What program and brushes do you use when making your art?

@ravki hi! part of this is in my FAQ but i’ll say it again anyways LOL: I use photoshop CC and have used photoshop for pretty much....my whole art career. I’ve dabbled in clip and paint tool sai in the past but photoshop is my true wife, we eloped away from her awful father adobe many years ago and are very happy together. 

as for brushes... I should prob put this info in my FAQ too lol,... my default brush set is actually free to download here! Tho I will say I also use steve ahn’s storyboarding brush sometimes and lately i’ve been using shiyoon kim’s brushes A TON. Shiyoon’s cost a couple bucks but they’re super worth it imo

How do you choose colors?

This is kind of a difficult one to describe from scratch but hmm.... I’ll put it this way. Generally when I go into coloring or painting something I already have some colors in mind. Like for a certain piece I know I want a bright green, or a magenta, or a dark blue in certain areas. A lot of the time I know a mood I want. So I’ll start with that core color tone and build around it. I’ll use an example from a recent piece

So you can see here that the first color I accessed was that bright cyan. So I start with that bright cyan and then bring in its “friends” in the form of analogous colors (shown below on the far left)

greens greys etc. THEN I know I want the characters to stand out against all the blue so I start laying down warm contrasting colors for them (middle group). the mat under them is orange, skin tones are warm, ryans flannel is red etc. then to get them to work together I work more cool colors into the shadows and slightly warmer (not too warm because its a cool img overall so in this case, greener LOL) colors into highlights. 

hope that makes sense? for me choosing colors is a lot about story and composition. If you know what you want to say, the mood you want to create, where you want to go, the path to get there becomes a lot clearer imo.

Have you ever considered making an art book?

I have! But I don’t think I currently have enough...original illustrations for one LOL? Not that an art book has to be all original work but if I were putting fanart in an art book...at that point I’d just make a fanzine. I’m making more original work lately though so maybe this year....? Who knows. For now, I do have a sketchbook up on gumroad. Hoping to do one of those next year too.

Any tips for keeping background drawings from getting super stiff, especially since things like interiors have a lot of straight lines?

This is a really interesting ask. Really great question that I don’t think gets asked enough - forgive me if I get a bit art school here but I drew up some examples.

First I think we have to investigate the assumption that straight lines make things stiff. That seems true on an instinctual level and certainly proves to be true very often But I don’t think its actually the straight lines themselves but the sort of arrangements and compositions they tend to dictate. Take this for instance.

pretty big difference, right? there’s a couple things that make a composition feel stiff and one of the most significant is lines that are perpendicular and parallel to the frame. it feels locked in and solid, like bricks. but the moment you shift these angles even a little the composition instantly becomes more dynamic because our innate senses of weight, gravity, and directionality can sense movement.

But it’s not just diagonals let’s take this one step further

when lines meet and terminate together those tangents can flatten and lock space so the best way to solve this is with overlap and complete intersection, forms continuing past or behind each other feel more layered and less like a flat mosaic... again, even in the simplest line drawings. So how do we apply this to a background?

ok I drew this really fast so its potentially not the best example but I think the idea is there. This space isn’t even particularly deep, it’s basically a room, a doorway, and a hallway behind it, and we’re not seeing that much of any of those things LOL. but when you draw an environmental object like a doorway in a way that lines up with the perpendicular and parallel lines of the canvas you’re automatically flattening it and making it look rigid.

and when you create tangents with objects and characters you flatten the space around them and make it difficult to tell what is actually in front or behind or if they’re on the same plane.

GOD I HOPE THIS MAKES SENSE. Anyways. avoid those things and you’ll instantly have less stiff bgs no matter what kind of bg you’re depicting.

I wanna mention however that this isn’t to say a stiff bg with flat space doesn’t have its purposes.

sometimes you want to create parallels and tangents. it can make characters feel closed in, trapped, regimented, part of a routine, etc. it’s also great for making a composition look ornamental (especially combined with symmetry).

directors like wes anderson can even use these compositional elements to make images feel uncanny or harrowing! its very versatile. I think the important thing is to just be aware of when you are making something rigid and when that’s the last thing you want to do. conscious choices.

Apart from infinity train what shows are you watching now? Have you seen jujitsu kaisen?

