-red is like the sole prince of a small nation, Pallet, his mom is the queen, despite the nation being small , they are increadibly strong thanks to pokemon trainer prince who beats everyone

-rocket nation with king gio had been attacking and waging a full out war but Red's pushed them back, now rocket nation is trying to form alliances, so Red's mom has to the do same thing

-a neighboring nation, Oakland (ha) had always fought with Red's nation over resources or something, but rocket is attacking them so they form an alliance

-and to form an alliance King Samuel sends his grandson Green to be married off

-cause daisy's the oldest so she'll be queen, and honestly the king thinks green is shit at everything so getting rid of him is a weight off his shoulders

-and green is pissed cause he's a strong trainer and had been doing a lot to protect his nation but his grandfather doesn't care

-red and green immediately hate each other but like they're married so they have to be around each other

-and green like snuck his pokemon with him and keeps sneaking away to train and eventually red catches him training and is like hey wait you like pokemon battling

-all the while rocket is forming alliances and planning a sinister take over of pallet then Oakland

-red and green bond over training

-and like all of the nobels and military leaders treat green like he's just arm candy but now Red's like hey wait you actually know stuff and are almost as strong as me

-green starts coming to planning sessions and the elite 4 generals dont take him serious or whatever then red is like okay go battle him

-green kicks their asses and earns their respect

-they do planning and training and all the while red and green are falling for each other but neither will admit it, cause they think the other just sees this as duty or whatever

-finally the battle comes rocket vs. everyone else

-it's going well until green gets hurt, like maybe he and red are joking around on the battlefield some cause it's easy and they're kinda having fun and flirting a bit, but then someone sneaks and stabs green or whatever

-one of the elite 4 take green away to medics and red goes feral (think achilles) he beats giovanni for good

-all of the allies meet up to divvy up rocket's territories, and green is like hanging on by a thread or whatever and his grandfather is like who cares he only exists to further Oakland's control

-red is pissed threatening to wage ware against oakland

-daisy ends up finding out green is hurt and immediately comes to pallet to see him (cause she actually loves her brother) and that calms red down

-red's mom ends up somehow getting oak to step down as king and daisy becomes queen

-green gets better and red's like hey i know you don't love me and were just forced into this by your grandfather so here is this country called Viridian it's yours youre the king now

-and before green can be like wait im in love with you too, red fucks off to mt. silver (cause of course right)

-green is devastated, red is devastated

-the story is over... or is it???

-it isn't obviously, cause bunny has to have her happy ending cause real life sucks ass so fantasy has to be great in the end

-prince gold from johto makes friends with green, hears the story, and how technically green and red are 100% still married

-so he and his merry band of mischief makers (silver, lyra, kris) go on a journey to bring red down

-they make up some story about green being in trouble

-red obviously rushes down the mountain to save green, but like green's just hanging out in his castle bored as hell playing spoons with alakazam or something

I know the RGB and FRLG arcs are where people look for originalshipping, but in my honest opinion I think the post gym test scene in GSC is incredibly underrated. I don’t know how to explain it but something about Green proving Red was hiding his injury by taking his arm, and then the fact that Green had been looking for Red’s cure in secret... I like to think he also gave Red Charizard to keep his limbs warm on the way up since Aero does hold Red weirdly but obviously Green wouldn’t admit that he was being considerate! 

Idk maybe it’s because I’m aromantic so I find the less overt displays of love more romantic but also I just see Green as the person who will do anything except say out loud that he loves you so it fits my headcanon

design notes and lil musings under the cut!

Ash takes a lot from Pokespe in terms of his proportions (at least how the early chapters look in my head) and some cues from the newer movie designs bc i LOVE those, especially the one from Power of Us. So ya I also wanted to give him a big poofy jacket bc of i remember seeing an interpretation of Red's original sprite as a big jacket as well and i think it suits Ash a lot. The style was kinda early One Piece inspired at first, so there's just a big of Luffy in Ash's design, but I think it ended up more Digimon Adventure in the end lmaoo. The nose bandaid's to just elevate that rookie protagonist feel a lil bit + I spent way too long figuring out a new hat symbol lmaoo. He's also 11 in this world to match Red's age in RBY.

