Reacting to Supergirl: “Resist”

Cat Grant Has Never Sat in an Alley in Her Fabulous Life

The Setup: Kris and Miri love Supergirl. And all of us here at Reacting to Something believe in being critical of the media you love. Expect plenty of both those things in our gif-iest Reaction yet (#sorrynotsorry it’s NOT OUR FAULT they cast people with THESE FACES).

I don’t know if Supergirl always hits the marks on some of their political statements

KRIS: Cat’s big return speech was a little rough for me

MIRI: Such as the accidentally painful “Can’t believe anyone voted for the other guy” line right after the election

And the whole Girl Power speech in the pilot

I very much agree about the return speech

BUT overall I thought it worked this time

KRIS: It was silly in a gender essentialist way, though I guess I do buy that from Cat

MIRI: Agreed

And I think you were the one to point out early last season that some of the  reason the feminism is so bite sized consumable may be for the benefit of a younger audience, which I think should be considered

The whole ‘we will get this done because that’s what we do’ thing worked for me, and the line about the Future is Female t-shirt

KRIS: For me there was an unfortunate (and I’m sure completely unintentional) Trump parallel when Cat was like “I can talk down these celebrities so I bet we can also make peace between our warring peoples”

MIRI: Shit, that’s a good/gross point

Cat’s later speech that was sooo clearly anti Trump tickled me. 

KRIS: Although again I guess I could buy that sort of thing from Cat

M: I knew I’d screw up which ep we were talking about at some point--I meant “Nevertheless She Persisted�� when I asked this question. Kris responded as if I had asked about the episode we were actually discussing at the time, “Resist.”

KRIS: Hmm

KRIS: Wouldn’t have missed it if they’d gone less on-the-nose, but it’s a look Supergirl can pull off

MIRI: I’d agree with both points

KRIS: (Watching Cat’s first speech now and I do like her criticizing Rhea’s tiara)

(felt the right kind of Cat pettiness)

MIRI: I think I’m inclined to be a little generous with their political attempts because I know somewhat where Melissa Benoist’s opinions fall

KRIS: I do wonder how anyone on Air Force One expected that call to end?

MIRI: Which is not really a fair way to judge things, but oh well

KRIS: The look on Cat’s face when Rhea cuts off the call does not say “I planned for this”

MIRI: Yeah, there was no good outcome there, and I don’t entirely buy that they thought there would be

Also, the show kind of glosses over the presumed deaths of everyone else on that plane

KRIS: Yeah, in a world where Supergirl had a higher budget I would have loved a version of the Iron Man 3 rescue, which is my favorite superhero set piece of the last decade

K: Maybe ever. For me the only other real contender is the space shuttle/airplane rescue in Superman Returns. But what’s so great about IM3 is the group effort. They get to help save each other! Tony needs them as much as they need him! Plus those are real skydivers! Doing a real skydive!

MIRI: Exactly

KRIS: But anyway yeah, on balance I’m pretty good with our network superhero dramas going political

I don’t think you’re caught up on SHIELD but I’m sure you’ve heard their last arc this season was great on many levels

MIRI: Yeah, I think it’s working more than it isn’t

I actually haven’t heard much about it! Can you give me the broad strokes?

KRIS: Most All of the regulars get stuck in a really really advanced VR simulation where Melinda May never killed the Inhuman girl in Bahrain

MIRI: Whoa 

KRIS: which results in a horrific Stateside massacre, and the rise of Hydra in place of SHIELD

Only Daisy and Jemma go in in their right minds, and they have to win everyone over

K: May and Fitz are both in Hydra leadership and it’s very upsetting

M: WHAT???!?!?!? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

MIRI: Noo we have too many Nazis in real life, I don’t want any more fictional ones

KRIS: The Inhumans are used as a rough parallel for immigration

MIRI: (at least Shield admits that they are Nazis)

Oh, that sounds effective

KRIS: Yeah, there’s a part where Coulson (as a brainwashed schoolteacher) corrects a student by saying “but Hydra’s been around for centuries, they can’t be Nazis”

and later Jemma tells that kid “They’re all Nazis, every single one of them, don’t let anyone tell you different”

KRIS: You know who’s great? Katie McGrath.

