“Have you seen player 132?” il-nam asked you, he sat in his armchair, watching players drop to their deaths.
You didn’t look up from your binder you had filled of game ideas. “No, i haven't; i’ve not paid much attention to any of them really.” You said honestly, walking over to il-nam and handed him your latest sketch of a game concept.
“He has potential, he didn’t hesitate to kill his teammate; it’s like someone i know all over again” He chuckled as you gave him a unimpressed look. “I was left with the bitch of my team, of course i was going to take the chance to take her head.” You sighed, sitting down beside il-nam in your own chair.
“We could use him.” il-nam pointed to the man on the screen, you looked up and studied the man on screen. He was very handsome, he was also very set on winning these games for his wife.
You bit your lip as he laughed along with other players, you turned back to il-nam. “Tomorrow i’ll start preparing the room for the VIPs..” You informed the host before excusing yourself to the office of files. Once the door was shut you went through files for the news players to find more out about player 132.
You had brought the files with you to your bedroom and read up on the player as you settled in for bed. It had been disappointing when you saw he had entered the games for is wife and unborn child; to pay for her liver transplant. You had turned to your walkie talkie on your nightstand and switched to another channel.
“Get me as much info as you can on player 132’s wife.” You spoke into the walkie talkie and immediately got a confirmation by the recruiter; a close friend of yours, who you had grown close while you both worked for il-nam as workers.
“Right away, game planner..”
- - - - - - - -
Days later, you watched from the control room as another game was played as you planned it, you watched with a big grin.
“Chipper as always..” The recruiter chuckled as he walked into the vip room with a file in hand. “Always a pleasure seeing you, now hand it over!” You smirked at your friend and held your hand out which he took with his free hand and kissed the back, making you chuckle at his flirty advances.
“Now, I believe you requested these.” He handed you the files, a squeal left your mouth as you opened the file up and began reading over the report. Your eyes quickly ran over the page as you finally landed on the words you had secretly hoped would be there. “I have to show il-nam!” You closed the file and kissed the recruiter on his cheek before patting the other side. “I love you!” You squealed as you exited the control room and walked to il-nam’s penthouse.
You scanned your badge you had clipped to your shirt and was granted access. You knocked on the old man’s room door. “Come in.” He sighed out, fidgeting with his tie. “I have news about your possible winner!” You handed over the folder, he took it and read over the report and sighed before walking over to his tv and shuffled through the cameras to show the players eating their breakfast.
“He’ll be even more convinced to join you if his whole reason for winning this game is dead.” You pointed out, sitting on the arm of the chair.
il-nam nodded and grinned at you. “Good job, finding this.”
You bowed your head in thanks. You looked down at your watch and checked the time. “VIPs should be landing here in the next hour, sir.” you informed, getting up from the arm and walked to a cabinet he had in his penthouse, you unlocked the cabinet and pulled out his gold bedazzled owl mask, he would wear in front of the VIPs.
“I assume you haven’t seen your gift?” il-nam asked, a small smile on his face. You tilted your head confused. “You got me a gift?” You questioned, the old man nodded at you. “Your gift is on your bed.”
With that you left off to your level that was your space, you quickly walked into your room and squealed as a white 3D matte mask laid on your bed. You picked it up and smiled at it.
“For my brilliant gameplanner.” - Host
You noticed the coat that laid on the back of your vanity chair. You looked around your bedroom for your outfit for the VIPs.
- - - - - - - -
You sighed as you pulled off your gloves as you walked to the elevators, you scanned your badge and pressed your floor.
It was another year of sadistic games you had planned out. You quickly placed your things away. As you hung up your clothes you heard the faint call from your walkie talkie you had left on your kitchen table. You sighed and walked to the kitchen and picked up.
“Gameplanner, the host is requesting you to his penthouse.” A manager called out, you answered briefly, grabbing your white mask and game binder, before walking to the elevators. You pressed il-nam’s floor which was the highest on the panel. You sighed, as the elevator stopped, the doors opened to show the recruiter; he smiled at you as he entered.
“Gameplanner.” He greeted, taking your hand and bring it to his lips. “Recruiter!” You smiled back. “il-nam called you up too?” He asked, pressing il-nam’s floor. “Yep, probably wants to discuss players and games..” You guessed.
As elevators opened to show il-nam’s house. You both walked into the penthouse and walked to his living room where he sat, someone with him, their back to you both.
“You called?” You asked, the old man smiled as he motioned for the other person. “This is our newest member.” The stranger stood up and faced you both. You and the recruiter recognized the man in front of you. “Ah, player 132! I’m glad you’ve taken il-nam’s offer.” The recruiter smiled at the man, holding out his hand.
The ex-player shook his hand. “The salesman, wouldn’t have made it here if you didn't give me that card.” He charmingly smiled.
il-nam chuckled at the two before turning towards you, “In-ho, this is our game planner, she’s also a former winner of the games; player 033.” In-ho raised an eyebrow as you held a blank face and stuck out your hand and firmly shook his. “Nice to meet you.” You greeted, taking you hand back and held closely to your binder.
“What will be his job exactly?” The recruiter questioned, you both looked as il-nam smiled at you three. “In-ho will help out with the staff, more specifically the soldiers, you see he’s a former cop!” il-nam explained, making you and the recruiter raise your brows at the job.
“Oh, il-nam i have the layout of games this year!” You perked up and opened your binder, in-ho watched as you flipped to a page and laid it down on the table for all to see.
In-ho read over the pages, he watched as you smiled at il-nam’s praises. You had been the sadist, who created the monstrous games, many players had threaten to kill you if they had gotten out of the game. “Impressive work.” In-ho complimented.
“Thank you!” You nodded before turning to il-nam. “I need to go unpack my things but just have the workers return it to me.” You smiled at the old man before excusing yourself back to your floor.
- - - - - - - -
It had been weird for another person to be in the control room with you. You had placed in-ho on cameras while you watched the players in their dorm, teams had begin to form liked you hoped. “How long have you worked for the host?” In-ho questioned as you both watched players bond.
“Three years ago, I was offered after I had won, didn’t even get to play the final game, killed the girl in the dorm after she tried to suffocate me in my sleep.” you explained, tapping on the board in font of you. Several camera footage popped up on the screens.
“You know, a lot of players curse you out for creating such terror.” His words made you chuckle. “I’ve heard, you get used to it after one game.” You smiled at him for the first time. In-ho stared at you, a small smile on his face. You quickly dropped the smile and cleared your throat.
“I need to go figure out the lighting for one of the games, excuse me..” You brushed past in-ho and walked out of the control room.
- - - - - - - -
In-ho watched carefully as you and il-nam watched players fight for their lives, you had a content smile while the concept worked perfectly; your walkie talkie crackled on the kitchen table, you popped up and walked over with a smile as a deep voice went through.
“Wonderful work as always gameplanner.” The recruiter compliment, making you chuckle before walking to the hall to continue talking without disrupting the game.
In-ho turned to il-nam who watch the games with glee. “Are they together?” He asked, making il-nam turned to him confused.
“The recruiter and the planner, i mean.” In-ho clarified, il-nam glanced back at you and noticed how happy you were and shrugged.
“They’ve been close since they both started working for me, who’s to know…they might even be married?” Il-nam guessed, thinking back to how you both always threw flirty glances and even affection every time you had been around each other.
In-ho nodded and sat back in his chair, his mind drifting off into what your relationship could be with the recruiter.
A few minutes had passed and you walked back to your chair, a smile still on your face. “Sorry gentlemen, the recruiter was just giving feedback!” You bowed your head to the pair apologetically, il-nam smiled and wave you off.
As you all watched the game finish, il-nam had gotten up and walked to his bedroom for the night, leaving you and in-ho alone in the penthouse. You both ad began to pick up, you collected the drink glasses while in-ho stacked the paperwork in order. A peaceful silence fell over the room, the sound of glass lightly clinking and the water running filled the background.
“So, is he your husband?” In-ho questioned, handing you another glass. You glanced over, confused. “Who?” You tiled your head.
“The recruiter, i mean you both seem close.” In-ho watched as you chuckled, setting the freshly washed cups in the drying rack. “And be mrs recruiter?” You smiled and laughed a bit.
“Never, i only humor him, when we were workers together I had a massive crush on him.” You turned to in-ho grinning. “Why do you ask?” You raised a brow, hoping he’d confess.
“Nothing, il-nam wanted to know what were you both exactly.” He lied, you sighed and nodded. “Make sense, il-nam always tried pushing us together, he told us many, many years ago he saw the recruiter as a younger son who couldn’t see the pretty girl in front of him.” You chuckled at the memory, making in-ho nod, he quietly took in your relaxed features.
“Why did you join the games?” In-ho questioned, quickly noticing how you tensed up for a second before responding. “My situation wasn’t perfect, forced to marry some older guy for money; said guy didn’t earn money legally.” You paused, your memories coming back, you paused holding onto the sink. “He was nice and loving to me at first, then one day I had found out the truth of his source of income, he threated to kill me if i ever said anything.” You paused.
In-ho watched as you avoided his gaze and continued to look at the glass cup. “Turns out there was a rat in his little group, they all thought it was me…I think you know what happened next, I had nothing, so i got offered to play the games, won and divorced the asshole once i had gotten out.” You finished explaining. In-ho went to talk but you cut him off.