Pikachu I just wanted to draw him like Red's Pikachu in Special and give him the lighter coloured tummy from early artwork.

Misty's the biggest departure obvs but I knew I wanted to give her a crop hoodie and take inspo from Kiana Khansmith's Misty and give her the wetsuit as an undersuit. Then the chunky shoes were carried over from Ash with big scrumpled socks bc I thought it made her look a lil more unkempt. The whole goal was the make her more scrappy looking and focus in on the whole "Tomyboyish Mermaid" thing from the games. Also combined her RBY hair with her GSC do by making it a half-up ponytail that I think is very cute. OH and her shoes are Cerulean Gym branded, bc I imagine in this world there's merch for each Gym that the leader wear, so the wet suit and hoodie would be branded too. The hoodie's just cropped above the logo and the wet suit's logo's covered by clothes. She's about 12, so a lil older than Ash and does not let him forget it.

For Psyduck, I wanted to make him a lil fluffier and ugly-duckling + incorporate the three lil sprout hairs he's got a lil more to suit the style. He also has a neck now, you just can't see it super well here. He's just a fluffy lil duck who hurt a lot. Poor lil guy :((

Brock was pretty straight forward, I kinda wanted to reference his Sygna Suit from Masters with pants and a tank top, but made the pants into cargo pants that can be unzipped into shorts (he's thinks its the coolest thing in the world. He wears hiking boots to go over rougher terrain as a Rock-type Leader and hunt for fossils bc I like that aspect of his game characterization so I carried it over here, and he wears an armband with Pewter Gym branding. His tiny lil facial hairs are all he can grow at the moment bc he's still like 15 as usual, but he thinks it makes him look ~Older, Maturer & More Sophisticated~ so refuses to shave it.

I wanted to incorporate a lil more Geode Dude into Geodude so I changed his colours a bit and added parts where the outer layers of the rock have kinda chipped away in battles to reveal the crystal underneath + added the eyebrows from Alolan Geodude. I imagine it's like, the more outer layer gets chipped away from a Geodude, the closer they get to evolution. I do not at all know what this world's Graveller or Golem would look like but I think I'd canonise the theory of Machoke and Graveller taking aspects of the other when traded and make them kinda like Karrablast and Shelmet in a way.

Broad plot strokes are just these guys would exist in a version of the indigo league w an expanded kanto dex to include all related mons + variants, so stuff like Electivire and Annihilape and Alolan Exeggcutor would exist in there without much fanfare of ~Woahhhh Newly Discovered Pokemon~. Regional variants would be found on the Sevii Islands. Maybe there'd be small type changes too idk. Like pure Rock Geodude that gain Ground on evolution bc Gravel-ler. idk who knows I'm just spitballin. Essentially just a lil more closely following the Game's story, I guess. Less wacky loose adaptation stuff from Indigo League. Not bc I don't like that stuff, just bc it's not what I'd do.

I figure like, there'd be an interlude short arc that takes place in the Sevii Islands just after the Vermillion Gym where Ash would catch a Galarian Farfetch'd and all forms of Paldean Tauros instead of like, 100 Kantonian Tauros, and be introduced to Legendary Pokemon through a quest to track down the Galarian Legendary birds (then find out others can be found back in Kanto). Naturally he'd use the PC system (maybe adapted as some kind of daycare or something, or maybe just a teleporter to Oak's lab like the main anime) and have a couple more than 6 team members to rotate out as needed. Also. Mega Evolution would be a factor bc I think it'd be cool, so Ash gets to Mega Evolve Charizard into Mega Charizard Y.

OH also just for funsies, I'd split the starters across the trio, so Ash gets Charmander, Misty gets Squirtle and Brock gets Bulbasaur.

Basically Ash would end up with more or less the same team from the original series, but with added Annihilape, Sirfetch'd, Paldean Tauros and Mega Charizard Y. I also think I'd add Dragonite from Journeys and make his Gengar the Haunter he befriended that would follow him in secret after helping him beat Sabrina and evolve in the Cinnabar Mansion + officially join his team there.

