Your argument is still flawed. Just because you as a neurodivergent child was able to recognise red flags, doesn’t mean the rest of us were. I wasn’t. My best friend wasn’t. It is absolutely victim blaming to imply that our abuse at the hands of online groomers was our fault because we “didn’t know how to use the back button” or didn’t follow the gospel of “don’t like, don’t read”. We DID like what we were being exposed to - we liked the attention, the air of edginess and the “maturity” our groomers said we had. That was the problem. You as an autistic mentally ill person can still be ableist towards others, and the fact you don’t understand that (or just don’t want to admit it) should be a sign to your followers that you are not the pro debater with the flawless moral compass that you think you are. I approached you with respect, as someone who doesn’t class themself as belonging to either side of the discourse, and you still talked down to me and implied that my abuse was my fault. Congratulations for being lucky enough and smart enough as a child to escape online victimization. But you were just that - lucky and privileged. Don’t condescend to those of us who weren’t.

I never said that it’s the victim’s fault for being abused. That always lies with the abuser. I just said that there are things designed to keep people safer and that choosing not to use them is a person’s fault. If they don’t know about those things or don’t know how to use them correctly, that’s another animal entirely, and I said so before in other posts.

Look, online predation is a problem. But I’m sick of people getting pissy with me for suggesting educating kids to keep them safe. For suggesting that kids online have responsibilities too. For suggesting they ought to respect the personal boundaries of others and learn the rules of the space they’re entering. Ignorance is fine. Willful ignorance is not.

“Think of the children” is how it always starts. Burning books (and sometimes people) is how it ends. And it didn’t help children when the Victorians did it, and it didn’t help children when the Nazis did it either. And it won’t help children if you do it now. Strikethrough, Boldthrough, and the banning of explicit content on ff.net didn’t end online predation. Not a whole lot can, just like in meatspace. So keeping kids safe by educating them and giving them safety tools and rules is the next best thing we can do.

I don’t know what you’re expecting here. Adults can warn, educate, and tag. Discord mods can follow up on abuse accusations and remove offending individuals from their servers (that's why it’s important to collect evidence). But that’s pretty much it.

i guess no one from that community can see me here lol so here’s some fun stuff about a streamer that i’ve experienced the past year

so i started following the former vinesauce streamer j*****i_m**e a little over a year ago and subbed a bit after. person i found amusing and played things that appealed to me. joined the discord community and made friends and became a regular myself.

and you know, white 30-something new yorker, nothing standout or marginal about him. had a funny voice and was crude but like that was the appeal. being vinesauce-derivative is also a plus. very shitposty atmosphere it was nice. he attracted a lot of stick-in-the-mud types though, which was really super bizarre for said shitposty atmosphere. a big lgbtq crowd though. pretty wide age demo too.

anyway, little discomfort things happen over time. i recall a thing happening during stream that got chat to chant “eat the rich” and he didn’t like that because he “doesn’t advocate violence.” which for any thinking person is offputting. and possibly the worst timing of all, right at the peak of the george floyd protests he was playing sonic adventure 2, which involved a sequence where you’re chased by police. cue the acab’s and blm’s and whatnot in chat by people who were already heated. he said he didn’t want any of that because he had family who were cops. so at this point i’m like okay, yikes, i need to prepare to distance.

not long after was a stream where the topic of the military recruitment twitch crap came up. lots of disgruntled anti-military sentiment in chat of course, because again, this dude attracts a lot of marginalized people for an audience, and again he wasn’t having it. family and all that. this reached levels of hypocrisy when the topic switched to those high school army recruiters which he revealed he didn’t know was “serious” and didn’t believe was something they could do. people were quick to point out that, yes, they recruit children.

so as you can imagine it was a very “no politics” sort of environment, except the kind that plays so centrist it allows harmful rhetoric. classic.

the streamer in question was also weirdly bad with technology. he left the discord in the hands of his mods, very rarely appearing to speak in the server. maybe a dozen messages a month if you’re lucky enough to see them. normal interactions on twitter but he just could not bother to understand discord.

