I’m surprised I haven’t caved and done this yet, but I NEED to talk about how fucked up it is that ole Papa Ricky missed out on prime ace/aro representation via Leo Valdez in favor of? Ruining part of his character arc? Let’s get into it.

Essentially, Leo’s entire character is based off of the loser boy who relentlessly flirts with anything that moves because he’s desperate. We see this in almost every book until he starts to get serious, and of course when the Calypso plot line begins. IGNORING THAT ENTIRE SECTION OF THE BOOKS, and instead looking more closely towards the whole “seventh wheel” thing, I would very much like to point my gay little finger and declare Leo on the a-spec.

Leo as a character is very performative, and we see him taking the role of the comedian, or the resident funny guy along with his throwaway usefulness as the engineer and repairer. In his POV multiple times we see a deeper exploration to his thoughts and actions, while in everyone else’s eyes, he’s just annoying, funny, and hyperactive. While this is an entirely different post I should be making in the name of Leo Valdez and all of his quirks and flaws, I also think that this inherently plays into the loneliness and separation that we see over and over again casting him as the third/fifth/seventh wheel.

I think there’s also something very telling about that desperation. Besides Rick very quickly throwing him into a romance to solve most of his “problems”, a lot of the earlier books show him flirting and throwing himself at women, but there’s no SUBSTANCE to it. In my personal experience, and in something very often seen in the aro/Ace community, to fit into social norms, you often try to attach yourself quickly to people, or convince yourself and your peers that you are experiencing crushes/attraction for a way to fit in to conversation and convention. Unintentionally, Rick wrote this little playboy character who is SO EASILY read as queer, specifically ace/aro!!!!

While we can only give the books so much credit for diversity and representation (as they are written by a cishet white man well past his 30s), the way that Leo is written so stereotypically gives me FUEL to headcanon that he is better than written. I like to think of his third wheel era with Piper and Jason as a sort of PART 1 to this realization, and then PART 2 comes around with Hazel and Frank. There could have been so many silly interactions if he was actually pursued as a queer character, and I will forever rage because of the sloppily thrown labels after HoO with Nico’s coming out arc.

(Once again, big W for the representation being shown, but I do have some issues with the execution)

I just imagine Leo, confused, watching these relationships on the Argo II and taking notes about what romantic attraction looks like. He has messy notes scribbled on his palm like:

-Laughs at joke that is NOT funny because they are blinded by love???

-Look like idiots holding hands and staring into each others eyes

-‘I would die for you’ but in a sexy way (aka how to date in demigod 101)

-Whatever the fuck Percy and Annabeth have going on

Relationships, specifically romantic ones, seem to be the only way that Rick truly allows important interactions to happen. What happened to declaring your loyalty but in a platonic sense? What happened to fighting for the power of friendship? What happened to Grover?!?!!!

I also truly believe that there could have been an entirely new angle explored between Nico and Leo’s relationship, and how they could’ve become tentative friends after Leo comes back from the dead, especially after the death of Jason Grace. I see perfectly an interaction that would go something like:

Leo, approaching Nico wearily at the dining pavilion: hey man, how did you realize you were gay?

Nico, not paying much attention, absolutely destroying a bowl of cereal: didn’t like women, liked men

Leo, nodding seriously, knowing full well that he isn’t gay but also not straight: I see…

ADDITIONALLY there could have been such a fun friendship with Piper and Leo if Rick Riordan wasn’t a coward and actually gave Piper a character arc where she was established as queer instead of just sprinkling it in at random. Piper, as a daughter of Aphrodite, with that ‘love sense’, I truly believe they’re could have been such fun scenes such as:

Piper, suspicious that Leo isn’t straight: so…you have any crushes?

Leo, panicking because now he has to think of someone who could reasonably be seen as someone he was crushing on: uh, um, uh, what’re you? A cop???

Piper, getting literally no vibes of any attraction whatsoever from Leo, throwing her tf off: uh, maybe

This also leaves the very real, very hilarious question of what Leo would see if he ever met Aphrodite. As Jason sees a lot of Piper, and Percy sees basically just Annabeth, I think it would be interesting to have an internal dialogue of Leo meeting the goddess of love and having her features shift constantly to try and fit an impossible attraction by melding together traits that are stereotypically pretty or beautiful.