Squirtle would evolve into Wartortle with Misty and Bulbasaur would stay in the same stage with Brock like Ash's.

I'll come up with and probably draw everyone's main teams at some point later but. ya. that's my piece!

Crystal Reads PokeSpe - GSC Arc

Alright wife, you win. The manga does in fact get pretty good.

Johto is my region. I'm a huge fan of all of it, so going into the manga, there was a bit of...let's call it apprehension over what it would be like. My wife of course talks to me a bit about the series as she reads it, so I knew a little, and hearing how Gold was, I wasn't really looking forward to it on the whole.

The good news is, I actually kinda liked Gold? Still not that much, but he was better than anticipated. There's only one real moment where I got seriously annoyed with him. Otherwise, he's generally fine.

What makes him fun is the dynamic with Silver. In the early volumes, Silver is blatantly just stronger than Gold is, and is constantly ahead. Moreover, for how much of a little shit Gold is, he is genuinely kind to others, and Silver mimics that by being harsh in his words but compassionate in his actions. It makes them believably antagonistic but constantly willing to set difference aside to cooperate, and it's a lot of fun.

Crystal is, of course, my girl. I kinda love that she gets involved because Oak is just losing his damned mind over none of the dex holders doing their proper jobs of catching things, and Kris is the only one talented in this regard. She's really fun to see in action, being quite confident and clever. Her team is great, with movesets and decisions that actually work beautifully for someone whose focus is capture, including False Swipe Cubone, Spore Parasect, Mean Look Smoochum which I personally loved as a nod to how many wild Pokemon just book it in Crystal. Her sets are super well attuned to what's going on. She also gets a fun dynamic with Eusine, who is a delightful lunatic.

My biggest complaint with the new trio is that they kind of lack for a cohesive trio dynamic. When Crystal joins the group, Silver shows himself out, only showing up for the final battle. And Gold and Crystal...I don't really care for their dynamic, because they barely have one. They don't have a lot of interaction, and most of what's presented as outline is "Gold is the hotheaded boy, Crystal the level-headed girl who needs to keep him in check." They step out of that when things start moving, but it's not a great initiation, and it's the framework their dynamic is seen through. Which is not my favorite.

The gym leaders of Johto are all pretty fun, though some don't get much time in the spotlight. Chuck is really interesting as Blue's old teacher, Bugsy is fun as an active ruins enthusiast, and Falkner being the new gym leader after his father stepped down and an officer on the side is interesting. I do think that Jasmine kinda gets sidelined, outside of her one really interesting moment of revealing Steelix, as does Clair unfortunately. What's more interesting is that Ethan isn't on the gym challenge. I kind of expected that the gyms would be the central focus goal of every main protagonist, similar to the games and anime. But nope! Gold has no interest, Crystal has no interest, and Silver just stole his badges. It lets the leaders do more than just appear for battles, which is nice.

The return of Kanto's gym leaders in the later books is nice, too. Surge gets a surprisingly large amount of screen time for some reason, I guess gearing up for the redemption culminated in Raikou, but it was still unexpected. The return of the protagonist trio is...a mixed bag for me. I like the bit of Red turning out to be injured from Lorelei's ice, and that he turns down the Viridian Gym position that Blue takes up, and I love Green's dynamic with Silver. I do feel like, as things really escalate, the Kantrio takes over more than they should. It's a lot of time on them, and not as much on Johtrio. I feel like this is part of why Crystal and Gold don't get to have much of a dynamic at all.

Now, story stuff. This is where Johto is just way stronger.

The introduction was already pretty good. I like that Gold is very familiar with Pokemon because his house is just full of them, and I like how Silver's thefts are framed and set up. But the end of the first book also introduces the pivot of the Masked Man, who becomes the recurring central antagonist. Things that happen feel well paced, and there's a good amount of serious events as far as Ecruteak's destruction and what happens at the Lake of Rage, into the fury of Lugia.