You quickly dried your hands before turing to in-ho. “I need to go to bed, goodnight in-ho.” You nodded and excused yourself to the elevators.
- - - - - - - -
The next morning, the VIPs would arrive, you had prepared everything to be perfect. In-ho sighed as he walked into the luxury room, you stood in the middle, directing the waiters.
“Ah, in-ho perfect timing!” You smiled and walked over to him. “What do you think?” You grinned, showing off your newest game idea, the room had been decorated like the outdoors, an adult sized playground filled the area, other playground toys littered around. ”What game is it?” In-ho asked, confused to the playground.
“The floor’s lava.” You smirked and pressed a button on the control panel, the floor had begin to pull back, the playground structures stood tall, in-ho smirked as it would drop players to their deaths. He grinned and nodded at you. “Amazing!” He chuckled as you pressed the button once more and the floor moved back into place.
“Thank you.” You smiled, looking at in-ho. You both stared at each other with admiration; In-ho cleared his throat and excused himself to the control room, you nodded and watched as he walked out of the room. You sighed, placing a hand on your forehead, it was foolish to think he’d move on from his wife that fast.
“Troubles?” Il-nam questioned, walking into the room. You shook your head and sat down on the nearest sofa. “It’s nothing.” You tried to dismiss, il-nam chuckled and sat down beside you. “You have this look where it isn’t, now what is it?” The old man smiled, comfortingly at you. With a sigh you turned to il-nam. “I thought in-ho and I would be closer by now, I mean we both work around each other constantly, ask each other for everything; I mean he got me to open up about my first marriage.” You sighed, placing your head in your hands.
Il-nam chuckled and patted your back. “Seems i have a new blind daughter?”
At his words you picked up your head and looked at il-nam confused. “What do you mean?” you questioned. The old man just chuckled at you.
“He looks at you with much more then admiration.” Il-nam smiled at you. The old man quickly got up from the couch and helped you up before turning to the entrance. “The VIPs should be here anytime now; go get ready.”
You nodded at il-nam and got up to go get dressed.
- - - - - - - -
The soft clicks of your heels filled the control room, you walked over to the control panel and watched as the players began to wake up. You silently looked over the monitors before turning back to the elevator doors. You stopped as in-ho walked into the room, a black matte 3D mask on him.
“Looks nice.” You complimented, he bowed his head, in thanks. “Now i’m official.” He joked, making you smile, you leaned over and fixed his collar which had flipped up due to the mask. “Now you look perfect.” You sighed, smiling at in-ho under your mask.
- - - - - - - -
Another year of twisted children’s games had arrived, you were excited as always. You sat in the limo as il-nam had his driver pick you up from your small apartment. “Are we heading straight to the island?” You questioned, digging through your bag for your binder. “Actually, we have another to pick up.” Il-nam smiled at your confused look.
The limo pulled up in front of a small convenience store with apartments above, you hadn’t looked up from your binder, too busy making notes for the games that were to be played that year. The limo door opened and quickly shut.
“Good evening.” In-ho greeted. You looked up from your binder and smiled at in-ho’s appearance. His hair was now combed back, his eyebags had disappeared; he seemed more put together then he did the previous year. “In-ho.” You greeted, in-ho scooted closer to you in the limo, leaving il-nam by himself on the opposite side, the old man smiled and sipped his champagne.
You tried to focus back on your notes while in-ho and il-nam went over their time apart, you had listened as il-nam and in-ho talked about the newest players.
“The recruiter told me this year is a good batch.” You chimed in, flipping the binder page, viewing the photos il-nam had sent to you as the workers built the stage for the games. Both the other men nodded at your words and began talking over the workers.
You watched as the limo loaded onto the boat, you sighed. Laying back in your sleep you slowly drifted off as the distance sound of the waves hit your ears.
In-ho leaned back a bit, a glass of whiskey in his hand. Il-nam chuckled as your head slowly reached in-ho’s shoulder, “I suggest we need cameras in the-!” In-ho stopped himself as your head laid on his shoulder, he quickly fixed your head to be comfortable before leaning back further.
“You two are cute together.” Il-nam grinned, finishing off his glass before placing it in the cup holder. In-ho smiled bashfully, lookin over to see you peacefully asleep; you had stressed over the games to even properly sleep.
“I don’t think she sees us like that.” In-ho sighed out, il-nam laughed at his words.
“You both are blind; she hasn’t looked at anyone with that look since she was a circle worker.” Il-nam confessed, both men watched as you fidgeted in your sleep but soon stopped as in-ho wrapped and arm around your shoulder to bring you in closer.
“You think so?”
“Oh i know it.”
- - - - - - - -
The three all stood in the control room as the players photos popped up under your feet. You nodded as the board began to fill up. As you paced the board; you stopped as a familiar face posed right below your heel.
“Gameplanner?” In-ho asked, noticing your reaction to a player, he looked down confused at the player and took note of the number before ushing you to the control panel to fix the game’s lighting.
Later that night in-ho had walked to the office where all files of players and their backgrounds where kept and began to go through the computer in hopes to find the player that stunned you earlier.
Player 068, or as you knew him as your first husband. Apparently the man had been caught with his illegal money and was sentenced; once out he was attacked by loan sharks who he had grown a massive debt to, leading him to join the games.
In-ho scoffed at the photo, it was the same asshole who almost killed you. Quickly in-ho logged off and walked back to the elevators and pressed the button for your floor.
You quietly made tea in your small kitchen, you had been shook up the rest of the day, shocked to see your ex make it out of the first game. The sound of shoes came from behind you.
You turned and was surprised to see in-ho in your floor of the building. “What are you doing here?” You questioned, grabbing two mugs down from the cabinet.
“I wanted to see if you were alright after earlier, you seemed stunned.” He explained, setting down his black mask on your table, you sighed and brought him a cup of tea and sat down in front of him. “I’m sorry, seeing someone you didn’t expect to show up will do that to you…” You sipped on your chamomile tea. In-ho sighed and scooted his chair closer to you.
“He can’t do anything anymore, you have power in the control room to kill him within the first second of the next game, i’ll even tell the soldiers to have him killed in the dorm right now if you wish.” In-ho placed his hand on your knee making you breakdown as he looked at you while concern and love in his eyes.
You threw yourself into him and cried into his shoulder.
“He didn’t even suffer the way i did..” You cried, wiping your tears as they fell. In-ho shushed you and rubbed the back of your head in comfort. “It’s alright.” In-ho reassured.
- - - - - - - -
Days had passed and you were slowly getting back to your regular personality, since that night you had noticed in-ho had rarely left your side, he’d even began to sleep on your couch while you slept in your bedroom, to reassure your fear that your ex would attack you in the night.
You sighed as you peacefully laid in your bed, your room door opened giving you the perfect view of in-ho who laid propped up on your couching reading whatever book you had laying around. You played with your comforter before tugging it away from you, slipping on your slippers you walked over to the couch and tapped in-ho’s shoulder.
“Come laid down with me?” You asked, making in-ho stopped breathing, you had looked beautiful, messy bedhead, your silk pajamas, the look of love in your eyes. “Of course.” He nodded and followed as you walked into your bedroom.
He took in the decor as he got into the bed behind you, he hesitated to place his arm over your waist. You turned around to face him and smiled shyly before wrapping his arm around your waist. “Il-nam would lose it if he saw us together right now.” In-ho commented making you chuckle and nod. “He would go “i knew you two would be good together”, typical matchmaker…” You both chuckled at your impression of the old man.
In-ho moved his hand to cup the back of your head and rested it on his chest. You both peacefully fell asleep. You wished it had been a peaceful night.
You both were woken up to the sound of the managers voices coming from the walkie talkies. “Frontman? Gameplanner?” In-ho grabbed the device from your bedside and answered, you got up and grabbed your coat.
“A player had gotten loose, we’ve trapped him in the red light field!” They informed you both. “Which player?” In-ho questioned, “Player 068 sir.”
You watched as in-ho got up from your bed and walked to the living room and got dressed, you following behind him, your white mask in your hand. As he was on autopilot, in-ho walked to the field, his gun in hand and you following behind.
The doors opened to show the pink managers and soldiers surrounding the player. In-ho knelt down to look at the man. “Trying to leave?” He asked, his gloved hand roughly grabbing the players jaw. The man didn’t speak and just shook his head in fear of the masked man. “Did you let your ex-wife go?” In-ho asked, holding the man in a tight grip.
In-ho looked at the man with disgust under his mask, cocking his gun he stopped and turned to the crowd and found you standing behind soldiers. “Gameplanner, why don’t you get this pleasure.” In-ho stood up and held his hand out to you.
You took his hand and walked to face your ex-husband, your mask forgotten on the dirt floor.
The man looked at you, pleading to live. “C’mon honey, remember the good times we had!” He tried to grab your coat but in-ho stomped on the man’s hand making him yell out in pain. “You bitch, having men do your dirty work!” He yelled out, without heistain you stood tall and aimed the gun.
BOOM!
You watched as his body fell back, blood spilling on the dirt. You turned to see in-ho with a unreadable look, his mask now on the ground as he glared at the body.