Not all of this was entirely coherent, but I have very strong feelings on this headcanon and I am HORRIBLE at articulating anything in a way that makes sense. Thank you for, once again, coming to my Teddy Talky.

just came up with a new concept: all children of zeus/jupiter have epilepsy. since they can control lightning and electrocute stuff and all that their own brains lightly electrocute themselves and they have seizures 😭 it can be any type: tonic, clonic, myoclonic, atonic, absence seizures, etc. also, just like irl, their physical state has an influence on it, so if they're anxious/stressed, not sleeping and/or eating properly they're more prone to have one

it's very dangerous to have seizures during missions/fights ofc, so they treat it with medication and can mostly if not completely stop having them!! yay

First of all, it's established early on that "demigods are usually tall" which makes reasonable sense and I think it's safe to assume they're not ALWAYS tall yk. but I also would like address the whole gods don't have genetics thing real quick:

most of the demigods we've seen look a lot like their biological mortal parent, and since gods don't have genetics, its safe to assume they're just a genetic shuffle of their mortal bio parent (I'm sure I'm not the only one who's wondered if that would make them a genetic clone of their mortal parent but I think it would be more like genetic siblings, the same genes just mixed up a little) that also means there's room for recessive genes or stuff that skipped a generation on the mortal parents side. Not directly relevant but my thoughts adjacent to the topic at hand.

Also while I'm sort of on the topic, we all know hair color (specifically blonde, brunette, red, and black hair) is a state of being and not what hair you're given at birth. I could never bleach my hair again and I'd still be blonde yk. That being said most children of athena are ABSOLUTELY bottle blonde, and whenever someone new shows up that's not already blonde they're like "hey do you wanna dye your hair"

Percy - 6'1, looks and acts like it too. Sally's family are average/tall ish so its not unreasonable, Sally is the shortest in her family at 5'4 (and Paul is around 5'9 if you were wondering)

Annabeth - 5'5.5 but says she's 5'6. Percy is the only one who knows and will not correct her ever. Her dad was 5'8 or so the last time he measured but he hasn't checked since before college and always forgets to check, kind of doesn't care that much. Her stepmother is 5'2 and she feels a little weird about being taller than her.

Grover - 5'6 - 5'8 depending on how stretched his legs are, a little bend at the hoof is comfier yk

Juniper - 5'6, the exact same height as her bush, her favorite trait about herself

Jason - 6'0 exactly, mans is already perfect and when people find out hes exactly 6' they get even more pissed. He looks exactly 6' too.

Thalia - was 5'4 now 5'5, seems taller. Big scary dog privelages. Gained an inch somehow after the tree incident. Freaked out /pos when she came to and saw lil Annabeth is now slightly taller than her. Annabeth feels weird about that too.

Piper - 5'7 with long ass legs. Has been BEGGED to model by so many agencies because she's physically incapable of taking a bad picture and looks gorgeous in everything (thanks aphrodite). Always refuses and has made it her mission to find the ugliest aesthetics but they always become microtrends because she's an involuntary nepotism baby. Her dad is 5'11 but his publicist will sue if you say he's shorter than 6'0.

Leo - 5'7 during the books, 5'9 by the time he graduates MIT. The perfect height for hugs and cuddles but I might be a little biased. His mom's 5'4.5, says she's 5'4.

Nico - 5'10, cried when he was 13 and realized he was taller than Bianca. Lowkey wishes he was shorter than Will so he could be the little spoon easier. Will does not give a fuck.

Bianca - 5'2, would have been 5'3. Their mom was 5'3 too.

Will - 5'8.5, when asked Nico interjects that he's "doctor height". Doctor height has become code for 5'8.5 specifically

Hazel - 5'2, doesn't know why Nico likes resting his head on her shoulder but she doesn't mind. Thinks it's just the bees knees when Frank picks her up and spins her around or gives her piggy back rides. She doesn't quite remember how tall her mom was, but she was around 5'4.