What I think is particularly interesting is that this set gives a lot of answers and depth to things set up in Kanto. We learn that Green was taken by the Masked Man just like Silver, and that Ho-oh was specifically the bird that took her away, during the time the Masked Man had control over it. Which, side note, I love that the order was "steal children with battle potential," and the only Pallet Town kid stolen was Green. Correct. It gives an explanation for collecting badges as "bypassing the league" rather than a strict entry condition, allowing the gym leaders to be way more threatening. It introduces that sure you can have like 30 Pokemon on you if you wanted, but it's generally agreed that 6:1 is the best ratio to properly care for them so everyone treats trainers with more than six like they suck ass. It brings up Red's presence at Mt Silver in a way that makes sense beyond just "he's training," and I kind of appreciate it. Most significantly, it keeps with the idea that some of the gym leaders were with Team Rocket, but that there wasn't conclusive proof so they're accepted back in, but some that didn't return have vacancies and that's why they're being filled, including with Falkner's gym. Bill is spearheading an effort to make sure that people of decent moral character get hired into the role, not just battle masters, and it's an interesting tie-in given the events of the last set.

Crystal's arc is solid with its introduction, and I like that she kicks Pokeballs because she broke her arms on day 1 of training and never learned how to throw them. It's also a perfect tie-in with the beasts awakening, leading to Crystal's travels and involvement with the larger plot. It ties itself together nicely, and leaves a really long cliffhanger over what happened to Gold and Silver as they were getting rocked by the Masked Man.

The inclusion of the legends as major factors in this arc is nice. The birds were only somewhat important in Kanto, and while Mewtwo was there, it was in an awkward spot of only tangential relevance. Ho-oh and Lugia are centrally important in their connection to Celebi, who is the entire crux of the Masked Man's ambitions to go back in time to undo a great personal tragedy. And yes here's where the spoilers really come in.

The Masked Man's reveal is interesting. I had him pegged at the end of book 2 just given battle style, recognizing that they're setting up "oh there's a lot of ice going on here" as being undeniably Pryce. They finally reveal him as Whitney and the radio crew go down there, train against a Suicune he made out of ice in anticipation of "What is Suicune challenges me like it did all the other gym leaders?" Then they start the hints. Pryce internally hinting that Suicune would never come to him for some mystery reason. Everyone commenting about his age and mobility in the wheelchair so how could it possibly be him? It seemed very obvious. But then the Masked Man is fighting Ho-oh above Tin Tower, while Pryce is in the stands for the tournament, and it's like...huh. Okay maybe I'm wrong? Only for them to pull out that his cane is a camera device that he taps to relay signals to control the ice doll version fighting a legend, while he's doing his own thing. It's pretty neat, actually. I like how they set him up.

His motivation is interesting too. He wants to capture time, in order to go back to save two Lapras that died when he was young. Their egg hatched just then, into his current Lapras and his baby boy I guess, but he never got over the guilt of their death. Despite attempts from his friends to get him to recover, he couldn't accept their efforts in a tribute song, and went down the path we see played out, where he kidnapped children, levels a city, revives a criminal organization, etc. in order to go back to that point in time and...I guess save them? His focus is kind of that anyone and everything around him are just tools to that goal, to cover his past trauma by erasing it completely. It's...interesting. I like it a lot more than Giovanni and Lance's motivations. It's compelling.

I think my biggest hangup is the final battle sequence happening in...kind of the way it does. The events culminate in a staged tournament to draw out the Masked Man, whose identity is only recognized as "one of the gym leaders," where all the gym leaders are brought together and battle for funsies. The tournament is cool! Jasmine being a former Rock-type and showing off Steelix is cool. Whitney should've beaten Misty. Morty and Surge tying is alright, can't complain. Janine and Falkner is a bit of an anticlimax, but I like to believe Falkner was winning. I was kinda rooting for Bugsy but I can't be mad about Sabrina winning. Blue beating his old mentor is really cool, big fan of that. And Price vs Erika was really fun too. Clair vs Blaine happens a bit later and it's fine, but Clair should've won that one.

