have a soul-carried and transmissible-by-touch-or-face-to-face-interaction disease that barely does anything to a contagious infiltration unit or other vectronbot (wrong soul type) but is wildly virulent to steambots. 

the first village she went to, she was contagious right away and people were like “this child showed up and now everyone’s getting sick, she is BAD LUCK and we should chase her out”…resulting in the entire angry mob catching it…nice job making it worse mob

the second village she went to, she basically locked her soul down, becoming noncontagious (goal: become accepted first, then let it loose), but as her soul wasn’t quite vectronbot (steambot hybrid) this meant that she could start to be affected by it so she started getting sick after a while. by this point she’d already sided with the steambots and been taken in by her parents so she just…kept it on lockdown…getting sicker and sicker…

and then

copernica’s ice spell froze the disease. 

the spell would’ve actually killed a steambot in armilly’s condition, by freezing their lifespark, but armilly has an electrical lifespark so even with a frozen lifespark she was fine! 

armilly grew up as Mostly A Steambot, with her furnace actually fueling a battery (with some supplementary solar power, maybe? and magical stuff). she still has the infiltrator need to Be Accepted, which sort of merged with really really really wanting to be a Good Person (and the feeling that a Good Person is a Hero) and wanting to Atone for that first village, resulting in an obsession with Being A Hero and Joining The Guild (same thing in her eyes) and the Hero’s Handbook and stuff

although a lot of that is subconscious. she’s just carrying around a lot of poor self esteem and intense, almost overwhelming desire to Join The Guild. (and keep her soul locked down)

she doesn’t consciously remember her first few months of life/first few months out of Vectron (same thing, really, though aside from being unable to consciously access those memories anymore she mapped to a very sheltered steambot copernica’s age) so she isn’t consciously aware of being Patient Zero to a plague.

over time, her body started to react to copernica’s still present ice spell, developing fire magic. which she also kept on lockdown. by the point she started letting it out-as a thing she can Just Do, by that point, a lifetime of fire locked in her lifespark-it had burnt away what remained of the disease. 

if you showed her vectron stuff she’d understand it and know about because that knowledge was burned into her soul alongside language. 

if you call her infiltration unit A-11 she’d respond. she’d respond with anger because subconsciously she knows that designation was a chain while the name Armilly was a gift she chose to keep but…she’d respond.

Sooo, how do you feel about things so far in Quest? :^)

I've been enjoying it overall! It's definitely unique and I give it points for that. Thunderful seems to like genre blending and do it pretty well. There's a lot of potential depth to the card system with all the possible combos and interactions between characters. The characters (mostly) aren't forced into one set role and can work both offensively and defensively. It's rewarding to maximize your damage output and set-up with the gears you have. While it's hard to grind exp in older levels, you get more than enough on your current one. The fighting ring is also cool and reminds me of the pantheon in Hollow Knight.

That said, it's not perfect. Deck balancing and editing are integral to any card game, but usually you only have one to focus on at a time. Here there's three, minimum two I think? And you don't just have to worry about the deck's internal consistency but how they'll interact with the other ones, too. You get lots of cards, which is fun for playing around, but can also be overwhelming. The Twins in particular get like a million to consider! It can feel bloated and tiresome to deck build with this in mind. Each area tends to have enemies with different elemental resistances, so you'll be changing cards frequently to keep up or dropping a weaker member altogether for the area.

The story's been adequate. The art is clean and the environments are varied. The overworld music is fine, but the battle music is fantastic and has been stuck in my head for days now.

Now for characters. Armilly is def my fave and I'll expand on it more when I beat the game, but she's very charming and I love her. Copernica has grown on me a little, but I'm not a huge fan. Galleo is just a mood. Orik was a nice breath of fresh air for the group dynamic, although I wish he'd put his mask back on. Tarah and Thayne I'm largely indifferent towards; I guess I prefer Tarah. I do enjoy their group dynamic.

Random complaints: I wish you could properly skip cut scenes, not just mash b to get through dialogue. Heist also had this problem, but it was much less prominent. Skipping pauses whenever a character changes position and it's irritating to go back through chapters or repeated boss fights. The humour is also hit-or-miss for me, more often miss. Heist occasionally had this issue, but Quest makes me groan more often than not. I can't put my finger on it exactly.