Man this is gonna sound so boring but I haven’t watched a lot of tv lately.  It’s not really part of my daily routine. Let’s see... I was sort of watching Amphibia, Craig of the Creek, and the new Digimon Adventure 2020 but I keep falling off watching those for one reason or another. Also there’s a lot of episodes, it doesn’t feel like something I can just binge and be done with.

The last thing I binged was Succession. I want that show and Euphoria back so bad, when I’m done forcing all my friends to watch Infinity Train im cancelling my HBO subscription until Succession and Euphoria return so they know exactly what I’m on their list for LOL. 

I have not watched jujitsu kaisen but I’ve kept up with some of the sakuga news (I keep up with anime industry news and production info like x5 the amt i keep up with actual anime) for it and their compositing/editing looks dope. I’ve read the manga actually LOL or at least part of the beginning. I wasn’t super keen on the whole finger eating thing. Also to be honest I kinda feel like its the new Bleach and I never particularly cared about Bleach. Characters look nice enough tho. I wholeheartedly support jjk fans.

Like... I love the game to pieces and maybe this is just bc im in a shitty mood (which i am) but like... god this is gonna be long and ranty and I'm sorry in advance that mobile tumblr doesnt have the read more feature

For starters, holidays are all scheduled on the company's terms, meaning in 7+ years or so there will be no more in-game holidays because by then they'll probably be thinking about/getting ready to release the next installment of the series on whatever console is out at the time and they won't want to update new horizons anymore. And adding onto this, you need the internet to download the updates. What happens to the players who don't have internet?? Can they just never experience the holidays like bunny day and toy day and turkey day? That takes a HUGE part of the fun of the series out right off the bat. Sometimes making everything rely on the internet is a bad idea. Idk if anyone can like tell me if having no internet means you can't take part in the holidays, but like... god if that's true thats really sad.

They recently took out the hybrid flower and big fish islands, which makes no sense whatsoever why they would do that to a game that has so little, but ok?? It's not like that feature was hindering the gameplay any

There's a lot of furniture but Not a Lot of Furniture, you get me? They took out EVERY set except the classic set (renamed "antique") that you can buy for an insanely high price, and the log and wooden block sets that you can craft, but other that that it's all unrelated items that aren't part of any set, aside from the cute set and diner and throwback sets which as far as I can remember are the only other sets you can buy in the game. No alpine, no ranch, no minimalist, no princess or gracie, no modern or sleek, none of that. And 90% of all the buy-only furniture in the game is just the color variants. You can't even customize them! And it's hard as fuck to find the color variants you want, much less for completing a furniture set

And speaking of which, your starting villagers don't get their default house interiors. Your first three + your two starters from the tutorial days have the same generic layouts. You NEVER see what their houses are supposed to look like, and even if you give them the wallpaper and flooring they're supposed to have (if you figure that out online somewhere), their house doesn't change (I tested this with Sherb and was kinda disappointed).

And stuff is so EXPENSIVE. I know it adds a challenge but my final loan was NEVER 1 mil+ bells in New Leaf. And you can't even expand the extra first floor rooms you get. I'm literally getting less for WAY more. The biggest rooms you get are the basement and upstairs rooms. The first floor rooms aside from the main room really don't have a lot of space and with the different furniture they DO offer, I don't have a lot of room to put things in. But it's not like I can even afford it anyway -- just a freaking air conditioner was 63,000 bells. In New Leaf it was 2500. That's a MASSIVE jump. And the kitchen items are so freaking expensive, as well.

And speaking of houses, for someone who was literally in the real estate industry in the last game, tom nook adds very few house exterior options. And the even more shitty thing is that a lot of the colors straight up don't match. They couldn't even add a plain white roof.

God and the fucking DIY recipes. I know I've said this before on my other tumblr but the RNG for this game is the worst I've ever fucking seen. There is no reason why, two months into the game, I can be given a recipe for a simple DIY bench, which EVERYONE LEARNS IN THE TUTORIAL. Who the fuck am I giving it to?! No one, because literally every player knows it already, and you can't gift diy recipes to villagers! And I keep getting repeats of recipes. My villagers give me fruit DIYs all the time, it's so rare for me to get any new ones. And two days in a row I've gotten the recipe for the deer head mount thing from the same villager. New recipes should 100% take the priority before repeats. This game is slow paced, sure, but that's just frustrating. It doesn't make me excited to learn more recipes, it makes me feel like I'm never gonna learn any new ones because I'll get the same fruit DIYs for a week straight.

