Couldn't Get Through TUC II, But Loved Dungeons and Drag Queens: Round 7 Time

Obligatory context: I watch them out of order based on what interests me. So far, I've completed (in order): Mentopolis, A Court of Fey and Flowers, A Crown of Candy, the Ravening War, Burrow's End, Misfits and Magic (including both specials), Neverafter, The Unsleeping City Chapter I, Mice & Murder, Escape from the Bloodkeep, and Dungeons and Drag Queens. I'm not equally interested in all that remain, but these are my top choices. Comments/advice are welcome.

I fully love Dimension 20 and the way Brennan Lee Mulligan can tell an incredible story. Of course, the full cast of characters makes a huge difference in where a story can go, and there was no better cast than those they found for the Mentopolis side quest.

I've seen all the main seasons with the Intrepid Heroes, and I've seen a hefty chunk of the side quests. Here's my top 5 ranking for anyone asking:

A Crown of Candy -- absolutely BRUTAL. For such a whimsical setting, it's Game of Thrones out there. The Politics are messy, the war is dangerous, and The Hungry One has seized my appetite. Special mention to Matt Mercer for coming in on the prequel Ravening War side quest. That being said I have no idea if I can ever fully rewatch this.

Mentopolis -- whole opposite end of the spectrum in being the most cartoonish of all the series. I have never laughed as hard and as continuous as I have watching episode 4 of the series. Underneath all of the humor and tropes of a noir, it was incredibly philosophical. Also, I'm a big sucker for murder mystery. If ACoC wasn't as strong as it was, then this would be the #1.

Fantasy High -- a fan favorite. Such a fun romp and an easy-in to watching any DND campaign. The dice really do tell the story here. Shoutout to the sequel Sophomore year, it really fleshed out the world and characters far more. Maybe a little higher on the list than it deserves, but fight me this is my list.

A Court of Fey and Flowers - more politics dressed up for tea. Aabria Iyengar knows how to set a mood, and she knows exactly how to let her players drive a story in the setting she creates. There's something so special the way all of the players stay true to their characters even when it comes to making a difficult decision. They all came in knowing the assignment. Also, it sure is nice to see Brennan enjoying himself as a player #GiveThatManABreak

The Unsleeping City -- Heavily character driven. The concept of a fantasy world veiled around us at all times is heavily appealing. Another very philosophical season, and a season that isn't afraid to let characters have a little conflict with one another. The sequel shows the characters have incredible growth as well. Again, maybe a little lower on the list than deserved, but I can't justify lowering ACoFaF.

A special mention to Starstruck Odyssey for just barely missing the top 5 ranking. I really enjoy the shenanigan seasons.

some D20 predictions

first of all, i believe with all my heart and soul that we will open fantasy high: junior year mid-battle against the night yorb

this is supported by fig saying "we saved the world, surely that counts for a couple of classes." because while they have saved the world before, this implies a more recent saving of the world that put their grades in jeopardy. i think the night yorb was that specific world-saving

based on the dome background when riz was being told that perfect grades maybe not being enough, i think we're in for a college application arc, with him being in an entrance interview at astral state university when he's told that

like many people, i feel a trackerbees breakup coming on the wind. i wouldn't hate a zelgug breakup either, but i think that's less likely after they worked through their issues in fhsy

i think adaine will multiclass into some kind of fighter or paladin

she also needs to get a job to help pay for college (the bad kids gave away ALL their money last season and jawbone is trying to support MULTIPLE adopted teenagers on a guidance counselor's salary!!)