To wrap up, it's fun and has lots of great qualities, but I much prefer Heist's gameplay. I'll prob have more to say later.

Orik for the character prompt thing!

I start working on Orik because @tired-t-rex gave me a choice involving him and then you send this one in adsfjdskl; so I'm going to copy/paste: I’m gonna do Orik because I’ve built so much on his character (also he’s my favorite but. yea ok)

Why I like them

He’s really fun to write for in general. I remember when I did a character study it was really fun because he’s a quiet character but he’s very perceptive. I tend to put a good deal of care with how I write him--especially when it comes to interacting with the twins. Also sometimes I sort of look up to him for some traits, like his levelheadedness and patience with things.

Why I don’t

If there was something I disliked I have either forgotten or grew to like it (his real face is a perfect example of this)

() and Copernica is probably the only one he’d actually trust to keep a secret/not spoil any sort of surprise.

He kind of straddles that line between bi and ace a lot of the time? and either way, demiromantic based on how he developed feelings for Umeko. (Which is part of the reason he never got in another relationship like that -- it takes work to build that sort of bond and he didn’t want to go through it all again. Also by the time he was even in a state of mind to try after losing Umeko, it had become clear he wasn’t aging normally and he doesn’t want to outlive another lover.)

For some weird reason I was thinking about the Mind Control AU this morning (Hyapathia puts a mind control spell on Copernica during their confrontation, then teleports away with her to reawaken the Necronomicog). I mean it would obviously completely change the third act of the story, but I was mostly thinking about how different the campfire moment would be.

Copernica's still recovering from being mind controlled (which can be just as physically draining as it is mentally), Armilly is emotionally broken just like in canon. Galleo's the only one of the three who has the energy to be mad at Orik and he's pissed. Orik knew all this time about the Dark Lord being Gilgamech and he never saw it fit to tell them? Especially after Copernica was kidnapped? Sure, it wasn't something Armilly would have wanted to hear, but that's important information and Galleo's mad that Orik kept it from them.

Even if Orik had his other reasons, like making sure they weren't going to just get killed---Galleo isn't listening, not at first. Orik doesn't do much to argue, he knows Galleo ought to be angry and he isn't really in a mood to justify himself--too upset with himself. It takes a comment from Armilly telling Galleo to cool it to get him to stop before he crosses a line. ("Can't you see he already feels bad?")

The twins are kinda there like o___o since they led the team to the city and decided to stick around and this is not something they expected to happen. ("YOU DRAGGED CHILDREN INTO THIS--!" "Hey, we chose to stay. We could've just ditched you once we got to town.")

It probably gets easier for them to regroup as a team once Galleo's burnt off his bad mood, but ain't that a roadbump

For the ask game: 1 and 4 for A Beginning

1. What inspired you to write the fic this way?

I’ve had the general loose idea for the scenario in the Voltbot Armilly AU for a while now, but I finally wrangled it into a fic. At one point in my head, it was from Armilly’s POV and focused a bit more on how she wound up there, but by the time I sat down to write it, my mind had shifted over to Copernica’s perspective instead. Maybe I’ll elaborate on Armilly’s side some other day if/when I go more into the Voltbot Armilly AU. (The catalyst that led to me writing it down might have been chapter 2 of Tell Your Heart to Beat Again, I’m not 100% but I’m pretty sure.) 

I knew that I wanted Coco to meet Armilly while the latter had just recently been taken in by her soon-to-be parents, and that Copernica was going to cast her first spell (an ice one) to help Armilly’s fever. It was mostly wrangling the background scenario to put Copernica where she would be likely to run into Armilly. 

4. Favorite line of dialogue?

Oh, that’s a toughie, especially since I don’t consider “A Beginning” to be very dialogue-heavy. I guess something that I rather liked was this exchange between Coco’s parents:

“[...]hold on, where’s my spellbook?”

“Never mind your book, where’d Copernica go?”

Incoherent Rambling about Copernica and Armilly: Part 2/3

Once again, spoilers! Everything's under the cut.

OK I mostly skipped over the cursed city for this. I'm sure they have their moments, but I'm focusing on the big moments between them. So, this is now skipping to the necronomicog.

