𝜗𝜚⋆₊˚ caleb x fem! reader
a/n: based on the new 5 star trailer! i know it’s not spicy and i know his memory might be a lil spicy but i think being vulnerable & hand holding is so adorable c: not proofread btw!
tw: quick fluff with cyborg caleb!
the laboratory was quiet, occasionally having the creak of the low hum of the engines. caleb sat shirtless on the edge of his cot, his head bowed, his hands resting on his knees. or rather, one hand. the other, a gleaming, mechanical mental that rested there like a ghost of something he’d lost.
you had noticed it before, the way he avoided using his right hand more than necessary and the stiff movements when he tried to grip something delicate. but up until now, you hadn’t pressed him on it.
but tonight was different.
“…you’re staring, pipsqueak” he said, his voice quiet but tinged with that familiar edge of amusement.
you took a step closer. “i’m not staring. i’m... observing.” you huffed.
he let out a soft, humorless chuckle, shaking his head. “same thing.”
you frowned, crossing your arms. “why didn’t you tell me?”
he finally looked up, his beautiful purple pinkish eyes meeting yours, and for a moment, you saw something raw in his expression, something he rarely let anyone see. “…what was I supposed to say?” he asked, his voice low. “hey, by the way, I’m not the man you remember. part of me isn’t even human anymore?…”
“don’t do that,” you said, stepping forward until you were standing right in front of him. “don’t put words in my mouth.”
caleb sighed, running his left hand through his hair. “it’s not just that it’s gone,” he admitted, his tone softer now, more vulnerable. “…i..can’t feel anything. not from this.” he gestured to the robotic arm with a small, bitter laugh. “no warmth. no touch. nothing. just cold metal pretending to be part of me.”
your chest ached at the weight of his words, and before he could retreat further into himself, you knelt in front of him, placing your hands gently on his knees. caleb,” you said softly, waiting until he met your gaze again.
“it doesn’t change anything for me,” you continued, your voice steady. “you’re still you. the man that’s always looking out for me and taking care of me. the man that would rather throw himself in harm’s way than let anything happen to me. that’s who you are, not…” you reached out, hesitating for a moment before resting your hand on the cold surface of his robotic forearm. “…this.”
he tensed at your touch, his jaw clenching as he looked down at where your hand rested. “but i can’t feel it,” he whispered, his voice strained. “…i-i can’t feel you..”
your heart twisted, but you didn’t pull away. Instead, you slid your hand up to the connection point where metal met flesh, gently placing your hand on his shoulder. “then feel me here,” you said, your voice barely above a whisper.
he let out a low chuckle, shaking his head as though to dismiss your words, but his gaze remained fixed on yours, a mixture of exasperation and quiet longing etched into his features. slowly, you reached for his left hand, the one that was still flesh and blood.
his breath hitched as your fingers brushed against his, hesitant at first, testing the waters. when he didn’t pull away, you intertwined your fingers with his, feeling the roughness of his calloused palm against your skin. His grip tightened slightly, grounding himself in the sensation of your touch, something he could feel, something real.
“here,” you said softly, guiding his hand towards your face. you ran his fingers over your cheek, pressing into his palm, letting him feel the warmth of your skin. his thumb instinctively stroked along your cheekbone, the motion being slow and delicate, as though he were afraid to break the moment.
caleb sighed, the sound heavy and quiet, like he’d been holding his breath for far too long. “…you don’t know what this means to me,” he murmured, his voice low and rough. “to feel this. to feel you.”
your heart warmed at the vulnerability in his words, and you turned your head slightly, pressing a soft kiss to the center of his palm. “you don’t have to carry this alone,” you whispered. “whatever’s happened, whatever’s still hurting, you don’t have to keep it from me.”
for a moment, he didn’t respond. his eyes searched yours, as though trying to find the truth in your words, then with a small nod, he let his forehead rest gently against yours, his hand still caressing your cheek. he was gonna cherish this moment forever.
“i’ll try,” he said finally, his voice barely audible. “for you.”
you smiled softly, your free hand reaching up to cover his, your fingers curling around his knuckles. “thank you, that’s all I ask.”
the silence that followed was heavy with unspoken emotions, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. It was the kind of quiet that came when words were no longer needed, when touch spoke louder than anything else. Caleb’s hand lingered on your cheek, his thumb still brushing admiringly against your skin, as though he couldn’t quite bring himself to let go.

So...how would you guys feel if I said I had a Caleb one-shot brewing? If I write a lot of it today, I might post an excerpt just to get yall lolking forward to it! 🤔
It's going to have a good bit of angst in it at first and I even have a nice playlist to go with it (I've never done a playlist before so I'll probably just link the songs on YouTube tbh). But I've written character sheets, I have the name of the one-shot, I have the ideas I want in it, it could possibly be more than one part — now I need to work on the backstory for before the story starts, then work on the story itself and the banner.
There's not much i can say about it, but i am writing kinda based on what we saw in his trailers and based on my own theories so of course, none of this will be 100% to what'll eventually happen in game! And there might be smut, it may be poorly written though since I've lost my touch when it comes to writing smut 🤔
I'll give the vibes for the one-shot though, so I'm not just posting this with nothing to show!
So the main premise is that there's no isekai, the reader is literally the mc. This is only a Caleb x reader, so while the other love interests will clearly like her, they won't actively pursue her. It's set in a slightly alternative universe where the reader is still grieving the loss of Grandma and Caleb. She still hasn't gotten over it and it's been almost a year since they passed on. So it'll be set in 2049 while the main game was originally set in 2048.
So everyone will be a year older (mc is 23, Caleb is 26, rafayel is 25, Zayne is 28, Sylus is 29, and Xavier (who I've decided to be about 25) is 26.
^ also i ran out of colours on mobile since i use green as Ot4/Ot5, so Caleb will just be bolded purple.
Anyways, the reader is depressed, always reliving that day in her dreams, and seeing ghosts of Caleb whenever she's out and about. She thinks the accident was somehow her fault and that she could've saved them, even though deep down she knows she couldn't.
Now this won't stay angst-y, since we all know Caleb is truly alive but that's all I can say so far! I'm still working on it right now though, so things are always subject to change. 🩷

Caleb’s little test
(so, umm, I got inspired by this scene in the trailer, and-yeah...)
Warning: NSFW, MDNI, pure filth
There’s more than one pair of eyes in this room, he said as he circled the bound woman in the leather chair; more than one curious pair of eyes, but only his touch. Of course that was a lie - yet, he had seen how her legs had moved as soon as he turned the device up, how she feigned fear, but looked to the sides on an instict and even how her throat moved as in nervous excitement. He had been attentive to the smallest signals in her body language. He did not lie, however, in the fact he was supposed to run a round of evol checks on the ‘newcomer’.
She had asked questions, to which he only answered to with curt yes or no. And only the ones he deemed to be of his interest - such as the nature of this machine. Soon, she would learn it. But he would be lying if he said he did not wish to be able to enrich her ears with all the things he truly had in mind.
The current ran through her skin, tickling it softly. She waited for anything else, however, she was left somewhat disappointed.
“You appear to be normal... only, Anhausen? And what is that?” His fingers typed quickly, checking older reports and data; yet, there was not much of an answer for that mysterious spike.
Glancing at her, he saw her restless hands - obviously, she must be extremely uncomfortable in that position; even if she had that spark of recognition to her eyes.
He ultimately decided to see if there was a mistake in the readings and tried again - same level of electricity, same result.
Caleb was at a loss now; he remembered how powerful her evol was from Josephine’s stolen data, but this spike came as a complete surprise. So, he amped the level a bit more.
This elicited a soft shuddery breath from her, and surprisingly made the spike show up more proeminently - could she be reacting to the machine electro field?
He inched close to her, analyzing her expressions - as the machine whirled in the back -, she contorted her nose a few times, but no real sign of pain. Her lips were relaxed and would only purse from time to time. Then he noticed how she was rubbing her legs together.
And a dark smile appeared on his lips. His eyes turned to the remote on his hand - should he push her further?
He did. And he was glad he did.
She suddenly felt it, the jolt her brain was always anticipating; she felt it in her scalp, a steady tickling, that soon traveled to her chest, and lower, stopping at her core.
He noticed the change, she pushed herself lightly away from the leather of the chair, her face looking up, but not at him. Her mouth opening and closing as she tried to breathe properly.
This was getting dangerous.
He stopped it completely, and she came back from her high; her bangs slightly sticking to her forehead, her cheeks flushed, and her legs clasped together - still rubbing against each other, but now with a barely perceptible tremor. But being attentive, he noticed, he noticed everything about her.
She spoke again, not to ask questions, but to make a plea “please, I need-I need to-”
He felt that desperate demand on his member. He was hard now.
“You need what, my dear”, he was purposefully being mean, avoiding saying her name; avoiding that nickname she pretended to hate.
It seemed his plan had worked, because she let out “I need to cum-I need to, so bad-it-it hurts!”
He laughed admitedly finding it extremely adorable how she tripped over her words to beg him.
“Alright, since you’ve been such a good subject, I’ll see what I can do.”
In his eyes she saw a man, a different man than the one she knew and she had to admit to herself - loved. His demeanor was scarier, his eyes far darker than the welcoming warmth she was used to.
This was not her Caleb. This was the Colonel.
Yet, the feeling between her legs did not vanish with her doubts - if anything, it increased.
“P-Please.” Her mouth moved without her consent, it was her body that was in control now, forcing her mind to forget about her mission, forget about how he seemed to have changed.
But she wanted, oh, she wanted so bad to feel him - any part of him. That uniform of his was in the way; that gloved hand was in the way - she wanted to hold it. Yet, why was the sternness of it all attracting her so much?
“This is my test now. Are you sure you’re up for it?” He was in front of her, his stance serious and formal. But his words had a sweet sincerity of someone who genuinely cared for her next words.
A nod would not be enough to translate it, so, she said “I am”.
His smile grew, dark again.
“Then, let’s begin...” he said with a shadow over his eyes.
She was dying in anticipation as he circled her again, “I’ve been meaning to do this since the moment you stepped into the complex. Naughty girl, trying to sneak your way into a military base, did you really think no one would see? That I wouldn’t see?”
His words were closer and closer, and at the ‘I’, she locked eyes with his looming form.
“It was admitedly a very stupid plan”, she said fast; he barked a laugh - and for a split second, she saw the old Caleb there. In his squinted eyes and toothy smile.
“And yet, in a weird way, it worked”, he said, while his hands loomed over her jaw, in suspense. He gulped. And she sought his touch by raising her head and meeting his hand on her cheek.
“Please, Caleb. Don’t make me wait no more... I’ve- I’ve longed for you...”, she had such a sincere look to her eyes; he saw himself in them - all those years ago, wondering if he should confess or not, and ultimately never doing. Now was the time - he either does something or watches as she goes away again.
“I don’t want to either. You’ve no idea how your words are true for me as well...”
“Then...”
“Yes!”
His lips came down on hers, savoring her sweet taste; her tongue sought his, and they danced - breaths mingling and sounds being juxtaposed. His groans and her whines.
“Please”
He stopped, and his hands itched.
“Are you really sure?”
“Yes, yes.” She nearly screamed.
He gulped again, feeling her body - as she seemed to invite him to go further, rubbing as she could against his abdomen. He sneaked his hands down, going for her pants. Glancing at her eyes, he saw her observing his hands, with curiosity, “like what you see?”
He flexed the leather, the crinkling noise making her gulp. As he lowered her pants, he was met with a simple black underwear - standard, boring. Yet there was a certain allure to it - it was so normal to her, and he was the one who got to see it.
His gloved finger hooked on the hem of the delicate fabric, and he casted a last look at her before pulling it down.
A shiver took her body - she had been entranced by the way the leather felt comforting against her skin.
And as he began to feel her, she sucked in a breath. Gods, he wasn’t even properly touching her and she was already tossing in the chair like a virgin.
She must have been truly sensitive, because as soon as he began massaging her lips - methodically - she writhed, and tossed her head to the side - hiding from him.
His other hand gently brought her back, and her eyes opened in a slit, “it’s part of the test”; she nodded.
It was truly marvelous how fast she had reached climax, with him only smudging his glove against her sex; and she convulsed, arching her back in a way he got genuinely worried, and rushed to soothe her - rubbing the side of her face and whispering “it’s over” again and again, “you’ve been so good” again and again like a chant. She groaned as he removed his hand from her sex and placed it over her stomach, rubbing it as well, “that’s right, you’ve passed”.
She felt his words, every single syllable shooting currents stronger than the machine throughout her body.
He saw her lips tremble and he kissed the corner of her mouth, “you’re so perfect. Everything I’ve ever dreamed of.”
She began to calm down, and looked at him with tired eyes, “will you come back to me, then?”
He smiled truthfully, “I don’t plan on leaving you”, he said with a determined tone, “ever again.”

I have re-watched the lost boys and I'm about to make it ✨everybody's problem✨
Perhaps you could make a star like s.o for sev or a star like person joining the hooker clan? 👀
Oooh I like this! I wouldn't mind an entire crossover actually (Hooker Clan makes there way to Santa Carla and run into David's group or Michael gets turned by Mae instead of Caleb and Caleb follows Star after his family goes on vacation and David fucks with him etc) maybe one day! I'd love to make this a whole one shot but for now this'll do.
I know this is supposed to be a 'Star like person' but I'm using Star herself as the face claim/insert.
Funny thing is, Jami Gertz and Bill Paxton were a couple in Twister so seeing them together in that movie (Even if it didn't last) doesn't make Star x Severen feel that far fetched to me! Or someone like her at least! For now, we'll do a Star inspired reader instead of Star herself.