When it pivots into the action, Gold and Crystal have a decent fight, but the Masked Man escapes, and now we're on to Green trying to get to him, and reuniting with Silver, but the action part is squarely on Green. Then Red and Blue arrive and they're hot on the guy's heels, and the action mostly follows them. Yellow is around too. The legendary beasts being active puts a lot of focus on Misty, Blaine, and Surge. Do you see my issue?

Gold, Silver, and Crystal are not central to the finale. They're fairly sidelined, if anything. They show up late, don't contribute quite as much, and even then Gold kinda goes it alone to directly stop Pryce. So Silver and Crystal are...kind of completely immaterial to this conclusion? They get a bit of a fight, with Crystal having her matchup against the legends (with Ethan) and Silver having his fight with Will, but that's kind of it. Their contributions are otherwise rather minimal. So it feels like the Johto group doesn't get quite as much significance as I would've liked. I can't say this is all that distinct from Red (and then Yellow) being the central protagonist lens for the RBY arc, but it'd be nice to have a bit more balance among the three.

I'll also admit, I'm...not as big of a fan of the Red/Yellow/Misty thing going on? It's thankfully kept very background, not much time is spent on it at all. But I dunno, I think instead of just having two girls be interested in him and treating that as a battle raging despite them seeing to not even really know one another, it'd be nice to have Red just like...reciprocate one way or another. Manga Red is a better incarnation, so it's not even like I hate him like I would games Red, I just (1) find it a little boring that Protagonist Man has two girls interested in him as the only implied romance in the series thus far, (2) the two girls having interest is treated as "there's still a battle going on" despite neither of them seeming to really acknowledge the other, and (3) Yellow feels like the cut and dry answer to me, and I will never get that into a love triangle I feel I would personally solve easily. That last one is petty, but I'm just saying, Red got pretty flustered when he realized Yellow is a girl. I'm just putting that out there.

On the whole, liked GSC a lot better than RBY. I feel like it's more cohesive and does some more interesting stuff with its concepts. RSE is next, and this is my wife's current favorite that got her to play ORAS, and now Hoenn is her second favorite region, so like. High expectations. Kinda looking forward to it.

Hi there @soulsilvers I'm doing well thank you for asking! Yeah, I actually didn't know that they full translated Pokemon Zensho until I got this ask, so thank you for alerting me to this I appreciate it! So of course I had to read it all last night! Link here for anyone who wants to read it! It was so cute honestly. First Pokemon Concierge, now Pokemon Zensho making me cry and I'm here for it honestly. Like you said on discord, it definitely is very rushed at only 9 chapters. I definitely would've loved to see it have a few more chapters to explore more about Red and Blue's friendship (well here called Ash and Gary) and going through the league (I always feel like the elite four part of the Kanto story always seems to get the short end of the stick). Despite it's rushed nature, it does make up for it in being the most true-to-gameverse adaptation. But what I appreciated the most was the details that were added were very grounded. Like the problems the gym leaders were facing felt real. It was cool to see how Giovanni became the way he was because it has been hinted at that he's not always been the ruthless Team Rocket boss but something made him that way. I've grown to like Lt. Surge a lot over the years and I feel like his arc was really wholesome too. Many people criticize Kanto for it not being particularly story driven (which to each their own, some people like story drive gameplay some don't, groups are valid), but to say it's completely devoid of story is false. The theme of Gen 1 besides exploration is relationships. It's why the key driver is the rivalry (and strained friendship) between Red and Blue. The orphan Cubone, Agatha and Oak, even Mewtwo's existence plays on the concept of relations in a subtle way. Zensho takes this concept and runs with it throughout as Red travels through Kanto. Much like Pokespe, Pokemon Zensho does a good job at bringing smaller but notable NPCs into the fold and it was done in a way that was not overbearing (looking at Marvin from SwSh Pokespe taking Hop's spot). It was cool to see the SS Anne captain and Game Warden get some more screentime. Also props for this manga low key making non-binary Bill canon! I know some people who read it may not like this version of Red not being "badass" in that he does earn some of his badges without actually defeating the leaders but I think the way it's handled here was okay. I think part of Red's character is supposed to be how he puts caring for others first despite being so talented at battling and I think it's okay that there are adaptations that don't just fall into him being a legendary battler who sweeps everyone. Even though this is a retelling of Red's story I would say if I'm honest this was really Blue's story. Blue got a lot of focus in this manga and outside of Pokemon Generations we don't really get to see into Blue's mindset. I appreciated as you mentioned on discord, how despite everything it did still focus on the fact that Blue was still Red's friend despite everything. It's not something that's focused on a lot in gen 1 adaptations. And of course the rest of the Oak family gets some shine too. This is probably my favorite portrayal of Oak in that it retains some of his flaws but humanizes him too (although I wish they had devoted some time to his and Agatha's rivalry). And Daisy...even with her limited screen time very much still shone especially with her calling out Professor Oak for his harsh words towards Blue. And then of course the revelation of what happened to Blue and Daisy's parents. Give those kids (and this Professor Oak) a hug. This is definitely my favorite of the four Pokemon manga I've read thus far and if we ever got a short miniseries for the Gen 1 games again I would hope it would take more of the Zensho approach and be game accurate while still expanding on little lore details.