MIRI: Katie McGrath is excellent!

I really liked her an Chris Wood (this is Mon-El’s name, yes??) playing off each other

KRIS: Yeah, that was fun

K: They’re such an interesting pair. I suspect Wood works harder than most of us can tell, but it can often seem like all he's asked to do is just kind of show up and be Charming. Whereas McGrath is like, so clearly Such a Good Actor -- one of the very best on the show, I think -- without the performance feeling like #ACTING. And she can really work a close-up. She almost doesn’t need dialogue to convey everything Lena thinks and feels. Some of this is that Lena’s a much richer character than Mon-El, and some of it is that dialogue has never been a particular strength of this show anyway, but still. Damn.

MIRI: And she does nobly wounded SO well

KRIS: Excellent description

I also enjoyed that Lena and Mon-El had no interpersonal baggage

MIRI: Agreed

KRIS: We’re suckers for mutual respect and affection, contra lots of our screenwriting training

KRIS: But this scene I’m watching now of Alex being the Good Soldier is a good way to give the A-story a conflict between two of our leads

KRIS: I’ve been really impressed with how both Alex and Kara have had arcs involving their rebellions against authority and/or rules that end with them being something other than just The Loose Cannon Who Is Correct

K: You’ll learn a lot about My Least Favorite Tropes today, dear reader

Alex’s poor interrogation techniques

Alex’s blind trust of her father

They weren’t just played as “Alex is Right, Root for Alex!”

which I would have expected in the season 1 version of this show

MIRI: very true, and too rare in a lot of superhero/law enforcement media

KRIS: Or most network shows

MIRI: Sidebar: Alex’s interrogation techniques are Extreme Violence and sharing hamburgers with no in between

Which is not ok

KRIS: (I’ve also enjoyed this about Skye/Daisy over the years but again I digress)

MIRI: But is also great and so her

KRIS: Yeah

I guess it’s worked in part because J’onn has been so well established as Space Dad

MIRI: I ❤️ Space Dad!

KRIS: Basically every conflict between series regulars ends up being pretty fair-handed because they’ve given everyone space to develop

MIRI: Yes, it was a nicely plotted last ep (or last 2 eps)

KRIS: And not fair-handed in a False Middle Road kind of way, but in an Everyone Means Well kind of way even if one of them is more wrong than the other

K: Caroline Siede has written a lot this season about both the virtues and the drawbacks of how Supergirl has fleshed out its non-Kara characters. What I was trying to get at here was that J’onn, for example, because he’s gotten B-stories and even an A-story or two of his own, is immediately easy to empathize with even when he does something like disguise himself as Alex’s dad to bait her into admitting her willingness to defy her orders. (He was right, incidentally, and like Allison Shoemaker I feel strongly that he should not have apologized.) Maggie in “Alex” is another strong example of someone other than Kara or Alex getting to be right for most of the episode. Even Snapper, in “Exodus,” though that was less about affection for the character and more about the writers generally being better at these dynamics, I think, than Arrow or especially The Flash.

MIRI: I am (obviously) all fluttery over Alex and Maggie getting engaged, but the real world cynic in me is a little concerned that they have not known each other long enough for this. Thoughts?

KRIS: I don’t know yet either. It’s also hard to compartmentalize the metatextual knowledge that Floriana Lima is only a recurring guest next year (I guess they originally only planned for Maggie to be around for one season? so she was already looking for other gigs)

MIRI: Ahhhhh I didn’t know that

KRIS: I’m hoping that means a low-conflict buildup to the wedding, as opposed to a protracted breakup arc

MIRI: BITE YOUR TONGUE

Don’t even put that possibility out there, Miranda

M: Upon reflection, I don’t actually know if Alex and Maggie need to be endgame (DON’T AT ME, TUMBLR). I have a lot of emotional attachment to Alex’s coming out arc, which I refused to believe they were actually going for (until it was basically stated outright) out of sheer self defense. I have been burned by queerbaiting before. An unfortunate factor of the lack of queer relationships on screen is that those that exist carry more weight than the average story arc, which can limit storytelling.