Anyways useless facts over lets get to it-
Star inspired Reader x Severen • If Caleb stayed • At a County Fair/Carnival/Boardwalk at Night (Could even be the Boardwalk in Santa Carlo)
- The way your skirt shimmered as you practically glided around the crowd, the mysterious aura that surrounded you as you made your way through the lit up attractions and huge crowds all by your lonesome self instantly made inhuman eyes stare at you from the shadows. You stuck out among all the other people there like a sore thumb. A wild, free spirited, ethereal vibe about you that drew them in as a target for the night.
- I actually think Mae turned you or Homer. Severen may think you're breathtaking but he's not one to turn just anybody. Jesse definitely wouldn't. DB maybe but unlikely. Caleb would by accident but Mae is usually there to prevent that. I actually think either Homer turned you pretended to be a lost kid, eager to replace Mae and you fell for it like the gentle soul you were...Or...Mae saw a kinship in you. You're just so effortlessly cool and carefree and you're near her age and she deeply wants a friendship with you much like she impulsively wanted a relationship with Caleb.
- They won your trust when Mae or Homer introduced you to their family once you 'found them' at the carnival. They were intimidating but also...Intriguing people. Severen didn't hesitate to shoot you a coy smirk and crack a flirty joke as if he already knew you, Jesse didn't pay you much mind and DB asked you very personal questions "Where are your folks? Who's pickin you up, sugar? Did you come with anyone?" She was so disarmingly motherly despite her gruff exterior you felt inclind to tell her as you all walked through the crowds together. Caleb seemed the most quiet and the most apprehensive while Mae tried sharing cotton candy with him. Homer was very outgoing with you. After all, he seemed like a sweet 12 yr old kid. They were addictive. Doing crazy things that screamed fun, acting like they owned the night, they felt familiar yet dangerous all at the same time.
- You couldn't help it when Mae invited you to go look at a fortune teller booth alone together on the outskirts or when Homer begged you to stay and ride some rides with him. That he knew a really great one but you had to follow a shortcut.
- You were bit, you ran away from them scared to death but you swore every turn one of them was there. Severen finally nabbed you behind the funhouse. You were dragged to an unoccupied trailer as you realized everyone were definitely not normal. They argued amongst each other, blaming Mae or Homer for turning you but it was ultimately decided to let you stay...You didn't have much say so in the matter.
- Star was a half vampire in Lost Boys something I don't think Jesse would be as lenient about as David was. You being like Star; free spirited, whimsical, kind hearted, protective (especially of animals and kids like she was Laddie) but also fun loving and adventurous (She had FUN on the back of David's bike! She joined their group for a reason even if the reason wasn't entirely her choice; she was lured in by them) had you both fitting in and not fitting into the Hooker Clan. You were like Mae however you were much more...Fun! You may not lead the fun but you were right alongside them for the fun while she tended to hang back or go off alone with Caleb. You both bonded though, enjoying the night and dancing together under the moonlight just because.
- Severen surprisingly took an interest in you. You were the opposite of him. Your quiet and relaxed demeanor just made you more interesting to him. You felt an attraction to him bc he's just so infectious with his high spirit and thrill seeking personality.
- Eventually you kill but only if it's a 'bad' person. A punk hurting animals, a pos following women at night, someone bullying little kids or a bigot hurting those different than them etc. Jesse truly doesn't give a shit as long as you kill to feed and don't slow them down. You definitely argue with them whenever they get some younger person or defenseless older person and if it's a child; you are up in arms with them. It definitely causes conflict but Jesse secretly respects you standing up to him and standing your ground just like Star didn't hesitate to scold the entire group over Michael. He won't admit it but he'll make a choice to try and not get crying scared children to 'keep you from bellyaching'.
- You actually showed them a thing or two. Easily going into crowds of teens and young people, having fun and dancing around. Camouflaging yourself among humans easily. Jesse and DB both weren't ones to mingle among prey. Homer tried but usually hated being nice to people that thought he was a kid. Mae and Caleb were like a more awkward version of Jesse and Mae, they didn't fit in with the crowds...That's where Severen came in. You and him easily made your way through party crowds to scout out prey. Dancing together, snatching a drink here and there, him doing daredevil shit bc he just can't control himself and you just grin and cheer him on.
- You and Severen complimented each other in a yin and yang sort of way.
- You made him trinkets you crafted into pins or bracelets; that had him smitten with you. In turn, he got you anything you might like on his nightly walks. An antique bottle, vintage jewelry, anything sparkly you could wear just to name a few examples.
- You aren't one to fight people unless you're really pushed in a corner so anytime anyone calls you a 'hippie freak' or leers at you; Severen is your guard dog ready to fight for you.
- Jesse and DB find it comical the big bad Severen Van Sickle got with a whimsical, free spirited, mildmannered s/o that wears long sparkly skirts paired with his leather jacket (or a spar) regularly.
- It's never dull with you and Severen. Either his dragging you along on an adventure or you're grounding him by laying under the Stars together.
#I need Stars skirt. I wanted it since I was 12 man 😔😩#Happy anniversary to the lost boys btw!#the lost boys x near dark#near dark x the lost boys#severen near dark#near dark severen#near dark 1987#near dark#the lost boys#star the lost boys#near dark imagine#near dark imagines

Six Strangers Walk Into a Bar: Part 4 (Severen x Fem!Reader) fic
<- Previous Chapter Next Chapter->
Warnings: cheating mention, cursing
Word Count: 3610
Here's part four! Hope you enjoy~
His lips were surprisingly soft, not chapped like you might expect them to be. His kiss was firm and dominating, just slightly fast and leaving you feeling lightheaded. But careful. As if he didn't want to scare you off and make you retreat away from him. He melded his mouth over yours, guiding your lips and gently holding your neck with one hand while the other cupped your face. It was embarrassingly easy how he pulled a noise from your throat. He hadn't even touched you, in any way that mattered at least. But the way he sucked on your bottom lip, slid his against yours, and tugged your bottom lip gently between his teeth was threatening to turn you into jello. He gave your neck a small squeeze, and you had to pull away just to catch a break. A breather.
You broke the contact of your lips, but he followed you. Just to brush his against yours, making your lips tingle and crave more. But, when he let you pull away completely to catch your breath, you couldn't stop the hunger that went through you. You'd been given a taste and now you wanted more.
You pulled him in with a renewed about of vigor, and you could feel the curl of his lips as you became undeniably desperate. Your kiss was hard and sloppy, but he was quick to match your pace and swipe at your bottom lip. You parted for him easily, letting his mouth muffle the noise that left your lips at the feeling of his tongue sliding against yours. He lifted you up, like he was lifting a ragdoll, and pulled you onto him to straddle his hips. Your hands curled into his hair, tugging at the dark locks at the nape of his neck. He groaned, but even just a noise as small as that brought a wave of satisfaction through you. His one hand gripped your thigh, making a jolt run through your body when you felt the tightness of his grip. He pulled away to turn his head, letting you catch a quick breath, before his lips consumed yours once more. Your head was starting to swim, the kiss poking a fire in the pit of your stomach. He tasted like the flavor of your toothpaste, and you were starting to wonder just how far you were going to let him go. His hand was rubbing your thigh, and your hips were pressed flushed against eachother. While you weren't grinding against him yet, you weren't that needy, every little move made a spark of anticipation light up the back of your mind.
Before the kiss could continue anywhere interesting, there was a loud series of knocks at your bedroom door. The two of you yanked away in surprise, and Homers voice rang through the silence,
"Severen, c'mon! We're all waiting on the two of you!" And you watched as he whipped his head and began to growl a curse. Before a series of smart words could leaving his mouth, you turned his head back to face yours. You kissed him again, this one slow and deep. It was calmer. Almost sweet. But you cut it short and gave him a small smile. When he smiled back, it almost looked as if he was ready to flip you over and take you right then. Before he could lean back in and reclaim your lips, you told him,
"We'll finish this later." You promised, and that seemed good enough for him. That didn't mean that you didn't have to kick him out to let you get changed, and you decided on something a bit nicer than what you'd worn yesterday. A light sweater that wasn't so loose, just in case there was a chill, and a long skirt to match. The nicest thing about your outfit, however, was the matching underwear. You thought to put on a little make-up, but not anything that would take too long.
You didn't know what they were planning to do, but you finally decided to ask. Severen had changed back into his normal set of clothes, but had decided to keep your ex's tank to replace his tattered one. Everything else could still be spared, but it seemed like the bags they all carried were just a little bit more full. He'd grinned and kissed your cheek when he saw you, mumbling a flirt of,
"Howdy there, beautiful." You were given a spot in the corner booth, with Severen reclaiming his spot on the fold out chair and Diamondback taking a seat in Jesse's lap instead. They'd been asking you a few questions, ones about your life, family, and, finally, your ex. You'd been half-way through your meal then, and you'd glared down at the plate. You'd spared them most of the details, just saying that you found him with a waitress. You didn't know how long it'd been going on, but you figured he was an idiot so probably not long. There were only so many people in the little town, and only one diner. You'd let that information slip, and you had missed the way Jesse pointedly looked at Mae and Caleb. You'd also mumbled to yourself,
"That's probably where that asshole has been hanging. Waitress or no waitress." As you pushed the remaining food around on your plate. It was only a few minutes later that Mae, Caleb, and Homer had gone ahead into the night. When you thought about it, you supposed that was where your ex was spending all his time. Waitress or no waitress. You had finished your breakfast, and you were holding a cup of coffee with both hands as you stared at the heads of the family.
"Well, we were gonna head back up north. Maybe towards Washington, and then circle back through the Midwest." He said, making sure his gun was ready and loaded. "We'll need to take your car, of course, but we'll probably have to part with it once we get out of the state," He continued, but this is when you decided to interrupt.
"My car?" You asked, and he lifted his eyes. The look he gave you spoke clear as day. What else did you expect? "What- What am I supposed to do?" Without your car, you basically had nothing. You had your trailer, but that'd be gone by the end of the week. Your car was the only thing that was actually worth anything to your name. And it only took a moment for them to realize one part of their plan clearly hadn't been discussed. Jesse looked up at Diamondback, before clicking his jaw and giving Severen a small glare. Severen didn't meet his eyes. It was Diamondback that broke the news.
"Well, you're supposed to come with us, honey." And you stared at her. For a moment, you almost thought you hadn't heard her correctly. You looked at Severen, but all you saw was him carefully lighting a cigarette. Obviously, you hadn't been as thorough as you wanted to be when it came to getting answers, but he broke the silence by saying,
"If you want to." He said nonchalantly, with a small shrug. As if he wasn't laying something out that heavy. He looked over at you, meeting your eyes. You stared at him for a moment, and your mouth began to move,
"I," You paused. You didn't know what to say. They expected you to come with them. You didn't know what Severen was thinking, but it made it obvious where Severen saw this going. This wasn't just a one-night stand with a man that would maybe come back through this town two or three times in your lifetime. He was expecting you to come with them, and everything that came with that. There was a knee-jerk reaction to say no, but, after you thought about it, you wondered why you'd want to. Just last night you'd been sitting in a bar, trying to drink away your horrible life. You had no job, little money, a shit time at school, and a cheating ex. Speaking of your ex, his words rang in your ears. The rent's up in a week! And you weren't kidding when you said you wouldn't pay it. There wasn't any way that you could pay it. You'd been planning on spending the next week packing up your things and getting ready to move back in with your parents. My parents, you thought. Now that was the only thing keeping you in this town. Whatever your current relationship with them, you knew your parents would flip if you suddenly up and left. Still, you'd been praying for a way out. For an escape. And here they were, handing you one. It was one with a group of people that you didn't know so well, and who weren't exactly moral citizens, but you chalked that up to the fact that you hadn't exactly been specific with your prayers. It was why you said, "I'd need to call my parents. Just to let them know I'm not in a ditch somewhere." You said. You knew if you suddenly disappeared you'd end up on every milk carton in the state. The couple exchanged a glance, silent words passing between them. Finally, Jesse said,
"Sure." And a minute later, and you were dialing your parents house from the land-line in your trailer.
It was in the kitchen, hung up on the wall. Severen leaned against the fridge, with the other vampires heading out to follow the younger couple and the youngest of their family. You couldn't remember the last time you'd called your parents, especially this late. It took a few rings, but, after a moment, you heard the sound of your father's voice on the other line.
"Hello?" And you were already reaching to tangle the chord around your finger as you turned around to lean back against the counter.
"Hi, daddy." You said, and you heard him chuckle on the other line. His deep voice filled the reciever, and he said a quick,
"Hi there, honey. Late night?" He asked, and you smiled to yourself. You sent Severen a glance, and he lifted his brows at you.
"Yeah, just a bit." The two of you ran over how he was, and, after he returned the question, you said, "Um, I'm actually good. I'm- I called tonight to let you know I'm leaving town for a bit. I just- I just wanted to get some space from everything. I'm gonna travel with some friends." You told him, and you heard his hum on the other end of the line. Then, a sigh.
"Any friends I know?" He asked, and you bit your lip to suppress your smile. Your father knew, just as he knew when you turned eighteen, that he couldn't stop you from doing what you wanted. He didn't even try anymore, and just did his best to help you pick of the pieces when everything was said and done.
"No, no- No one you'd know. We haven't really decided where we're going yet, but my rent is up at the end of the week." You said, glancing over at your calendar. "It'll be up on Friday, and I don't think we'll be back by then. If you could do me a favor and-" But your old man was cutting you off to say,
"Don't worry. I won't let that S.O.B. get any of your stuff. I'll put everything in the attic for when you get back." He said, and it almost pained you how kind he was. You were chewing on your lip as you thought, if I do ever come back. But you shook away the idea. It wasn't like you'd killed anyone. As far as you were concerned, your slate was clean. And you would be able to come home as long as it was.