And speaking of which, you can't put trees, bushes, or flowers in your storage, which to me makes literally no sense. I can fit a giant ass fountain in my storage but I can't put a flower plant? Really? And speaking of storage, for a game that added 300 whole slots for mail instead of the usual 10, I will never understand why they decided to halve the amount of items a player can order a day from the nook shopping, AND make it so that it takes a whole day to get there instead of making deliveries at 9 am and 5 pm like in New Leaf.

And the fact that they made it so hard to get non native fruit and flowers and shit??? Like they at LEAST added Lief so flowers aren't as much of an issue anymore, but you actually have to travel to other people's islands just to get all the fruits?? I know you have to do the same thing in New Leaf but the reason why this is an issue for me is because you have to pay for online access, meaning most of those nook miles for planting all the fruits are locked behind a paywall unless your villagers can gift them to you. And your mom, when you first start the game, has a chance of giving you the one fruit that's on the non-native fruit mystery island, meaning you'll only get ONE new fruit and not two separate ones (for example, my sis got pears from mom but her non native fruit islands have cherries i believe. I got pears from mom and my fruit islands also have pears. Doesnt help that that's the one fruit i hate lmao). They also took OUT a bunch of fruits, like mangoes, durians, lemons, bananas, lychees, persimmons...

And the fact that your nook miles rewards are ISLAND LOCKED. That is the WORST SHIT. Not everyone has the ability to play with others, bc no internet or no money for the subscription every month. Not everyone WANTS to play with others bc maybe they get social anxiety (like me, which is why i havent asked for things that are impossible for me to get even though i want them for my island or house), or maybe they simply just don't want to. But the fact that each island has their own color variants of the same goddamn rewards that CANNOT BE CHANGED makes me so upset. I do not want nor should I have to rely on others to get the items I want because my game doesn't have my preferred color variations. And it's not like I'm far enough in the game to have anything worth trading for said items, nor do I have the bells.

And Isabelle does next to fucking nothing and I'm really irked about how they made her character in this game. Yeah she's cute, but that's ALL she is. She became more ditzy than anything else. She doesn't let you know about visitors in the town or the plaza or if a bridge or incline was built bc of a completed donation goal. Like really useful info to know would be if Flick or CJ is in town or who is selling stuff in the plaza. Flavor text is nice but if that's all you say 24/7 it loses its charm. In New Leaf she was helpful and hardworking and super focused and on top of things. Idk why they changed that aspect of her. I know her role in New Horizons isn't as big as it was in New Leaf, but still.

And then there's glitches that STILL haven't been patched (as far as I know anyway), like the game-breaking villager corruption glitch (which you'd think nintendo would have made a priority but they're too busy removing other features it seems) or the house exterior glitch.

And it's bad enough that your game saves to your fucking system a la Fantasy Life. But even WORSE, no one can have separate islands on one console. It's not enough to own two copies of New Horizons. Each player has to own one copy of the game and a whole new Switch just so they can play on their own islands. Parents can't usually afford that (aka $360 for each kid give or take) so for a game marketed towards kids, I don't know why they thought that was a smart move (well, I DO know, and that's because money, but still). And to top it all off, cloud saves are not supported normally. If you lose your game or your switch and aren't subscribed to nintendo online, well, it looks like all your progress is gone! And there's nothing you can do about it. And they directly claimed that they did this just so people can't manipulate the game because it's supposed to be played in real time. But people can still fucking time travel by setting the system's clock! They achieved nothing except to make the players frustrated!!! If you make a game you need to accept that the player is going to play how THEY want to. You shouldn't try to make everyone conform to the way YOU want them to play. That just makes you a controlling asshole and the game loses a lot of its fun.