MIRI: We have not yet discussed Superman

KRIS: Let’s stay on Cat for awhile

MIRI: Ok

KRIS: Mostly because I’m watching this alley pep talk scene

MIRI: Are you just straight up rewatching the ep as we talk?

KRIS: skipped around a little, paused a little

MIRI: Ok

What are your thoughts on the alley pep talk scene?

KRIS: On a superficial level I like how well it works even with this very not-Cat staging

MIRI: Cat Grant has never sat in an alley in her fabulous life

(Although she was a stoner in college. Who knows? She contains multitudes)

KRIS: And I guess it’s deliberate-ish given her story about the yurt

Cat Grant Has Learned What Really Matters

MIRI: I did like that performance from Flockhart

KRIS: which is a mini-arc that I think works surprisingly well for having sat out so much of the season

MIRI: I am always pleasantly surprised when shows are able to use external circumstances (like shooting schedules and being in Vancouver) to good effect

When the show moved to the CW it also moved to Vancouver. Flockhart was not willing to move out for such a large portion of the year, thus her reduced episode count.

KRIS: I’m often ambivalent about Ethics Lessons in stuff like this

With Cat concluding here that Kara isn’t selfish to potentially put love over saving the world

BUT

MIRI: I think Kara more than most needs to hear that

KRIS: that Kara’s solution of working with Cadmus is then a compromise of an earlier moral hardline position complicates that beat for me -- which I would normally find a little lazy -- in a really good and interesting way

I guess that’s true

MIRI: I mean she still needs to save the world, like that’s definitely the right thing to do

But I think she needs to hear that wishing she didn’t have to do the right thing doesn’t make her less good

KRIS: Yeah, that’s interesting

I think I’ve subconsciously or not so subconsciously continued to have a low bar in my head for a lot of Supergirl’s storytelling

K: I wish this sounded less mean. Thematics in particular are what I tend not to have high expectations for, almost entirely because of heavy-handed Cat writing in the first third or so of season 1. But this season has generally been more solid in this respect, especially toward the end of Kara’s reporter arc.

M: As Kris stated at the top, we can be and often are critical of the things we love.

So I didn’t immediately expect Kara to find a Third Way

MIRI: ...it’s fairly merited

Although I think this season was less of a roller coaster than the first

KRIS: yeah, the highs weren’t as high but it was arguably more consistently solid

oh man I just accidentally clicked RIGHT to “Just be faster than me”

which is maybe the best line of the episode

MIRI: Nooooooo emotions!

Yes!

I think that’s where you see the core Danvers sisters relationship of this episode. They’re both going to do the right thing no matter how much it hurts them

But Kara has to make it

There’s no other option for Alex

M: Sister relationships will always be my kryptonite. (#sorrynotsorry for that one)

KRIS: I like the idea here that Alex, even though she hasn’t been the MOST rigorously professional this season, is trying to do what J’onn would do

And to an earlier point you made, I think this works better than it would have with a white (or I guess in J’onn’s case “white”) man authority figure

MIRI: Alex is definitely a true believer, in J’onn if not always in the DEO

KRIS: and I think this is true of J’onn’s general role in the cast as the Voice of Reason

MIRI: Good point!

KRIS: Like that’s such a Male Character archetype

But it doesn’t feel lazy here

MIRI: He can be paternal without being patriarchal, if that makes sense?

KRIS: Yeah, well put

But it’s right on that edge of unreasonably optimistic earnestness

And on the page I think Cat’s speech here could be really self-congratulatory and valedictory but because it’s Cat, it’s got an edge to it that makes it feel ... not that way?

