Trying not to dwell on it but I'm still so fucking (petty) upset
Played DND with some coworkers last night and one of the girls not only showed up half an hour late but didn't actually prep her character like we were all told to
So her bard didn't have spells
And then when. 2 hours in she was like 'wait i should have spells' after I'd gone down THREE TIME she still didn't pick a fucking healing spell despite me saying 'oh yeah if you take that you could bring me or 'other coworker' back up'
My DM ended up ruling (since I was apparently the only healer) that if you rolled 3 successes you could come back up to 1 hp
I ended up going down 5 times during the fucking session and ended the session unconscious and am honestly probably not going back if next month goes the same way
#we're playing out of the abyss so at first the no magic thing didn't super factor into things#but it was a slog of a combat#and every time I was hit I went....back down to unconscious lmao

Advice wanted on dealing with Combat Slog
What I mean by combat slog is often a traditional D&D or Pathfinder (can be other systems too, frequently turn-based with larger numbers of combatants) combat encounter will be fun at first, but after a number of encounters, I am doing a routine attack sequence and then stuck waiting for the party or enemies to do their turns.
I want to be able to say this is an attitude problem, and it might be, but I’ve always felt this more acutely when playing rpg video games, thinking of games like Pathfinder: Kingmaker, WotR, Rogue Trader, Baldur’s Gate 3, hell even my beloved Pillars of Eternity. But I also feel it playing D&D, Pathfinder, Starfinder, etc., with friends too.
Despite being the sort of person who will sit down and have fun making character builds specialized for combat, maybe I just don’t enjoy traditional combat that much.
Often it feels like combats are present as a time fill to prevent from getting to something interesting too quickly, especially egregious when having to fight through a number of distinct groups of enemies to be able to continue a conversation, that once again leads to more combat encounters.
Anyone else have this problem or have any advice?

been replaying control slowly and taking my time and i just realized why the floppy disk (telekinesis power) works the way it does. it was seen as an object that had the capability to launch world ending levels of danger (in this case, nukes) and thus was imbued with that cultural idea, giving it the ability to launch objects. did not realize that the first time i played!
#CONTROL#honestly i wasn't fair to the game the first time i played#so much annoyed me and i can barely even remember why#the combats kind of a slog in some cases but only if i play it max aggressive#im really enjoying it way more this time around playing slower

Love running around in Veilguard just breaking pots and crates with my orb and dagger, it reminds me of Kingdoms of Amalur, which is one of my favourite games! The fast-paced action-based combat is another similarity that I really like.
#dragon age#da veilguard#games#kingdoms of amalur#still haven't gotten that far 'cause i don't wanna rush and i really wanna explore and take in the world#recruiting my last companion right now (emmrich)#i'm definitely enjoying it but i'm not completely hooked#feel like the combat and the companions are the best parts so far#the plot and lore so far is intriguing but nothing amazing#i do like that it's fairly open but not on the scale of inquisition which can turn into a slog just getting through the areas#it's a good middle-ground between all the games#but with added puzzles and secrets which i really enjoy#but like i said#i have A LOT of the game left so we'll see how the story progresses#have managed to avoid any endgame spoilers so far!

had mixed feelings about this game (mostly in terms of gameplay and some of the later levels) but i got to jiggle the kitty so it was worth it
#mp#too hard to get screenshots off my ps5 now so i just got a picture of the tv screen lol#beat it last night#if i liked heavily parry based combat more i probably would have enjoyed it more#but i kind of played it halfway between souls and bloodborne and it kinda worked out#the later levels were a slog though#just endless previous mini bosses in small areas with extra hp#the amount of ergo i got per enemy barely seemed to go up over the course of the game#which wasn't terrible in terms of leveling#but was terrible in terms of buying stuff#also the translation wasn't great which meant a lot of guides were very hard to understand#but the story was interesting#and a lot of the city areas were cool#the non city areas were mostly just brown and grey which was not great#i did enjoy the weapons and abilities#hated the weapon durability#loved the gap closer slide on my main weapon#legion arm was cool#fable arts were cool#bosses were hmmm#i feel like soulslike games try really hard to make fights hard without understanding how to make them interesting#liesofpmp