This game was 60 bucks and they took so long to make it and we ended up with less than we got in New Leaf. The main thing they gave us was a shit ton more clothing items (which I really like). Like I said, I love this game to pieces and it's actually one of my favorite games right now. There's so much I love about it -- I certainly don't hate it or anything. But this game has SO MANY flaws, a lot of which are needless. And I think the kid in me just misses the days where you can pay for a game and get the whole game right away. No updates in tiny batches, no content locked behind paywalls, no day one patches, no reliance on internet connection and multiplayer... mainstream companies have all gone really downhill with that shit and it just disappoints me to no end. But because Nintendo is kid-oriented, I think that's where it hurts the most. It was supposed to be accessible, family friendly fun like back during the days of the Wii and the DS. But companies get so wrapped up in competing with each other and trying to make the most money that they forget about all that. I dunno. It just sucks.

If you read all this, god damn I'm surprised XD I got super ranty and I apologize. But I'm in a sad mood and I after learning about features they've taken out I just had to get all this off my chest. It's been weighing on me since the game released, especially since for months prior this game was all I could think about and I was really looking forward to it. It just let me down in a lot of ways, I guess.

can you explain how to do animations on csp? or do you know any good tutorials on how it works? im a bit confused

Animation in CSP can be a bit confusing (and daunting) since it’s nothing like Animate CC, Photoshop or ToonBoom. It’s pretty much has it’s own interface and quirks so it’s gonna take a while before you get use to it and start customizing it to your liking.

I don’t really know much about tutorials since I’ve learned everything on my own as well as finding very few books explaining CSP animation. Unfortunately, those books are only in Japanese and my skills aren’t at a level where I could fully translate everything. Though, I’m sure you can easily find some tutorials by a simple Google search.

Since you asked, I’ll just show you how I go about animating in CSP and set up my files such (if that’s okay and helps you).

Document Setup

So, when you open CSP you go to the Animation section and plug-in what dimensions and resolution you want. I normally use 1920x1080 (that’s standard for most video and TV) with 1200dpi. You don’t have these specific numbers though.

Once the document is set and ready you have your canvas and all that jazz. This is my workspace setup for both illustration and animation. 

Red - Canvas

Pink - Timeline

Blue - Color Set

Green - Auto Actions

Orange - Layers

Color sets and auto actions are great to cut down on time for coloring and clean-up. However, I’m still learning Auto Actions myself so I can’t give a full explanation on how to use them. But really, you don’t really need Auto Actions unless you’re doing some serious clean-up and color work. Color Sets can be downloaded ) for free through CLIP Assets. If you search animation on Assets, it should pop up with no issue. 

CSP actually updated today, so, the timeline tool bar has changed quite a bit.

Red (from left to right) - New Animation Folder, New Animation Cel, Specify Cel, Delete Specified Cel

Blue - Onion Skin (allows you to see previous and next frame simultaneously while animating)

Green (from left to right) - Edit Timeline, New Timeline

Pink - Brand new Camera feature (I’m learning this one too)

Making Cels in Layers Window

When you create an animation folder (through the Timeline tool bar), you can also add cels by pressing the new layer icon (highlighted in red above). Make sure you’ve selected the animation folder beforehand or else it won’t some up on the timeline.

Animating on the Timeline

One long rectangular box on the timeline represents 1 frame of animation. So, 2 boxes equals 2 frames of animation, 3 boxes equal 3 frames, etc, etc. Personally, I always make my key animation frames on 4s (4 frames) since it just has a steady movement. Once I finish the key frame animation, that’s when I start messing around with the timing like above.

Blue - 3s

Green - 4s

Pink - 2s

Red - 1s

This part comes with a lot of tests, meaning I export a ton of gifs to see which timing I like best. Once you get the hang of it, it’ll start to feel like secondhand nature.

Layering Key Frame Animation

I love layers. I love to abuse layers so much. It’s just much easier to organize everything when using layers. In fact, the technique is regularly used in anime to cut production cost and time. You ever wonder how anime characters can talk but only their jaw moves while everything stays? Layers. There’s one layer where they only animate the jaw moving while there’s a secondary layer that’s essentially a still image. For this section, we’ll use my She-Ra animation as reference.