“In-ho.” You watched as he turned to you and quickly wrapped you in a hug and kissed your cheeks as tear began to fall; your ex-husband was finally gone, now longer haunting your mind. “I’m here, i have you.” He reassured, you pulled back and stared at in-ho with admiration and leaned in.
In-ho chuckled and kissed your tenderly, ignoring as the pink workers and soldiers began to clean up. “I’ll alway keep you from harm.” In-ho whispered against your lips making you kiss him once more eagerly.
- - - - - - - -
Il-nam chuckled as you both stood in front of a courthouse, your marriage certificate in hands you both kissed for the photo.
“It's a good photo of you both!” The old man smiled at in-ho who chuckled at the framed photo on his desk.
“Thank you.” In-ho thanked him before searching through paperwork.
“Gentlemen.” A smooth voice made the pair look up to see the recruiter in his suit. In-ho and il-nam shook his hand in greeting before they all dove into paperwork of the next game.
A bit had gone by before the front door to in-ho's and your shared apartment opened. You were greeted to the sight of the three men crowding over your dining table. With a chuckle you placed down your bag on the couch and watched them go over plans.
“Gameplanner.” The recruiter smiled and kissed your hand. From the corner of your eye you smirked as in-ho leaned back in his chair watching you both, but playing it as if he was stretching. “Getting close to my wife?” In-ho questioned as you both parted away from each other.
You chuckled as the recruiter fixed his tie and hair before sitting back down. “It’s only a greeting to the mrs frontman..” The recruiter tried to defend, making il-nam chuckle at the reactions.
In-ho smirked while you gave the recruiter a look of distaste, “He should be mr gameplanner, i’ve had my title longer!” You scoffed, sitting down next to your husband.
“Alright then, it was a simple greeting to mrs gameplanner.”
You smiled at the re-wording and went back to helping il-nam with the scattered papers.

Please share your Trey + darling + Riddle thoughts!
:D the basic idea is that it’s childhood friends, but you’re closer with Trey after Riddle’s mother forcibly separates him from the lot of you upon discovering his sneaking out. >_< something something maybe you’re neighbors with the Clovers, so it was destiny that you and Trey would be so close. The Clovers have always provided the cake and other sweets for your birthdays and other big events in your family. Along the way, Trey introduces you to Che’nya and you become fast friends. And then he’s bringing this shy kid into the picture—the Rosehearts boy, the one who always seems cooped up in his house. You think he’s funny when he’s always asking if it’s okay to play croquet or to roll around in the grass or to kick up puddles on rainy days. You don’t understand the trauma laced through his nervous questions. You will later, once you’re older, and meet up at NRC as teenagers.
You’re like a life-changing experience for Riddle, even more so if you’re a girl, because so far the only girls Riddle knows of are his mother and her friends from the clinic and the scientific diagrams of girls in anatomy textbooks. ^^;;; this is a whole new world for him, experiencing real friendship, doing fun things children do, eating delicious tarts…
There’s always been a wedge between the three of you, mostly unspoken, a cavern that’s deepened with time. To any parents looking in, it’s obvious those boys fancied you. Trey who would spend time practicing your favorite recipes so he could impress you with his own creations. Or Riddle who was so obviously shy around you, easily embarrassed whenever you were around. When Riddle was shut away, it was awkward for you and your friends. You gave up trying to get him to come out to play, and you’d run from the gates before Mrs. Rosehearts could come out and scold you (or worse: phone your parents and lecture them, which in turn led to the lot of you being told not to go around the Rosehearts’s home anymore).
I think now that you’re older and hormonal, in typical teenager fashion, it’s easier to recognize the changes in each other. You and Trey will always be close like siblings (neighbors and childhood friends with his family has marked him forever in the brother zone. T_T), teasing and bickering like siblings do. It’s harder to get close to Riddle when he’s so strict with himself. But you can all see how much you’ve grown. Trey’s gotten taller, Riddle is still short (he’s still growing, he’ll say with a huff), and you’ve gotten lovelier with your maturity. Maybe the unspoken feelings from childhood rear their heads once more when the three of you start doing things again, hanging out or studying. You’re certainly an influence on Riddle because he always softens for you. “Just a few more minutes of break and then we can go back to studying,” you’ll say and he’ll eventually cave in because who wouldn’t when a cute person such as yourself wagers with him!! OTL you’ve always been his first crush; he’s weak to those feelings and all he was denied as a child.
Maybe,,,, rivalry between Trey and Riddle. May the best man win your heart, but there’s really no competition when Trey’s forever stuck as your “brother” and Riddle has infinitely better chances. In the end, isn’t it better to just put differences aside and share? Of course they’ll still engage in cheeky rivalry, exchanging secret smirks and glances to one another when it looks like it’ll be another tally in their favor when it comes to you.
And of course,,,, maybe you and Trey experimented in the bedroom and practiced kissing or holding hands plenty of times before. Something something FWB with them…….. Trey will take anything at this point. Whatever crumbs he can have that aren’t “you’re like a brother to me, Trey. I love you (platonically)!” Riddle who is woefully inexperienced,,, you and Trey helping him……. hands-on sex lessons in the Housewarden’s room. <3 many thoughts indeed. Ooooo Riddle who has better chances of having sex with you, so Trey smoothly wheedles him or you into it just so he can have a taste of you as well. Because outside of the triangle it’ll likely never happen. But if Riddle’s involved…… :)

2025 Book Review #5 Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Tumblr media
This was a book recommended by a friend an absolute eternity ago which I finally got around to reading, having long since forgotten any of its selling points or interesting qualities which might have accompanied the recommendation. Going in blind, I quite enjoyed the book as I read it, finished it feeling it had ended somewhat anticlimactically, and have grown a bit more sour on it as I thought about it to write this review. It’s not a bad book – still a fun, easy read! - but I’m not sure it’s really much more than that.
The book is structured as an oral history – or maybe the transcript of a documentary – about the titular band, a musical phenomenon that set the world on fire for a moment in the late ‘70s before dramatically breaking up halfway through the tour after releasing one of the best albums of the decade. Aside from bits of narration and scene-setting at the start of each chapter (and one conversation in the climax) the documentarian is invisible, and the story is entirely told through quotes from members of the band, associates and hangers-on, or just critics and writers on the period, as they’re interviewed thirty years and change later in the 2010s.
In the abstract, I adore this. I love unreliable narration, and Rashmoon-esque scenes where we get mutually exclusive versions of the same conflict from different perspective. Properly packaged, I am an incredibly easy mark for messy self-destructive codependency and melodrama. Thanks to some peculiar media taste on my parent’s part, I even have enduring fondness for the whole, I don’t know, heroic age of rock&roll? And the whole mass of accompanying narratives and tropes that you get buried in talking about music in the 60s-through-early-80s. And it’s not that the book doesn’t deliver on any of that, exactly – it’s not at all poorly executed, it knows what it’s trying to do. It’s just-
It feels like this is a book about a fictional band because it would be impossible to make such a morally simple, happy and redemptive story about any of the actual bands that clearly inspired it without seeming like Jenkins was getting paid to whitewash someone. It’s not that there isn’t mess, exactly, but it comes across like a born again Christian giving lurid descriptions of their debauched and sinful former life. There’s sex and drugs galore, but the worst person in the entire book is just a shitty deadbeat boyfriend. The entire main thrust of the book is building up an unacknowledged love triangle between Daisy, Billie and Camilla – actually quite compelling! And then it finally reaches a head, is cleanly and simply resolved in the most boringly conventional way, and the story jumps thirty years ahead to a ‘where are they now’. Where is the toxicity, the mess, the unforgivable betrayals everyone has to ignore so they can get on stage together, the fortune-destroying legal battles over the rights to the band’s legacy once it all falls apart? You finish the book feeling like Charlie Brown trying to kick a football.
This might be a problem of me setting my expectations too high, but up until the halfway point it does feel like it was building up to something appropriately nuclear. Instead, it peaked with Billie (and, despite the book’s name and cover art, in a narrative sense he really is the main character of the book) hits rock bottom and goes to rehab so he can be a good father for his daughters and husband to his wife. A truly mind-numbing fraction of the book from there is dedicated to singing the praises of the redemptive power of the reproductive nuclear family and an advertisement for going to rehab and learning self-control before drugs ruin your life. I spent two hundred pages waiting for it all to be groundwork for juicy, bitter dramatic irony, but no – just sincere, straightforward themes of the work. Hideous.
There is one rather hostile reading of the book that works? It’s revealed at the book’s climax that the diegetic framer and compiler of this oral history is Julia, Billie and Camilla’s daughter, and she is creating this project when her mother rather abruptly dies. And you know? This story is exactly what you might expect from an entertainment industry nepo baby asking her parents and a bunch of family friends (including who everyone assumed to be The Other Woman) about her parent’s romance and relationship and putting it all together into a deeply mediocre documentary that will kickstart her career entirely thanks to all the juicy stories from last generation’s superstars. But I am on the one hand really pretty sure this is not even close to the intended read of the story, and on the other still leaves you only reading the deeply mediocre documentary with no access whatsoever to the more interesting story underneath it. Decent conceit for fanfiction, I guess?