K: Still not sure how best to put this. I think it’s that even though her words lean toward “Go Get Em, Plucky Underdogs” (which is really not a theme I love, despite being a Star Wars fan), her tone is more “No One Gets to Sit This Out, So Get Your Shit Together”

KRIS: Okay so the conceit of Kara’s speech in the season 1 finale is that her appeal to everyone’s better angels, and the Power of Love, gets through Myriad and un-brainwashes everyone

K: Fucking Myriad

MIRI: Ohhhhhhh right

KRIS: in combination with the S taking over everyone’s screens

MIRI: Yeah, that’s conceptually a bit shlocky for me

KRIS: (which does work really well for Winn and James)

MIRI: I buy it in the personal cases

KRIS: they have these little flashback montages

MIRI: Not as much for the general public

KRIS: right

MIRI: But Melissa Benoist can sell a lot

KRIS: Child Kara Flashbacks always work on me

Red-Faced is not a good episode but it has a GREAT ending

M: I think I care more about this than Kris, but I want to clarify that Kris does not hate children. He doesn’t super love them, though.

Mostly unrelated story: the first time Kris held our friend Karisa’s baby he was very uncomfortable and the baby cried. But then the next time, Kris was dramatically more comfortable. When asked why, he explained that he had realized that a baby human isn’t much smaller or more fragile than a puppy, and he had held puppies before.

KRIS: I guess Kara with Alura, specifically

as opposed to Growing Up on Earth flashbacks

MIRI: Right, that makes sense

KRIS: So obviously a big part of the reason Cat’s speech works so well is that it’s specific to a real-world moment

MIRI: I do like the idea that Kara lost more than Kal-El did (in some ways) because she can remember what she lost

MIRI: I do love Cat’s “I can see his eyes” thing re: James/Guardian

KRIS: Which sets up that long-awaited Of Course She Knows payoff at the end of Nevertheless She Persisted

I have gotten to the resist speech

MIRI: It is in no way subtle and I love that about it

They use Winn as an audience surrogate pretty effectively throughout. I like that

KRIS: Yes

I also love that Cat’s delivery stays sardonic and casual for 90 percent of the speech

MIRI: Yes!

KRIS: And she goes big for a second -- Not In My House -- but then she ends on a very Cat note

And I think a version of this speech delivered by Kara might’ve been just a touch heavy-handed for me

I mean I totally would have bought it, but I would have cringed a little too

I don’t know if I’m making much sense here

MIRI: Oh, definitely

No, I’m totally with you

Sometimes the pure Belief that Melissa Benoist pulls off so well is what we need, especially with all the Dark and Gritty out there

But sometimes things are so crap that you need a slightly more believable version

That’s a little darker and a little more lived in, but still belief

And that’s what Cat gives there

KRIS: Yeah

MIRI: It works both for the show and the state of the world

KRIS: Okay this Mon-El fight scene -- it’s not showy or anything but I love Lena’s blocking

Or I guess the way it’s shot to always focus on Mon-El but we still see what Lena’s doing

I saw this prompt the other day and was just really inspired to write my own version after reading @ofstagsanddoes version which you can find here.

It was stupid really. How it all went down. He'd never had any problems with interviews before. After all, he was James Potter, and James Potter had a way with words. Except for that one day, that one day he made a big mistake.

"James! What is your opinion on the new campaign with Molly Mitchell?" A reporter had asked.

Normally he would have made a joke, and the reporters would've smiled and everything would've been okay.

He didn't though, instead he spoke his mind. "Honestly Lou, it seems a little too excessive for my taste. We're a professional football team, last time I checked we didn't need the help of a model to sell tickets."

He realized his mistake the moment he finished; the room went quiet. Not for long though, soon another reporter asked Benjy Fenwick about his game winning goal, and James figured it was all over. Sadly, that was not the case.

It started the next day. Someone James had never heard of took to social media.

That was just the beginning. While the opinions of the others stayed noncommittal, a war broke out between the Evanders and the Potterheads. Eventually though, at about the six month mark, the fighting stopped being about Molly Mitchell. It just became a public fact that if you were a fan of the actress Lily Evans, you loathed the football player James Potter, and vice versa.

