Not crazy recent, but bogs take thousands of years to properly form - sometimes closer to hundreds of thousands - because the amount of peat needed requires an insane amount of plant matter to not decompose properly. since Bogs are stagnant, their water is very poor in Oxygen, meaning that decomp doesn't occur as it does normally. What this means is that Peat, oddly enough, is the first step on the path of plant matter turning into coal.