"Thank you." You told him, but your old man, quick as ever, said,
"Now, you wouldn't happen to be travelling with any boys, now would you?" He asked, and you laughed. It was a joke more than anything, you knew. Still, you were almost coy with the answer. You twirled the cord around your finger, watching as Severen pushed himself off the fridge and crept closer. By the time you said,
"Boys? Mm, maybe one." Severen was playing with the hem of your shirt and firmly inside your personal space. One of his hands slipped to your waist, the other holding one side of your neck. It seemed he'd finally decided to take advantage of the fact that the two of you were alone, and you stood on your tiptoes to meet him. You didn't hear your father's reply clearly, as you'd let the phone fall to your shoulder when Severen leaned down to kiss you. You could hear your father talking, probably warning you of all the things you should avoid. All probably things that Severen was guilty of himself. But you were too busy focusing on the feeling of Severens mouth on yours to really pay attention. You swayed a bit as Severens hand smoothed down your waist, and then to your hips. He gave your neck a small squeeze, but you swallowed any noise he was trying to pull from you. He lifted you up, setting you up on the counter, and you had to muffle your squeak. Severen kissed you until you were breathless, and one of your hands smoothed over his face to feel the coolness of his skin before tucking back into his hair. You heard your father calling your name, so you broke from the kiss to bring the reciever back to your face. "Yeah, no, no, I was listening. Be careful, don't rush into things, make sure he's a gentleman. I got it, I got it." But you were barely paying attention to your own words when Severen began to trail open-mouthed kisses down the expanse of your neck. Bastard, you thought. He'd wormed his way between your legs once more, and you were doing your best to keep your breathing even as your father said,
"I know, I know. Call me if you get into any trouble, or, well, just need to call. I love you, and you be safe now? Alright?" And you quickly nodded before you realized you were going to have to force your mouth to work.
"Yeah, I will be. I love you too." And you were hanging up the reciever just as Severens cold hands teased under the hem of your shirt. You pulled him back up and in, pulling him closer by wrapping one of your legs over his hip. There was something addictive about his lips, something that made your head swim and fog. It pushed away at all your morals, and you thought that perhaps this was how the devil tempted the wandering lambs. You could easily imagine Severen as a devil himself, and, perhaps, he really was. Severen was gripping at the fabric of your skirt and one of his hands was kneading the flesh of your thigh. It made you whimper, and, even if the noise was embarrassing, it only made him press further.
His mouth had left your lips again, this time to favor the side of your neck that he had missed. You didn't even care if he was leaving marks that'd be visible or not, and the way he sucked on the spot under your ear had both of your legs wrapping around his hips and tightening. You were sure that this was the man that was gonna drive you mad. You felt a graze of his teeth, and then he was dislodging his mouth and stopping himself all at once. When he pulled back, his eyes looked slightly wild. Feral. Similar to how'd they'd looked when he'd been holding you against the bar wall. It was him that decided to slow down, and he told you so by saying,
Severen carried the bag for you, and grabbed his as well. He didn't seem to struggle at all, and you were pleasantly surprised to see that they'd left you the car. Severen threw your stuff in the back, and the two of you decided that you'd arrange it later.
"Come on, they're gonna end up waiting on us all night." It's true that the pair of you were behind. Severen still had to eat for the night, and you were sure him and his family would be scratching to leave town the second all of them were full. The whole town had probably heard of the bar fire by now. But Severen refused, even if you may have preferred not to go out to eat with him, to leave you alone. He stayed while you packed a bag and helped you pick out the essentials. You had to slap his hands away from your underwear drawer, and it only started to dawn on you then that you were really doing this. You were really leaving. You ran a hand through your hair, looking around at the room you'd called your own for so much time. But, well, it didn't really feel like your room. It had been yours and your ex's, as much as you wanted to cross him out of his life. The whole trailer had been. The memory of him hung around like a ghost, haunting you and making it impossible to forget him. Especially since you'd caught him in this very room. When you thought about that, for a moment, you wished you'd had slept with Severen. On your bed. If not for a piece of petty revenge.
"I'm drivin'." Severen said, and you scoffed. You held your keys in your hand, shaking your head. For some reason, you doubted Severen was any good behind a wheel, but that didn't stop you from tossing him your keys after you locked up your trailer. The one good thing you remembered to do was to change the locks. Severen unlocked the door from your side, opened the passenger door, and waved you inside. You arched a brow at him at the gesture, and he smoothly replied, "What, I know how to treat a lady when I want to." He said, and you shook your head as you climbed inside.
"Mmhm, I'm sure you do." You sassed, making it all too clear that you'd caught the double-meaning, but all he did was close the door behind you, laugh, and walk to the other side. You bit your nail, watching him as he pulled himself into the car. You didn't know what had sparked it, but then you ran over the words you'd said to your father. Maybe, just maybe, he'd taken note. The front of the station wagon had a long seat, one that was broken up by a center console. Severen pat the spot in the middle, directly besides him, and you scooted over to listen. You leaned against him, and he wrapped his arm around the back of the seat after he pulled you out of your spot and towards the main road. "Where we goin'?" You asked, and he just sent you one of his usual smirks.
"It's a surprise." You wondered how the hell Severen planned on surprising you. It's not like there were many things to do in this town, especially things that you didn't already know about. But, when he pulled up to the only diner in town, the diner where your ex's waitress worked, you gave him a look.
"Ha-ha, very funny." You told him flatly, but Severen wasn't laughing. Just grinning. You stared at him for a moment, looking at the diner, and then realization crossed your face. "No- No way." You told him, shaking your head. But he was nodding his head, contradicting you.
"Yes way." He replied, echoing your words. You balked at him, and, for a moment, you really thought he was just pulling your leg. There was no way he could be serious.
"We're not going in there." You told him, but it didn't seem like he was going to listen. He'd already pulled the keys out of the ignition. He was putting them in the pocket of his coat, and he relaxed back against the seat and shrugged his shoulders,
"Only alternative is we spend the entire night in the parking lot." He said, and, with the way the night had been going so far, you weren't sure that was such a bad idea. Severen seemed to notice that you weren't exactly against that idea. He shook his head and turned it to the side, letting out a small hoot before he was shaking his finger at you. He said, "I knew I liked you for a reason." But it didn't seem like he was the type to give up. You were quickly proven right. "C'mon, it'll be good for you." He told you, but you severely doubted it. Still, he was pushing open the door and climbing out, and you stared at him as he rounded to the other side. You knew you weren't the type to let him do this every time, and it was more so to pout that you stayed in your seat. He opened the door and held out his hand for you to take, and, after casting a glance towards the diner, you sighed and took it.

A Decision at the Crossroads
A Heartland AU - Chapter 4 – Finale
While Ty went to fetch his phone Amy popped open one of the side panels on the trailer and unsnapped the table that was first in line. She reached her arms wide to grab it and start lifting it out when Ty showed up.
“Whoa easy Amy, I’ll get it.”
“I’m fine.”
“Of course you are now back up please.”
“Thank you Ty.” She said and stepped aside “and 5 of the chairs please.”
“Six actually Kelsey’s coming.”
“Kelsey ?”
“Dr. Burton, my namesake apparently.” He said laying the table on it’s side and unfolding the legs. “Hey, this is nice set up.”
“We take trips with kids, believe me a table is always easier and cleaner than watching them balance plates. Besides it’s more homey and civilized.”
“I’ll file that away” he said maneuvering the table and then placing chairs as Amy opened and gave them a wipe with a damp cloth as well as the table. She had also removed a little basket with a tablecloth sealed in a zip loc bag, and began to spread it. As well as counting out silverware found in the basket as well.
“Ty there’s another basket with plates and more pitchers.” She said watching him walk over as she grabbed one pitcher from her now empty basket and put it on the table.
They set the table together, each handling three settings and Amy ran in for a roll of paper towels. He watched as she took a second to look at the table, nodded and walked over to lower herself into a chair slowly. She was wearing a blue dungaree dress that went down to her knees, it had ¾ sleeves and embroidery along the hem and collar. Obviously a maternity dress, he was captivated by her shape.
“You need to stop staring at me Ty, I’m becoming very self conscious, I already think I look like a beach ball.”
“You don’t, I’m sorry, you look great. Two kids, one on the way, I’m, I don’t know….”
“Three actually, you’re the first to hear, Clint Riley called, they have a foster for us, a young boy named Luke Kashani, he’s nine. Clint’s bringing him Monday.”
“Clint Riley, he’s still around huh. That’s nice, keeping that tradition going.”
“Yeah, Scott, you, Georgie, remember Badger, it’s nice.”
“Mitch mentioned Georgie and something with Lou, he also told me about the divorce.”
“Georgie was an orphan who ran away from her foster family in Okotoks, she stowed away in Grandpa’s pickup and found her way to Heartland. She was a keeper. The divorce is what it was I guess, it’s now amicable with benefits apparently, works for them.”
“Georgie lives with Lou at Heartland ?”
“Lou took a condo in town when she became Mayor and lives there with Katie. We fixed up the loft when I got back from Europe as a nice studio and I lived there alone and then with Mitch for awhile before moving to Saddle River, his family ranch, his parents have an independent living condo in Calgary. Georgie and Quinn are engaged and live in the loft, Grandpa and Lisa live in the house.”
“I heard Jack married Lisa, I saw an article about the Hall of Fame that mentioned it. I’m sorry about your dad Amy, I read about his passing.”
“The death of a legend, it was a nice tribute.”
“I saw a tribute to Lou as Mayor too, ordering the stay in place at home and closing Maggie’s early on definitely seemed to make a difference in the area.”
“It did and I think she’ll be remembered for that, this is her last term, she’s not running again. Enough about Hudson, tell me about you, is there someone special, Kelsey maybe ?”
“Nah, Kelsey and I never, there have been women over the years but I’m free now, I’m picky I guess.”
“Well when it happens you’ll know.”
“You and Mitch look happy.”
“We are, very happy.”
“How’s Jack ?”
“Older, pretty much retired, his arthritis, heart problems, a hard 90, for a former bronc rider and Alberta cowboy not fun.”
“Lisa ?”
“Lisa’s good, the perfect grandmother, she loves the kids. So does Casey, Lyndy adores them both. Mitch’s folks too.”
“Casey, I know this.”
“McMurtry.”
“Right, McMurtry Rodeos, they come around every couple years.”
She noticed quickly enough that he had changed the subject. “Ty ? Are you happy ?”
Ty looked at her and into her eyes, Amy could see that he wasn’t teary but there was disappointment, a small sadness in his face “I guess, I mean I don’t think I’m unhappy.”
“Were you happier yesterday ? Mitch said he thought you might be having a case of the might have beens.”
“I didn’t need to see you for that. The baby was eye popping don’t get me wrong and not in a bad way Amy, you look amazing, really the, well, the high school boyfriend comment, that sort of slammed a world of reality down on me.”
“That’s what we were, we were an actual couple for most of my high school 3rd year, my senior year was a nightmare, we were way better as friends than as a couple Ty, we were a lousy couple.” She was smiling and not being harsh, her tone somewhat softly nostalgic, it was in fact a long time ago.
“Come on, that’s a bit extreme don’t you think ?”
“Really ? You really think ?” She said, again somewhat amused and again not in anything more than the nostalgia of it “we had a good few months, you know Kit and the Quarantine and then I won the Ring of Fire and rather than joining me and perhaps a later bike trip in the summer to see some of the world you decided that you needed to go off alone for a few weeks. So, after the excitement of motels with my dad on tour and while I spent the rest of the summer working and doing what used to be your job on top of mine you came home almost 4 months later with a huge dose of misplaced maturity and Blair. Then Chase stuck his nose in, we were a good couple for 7 months, maybe. Look Ty, I know about what Grandpa did and he told me what led up to that talk and him sending you off. I don’t know what brought you to that point or why you didn’t come home, but it was your decision, we all had to live with your decision.”
“Looking back, I don’t know either honestly.”
“And I don’t know what would have happened if you had but I do know this, my life with Mitch and our kids feels so right to me that I can’t imagine life without him being a part of it, I’m not saying this to hurt you Ty, but your best days are still ahead of you.”
“So this is the honest conversation part we didn’t do back then huh ?”
“This is it.”
“How do you do it and go on together ?”
“You say it, get it out of your system and have sex, then you fix it in the morning.” She answered smiling.
“Well to be fair we weren’t, at the time, you know.” He said smiling.
“That’s true”, Amy agreed and immediately blushed and then agreed with a smirky smile and a nod, “hey, you’ve, you know, since, right ?”
“Huh ?” Then realizing she meant had sex, “oh, oh yeah, no worries.”
“So, you’re still driving a classic truck I see, what’s that an early 70’s GMC ?”
“Yeah,’73, hey, whatever happened to Harley and Old Blue ?”
“After a while Caleb took Harley because, well, it broke my heart to see him every day and he eventually found him a nice home with a couple kids who were going to share him.”
“Sorry, I really wanted to,,,,, forget it. And the truck ?”
“Grandpa kept the truck running and in front of the house for months figuring if nothing else you’d show up in the night and drive it off but you didn’t and one day it wouldn’t start so he hauled it next to Goldie swearing he’d fix it one day.”
“So it’s just sitting there rotting ?”
“Well no actually, about the time Caleb sold Harley I was sick of looking at it so I got rid of it.”
“You sold it.”
“Well, in the interest of honesty, not exactly.”
“What does that mean, exactly ?”
“I attached the promise ring to the ignition key and had it crushed.”
“You had it crushed ?”
“I needed closure Ty, it was invigorating, a grand release of emotions.”
Ty stared at her for a few seconds in shock and then Amy started laughing and then holding her stomach bent over and laughing. “I’m sorry Ty.”
“It’s Ok” he said laughing along with her.
“Oh here, give me your hand.” She said reaching out, she loves it when I laugh “come on silly give me your hand” she prodded seeing the look on his face.
Finally she grabbed his hand and hauled it over, “come here I don’t bite,” gently she turned his palm and lay it over the right side of her belly holding her hand over his. A few seconds later she smiled, “there, feel that ?”