It was about two years after the original fight, a year after Lily's Academy Award, that James realized they'd have to meet.

"So James, anything new in the works?" He was asked one evening on a talk show.

"I'm actually headed to America next month to do a brief cameo on a TV show."

The host smiled. "I heard that, quite the exciting time in your life."

James nodded. "Definitely, although football will always be my true passion, it's nice to get a chance to branch out."

"Speaking of things you're passionate about," the host continued. "Let's talk Lily Evans. After all, you'll be filming on the same lot that her movie is finishing up on."

James was not prepared for that. In all honesty he hadn't even thought of Lily when he accepted the role. Keeping his cool, he shrugged. "There's not much to it.  I think the world has made it bigger than it really is."

"So you wouldn't say that you hate Lily Evans?"

James shrugged again. "I've never even met her."

That was the wrong thing to say. It was only two weeks later when he got an invite to an American talk show. The catch? They wanted a joint interview. James and Lily in one room.

He couldn't say no, he knew that. He'd just come out looking petty and childish. Instead he found himself flying out to Los Angeles nearly a week early.

James didn't see Lily before the show. They'd purposely kept the two apart. Too soon he heard their names being announced and he was directed onstage. She came from the right, he from the left, and they both failed to acknowledge the other until they were forced to.

"Well I believe some introductions are in order." The host said smirking slightly. "James Potter," he said gesturing to James, "meet Lily Evans. Lily Evans," he went on, "meet James Potter."

She smiled at him and he couldn't help smiling back. Lily Evans was gorgeous. Sure he'd seen pictures of her before, but nothing compared to the real thing.

"You two first started talking over Twitter, two years ago, is that correct?" The host asked moving the show along.

Lily answered. "Yes, we got into it over my dear friend Molly Mitchell."

"Is there still some bad blood between you two?" The host asked no doubt noting their hostility towards each other.

This time James spoke first. "Between our fans no doubt."

"We've moved past Molly though," Lily added.

"You two do however still appear to be quite harsh towards each other on social media."

James laughed. "I'm afraid that's just playful banter."

Lily nodded her head in agreement prompting the host to ask: "so there's nothing going on between you two?"

"Our relationship has been purely online," Lily said, her red hair glistening in the stage light. "I can't speak for James, but I honestly have no problem with him."

The internet blew up that night. The Evanders and Potterheads all questioned their existence. James and Lily did their best to put them at ease.

Two weeks later James saw Lily for the second time. He’d just finished his last scene, and he spotted her sitting on the curb in the parking lot.

"What are you doing here?" He asked, confused at why she’d choose to spend her free time in a parking lot.

"James Potter," she said turning her attention to him. "Aren't you going to help a girl up?" She stuck out both her hands and he obliged.

They lingered for a moment longer than they should of and by the time they heard a camera click it was too late.

"That's going to be everywhere in the morning, isn't it?" She asked looking up at him.

He nodded. "They'll probably think we're getting married."

"It's ridiculous," she said looking down at their connected hands. "Can't two people just poke fun at each other without it becoming such a big deal?"

He smiled but she didn't notice. "You should've thought about all that before you picked a fight with me."

"Maybe, but it has done wonders for my career, really enhanced it."

"Arguing with me?"

Lily nodded. "You know I really ought to thank you."

"But you won't."

"But I won't." She agreed.

James laughed as Lily relayed the conversation to him. His phone was plugged in across the room so he'd missed it all. He didn't much listen though. Instead his attention was directed entirely to gazing at the beautiful redhead who'd spent the night.

Jack’s been planning this day for a long time now. He even made a Twitter account for it, two months ago, and tweeted occasionally to build up a following (it was easier once he got that little check mark thing next to his handle). He has a few thousand followers, which is enough to get the message out, and he even has his tweet drafted.