The identity of the diegetic narrator is also the justification for how shamelessly the story plays favourites with which band members to focus on – of course her parents and their relationship will be the central focus of the whole piece, of course her uncle and his girlfriend will get second-string status, of course the rest of the band will basically exist to provide colour commentary and throw peanuts (if that). A disparity the story itself draws enough attention to it, honestly, goes from charming to eyeroll inducing when it never actually does anything with it.
The story very much wants to be About gender and feminism, and (going by the discussion questions I glanced at while skimming through the reader’s guide section at the back of the book) is proud of it. Which isn’t really unjustified – it really does have a decent number of different female characters with their own developed personalities and prominent roles in the narrative. It does the thing I kind of hate where by happy coincidence all of them (even the ones on opposite ends of a romantic triangle) end up liking each other whenever they interact, but that’s just kind of a piece with the book not really letting anyone be a proper piece of shit. It is however very funny that the only black-coded character in the entire story is literally in the narrative to be Daisy’s longsuffering and supportive best friend there to provide a bit of maternal influence and talk sense into her when she really needs it.
But yes, decent airport read I suppose? Fun for a lazy day if you enjoy the premise, but not really worth seeking out otherwise.

It really fucking sucks as someone who likes both Steve AND Jonathan, but sometimes the fandom lowkey makes me hate Steve - whether it's by demonizing Jonathan/attributing his best tributes solely to Steve, or by wildly mischaracterizing him.
Yes!
Steve has his own, entirely valid, good qualities, many of which he actually shares with Jonathan: being brave, protective and loyal.
He's also practically intelligent and observant (realising the recording was coming from inside the mall), and he's done what a lot of young lads do. He was a bit of an arsehole in high school, and now he's grown up and grown out of that behaviour.
What that means is that he's a fairly ordinary kid. That's the whole point-he's the normal small-town boy who ends up doing battle with interdimensional monsters.
Jonathan, by contrast, gets so much hate because he's not ordinary. He is primed for the Upside Down. He's not ready for what happens to Will...but he's been expecting things to go wrong his whole life because they always have. When the GA calls him weird, or ugly, or boring, what they really mean is 'I can't relate to what he's been through so I don't have any sympathy for him'.
He's intelligent, sharp, witty, spiky, strong and compassionate. He has a moral centre because his father never did. He's a dad before he's a high-school grad; a mother's helper before he gets to be a child. This is the young man who organised his little brother's funeral, and still made sure his mother ate. This is the young man who had his spine cracked wide with a surgical stool, and tried to save his girlfriend through the pain.
This is a man who (probably without fully realising) limits his own choices because he's determined to expand his little brother's.
The constant erasure of Jonathan's complexities-his constant relegation to the background by large swathes of the fandom-hurts, because that's exactly what happens to kids like him. To kids like me.
Jonathan is different by design. The whole Byers family (sans Lonnie) is different by design. They are the ones best equipped to deal with all of this because they know the darkness that lies beneath normal life. It's not a shock or a surprise to them. The whole concept of the show is about a family that's been beaten down by people who don't care to understand, responding to the Upside Down in a way only they can.
Jonathan doesn't get to have the redemption arc Steve does, because (aside from the photo debacle) he doesn't need one. He doesn't need to grow up, because he's already had to. His outlook on life is more mature, more cynical, more responsible, because it's had to be. From the first episode, Joyce is already in the habit of focusing on Will because Jonathan 'can take care of himself', so his needs don't show on her radar. Not only does that mean she doesn't see them: it also means that Jonathan doesn't have a good handle on his own needs either.
When you learn to make yourself small to keep everyone else afloat, you lose the ability to tell when you're sinking.
And a big chunk of the GA seems to see this and go 'Oh, he's sinking, what a loser!' because it's become normal for him to sink. They see his character as the oddball tragic foil to Steve's everyman charm, when they were supposed to see it the other way around. Jonathan was supposed to be one of the central characters for once, and to take that away from him because he is the way he is...misses the point entirely. You're supposed to sympathise with Jonathan. You're supposed to watch the show and think deeply about the harm we do when we exclude people. You're supposed to learn from him.
Yes, Jonathan does struggle to be sociable, and charismatic, and open! He does struggle to express himself! That's the whole point: he is a child who's been through more in 16 years (as of S1) than most people in small-town America have in a lifetime. He is the way he is because he trudges through Hell and keeps going.
Because he'll be damned if anyone he loves ends up there with him.

I’ve never actually watched a campaign of critical role live, like I first heard of it at the start of c3, didn’t finish campaigns 1 and 2 until episode like 80, and decided to just let c3 finish airing so I could binge. You’ve been in fandom since c2, and I wanted to ask two questions. How does criticism of c3 differ from c2, or even c1? Also, since the fandom has grown and the cast is now much more removed from the fans, do you think if they ever do another long form campaign they’ll try and address some complaints people have had about c3? Or will they just continue to do their own thing? It just feels (to me with no point of comparison) that a lot of people have a lot of valid complaints about c3 and I can’t imagine they’d just ignore all of it, but I could just be naive
Let me answer the ending question first, which is that I do not know how much the cast sees and honestly I wouldn't even blame them for ignoring most commentary during the campaign because I think it's hard to actually run a campaign constantly trying to make the fandom happy. I also have some guesses that the cast has their own doubts that are perhaps less harsh than what many of us have been saying, but are present. Like I can't imagine they missed how rushed the emotional beats of this campaign felt, and how bad this party is at making decisions that feel earned and interesting and don't take them 3 hours, even if they might keep that private. I think the flaws of this campaign are also a bit of a perfect storm, namely, Matt had a very specific plot in mind but ran this campaign with too open a hand, and the cast of characters they played could have used a bit more balance. I mean, I'll admit to being unimpressed by a few of Bells Hells' initial premises compared to other parties, but most actually could have become great if they were in a more character-tailored campaign like the previous two. I think without this goal of creating a big culmination in a hypothetical future campaign, this problem of having ill-suited characters for that type of plot and then pushing development aside in the service of that culmination becomes a nonissue.
Now, fan criticism. This gets tricky, because a lot of criticism, to be blunt, sounds similar on the surface no matter how valid it is. For example, "this ship lacks chemistry and development" is basically a criticism people throw at any ship they dislike. Chemistry is ultimately subjective, or at least impossible to measure in a meaningful way (this is why the But Number Go Up crowd hates when it gets brought up, like, doesn't matter how many fics your ship has if I think the characters are cold fish with each other; I'll never like it) and development is not but requires strong meta to back it up and it's hard to prove a negative.
Shipping aside, though: I think the clincher for me is that people who ended up disliking Campaign 2 any time between the ending of the hiatus or after the finale, were as a rule invested in one very specific outcome: either they quit because their ship didn't happen (including the many, many people who thought Fjord and Jester or Beau and Yasha would break up in the finale, apropos of nothing); in the case of Shadowgast that the ship didn't happen in the way they expected; or they quit because Molly was not resurrected. There was certainly a lot of trepidation going into the finale that not all stories would have a satisfying conclusion (notably Caleb, Yasha, and Fjord, all of whom did get meaningful resolution in the finale) but, at least in my circles, no one was arguing that the Nein as a whole felt robbed and that the campaign did them dirty. You had the weirdass Caduceus stans who failed to understand that his story was precisely what he wanted, or the Caleb Should Have Killed Everyone In The Assembly people, but honestly at least in my recollections a lot of those were secondary to various shipping/Molly complaints and grew out of there as a means to bash the campaign for additional reasons, rather than as a root cause for dissatisfaction themselves. Here, we have people who are ostensibly thrilled with the shipping outcome and the endstate with the gods becoming mortal and who were crowing about that up until the finale announcement at which point they, in their own words, crashed out and suddenly began agreeing with everything this campaign's detractors had said re: lack of character-focused arcs and rushed pacing, and I think that's notable.
I don't feel qualified really to speak about Campaign 1 because I wasn't there, but I think in addition to the violent misogynistic hate which Critical Role obviously did not nor should have listened to and taken as guidance, there was the usual "MY SHIP DIDN'T HAPPEN SO THIS CAMPAIGN IS BAD AND PROBLEMATIC" complaints we saw with Campaign 2.
I guess my point is, getting back to that first paragraph about shipping, you can't go off of the phrasing of criticism; you really do need to take it in context.

(long Paris apologia paragraph ahead sorry)
I love both Delta and Paris, and while Delta is infinitely more likable and I have more in common with Delta re: autism and child abuse, I honestly find Paris to be a more compelling character? (Part of this is because I'm also an alcoholic with complex trauma and I so very rarely see the worst parts of my trauma being represented in a sympathetic light.) I definitely get why people don't like him. he's a violent shithead, a menace to society and himself, not to mention he has the emotional intelligence of a rock.
