ok i need to vent about a trope in video games (mostly rpgs and visual novels) that i really don’t like, and want to talk about why a lot of games fail at it and give a few examples of how it succeeds. however to do so im going to spoil a shitton of games. so if you plan on playing any of the social sim persona games, the xenoblade trilogy, sea of stars, 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors, pokemon mystery dungeon explorers of sky, chrono trigger, the great ace attorney, or danganronpa 2 and 3 (the anime not the game), do not read this post. i will be spoiling all of them.

so what’s up with characters dying But Not Actually so much?? it’s gotten to the point where whenever a main character dies, i’m almost certain that there’s going to be some funny business to justify bringing them back. it kind of drives me nuts, and i wanna talk about why this plot point fails in so many games (and also a few where it works in my opinion because it CAN work).

to start, the xenoblade games, specifically 1 and 3. i think fiora’s death in xenoblade 1 was my first exposure to this trope and honestly i think it’s done alright. there’s a LOT of foreshadowing about the nature of the face units in the early game, and having her be turned into one makes complete sense. also she’s not the only character who’s presumed dead that ends up in a face unit, so the concept feels more complete than just an excuse to bring back a main character. the main problem with fiora is more that her character pre-death is so much better than post-death, but that’s less to do with the resurrection and more just me disagreeing with the direction they take her character. overall this game gets a pass from me, not a bad use of the trope.

xenoblade 3 however i will not be so kind to. mio’s fakeout death fucking sucks and it ruined one of my favorite characters up to that point. they build up the fact that mio is dying all game, it’s a huge part of her character. the existentialism of it all was so compelling to me, i was excited to see where it was going to go. but the body swap with m during the prison sequence was so underwhelming it hurts. it is mildly foreshadowed in the fight against m, but it still felt like they sidestepped the conflict entirely because they didn’t have the guts to actually follow through on what they had set up. which, to be fair, this would be fine if they actually explored how she felt about living when she was supposed to die, but they don’t. this is pretty much the last major character moment for mio all game, and it was so disappointing to me. not a good use of the trope at all.

persona 3 (portable) and 4 use this trope too and it’s also pretty rough. shinjiro’s death is a big moment in persona 3, and saving him in portable feels super underdeveloped and feels like it was just used for fanservice at the end of the day. nanako’s death in persona 4 is almost insultingly underdeveloped too, it feels like it only happens because they needed to add extra tension during the climax of the game, when it would’ve worked perfectly fine if she was just severely injured in my opinion. having her die and come back just feels cheap and unearned.

persona 5 does it much better with akechi in my opinion but that’s also because him coming back is pretty much a mirage. the only reason he comes back in the third semester is because maruki thought him being back would be part of joker’s ideal reality, and once maruki is defeated akechi goes away too. it’s all pretty fantastic, and the way they explore akechi’s feelings about the whole situation is great too. of course, there is the moment at the ending where you seem him through the window but that’s left purposefully ambiguous and i choose to believe it’s just joker’s imagination lol.

chrono trigger is probably one of the oldest examples of this trope and it didn’t really bother me, but that’s mostly because i wasn’t super attached to crono in the first place cuz he doesn’t have much going for him in terms of characterization lol. i also think that because there are multiple endings including one where he doesn’t come back (and you really have to go out of your way to bring him back) makes it feel a bit less cheap? i don’t know, i don’t really have a strong opinion one way or the other for this case.

now sea of stars i’ve gone on record saying i adore, but i still don’t love how they handle garl’s resurrection. it feels almost identical to crono’s, and feels a bit too fanservicey for my liking especially since i thought garl’s death was so extremely well done. it’s cute, and i do love garl, but i prefer the regular ending where he doesn’t come back.

so… remember how all the characters in danganronpa 2 didn’t actually die? cuz they were in a simulation the whole time and it wasn’t a “you die in the game you die in real life” situation like they implied in the game? yeah that was weird. i don’t remember this bugging me a ton back in my danganronpa phase but like… the deaths in that game in particular were really well done for the series (let’s forget about chapter 3 for now) and having none of them matter in the end kind of sucks. it also doesn’t feel like that was the original vision since this reveal only happens in the danganronpa 3 anime and not in dr2, so it feels like it was probably done for fanservice more than anything.