The first draft of it was ‘hello everyone, I just wanted you to know that I am bisexual.’ Tater had taken one look at that and vetoed it. With every extra revision Jack suggested (adding an exclamation point, saying ‘you all’ instead of ‘you,’ et cetera, et cetera, et cetera), Tater had still shaken his head. So Jack took it to Georgia.

“I mean... it’s okay,” George had said, furrowing her brow at the screen. “It’s a little terse, though.”

“But I don’t need to say anything else to get the point across, do I?”

“Well, no. But it’s still very detached.”

Still, after a lot of reworking (and, okay, George does scrap that entire thing and make him start from scratch), they come up with something acceptable. Something that Jack might even say is good.

And then it all gets ruined at the last moment.

Monday morning at around ten o’clock (he’s been given the day off from practice to sort everything out), Jack opens up his Twitter account, intending to post the string of tweets that he and George have planned out, but the first thing he sees is a tweet from Kent.

And then he leaves it like that and texts Georgia that he’s already gone ahead with the plan. She still hasn’t replied to the first one, so she’s probably either working out or so exasperated with him that she’s just decided not to reply. He also silences his phone, then texts Bitty, who’s back at Samwell.

Jack: I did it.

Bitty: congratulations!! <3 on twitter?

Jack: Yeah.

Bitty: you seem kind of put out?

Jack: Kent Parson came out before I did.

Bitty: hold on i’m going on twitter rn

Jack waits for a little while, long enough for Bitty to plausibly have read both Kent’s and his tweets, and then sends a text back.

Jack: Very rude of him. Now I can’t even be the first out player in the NHL.

Jack: That’s probably why he did it, to be honest. He likes being first.

Bitty: it might also work well for u, though

Bitty: take away some of the backlash maybe?

Jack: That’s true, but it doesn’t mean I can’t still be annoyed at him.

Bitty: yeah ofc, i would be too

Bitty: anyway i gtg to class so i’ll ttyl, take care of urself today ok?

Jack: Yeah.

Bitty: text me if u need anything, have a good day <3

Georgia calls him about half an hour later and outlines the steps that the Falconers’ management are going to take, then promises to text him when they’ve released their statement and makes him promise to take care of himself today, just like Bitty. She also requests that he leave the apartment as little as possible, preferably not at all, so reporters don’t try to corner him in public. No sooner has she said goodbye and hung up than Jack hears knocking on his door. A glance through the peephole reveals it to be Snowy, Tater, and a case of beer, and he opens the door.

“Good job today, Zimmboni,” Tater says as soon as the door opens, shoving the beer into Snowy’s hands so that he can hug Jack. “Poots said to tell you he is proud. He is with trainer, pinched nerve. He will be here soon.”

“Everyone else is scrimmaging, or at least they were when we left,” Snowy adds as Tater releases Jack and steps past him into the apartment. “I don’t know if they saw us leaving and decided to let it go or genuinely didn’t notice.”

“They’re welcome to come over too once practice is over,” Jack says, stepping back to let Snowy in and then shutting the door. “But not before they’ve showered. Also, they should bring their own beer. I don’t have enough.”

Snowy nods. “I’ll text them.” He pulls out his phone and texts the rest of the Falconers, but then checks on something else and bursts out laughing.

“What?”

“Parson started a hashtag.”

“A hashtag?”

“Yup. A fucking hashtag.” Snowy shows Jack his phone screen.

“Rob Jeffries from the Schooners did,” Snowy says before Tater can answer. “Jack, just check Twitter for yourself. There’s way too many of these for me to tell you all of them.”

Besides the team Twitter accounts bickering with each other, it just goes on and on and on— NHL players deciding, on the spur of the moment, to come out on Twitter, and all of them using that same hashtag. The one that makes Jack almost drop his phone, though, is a string of tweets from someone he knows very well.

Jack looks up slowly, aware that both Snowy and Tater are staring at him. “My dad just came out as pan on Twitter. And he used the goddamn hashtag.”

