okay i have been sitting on this for a while bc i feel like all of my suggestions are basic but i've been emboldened by the recent phan song posting. a lot of the songs on my phlaylist i added because i associate them with wad/ii/etc but here are the ones i can actually lyrically defend:

yeah this is like half the song. deal with it. like. i think there can be something very healing about entering into a queer relationship with someone who makes you feel loved and safe after years of being told that was wrong. "how can you expect me not to eat / when the forbidden fruit tastes so sweet?" when i was young i had a very powerful sort of reverse conversion experience, where i had been struggling to make sense of catholic teachings on homosexuality because like... it just didn't seem that bad. but everyone around me was saying it was. parents, teachers, family friends. and i was like, 14, and at that age, you kind of assume that adults do know more than you. they wouldn't all be against this if there was no reason, right? and then i fell in love with a girl and i was just like. wow. okay. these people are just wrong?? because this feels so good and normal and right?? like. yeah. the forbidden fruit tastes good. and is good for you, actually.

the alchemy (taylor swift) is just like, a power couple song. i don't know that any lyrics are super specifically phan coded (phoded if you will) like i just hear anything about love and go "oh my god that's so dan and phil coded." but:

I'm going to come off anon to explain my Taylor Swift to Beatles pipeline because I do get that, if someone said what I said to me, I would also feel super nosy. And it's not bad or super embarrassing or anything. It's just kind of convoluted to explain in a way that might be annoying to your followers if it came in anon form.

So, like I said, I've been a Taylor Swift fan from basically day 1. I have strong memories of Tim McGraw first coming out on country radio. But I always considered myself a casual fan. For Debut, Speak Now, Red, and 1989, I only knew the singles and one or two other songs. And I only knew Delicate off Reputation. And even though I'd fallen deeply in love with folklore and evermore, I still didn't consider myself a swiftie and missed the rereleases of Fearless and Red entirely. But a few months after Red (TV) came out I was having a conversation with my sisters about our favorite music artists and realized that Taylor Swift was probably the musician that I had had the longest and deepest relationship with. And even though I saw myself as a casual fan I'd watched all her music videos, except the ones for Look What You Made Me Do, Endgame, and Ready for It? (which I didn't know existed), obsessively, she was the only artist I've ever tried to see in concert, and nothing about my relationship to folklore or evermore could be considered casual. And upon realizing that she was probably the most important musician in my life, I immediately got in deep as a fan. But, as previously alluded to, I was super reluctant to get back into rpf. Both because of the absolute horror of seeing how tinhat conspiracies spiral and because I know my own tendency to place my favs on pedestals and how unhealthy that is with real people. So I tried to confine myself to what I hoped would be a healthier version of obsessing over a real person. I only looked at reviews of her music and tracked her sales statistics (something I also always get overly invested in with my favorite celebrities). It's super difficult to find accurate sales statistics for music, but I found this great site called chartmasters.org which is at least consistent in its measurements across artists. And eventually, after checking it obsessively every day for weeks, I couldn't help but notice The Beatles at the top of the artists chart. And how they were 75 million records above the next highest artist (Michael Jackson), which is basically Cher's whole career. I've never really been a huge music person, so I knew about the Beatles, but my whole opinion of them was - Beatlemania, a few good songs, influential, but massively overhyped by middle-aged men. Seeing them that far ahead of the next person down made me go "what the hell is the deal with this band?". And then I went down a Wikipedia rabbit hole which turned into a tumblr rabbit hole which is what led me to that gifset. And now I'm here.

