Oh, right! It seems like your university president is dealing with it in the best way possible under the circumstances, that's pretty cool.
As for whether they can ban things that the Duden allows, I'm not sure. They have said this about the Rat für deutsche Rechtschreibung:
Be gay do crime but in Barvaria and we're putting these everywhere
#i have no idea how the uni where i study is gonna deal with this and i doubt they'll actively tell people who aren't staff#the uni where i work hasn't sent out anything about this yet though afaik#but if the /- version that the duden accepts is fine then we won't actually have to change anything#because that's what my boss and coworkers decided we should use anyway#and mostly we translate from german to english so it's not relevant for that#still i literally just finished writing a whole guideline/list of tips about inclusive language. the irony of the timing isn't lost on me#again it was mostly about english and specifically translation#but it still has a little section on different kinds of gender-inclusive terms in german