When she stretched out her leg rather than kicking Ty identified a second feeling and realizing it was really no different that any animal understood “that’s a stretch.”
“That’s it” she said gently releasing the pressure. “I think we’ll call her Marion, it’s time. Marion Fleming Cutty.”
“That’s really great, so Lyndy.”
“Lyndy Sarah, Mitch’s grandmother. Jackson Timothy and Marion no middle yet.”
“And Luke was it ?”
“Luke Kashani. I guess we’ll need something for a toast, is there a place to get some wine close by ?
“I have beer for dinner and a couple bottles of champagne I can donate to the cause. You drink ?”
“Oh no, I‘ve had a couple sips of champagne as toasts, wedding night and the like, but not, no, I don’t. Especially pregnant.”
“It was just a question Amy.”
She smiled and nodded, “you wouldn’t by any chance have any ice in there for the water ?”
“There’s an ice machine in the barn for ice packs and stuff.”
“You get the champagne, I’ll do the ice.” She said pushing herself up with a grunt.
He smiled watching her move, almost awkwardly, before turning to the house while she walked slowly into the barn.
She wasn’t at the table when he returned and neither were the pitchers so he walked over to the barn where he found the pitchers full of ice on a small table by the barn door and then heard her on the other side by the paddock. Following her voice he turned around the barn and found her engrossed in conversation with the three rescues she had never met. He stood there watching her and the horses who seemed very anxious to be close. The soft sing song pater of her voice a sweet memory for him, the miracle girl.
She turned and smiled “Oh hey, I saw them and figured I’d say hi. We should probably get them stalled and fed.”
“As soon as the guys get back we’ll get it done, you’re wearing a dress, come on.”
They returned to the table after Ty filled the cooler he carried out with ice as well, as a truck Amy did not know pulled up and an early 40’s woman stepped out and over. She had a welcoming smile and a pretty face.
Amy looked up and smiled, “you must be Kelsey, it’s good to meet you, I’m Amy Fleming, Mitch’s wife” she finished extending her hand.
“Kelsey Burton, good to meet you Amy,”
“Sit, relax, we’re waiting for Mitch and Matt to get back.”
“How far along are you if you don’t mind my asking.”
“Little over 5 months I guess, you have kids ?”
“Two, one about to start high school and one about to go to college. Mitch said this is your third, we never got to three before the arguing got too bad, we married way too young.”
They all turned as Mitch’s truck came onto the property, the large Cummins Diesel was not quiet as it pulled up.
Amy smiled when he got out the cab and opened the back door along with Matt repeating the act on the passenger side.
Ty walked off to grab the cooler he had put by the barn and offered beers to all. Amy poured a few waters on her side of the table as Kelsey helped with the food and Mitch and Matt led the horses into the barn.
Once laid out Kelsey examined the table.
“This is a lot of food you guys.” Kelsey said.
Mitch who had come out the barn wiping his hands on a paper towel glanced over at Amy who grinned and him and made a face “don’t you dare.” She said blushing.
“Still eats her weight ?” Ty asked seeing the exchange only to have a dinner roll thrown his way which he caught.
“Hey, what happened to civilized dinner ?” Ty said laughing before sitting down.
Dinner was long and drawn out. Kelsey and Ty talked about the practice, Matt had sheriff stories and Amy and Mitch talked about adventures of their own and their kids. Amy was surprised at the chemistry between Kelsey and Ty and the looks they passed to each other like old friends but maybe something more. Amy was past the age thing, her dad and Casey and Jack and Lisa proved that. She was not surprised at all that Ty was friends with Kelsey’s kids or that Ty caught every baseball and hockey game her sons played, in and out of school. At one point during a lull in the eating Ty lifted the champagne so that Amy could see.
“Good a time as any.” She said reaching for clean cups and passing them over.
“Champagne, what are we celebrating ?” Mitch asked.
“Us” Amy said as Ty passed cups around after the big pop.
“Why us ?”
“Because sweetheart congratulations are generally tendered when one is told he’s about to become a father, Clint called before, we have a 9 year old foster son arriving Monday morning, Luke Kashani.”
“Luke Kashani, 9 years old, wow.” Mitch repeated.
“Congratulations you two, that’s wonderful” Kelsey announced raising her glass and tapping it to Mitch’s and then Amy’s iced tea that Mitch remembered to get. Soon they were onto 9 year old boy stories and Amy reached out to grab the platter of ribs and dropped them. Not hard but everyone turned to her as she reached for her side.
“Easy girl, mom’s just grabbing for some ribs.” She whispered and then seeing Mitch’s look took his hand as she had Ty’s and then kissed his palm, something she had not done to Ty before placing it on the spot.
“She’s really going at it.” He said smiling and then leaned forward to grab the ribs and bring them closer for Amy who smiled and kissed him before pushing a few onto her plate.
“What do they put in this Cole slaw, it’s always awesome and I can’t figure it out.” Kelsey asked putting some on her plate.
“It’s horseradish” Amy said after swallowing.
“Is this a pregnancy thing ?” Matt asked “heightened palate ?”
Amy shrugged trying to swallow her next bite before answering, “It’s years of studying herbs and alternate remedies. Single ingredients are easy usually unless the tastes are ambiguous like licorice and anise. Or I guess it could be the pregnancy thing” she finished looking up with a smile.
Kelsey was the first to leave, she had to get home to her teenagers. Mitch and Amy said goodbye as they wouldn’t be seeing her in the morning. Matt was game to leave as well, he had an early shift in the morning but promised to stop before they left which was planned for 9:00 AM. Ty helped clear away and helped Mitch with stowing the table and chairs while Amy split the food as Ty insisted they take enough for lunch on the way home. He promised he’s see them in the morning so goodnights were easy.
Later in the evening in the afterglow of their lovemaking Mitch had gone to get some cold water for Amy who settled herself into her current comfortable position, on her left side, pillow between her legs and her arm perched on her belly. Mitch lovingly held the glass out and helped her take a drink without moving much or spilling and then settled as usual behind her, his arm sliding under hers as he leaned forward to kiss her shoulder.
“You had a chance to catch up with Ty ?”
“I did, it was nice.”
“He Ok ?”
“You were a bit right I think, the could have beens but we had a good talk, it went well.”
“Seemed to from my perspective. How about you ? Could have beens ?”
“Not on your life Mitchell Cutty, I couldn’t imagine spending my life with anyone but you.”
“Good to hear and back at you Amy Fleming.”
Amy leaned back as far as she could to catch his lips with hers for a moment before returning to her spot.
In the morning Amy woke to the closing of a car door and a truck start. Peeking out the window she saw Ty’s truck drive off and wondered if he was just getting out without a proper goodbye. When she finally showered and dressed and headed outside with a cup of tea and her breakfast of muffins and clementines she found a note tucked into the trailer door. It said that he was called away for a calving that wasn’t going well but expected to be back by nine when they were scheduled to leave.
Matt arrived after Mitch got his coffee going and decided to wait with them while it perked and join Mitch for a cup. He wasn’t surprised to find Ty gone for an emergency, that was his job as long as Kelsey had kids to get off to school and he was fine with it.
Before he left Matt got a call from Ty and explained that he was almost done but rather than make Mitch and Amy wait he’d meet them for their goodbye as a scenic pull off about 5 miles down the road south, the direction they were heading anyway.
Matt helped them pack up and load the horses, made sure they knew where to go and watched and waved as Amy pulled out first followed by Mitch and the trailer.
They parked and leaned against the overlook fence when Mitch received a text that Ty was on the way. He joined them 10 minutes later full of apologies that they discounted as completed unwarranted and totally understood.
Mitch went first and shook Ty’s hand before a brief bro hug and then walked off to close the trailer that they had opened for the horses benefit.
Amy walked over to Ty and gently ran a finger gently across his brow to move his hair away from his eyes.
“I’d forgotten just how green they were.” She said dropping her hand and smiling.
“Back home ?”
“I have to tell them Ty but we’ll leave contact up to you.”
“Thanks.”
Amy heard the door trailer handle locked into place and took a step forward to reach around Ty for a hug before stepping back.
“Find yourself a woman who loses herself in those eyes Ty and then hold on.”
“I’ll try ?”
“She can be a little older you know.”
“She’s my boss Amy.”
“And soon to be your partner, think about it, you’re a good catch with a big heart Ty Borden, it’s time to stop running. Oh, and I was technically your boss for a while there.” Then she leaned forward and kissed each of his cheeks gently. “Don’t be a stranger, you’d make Grandpa’s day with a call.”
“I will.”
“Goodbye Ty, it’s nice knowing you’re doing well.”
He walked her to her truck as Mitch got into the cab of his and Ty helped Amy in and watched her settle and buckle up before closing her door.
“Bye Amy, It was great seeing you and meeting Mitch.”
Amy smiled and nodded as Ty stepped back and she shifted into drive and drove out followed by Mitch who smiled and waved.
A few miles down the road Amy smiled when the next song was announced and she switched on the truck to truck radio to have Mitch join in when she started singing.
Together, they were the perfect couple.
“Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growing like a breeze
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads
All my memories gather 'round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye ……..”
The End.

Previous Part: Trailer Next Part: Chapter 2
April 2016
Maya woke up late. It was half past 9 and she was suppose to teach class in an hour and a half. But Maya couldn’t get out of bed for some reason. Her eyes were open and her mind was awake, but her body was resisting all her attempts to even sit up in her bed. It’s hard to wake up when your inner state is in complete chaos. Maya knew she wasn’t physically tired, but emotionally and mentally she was far beyond exhausted. Maya laid there, thinking about the events from the night before.
Maya’s boyfriend, Caleb, had ditched her again at the restaurant they were supposed to meet at after his work. She waited for 2 hours and then came back home. Caleb eventually came to Maya’s house around 10pm. Apparently he had ran into a friend and they went for drinks and he “totally forgot” he had promised to meet Maya at the restaurant. Maya was angry. This was not the first time Caleb had “totally forgot” about her, and she also knew this was not the last. As expected, they fought till late at night. Cruel words were thrown around and tears were shed (only by Maya). In the end, Caleb promised he wouldn’t do it again. Maya accepted the promise half-heartedly.
Truth be told Maya was far too numb from her relationship. At this point, she was mostly in the relationship because it was what was expected from a girl her age. If it was up to her mom, she would have already been married by now. After all, Maya was 22 and being an immigrant with very conservative and traditional parents, her mom had insisted that she and Caleb start considering marriage. However, Maya knew somewhere inside she was not meant to be with him. She knew this relationship was like a time bomb that was just waiting to explode. But,Maya was afraid that if she broke up with him, she would somehow be in more pain than she already was. Fear of loneliness is bigger than fear of being in a bad relationship.
Meanwhile, Maya somehow was managing her first year in a Ph.D. program for English at University of Central Arkansas (UCA), and working a part time job at Teavana, a shop that sells tea, in a small town in Arkansas, United States. Maya’s life wasn’t that terrible, besides her toxic relationship and her heavy course load. Plus, she was teaching an undergraduate class, which was always a hassle.
Maya finally managed to get off of the bed after a few minutes of intense deliberation of skipping her classes today. She thought about how nice it would be if she didn’t have a class, or didn’t have a paper to write, or wasn’t grading assignments for at least one day. However, this was the life she had chosen for herself. The writer in her wanted to take the long road, and so she did. Getting a Ph.D. in English was not a requirement, but Maya rarely ever did anything easy. Perhaps, having a higher than an average IQ came with its own difficulties.
It’s true, that Maya had taken an IQ test in elementary school, and was apparently in the top 10 percentile. At the time, her parents had wanted their daughter to become a doctor or an engineer and use her advanced brain for something that will get her the big paychecks. But of course, Maya was known to disappoint others. Nothing that her parents planned for her ever worked out in their favor. This is why when she told them she was getting a degree in English, they didn’t even bother convincing her otherwise.
Maya did have something to look forward to today, and it was the fact that she only had one class to teach and then she was free the rest of the day. Of course, the rest of the time would be spent in the library or on her computer working on her thesis, but still, she at least didn’t have to deal with people. This small reason gave Maya the motivation to go to her class, stand in front of her students, and pretend like she knew what she was talking about.
Maya’s class ended smoothly. Besides the usual naive questions that students asked, she was able to get through the material she needed to cover. To Maya, that was what was important, since the students were to have an exam in a few weeks. Maya packed her things and headed out the lecture hall. The building where she had her class was gigantic, and her class was on the fourth floor. She had all her papers in her hand as she was walking. She had forgotten to bring her folder where she usually puts all of her papers, and so she was just trying to carry all of the papers in her hand. However, carrying 100 papers from your Introductory English I class without a clip or a folder is harder than it seems. Especially since she was also carrying her other bag which consisted of books she was reading for her own graduate class.
She continued walking and reached a turn in the hallway. She took a turn and suddenly one of the papers from the stack flew out of her hand and landed farther away from where she was. Her gaze followed the paper and she ran after to grab the paper without dropping the others. She finally reached the paper and so she bent down to grab it. Though, before she could bend down she saw a figure bending down in front of her to grab the paper. The person was a man, and he slowly got back up with the paper in his hand. Maya initially didn’t look up to see who it was, as she was too embarrassed. He extended his hand with the paper to return it back to Maya.
“Here you go” the man said with a thick accent.
Maya slowly accepted “Oh, thank you!” She finally managed to look at the man who had so kindly helped her out. As she managed to look up however, she was surprised to find how beautiful the man looked.
Maya’s mind immediately questioned whether this man was a student here or not. From the look, Maya could tell he was Korean. Maya would know since her entire graduate career was built on studying Korean culture and literature, as her thesis was all about Korean culture and its impact on Korean fiction.