Frank - 5'7 pre blessing, 6'0.5 post blessing, 6'3 by the time he's done growing. Beefy build too. Definitely didn't know how to process the fact that he's taller than THE Jason Grace. His mom was 5'3 and his grandma was 5'1. Says he's 5'10 to mess with assholes who claim to be 6'.

Rachel - 5'3, The only person Annabeth likes being taller than.

Reyna - 5'4, memorized that she was 7 inches shorter than Jason when they worked together. Either he grew or she did, but she feels a little weird about it now.

C*lypso - asshole height. Jk little bitch height. Jk heinous shitlord height. Jk 5'7.5, made fun of Leo for being "short" when he was on Ogygia. She's gonna be half that height after I steal her kneecaps.

Headcanon that it’s now an inside joke with them and whenever someone asks what sort of monsters they’re facing Frank goes “New Yorkers”. Hazel has an issue with it because it makes her die of laughter right before they go into battle

Headcanon that a lot of girls that go to school with Percy really like him, like in a friendly way. At first everyone in his classes thought he was a weirdo or scary, but then a girl worked with him on a project, got to talking, and when he didn’t sexualize her or treat her like she’s dumb she went “woah. I want to befriend that.”

And so she’d say hi to him in the hallway, and introduced her to the rest of her friends, and before you know it he’s inducted into the group. They realize he’s not as scary as he looks and that he’s really funny. They also all appreciate that when they’re in public with him other guys don’t catcall and harass them because Percy gives off generally threatening vibes

- Having poc protagonists is so important, it tells young poc watching that they get to be the hero too

- There is no short supply of white protagonists in disney, it’s not taking away representation from anyone

- And simply why not

I was wondering if you've ever heard of Sam Tinnesz. He has 3 songs that feel like something a HoO fan would write. "How legends are made" is obviously about jason. "Wolves" the romans when they were marching to camp half blood "Run with the giants" about the big three kids. Also have you heard of Hozier his fandom is one of the nicest I've ever seen. Sorry this is just me fangirling over my music.

Yes, I’ve heard of Hozier. I think back then absolutely everyone was singing “Take Me to Church”, but uh, honestly aside from that song, I’ve never heard another song from Hozier that... suited my tastes. For me, he was a one-hit-wonder. ^^°

But like from what I’ve seen about his fandom on here? I can imagine them being nice. They basically all think he’s some eldrich deity living in the woods, patting Bambi or something. It’s... intensely confusing whenever I come across a post about him, but it’s also somewhat amusing. xD

I 100% agree that How Legends Are Made is Jason Grace, IT SCREAMS JASON GRACE. Like, seriously, I listened to that and immediately thought Jason and then turned back to your ask to see who you linked it to and was like “yeees that!!!”. (IT’S ALSO A REALLY FUCKING GOOD SONG I LOVE IT! And also, would alternately really work for Tony Stark tbh)

Hold Me Up? Percy’s POV Nicercy song. 100% especially with Percy’s fear of drowning during the Giant War and it lays so heavy on the PTSD and trauma Percy’s been suffering during it. Totally my new Nicercy song. It’s so much about how he can’t do this again, as in the Titan War was already too much he can’t go through another war. This is peak Percy’s POV on the Giant War.

Is This the End however is a Nico’s POV Nicercy song. Mooost definitely, fight me on that.

While Ready For This is totally a Titan War song, I very much imagine all of the rebels singing this together, with Luke as the lead of course. (I now have a very nice visual of some choreographed dancing with Luke, Ethan, Chris etc in my head). But like yeees this is the rebel army ready for change!

And, bit on the nose but sue me, Play With Fire is the Leo Valdez song, duh! Especially the part about the burning castle somehow immediately makes me think of Leo and Khione’s castle. Like, sure, this is a slightly darker take on Leo but I really like it?

And, hear me out on this one, but Watch Your Back? The di Angelos. Nico and Bianca, on the run from Zeus. Because he’s coming for them? Them, being so confused by everything, not yet understanding that the shadows are their friends?

I’d also submit Fight On for the Titan War. But this side the camp side of the war. Because they do fight for blood, for their family, in the end. (Like. Imagine Luke leads on with his song and then Percy comes with this one and the entire Battle of Manhattan is basically this dance-off??)