So that's it. Nothing too bad, just kind of a ridiculous explanation to send over anon.

disclaimer: i know a few people will read this and be like “op is a hozier fan can she really talk about the cultural obsession with mediocre white art?” and the answer is yes because a) i’m black and i have an english degree so can do whatever i fucking want, b) hozier is a better artist than taylor objectively, like his mediocre tracks would be considered her great ones, and c) the comparison of taylor to hozier is part of the problem Genuinely because i don’t even think white people like half the music they listen to, they just don’t wanna be left behind, we’ll get into this later. i’m sorry to everyone who is tired of hearing about him but hozier will be returning later in this post jsfglsjlgldsjlfd

i don’t just dislike taylor because she’s white. i don’t dislike taylor because she’s a woman. i don’t dislike her because she writes mean and petty lyrics about past relationships and people who wronged her. i don’t dislike taylor because her public circle of friends is almost exclusively blonde white celebrities with their own laundry lists of issues that includes ryan reynolds and blake lively who are poster children for white privilege and pseudo-excellence if i’ve ever seen them. i dislike taylor because the amalgamation of all of those things is so exemplary of a huge problem i have with the music industry in general but also like american society

fuck it, numbered list!

1. taylor swift consistently releases the same mediocre album but in different colors. every album is the same lyrically and tonally. her body of work rarely goes very far above “good for taylor swift”. folklore as both title and musical aesthetic is irrelevant to the actual content of the album, which is just every taylor swift album except set to folk pop and with a bit more cussing, congrats for baby’s first swear. i’ve seen folklore compared to much better bodies of work and even propped up by stans as album of the year, a distinction that rina sawayama and chloe x halle will be battling it out for if there is any justice in the world at all. the fact that she is allowed to do this and still be considered great when this is something that even white male artists are butchered critically for... astounds me. like we all know how well received all of coldplay’s similar sounding albums are.... Come on. 

2. i don’t think taylor or her work is particularly feminist and yet for some reason every time she frowns an army of white women brings her kleenex. i’m not saying taylor’s anger has always been unjustified, but her feminism to me has always felt like “i can do whatever a man can do” feminism, which is utterly fucking useless to me as a black woman. it’s only useful to her because as a wealthy, white, straight, cis white woman her ONLY obstacle in life is her gender. and if she just didn’t have that tricky little bitch then maybe people would take her seriously. like, just think about her music video for the man... what was the thesis of that? what was the point of that? with all of her privileges she’d just be gaining a single extra privilege. she’s a blonde blue eyed thin white girl, the world kisses her feet. i have no interest in proving myself any better or any worse than white men, they are not the standard for how a person should be treated, they’re cautionary tales, and white women are too. i think taylor capitalizes off of white woman victimhood, and it’s all over her writing style. even when she’s trying to be empowered, like in mad woman for example, there is this tone to it of victimization, poking the bear, unleashing the beast if you will. she invokes the imagery of salem witches and even more boldly chooses a noose to write about in the song which is..... surely going to be a white tumblr staple for many gifsets to come but holy shit is it hollow. she also tends to come back to teenage memories in her music and she’s thirty. i don’t think about being seventeen unless i’m being held at gunpoint but she seems to think about it All The Time. and part of this is to keep herself young, at least in her music, which only further ingrains this image of fragile teeny bopper taylor into the mind of the listener, fueling her victim image. this imagery and language means nothing because the world always rallies around taylor. even when she was the butt of jokes for not being beyonce (which she is not and never can be) and writing about her exes (which she does), she was largely supported by the industry and by critics. look at how many fucking awards she has!

3. folk and indie and alternative music is in a moment of transition, where musicians of color are getting the chance to really speak about how they’ve been treated in these overwhelmingly white circles and create their own standards and their own voices. and for taylor swift to swoop in with aaron dessner and jack antonoff fantano and almost reassert that mid-2010s indie sound as The Sound of folk pop in the popular consciousness.... it makes me violent! it! makes! me! violent! 