around that time one of the community regulars stopped showing up because she was 16, which everyone knew, and the streamers realizes he needs to enforce age policy. thing is, she was a very important part of the community, often running these streams from behind the scenes by helping with guides and emulations and junk. girl less than half his age being an important player like that felt scummy. she’s apparently got no hard feelings but wanted him to apologize for something, i have no idea. her being black and outspoken about blm makes it feel more and more not okay.

the streamer at one point made an announcement that there was some “creep” stuff going on that he was trying to prevent. there’s no way of knowing who precisely was involved but as of recent events having people air grievances it may have been her. allegedly part of the reason this lady was barred from the community was very intentionally the streamer distancing himself from the situation.

so this all culminates in something a couple days ago. the server has a /all ping announcing a new rule, that voice chat and streaming on the server is no longer allowed. and this really riled people up. the final say was that it was very difficult to moderate people streaming, was reasonable, but it was kind of ass we couldn’t have jackbox or among us sessions in our own community anymore.

but this REALLY riled people up. you had lurkers and new people coming out of the woodwork to defend the decision, but a lot of more regular people used this as an opportunity to complain about the community as a whole. this included a couple people mentioning how they barely watched the content on twitch or youtube. some of them weren’t even huge fans anymore, but they enjoyed the community and the friends they made.

so from on high comes the streamer and

he didn’t like that.

a complete failure to comprehend why anyone would want to stick around even if they didn’t like him. the tone was alarming and people were bothered by it and it riled everyone up more. someone posted a big paragraph mentioning stuff i’ve said above, cited them as bigoted behavior and cherry-picking political topics to allow. another doubled down saying that they weren’t into the content, and mysteriously they vanished from the server. a mod assured us they left on their own but minutes later the streamer confirms they were banned. again this was alarming.

and the thing was, despite my discontent with the situation, i was sitting on the fringes and shitposting about it in tried and true fashion. i felt attacked and was afraid to say anything damning, but i realized, i wasn’t totally participating in the discussion? these were other people completely independently feeling these things and venting. it made me see that i wasn’t crazy.

now i have a few friends i met through the community who had left a while back, so i also knew these problems existed in many forms. stuff regarding transphobia and obvious hypocrisies.

so the streamer and mods say that if anyone is spreading shit and bad worth of mouth to report it so they can get banned. the word “purge” is used. people i’ve never seen post on the discord applaud it and others are uncomfortable. i saw a couple announce themselves leaving and another couple disappearing. i received messages from friends who wanted to be in contact in case anything happened, and i dm’d a couple myself.

this morning you can feel it’s a bit tense because the people posting are different. there’s still discussion of the streamer being a stressed and anxious guy and his yelling at people is just how he interacts. i make a dry comment about most 35-year old men seeking therapy instead which i don’t believe anyone liked but hey. later this evening i found i’m banned from the server, like 6 hours after saying that or anything at all. gives you the impression they’re laboring over these ban decisions or it’s a more sweeping purge.

so, good riddance i guess. i was figuring out how best to leave, maybe tell anyone who wants to talk that they can approach me, but that won’t happen. i’m glad i got the few like-minded people i have because they’re good people. sometimes expressing solidarity can open doors you wouldn’t normally come to, and i’m happy some members of the community felt they could come to me.

yeah i would avoid the stream and its community if possible because i don’t see it improving, just sweeping potentially dangerous problems under the rug.

by some incredible circumstance i don’t think anyone involved in that community, friend or foe, interacts with my tumblr to any degree. i’m mainly looking to vent so i knew i could vomit out paragraphs here. if by chance you are part of that community and find this, well, i’d prefer you bring it up with me if this affects you at all. i am not doing this as a confrontation or call-out which is why i censor his name so heavily but leave it open. it’s a posthumous thing. a journal entry even.

General Information

Hey there! This is a roleplay group for the manga Boku no Hero Academia, in case you haven’t noticed already.

Here’s some information about us:

We only accept canon characters. Characters from AU’s (villain Deku, fantasy Bakugou, etc) and original characters do not have a place here. Sorry!

We also only accept characters with some “significance.” This means that minor characters who have appeared once or twice without much canon interaction won’t be accepted because…we don’t know much of anything about their personality.

Mineta doesn’t exist in this AU and he’s replaced by Shinsou!

