benedick challenging claudio to a duel, 2011 version vs the 2001 radio play version
#much ado about nothing#david tennant#much ado#i love both of these because benedick is being played with two different moods (maturity vs anger) but both of them work so well#in the 2011 version they really lean into benedick being ostracized by don pedro and claudio. he is no longer 'one of the guys'#he's angry but also cool and rational and dead serious in extremely stark contrast to claudio who thinks he's telling some joke#and it's a sharp left turn from the silly goofy cringeloserclown of a man he was at the beginning of the play#in the 2001 version he's more brimming with fury and it sounds like he's on the verge of strangling claudio right there#like this interpretation of him overall is much more the battle hardened cynical soldier that is ready to throw down and we see that here#and the image it conveys of him walking up to claudio and snarling the challenge in his ear is sooooo. God i am not your strongest soldier

can i be honest for a sec? i kind of don’t like the david tennant + catherine tate much ado.
truly just personal preference but i hate the direction of the confession scene, it takes all of the gravity and weight out of the previous scene, hero’s humiliation, claudio’s betrayal, beatrice’s anger…. i understand the intention: love is a funny, embarrassing, human thing! but i also think that the tone shift ends up being so jarring and bizarre and ultimately doesn’t work very well with the themes of the text.
anyways everyone go watch the 2019 shakespeare in the park Much Ado it’s on archive.org and it’s FANTASTIC!
#truly my favorite thing about much ado is the way it VERGES on tragedy. if one thing had been different in that story it would have all gone#so very very tragically and i love that it doesn’t! and i love the sudden genre shock in the middle of the text like fuck it’s good#claudio’s rage and beatrice’s ‘kill claudio’ are SOOOO shocking and sobering from the humor and revelry of the rest of the piece and they’re#such a stark difference to the previous scenes. they make you stop and go. oh. he ruined hero’s life on a whim#and beatrice wants him dead for that. and is benedick’s love great enough that he will kill for her?#somebody take me home i’m thinking about the way much ado was very nearly a tragedy again#lu.txt#shakespeare#much ado about nothing

I'd rather have seen the og film and will have to get to it eventually‚ but even in bastardized form this was a lot of fun#largely that's down to Johnson's superbly mannered‚ urbane villain. he's clearly having just the best time‚ chewing up the scenery#and being just despicable whenever he's onscreen; a villain for the ages truly. against him is poor Cassinelli‚ having just an awful#time as he goes from disaster to disaster. mix in some human experiments‚ the lost city of Atlantis‚ a heap of treasure and some#stranded convicts and you have a riproaring adventure film that's honestly more Boy's Own adventure than the sloppy sleazy nastiness#I'd gone in expecting (and most of the sloppy nasty that is here was added by the US!). oh and apologies for the slightly risqué picture#I've chosen to end this post with‚ but it turns out there's a whole photoshoot with Bach and the fish men and it's kind of amazing#ok i just read that apparently Johnson rewrote most of his dialogue for this and that only makes me love him more

omfg . radio play version of much ado with david as benedick from 2001
#this version of benedick is a lottttt more serious and restrained than the 2011 version#definitely due to the medium and bc it matches the energy of this version of beatrice way better#it's not david and catherine's insane comedic chemistry but it's still really good imo..#like it's obviously not as endlessly fucking funny as the 2011 version but it's still really solid#and i'm impressed with how they did the humor in a 100% audio format#and i actually really love this interpretation of benedick as more cynical and leaning into his Hater side#ironically david's benedick here generally comes off as older and more mature than his benedick 10 years later#'the prince's fool... hAhH???' is obviously extremely funny but also 'the prince's fool... [uppity hmph]' is Inspired#and his outraged 'oh!'s and gasps and sighs when he listens to don pedro/claudio/leonato talking abt beatrice being in love with him#also funnily enough i think benedick's whole monologue after this is SO good. if not better than the 2011 version#cuz it's more restrained you have benedick's haterism actively fighting and losing against his satisfaction and giddy laughter#and the bit where benedick challenges claudio is so ohhhghhgouhgghg#the way his voice deepens with 'and her death shall fall heavy on you' just FLOORS me it's fucking perfect#but also equally as fun are the line readings where they have evidently remained the same (or similar)#my dearrrrr ladyyyy disdaiiiiinnnn#and the 'she misused me past the endurance of a block' rant#and when he's bitching about claudio falling in love w hero#but the vibes are so different this feels like a whole separate guy and that's really cool#i'm not sure how much i would love this production overall if i wasn't as familiar w the play tho#much ado#essentially trying to say in the least embarrassing way possible that david tennant is now both my first and second favorite benedick
