Trying not to dwell on it but I'm still so fucking (petty) upset
Played DND with some coworkers last night and one of the girls not only showed up half an hour late but didn't actually prep her character like we were all told to
So her bard didn't have spells
And then when. 2 hours in she was like 'wait i should have spells' after I'd gone down THREE TIME she still didn't pick a fucking healing spell despite me saying 'oh yeah if you take that you could bring me or 'other coworker' back up'
My DM ended up ruling (since I was apparently the only healer) that if you rolled 3 successes you could come back up to 1 hp
I ended up going down 5 times during the fucking session and ended the session unconscious and am honestly probably not going back if next month goes the same way

Advice wanted on dealing with Combat Slog
What I mean by combat slog is often a traditional D&D or Pathfinder (can be other systems too, frequently turn-based with larger numbers of combatants) combat encounter will be fun at first, but after a number of encounters, I am doing a routine attack sequence and then stuck waiting for the party or enemies to do their turns.
I want to be able to say this is an attitude problem, and it might be, but I’ve always felt this more acutely when playing rpg video games, thinking of games like Pathfinder: Kingmaker, WotR, Rogue Trader, Baldur’s Gate 3, hell even my beloved Pillars of Eternity. But I also feel it playing D&D, Pathfinder, Starfinder, etc., with friends too.
Despite being the sort of person who will sit down and have fun making character builds specialized for combat, maybe I just don’t enjoy traditional combat that much.
Often it feels like combats are present as a time fill to prevent from getting to something interesting too quickly, especially egregious when having to fight through a number of distinct groups of enemies to be able to continue a conversation, that once again leads to more combat encounters.
Anyone else have this problem or have any advice?

been replaying control slowly and taking my time and i just realized why the floppy disk (telekinesis power) works the way it does. it was seen as an object that had the capability to launch world ending levels of danger (in this case, nukes) and thus was imbued with that cultural idea, giving it the ability to launch objects. did not realize that the first time i played!

Love running around in Veilguard just breaking pots and crates with my orb and dagger, it reminds me of Kingdoms of Amalur, which is one of my favourite games! The fast-paced action-based combat is another similarity that I really like.

Ok real talk, looking for advice from other DnD’ers... at what point do you just nuke your character?
Rant/more info in tags.
#the group I play in (not the group I run) aka my first venture into DnD#they told me to play as a bard.#no one told me how f*cking hard it is to try to manage a bard#let alone to be USEFUL as a bard in a mid level experienced campaign with power gamers and lots of dungeon crawls#after slogging my way through the first ten or so combat scenarios and realizing I am quite literally useless#I found fun again by just becoming chaos unhinged#I touch things I shouldn't#i drink things I shouldn't#I basically live by the motto 'eh we all die sometime' and just do things to spice up the game/make things interesting#but any time there's combat I position myself outside the fighting somehow#most recently everyone went inside to search a property and I stayed outside petting the ponies#because I know I can't be useful and would only be in the way/prolong things#but comments have started getting made that honestly make me want to not play at all#our last game I sent a PM to the DM asking if my character should mysteriously disappear or kill herself#because I could tell that everyone was annoyed with me and it just instantly stopped being fun#I spent the remaining two hours in silence with my mic muted crying and waiting for the game to be over#I talked to the DM and he said that there are lots of things I can do#I reminded him I have only successfully dealt damage once in the entire campaign and it was like 2 points#I told everyone I just want to stay out of combat so I'm not in the way#I believe I phrased it 'I'm going to go be useless somewhere else'#but everyone is mad when I don't fight#and frustrated when I do because it takes so long and I never accomplish anything#and I know we're nowhere near the end of the campaign#I like my character a lot... I just want to stay out of combat until I level up enough to be useful

I've been trying to get back into Alan Wake II, but I feel like the developers don't understand that the point of having a clunky, unsatisfying combat system with limited ammo is to force the player to pick and choose their battles. It kinda crumbles when have all these long combat sections with tons of ammo pickups, because you remove that element of strategy.

heres my review of pathfinder: wrath of the righteous: if you have a spell slot based game and not a cooldown based game, you need it to be turn based. period. but in this game, there are too many enemies and too many encounters to feasibly do the game turn based. i understand that you can turn it on and off but the overall length of the game makes it so that i would rather just turn it on easy and do rtwp than do turn based for a single battle. The compromise makes both styles not work. Also you cant relearn just your spells you have to respec the ENTIRE CHARACTER which FUCKING SUCKS. The end. I will be playing divinity original sin 2 next and maybe by the time i finish that baldurs gate 3 will be out

The more I think about Veilguard the more I'm glad Old Republic is with another studio now.... I rather risk a shutdown over YA novel writing that removes player choice agency and having them matter in future installments...