You mentioned this in a previous post but I think you did a really good job with showing that a lot of Paris' worst qualities (his violent mood swings, his sense of entitlement, his power tripping abusive behavior etc) comes from a place of his own patheticness and refusal to change (especially the times when he breaks down after getting too drunk) and I think that's what allows me to sympathize with and like him more then anything. His childishness in his most monstrous and vulnerable moments really drives home that he's not really suited to the role of all powerful monarch he was raised to be, and who's abuse and status in the empire caused him both to grow up way too fast, while at the same time never allowing him to develop into a healthy adult and that he's in many ways, a kid in a grown person's body who sees himself as doomed to repeat the cycles of his childhood trauma that created him unless he chooses otherwise. (A horrifying and daunting task for someone like him)
Like the scene where he breaks Delta's arm and almost drowns him? It's scary as hell but what stands out to me it despite the horrible violence and long term consequences of his actions, is just how petty and childish his motivations for doing so is (which does not make them any less harmful). he's acting this way because he feels slighted and abandoned by Lorelai. You hurt me I hurt you. This gives me a lot of leeway into both sympathizing with him as someone with similar struggles while also reminding me that he's not the way he is because he's powerful, like he wants you to believe, but a very weak and jaded person who wants to feel powerful and is given the systemic means to. Which doesn't make him less dangerous.
Sorry for the long ask, I'm just very much enjoying your story, especially Paris's "being humbled by life" arc and I'm super excited about what will be in store for both him and Delta next ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹
oh my godddddd this was such an amazing thing to wake up to. i kind dont even wanna post it i just want to hold onto it forever. this is so sweet.
i dont know if i can respond to all of this right now and i might talk more about the different points you brought up later. but generally i am so pleased with this analysis and im pleased you have gotten this much out of it? im gonna say more under the cut
pretty heavy warnings for child abuse. nothing explicit just discussion of institutional child abuse/complex trauma and how it affects people psychologically.
like i said i could talk about them basically forever but re: childishness and being pathetic. YEAH i mean i think it is very obvious that paris’s growth has been stunted as a result of abuse + neglect. in fact i think that growing up in empire alone is inherently stunting because it is a system very much designed to kill empathy and to breed hunger and greed in people. its a problem with the whole society, cruelty and selfishness are incentivized over developing more complex moral structures and even over developing your own identity.
[ people like lorelai are very much an outlier within Empire, but i think its clear that she is….also pretty immature? she has a lot of love and a desire to do good, which kind of makes up for it, but she is childish in the sense that her parents sheltered her and her own ideas about revolution and utopia are very very idealized. i think this delusional optimism is a good thing for paris tbh and it kinda balances out his own cynicism. but lorelai will need to grow up at some point too. its just her reckoning is allowed to be softer. ]
but paris’s case was particularly bad for a few reasons.
the most obvious is that he was prince and naturally the expectations placed on him were a lot greater and the consequences for not meeting them were a lot harsher.
paris was born with pretty severe ADHD and mood regulation issues and his symptoms only worsened the more that he was punished for them
paris at his core is a genuinely sensitive and intelligent person that understands right from wrong
and i think this alone provides a lot of context for how he is now but it also makes it easier to understand why his childhood was basically torture for him. like yeah exposure to complex trauma will kind of naturally stunt your growth at certain points but you also get the sense that paris’s growth was like. deliberately stunted or that the handicap was self-inflicted. paris acts dumber than he is. its how he makes peace with it. its cool to be a callous idiot because if you have to be a self aware and moral person in this environment you will immediately get one-shotted by guilt.
and for what it’s worth i think delta’s growth was also — obviously — stunted. but in a different way shaped by their respective roles.
it’s legitimately really gross for me to describe it this way but it does feel like one of the goals with delta’s conditioning was to make a forever-child. someone who will do what you say and remain perfectly ignorant and docile and obedient. he can be used but is basically incapable of putting up a fight. martino and simon both speak to delta like he’s a child and that infantilization is to keep him pliant and similarly trapped in that same sense of helplessness he felt when he was little :(
i think delta is very low empathy naturally and actually doesnt have an innate moral compass which is what made him such a perfect candidate for the job. but it also means he is super susceptible to getting someone else’s morals imposed onto him as long as he finds them logical and coherent. his ability to morally reason and his way of interacting with people is obviously very underdeveloped but its more immediately obvious why.
ive said before that i think delta is more emotionally mature than paris but i think maybe this paints an incorrect view of things? i mean. delta is not holding his tongue and regulating his own emotions because he thinks its a mature thing to do. hes doing it because he knows not to speak without permission and that if he ever had an outburst the way paris did, he would be beaten within an inch of his life. so i feel like maybe its wrong to attribute this as one of his virtues. (without totally discounting the fact that delta is very sweet and doing his best.) delta would very much struggle with like. setting boundaries, standing up for himself in any way, communicating his feelings. you can describe paris as childish but i think delta is childlike. in that he’s also suffering the consequences of abuse but his specific conditioning has made him more fawny in a way that reads as sympathetic and virtuous.
basically yeah my point was. they were both stunted at some critical point in their development and are both dealing with the consequences of that. paris was a victim but he was simultaneously groomed to be a perpetrator, versus delta who is mostly victim.
anyway thanks so much wow im gonna print this whole ask out ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

FLUFFEBRUARY DAY 4 - CLINGY BOYFRIENDS
@bucktommyfluffebruary
Buck thought he knew what to expect when Tommy would come out from the bathroom after his shower. Even made a note not to attempt it because the intimacy would always just end after the sex because anything else was always too much or too overwhelming.
Taylor had said so.
Ali had always just wanted to sleep after and Natalia was more of a talker so they just hadn't gone to that point.
Buck didn't know what the etiquette was for men. He hadn't had much or any experience at all up until now with Tommy and he wasn't exactly sure how to ask about it right after the aftermath of cleaning up after their first time having sex. He didn't want to be too much, but the need to be near his boyfriend had grown tenfold after the experience they had just had together and he didn't know how to express it without sounding too needy and scare Tommy away in the process. So he was ready to ignore it. Even moved to one side of Tommy's bed so Tommy would have his own space once he would return.
He lay on his stomach, scrolling through his phone when said boyfriend finally emerged from the bathroom, a towel clinging around his hips. Buck didn't avert his gaze, but shamelessly stared when Tommy removed the towel and moved to put on a pair of boxes before making his way to his side of the bed. He sits down and smiles back at Buck with a fond smile.
“Hi.”
“Hey.”
Butterflies erupt inside Buck, sending little doses of thrill through his entire being in a way only Tommy seems to be able to do. Especially when he smiles at him like that.
Tommy shuffles his way into the bed and the sheets. Buck remains on his side, sliding down further into his blanket. This is fine. He should know better than to expect–
“What are you doing all the way over there? C'mere.”
A strong arm slides around Buck's waist and he is suddenly being gently pulled towards Tommy and completely engulfed in a cocoon of arms and chest.
“That's better”, Tommy hums and nuzzles Buck's cheek with the tip of his nose before he presses a long, sweet kiss onto the corner of his lips. He hums back in appreciation and can feel his whole body melt into a puddle where he is being cuddled up to Tommy and even shuffles impossibility closer to pepper a few kisses over his face in return. There's no withdrawing or noise of complaint. Instead he hears a throaty, tired laugh and his arms tightening around him and feels another kiss being planted on his cheek, then his lips for a long lazy kiss.
This is perfect.
This is what it's supposed to be like.

Backseats - Tony Stark x reader
Tumblr media
Warnings: sex sex sexxx but not smut, mentions of injuries, typical pregnancy talk
Words: 3.7k
Rating: M
Summary: Tony grapples with the fact that, after finally getting you pregnant, you’re a bit more pregnant than either of you expected.
or
In which almost every important thing since you met Tony seems to happen in the backseat of a car.
Had an exact idea for this, and it just came out for once, ending me with a sweet little one-shot I’m happy to say came out exactly how I wanted. Hope you enjoy!
Little unfun fact, I may have broken my foot halfway through finishing this. Won’t know till tomorrow, but I am quite pissed
Also want to note that I didn’t notice till I was about half done, but there’s not actual reference to Tony being Iron Man or having the arc reactor anywhere in this. I didn’t exactly do this on purpose but it felt worth pointing out
Ao3 link
“No. No, that’s entirely too many.”
Tony was sat beside you at your ultrasound appointment, squinting to get a better look at the image being displayed.
“Tony…” you started, though you weren’t sure how to continue.
He pulled his hands out of his pockets, standing up.
“Did I hit my head?” He tapped the monitor, and the doctor gave you a disapproving look you could do nothing but shake your head at, shrugging.
“Are you seeing this?” He looked at you, head at a tilt.
“Yes. I told you.”
“You’re kidding me. Tell me you’re kidding me, this has got to be some sort of prank.”
He tapped his foot in relative silence for a moment, chewing his lip.
“We’ve got to downsize.” You gave him an unamused frown, to which he put his hands up defensively.
“Only joking.” He said.
“Don’t even.” You said. Any way you interpreted that wasn’t funny.
“What’s the odds on that, by the way?” He inquired.
“IVF brings a much higher chance of multiples, so not that unlikely, actually.”
You’d only gone for artificial methods after banging for almost a year with no results.
Despite supplements and tracking and Tony stepping it up, something just wasn’t working.
You’d brought it up when he made it home late one night.
“You look lively after fourteen hours.” You said from the couch as Tony walked in, dumping his briefcase by the stairs for later.
“Private plane’ll do that. I’m not even tired, I think I’ve grown immune to jet lag.”
“How’d it go?”
“It was wild. They asked about you. I said you’d gotten into beekeeping.”
“That’s what we’re saying now?” You teased.