What was most intriguing about the man that was standing in front of Maya at the moment was his hair. Her attention immediately drifted to his hair, as it was bright red, and the way it was styled it made it clear to her that this man was definitely not a Arkansas native. Maya realized she probably had been staring for far too long, and so she decided to cut the silence.
“I am sorry, I just forgot my folder at home today, so I am having to carry all these separately. Thanks for your help! Maya smiled.
The man’s expressions were ambiguous, but when he saw Maya smiling he returned the smile. Maya began to wonder if he understood. He just said, “Ah, no problem!”
Just then another man that was standing behind him called his name “Yah, Taehyung. I think it’s this way!” The person was speaking in Korean. Maya was able to understand their conversation because Maya knew Korean. In fact, despite not being Korean, she had to learn Korean and had to take multiple exams to prove that she can speak Korean for he her thesis. After all, she can’t talk about Korean fiction in her thesis without actually reading Korean books.
But Maya didn’t take interest in just Korea. She was also fascinated by many other cultures. For example, she studied abroad for a whole year in Brazil, when she was an undergraduate, and she also took a trip to Marakesh the summer after she graduated from high school. Maya loved cultures in general, and she was constantly trying to implement different cultures in her writing. In fact, that is exactly why she chose this college, as the program she was well-known for their diverse faculty and interesting work. As much as she disliked some aspects of graduate school, she also knew she was at the right place. Unlike the men in front of her. They all seemed lost.
Maya had picked up on a few different things so far. First, the man that had just helped her was someone named Taehyung. Second, the person talking to him also had very strange hair and there was a whole group of them behind Taehyung. Finally, they all seemed to be looking for a particular place, or at least that’s she picked up from the conversation that was taking place amongst the group.
When Taehyung’s name was called he gently bowed towards Maya and went back to the group of strangely haired guys behind him. Maya stood there a second longer as she couldn’t look away from the group of guys in front of her, but eventually she realized she had a huge stack of papers in her hands and she could not afford to lose them, so she began to walk away.
However, as she began to walk away, someone behind her yelled “Excuse me! Excuse me, ma’am! Maya immediately turned around, because she recognized the voice. She knew it was the same voice. It was the guy, Taehyung.
“Yes?” Maya asked as she saw the entire group staring at her when she turned around. She gulped as she began to realize that each guy looked more handsome than the other with their fancy hair and makeup. Taehyung looked over at the guy with the greenish hair. The guy responded in Korean “Go ahead, you ask her”
Taehyung hesitated, but came up towards Maya with a piece of paper. “Hi...umm...do you know this place?” Taehyung said and extended his hand with the paper. Maya slowly took the paper in her hand.
The paper stated the address to a college. However, the college that was written on the paper was not University of Central Arkansas, it was just University of Arkansas. Along with the address, was also the title of the event that these guys are presumably planning to attend.
“Breaking Down Eastern Cultural Barriers With Kpop”
Maya was shocked to see the title of the event, since she had heard about the event before from her advisor. In fact, her advisor, Dr. Kelly was the one hosting this event, as Dr. Kelly’s entire literary career was based on writing about East Asian music, and was a well-known figure in the field of cultural studies. Maya knew about her event, but she didn’t plan on attending it since the event was being held at University of Arkansas.
It was at that point that Maya had started putting together all the puzzle pieces. She realized that the strangely haired men were most likely some Kpop idols that Dr. Kelly had invited for the event. Maya knew about Kpop and listened to some of the music , however, she was never a hard core Kpop listener. Her music taste varied from day to day, so despite her thesis being on Korean culture, she wasn’t a fan of any particular groups. Maya knew that Kpop and the Hallyu wave was a great tool to transcend music into cultures, and sometimes Maya wished that Korean literature was also as famous as their music.
Maya suddenly felt more obligated to help them out, not only because they were probably celebrities, but also because her advisor was probably having a panic attack since the guys weren’t there yet and the event was supposed to start in 45 minutes.
Taehyung noticed that Maya was quiet, so he asked his question again “Umm, so do you know this place?
Maya nodded. “Yeah, I know this place...but this place is not here.” Maya looked towards the group who was all staring at each other and then back at her. Suddenly the one with the greenish hair began to walk up towards Taehyung and her. He was a smidge taller than Taehyung and had the most proportionate body Maya had ever seen. As he began walking towards Maya, for some odd reason, she felt a bit nervous. He had an authoritative aura to him.
Maya quickly looked away from him as she noticed he was staring at her. He stood up in front of her with a questioning look on his face. “Hi, I am sorry, were you just saying this place is not here? So...so where is it?” The man spoke more fluently than Taehyung, and barely had an accent.
Maya felt bad. She didn’t know how to tell the man that they were at the completely wrong university. She wondered where their staff was. If these guys were really celebrities, don’t they go around with their staff?
“Umm, well this university is University of Central Arkansas, but the university you are supposed to go to is called University of Arkansas. This college is in Little Rock, and you are currently in a town called Conway.” Maya tried to speak slowly, but she also didn’t want to make it seem like she was trying to dumb it down for them, so she kept a consistent pace.
The man with the greenish hair became distressed. He took a deep breath. The guys in back came up to stand next to him all wondering what was going on. “Namjoon, what is it?” one of them asked in Korean. The man with the greenish hair, whose name was most likely Namjoon, at least that’s what Maya presumed, repeated what Maya said in Korean.
All of the guys became distressed now. Maya felt guilty. She thought about how she could help, but she needed to know for sure if her previous assumptions were true.
“I am sorry, but I am assuming you guys are here for the Kpop event? Correct? The one being hosted by Dr. Kelly?”
Namjoon nodded with enthusiasm. “Yes, that’s exactly why we are here. Can you help us? We are from Korea and we need to attend this. Do you know about this event?”
Maya smiled slightly at how hard Namjoon was trying to speak in English. “Yeah, I know this event. Dr. Kelly is my professor. I am a graduate student here. My name is Maya. I can actually speak in Korean, so we can communicate in Korean if that’s easier.” Maya extended her hand for a handshake towards Namjoon.
The man was still in shock from Maya’s words, but when he saw Maya’s extended hand, he decided to introduce himself.
“Hi, I am Namjoon. You can also call me Rap Mon,” Namjoon says in Korean.
(Author’s note: This is 2016 so Namjoon’s name back then was still Rap Monster)
Namjoon extended his hand to meet with Maya’s hand. Moreover, the moment that changed Namjoon and Maya’s lives forever started here, in a small hallway of a building at University of Central Arkansas.
As Namjoon’s hand touched Maya’s, his gaze met with hers as well. However, as he looked into Maya’s eyes and touched her hand, something extraordinary happened.
Namjoon unanticipatedly found himself in a vortex of images appearing and disappearing all at once, some lasting longer than others, some more faded than others. There were some that had no color to them and some that were extremely vivid. There were some sounds that he could hear, others were just mere murmurs, nothing audible. These images captured his entire attention span as his entire cognitive system flooded it’s resources to the novel stimuli. There was one thing common between all these images. All of them contained him and the woman he was shaking hands with in that moment.
One moment Namjoon was standing on the stage and looked out into the crowd and found the woman looking back at him….he was now suddenly sitting in his studio and turned around and found the woman sleeping on the couch which he kept in his studio... then he suddenly saw himself hugging the woman tightly feeling the same feelings he would feel as if he had just hugged a close loved one...the woman said something, but he couldn’t hear her...He then saw the woman looking at the mirror and crying as she saw herself….”I hate myself” she whispered...next he saw the woman being dragged by several hooded figures through a dark and abandoned looking hallway, as she was crying and screaming for help...he then saw himself on the stage again, this time he was going up to the microphone with his brothers and taking a deep breath with tears pouring from his eyes… “I have something to say” he said in the microphone…
Namjoon suddenly blinked and the images disappeared. Namjoon abruptly took his hand away from the woman’s hand and looked away. He was back in the small hallway in that small university where he was not supposed to be at. He felt breathless, like he had just walked a thousand miles and also felt a bit dizzy from overstimulation of his neurons in his brain. He looked around to see if others around him saw the same images he had just seen, but saw no sign of strange behavior, except from her. He noticed the woman was definitely behaving strangely as she slowly took her hand back once Namjoon removed his hand from hers. She ran her fingers through her hair and blinked a few more times. Namjoon began to wonder whether she had also experienced what he just had experienced.
However, his thought was interrupted as his bandmate and brother Seokjin extended his hand towards Maya and began introducing himself.
“Hi, I am Jin,” the bandmate said in Korean. This time Maya was a bit hesitant to shake Seokjin’s hand. She looked towards Namjoon again, before she returned Seokjin’s handshake.
“I am Maya. Maya Shroff”
The other members also took turns shaking hands with Maya and introducing themselves. Namjoon kept looking over again to see if they also had experienced the weird images. However, again none of them seemed to display any strange expressions. So far Namjoon only knew Maya’s name and that she somehow knew Korean, but some part of him had already started to feel like he needed to stay away from her.
After shaking hands with the maknae, Jungkook, Maya turned towards Namjoon again to speak to him. She didn’t know much about Namjoon, but from the little information she had gathered, she realized he was the main guy in the group. “I was just thinking, if you guys want I can take you to the college. The college is about 35 minutes away from here. If we leave now, we can still make it in time for the event.” she said.
Namjoon began speaking as soon as Maya finished the sentence, “NO!”
Everyone else around him was taken aback by his assertive decline of Maya’s offer.
He continued “...I mean, no it’s not necessary. We can handle it. Thank you!”
“Namjoon-ah, I know this is kind of weird since we don’t know this girl, but considering the fact that we running late, we should just take the offer. I still don’t know where manager Sejin and the other staff members are...we don’t want to miss the event because of our stupidity.” Hoseok, the dance prodigy of the group, whispered in Namjoon’s ear.
“We can’t just accept people’s help, when we don’t know them, Hobi.” Namjoon retorted.
“Well do you have any other options?” Hobi replied. Namjoon was silent. He looked back at Maya, who was awkwardly waiting for their response to her offer. She knew they were hesitant since they probably worried she was some die hard fan and would take advantage of them or something, but she really had no interest in that. Maya viewed Kpop idols as just humans that got trapped in system of the Hallyu industry, when all they really wanted was to make music, sing, and dance. She felt that behind all their hair and makeup were a lot of sacrifices. She didn’t really know anything about the group that was standing in front of her. She didn’t know the trajectory of their fame nor the type of music they made.
As Maya waited, Namjoon decided to give his staff members another call. The other group members waited. He really didn’t want to take Maya’s help. Something inside him told him not to get too close to her.
After a few attempts, Namjoon gave up. Not even their stylists were picking up their phones. What was going on?
You see, a couple hours ago, the group and their staff had made a bet about who would get to the event first. They had went into separate vans from the airport and decided that Seokjin, the eldest one in the group of 7, would drive and the rest of the guys would help him navigate to the event. This was a terrible idea, of course, but none of them thought that the guys would actually go to the wrong university. What made things even more unfortunate was that the cellular network at the event’s venue was terrible, which meant the staff members couldn’t pick up their calls. The staff had assumed they were still on their way.
Namjoon’s anxiety was getting worse. He even sent emails to their manager to get them to respond, but the manager didn’t see the email.
Maya became tired of waiting and her hands were beginning to hurt from holding on to the papers. She decided she would try and explain to the guys that she was not some creepy fan and that they could trust her.
“Hey guys, I know this is a weird situation and you are probably having trouble trusting me. I have no idea where your staff is. But seriously, I don’t mind driving you there. I promise, you can trust me. I am just a graduate student in English and the reason I want to help is because my professor is in charge of the event.”
The guys all looked at Namjoon. Because as Maya had correctly suspected, Namjoon really was the leader of the group and he also was the only one in the group who could speak English fluently. The rest of the members trusted Namjoon more than they trusted themselves. They knew that whatever decision he made, would be the best for the group.
Maya saw that they were all waiting for Namjoon’s response, but it seemed like Namjoon was still not convinced by Maya’s explanation.
“Okay, well how about this...how about I call my professor and let her know you guys are lost. You guys can decide with her what you want to do. Sound good?” Maya tried once again to help them.
Namjoon took a few more seconds to consider her response. He really didn’t know if this was a safe idea, because he knew that even one small mistake could really risk his group’s reputation, and he also was well aware of how spread out their fan base was. It also didn’t help that he had that weird dreamlike experience earlier, which made him afraid to go close to this woman.
Nonetheless, when he looked around and saw that the members were just waiting on him to say ‘yes’, he finally gave in to the idea. He thought, what’s the worst that can happen from a phone call to her professor?
“Sure, that sounds okay” Namjoon said hesitantly.
Maya wanted to take out her phone from her bag to call her professor, but because there were so many things in her hand, she was struggling to find it. Jimin, the other dance master in the group noticed Maya’s struggle, and immediately took the papers out of her hand, so she can get her phone out of her bag.
“Oh, thank you” Maya said, as she noticed Jimin was trying to help. She was still really taken aback by how kind these men were. For a split second she thought about her boyfriend, and how he didn’t even help her carry all her bags when they would go shopping together. It almost felt like she had forgotten that not all men have to be jerks, since the ones that she had met were all one worse than the other.
Maya finally managed to pull out her phone from her bag and called her professor. As the phone rang, she could feel all 7 guys staring at her. Maya put the phone on speaker, so that they can hear her. She could tell that Namjoon was still hesitant about the whole situation and wanted to make sure he trusted her.
Finally, Dr. Kelly picked up. “Hello-- Dr. Kelly?” Maya said.
There was initially no response, just bunch of sounds.
“Hello, Dr. Kelly? It’s Maya…”
Finally, the lady spoke.
“Hey, Maya...sorry the signal is really bad here...let me go outside” Dr. Kelly said. She was surprised to receive a call from her student all of the sudden, but felt like it had to be important if Maya had called.
