I wanna clarify before I say anything too negative that I really don’t hate heartstopper as a show, I like how it deals with mental health conversations and gives a wide range of representation, and I’m not trying to judge anyone that does find joy in it or see themselves in Isaac’s character.

But for me, the rep in season two and three felt a bit immature? Not exactly the right word, but I still can’t find the one I’m looking for. I just finished season three today, and couldn’t help but notice that in so many of the scenes involving Isaac’s aromanticism and asexuality, he seemed to use it as almost an accusation against his friends. Specifically with the scene when they’re at the aquarium and someone goes “what if the fish were gay haha” and he says something like “well what if the fish didn’t like anyone and didn’t want to hear about their friends’ magical romantic relationships anymore?”. To me this just feels really rude and self-centered, even understanding the point he’s trying to make (Elle and Tao being too dependent on each other).

The way this scene is written (and the way everyone apologizes to him immediately afterwards), he doesn’t come across as a concerned friend or someone trying to communicate his feelings, it just feels like he’s taking his loneliness and insecurities out on his friends rather than having a conversation about how he’s feeling. I think this definitely could’ve happened at the movie night, but instead Isaac just left without saying anything.

These insecurities are valid, especially when you’re young and trying to figure yourself out. I’ve been in the same position as Isaac and felt the same kind of things! And I think younger me would be really validated by Isaac’s character. But if you’re not able to move past that and communicate with your friends about how you’re feeling and how they’re making you feel, then you can’t blame that on them. People in romantic relationships will sometimes spend more time with their partners than their friends, and this isn’t inherently bad. It’s only unhealthy when it gets to the point of dependency, which is when you step in (respectfully! privately!) and have a conversation with them.

A lot of people are talking about how they felt validated by his friends apologizing to him after this scene, but I just can’t see why they were supposed to apologize for something that 1) isn’t their fault and 2) Isaac never communicated.

Sorry if this sounds really aggressive or anything, genuinely don’t mean to be! Totally understand everyone has a different perspective, but there’s my 2 cents as an aroace person :)

Tao's cooking struggle aside, I love how colour-coordinated this shot is, the walls and the lamp, Tao's apron, Yan's shirt, the accents of Elle's dress, they're really leaning into the pink and teal:

I get it might be a comfort thing, but I would personally feel like that friend wasn't engaged with me if during every one of our hang-outs they were reading. So like, complaining that Tao cares too much about his girlfriend when he's still there, spending time with you, seems harsh. HOWEVER, dick move from Tao, who already told you he didn't like James back

speaking of the characters!! not specifically just about volume 5 but i need to gush for a second. charlie is just so incredibly relatable for me. his struggles feel so personal and intimate it can be hard to read but i just feel so so so seen by him. the way nick loves and cares about him is almost healing for me, weirdly enough. the entire friend group and how much they truly care so deeply for each person has healed a piece of me that has felt broken for a long time. they’re not even a real friend group but they really feel like my friends.

tao and elle once again being the most lovely supportive besties and are also so in love!!! tara and elle are such great supports for nick it’s so sweet to watch. and oh my little baby aled!!!!! i missed my boy so much!!! with him not being in the show i feel like i’ve neglected my appreciation for him as a character but i truly adore him so much and i was so happy to see him more in this volume!

tori!!!!!!! michael!!!!!!! tori and michael not being straight!!!!! oh my god!!!!!! ok sorry this was the one page i had seen on tumblr when the webtoon came out and everyone was freaking tf out haha this makes me so incredibly happy! tori is my favourite character forever and im so happy to see her and michael progressing and growing in this. also every interaction of tori and charlie makes me cry :)

the teachers are also just so incredibly sweet and really thriving and i love that for them!! i still think charlie’s mom hardcore sucks though sry. his dad is ok but like sir please tell your wife to chill more.

overall, shocker it was a 5 star read for me! alice never misses and i would die for these characters ✨

Harry, you little -- dumbass..  I have never understood why people make fun of someone’s feelings/crush on someone. Recently, I watched this movie called A Whisker Away (you can catch it on Netflix. Lovely animation and a sweet story) and **spoilers ahead** it had a scene where a classmate of the female lead snatched her letter (which she’d written for her crush) and read it out loud in front of the whole class, including her crush and kept laughing in between. It was truly nerve wracking and painful to watch it. The female lead says in a broken voice to not “make fun of her feelings.” And that truly was heartbreaking. You could see the subtle way the insolent boy reacted to her words (he must’ve felt ashamed) but still went on to ask the male lead (the crush) how he’d respond to her confession. **spoiler ended**

Anyway, that scene reminded me how fucking cruel people can be when they don’t have anyone to teach them compassion and kindness.