4. back to hozier! finally, i wanna talk about white standom, fandom, bandom, and womandom. i often see these very superficial comparisons between hozier and taylor (and hozier and florence and hozier and stevie nicks and hozier and whatever other white woman in fashion) and they frustrate me for more than one reason. i know that hozier has met taylor and said she’s cool, which is nice of him and he’s a nice man, but i’m not a nice man so i’m going to just say it: none of the people who have made those posts have listened to more than four hozier songs and it shows. the reason why this matters is because these posts catch on and create an image and preconception of hozier’s music that is divorced from reality and divorced from his influences and most importantly divorced from the deliberate and reverent blackness of his musical style. hozier has his white male privilege in the industry for sure but he’s not as towering of a giant as taylor and taylor’s music is an unsalted chicken, plain oatmeal, white paint drying on a white wall, a stick of unflavored gum. her music is so white it told me that its dad is a cop. i am, as a black hozier fan, exhausted with having to share space with white women who don’t know why hozier’s music kicks me in my lungs sometimes and think that taylor mentioning a tree ONCE in her 3 minute acoustic guitar slog about whatever suburb is the same when it simply is not. i swear some of you are pretending to love taylor because your friends love her and you don’t wanna be left out of the hot new musical discourse but she’s only the hot new musical discourse CONSTANTLY because she’s a white woman, she’s almost the Perfect white woman. like if someone asked me to describe a white woman, it would be taylor swift. her position at the top of the musical pyramid among people who eclipse her musically, vocally, and lyrically is only allowed because she’s The Perfect White Woman. she’s an ideal. white girls relate to her immediately because of it and now we have this unshakable mob of unbearable white women who think that the world has wronged someone who literally wrote fanfiction about the rich oil heiress white woman who owned her rhode island mansion before her aklghlghdhlgs it drives me fucking NUTS

Whatever Happened to Tuesday

Cisco slouched into the couch, grinning as he watched Barry shred on air guitar, hair flying as he sang his latest karaoke song without having to look at the screen. 

This was nice. This whole evening had been nice. The four of them, like they had been in the beginning. 

No Wells, though.

Still, that was right, too. He'd idolized the original Wells, the one who hadn't been Wells at all.  There had always been a quiet thrum of anxiety down his spine when he was around Wells, as if this time was the time he would disappoint the older man, and see the pride in his eyes dissolve. 

Thawne had probably known that. Probably encouraged it in a dozen subtle ways.

Joe had never made him feel that way, even though he was of an age with Wells/Thawne, and Cisco's own pop, who had always looked at him with disappointment. No, with Joe it had always been steady belief and quiet support, right up to the moment earlier in the evening when he'd extended an open invitation to stay .

Not that Cisco would take him up on it. Or at least, not too much. Joe totally meant it, but he also had Cecile and Jenna in the house, his own little family.

It was good to have some time with Barry, too. Not that Iris wasn't awesome, but sometimes when she was around, it felt like Barry was only with her and the rest of them were sort of set dressing.

Which was fine, she was his wife and the love of his life. That was how these things went. But it was hard not to miss Barry sometimes.

And Caitlin was smiling and laughing too, the quiet worry that tightened her mouth and the corners of her eyes softened for a few hours. He was going to need to keep up on that sitch from Star City. Frost could take care of herself, obviously, but that wouldn’t stop Caitlin from obsessing about her sister’s safety while she was on the lam.

Did it make him a bad friend if he was kind of relieved not to have Frost's chilly presence in the room? He was beginning to warm up - ha, ha - to her. But she wasn't Caitlin. That had been the whole problem.

Don't think about it, he told himself, crunching a carrot stick from the tray on the coffee table. Just enjoy having Caitlin here with you.

One last time.

He glanced at her, and she gave him a big grin, her eyes scrunching up into her cheeks so he knew it was real. He grinned back. 

With one last furious air guitar chord, Barry finished his song, and they all clapped and cheered and laughed. He laughed too, zipping over to the kitchen and zipping back with a big glass of water. "Cisco," he said, glugging it, "your turn."

"Dude, I did all my songs!"

"Then pick another one!" Barry threw himself into the couch again and started eating celery sticks.

"I could sing," Caitlin said, and laughed when they all yelled "No!" She'd butchered a Taylor Swift song early in the night and had her microphone taken away, as usual.