these next two are ones i don’t think were too bad and that’s because they both happen and you kinda just know they’re not gone for good. kazuma from great ace attorney and snake from zero escape (999) both die so early and so suddenly after being set up to be seemingly important that you sort of just know they’re not gone for good, and if they were you’d probably be disappointed. also they both slap when they come back and their characters would probably feel incomplete without their reveal that they didn’t actually die. if you’re going to kill characters and bring them back, this is one of the better ways to do it in my opinion.

finally, this isn’t really a death but it still really bothered me. i really don’t like the ending of pokemon mystery dungeon explorers of sky’s final special episode. for years i thought that once grovyle and dusknoir returned to the future and you and your partner save the world, they’re gone. that’s how the game sets it up. i’ve thought that’s how it was for years since i didn’t play sky until last year. learning that no, they save the world and all the pokemon from the future are fine actually was so… it just felt wrong. i feel like they didn’t want a sequence that grim to end the episode in a game made for children, but i was like 9 when i beat explorers of time/darkness the first time and i understood the implications of what happened. learning that wasn’t actually the case now that i’m an adult bothered me and i wish they had stuck to their guns.

so what’s the common thread here? well, the times where it doesn’t work are usually because it feels like fanservice or like the story didn’t justify it well enough. it feels like you’re being coddled almost, like don’t worry your blorbo is fine!! they’re still alive!!! and i hate that so much. stick to your guns!!! if you don’t have a damn good reason to bring back characters after they supposedly die, don’t bring them back. it usually feels wrong and hollow. look, in real life, people die (i know big shocker), and there’s nothing you can do about it. i’ve had people very close to me die, and while i would do anything to bring them back, that’s just not how it works. i know games are supposed to be escapism where you suspend your disbelief, but i don’t usually feel happy when characters i love die and come back. it just feels like mildly condescending wish fulfillment. i just wish authors would be more thoughtful about this kind of thing.

Eren making his move in order to protect his friends was the overall favorite scene of the episode. Closely behind is Squad Levi showing up to save Eren and Historia. Despite some upset about the change, the scene where Levi tells Historia she has to become the queen ranked third.

The hardest question for me to answer was what my most favourite scene was because frankly speaking, none of the “big” and “impressive” scenes made an impact on me. I just rewatched S2 and was blown away by how the last few episodes especially were so well done. I wish this season makes me feel the same way later on.

I remember this feeling of absolute horror and disgust when I first saw Rod Reiss' titan back in the manga but the memes over the years made me forget. Wit has very successfully brought those feelings to the fore again, and goddamn I get shudders even now and I've rewatched the episode twice already.

I'm halfway though... A part of me wanna see turkey titan moving. A part of me actually prefer worm titan coz it is more disgusting. Anyways CGI are overdone in this scene. Wonder if the face reveal will be as disgusting as the rest of the body

While I like the concept of the 104th kids showing their concern for Historia, the dialogue pretty much spelled out Historia's character arc and felt incredibly forced and on the nose

With the top two options being at nearly a tie, 25.1% still believe that the scene should have been included before the kidnapping - brutality included - and 24.9% were just happy to have it although the characterization of Historia and Levi feels changed. 23% agreed that the change was needed as Levi lifting Historia at this point in the story would no longer make any sense. 17% preferred the change and felt it gave Historia more agency over her situation.

Considering this scene took place after the kidnapping it wouldn’t make sense for Levi to get angry and attack her but the scene was pretty underwhelming compared to the manga. Although I’m just glad that this means we still get to see Historia punch Levi (even if he hadn’t really done anything to deserve it in this version).

Mikasa is going to be surprised (and ofc delighted) when she realizes Historia actually took her literally lmao

Why did Mikasa told Historia to punch Levi? Historia has no reason to punch him since he did nothing to her. It doesn't make any sense for her to hit him just because Mikasa told her to, or at least it has so much less meaning than in the manga…

A lot of people yelling at WIT. Sure, I miss some of the exclusions too but the pacing change was needed and stuff has to be cut. The important bits of the story are still all there. I think they're doing a fantastic job and I'm almost sure Isayama gave his thumbs-up for all the changes.

Since there were no questions about the soundtrack I'll use this place to try to convert everybody to the Sawanism. God the music was a masterpiece!