“I love your dad,” Snowy says as Tater howls with laughter. “Oh, that reminds me.” He taps at his phone, and when he turns it off and puts it back in his pocket Jack checks his own— sure enough, Snowy has mentioned him in a tweet.

“God damn it, Snowy.” Jack doesn’t mention that as far as he knew, Snowy wasn’t out to anyone— him included— before just now. Maybe saying it through a screen is easier for him.

“At least I apologized in the tweet,” Snowy says. “Let’s open that beer, I suddenly have a need for one.”

They do pretty much nothing for the rest of the late morning and afternoon. Poots arrives about an hour after Snowy and Tater did, and the rest of the team barrels in through the door at around four, which is before practice was supposed to end. Jack doesn’t ask. They have, in fact, showered and brought their own alcohol. Jack turns on the TV and somehow finds his way to a TV show about hunting sasquatches, which works well as background noise, and every so often someone pulls out their phone and announces the latest NHL or ex-NHL player to have come out via Twitter. It’s an impressive list.

When there’s another knock on the door a little after six-thirty, Jack looks around, confused. Practically the entire roster is here, except Socks, who’s got a mild concussion and is staying home. Regardless, he gets up to answer it.

“Jack!” Bitty cries once the door opens, practically glomming onto him like a koala and wrapping his arms around Jack’s neck. “I saw the hashtag, and all the players, and your dad— how are you doing?”

“Okay, considering,” Jack says, holding Bitty up with one hand while he closes the door with the other. “I’ve only been looking at the hashtag, haven’t checked any of my mentions.”

“That’s probably smart,” Bitty says. “You can put me down.”

“Do you want me to put you down?”

Bitty considers. “Not really, but my arms are going to start hurting if I keep dangling off of you like this.”

Jack swings Bitty’s legs up so he’s in bridal style. “Better?”

“Yes, thank you.”

“Fine, Zimmboni,” Tater shouts from the living room.

“How do you know I’m committing a fineable offense?” Jack yells back.

“Is obvious. Bitty is here.”

“Fair enough.”

Just then, a sasquatch-y howl emits from the other room— probably the TV. Bitty raises one eyebrow. “What on earth was that?”

“We’re watching a TV show on locating Bigfoot,” Jack says by way of explanation. “It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense and the reenactments are awful but it’s a pretty good distraction.”

“We? How many people do you— don’t tell me, the entire Falconers roster.”

“Yeah. Except Socks— Sokolov. He’s staying home because of a concussion.”

“I must say I never took you for a partier, Mr. Zimmermann,” Bitty says, smiling up at him. “We’re just learning more and more about each other every day, aren’t we?”

“Oh, yeah. Friday evening I learned your deepest, darkest secrets, Saturday I learned how good of a baker you are, Sunday I learned your favorite color, and here we are now. Seems to me we’re doing things in reverse order.”

“Who said there had to be an order?”

“That’s true.”

Bitty nods towards the living room. “Let’s go that way. I want to see this sasquatch-hunting TV show.”

“As you wish.”

Cozy Reading Den DIY | Book Nook

First of all let me start off by saying welcome to #25DaysofBookmas! If you’re new to my blog thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and read up on my latest posts and if you’re a current follower thanks again for coming back!

I’m not gonna lie I thought I was pretty cool in coming up with the name of this #25DaysofBookmas series, but apparently I didn’t invent it as I had originally thought! A few years back some people had started it on Twitter as a means for adults to enjoy YA books so I guess in a way I’m sort of bringing back that tradition? *brow raise* Anyways, I just wanted you to know I’m not trying to take the credit of being the first to have ever used the hashtag, but I’m happy to bring it back to life since 2015 was the last year someone had used it! So without further ado let’s get this Bookmas party started!

Seeing as winter is a really chilly time of the year I thought it only fitting to blast off #25DaysofBookmas with a simple and fun DIY which is...creating yourself an awesome cozy reading den (aka book nook). Now you can make this as intricate and fancy as you want or more minimalist if that fits your style more. Keep reading further to build your perfect reading area!