Cisco strongly suspected that her terrible singing voice was at least fifty percent deliberate, when she was sober, at least. Frost had sing-yelled an Aerosmith song at her birthday party last year and she hadn't been half bad.

Still, faced with the threat of what Caitlin might do to another innocent song, he flipped through the options on his karaoke app. They were all familiar, well-worn like good jeans. Somehow he didn't want to sing any of them, though. He jumped back to the home menu and hit "random." 

Weird Al Yankovic? No.

Something in Korean? Um, no.

Van Morrison?

He paused, studying the seventies-tastic album cover with its bubble lettering and folky white guy. The first guitar solo spooled out in his mind, and he moved his fingers on invisible strings.

"Are you going to sing that one?" Caitlin asked, sitting down next to him.

"Maybe," he said. 

"It's really pretty."

"Yeah, and it's fun. Sha-la-la, la-la, la-la, la-la," he sang. "La-la tee-da, la-tee-da."

"Brown-Eyed Girl," Joe said from the kitchen. "Van Morrison."

Barry chomped a carrot stick. "Oh yeah, this came out when you were in high school, right?" He grinned a shit-eating grin around the vegetable, well aware that he was off by about twenty years.

"Just for that," Joe said, coming back with a cup of coffee, "I'll tell you that my pop used to sing it to my mama all the time."

"That's not so bad," Barry said, falling into his foster father's trap. 

"Mmhm," Joe said, sipping coffee. "Pretty sure that song is why I got conceived."

Barry gagged. "Oh my god. Not Grandma Esther. Please, Joe."

Joe laughed his big, rich laugh. "Son, you remember this when you want to embarrass your own kids in about ten, fifteen years.." He nodded at Cisco. "You too."

Cisco smiled weakly and tried to catch Caitlin's eye to exchange silent glances. But she was fussing with the hem of her - his - Han Shot First t-shirt, trying to fold in a little spot where the thread was coming loose. 

He looked back at the screen. Yeah, he should sing this song. His guitar was back home, leaning up against his suitcases to take to Star City with him, but he could probably talk Barry into whisking it over here . . .

Barry grabbed his phone when it lit up. "Heyyyy, Iris and the girls are on their way back," he said.

Caitlin cleared her throat. 

"I mean the other girls," Barry said. "You know what I mean."

#showyourprocess: Jiang Cheng edition!

Hello! I was tagged by both @highwarlockkareena​ and @fengqing​ for two different gifsets: this one and this one. So I’m going to try and go through what I did for the Jiang Cheng gifset here; I’ve done the Xichen one in another post!

This one is lessy image-y and more about the techniques I used with links to fonts/tutorials, so I hope it’s still useful and worthwhile!

1. Planning

Although I said in my other post that I don’t usually “plan” my gisets, I did for this one since it was part of my Jiang Cheng + series. I basically googled “top taylor swift lyrics” - I had a few in mind already that are from songs that I love of hers, but I wanted a range of inspiration. So I found this post. I then went through and picked out some specific lyrics that I felt fit Jiang Cheng the best and rolled with it! I then started to think about the scenes I wanted.

2. Creating & Colouring

After making so many Jiang Cheng gifs I have a sense of the scenes I love the most, so I was drawn to a lot of the “angstier” ones - his arguments with WWX, episodes 48-50 crying/breakdowns, scenes with Wen Qing, etc, to match up with the lyrics that I chose.

I decided that I wanted them to all have the same basic colouring, but I wanted to play around with the text effects, so I used the same PSD. What I’ll do is go through the different text effects that I used.

My layers look like this, for reference:

For the first gif, I used Avenir LT 65 Medium. I used between 12-14px and used full capslock, then added a stroke background of 1px to highlight the text. For the gap between the two gifs and the layer mask, I did something that looked a bit like this:

The top layers are the text, then the PSD, then you can see the layer mask on the second to last ‘Group 1′, to erase some of the gif so they’re separated via the white line - which I just pasted on! In hindsight, if you’re going to use white lines to block out bits of gifs it’s best to go with about 4px width because that seems to be the width between tumblr gifs. 