Starting with Lorelei who he got Dragonite plushes from and he keeps those plushies on a shelf in his living room (they have gotten scratched up with time but he’s can sew so fixes them but one has a star patterned orange patch given Silver’s Sneasel scratched at it so it needed major repairs and was missing a decent spot on its back) (Lance actually taught Silver how to sew while fixing it up)

Next is Will who Lance usually let’s complain about the stolen lunches issue but in all honesty he’s not getting too involved because this more seems like a Will and Karen being friends issue not a workplace issue but he’s told Karen off at least once or twice

Karen is next and she’s usually nice to Lance but they are kind of just coworkers

Bruno is nice but coworkers

Agatha is also nice and Lance really respects her in all honesty

Koga is also nice and him and Lance talk about their kids together happily often

Now MCs

He interacts with Red for around 2 hours of time that they’ve fully been interacting (battling, Red giving champion to him after a few months bc the work of being a champion was a lot) but Lance feels the kid has potential to be the strongest trainer ever possibly

Blue was a simple Blue win but Lance has respect for the kid and Agatha seemed to have a bigger reaction then him to Blue

He’s not met Green

I haven’t read kanto pokespe so I don’t know abt Yellow

Gold also had potential but also handed Lance the role of champion back after less then a week

Silver is Lance’s kiddo and Lance is trying to help Silver through his trauma and be a good dad figure for the kid (I’ll probably talk abt this more when I get to Silver :3)

Starting with Steven who Lance usually lowers his voice around given he understands Steven is autistic and Lance doesn’t want any chance of overwhelming him

Idea!

Game!Green somehow gets transported to Pokespe world, so he hangs out with Pokespe!Red and Pokespe!Green, and G!Green and P!Red immediately get on like wildfire. They have very similar personalities, and P!Green is super jelly cause he's in love with P!Red but is convinced that the feelings are unrequited, so he's never moved forward, and he sees how well G!Green and P!Red get along and he's like, at least i know he finds me attactive too bad I can't be more like the other me. He gets sad and kinda starts pulling away, P!Red notices and is like wtf, and G!Green is there too, and P!Green says something like 'you're happy with him, i don't want to get in the way,' and he's all sad, and a light bulb goes off for P!Red, 'him and I are friends, he's with his Red, I couldn't fall for him, only you.' and P!Green kinda reboots a couple times, cause Red just admitted his feelings, then flash of light and Game!Red shows up and immediately goes to his Green, pulling him in his arms, kissing him, cause holy shit he's been trying to find him for ages, then idk

Unpopular opinion: I think Cyrus is more interesting as a character when he isn't redeemed. I understand why the appeal of him seeing the error of his ways is there, especially given how much his traumatic upbringing shaped his philosophies, but I think that many of his incarnations, such as those in the original Gen 4 games, the remakes, the Diamond and Pearl Adventure manga, and the anime (though I dislike his portrayal in the anime) are more interesting as villains. In those incarnations, he shows no sign of doubting or reconsidering his plans- in the anime, he basically opts to kill himself rather than live in the world he despised, while in the games, even during the final confrontation at Spear Pillar/the Distortion World, he insists that he will achieve his ambition, and that the player's intervention is just a minor setback. With that level of belief in his ideals, I don't think redemption would be in character, nor would it be a satisfying outcome to his character arc.