“Hey, whatever they’ll print.”
“Appreciate it.”
You could only manage flying once or twice a year, otherwise? You could handle not seeing Tony for a few days. In fact, more times than not you could use it.
“Aside that, it has been a hell of a day. Meet you in bed?”
“Sure thing.”
With that and a kiss on the cheek, he went off to the bathroom.
You headed to the bedroom, and a few minutes later Tony joined you, already stripped to his slacks.
“God you look sexy when you do that.” He murmured, pulling off his socks and getting on the bed next to you.
“I’m not doing anything,”
“Exactly. You don’t need to.”
He tugged off what little you were wearing, situating himself between your legs.
“You gotta shave if I’m gonna do this.” He blew a tuft of hair off his forehead.
“You offered.”
“As if I’m going to pass it up, please. Waiter? There’s a hair in my meal.” He spat, picking at his tongue, making you giggle.
He smiled. finished undressing and crawled up to kiss you, pulling you down by the waist off the headboard to on your back in the pillows.
You stared ahead, brow drawn as he pulled your leg up over his shoulder.
“Jesus that feels like coming home.” He huffed.
“Tony?”
“Yeah?”
“Why haven’t I gotten pregnant yet?” He slowed, giving you a look.
“Well I wouldn’t know. Hormones, cycles, the whole thing‘s finicky, never really made sense of it myself.”
”Tony.” You voiced with a groan, scrunching your nose.
“You want me to stop right now and answer?”
“No, I just– I’m serious.”
“So am I. I don’t know.”
You sat up on your elbows, and Tony sighed, dropping your leg and sitting back. “Think maybe we should try something different?” You said.
“Like what?”
“You know.”
He sucked in a breath through his teeth. “Not to be possessive, or whatever it’s called now, but I really don’t like to share.”
“Oh Jesus, Tony, no! I mean like artificial insemination, IVF, you know, that kind of thing.”
“Thank god. Though I was afraid you meant that.” He sighed, resting on his haunches. “Frick.”
“You don’t want to?”
“It’s not that I don’t want to…” he scratched his chin. “Actually, yes it is. I don’t want to. Scoot.”
You moved over so he could pull his legs out from under him and climb up next to you, pushing the covers out of the way, gesturing for you.
You laid back into his arms.
“No, we’ll keep trying. It’ll sort itself out, I’m sure.”
“Any particular reason?”
“Do we have to get into it? I just don’t want to.”
“All right then.” You leaned up and kissed him, pulling him against you.
You liked Tony because you hadn’t known who he was when you met him. He was stranded from some failed scheduling, and in the backseat of a ride share he’d asked to borrow your phone like any other person would.
“Really, just one call and I’ll give it right back.”
You'd rolled your eyes, but handed it over. “You should put your seatbelt on.” You had said.
“I’m like ten minutes from where I’m going, this guy doesn’t care.”
And then when he gave it back to you, you had found his number in it.
You’d called him the next day, of course, with full intent to tell him to buzz off, only to be stunned into intrigue.
“Great. Now I have yours.” Had been all he said before hanging up.
After that, you texted near daily. He wasn’t always the greatest at responding, so you preferred video calls. It was like that for months before you finally went out. You played hard to get, right up until he got you.
You had told him it was on one condition, that he wouldn’t chew you up and spit you out like he did to supermodels and reporters, or say, his secretary.
That if you were going to date him, and really date him, that he’d have to be all in, it was you or bust; you weren’t going to let him play you into something just for it to fall through.
Not when you knew he was the only one for you.
He’d only said one thing to that: “Done.”
And two weeks later he proposed to you on live television.
The media still didn’t believe, no matter how many times Tony said you were special, that you were going to last.
Stuff spread fast as soon as you were seen in public together, journalists certain you were his latest in a long line of heartless flings.
So you agreed to help him change that.
“Go easy on her, yeah? She’s not used to television, but it's cool, because she agreed to be here with me, and honestly that’s enough work in a relationship on its own, I think she’s clear for the year.” Watching Tony beam on camera, every ounce of charm working, was worth it on its own.
“Well we’ve got some great stuff planned for tonight, so don’t you worry.”
You smiled, seated on that couch next to him in front of a whole studio audience and probably millions of viewers, because although you felt out of place, and a little in over your head, Tony kept his hand on yours damn near the entire time.
Despite being asked a few questions, Tony answered most of them for you, dismissing any negative rhetoric coming your way, which you appreciated, because you could hardly believe the audacity of some of the things they were saying.
You wouldn’t have agreed to do it if Tony hadn’t let you pick your own outfit, a loose, patterned jumpsuit, and made sure you didn’t have to wear any makeup that you didn’t usually.
You got to show off when they asked about it, giving a spin Tony stayed holding your hand through, to lots of claps and applause, which would’ve been your highlight of the night if not for what came right after.
“Well might I just say I think I speak for everyone when I say you look amazing tonight,” the interviewer complimented a little too gushingly, eyeing you.
“Hey, easy. I am taken.” You spoke up, smiling thinly.
“Fiery; I like it. Where’s he been keeping you!”
“Wherever she pleases,” Tony said. “As it turns out, because I don’t keep her.”
“So, last question, have you thought about settling down?” The interviewer pivoted, letting you breathe easier, not wanting but more than willing to make a scene over anything more.
“Thought about? Oh yeah.” Tony said. “We’re pretty inseparable as it is. I don’t go a day without talking to her.” He glanced at you, brown eyes shining. “We’ve discussed it a little. Playfully, mostly. I don’t doubt why she doesn’t always take me seriously.”
“Does marriage scare you?” The interviewer asked.
“Terrifies, if I’m honest. But actually, it’s more the asking, you know, the hardest part is deciding when is a good time.”
You straightened your back, alert as Tony leaned back to dig around in the pocket of his suit before standing, giving you a nod as you stared at him with wide eyes, getting down on one knee.
You could feel how red your face must’ve been with all the cameras on you.
“You’d make me the happiest man on Earth if you said yes.”
The interview had been to announce you were together, among other things, after months of tabloids and speculation, to clear things up. Though the way Tony had phrased it beforehand made it all make a lot more sense.
“I just wanna let the world know I’ve met someone really special, and I’ve changed. I want to show them.” He adjusted your mic backstages behind the tech’s back, placing his hands on your upper arms.
“Because things are gonna change.”
The interview blew up, and pictures of your red, tear stained, smiling face as Tony hugged you, engagement ring held up, displayed proudly on your hand, were in articles and magazines the world over.
All the attention was a little overwhelming, but you were the most thrilled you had ever been in your life to be engaged to Tony Stark.
He’d asked you after, on the way home, if it was too much, but you assured him it was perfect.
“I thought about it immediately when I was asked to do the interview, and I knew if I didn’t do it then I was going to put it off. So I’m, how you say…”
“Sorry?”
“That.” You gave him an expectant eyebrow raise.
“I’m… sorry if I made you uncomfortable, but you don’t deserve that, being strung out.”
“It was very you. I still can’t believe I didn’t see it coming, I was so nervous.”
“I saw that, I was afraid you’d faint.”
“Oh lord, don’t even say that!” You laughed, giving him a shove.
“It’s fine, I would’ve caught you.” He kissed your ear, giving it a tug with his teeth before you threw your arms over his shoulders and pushed him into a breathless kiss.
You first started trying for a baby four months after the wedding.
“Hey, be here when we’re done, yeah? It’s gonna be a long night. You get in there, get yourself a drink, enjoy.” Tony dismissed the cab driver with a tip.
“I cannot stand when they talk. Tell me again why we couldn’t get a limo?” You were fidgeting, not because of nerves, but excitement.
“Whatcha smilin’ about? It’s just an action flick, probably not even good.” You would forever commend Tony on his ability to read a room, mood, or vibe without seeming to even look. Especially when it came to you.
“I was going to tell you when we got home tonight.”
“Tell me…?” He tilted his head at you, doing that thing with his lips that never failed to make your chest tight. “We’re not getting back till late, come on.” He urged.
“You know we were talking last month, and I– I took it to heart.”
“Oh?”
You took a deep breath. “I stopped taking my birth control yesterday.”
His eyes lit up. “You serious?”
“I think I’m ready.” You nodded.
He all but tackled you in the backseat of that cab, littering your jaw in kisses before moving down to your cleavage, making you yelp.
“It’s not going to work yet!” You laughed.
“Doesn’t mean I can’t try. Celebratory sex, you, me, now.”
“Tony…! We’ve got a premiere!”
He brought up his watch, squinting.
“I’ve got ten minutes and a hard-on, seriously, they’re still playing ads, we won’t miss a thing. And ‘sides, I gotta practice dropping my pullout game.”
“You are unbelievable.”
“Won’t make a mess, swear it.”
“God I love you.” You gripped his lapel, pulling him into a kiss.
Having straightened out your two-piece and fixed Tony’s hair, grinning when he gave your ass a more than friendly pat, you started the couple blocks to the theater.
“Right, let’s hurry.” You crossed the street, close by his side.
“You really cut it close.” You shook your head at him, double checking your clothes.
“Completely worth it. Do it again in a heartbeat.”
You swore you always felt like a teenager with their first crush around him, the way he looked at you, always excited you were in the room.