“Hi, Dr. Kelly?...Can you hear me?... I am calling about an important situation. I am not sure if you know this but...umm...the group that’s suppose to be at the event today accidentally came to our university.”
Maya was speaking in English, but the guys all gulped, as they realized she was talking about them on the phone. They knew once their staff found out they would get in trouble.
“What?” Dr. Kelly responded.
Maya thought she still couldn’t hear, so she repeated what she said before. “The Kpop group that’s suppose to attend the event accidentally came to UCA instead of the venue.”
Namjoon interrupted, “tell her it’s BTS. We are BTS.”
Maya said, “Yeah, the BTS group is here. They got lost and came here instead. I ran into them.”
“Yeah I heard the first time, but how did this happened. What are we going to do?” Dr. Kelly seemed frazzled. “Is there a way, you can drive them here.” Dr. Kelly added.
Maya pursed her lips, as she stared at Namjoon. Namjoon sighed. He took the phone from Maya’s hand and began speaking.
“Hi Dr. Kelly. This is the leader of BTS, Rap Monster. Ms. Shroff here offered us a ride already, but we were wondering if we can speak to our staff. It’s better that they pick us up here.”
Dr. Kelly responded,“listen, I will let your staff know. But I think you need to leave with Maya right now, because by the time your staff leaves and brings you here the event will have already started.”
“Can I at least talk to my manager?” Namjoon insisted.
“Sure, let me go get him.” Dr. Kelly gave in to his request.
Dr. Kelly went and found manager Sejin who was talking someone on the phone already. She told him about the situation and he immediately took the phone from her hand and began speaking to him.
“Hello, Namjoon-ah?”Sejin began speaking in Korean.
“Manager-nim, we are at the wrong university. I am not sure what to do.” Namjoon complained.
“Yes, this lady, Dr. Kelly, told me. You should just come here with her student.” Sejin suggested.
“Are you sure?” Namjoon tried one more time. “Yeah, it’s almost started and it’s faster if she just drives you here instead of us trying to come there and pick you up. We’ll handle everything. It’s okay.”
Namjoon sighed again. “Alright, if you say so. Thanks.”
Namjoon ended the phone call and gave it back to Maya.
“Alright, I guess we are coming with you.” Namjoon said to Maya in Korean. He figured at this point, she was probably fluent.
“Great, I have a minivan, so we should be able to fit. Just follow me.” Maya said.
The members followed Maya’s lead to the campus garage where her car was parked. Once they got to the car, they all tried to figure out the seating. Namjoon tried to sit in the back sit, but he was forced to seat in the passenger sit in the front, next to Maya.
“You are the leader. You should sit in the front.” Yoongi, the other rapper of the group, whispered in Namjoon’s ear while smirking.
Namjoon rolled his eyes and sat down in the front. Maya got into the driver’s seat and turned around to count how many people there were.
“What happened?” Taehyung said as he noticed Maya was counting.
“Oh, I was just checking to see every color of the rainbow is present in this van.” Maya jokes. However, no one laughed except Jimin and Taehyung.
Namjoon gave Maya a death glare as she turned back. What was his problem? Maya thought.
“Alright then.” Maya started the car and drove in silence. There were whispers and side conversation in the back of the car. However, Maya remained silent. She was thankful that she didn’t have classes the rest of the day. Who would have thought she would be in her van with Kpop idols today.
It finally sank in for Maya, that she was really driving celebrities around. She should be more excited, right? After all, there are probably girls and guys out there practically dying to see these men. She wondered how popular this BTS group was. She made a note to herself, to check out there music later on.
After 10 minutes into the drive, she decided to break the ice again by talking to the man sitting next to her.
“So, how long have you been in the Kpop industry?” Maya asked innocently.
Namjoon didn’t say anything at first as he was too busy tracing the road to the venue on his iPhone maps app, making sure the girl that was driving them was on the right way to college, and wasn’t kidnapping them or something. But he realized the question was aimed at him, so he responded.
“Umm, we debuted in 2013. So about 3 years.” Namjoon responded and went back to his maps.
“That’s cool.” Maya answered. She really didn’t know what to say to that. However, someone in the back seemed to be more curious about her.
“How come you speak Korean so fluently?” Taehyung asked from the back.
Maya smiled. “Oh, I am a Ph.D. student and I am studying Korean fiction for my thesis, so I had to learn the language.”
“Wow, you are so smart! I am so glad we ran into you. Right, hyung?” Taehyung said referring to Namjoon.
Namjoon didn’t respond. Again, someone else in the back answered. “Yeah, who would have thought we would have found someone who speaks our language in a place like this,” Hoseok added.
“Yeah Arkansas definitely has a very small Korean population,” Maya laughed.
“So, how did you get interested in Korean literature?” someone else from the back asked. It was the grayish haired man, Yoongi.
“Well, I have always been interested in cultures. I just happened to read a lot of books as a kid, and became more interested in Korean literature when I read more books for my East Asian Literature class during undergraduate. So then I thought well, it would be awesome to do some research on how Korean culture shapes a lot of the fictional stories that come from Korea, and how we can bring those stories to the western world. I feel like there is just this barrier between the East and West, and I think books and even music are the best way to break that barrier, you know?” Maya stopped speaking as she realized she had went on a full blown rant. But she couldn’t help it, this was one of those topics she was really passionate about.
“Ah, sorry, guys! I got a little carried away. It’s my thesis topic so I get a bit too excited,” Maya laughed and looked through the rearview mirror to see everyone’s reaction. She saw Taehyung’s mouth hung open, and then she saw Yoongi nodding just slightly before going back to look unamused.
“You are really cool, Maya-ssi” Jimin brightly smiled and responded.
“Aww, thank you! You guys seem cool too.”
Maya turned to look at Namjoon, who was staring at her, but as soon as she made eye contact with him he turned away pretending not to care.
During the rest of the car ride, the guys and Maya continued asking questions from each other back and forth. Maya learned a lot about BTS and the type of music they make. She was surprised to hear that this was not their first time in America. She wondered how big their fan base must be. Maya knew there were a lot of American fans of Kpop, but had never looked into how big that number must be. Maya had not quite realized that the group sitting in her car was at the verge of breaking some big music records with the amount of fans they had. 2016 was the year when BTS was about to breakout big in the music scene. There trajectory was going straight up. Of course, by the time Maya would realize this, she would already be in too deep in too their world.
They soon arrived at University of Arkansas, and Maya parked the car at the auditorium where the event was being held. The guys all got out of the car and followed Maya’s lead, as she led them backstage of the auditorium. She turned around to see if they were following and noticed they all had their face masks on and some even put on their baseball caps. Maya was intrigued by their behavior as they started walking quickly almost pushing her aside and getting in front of her.
It was as if the 7 sweet guys she had met had just transformed into a mafia gang. She couldn’t understand what their purpose was of them walking like they were about to go rob a bank.
One of them whispered to her as they passed “We have to rush before they find us.” She couldn’t pick up on who said it.
She now was following the guys as they led her backstage of the auditorium. Thankfully, they still had 5 minutes to spare before the event started. Once inside, the staff of the group and stage managers all took over. Maya was overwhelmed at how many people were back there. She didn’t realize how big this event was. Maya just stood aside and watched all the chaos. She could hear screaming and shouting outside on the stage and she peeked through the curtains to see how many people were there. Her eyes went wide as she saw the amount of people in the place. There were literally people standing outside the auditorium pushing each other to get a better view of the stage.
Maya realized that there was no way these people were there just to see her professor’s panel. They had to be there for BTS. Now it also made sense to Maya why the guys rushed to get inside the auditorium. They didn’t want to be found by their fans.
It finally hit Maya that the group of guys that she had just drove were not just some ordinary guys. This was Maya’s first glimpse into BTS’s world and she was already overwhelmed.
Soon the event started and she watched professor’s panel from the backstage screen. After Dr. Kelly’s panel, Dr. Kelly invited CEO of BigHit on to the stage. Maya was shocked when she saw the man walk up on to the stage. Where had she seen him before? Maya learned at that time that BTS was under a company called BigHit and that their CEO was someone named Bang Shi Hyuk. That man seemed familiar.
Mr. Bang Shi Hyuk entered on the stage, and him and Dr. Kelly talked about how BTS and other Kpop groups are a tool that can break the barriers. Maya was really engrossed as he talked about how BTS was formed and the ways in which Kpop industry has changed over time.
In the short span, Maya was learning a lot about the world BTS was from, and she realized that the CEO was quite knowledgeable as well from the way he was speaking in English. But in her mind, she was still trying to remember where she had seen the man before.
After Mr. Bang was finished, Dr. Kelly stayed on stage to introduce BTS. As she announced their name, the group of guys that were just in the car with Maya a few minutes ago, now all walked on to the stage wearing suits. Maya was awestruck at how they transformed from being just ordinary men to idols.
As they went up on to the stage the lights dimmed and they began to perform. Maya watched the performance closely. She had seen Kpop music videos, so she wasn’t surprised that the guys were dancing, but it was still strange to see that the same guys she had just met in the hallway were now performing in front of a loud screaming audience.
There were fanchants and the audience was singing along with the boys. Maya couldn’t help but slightly smile at the way they all moved. Her eyes went towards Namjoon a few times, as he looked a lot less stressed now compared to before. His complete concentration was on his performance. The deep voice during his rap portions filled the auditorium sending goosebumps down Maya’s spine.
When their performances ended, Maya found herself clapping like the audience out in the auditorium. She felt a rush of excitement and contentment as they walked passed her when they walked back from the stage.
Jungkook quickly smiled and waved as he passed her and she returned the wave. Suddenly she heard her name being called, and so she looked to her side to find the source of the voice. It was actually Dr. Kelly that was calling her over as she stood next to Mr. Bang. Maya was confused about what Dr. Kelly could possibly want from her. Maya walked over to her. For some reason she felt nervous walking up to talk to Mr. Bang, but she couldn’t understand why.
“This is my student, Maya.” Dr. Kelly introduced Maya to Mr. Bang.
“Hi, nice to meet you” Maya bowed as she realized this was much more appropriate considering he was Korean.
“Nice to meet you, Maya. I heard you brought the boys here. I just wanted to thank you. You really saved the day today!” Mr. Bang said.
“Oh, it’s okay. I am glad I ran into them,” Maya shyly responded. She thought, what could she possibly say to the CEO of a Korean music entertainment company
“Well, Dr. Kelly thank you for inviting us. This was a great event,” Mr. Bang began talking to Dr. Kelly again.
“Ah, no the pleasure is completely ours. It’s not everyday that we get to see such influential people out here in Arkansas. Right, Maya?”
“Right,” Maya replied.
The conversation between Dr. Kelly and Mr. Bang continued talking, and Maya decided she should just keep quiet. Maya often had the tendency to overstep her boundaries and she didn’t want to risk something like that in front of such famous people.
However, as Maya was standing there, she felt someone walk up behind her so she turned around. It turned out to be Taehyung.
“Hey!” Maya replied as she was surprised to see him walk up behind her.
She saw the rest of the group was also with him.
“What’s up?” She asked curiously.
“We just wanted to say thanks to you, Maya-ssi” Jimin responded. “It was very sweet of you to help us.”
“Ah, no worries guys. I feel like I just got to see a free BTS concert, so I am definitely not going to complain” Maya laughed.
Some of the guys awkwardly laughed at her lame joke. Others looked unamused. Namjoon came more towards the front and looked towards her. Maya felt her breath hitch again.
“Seriously, we are very grateful for your help. Good luck with your studies.” Namjoon said with a very serious and authoritative tone.
“Thank you” was all Maya would mutter as she felt a bit intimidated by his ‘leader’ voice.
After that day, Maya looked into BTS. She felt like she at least needed to know who these men were that she had met. Little did she know that once you fall into the BTS wormhole, there was no way out.
Within the span of few days, she had engulfed the entirety of BTS discography. She found herself thinking more and more about them as time passed. However, what she thought about the most, wasn’t just the group.
It was one particular instance she had experienced that day. Maya kept replaying the weird dreamlike sequence of images she had experienced the moment she had shaken hands with Namjoon. She hadn’t really thought too much of those images that day, but as time went on, her mind drifted back to that moment. She couldn’t remember all the images though. She remembered bits and pieces, and she kept trying to repeat them in her head to remember them.
Meanwhile, Namjoon and the rest of BTS had continued on with the tour that they were on across North America. After their short stop in Arkansas they had went west towards LA where they had their next concert.
The guys had forgotten the weird experience they had in Arkansas as their lives went on. However, for Namjoon it was impossible to remove those images in his head. He kept wondering why he experienced it. Was it a daydream? Was he just imagining? Why were those images so vivid yet so faded?
Namjoon sat on the plane back to Seoul after BTS had finished the tour in North America, and thought back to the images. He found himself thinking about Maya. However, he stopped himself as he realized instead of Maya, there was someone else he should be thinking about. Among all the chaos of the tour, he had almost forgotten about his girlfriend, Choi Ji Hyu.

Red&Toby w/ thot: What IF Eddie reads Lond Gaz & Andre dead, Arnie spy hunter, BUT NO info on Abe. Wud Eddie be prompted to write Clinton/Arnie on assumption his msg to Andre never got delivered? Eddie NOT stupid/might even guess about Abigail now he knows Anna's a spy. IF YES, cud dispatch rider be on way to Wakefield w/orders arrest Abe, but Bobby T got her word SO: Bang, down goes the rider!! NOW THAT would make Eddie a force to still be reckoned w/ even if ocean away. So many possibilities!!
Red&Toby w/ thot on Abe’s personal issue based in part on tweets we saw. What if Dick’s somehow gotten a hold of Sprout again. Both Abe AND Mary will do ANYTHING to save little Thomas if he is at risk. The tweet asked what if Simcoe taking revenge on Dick & he gets killed—or we’d say maybe beat to shite like Simcoe did in real life—so Abe has to decide between going after Simcoe and winning the war.