I also find that, in the portrayals where Cyrus is redeemed, it's not done in a way that provides any sort of closure to his character arc. Masters is especially guilty of this- 90% of his "redemption" is Cynthia and the protagonist(s) telling him "you're wrong" with minimal clarification, and he seemingly just decides "okay, I'm wrong" out of the blue. The part with Sophocles was handled very well, and while I could see what the writers were going for with the Commanders talking him out of it, given that he called the entire rest of Team Galactic "uniformly useless and incomplete" in Platinum, I don't exactly buy that he'd be convinced by them, of all people. My big problem with this, and with his portrayal in the Pokespe manga, is that Cyrus was never proven wrong. He was never shown that his vision for the world was going to cause more harm than good. And it would have been easy to do- have any relevant legendary (Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Arceus, the Lake Guardians- even Darkrai or Hoopa in Masters could work) show the world he would have created, and let him realize that it was a fundamentally flawed concept. If they really wanted to redeem him, that's how I think they should have gone about doing it.

Thank you for the very thoughtful ask and the opportunity to talk about my favourite character! I agree with some parts of this and disagree with other parts of it and I think you make some very good points.

Firstly, to give back a milder version of your controversial opinion, I would totally be down for more iterations where Cyrus isn't redeemed! For one thing, I would love an iteration where the commanders realize he's wrong, try to redeem him, and have to find the strength to turn against him. I think that would be interesting, and I say that as someone who LOVES iterations where Cyrus and the commanders act like friends or found family and where they're a big part of his redemption (the great thing about multiple iterations is that we can have our cake and eat it, too!). And for another thing, I think that Cyrus' absolute conviction is part of what makes him great. I actually first wrote him because I wanted to feel as confident in my own convictions as he does. I love that he's relentless and is willing to do anything- any evil, any personal sacrifice, any effort- to accomplish his goals. I love moments where he shows that, like when he decided to go further into the Distortion World in hopes that it would allow him to fulfill his plans, or when he's bleeding and wielding the red chain in Spe. I like seeing him willing to fight to the last breath.

HOWEVER, I also like iterations where Cyrus is redeemed. I'll explain why further down, but first I'm going to address the part of your analysis that I disagree most with.

I disagree with you that Cyrus needs to be shown that his vision is bad in order to properly redeem him. My reason for that is that I think that at least a part of Cyrus' ironclad determination comes from the fact that he would rather do anything than live out an unaltered lifespan in our universe. In Platinum and the anime short, he'd rather exile himself to the Distortion World. In Spe, he'd rather keep going even as he's battered and bleeding from his eyes. In Masters, he'd rather escape to a dream of utter nothingness and apathy. And as you said, in the anime, he'd rather die.

For that reason, I think you could show him a vision of people and Pokemon languishing in meaningless, empty lives in the world he's planned, and depending on where he's at he might still think that's better because he is suffering to the point where he'd prefer that. In some iterations he thinks that everyone else is also suffering and would be better off that way, too, and in others he just doesn't care about anything but his own relief. And even if such an experience did get him to realize he's wrong and quit, he'd be left utterly hopeless, with no hope for this world or the one he planned to create. That isn't a satisfying conclusion to a character arc, and realistically might still lead him to be destructive- either through senseless lashing out or finding a new villainous plan that gives him hope.

That doesn't mean that I think Cyrus should be portrayed as completely set in his ways, however. Through every iteration, they're actually very consistent with there being one thing that melts Cyrus' conviction like butter: hope for something better.

This isn't always a good thing. In the anime short, Cyrus abandons his goal to live in the Distortion World, convinced that he'll be happier there. In Masters, he abandons his plans to take a permanent nap in the woods so he won't have to feel anymore.