For the second gif I used the exact same font, same size and everything, but I put the text to exclusion (or difference sometimes works) to add that effect as Jiang Cheng moves. It’s always good to play around with the colours and see what works best - if I remember right I played around with blues and yellows until I found one that I vibed with!

I used a similar technique for the third gif, just with a different font. I used the transform tool to turn it a little to sort-of align with Jiang Cheng’s hair, and then duplicated the “castle” layer and added the layer effect of “stroke” in white. I then turned the fill % to 0%, so only the stroke showed up, and moved it a little to highlight the word castle properly. There’s a tutorial to help you with this here!

The very last gif I found a ripped paper texture I liked (genuinely googled “ripped paper texture”), copied it into photoshop, used the magic wand tool to highlight it all and make it black and then slapped it onto the gif. I used Nouvelle Vague as the main/larger text then used the selection tool to cut out the gap in the word to put in the other text, which is back to the same font I used before (AV). Again, it was set to exclusion and I played around with colours to get what I liked first.

If you’re looking for how I put the two gifs together in the first place I basically copied and pasted (”over selected frames”) using the animation window (I’m sure not all versions of photoshop have it, so there’s a tutorial here) and then moved it around until I had it in the place I wanted.

3. Posting

I’m just going to copy and paste from my other summary, because it’s the same!

I always save to drafts first so that I can check that 1) tumblr didn’t mess it up 2) there are no glitches I didn’t notice in photoshop and 3) I can add captions. For coloured captions I use this tutorial just to get a colour gradient. Save as a draft to make sure it’s all saved properly and looks good and then you can post!

Going into the ginny & Georgia tag for gifsets and half the posts are about the Taylor swift line. Like it was wrong I’m not denying that but one thing is there were other way more problematic things in this show. It was a great show but it had its flaws but the Taylor swift thing is the one thing people are focused on. Do they not realize that teenagers are ignorant and say stupid shit like that all the time it doesn’t mean the show runners and especially the cast actually believe in or approve of slut shaming they’re trying to portray how some teenagers talk and act that doesn’t always make it right but sadly it’s realistic there was no implication that they want us to believe those types of jokes are okay. But like regardless the fact that people are bullying the cast is seriously gross, I’m not saying people aren’t allowed to be upset but...it’s a fictional show and again there were other things in the show that were way more problematic and that’s not the actor’s fault. And like did they miss all of the racism? But even that is showing how sadly realistic it is that people are ignorant and hateful but it doesn’t mean they (writers, actors, etc) condone that behavior. No one said the Taylor swift line was okay, no one laughed, teenagers say stupid shit nowhere in the narrative was this framed as okay or excusable. And just like there was other problematic things besides the Taylor swift thing, there was also a lot of amazing things about this show that people are looking past. Like obviously not everyone’s gonna like it and that’s fine, but to hate it all because of one line and especially without having even watched the show...that’s their choice but, they’re missing out on a great show. I for the record do think Taylor has every right to be upset but people are blowing it way out of proportion. If you’re gonna bully the cast and try to get the show cancelled without even giving the show a chance and recognizing that teenagers are flawed and they aren’t always gonna say the right thing and that to write a teenage character you’re not always gonna agree with everything you write because you’re writing for a character who is still growing and learning and makes mistakes. Im not trying to say it was the “right” thing to write and like Taylor called it out and that’s great she had every right to do that but there are many non-fictional instances of sexism, racism, etc happening in the real world with real people that could use that same energy and to keep focusing on this isn’t gonna solve anything. We can hope the writers don’t include those jokes in the future but they can’t undo it now unless it’d really be worth it to go edit out that one line. I won’t complain if they did but anyway. I’m sorry I definitelydon’t think the line was necessary but I don’t think it should ruin how many other things were great about the show.
