#but in a blue jumpsuit

Sometimes, there’s a theater in my head at night. The following is best imagined as a movie, because that is what it looked like.

For reasons that fit the narrative, I find myself in some kind of church hall. I’ve been separated from whatever company I was with. It’s getting dark and I’ve been told there’s danger in the dark, namely a vampire. I’d like to leave and find my friends, or get a room somewhere, but am told I’d be safest staying in the church. Because of course. The building has two entrances; I’ve been led in through the back door by some guy presumably associated with the church. This guy is a 90’s version of Eddie Murphy, looking all dapper in a little suit. A flashing smile as he informs me of the superior safety I’ll be in, staying in the church as opposed to anywhere else. And he locks the door from the outside. It’s a good door, it even has a crucifix on it. I’ll be safe now, right?

Wrong. More narrative! As I turn around, I realize the backdoor was never even closed. And it’s getting dark! Shit shit shit. There turns out to be a double door to the main room, a small hallway and then an outer door. No time to close the outer door, the inner one will have to do. Luckily, it has some kind of chain on it for extra protection. I pull the doors closed and lock the chain, only to realize the key to the door is hanging at the blessed chain, I mean, who would do that? Fumbling, I manage to unlock the chain again, remove the key, lock the chain once again and then quickly lock the door. Phew!

In the main room there is a couch and some armchairs with cushions and blankets. I manage to make myself comfortable and fall asleep.

Fast forward a bit; I am either aware that I’m dreaming, or I dream that I’m aware that I am in a comedy. I am in the dream, pretending to be asleep, and I am watching myself sleeping. Either way, I can also see that the door I locked is now slightly ajar and someone is trying and failing to get through the chains. It’s the vampire. This is the vampire: also Eddie Murphy, still 90’s edition but this time he’s in a blue velvet jumpsuit with major disco vibes; broad collar, flared legs, open at the chest. Long black hair as behooves any vampire with self-respect. And he is fussing with the chain that so rudely keeps him out of the church. Which he shouldn’t be able to enter anyway, but you see, the chain! For narrative reasons! Is the only thing keeping my blood in my veins. And this guy wants my blood. He wants it sooo bad. He has to come up with a clever plan to get to me, but it isn’t easy.

I think I’m merely feigning sleep at this point, safe within the laws of comedy. If he believes I am asleep, I cannot be hypnotized or tricked into opening or going outside. The vampire has got out a folding ruler (A yellow one. Can you picture it?) and is trying to measure the distance to my delicious neck, but it’s complicated since he cannot reach all the way through the door. At which point he simply gives up, slips under the chain and starts measuring the distance from within. Oh, but we thought he couldn’t enter the church? But he hasn’t, really. He is only in here in the sense of general comedy; he is the Coyote, running in the air. Impossible, but fully doable as long as he doesn’t look down and realize what he is doing. Which is why I am still perfectly safe even as he comes over to the couch, still plotting how to get to me. If he were to understand that he is actually in the room with me, and could bite me at any moment, he would immediately crumble to dust or however these things work.    

He's in his velvet suit, squatting next to the couch, yearningly reaching out to my neck. And I am perfectly safe.

I don’t think this is the weirdest dream I’ve ever had, but it’s definitely one of the more specific ones.