He took your hand, letting his fingers thread with yours.
“hey so, I promise I’m gonna be a better dad than mine was. I know I’m not great, but… I promise I’m gonna be decent.”
“You’re already half there.” You squeezed his hand, giving him a nudge.
“You think so?”
“I wouldn’t have married you otherwise.”
He kissed the crown of your head, before lights and cameras surrounded you both on the carpet.
But not everything had been roses.
A few months after that, you’d both been in an accident.
Tony had been driving, when a tire blew along a turn, sending the car over the side of the highway into the bushes.
He'd gone through the windshield, hitting the hood and landing a few feet in front of the car in the dirt.
You scrambled to unfasten your seatbelt, stumbling dazedly out the passenger door onto your hands, shaking it off and rushing to Tony.
“Oh my god, Tony!” Relief washed over you as he groaned when you turned him over.
“Ow .”
“Are you hurt?”
“Jesus, duh.” He felt his face and chest, blinking through the bleary vision.
“Just my head, I think, but holy shit.”
You helped him up into the backseat, pulling out your phone and dialing 911.
“I’m calling an ambulance.”
You grabbed Tony’s handkerchief for the bleeding from his head, telling the operator where you were and what happened, as well as your husband’s condition.
“Right, they’re on their way. Don’t lean back, sit up.”
”We should try IVF.”
“What?”
“You mentioned it, and I know I said I was against it, but I think we need to look into it.”
“Tony we were just in a car crash–”
“Yeah and I really put something into perspective for me. I really don’t want to die before we manage to conceive.”
“That’s what you were thinking about?” You couldn’t help but laugh under your breath.
“Deadass, sweetie. Imagine how ridiculous it would be if we ended up childless at like fifty because I was too worried about being seen as inadequate.”
“You’re kidding me. That’s why you didn’t want to?”
“Come on. It should be obvious. I spent years sleeping around, making my name synonymous with sex, and I can’t even get my wife pregnant? I would never live that down.”
“Hey, it was not for lack of trying.”
“Don’t I know it.” He huffed, wincing as you checked where you’d been staunching his head.
“I want kids with you.” He said. “And I mean that.”
“Yeah, okay.” You nodded.
“Okay? Okay.”
A half hour or so later the ambulance showed up, and you spent the rest of the evening getting Tony stitches.
He’d been lucky a concussion and a couple fractured ribs was all he got off with, and he wouldn’t have even gotten that if he’d been wearing a seatbelt.
“I guess there’s something to be said for getting it over with.” Back in the present, Tony was still talking himself into the news.
“What do I know, maybe it’s incredibly efficient.” He sighed. “How many did you want again?”
“Like, two?” You threw out.
“Surprise, bonus for ya.” He gestured like he was pulling a slot machine. “You struck a three for one, cash-in is in eight months. Hope you know this is your early birthday gift. Christmas too.”
“That’s a relief.” You shook your head, remembering the last time Tony tried to get you something, and just how much of a disaster it was.
“Don’t make fun of me, I’m in a very vulnerable place right now.” He teased, but you could tell there was some seriousness behind it.
“Three kids…” he exhaled a drawn out breath.
“You’re gonna do great.” You said.
“I am? I should be the one telling you. It is safe, correct?” He addressed the doctor.
“We’ll have to see how the pregnancy develops, twins and triplets are almost always born premature, which adds risk to any delivery.”
“And they are?” The doctor gave him a confused look.
“Boys? Girls? Other? All of the above?”
“It’s too early to tell.”
“Of course. What was I thinking. Right, well, thanks for the news.”
He was quiet as you wrapped up, getting cleaned up, and printed off your pictures—three little fuzzy black and white shapes.
“You good?” You asked out in the hall, on your way to the rear exit, noticing how out of it Tony looked.
“I’m gonna need to think about it. I’m kinda tingly in the fingers, my heart’s racing, I think I’m still in denial.”
As you approached the glass door, Tony stopped you with an arm, biting his lip.
“Shit.”
You followed his gaze to the moderately sized crowd outside, feeling your heart sink.
“Oh goddamnit.”
“Don’t people have anything better to do with their lives?” Tony muttered.
“How. We took surface roads and parked behind the hospital!” You groaned.
“Where there's a me there’s a camera hoping to catch something. Car’s close, yeah?” He asked.
“Yeah.”
“Right. Deep breath.”
He tugged off his jacket, covering you as you made your way to the car, ducking you inside while camera flashes snapped from every direction.
“Mister Stark! Mister Stark! Are you currently going through IVF treatment?”
“Is your wife expecting?”
“Sir, is it true you’re going to be a father soon?”
“Fine, you might as well know now.” He caught your eye through the gap of the tinted car window, and you furrowed your brow.
“My wife and I are expecting. We’re having triplets.” He said.
“And that’s a you get.”
You moved over as he opened the door and got in the seat beside you, quickly shutting it behind him.
“I can’t believe you just did that.”
“Yeah, believe it, before I change my mind.”
“You can’t take it back now!”
“Well yeah, but if I could, you would have to accept that I wouldn’t, unless I changed my mind, or you really wanted me to, in which case I’d figure it out.”
“What?”
“Nevermind.” He rolled up his window the rest of the way, drowning out the paparazzi still clamoring for his attention outside.
“Hey,” you put your hand on his thigh. “Thank you, Tony.”
“I’m not the one who’s going to have three human beings inside her, and not in a fun way. Jesus, you’re going to get huge.” He looked down at your stomach, then back up into your eyes.
“You’re having triplets?” Happy exclaimed from the front seat.
“Christ, Happy, you are not a part of this conversation.” Tony gave a dramatic slump against his headrest, throwing his hand up. “Is privacy dead!”
“Yes, we’re having triplets.” You confirmed with a smile.
Tony turned back to you. “But you are welcome. My sperm and all. Sorry I couldn’t get it the old fashioned way.”
“I am not complaining.”
Happy started the car.
“Seatbelt,” you gave Tony's arm a tap with the back of your hand, and he quickly buckled himself in, kissing his fingers as you drove off.
“What’s that for?” You asked.
“I’m kissing my free time goodbye.” He exhaled heavily.
“Half the house is going to be kids’ stuff, isn’t it?”
“Half the house is going to be kids’ stuff.” You chuckled.
“Not the basement.”
“Basement can stay.” You assured him.
“I’m gonna have to uninstall the fountain, aren’t I? It’s just not safe.”
“I wasn’t gonna say it.”
“Holy shit, what are we gonna name them!” He interjected,, his expression somewhere between panicked and elated.
“‘Cause all I’ve only got Maria. That’s it. Does first to pop out get priority, or…?” He showed his teeth, gesturing. “There’s gotta be at least one girl out of three, right?”
“Actually, I was thinking Virginia for a girl.”
“That’s funny.“ He deadpanned.
“She’s been a big help.” You shrugged.
“You got me laughing.” He shook his head.
“But seriously. I’m typically great at naming things, but, people who can get mad at me later– not to mention something I’m gonna have to call out across the house only about three million times, I’m not so sure if I want that to be my mom’s name.”
“We’ll figure it out.” You ran a hand through where his hair had shuck loose to hang in his eyes, kissing his cheek.
It was wild to think less than a two years ago you’d met him for the very first time, and now you were closer to him than anyone, married and having kids.
“Hey Happy, closest drive through with ice cream?” Tony leaned forward to ask.
“You know this woman had ice cream every day while she was pregnant, and apparently, full fat ice cream has like fourteen grams of protein per cup? It’s nuts. More if you add nuts now I think about it. That’s not a bad idea. Butter pecan?”
“Ice cream sounds great right now.”
“I’m not suggesting you do that, but as far as becoming a picky eater goes… not the worst idea.”
You pulled through a Dairy Queen, getting two butter pecan ice creams.
Tony pulled out his phone and held up his spoon, clinking it with yours.
“To becoming parents.” He toasted, kissing a bit of pecan off your upper lip, snapping a picture of you both as you laughed.

Having all that time is important to let the characters be to show their development and really showing the audience who these characters are.
Avatar the Last Airbender has the time to let the characters sit back and relax, and with that, the plots have the time to take deeper looks into their characters. Something that is so important to ATLA is that the main characters are children. They may have had the weight of the world placed on their shoulders and been forced to act grown-up, but they are still children, and they have the emotional responses that someone that age is going to have. Having the time to show the characters learn and grow, and seeing them being able to step up to the role rather than the plot just forcing them to do the thing the plot needs them to do.
There is time given to not just the worldbuilding but to humanizing the nations. It shows just regular people living their lives and how the war has affected them. It's just revealed that some parts of the earth kingdom living peacefully, and some are under threat or occupation. Because it gives likable characters the audiences can sympathize with the audiences can gather why war is bad. Even shows how the Fire Nation is not made up of purely bad people, they are just people who have been propagandized and like the other two nations there are good and bad people.
The Beach is such an impotent episode for showing the fire nation's kids emotional stats and developing what will lead to Zuko's eventual turn. But the only reason an episode like that can happen is because there is time for it to happen. There is enough room for there to be an episode where the characters go to the beach, can't have in the netflix show.
