been thinking about this post again and while su mengzhen is obviously a better person than tom buchannan i still think the comparison holds because just like gatsby and tom, bai choufei and su mengzhen are just.... by way of completely different worldviews due to wildly different upbringings, fundamentally irreconcilable people being forced to occupy the same space by the narrative until one or both of them breaks from it. you know what i mean

some day im gonna post that bai choufei is jay gatsby comparison thats been sitting in my brain since july and the world will be slightly worse for it

#syx #like if you ignore the actual character personalities the parallels are very... there #tom/smz both start the stories with a symbol of the thing gatsby/bcf wants most #(daisy as a symbol of social capital/the xiyulou as a symbol of power and status)#like the main parallel between gatsby and bcf is that theyre both #people killed by their pursuit of something they are destined to never attain due to the class(?) their born into #like the official syx weibo described bcf as a first generation youxia which is really the main problem here #like a classic trope of wuxia is the psychological warfare of loudly declaring to your opponent who your parent/shifu is and its always som #incredibly powerful and well known name (like im reading shediao rn and like #of the two main characters of the book one is taught by a member of the in universe Big Four Powerful Guys #the other is another Big Four member's daughter so this happens very very often)#meanwhile for syx like bcf is the only character who doesnt have any family status/power to lean back on so hes destined to never acheive #the kind of power and glory he spends the whole show looking for #meanwhile tom/smz is the character who has it all because they were already building on their familys foundation #obviously theres still a difference like smz still gained most of what he has through his own work which also makes him way more #vulnerable? like he has a lot more than can be taken away from him #which *does* get taken away from him because thats the show hes in #but like by way of how they were born and raised smz and bcf just have like... wildly different and opposing personalities #the way gatsby thinks its normal to call a guy he just met bestie every 5 minutes and tom thinks people who say bestie are fucking weird