kristen's dex will NOT get better even a little

ayda/arthur reconciliation arc. brennan negotiating against himself

this is less a prediction and more a fervent hope--but i desperately want someone from the cast of the seven to cameo in an episode. all seven would be too unwieldy but i could see ostentatia dropping in. maybe antiope or danielle, based on how often aabria and erika are in the building, but technically the bad kids knew ostentatia best

torek railgrinder joins the bloodrush team

fabian will repeatedly hallucinate chungledown bim

gilear knocks up hallariel and bill seacaster returns from hell to preside over the wedding ceremony (holding a gun to gilear's head for pretty much no reason)

bonus prediction:

never stop blowing up is a starstruck odyssey side quest. it feels like truly the natural successor to "the ball is rolling up"

d20 new season theory

i have a growing theory that the coming season of dimension 20 is going to be somewhat inspired by knights of the round table AND maybe set in space?? and I HAVE EVIDENCE

if you lighten the reveal moment from the trailer you get a slightly better sense of what the set is going to look like and here's where things get interesting

this looks like eastern architecture, you have the spires/spikes and the really specific shapes of the domes and the color pallet being these rich purples and greens. but i think matt is the WRONG person to be doing something like arabian nights and we just did fairy tales in neverafter.

but you know what we HAVENT done. arthurian legends. and the two things that get me the most about htat are these. they are too intentional to not be important and there are so many similarities between both of these objects and the representations of the holy grail in art? i submit for consideration the following:

I ALSO submit for consideration the shirt that mercer is wearing, notably, the fact that it depicts a blade (I KNOW I KNOW it's exu but let me extrapolate)

in addition to that, i think that the spires COULD be gothic architecture which would have been the prominate architectural style of the mid-12th century when the legends of the round table first emerged.

here is where things get a little wild and i'm starting to take some liberties but we have a very similar background here as we do in a starstruck odyssey

we have also a few other elements that make me wonder if we have a space knight situation then umber one being the various orb like features on the dm screen

as well as the sound effects for the 'coming soon' sounding very space laser-y and the loading of the bar being reminiscent of some futuristic tech as seen in something like tron

this also would track with the pattern of d20 combining themes/genres for storytelling purposes AND it would give them a lot of creative liberties with the "aesthetic" which could explain the less traditional arthurian theming!

my other guess would be that it would be a true space fantasy which would compliment the instrumentation choices of the teaser as well as the drama of the whole ordeal!!

ANYWAY those are my thoughts as to what's coming and i look forwards to finding out more!!

I think so much about like the first five or six episodes of A Starstruck Odyssey when they were like “we’re not the heroes of the galaxy, we’re just people trying to scrape by and here are all the messy decisions that come with that” and just exploring how the desperation to turn a profit for some level of financial stability so easily slides into problems with addiction, gambling, and wealth hoarding. 

It hit this exact perfect sweet spot of being zany and wacky and fun but still being deeply grounded in the exhaustion and desperation of living week-to-week in a system meant to grind you down, and how “tearing down the system” feels impossible on a macro scale.

And there’s all these little nudges towards a better path, joining a union, creating worker solidarity through trust and human decency to your fellow labourers, fighting for the rights of workers and robots, small bits of common good they could achieve without having to take on galaxy-wide megacorporations as 6 individuals. Its an enormous univers of trillions of lives and maybe it feels impossible to “save the world” in a classic sense, but there’s so much good that can be done both locally and generally.

But then here comes clippy and suddenly they ARE saving the galaxy but from a big slug instead of the corporations, right back to a classic “superheroes saving the galaxy from a great fantasy evil” storyline that ends up really undermining the bigger themes in (imo) an effort to remain within the safe bounds of happy lighthearted comedy heroes saving the day. I don’t think the season is bad or morally wrong in any way, but I really feel like the first third of Starstruck felt so amazingly revolutionary and fresh in a way that the end of the show isn’t really able to fully deliver on.

And this isn’t to say that they absolutely should’ve pulled back on the high fantasy scifi epic nature of the story with slug parasites and space battles either, just that the way they end up going about it could’ve more effectively run with the themes of the season more. Compare it to, say, the Ezri arc of Campaign 3 of Naddpod where the PCs end up also having a crazy scifi battle with a godlike AI and a corporation seeking to harness its power. By the end of that arc, the rebels quite literally seize the means of production of Ezri and overthrow the fascist propaganda-spewing government holding them down. The PCs are a small cog in a much larger community of common people fighting for the good of everyone, while still feeling epic and heroic, instead of being rugged individualists who save the world without changing much of anything.