However, sometimes "something better" is of this world, and that's when redemption happens. I like that, because Cyrus isn't scary and dangerous just because his vision sucks. It wouldn't matter at all if he could just have his empty, meaningless world harmlessly in parallel to ours. Cyrus is the antagonist ultimately because the world and our ability to experience it is worth having and would be tragic to lose. I think that him realizing that he could actually be happy is 100% what would get him to choose a better path in life, so I'm glad that's the path we've seen in Spe and Masters. It's nice to see broken things heal, and for Cyrus, healing and redemption are and should be synonymous.

That being said, I do agree with some of your specific complaints on the redemption arcs we've seen. In both Spe and DPA, Cyrus softens on his ideas or outright changes his mind just because he had some time to think. Because it happened twice, I don't think it can be called "out of character," but it's really not my favourite part of his character and I do have a hard time squaring it with him being willing to fight for his beliefs for the 5+ years that Team Galactic existed. So, yeah, I agree with you. I think that Cyrus should have at least taken note of the trio's friendship before his cool-down period in Spe.

As for Masters... well, I only know about Masters through second-hand accounts so I might have some things wrong, but I honestly don't have an issue with the commanders being a big part of why Cyrus changed his mind. There are some iterations (and Platinum is one of them) where there is nothing to suggest that Cyrus has a bond with his commanders, and in others, like Spe and DPA, there's plenty. It seems like in the Masters iteration, Cyrus does care a lot about the commanders and they know that, even though he's far from open about it ("You're tools to me." "Sure, buddy. Let's go be attached at the hip for the rest of Masters"). Given that relationship, I think it's absolutely heartwarming that part of what caused Cyrus to turn around was to see that his commanders still wanted to be there for him even though they saw him at his weakest. I also like that Cyrus is still very dumb when it comes to emotional matters and hasn't solidly changed his mind about anything. He's just put his goal on hold and is looking at his options now that he's feeling a little more hopeful.

I'll end this off by saying that if you want a villain who 100% will never change their mind and will always go down fighting, Lysandre might fit the bill. He's also suffering because of what he's trying to do, and unlike Cyrus, it's unambiguous that he's doing what he's doing for the supposed greater good.

blue has a charizard (the most practical way to fly a pokemon ig),

green has a jigglypuff (which! actually is just a balloon with helium iirc, and she doesn't like flying types - again, won't explain why but each kid has a good reason for their preference),

silver has a murkrow (probably the most badass one, look at how silver poses)

the thing that really cements this is the actual dynamic between mantines and remoraids, it's like how certain species of fish has a beneficial relationship with larger animals like sharks (scrapping for leftovers on the bigger animal) and it's most definitely applicable with the mantine and remoraid, they have a commensalism relationship. thank you science for teaching me that gotdamn.....

☆ most of my art is based on my own headcanons!. i ramble ALOT in the tags of my work. mostly canon characters but every so often some oc work.

☆ i adore reading your comments on my posts and in the tags! your personal interpretations of my art is also welcome in these spaces. sending asks about my hc's, art, oc's and anything inbetween is very welcome

☆ i 98% of the time draw protags + rivals aged up / in a timeskip timeline.

☆ all my au's + art have the female counterpart as the main protag (with the exception of red + leaf), i do include the male counterparts but i like the girls better, sorry!

☆ multi-shipper! i'm a grown adult whos been in fandom for 15 years and has a job, i don't care about your ship drama - so please keep it to yourself. i love canon ships to rarepairs and crackships. i tag all ships in my tags, if a piece has 2 or more people with no ship tags that means its not ship work no matter how it comes across.

☆ i mostly create my work based on gamecanon pokemon but take influence from elements of pokespe, the anime, masters etc. i know the difference betweens counterparts and canons but life is too short not to have fun.

☆ maybe most controversially: i dont believe in people 'mischaracterising' a character in fandom spaces. these characters don't belong to me or you therefor everything we say is a headcanon. don't come in my space angry because my interpretation of a character dosen't match yours. do whatever you want with a character if it makes you happy - but don't bring your headcanons into canon discussions.