The CGI worm titan was such an alienating thing to witness that it took away from the horror of the situation. It might have looked really hideous as this creepy-crawly giant thing of a titan, but sadly it just didn't work. On second viewing, it didn't bother me as much as the first time, though, so I guess one can get used to it.

I don't know if any of the music was new or not but wow!!! It made those scenes feel so much more emotional

Levi is a much sweeter version of himself in the anime, I've noticed. In fact nothing is as dark as it was in the manga. But Accordion Titan is way creepier animated so no complaints there.

I'm kinda disappointed that WIT remove some Frieda flashbacks, (last episode with the possessed Frieda scene missing, and here Historia not thinking about her alongside Ymir) it reduces the impact she has on Historia's life/development.

I was watching it in the night, so it gave me some double thrills :D Rod's titan was really creepy and Sawano's music made him to be even more scary. In my opinion the animation was awesome. It looked much better than I expected. The whole extreme moments in the cave was also amazing and I truly liked them.

For once WIT did eremin some justice with their reunion touch (my heart!), every mikahisu moment was perfect (yes, even the one at the end where mikasa tells historia to punch levi) and I ADORED that they gave historia so much agency in her decision to become queen! Honestly if I had to watch Levi rough her up at this point in the series, I probably would've vomited. It would've been incredibly unnecessary (which is likely why isa changed it, don't y'all think?) and this way was SO MUCH BETTER. Plus jean and conny being so concerned for her was THE BEST THING EVER, they're just like "but dad, what about my friend's FEELINGS?" and I LOVED IT. That's snk at its core tbh. Historia definitely deserves it too. And her power walk into the briefing room afterward was everything! In conclusion! Eremin is real! Mikahisu is real! And erurihan is fuckin real! That "danchou" had me FLOORED and we already know how much both erwin and levi love hange so like.. get with the winning team y'all.

Armin described the moment Rod's titan came out from under the chapel as something like "the end of the world". Between the music and his nightmarish CGI look, I was sold on that description. Oh, and since I mentioned music, Sawano's at it again, the absolute madman! Will he ever stop coming up with good tunes? The answer is never.

(hello again! ive been busy, hopefully you dont mind me still replying to you) oh yeah, ive read a lot about sasuke and itachi, so i know like kinda how the war ends, i know what madara does, and i know that resurrected itachi broke my heart. i did skip ahead and watch, i think, 450-456 but had to stop cuz of irl. i just wanted to see every ep with itachi in it, which is a lot easier than watching every ep with sasuke in it haha. i think their tragedy is what makes me want to write about (tbc)

them. i am the kind of person who loves to make my muses suffer, but i also love happy endings (sometimes). its been such a nice time reading your fics, tho i havent read them all yet and im wary about the victims of peace one. im pretty sure i will like it, but since its not focused on sasuke and itachi, i am less driven to dive into it. but i finally got to finish in power we entrust the love advocated, which is WONDERFUL and so fun! it gave me goosebumps, and i think you did a great job (tbc)of portraying itachi with amnesia. i also got to read black roses! i was pleasantly surprised to find some bloodplay in there, i love bloodplay but havent even gotten to think of it lately let alone indulge in it in any way. so thanks for that unintentional gift. while im a bit nervous to finish my writing, im also excited. i know i cant ever write exactly like you and thats fine, but every time i start thinking you might not entirely dislike my portrayals, i worry im being cocky haha. Watching/reading NAruto takes time, I know. I started (binge) watching the anime only when the war had started, while I was reading the manga already. And for an Itachi fan it’s easier to watch or rewatch his episodes, Sasuke ones are more, but I’m into Naruto for Sasuke and his episodes, with or without Itachi, also because I love everything Team Taka. Actually my interest in characters is connected to whether they interacted with Sasuke or not, and I was sometimes surprised to find interesting certain episodes/chapters/moments where Sasuke wasn’t there.

Anyway, thanks for the compliments on my Itasasu fics. I love bloodplay too as well as power dynamics so I loved writing it especially for Itasasu which is too often portrayed as too cute and fluffy for my taste, and again, Itachi is written too nicely and Sasuke too bratty while I can’t see them that way.