All this to say, I’m tentatively very excited to see what the D20 crew can do with NeverAfter, specifically because with us all going in knowing that it is a full-on horror season, it gives them the wiggle room to actually go in on the themes and tropes of horror fiction without having to pull it all back to make sure that it ends with our plucky yet comedic heroes saving the day and living happily ever after exactly as previous seasons.

that said if youre here for my ride the cyclone stuff i DO recommend fantasy high to you actually. its also about six teens who get into shenangians and sometimes die but they get to do magic and kill people and solve mysteries and its a wonderful balance of silly and serious. i have cried intensely both from laughter and pure emotional damage on several accounts !

there are also MANY canon lgbtqia+ characters INCLUDING the player characters, and theres a mix of casual rep and also of self discovery and realization within that part. one of the character’s arcs/development in the second season is based around being aroace basically even though its not directly said in the campaign (it is elsewhere though!!)

all (most of) the characters are very lovable and real and its really good storytelling especially for a dnd game. wait DONT LEAVE !!! if you dont know SHIT about dnd YHATS OKAY I DIDNT EITHER !!!!! honestly i think its a good introduction to it because the players are also just getting used to 5e (5th edition) in the first few eps so many game mechanics are explained!!

AND ALSO! the players are all comedians and theyre so fucking funny PLS i PROMMY its good its pretty long but its SO WORTH IT

the first season and the first few episodes of the second season can be found on youtube!!! the rest (including oneshots) need a dropout subscription (the app/site the company collegehumor uses for their shows) (everything on there is really good too btw. side note their game changer show is very funny too). but they’re a really good company unlike other streaming services

and if you dont end up liking fantasy high or think wow ann that doesnt sound very interesting THATS OKAY!! dimension 20 (the collective name for all their dnd campaigns—its an anthology series basically) have MORE!! (pictured below)

personally i’ve seen fantasy high, misfits and magic, starstruck odyssey, and maybe almost half? of neverafter and theyre all good!! ive also seen high praise for a crown of candy, the unsleeping city, and a court of fey and flowers in particular, though i havent seen any of them (some didnt click with me and some i just havent gotten to). they all have a different vibe so theres GOTTA be something for everyone. the special effects and editing and art just get better with each season too

TLDR UHM. if you like ride the cyclone i think you would like fantasy high you should check it out its really funny and has really good characters and story :)!! and if you dont like it THATS OKAY the rest of dimension 20 is also really good and engaging despite its length! it’s definitely worth checking out i HIGHLY reccommend

About Episode 15

Of a Starstruck Odyssey. 

Honestly kinda scared, I don’t think I’ve ever been nervous about how a season is going to go. Maybe because this is my first time watching a season as it unfurls. I’m so excited though, because these guys seem so crazy, so random and chaotic, that I have total faith that they can pull this off no problem.  They fought a Vercadian Protector Droid out of sheer will and spite (?) so I have faith that they can pull off a simple jail break. Also, I really really really want to see more interactions between Skip and Norman, not because I think Norman should be redeemed; but because I think it would be super funny.

Maybe, just maybe. The reason we don’t see foxy or bonnie in security breach is because they were the biggest threats to William. Foxy is almost always associated with Michael. So foxy must leave to get rid of the pyrotechnic. Bonnie seems to be the most aggressive, so he must be recalled as well. (To many rabbits to keep track of, Afton you silly bunny, he’s just as aggressive as you) The new kids (Roxy and Monty) would be easier to manipulate as well. It would be impossible to throw away Freddie the ringleader because he is the face of the company (perhaps Henry was better at the business side of things) So he would be powerless without his band. Chica was the first, so perhaps she would be more aware, or perhaps not, perhaps she will be tricked just as always.

hi!!! good to hear from you again! the problem with infused alcohols is that the fruit or whatever is saturated in alcohol and you have to chew it. blugh. and now I've gotta eat all the cherries bc I paid for it. your beverage sounds better. my night is going pretty neutral. got some pizza. watched the rest of the third episode of a starstruck odyssey which was rad.