If you look at the upper left corner, you’ll see a bunch a circles with scribbles like A1, A2, B5, C3, etc written. These are different layers I made for the animation. A is drawn in black for She-Ra’s body, B is drawn in yellow for her hair and C is drawn in red for the lighting effect of her sword (another Japanese animation technique). By working in layers, I can make edits faster and easier. Also, this method is really helpful for overlapping action (i.e. She-Ra’s hair). It would be such a pain to have it all on one layer and trying to avoid finished line work (or worse having to redo it all). Below is how this animation is layer:

Red - A (Body)

Blue - B (Hair)

Green - C (Lighting Effect)

Pink - Blue shadow (this is a guide for if I ever wanted to bring this piece into color)

Another application of this layered animation is my recent Owl House piece below. 

Within the animation folder, you can create a sub folder that can contain multiple layers at once. The cool thing about this is that the sub folder ends up acting like an animation key frame. Take note below how the sub folder has layers that break up the characters into its essential parts (C folder was Eda so it was one for her body, one for hair, one for earrings and one for her skirt). Again, super helpful when you have stationary animation (like a lip sync or eye blink). Or, for looped animations like this where you can reuse frames. 

Camera

So as I’ve stated before, this camera feature is new so I don’t have much information or notes on it yet. To create a camera in CSP you go to the Animation tab > New Animation Folder > 2D Camera Layer.

To enable the camera function, you need to select the animation folders that you’re going to use and press this icon (highlighted in red) on the Timeline toolbar. 

Once that’s done, those animation folders will have a lock icon appear next to them (highlighted in blue). Make sure to put the desired animation folders into the Camera folder (highlighted in red) or else the effect won’t show up. Here’s the same She-Ra animation but with the camera effect applied:

There’s so much I still need to learn about this function but overall it’s pretty cool so far. Maybe in the future I’ll do a more in depth tutorial about CSP animation since the program is up and coming in the animation industry. But until then, I hope you found this helpful!

posting it under the cut cause im a lil shy abt how silly the idea is lasjdlajskl (also i got kinda long n rambley so feel free to skim or like not read it at all)

i had this on (except it was the full version - if you click the link in the video’s description it downloads the .mp3 file so like just a heads up if youre checking it out) and the vibe totally triggered this whole idea

it’s nothing like ~original~ tbh but basically in arasulahn’s canon, her big thing is basically being someone who comes from a poor family who eventually resorts to unsavoury deeds for survival. it’s dangerous and scary and she wants to bring her family out of it, except she doesn’t really know how. she is obedient and loyal to her clan, which constantly puts her in conflict between being who she needs to be for her people versus doing what her people need but don’t necessarily want (or don’t feel is within reach.)

so the concept is: arasulahn’s family is a notorious crime family whose fortunes were drained after her father (and head of the fam) drove their family into debt attempting to launder their money through the boxing industry. arasulahn is pushed into fighting, makes a decent name for herself within local rings, and her family tries to buy out matches for their favour and earn back their moneys worth + more through bets. shit goes sideways and her fam is in terrible, terrible debt. arasulahn wants to see her family out of this and the only legitimate means she can think of is going to school and getting a good job. her father makes her promise that she’ll still fight, not supporting her decision but seeing no way to stop her. she agrees, and tries to navigate being there for her family while trying to pave a whole new path for herself.

arasulahn’s clan is a tight knit community mostly comprising of blood relations. their family tree is extensive though much of their knowledge of their forefathers and ancestors is lost, they claim to have once been a respected family name who lived richly and prospered in their home country. at some point, their ancestors were driven out by an age-old conflict, that pushed them into the land they now reside in (i’m not sure if i should use like irl country names bc?? idk???? feels weird), where what meager wealth they salvaged was lost to trying to rebuild their lives, especially through business deals gone sour.

fast forward to arasulahn’s present. her adoptive father (keeper dhavihal in her canon verse) is the head of the family, who have succeeded in making a name for themselves in the world of crime. jobs ranging from simple break & enters to complex armed robberies keep the family on their feet, and more importantly, funds what dhavihal believed to be the “way out” for their clan: boxing.

arasulahn was put to training throughout her adolescent years at the insistence of her father, who saw promise not only in her strength but her devotion and obedience. her academic performance dwindled as her focus was pushed toward fighting, all except in english and literature classes which she excelled in for her love of reading; a small comfort she could afford herself in her tumultuous family life. after high school was when she was forced to fight for her family’s future. the money made from jobs would be poured into bets made at small-time rings with the demand that they win their money’s worth and more, leaving no room for losses on arasulahn’s part. they soon learned the hard way that the only way to move up was to fix matches, which lead to even further predicaments.