While it's divisive whether the netflix Atla is good or bad, basically all the criticisms derive from the story needing to be compressed. Removing or changing aspects from characters, dropping characters entirely and constant exposition in every episode. It does sound like for a lot of people it was enjoyable, but it always sounds like the changes that upset people are always because they needed to make the plot go quicker.
Instead of designated filler episodes we now have kind a filler ... everything Everything is full od padding that somehow manages to do nothing to help us get to know the characters
Now that everything has to be exposition and priority of the characters have to be pushing the plot forward it now feels like a waste of time when there are moments where characters are just talking, because nothing feels like it's being accomplished.
Now with these writers and how proud they are of themselves and don't expect anything truly good from them even if they were given more, but there is a thing in the first season I feel like it need time to actually work.
Mobius calling Loki a "crappy friend" and acting betrayed comes off as jarring if you watch the show as a whole. Because at what point was a friendship supposed to happen? Loki showed no enthusiasm being in the TVA and voiced open skepticism with their legitimacy, and in-turn Loki is given no respect and is treated as thoroughly untrustworthy. Was Pompeii it, was that supposed to be the friendship moment? Loki was trying to prove his theory and had no plans to hurt Mobius, they are best friends now.
Again, with these writers who think they're genuinely writing Mobius as nice, even though everything he says is incredible backhanded, I don't think more time would have improved things. But it does feel like something that needed more time. As I mentioned in the tags Grant Ward from AoS, he spends so much time protecting them, talking and snarking, training Sky and not knowing how the hologram display works with Coulson you don't expect he's going to be evil,
Back when more shows were longer and there were episodes that were about spending time with the characters and not some over arching plot. Just having some fun
I miss filler episodes, filler is important even when it doesn't service "The Plot" because it helps the audience become attached to the characters and settings. Like, it establishes a vibe and when you have that is actually makes the twists and turns feel impactful.

Dean had no idea where this belief was coming from, much like the one before it, when in reality Sam couldn’t have been more off. The very concept, especially the part about him being enough for their dad, had him scoffing before Sam was even finished speaking. And he was the one claiming not to be stupid nor blind. But then there came a sort of backhanded slap when Sam addressed why he was a disappointment in their father’s eyes, and whatever had been boiling in Dean’s throat died before it could form wholly.
Dean quickly looked away from his brother then, lowering his gaze to the grassy ground so as not to be easily read. He knew the role he had played whilst growing up, the good soldier to a vindictive dictator, but despite his displayed loyalty and respect– Dean always knew John preferred Sam over him. Sam, he saw as a son and tried to treat him as such; him– well. He was whatever John needed him to be. Not exactly fair, but Dean decided early on to accept that position and try to live up to his father’s expectations. Unfortunately, he never could.
Tumblr media
“Sam–” He looked back up finally. “I know you’ve felt like an outcast in this family, not wanting to be stuck in this life… An’ when you decided to go to college, Dad didn’t exactly make an effort t’convince you otherwise. But– You’ve always been a Winchester.” Dean took a breath, looking off to the side momentarily before returning. “Yeah, you might’ve disappointed him from time to time, but you were never a disappointment. Even after you left…” He shook his head, thinking about how deep miscommunication ran in their family because no one ever said what they felt. Kinda like how tonight would have gone had Sam not finally admitted to what was bothering him. “As far as you an’ me go– If either of us is a burden, it’s me. I’m the one who dragged you back in.” He shrugged noncommittally. “’Cause I didn’t want to go at it alone.”
Tumblr media
“Yeah,” he swallowed hard, sniffed at the remaining emotion threatening to escape again. His tongue pressed into his cheek and moved around for a minute while he worked out what to say in response. Of course, Dean had taken hold of what was said and turned it completely around, now claiming that it was him that was the burden in their dynamic. He looked up sharply at that, brow furrowing as he was trying to decide if he had heard correctly.
“You didn’t–” he sighed, shaking his head before taking in a deep breath the came out in a bitter laugh. “Whether you’d shown up at my place that night or not, Jess would’ve ended up dead and I would’ve– really, if not for you, who knows where I would’ve ended up? One of Azazel’s soldiers, or dead, probably.” He scoffed, biting his bottom lip as he looked back up to the night sky.
That alone should have been enough to prove the point he’d been trying to convey with this whole mess of a conversation. Nightmare aside, because at this point the line between dream and reality was blurred, the fact that if Dean hadn’t shown up needing help to find Dad that night he wouldn’t be–
Tumblr media
“You think you ruined my life or whatever that night, but you saved my life. And you’ve been doing it over and over again ever since. Don’t you get tired of it? Of having to always keep one eye on me, because ‘Sam’s never going to be good enough to survive on his own’?”
Was it obvious yet, the deeply-rooted father issues? Not just on his end, but his brother’s as well? On some level, now that they were both grown and gained distance from the situation, they understood why John had acted the way he had with them; while on others... Well, clearly, there was some trauma that they just would have to carry for the rest of their lives. After all, it is what ultimately shaped them into the men they were today. For better or worse...    Of course, there was only so much Dean could say in lieu of their now deceased parent, but he knew in his heart that Sam had never been a failure to him. John just...sometimes lost sight of the fact that he was their dad and not just their drill sergeant. Thus, the root-cause of their poor communication.
Dean, however, could convey his side and argued that it wasn’t Sam who was the burden between the two but himself. A fact he had always known; not just in their relationship, either, but it was theirs that he would sometimes beat himself up over. If he had only had left him at college... How much life had he robbed him of?
Tumblr media
Just as he had turned the tables, he knew, even without looking at him, that Sam would try to take them back, but what he hadn’t expected was for him to laugh. Of course, it hadn’t been out of humor (well, maybe dark humor), but it still drew Dean’s confused gaze all the same, meeting Sam’s.
Listening to his response forced him to view things from his perspective, and it became clear very quickly that he fully believed that he had not stolen but saved his life. Somewhere, at some time or another, Sam had looked back and reached the conclusion that his attempt to be ‘normal’ would have eventually imploded, with or without Dean’s help, and that he would have ended up in a much worse position than he was now had Dean not interfered.
Tumblr media
Up until now, Dean hadn’t factored in the demon blood and how differently that shit with Azazel could have gone down, and then factoring in the domino effect-- His head started to hurt. But he really couldn’t focus on that right then because his brother had begun spiraling again. “That’s bullshit, Sam, an’ you know it,” Dean said firmly with a matching expression, having raised his voice some. “I have never once looked at you an’ thought that.--I watch you ‘cause that’s my job. ‘Cause without you, I’m...” Emotion hit him then, causing him to clamp his jaw as he fought to swallow it all down. Once he felt like he had a handle on it, he looked back at Sam.
Tumblr media
“Sammy, just listen t’me, alright?” His tone had reverted back, now more gentle as he stared at Sam with a weary, pleading expression. “You could never be my burden. I don’t--” Exist without you. “I need you, Man. By my side, fightin’ the good fight. ‘Cause if you’re not...well...I guess I quit.”

NOT STAN. That's my beta Dipper HAHEHHEE. My notes are just emphasizing how similar they look. Me, earlier today, drawing beta Dipper: "STAN PINES ?! 😨😮😮😨😨😨"
Perhaps. Gay people. I am thinking about it really hard fr
#sometimes writing a story is toying with different dynamics and being like “auughh i LOVE this plotline but it'd go completely against -#- everything else in the whole story 😭“ so I gotta kill my darlings.#and I don't mean “killing off a character”#i mean “killing off this cool ass dynamic that sounds awesome but may not fit the story I'm trying to tell”#anyway#gay people... perhaps#do you see the amazing dynamic these two would have in the context of the story I'm making ??? no you don't#because i haven't told you anything about my story LMAO AHDHABHAHAHR#but point is: i love them#god#toxic yaoi is real#they've got the situationship that can almost rival whatever the hell Stanford Pines had going on (unfortunately they do not beat him)#they've got a dynamic that makes others think they don't care about eachother at all. that they hate eachother and that's all#and they DID hate eachother for most of their time together but after a bunch of years spent with no one else to rely on except eachother?#maybe you DO hate them still. but you can't deny the bond you share because the only other person in the world who GETS IT is him#you've seen him at his best and worst. you've driven him to the brink of insanity. you've taken everything from him#and yet you cuddle when the night is cold and it's so so lonely outside#you know how he likes his pancakes. how he'd rather cut his hair off than brush it. how he's entranced by the stars he never saw so clearly#you recognize when he's about to have a panic attack. you sit with him til he calms down. you hold hands and miss your families together#and you know he's the toughest person you know. so the occasional bang sessions? oh; those are NOT gentle#there's nothing more than a single safeword they never used more than once. because they've been together for so long and they know how far-#-they can push until it becomes too much. but to be gentle? to be soft? to a person who has grown so used to dodging your knives?#that is a whole entire INSULT !!! how DARE you treat me like I'm fragile NOW after we spent our lives on opposite sides of a battlefield?#how DARE you be gentle to me now after you ripped open my guts and shoved salt and dirt inside?#you know how much i can handle and you know I've always loved the thrill#so don't you dare make this any less of a battle unless you want me to bash your head in with a hammer. moron#the real valenpines dynamic i stg. i love them so much you don't understand#i can't believe I'm gonna have to sacrifice this dynamic#robbie valentino#dipper pines