Red&Toby since our recent thot on Eddie ran out of room: IF IF IF Eddie is scribbling to NY about Abe, that would certainly put Eddie back on GW’s radar cuz Mr. Cabbage Farmer hasn’t got coin to reach Eddie in England. To your point on Simcoe: He’s punching someone out in new trailer, but can’t see who is: Dick??? But what if Simcoe sent some1 to London to abduct Eddie to get him back to US so Simcoe can personally settle things? IF Simcoe is concerned about Eddie lurking maybe take offensive
Red&Toby. We kind a sorta froze the new trailer, but it was really lousy quality. BUT we could tell that Simcoe is punching a guy wearing casual shirt & vest AND he has a big, bushy beard. We know from Caleb’s S4 bio that he gets caught up in Arnie’s drag net, and that he’s very weak & vulnerable. Getting smashed in the kisser by Simcoe would certainly make us weak & vulnerable.
I guess all of this really depends on how many fucks Hewlett actually gives about Abe at this point. Sure, he has absolutely no fondness for Abe – but does he really despise him enough to involve himself again? From an ocean away, after he’s gotten out of that mess and is trying to forget all his woes? Knowing that endangering Abe may lead to endangering Anna? The Hewlett we see go to Andre in 3.09 is not a man afire with vengeance or with patriotic zeal. He’s jaded. Defeated. Disillusioned and weary. He makes a point of saying that although every man’s duty is to the king, every man’s soul is his, and he’s there because he’s doing his duty one last time.
Hewlett does know about Abe and Anna, and he may indeed suspect Abigail, and I think that his knowledge may indeed come into play at some point – but I think that he’s going to have to be prompted for it. Someone’s going to have to actually demand to know what he knows or otherwise give him good reason to get involved again. Given his disillusionment and his utter lack of personal attachment to Andre … I don’t think he has enough attachment to Andre, desire for vengeance against Abe, or loyalty to the crown anymore to voluntarily involve himself again just because that asshole who never invited him to dinner is dead.
As for Abe – Dick “getting a hold” of Sprout is no longer an issue. Richard is on Abe’s side now: “On better terms with his son in Season 4, Richard actively assists Abe in his schemes, teaching his son how to avoid bloodshed.”
Also, I’ve always thought people overplayed the enmity between Simcoe and Richard. Richard has plenty of reason to despise Simcoe, yeah, but up until 3.10 at least, what is Richard to Simcoe? A gnat. A prop in season 1, to be shot not out of any personal rancor but as a means to an end, and thereafter a minor inconvenience. Dick got to thumb his nose a bit at Simcoe in 3.10, yeah, and I don’t doubt that Simcoe resents that, but I’ve always thought frankly ridiculous the idea that Simcoe would go out of his way to get even with Richard when Simcoe has so many people who have given him such better motive for revenge. Like, once Abe, Hewlett, Robert Rogers, and anyone else who Simcoe knows has literally tried to kill him are all dead, then Simcoe can bother with that guy who – gasp! – called him an amateur once!
Maybe it’ll happen, and then I’ll be the frankly ridiculous one for shooting my mouth off like this. Who knows. But yeah, I never understood why people on Twitter played up that “rivalry” so much.
I do think that’s probably Caleb getting introduced to Simcoe’s fist, though. Which fits with the hints about Caleb getting caught by Arnold, with whom we know Simcoe will be working.

(Decided it is finally time to post a somewhat more in depth description of Aiden and Benji’s backstories. I know many people were curious, and I never figured they get as popular as they are now, so I figured I’d spill the beans. Under a read more due to violence, abuse, sexual harassment, ect.)
Aiden
Aiden was born into a somewhat well off family. His father was a Event Director, directing events like Pokemon Leagues or Contests or large scale events. His mother was a popular talk-show host. He was born as the middle brother between his older brother Nicholas, and his younger brother Terry. Nicholas was the golden child. Could do no wrong, Mr. Perfect. Good grades, an excellent trainer, charismatic to those who met him. He was put on a pedestal, and Aiden was expected to live up to that.
Of course he never could, and his years were spent with him trying to be combed to be nothing but a clone of his older brother while also trying to provide the affection his parents didn't really give to him, to his own little brother. His parents were the kind to buy you what you want, but never really hug or encourage you. Conditional love as they call it. But Nicholas was Mr. Perfect, and what he wanted he got. He took Aiden's first Pokemon and then got rid of her, and with a cruel streak constantly made Aiden's life hell.
At seventeen Aiden finally lost it, since his brother had been taunting about his lack of achievements and how he was the fuck up of the family. He ended up wailing on his brother, and his father jumped into the fray and just having it turn into this huge, violent brawl between all of them. Afterwards, Aiden told them he had enough, that he was done with them and that being letting him be born was the worst injustice they had done to him. He ran away, but did come back one night to spend one evening with his little brother, the only one he had no resentment towards, and helped him catch his own Pokemon since his parents couldn't spare the time to.
Cue Aiden's life on the streets, where he took under handed jobs, as well as jumping between small scale street gangs. One turning point in his life was when he was hired as an under the table dish washer at a shady strip club. He saw naked woman every day, and watched them performed and learned their movements, watching how they seduced men and got exactly what they wanted. That, along with the fact that one customer sexually assaulted him helped shape his resolve for the time being. At first he had beaten the man to a bloody pulp and left. However he came back the next day and welcomed any and all advances. He found it disgustingly ironic and funny that so many customers were supposedly 'respectful members of society', like doctors, corp executives, officers. Rich people who had the money to help charities and help those in need, were spending money that could go so far for others, just to see his ass.
He began delving deeper into the gang network, using his body and connections he made to get people what they wanted, as well as what he wanted. He became the kind of guy you heard of on the streets, where he could get you anything if you matched his price. In Aiden's Canon story line, he met Guzma in a bar before Guzma had created Team Skull. Guzma was in need of money and a few other things, and Aiden taking a liking to his appearance and attitude, decided he would give the strange guy a freebie. He scored him some items and cash, and simply said Guz could owe him a favor later if they ever met again.
Years later and he was approached with an offer to join Team Skull by the Big Boss himself.
Benji
Benji was born to his Alolan native Mother Roselani and Hoenn father Caleb who moved about from region to region until he eventually settled in Alola. Caleb was a officer in training while Roselani was a waitress when they met at her place of work and hit it off pretty well. He was seemingly kind, if a little rough around the edges. They two began dating, and when he finally became an officer he asked her to marry him.
Things seemed to be going well for them, although Caleb began to abuse his authority over civilians. One thing led to another, and he essentially ended up fired after nearly beating a kid to death for 'being a punk and not listening to him'. The two ended up moving to the a mobile home near Tapu Village, where he found work as a woodcutter.
He changed drastically from when she had first met him, and was scared about telling him she was pregnant. She hid it as long as she could, but of course he found out. She was surprised however, to see that he was elated about the news, and for the duration of the pregnancy he returned to being the man she fell in love with.
However, just a few years after Benji was born, the cruelty and abuse started. He was picked on and insulted for not being 'tough' or 'not standing up for himself'. He was seen as a runt, due to him being shorter and more frail looking than most of the other kids around the mobile home park. His mother protected him best she could, always coming to his defense and transferring the arguments and abuse to herself, Caleb’s reasoning for hurting her being that she had given him a ‘weak’ son.
The only real solace Benji had was when his father was at work and his mother would play with him and hang around him, teaching him songs and how to cook and sew, and he was happy to help her around the house. He was also content at school when he did go, although he did not have many friends due to the fact that he kept to himself.
The abuse and arguments continued on, but one of the three biggest turning points in his life was when he was around ten. His mother had secretly been saving money for the past years to try and leave Caleb, planning on taking Benji with her. She was packing things one night, hoping Caleb would stay out late drinking like he usually did, and Benji was asleep. As fate would have it, he came home fairly early and found out. After a heavy argument and smacking and shoving, Caleb angrily shoved her out of the doorway, not counting on her head busting open against the stairs they had leading up to their trailers. Benji of course had been awoken by the commotion, and when things had gone quiet for his parents he went to investigate.
Thus, a small ten year old Benji stood at the doorway watching his father picking up his still mother, with him simply telling Benji to keep it a secret. Benji ended up blacking out due to the horror/trauma, and when he came to the next morning he found his father in his favorite arm chair and his mother gone. Caleb told him that his mother had ended up leaving and abandoning them both.
Following his mother 'abandoning him', Benji grew up with his father hitting, insulting, putting him down, and sometimes locking him out of the trailer. The rare times where he would be somewhat civil were always creepy and haunted Benji, since his father would stroke along his cheek or run his hands through his hair, always saying the same thing 'You look just like your mother you know'.
One particularly traumatic incident involved his father watching him lose a Pokemon battle to another kid in the trailer park when he was about fourteen. As punishment and a means to humiliate him, he made Benji put on one of his mother's old dresses. As if he wasn't humiliated enough, he was downright terrified and sicked when his father leaned close, examining him. The kicker was when he ran a hand along Benji thigh, repeating those same words. "You look...so much like her."
Thankfully, nothing happened then, and looking back on it Benji is glad for the next incident that occurred, since something much worse might have happened if he stayed any longer.
The last incident involved his father catching him kissing another boy at sixteen. The boy was a fellow mobile home dweller and one of the few friends he thought he had in the park. The boy ended up running off, leaving him to be dragged by his hair back to their home, where he was given the worse beating he had gotten in all sixteen years of his life. He had a busted lip, black eye, bruises everywhere, cuts and gashes where he had a beer bottle smashed into his side before finally he was dragged out of the house, with his father telling him to 'Get the fuck out and never come back you worthless, disgusting faggot.’
Benji ended up sneaking in afterwards to grab Nyx, the guitar his mother gave him as one of the few birthday presents she could afford, some clothes, and a photo of her.
He lived the following year pick pocketing, doing under the table jobs, and breaking into homes for food or some money.
The Canon verse I have for him was that Plumeria recognized him as one of the kids that lived in the same mobile park as her, but she never really got his name or got to know him. But seeing as how he was on the streets, she figured he probably had no where to go and offered him the opportunity to join Team Skull.

Hell In The City: Full story of the tanker accident that burnt several in Lagos
Pulse went to the scene of the Lagos tanker accident and spoke to eyewitnesses. This is what they told us.
Madam Olaide Animashaun recalls the moment everyone was screaming at the middle aged man driving a truck laden with petrol, because he was losing control of his vehicle. Time check, 5:15pm.
Animashaun runs a kiosk in an uncompleted building beside the Otedola bridge. She watched as a tanker that had lost its brakes, ended the lives of several on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, on a chaotic evening in the nation's commercial capital.
“People were shouting at him to put a wedge under his tyres. He tried to put a wedge but it wasn't working. There were cars behind him, honking desperately. The traffic was mad. But his truck kept rolling backwards because it had developed brake failure. This tanker was on a slope. The truck was now beginning to spill its inflammable contents on the road. The cars behind the petrol truck were trying to scamper out of the way, but there was no way for them to go because all lanes were blocked.
“Next thing, we heard a bang and then the fire started. I ran. Everybody ran….It was brake failure”, Animashaun said in an emotion laden voice.
According to Animashaun, the tanker which was painted red, had no company name on it.
Fire on the bridge
At about 5:30pm on Thursday, June 28, 2018, images of a long line of cars getting burnt in broad daylight on the busiest expressway in Nigeria, found their way to social media. The dark balls of fire would morph into thick black clouds amid cries for help.
Eyewitnesses say many had to be resuscitated after they inhaled black soot.
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said 9 bodies were recovered from the scene of the accident and 54 cars were burnt beyond recognition. However, Adedoyin Adejubu, a young man who lives in the neighbourhood and who saw it all unfold, disputes the official death toll.
“Let me tell you, close to 100 people died. The government is lying. This is not some obscure village in Borno or a hidden neigbourhood in rural Nigeria. This happened in Lagos. We saw it all. There is nothing like only 9 people died. Ambulances were packing dead bodies into body bags all night long. How can you pack just 9 bodies with several ambulance trips all night? They worked all night to clear the corpses. My brother, they are lying to you”, Adejubu said, agitated.
Animashaun and Adejubu relayed the story of a bus full of school kids. They said the bus was a Caleb school bus. They wondered, through tear soaked eyes, if all the kids survived.
“There was a bus full of Caleb students. I don’t want to say what I saw. I pray half those students made it…..a lot of them were badly burnt…..”
Pulse wasn't able to reach the Caleb school authorities before this story was filed.
At the scene of the accident the morning after, the Lagos State emergency management agencies and traffic management authorities, went about the task of clearing the trucks, burnt buses and cars. The air was still filled with carbon monoxide and black soot when Pulse arrived the scene. There were still traces of blood here and there, burnt bags and papers. Scavengers were also on the scene, rummaging for valuables.
In an uncompleted building, 'Area Boys' had stockpiled valuables garnered from the scene of the accident. They were waiting for the right buyers.
"One man in a suit got out from his luxury jeep with a bag as the fire raged. He was running. But the fire still got to him. He didn't make it", Adejubu said.
Pulse watched as the man's said bag was removed from the gutter.
Eyewitnesses blame government
“The government has to do more to keep us alive in this country. About 10 years ago, there was a similar accident here. Does this mean that in 10 years, we have learnt nothing? That nothing can be done? Are we going to be marking a 10-year anniversary every now and again?
"This is the only road I use to my house; this is the only road some of us know. I live in Ojodu. This is the only road I know. In saner countries, tankers don’t ply busy roads during the day. Why do we have to die because government cannot regulate the reckless activities of tanker drivers? Which kind of country is this? Every day when I use this road, I have my heart in my mouth because of petrol tankers,” said Mrs. Tope Nwosu in a fit of rage.