And this scene where Harry is making fun of Charlie’s supposed crush on Nick is disgusting. It makes it even worse because he assumes that everyone will laugh, nod and agree with him about how pitiful Charlie is just because he’s gay. I am furious!

Well, that was valiant of Nick and truly remarkable of him to walk out from there. We shouldn’t tolerate such disgusting things either, guys. Harry must’ve been feeling like he’s on a pedestal, thinking he’s joking while he really was being downright cruel.

Onto lighter matters, it’s so sweet to see this bond between Tao and Elle. (somebody give me tissues *tearing up*) I agree with Elle.

Considering the title of the episode I thought (yes, wishful thinking *rolling my eyes*) that maybe Charlie and Nick might share a kiss, no matter how small, doesn’t have to be on the lips either. I’m even more happy to see Tara and Darcy embracing the party and finally feeling free enough to share a kiss here, among the crowds! Oh god! It was so utterly sweet too! 

Also Nick witnessed that moment and felt happy and a sort of admiration for them showed how maybe it’s not too bad to discover and embrace new things about himself.

Yes! Nick found Charlie finally! Ohohoho.. You know the minute Charlie mentioned Ben, you can see Nick’s face fall. Like he is scared that Charlie will slip away. Ahhhhhhhhh..

First of all, I loved how Nick is so vulnerable and open with Charlie and the questions leading up to the kiss were so soft spoken and even more softly answered. And the kiss! Sweet lord, I held my breath all through it, because this nasty part of my brain kept saying someone will interrupt this beautiful moment and ruin it with their disgusting opinions and whatever reactions and Charlie’s heart will be broken and Nick will heartbroken too and then there will be a much bigger chasm for the both of them to find their way back to each other!

Thankfully, whatever I expected didn’t happen and I was so glad that they kissed again! Their little pinkies intertwining was such a small detail but a meaningful one! And Nick went on to hold Charlie’s hand and I felt my heart soar at that!

BUT! Harry literally broke the trance. That little shit!

God, the way Nick got up as if he was burned or afraid of being walked in on, gave my second hand flashbacks of Charlie sort of going through the same with Ben. Ugh... This fear has got to stop!

Episode Two: Crush

My brain shutdown the moment Charlie said “bisexual people exist”.

I had to watch the episode again immediately because, frankly, shows (and media in general) saying bisexual is rare enough.

Let alone having a gay character say it. If a media ever dares say bisexual, it’s usually the bisexual character. Followed immediately by disbelief or questions by other characters. So I can’t give you initial thoughts because of the said-brain shutting down thing. So just have random shit, I guess. 

Charlie really said Bi Rights and I was already in “Precious Bean Protect” mode.  And my brain was not prepared to deal with it.

Also like the way it was done that Charlie made sure to shut down his friends’ stereotyping and bi-erasure. 

“I know he’s straight, he told me,” meanwhile Nick Bi-Panicking over the other side of the plot. 

This isn’t a dig at Charlie. He’s literally just going by Nick’s text-agreement which is already like way ahead of his friends. 

Pfft like his running. 

I’m not apologizing for that very forced simile. 

- Well, opening scene is terrifying and sad. Thanks Heartstopper. 

- DOGGIE!

- Pour one out of Nellie. Nick laughed at an unfunny post because his crush posted it and Nellie had to witness it. Nellie proving to be a good doggie 100/100.

Show does not cut to Nick after Charlie sends his ‘sneaky’ (And cringe but boy is fourteen, he’s allowed to be cringe) “thanks for being my supportive straight friend haha” text. Interesting. 

- Charlie being bold and sending a red heart. 

- And Nick’s smile at the heart. Also knowing Nellie is supposed to be eleven years old, she is definitely leaving a giant drool patch on Nick’s leg. 