If you fill out the application and you are accepted, we have a discord server that you’ll be invited to! After we all get to meet each other OOC, you will get to make your own rp-bnha affiliated blog for the character you write for and we will all follow each other. We want to congregate on Discord before officially coming to Tumblr because we would like to keep things organized and talk on more casual terms. It’s nice to brainstorm and make friends!

I believe our writing standard qualifies as “semi descriptive.” Basically a paragraph or more is required when you roleplay with us (unless the thread is super casual and your partner is okay with you writing less). If you are used to writing a couple short sentences for your responses, this may not be the roleplay group for you.

Rules

There are some rules if you plan to join us, by the way. We operate under a three strike system as well so please read this page carefully if you do not want to be warned (or even banned)!

General

Discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, orientation, etc is not tolerated.

Do not bring discourse into the group. We’re here to roleplay and have fun!

No harassment is tolerated. If someone says they’re uncomfortable with something, listen to them. Don’t try to change their mind.

This group accepts headcanons of all kinds as long as they are not harmful or OOC.

This is also a ship positive space because most of the roleplayers are multishippers (bakudeku, kacchako, todobaku, todomomo, etc). Even if we don’t necessarily roleplay these specific ships (besides todomomo), we do love and appreciate them! If you have a problem with this, you’re going to have a bad time.

Life happens, we totally understand that you’ll get busy sometimes. But once you pick a character to roleplay, it is unacceptable to drop them within the first month just because you couldn’t adequately estimate your time management. We obviously can’t stop you from dropping characters, but if you drop them within a month of having them, you will not be able to apply for another character until another month has passed. We expect dedication so please stick with it!

If you must take a break, please let the mods know. If you are a more dedicated roleplayer we will be very understanding (for example, if you have been rping for a few months and you need a couple weeks off to study for finals, we will absolutely allow you to stay). But if you have just applied for a character, you’ve been roleplaying as them for a week and you need to take a long break, we will be…skeptical. Unless it is an emergency please refrain from this, and if the latter situation occurs, we may free up your spot so someone with more time on their hands can roleplay.

Blog Rules

You are allowed to interact with other blogs outside of rp-bnha (such as OCs and canon characters from other fandoms) but if you’re going to roleplay with BNHA characters, try to interact with the canon ones we have at rp-bnha. If you feel like you absolutely have to interact with an indie Uraraka blog or something, then talk to the mods and we’ll figure something out.

Set up a rules/info page on your blog! Talk about the subjects you won’t rp, plots you prefer to rp, maybe some headcanons you have (for example, if you’re roleplaying Dabi, you could say that you operate under the Dabi Todoroki Theory), etc. This is to keep people from asking you to rp things that you’re not comfortable with.

Try to make your blog at least a little pretty. Default icons and banners can easily be changed to reflect you and your character!

Roleplay Etiquette

Read the rules on the roleplayer’s blog before interacting in character! This is so you know what subjects they are down for rping and which ones they’re uncomfortable with.

This is a drama-free zone. If you have a problem with someone OOC, do not be rude to them IC. Drama between characters is okay though! Just not between roleplayers.

Always ask someone if you can roleplay with them before leaping into their plot, arc, or thread. If someone writes a starter where anyone can join in, that is definitely an exception!

If your plot is going to include triggering topics or nsfw, use trigger warnings!

Keep OOC to a minimum. If the mods see that you’re getting too out of control, then we will message you privately about it before giving you a strike.

If someone says they don’t want to roleplay with you (or they reject your plot idea), learn to take no for an answer. Also, the reverse is a rule as well: if someone presents a plot to you and you truly do not want to roleplay it, please politely turn it down and maybe suggest another plot, or just say that you don’t feel like having your character interact with theirs right now.

If your roleplay is going to have sensitive topics, talk to the mods beforehand. We will tell you if we can let it slide with a trigger warning or if it’s better that you don’t rp it at all. There’s a difference between a rape recovery arc and writing an explicit scene. The first one is accepted with a trigger warning, the other is an absolute no.

Application Process

Hello, and thank you for taking interest in the roleplay group! If you have read the information page, the rules, and the masterlist, please continue on.

Because we are just starting out, we have a lot of spots open (lucky you!). We call this a “free for all” period. This means you can apply for three characters on the masterlist page, but keep in mind that you will only get a maximum of two! This means you also have the option of applying for three characters and only roleplaying as one if you request it. There is also the chance that you will apply for three but only get one even if you wanted two, because it’s unfair if four people each have two characters instead of eight, qualified people getting one character each!