Alfa Wasiu, another eyewitness, also pleaded with the government to make the roads safer. “Please you people should help us tell government to regulate the activities of tanker drivers. We are begging you. Please……”
Bolting out of a burning car
Madam Titilayo who also runs a beverage kiosk underneath the Otedola bridge told Pulse that the death toll couldn't have been 9. “Ah….Ahhhhh…na lie o…na lie o…e pass 9 o…”, she screamed in Yoruba.
Most of the eyewitnesses who spoke to Pulse, said there was no way 9 persons could have died from an accident in which 54 cars were burnt.
“Ko possible rara”, said Adejubu….”ko possible...ahhhh”.
Another eyewitness who identified himself as Martins, said when the fire started, most persons couldn’t bolt out of their cars because the locks got jammed; no thanks to thermal expansion.
“Heat causes expansion. Things like locks expand inside their holsters and become impossible to pry open”, blogger and writer, Chioma Agwuegbo, explained.
Mrs. Animashaun gave the Lagos emergency response team top marks, though. “They arrived on time. In less than seven minutes, the ambulances and fire service people were here. They really tried. It could have been worse”, she said.
The government responds
LASEMA spokesperson Adeshina Tiamiyu maintained that only 9 persons died from the incident. “Nine people are dead and four injured are in hospital”, Tiamiyu declared.
Air Commodore Akugbe Iyamu who is Director, Search and Rescue of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), told Pulse at the scene of the accident that only 9 persons died. Iyamu didn’t disclose which mortuary or hospital the dead or injured were taken to.
A spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Commission, Bisi Kazeem, said in a statement that the tanker, five buses, two trucks, a tricycle and 45 cars were burnt out.
“As a government, we would not relent in putting measures in place to ensure safety of lives and property of all residents,” promised Lagos state government spokesperson, Kehinde Bamigbetan.
“We extend our deepest commiseration to the families of persons who lost their lives as well as properties to the incident.”
As Pulse was recording at the scene of the tanker accident, another accident occurred on the opposite lane. A danfo driver speeding in one way traffic, had a head-on collision with a commercial bus that was ferrying commuters from Ondo in the opposite direction. Some 10 persons emerged from the accident badly hurt and unconscious. They were immediately rushed to hospital.
On Friday, June 29, 2018, another fuel tanker burst into flames when it collided with a trailer at Mallam Karo, along Minna-Suleja road in Niger State.

A Decision at the Crossroads
A Heartland AU - Chapter 2
Mitch sat back down and dropped his hat on the small pile of logs next to his chair then reached to refill his coffee cup. He’d already checked, mucked out and fed the horses in his care, saw that the barn and the area around the trailer was none the worse for wear. Checking the time he dialed Amy’s phone and waited.
She answered and he heard the screen door of the house open and close almost simultaneously and he immediately heard those motorcycle boots walk the stairs.
“Good morning husband.”
“Morning Ames, how are things ?”
“Things are great but JT needs some potty time and Lyndy’s in the bath so ….”
“I’ll call when I know something. Anyone helping ?”
“Georgie and Quinn are coming over to deal with horses, Caleb will check the herd.”
“Love you, talk later.”
“More than talk sweetheart, I hugged a pillow last night, not very satisfying.”
Mitch laughed and hit disconnect.
“Mitch, good morning, I was expecting to knock and wake you.”
“Morning Ty, rancher’s hours I guess, my wife’s an early riser too which is helpful getting a bunch done before the kids get up raring to go.”
“I was going to run out to pick up some breakfast but you seem to have beat me to it.”
“If you’re not fancy, there’s a bag of home made muffins and some oranges right inside, coffee’s fresh.”
“Your wife baked these ?”
“I think those are her grandmother’s honestly but she does with the kids.”
“How about you Ty, you hail from around here ?”
“Vancouver originally, my mom’s still out there, dad died a few years ago, mom’s remarried, we talk every week and she was here I guess 4 or 5 months ago.”
Ty came out of the trailer a few minutes later with a small plate, two muffins, an orange and mug he found on the counter and sat a second before his phone rang.
“It’s the clinic, I have to take this.”
“No problem at all Ty.”
He was on the phone for about 20 minutes and glanced a couple of times at Mitch in apology. At one point Mitch checked on the horses again, removed their empty feed buckets, checked their stalls, water and the horses general condition and returned outside as Ty was getting off the phone.
“OK, let’s get that front end off the ground and see what’s up.” Ty said walking over “Everything Ok at home ?”
“Everything’s fine, it’s the busy time getting the kids ready so we didn’t talk long.”
Ty nodded as they walked. There was no lift per se but a nice platform ramp setup. The plan was to jack the truck up and slide the two platform ramps underneath the front end and the jack the truck on the platform so they could check it out and see what needed to be fixed.
Matt, the officer from the day before came by in his regular clothes, jeans, t shirt and flannel. He walked over with work gloves, there to lend a hand and took over once the jacking for each of them as they manually lifted the Dodge heavie’s 8 cylinder Cummins Diesel off the ground. He helped slide the platforms over and then jack the truck again to raise the front passenger side off of the platform.
The first thing they did was remove the tire which had gone flat overnight due to a crack up the rear of the rim they hadn’t seen the day before. This wasn’t an issue as Mitch travelled with two spares, one in the trailer and one under the pick up in the rear.
As Mitch had predicted the rocker arm was a goner as was the front right shock. The shock would be easy enough to pick up locally as a pair since they should both be done together, the real issue was the rocker arm.
When they were satisfied at what needed to be done they sat down in what looked like a small makeshift patio outside Ty’s shop.
“OK, the shocks’ll be easy, Canadian Tire should have them in stock.” Ty began. “You have a viable spare so that’s not an issue. Let me call around and go online and see if I can’t round up a right side rocker arm.”
“I’ll set up another pot of coffee.”
Ty nodded and checked his phone walking away. Matt accompanied Mitch over to the trailer. It was a little chilly so Mitch stopped and stoked the fire pit, threw on a few logs and grabbed the empty pot while Matt pulled up a chair and a small branch to push some embers around. He expected Mitch to have a coffee machine inside and was surprised when he put a grate over the pit and lay the old style percolator on the fire.
“Old school.” Matt said watching.
“I’m not much for the machine stuff though my wife loves the convenience of those one cup things, can’t fault that but when I have the time, real perk is the way to go I think.”
“Yeah, my dad was like that, me, I get most of mine for free really, perk of the uniform I guess.”
“So when’s the wedding ?” Mitch asked as he leaned forward to move the pot off of the flame when it started to perk.”
“Next June so we can get married outside at her folks place.”
“And after ?”
“We both want kids so maybe that, we’ll have the house by then and both get good benefits, time off for kids, we’ll see. How long you wait ?”
“I don’t know that we really waited or planned anything, she was pregnant about a year after we married I guess. JT, about 2 ½ years later I guess and now 3 years later once again. We’re also waiting on approval for a foster, we both feel strongly about it, she wasn’t pregnant at the time we applied but we’re fine with it.”
“Boy or girl ?”
“Which one, it’s a girl in the oven and the foster will be what it is.”
“Nice, maybe you’ll even up.”
“Not necessary, love ‘em all the same, treat ‘em all the same.”
“Definitely the way it should be.” Matt said as the door to the porch of the house opened and closed.
“Just in time for a fresh cup Ty.” Mitch said gingerly pouring the hot coffee from the steaming pot into a mug. “Good news I hope.” Mitch continued.
“I found one we can get today the rest Monday after delivery which means you may not be driving home until Tuesday.”
“The one we can get today ?”
“Airdrie.”
“Airdrie, that’s what, 2 ½ hours each way.” Matt said.
“And I’ve got to get to the clinic for something. This is the number of the dealership, the guy who has it is Tom and the name he has is Cutty, whatever you decide is fine Mitch, that’s my truck, key’s in the ignition.”
“I may have an idea.” Mitch said “we’ll figure it out and let you know Ty.”
“I’m a bachelor for the weekend Mitch” Matt told him. “I can grab a cruiser and we can be down and back in under 4 hours.”
Mitch laughed, “let me make a call.”
Matt strolled off into the barn as Mitch thought for a minute and hit his phone.
“Hey buddy, Amy tells you’ve got a problem.”
“One maybe you can help me with Caleb, there’s a rocker arm with my name on it in Airdrie, how about you ride past, pick it up and bring it up ?”
“Where are you ?”
“Place called Nelson Lake, it’s about 2 maybe 2 ½ hours ?”
“I’d love to help you out Mitch but, well, we’ve got this fence thing at Heartland I’m dealing with.”
“How many ?”
“Just 6 and they’re all back but I got to get this fence back up, I’ve got Trace and Jade with me. Give Amy a call, maybe she can think of something.”
“Ok Caleb, get ‘er done.”
“You know I will brother, later.”
Mitch took off his hat and dropped on the ever decreasing log pile, ran his hand through his hair as he sat down and hit the call button.
“Give me some good news cowboy, your baby momma’s missing you big time.”
“Ames.”
“No Mitch.”
“Not that bad, there’s a rocker arm in Airdrie, if someone can pick it up and drive it here I can be home tomorrow. I’ll get the shocks done today so tomorrow will go real fast. I asked Caleb but ….”
“I know about the fence. Let me ask Georgie and Quinn, they’re with the kids and kind of aimless for the weekend it seems. I’ll text you, it’s easier from out there, text me an address or GPS.”
“On the way. Hey Amy, you know I miss you as much as….”
“I know you do sweetheart, I love you.”
“Love you too.”
“Where are we ?”
“Waiting to hear someone from home is driving up through Airdrie and bringing us that rocker arm while we get those shocks done.”
“You think we can get it all done today ?” Matt asked.
“We can try I guess, I wouldn’t drive the trailer down at night but first thing in the morning would make my wife happy. It’ll all depends on when it gets here.”
“Well, I called Canadian Tire and they have your shocks in stock so let’s pick up those, install ‘em and get them out of the way.”
“And then lunch is on me.” Mitch said patting Matt on the shoulder “I know you don’t have to do this but I sure appreciate the company.”
Mitch’s phone sounded off on the way back with the parts and he checked his messages. The tone was specifically Amy’s.
“Georgie and Quinn glad to help out, help on the way !! Love you heading out, talk later !!”
Mitch read the text out loud once he read it.
“Excellent” Matt said “how long you think ?”
“With the stop in Airdrie, maybe a lunch, figure 3 to 4 hours, we may get this done today yet.”
Mitch then texted Ty rather than called and received a call back as they pulled into Ty’s property.
“Hey Ty, just getting back from Canadian Tire.”
“You two Ok on your own, we’re swamped here at the clinic and I don’t want to leave Kelsey.”
“We’re great, take whatever time you need Ty and if you can later, dinner’s on me.”
“Feel free to put whomever is bringing that part in the guest room Mitch.”
“Thanks Ty, we’ll see, the trailer has plenty of room.”
“Consider the option Mitch, talk to you later.”
“He’s a nice guy, bit of a loner.” Matt said.
“I’ve noticed, what’s his story ?”
“Ty ? Not really sure, he got here maybe a dozen years or so ago and was working for Kelsey. Rumor has it he was escaping a bad break up or something, broken heart kind of thing. He’s dated some, he’s a good looking guy, just nothing stuck I guess.”
“How’s he related to Kelsey ?”
“How so, I don’t think they are.”
“Isn’t his last name Burton ?” Mitch asked now thoroughly confused.
Matt laughed “No, no but I can definitely see how you made that mistake, Ty’s last name is Borden, B-o-r-d-en not Burton, B-u-r-t-o-n like Kelsey.”
“Ty Borden” Mitch said quietly running the name through his memory “It sounded familiar when I thought it was Burton, this doesn’t help, I can’t make the connection. He said he was down our way years ago, but the time frame is all wrong because I was in the service back then, who knows, let’s get the truck done.”
Working leisurely on the truck they got the shocks changed, the wrecked tire stowed and the spare ready to install once the rocker was swapped out. There was a small bar that served lunch and snacks a few miles away that Matt recommended and on the way Mitch decided to touch base.
He was surprised that he couldn’t get either Georgie or Quinn on the phone and left messages to call him when they could. Then he tried Amy who picked up on the second ring.
“Hey Ames, how’s it going and did you hear from Georgie or Quinn ?”
“It’s going fine and I haven’t, hold on a second Mitch” she said as he heard the phone moved and her talking to someone else which sounded as if she was handing him something and thanking him.
“What was that all about ?”
“Tipping a nice young man who just loaded something in the pickup for me, where are you ?”
“Heading for a burger with Matt, the deputy who’s helping me out. Where are you anyway and what’s being loaded, I thought you were out with the kids.”
“What gave you that idea, Georgie and Quinn are with the kids, I just had a rocker arm loaded in and strapped down.”
“Really ? You’re driving it up, why ?”
“Date night in the trailer lover.”
“You’re not serious.”
“What’s that supposed to mean.” She asked playfully indignant.
“Let’s not go there, you know I can’t wait to see you.”
“And touch me and hold me ?”
“All those things Ames, stop and eat please and don’t overdue.”
“I’m fine sweetheart and I have a sandwich and drinks and a bag of clementines, I’ll stop to eat on the road.”
“And I promised dinner to our hosts.”
“I can’t wait to meet and thank them. I love you, gotta ride !!”
“Stay safe Ames.”
“Change in plans Mitch ?” Matt asked laughing as they parked at the small bar and grill.
“Yup.”
“Nice she misses you.”
“She’s usually better than this when I’m away, this is pregnancy hormones.”
“So that rumor’s true ?”
“Which rumor is that Matt ?”
“You know, the uhm, uhm, closeness.” He said with a grin.
“I only have the experience with Amy but in her case yes and in spades.”
“Good for you buddy, sounds like fun.”
Mitch laughed, “yeah, it doesn’t suck and I’m long gone head over heels in love with her so…..”