her family falls into debt while trying to play the corruption in the local boxing industry, their “associates” screwing them over when they bought out matches, losing money that they’ve borrowed with little to supplement it.

finally fed up with the downward spiral she’s found herself in, arasulahn confronts her father about the fighting declaring that she wants no part in it anymore and that they need to see their family out of this mess. she tells him of her plans to return to school which he wants to support but sees no way how it’ll help. she’s not even sure of it herself because it’s been almost a decade since she’s done anything but box, but it’s the only thing she can think of. she ends up having to promise that she will still fight, while trying to get into college. at 30 y/o she gets accepted into a literature program.

i think the verse would start there. she’s incredibly anxious about 1) feeling like the dumbest and the oldest person in class, surrounded by peers more than 10 years younger than her who actually remember what it’s like to be in school, and 2) not knowing what the fuck she’s doing, and having close to no one believe in this path she’s taken

all she knows is that she doesn’t want to fight anymore. she’s good at it, but she knows it’ll kill her, and the worst part of it all is that it’ll do nothing for her family but drive them deeper into the hole they’ve dug themselves.

alright whats up guys, as jd once said, greetings and salutations!! im y and this here is julian, who i’ve known for two hours but adore already anyway. i usually play dumbass boys and he’s no exception, but i like to think he might just be a little less dumb than the rest of them. so lets jump into it!!! ♡

for starters here is his messy pinterest board that i made.. like i said... it is a mess, and still a work in progress but y’all can have it anyway!! (fun fact: was gonna make him texan but pepper called him country boy and i was triggered!!!!!!!!!!)

backstory:

 julian was the conception of two teenagers in love during the 90′s in spain; a local and a tourist. the pair were just seventeen when they became parents but it was a whole ordeal at the time because his father’s side of the family did not want anything to do with this impregnated nobody. it wasn’t his grandfather’s vision!!! his son was supposed to go into adulthood unscathed by his mistakes!!! as you can guess julian’s mom side of the family were your blue-collared society while his father’s side was more white-collared. at the time his mother was a student and helped her own mom with the family tailor shop while her father worked as a cook in a restaurant. on the other end of the spectrum, the kinney’s were in the film industry and of old money. needless to say, the two families had little in common.

the kinney’s tried to pay this girl off but her family was 100% not having it and after many arguments and empty threats they came to an agreement. said agreement was that julian would have his rightful surname and would stay in spain and the family would receive a weekly stipend for his expenses. in return no one would say a thing to the press— which, honestly was only ever a threat because the kinney’s wanted to pretend like nothing had happened. 

and so julian grew up in madrid with a single mother and the help of his grandparents. as far as he knew his father had died shortly after he had been born and had been madly in love with his mother (that part was true). the only reason he didn’t share a name with the rest of his family was because the pair had never married, which, would have been the truth regardless. everything was fine; he grew up working at the family shop, attended school, skipped school, maintained amazing grades while simultaneously spending 1/3rd of the time in detention, lost his virginity to marisol cordova in her lilac colored room, etc. he had the most basic upbringing a kid could have.

then his father died. his real father. and suddenly, on paper, he was well off. it wasn’t easy for his mother to tell him the truth when his grandfather stepped foot into the one story home like he had seventeen years ago with that sour look on his face, but she was forced to. she had no other choice. devastated as she was (and she was truly heartbroken), she told him the story of how one day during the summer of 96′ she met james kinney, and how the next year he came back. then, his grandfather informed him of his father’s will and how he’d have access to his inheritance once he turned eighteen.

it was... a lot to process, and as julian does when he feels overwhelmed, he got angry. he was very upset with his mother and even more so with this old man he was meeting for the first time who kept calling him shit like ‘his only grandson’ and ‘a kinney by blood’. it was infuriating for julian, and his mother further telling him about their weekly allowance among other expenses over the years did not help. at all.