Getting two characters is a big responsibility, and because of our dropping rules, we highly suggest that you only request two if you know you will have the time to roleplay them with equal passion and quality. Please do not drop them because your time management was off!

After the free for all period, the mods will spend three to four days going through the remaining applications and picking out which applicants get which spots. If there are still some characters who were not applied for (or if the applicants did not fulfill the requirements), roleplayers who are already members get priority! This means if you requested two characters and you only got Tokoyami, you can pick one of the other untaken characters from the list if you think you have the time to rp two characters!

I left a large r76 discord server a couple weeks ago. I made a promise not to reveal the name of the server or anyone involved, and I will honor that promise. I will not give out any names in private asks, nor in public posts. I will not give the name of the server itself. However, I’m tired of holding my tongue on why I decided it was no longer viable for my mental health or my pride as a person of color for me to remain.

That server is not safe for people of color, and has no interest in making itself a better place for them. It is overwhelmingly white, with a white admin/mod team--and while that should have been a warning, it is no excuse. 

Multiple people, during my time in the server, came to me with worries and complaints they were too afraid of taking to the admin team. I had my own worries--people of color were often talked over, white perspectives were prioritized, and our upset in how fandom treated us and characters of color was often whitesplained away without any validation of our feelings. Frustratingly, most of the white people in the server also fell into the category of “performative wokeness”--they had a lot to say about racism being horrible, but had a blind spot when it came to recognizing and policing bad behavior within their own community. 

In addition, the banning policy and rules against sharing moderator talks meant that someone could be banned for any reason, and would be unable to tell other people in the server about it. There was a feeling that the only recourse was to stay quiet or leave entirely.

And to leave would be to miss out on discussions among and with big name fans, an amazing amount of fanwork and content generation that didn’t get posted on public blogs, advice on how to adult and how to succeed in various industries/crafts from older members, and a support network that functioned just fine as long as you kept it to colorblind subjects. As I said in my complaints to the mod team, as long as you pretended to be white, everything was fine. But I’m not white. And the environment was slowly eating away at me and other people of color within the server. 

Of the three person admin/mod team, only one was open to my complaints and at least paid lip service to letting me have a say. The others viewed me as “undermining authority” and “screaming with outrageous demands,” culminating in a public post stating that I should have been banned for harassment long ago. 

Here’s the thing: when you accuse someone of harassment, and the ‘receipt’ is the person going ‘the poc in this server are regularly uncomfortable and unhappy with how they’re treated and you need to do something about it, and as a poc this is how you’re making me feel,’ maybe you should be taking a good long look at yourself. If you think it’s an attack on how you run your server, and on your character, perhaps that should tell you that something needs to change. And perhaps read some articles on tone policing. 

In addition, if you’re acting in a professional mod/admin capability and all that white guilt is triggering your anxiety, it is your responsibility to let the person you’re talking to know, and hand them off to a more capable member of the mod/admin team. Stewing over it and damning them in the middle of a hundred person server without admitting that the ‘harassment’ is you unable to listen to a person of color’s frustrations is not a professional or acceptable way to handle things. 

The mod team did publicly say I left of my own accord and on good terms. They did let me gather my writing before I left. But the longer I sit on this, the more it feels like the very least they could do. I am so upset at how I and other people of color in this server were treated.

One of my friends has been getting panic attacks almost every day and has been unable to sleep. I’m lucky enough that my parents pay for the $300 worth of therapy sessions I’ve had to use on this bullshit so far. I’m so angry that all the trauma I was working on undoing from the last time I got burned in a white community has been ripped open again. I’m so angry that to save my own mental health, I had to leave a community that could have been wonderful, and that because of my justified anger I’ve essentially been blackballed from the white r76 community as a whole. 

I’d like an apology, but I don’t expect it. In a perfect world, the white people in the server will see this and listen, and work to make their community better. At this point, sadly, I do not trust them to do so. 

For those who’ve read this far, please consider reblogging--I hope this will make its way around and warn other poc away from r76 servers comprised mostly of white people, and spur white readers to be more proactive about forming truly safe spaces for the rest of us.
