It's Intersex Awareness Week! Did you know it is also Asexual Awareness Week? There are individuals who belong to both groups, such as our own Youth Program Manager Apollo (yours truly) who created this art to celebrate both. Intersex people are born with variations in their sex traits or reproductive anatomy that do not fit traditional conceptions about male and female bodies. On the other hand, asexual people experience sexual attraction in a way that deviates from societal standards, such as not experiencing it at all or only under certain circumstances. Historically, these two communities share a similar fight for bodily autonomy against societal standards that dictate what we "should do" with our bodies. Both communities also often struggle to gain visibility of their perspectives on international, mainstream social media. So, during Intersex Awareness and Asexuality Awareness Week, let's put our hands together in solidarity for bodily autonomy and to be loud and proud!

🖤🩶🤍💜 Affirmations for Asexual people this Asexual Awareness Week 🖤🩶🤍💜
🖤 You are a valued and important part of the queer community
💜 Your asexuality is valid, it is not something that needs to be changed
🩶 You are worthy of loving and healthy relationships, if you choose to have them
🖤 Asexuality is a spectrum, it is okay if your asexuality is different to someone elses
💜 You are allowed to struggle with internalised acephobia

if I see one more “straight people on the aromantic and/or asexual spectrum don’t count” I will personally light shit on fire
If you’re heterosexual and aromantic, you’re valid. If you’re asexual and heteroromantic, fuck yeah, you’re valid too. You belong here, in LGBTQIA+ spaces, and I love and accept you here. You belong at the pride parade, you belong in the LGBTQIA+ clubs at your school or university, and you belong in the LGBTQIA+ community.
We love you. You belong. anyone who says otherwise can go fuck themselves.

Happy ace week!
Known as Albanian sworn virgins or burnesha, people like Leme (left) and Haki (right) practice a traditional Albanian custom that allows someone assigned female at birth to assume a male gender role by taking a vow of chastity. This tradition has been an accepted part of Albanian culture for centuries.
While each individual would have their own experiences with the practice, several sworn virgins interviewed by academics Antonia Young and Rene Gremaux in the 80s and 90s spoke about their lack of sexual desire, or the ease with which they had given up sex, suggesting that this traditional practice could form a space in Albanian culture for people we might understand as asexual.
Check out our podcast on Albanian sworn virgins to learn more!