Ok real talk, looking for advice from other DnD’ers... at what point do you just nuke your character?
Rant/more info in tags.
#the group I play in (not the group I run) aka my first venture into DnD#they told me to play as a bard.#no one told me how f*cking hard it is to try to manage a bard#let alone to be USEFUL as a bard in a mid level experienced campaign with power gamers and lots of dungeon crawls#after slogging my way through the first ten or so combat scenarios and realizing I am quite literally useless#I found fun again by just becoming chaos unhinged#I touch things I shouldn't#i drink things I shouldn't#I basically live by the motto 'eh we all die sometime' and just do things to spice up the game/make things interesting#but any time there's combat I position myself outside the fighting somehow#most recently everyone went inside to search a property and I stayed outside petting the ponies#because I know I can't be useful and would only be in the way/prolong things#but comments have started getting made that honestly make me want to not play at all#our last game I sent a PM to the DM asking if my character should mysteriously disappear or kill herself#because I could tell that everyone was annoyed with me and it just instantly stopped being fun#I spent the remaining two hours in silence with my mic muted crying and waiting for the game to be over#I talked to the DM and he said that there are lots of things I can do#I reminded him I have only successfully dealt damage once in the entire campaign and it was like 2 points#I told everyone I just want to stay out of combat so I'm not in the way#I believe I phrased it 'I'm going to go be useless somewhere else'#but everyone is mad when I don't fight#and frustrated when I do because it takes so long and I never accomplish anything#and I know we're nowhere near the end of the campaign#I like my character a lot... I just want to stay out of combat until I level up enough to be useful

I've been trying to get back into Alan Wake II, but I feel like the developers don't understand that the point of having a clunky, unsatisfying combat system with limited ammo is to force the player to pick and choose their battles. It kinda crumbles when have all these long combat sections with tons of ammo pickups, because you remove that element of strategy.
#alan wake 2#alan wake ii#idk if this is a hot take or not lol#i do like the story and a lot of the visuals#but goddamn the forced combat sections are a slog

I feel like I don't even like h** that much as a game yet here I am grinding shit for a fictional man OTL
#im pretty much just here for the story which is honestly not mindblowing or anything but its fun#the characters are hyv generically pretty but way overdesigned imo#and a lot of them translate p badly to overworld models#not to have been spoiled by g*nsh*n but the overworld feels sooooo bad in hsr its such a pain to run around too#and the combat gameplay itself is such a slog#oh the music though im here for the music too lol#wildfire has been on constant repeat for me since it came out#0.txt

Finally finished the base story on GW2 on one of my characters!
#not swtor#trying to remember if I still had anything resembling a ranged weapon for dag for that last series of fights was rough#lol at a hammer apparently being a ranged weapon#it’s like when combat/carnage was listed as ranged in swtor#I can technically throw my weapon so it is technically ranged#I wanna do all the stuff to get the different mounts but like.#I don’t wanna slog through anything to unlock the different types of mounts#do you feel me?#like it has been satisfying to finish some of the puzzles with just my little raptor and my idiot self#watching people just. fly up past me or bounce up on springers#but there’s some stuff that it’s like. I just wanna know what’s up there!#or I just wanna dick around in cooler ways

heres my review of pathfinder: wrath of the righteous: if you have a spell slot based game and not a cooldown based game, you need it to be turn based. period. but in this game, there are too many enemies and too many encounters to feasibly do the game turn based. i understand that you can turn it on and off but the overall length of the game makes it so that i would rather just turn it on easy and do rtwp than do turn based for a single battle. The compromise makes both styles not work. Also you cant relearn just your spells you have to respec the ENTIRE CHARACTER which FUCKING SUCKS. The end. I will be playing divinity original sin 2 next and maybe by the time i finish that baldurs gate 3 will be out

The more I think about Veilguard the more I'm glad Old Republic is with another studio now.... I rather risk a shutdown over YA novel writing that removes player choice agency and having them matter in future installments...
#dragon age the veilguard#it's disappointing#as a lesbian i think the representation was all for a free pat on the back#the writing was mediocre with interesting concepts at best#but total dog shit at worse#yeah writing is subjective#but it feels way to long and repetitive with all this 'relatable' dialogue#there's no real party conflict or banter like the previous games#i'm not allowed to call out a party member's horseshit#the combat becomes a slog#it's just frustrating