that is how julian found out his father was a successful actor turned director, generally known for an action packed franchise released in the 2000′s. it was mind boggling— he’d turn on the tv only to see a picture of his now dead father on screen, news coverage of the deadly car accident that occurred during en route to manchester on every channel. it just didn’t make any sense and was very hard to feel sad for. besides, his mother had enough sadness for the both of them. at his funeral, the two had to stay in the back while the family tried to come up with a game plan of how things were going to move forward; james’ widow was not happy to see her husbands former lover and child at the scene. 

anyways in spite the fact that julian wanted nothing to do with the kinney’s, his grandfather had other plans. a vision of his own for the only grandchild his son had brought into the world, and that started with schooling. julian graduated and had no plans for college until his grandfather threatened to contest the will if he chose to stray from the path, and they needed the money; so college it was. a college of his grandfather’s choice of course, and what better place than somewhere closed off enough to distance julian from the outer world but elite in its own right? 

his grandfather’s plan basically is to make him successful, and being that julian has no interest in their world, he’s had to compromise and just live with the fact that julian is just going to be your regular everyday man. he’s only really doing all of this because he feels guilt over the years but not guilty enough to tell the world that there’s an extra kinney lying around (last names are so common right!?!??!) . however, he still wants him to be in the family. as in everyone in the direct family knows of him and he gets to be involved in all family affairs, etc, but julian just does not give a fuck about them fksdhjfs specially because of how they fucked over his mom and how james’ widow is so fucking bitter about the will.

ANYWAYS he’s been at the school for four years now, gets his schooling paid by his grandfather but still has a job because pride or whatever, and will hack into your shit!

personality/hc’s

i love him, he’s sweet but also not annoyingly sweet. as in yeah he’s nice and polite but has no problem squaring up due to his short temper. kind of blunt sometimes though, and either is dumb or acts dumb if he says something that might hurt someones feelings. like oh.. sorry you feel that way ksjfsdkln

super smart???? has amazing grades and constantly does his work; knows how to multitask and balance his life out (for the most part... at least until he burns himself out). an intellectual™ . not an eboy but i guess u could say a little bit of a gamer,, has tik tok downloaded on his phone, the dad friend i guess

is either in one end of the spectrum or the other when it comes to socializing. most of the time though he finds it exhausting,, talking is hard but once he does start talking it’s like shut up dude no one cares about javascript 

has a small pill problem,, he’s got to be successful somehow right !! also drinks lots of coffee and is a fan of coffee creamer, does not like the strawberry shortcake creamer though because ew. only tea he will drink is matcha green tea, anything else can suck it. 

has also developed some ~anxious~ feelings , why ? idk, light trauma i guess. his pill usage sure doesn’t help though! loser! ... tbh maybe his anxiousness has grown over the years because he doesn’t know what he’s supposed to do after school like he has money (that he tries not to use if i’m being honest, would rather use the money he gains from his job which i haven’t decided what should be. leave me alone), and will have a degree, but he’s still just questioning everything?? things have just been weird

sometime during middle school years (idk whats the equivalent of this in spain, shut up) he got into computers and... i’m not proud of this but his first hack was into this girls account that he liked and bro all he wanted to do was see some titties man thats it i promise. that crush did not work out, obvs.

anyways yes he continued down this computer path and made an app during high school!!! it wasn’t successful at all and he eventually deleted it but good for him coding and shit!!!

- super junior; so i love suju? i love them more after once again thanks to nana’s persistence after black suit came out even though i was gonna listen to it away, i already loved heechul and leeteuk but dang i really love them and so does nana. but she likes too many groups to just choose one without overthinking it ALOT

- ten of nct; i don’t think much needs to be said as to why ten is my favorite male dancer. he is beyond anything i’ve ever seen before and has my complete respect for his passion for dancing and it makes me want to be a better dancer just so i can be proud of myself

- yugyeom of got7; oH i WonDer WhY yUgyEoM iS heRE, seriously i love his dancing more than anything and all of his freestyle clips on instragram make me have the utmost love for him beyond what i already have for him

- seulgi of red velvet; i’ve watched her dancing over the years and i’m never not mesmerized by her stage presence and the way she is so detailed with how she moves

- changbin of stray kids; okay so i knew from the moment i heard hellevator that this group would be big and man did they not disappoint, changbin has one of the best rapping styles and voices i’ve ever heard in my life, his speed and his lyrics are so amazing and 3racha songs are AMAZING too like wow this man and his power over me