Of course I don’t expect you to write what I write lol, everyone is entitled to their opinion and portrayal, just like, by consequence, the reader may or may not agree with it or like it. Imo the most important thing when writing, especially canon divergent stuff, is writing a good context and solid reasons for the characters to do what they do and think what they think. This way their personalities and dynamics will feel natural and IC even tho the context is different from canon.

As for Victims of Peace (and every other non Itasasu fic I’ve written), I write Sasuke-centric stuff and I even though I think Itasasu is Sasuke’s strongest bond (also it’s my OTP) I am very interested in other pairings. And I am very proud of my rarepairs fics and AUs cause Itasasu is so strong in canon that it’s easier to write, while making Sasuke get close to someone who’s not Itachi is hard but very satisfying for an author. So, since I received too many complaints about VOP already and not because it’s badly written or characterized but plain spoiled bitching because too much angst, or because Itasasu isn’t the main pairing, I gotta say that if you think you’re gonna have a problem with it don’t read it and if you do don’t complain about it to me pls.

Uh, rant ahead because I don’t celebrate halloween as I’m not American or British or from any other anglo-saxon culture based country that celebrates it, and tbh while I may find certain things about it cute, I mostly dislike it, along with valentine’s day and other consumeristic holidays that force people to buy sweets and stuff. I have met amazing American people on tumblr and some are my best friends now, but still, even on tumblr where it’s the main culture, I don’t want to be swallowed by habits that don’t belong to my culture, where it doesn’t exist, we have a whole week when we dress up as whatever we want not just spooky things (kinda like mardi gras maybe) and we have a day of the dead ones, where people go to cemeteries and that’s all. So even though I first liked the novelty of seeing Halloween stuff here as well, now it feels like my country is submitting to American culture and consumerism over and over as if it didn’t happen all the time already.

and finally after like 20000 meters of running he caught up with you

some people here may wonder why i often go after the writing in yan sim (well they havent asked that they just tell me to die or to shut up or kill myself lol)

i could go over why the game mechanics are a mess (which i have before…i keep harping on the matchmaking because wow what a mess) or why the coding is all over the place and the constant glitching and so on so forth

but the reason i mostly get on alex’s case with the characters and story is because, well, im a writer. technically im a amateur writer. i havent published anything yet (tho u dont have to be published or professional to know whats bad writing like you dont have to be a super great artist to know shitty art) and storytelling is a huge passion of mine

so basically i see yan sim/lovesick as a big “how not to write story/characters/setting/etc” guide for new and upcoming writers. while some writers (like me) dont outline their stuff you still need some kind of IDEA of what you wanna do for your story. yandere simulator is all over the place. whats the tone? is it a serious game like alex claims or is it a hentai wannabe parody? the aishi bloodline makes no sense and its laughably out of place in a “serious” game like this along with the panty shot mechanic. the characterization is inconsistent. ayano is “emotionless” but still gets the blushy shyness around taro? and has a sanity meter? taro makes all the girls want him but has shown NOTHING as to why he’s even desirable. midori is supposed to be an annoyance but has done nothing annoying or worth being horrifically killed over.

some characters are also super out of place. gaster FUN GIRL doesn’t belong in this game, nor does the phantom girl, or the demons. they dont fit the story at all and are clearly there because a) dev is an undertale fan and b) dev is trying to find the edgiest thing to put in

and the names…folks, when you’re writing characters of another race (in this case, Japanese characters) NEVER use google translate and especially dont use shitty puns or engrish. do your research.

the setting is odd too. no, not the fact that they’re in school (thats a staple in anime and anime inspired stuff so thats useless to complain) but its the type of school they school. a wealthy “respectable” private school is allowing girls to dress in short ass skirts and wear heavy makeup? teachers and nurses are allowed to wear outfits that intentionally show their cleavage? his reasoning for it makes even less sense because if this school was real, NO ONE would take it seriously (like he claims they do). it would be seen a joke. parents would refuse to enroll their kids there moment they heard about the teachers (especially the one who’s preying on teenage boys). being realistic, the school would be a huge laughingstock in japan and the entire world

so basically until dev actually gets better with his writing (which so far is only getting worse by the minute if his “explanations” on reddit are anything to go by) i will keep hounding on his game. and before you stans go “its not finished!!!” dev is literally spoiling the game and is putting everything out there to be criticized (like he supposedly wants) so dont give me that.