Even after you learn about Gilgamech!!! Armilly is fucking heartbroken. Copernica doesn't use this to poke fun at her. instead, she supports her, and after Orik's whole speech, brings something back from the beginning of the game. something that Copernica held near and dear to her heart. "deploying knowledge practically, for the good of the many". Copernica brings this phrase back once more, using it to help motivate Armilly, to help her get that usual pep back in her step.

This continues with the art from chapter 16. Copernica is seen looking back to armilly, specifically looking at her. She's taking up the rear with Armilly, who's lagging behind, still coping with her new knowledge. The two have some sorta strong bond, that when one of the other is going through something, the other understands what they need.

At the start of the chapter, Copernica turns and asks Armilly flat out if she's okay, because she hasn't said anything. the others have their usual banter, but Copernica is specifically focusing on Armilly, to make sure she's okay. I think specifically because they Chose Copernica for those lines, it shows a strong bond they have.

Now, onto the retro-specters. First off, the dragon. Copernica has a comment to armilly before the fight “you beat it last time, Milly, let’s do it again”. And then after the fight, when armilly is lamenting about the guild, she gives her words of encouragement. “Those guild jerks can’t hold a candle to you.”

With Hyapathia’s retro-Specter, Armilly offers the same thing to Copernica, with her lines like “we can see it too. You show that bird, Coco!” And post fight with “I know she was important to you.”

Armilly’s retro-specter digs into her insecurities about her background, and her lack of a guild membership. After her retro-specter calls Armilly a loser, Copernica stands up her, saying “Hey! Who do you think you are?” - example of Copernica specifically wanting to defend Armilly. Now, Galleo does defend Copernica from her retro-specter, but thats obviously wlw mlm solidarity. moving on.

I'd like to imagine the quick dialogue exchange between Copernica and Armilly before fighting Gilgamech for the second time to be Copernica wanting to offer her sympathies to Armilly. The two of them have been friends for so long, and Copernica has most definitely seen Armilly being laughed at, if people have laughed at her before like the dialogue says.

Incoherent Rambling about Copernica and Armilly: Part 1

This took about an hour to do LMAO. ignore any and all spelling mistakes please! It'll be under the cut. Steamworld Quest Spoiler warning. (Tumblr has an image limit so this is part 1)

It's established from the beginning that Copernica and Armilly are close friends, as Copernica states that she had to 'pull Armilly from bed in order to get her to come' when they are looking for the peppermint puffer. They're close friends and they are extremely different.

We don't know how long its been since Copernica left the college. at this point in the game, you don't even know Why Copernica left the college. Armilly doesn't push, she might know, she might not. She's just excited to be out doing 'heroic deeds', and to be with her friend. Even in the beginning, it’s shown that Copernica understands Armilly, even asking her to take the lead because she gets restless.

Despite Copernica seeming annoyed at Armilly at times, it's very obvious how close they are. This can be seen throughout the game's dialogue and even art of them. In chapter 1, Armilly talks about spooking a coglin, and instead of brushing her off, Copernica wants to know. After giving her another hint on startling, armilly's obviously excited. Early game Copernica Does tease armilly quite a bit. she seems not impressed, but in fact amused at Armilly's seeming love of heroism. I'd just put this to the two being close friends. Armilly doesn't seem hurt by it, she just keeps on going.

Even early on in game, both Copernica and Armilly use the 'deployt knowledge practically, for the good of the many' back and forth. While talking to Copernica, Armilly uses it, when the main trio finally come together.

When meeting Hyapathia, Armilly is standing up for Copernica, demanding to know who Hyapathia is. She sees Copernica's reaction to learning about Hyapathia, and watches her grapple with the fact that her mentor is now her enemy. Even when Hyapathia asks Copernica to join her, Armilly watches in silence.

After fighting Hyapathia, Copernica and Armilly have a moment. Armilly Knew how much Hyapathia meant to Copernica. She knew that this must've hurt her greatly. Her words are few, and she's eerily calm. The reckless and loud knight is being quiet because she knows that Copernica is hurt right now. The chapter 11 art shows Armilly with Orik on top of the merchant's wagon. Armilly is most likely just giving Copernica time to grieve/giving her space. She went through a lot.