- Ah so Charlie’s the person who does ask for advice but wants a certain answer instead of actual advice. 

- omg I never noticed Ajayi’s little smile as Charlie leaves the room. 

- “My parents don’t like animals,” - Charlie. So Charlie’s parents have no taste. 

- Aww Nick nearly said “you look great”. 

- Nick has not heard Charlie play the drums at this point but he’s crushing so bad he’s like “you’re good at drums” to Charlie. 

- Pour another out for Nellie who was used to get Nick’s crush over to his house. Nellie, best wingdog 100/100. 

- Snow-scene is Peak Romance Trope. The only time it is acceptable to leave a Snow-scene out of your romance if it is set in an area that never snows. 

- pfft Charlie is already mama-approved by Sarah. 

- Awww Nick was going to ask Charlie to his house again.  Also love the detail that apparently Nick couldn’t say night to Charlie through their texts and kept the chat going.

- Pffft Tao trying to pretend what is happening in rugby is me. I tried, I just can’t get it. 

- Damn it Tao. Stop getting your opinions from the grapevine. They are always years out of date. And stop making Charlie second-guess himself, he is reading right. 

- Tao “you shouldn’t talk to the rugby lads” Xu is apparently on good enough terms with one to slide up to them and ask if Nick is interested in anyone. Charlie, stop listening to Tao. 

Aww, Charlie’s little face. NO, CHARLIE YOU WERE READING THE ROOM RIGHT! STOP TRUSTING TAO ON THIS! LOOK, NICK SPECIFICALLY YELLED OUT TO WAVE AT YOU IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FUCKING FIELD!

Also Tao sees that and is still trusting Otis’s grapevine gossip.  

“confirmed by multiple sources,” - Tao about Nick’s supposed crush on Tara. Tao, your sources suck and are the equivalent of webmd. Nellie would like a word with you Tao. Nellie was not used as a ploy to invite Charlie to Nick’s house only for you to insist that Nick has a crush on someone other than Charlie. 

- “He’s the straightest person I’ve ever seen,” - Elle. Needs to see her optometrist again. Charlie, no, sweetie. You’re not being an idiot. STOP LISTENING TO YOUR FRIENDS! 

- And now Charlie is in his head because his friends are stereotyping and listening to romance-equivalent of webmd. Great. 

- Aww, Nick practically lit up when Charlie invited him over. 

- Tara and Darcy laughing at the boyfriend questions in their language class. Also Tara’s “that’s the gayest excuse I’ve ever heard!” when Elle saw them holding hands. 

- Charlie Spring holding Nick’s hands to teach him the drums. Brave or Nick was just that terrible, Charlie’s nerves about being that close to his crush disappeared? I say brave. But I would find it funny if the real reason why Charlie just couldn’t stand Nick’s attempts to play the drums.

- Aww Nick’s bi crisis as he tries to hold Charlie’s hand twice. 

- Tori Appears and Calls It. I like to think she did not actually hear Nick’s “you look cuddly like that�� to Charlie and just witnessed the hug. Well for now, that is what I have decided. I might go back to the she def heard the cuddly-part. 

Also I know in the comics, Charlie said to Tori that Nick was straight and that was why Tori said she didn’t think Nick was straight. But I like to think show-wise, Tori just saw Nick interact with her brother once and said that with no other related conversations. 

- “What does it mean when Hot Straight Boy hugs you for like a full ten seconds,” It means he ain’t straight, Charlie. Stop listening to Tao. Tao is very bad at this.

- Tao “he was probably imagining you were Tara” Xu, Nellie would like multiple words with you! Next Season: Nellie starts an animal-human feud with Tao. 

- Charlie is brave. Nick is just a himbo. Buddy, why are you having your sexuality-crisis searches in a tab that will record your history? And why, in following episodes, are you listening to videos without earphones/headphones? Do you not have any? Is your room the attic? Is Nellie getting tired of your pining and sitting/laying on your earphones/headphones?

You can’t stop headcanoning that it’s the last one of those. 

- Tao and Elle both trying to convince Charlie that Nick is straight when this episode ends with Nick googling “am i gay?” is brilliant. Charlie, stop listening to your friends. They are terrible at this.

Also if you are genuinely googling “am i gay?”, there is a ninety-nine percent chance that you are not straight.