- jooheon of monsta x; not only has joohoney wreaked my bias list but he has absolutely one of the most unique voices i’ve ever heard, his raps are so hard hitting and i can’t ever get over them, his solo work has potential to be soty because of how talented he is

- jessi; okay so i actually had a few female rappers in mind by it kept going back to jessi each time, i genuinely love her voice and i LIVE for her roasts like yes, also i love all of her music? like she has great music i 10/10 recommend

- yeeun of clc; i don’t know many female rappers but yeeun has been one of my favorites for awhile now and i love her voice, it’s just so great to see how much she’s improved and i’m so proud

i was supposed to do some schoolwork today but i was kinda productive in that i got my 2nd dose, did groceries, cleaned some stuff, and im hoping to finish a lab tn.

hmm what else.... oh i cant stop downloading stems/multitracks from a shady russian site for pop music. idk the ppl who produce britney’s music need to organize their files better. or at least the person who leaked it needs to. ik theyre like industry geniuses or whatever but doesn’t it get annoying having like 200 music files in one folder when you don even use like 150 of them? toxic was literally 4 gb and its naming convention is trash and half of it is just guides or unused takes. i like listening to those but im looking for the actual material yk. and the SURF GUITAR which was what i was looking for seems like it cant be opened.

circus was a bit easier to organize but honestly toxic looks like a project. i dl circus for the guitar part (similarly i downloaded party in the usa for the guitar and guy by lady gaga for the synth part in the bridge)

actually, what blows my mind is beautiful dirty rich by lady gaga. its literally only like 5 instruments but that song is dumb catchy its so good. its literally just synth, keys and a bit of guitar. (plus a really strong beat, literally most of the song is just the drums) too bad i couldnt find the isolated guitar part unfortunately.

do you have any tips on dealing wirh film school and motivation? I'm currently studying film and i love movies and making them but sometimes i'm tired and all i want to do is chill and not do anything idk

yo anon i feel u very hard cause film programs aren’t the kind of coursework heavy programs--doesn’t matter if its production heavy or theory heavy programs, and if you don’t go out of your way to find tips on things like sound and video editing or lighting a scene and actually get out there to find gigs and works in the field or explore and build your knowledge on film theories and research methodologies (if you are interested in theories), you are not gonna feel like you get a lot from being in the programs. This is the hard lesson i learned from undergrad film program, cause guess what your profs don’t give a fuck about you lol. In grad programs it’s a little different cause classes are SO SO MUCH smaller and you get supervisors so they are more responsible to you but they are just as busy! 

im in grad program right now, but in undergrad i struggled with knowing what to do and im very clueless in 1st and 2nd year (im not actually even in film program in 1st year i was in one of these universities let u choose a major after you take core courses in 1st year), and when you don’t have heavy coursework and have a lot of free time on your own, its really easy to just sit around and do nothing and its really bad dude. You said you love making movies so im guessing you love the producing films, so learn more about the processes of productions: script writing process, pre-production, how to set up lighting to get the best quality of images, how to frame interesting and effective shots, getting familiar with premier pro (u can download editing softwares for free shh) Also are you in an art institute film school (im not in those, those required a profolio and are usually expensive as shit) or a program in university? cause it seems like university programs aren’t as well equipped in providing equipment and lack of budgets is a HUGE issue. i personally am VERY bad at building connections, and it’s something that im trying to work on in grad school, but build close connections with your profs and your peers is definitely a starting point. ALSO try to get videographer gigs in your local film festivals, volunteer at the school media productions places (i didnt know it was very easy to volunteer in a media production service at my undergrad uni and it was a shame i didnt start volunteering till 3rd year rip), try to get into these local events where you would meet filmmakers? im definitely trying to do that in grad school so, yeah. 

Anyways, plenty things to do, you just gotta find them. If you wanna get the mots of the program and not waste your money and/or find a career in film or media industry, you gotta get off your ass and look for opportunities and start learning on your own. its not easy for me, cause im a person prone to procrastination and bad at motivating myself, but u gotta at least try

The Wife by Meg Wolitzer: Contemporary novel about a woman’s life as a a famous author’s wife. It’s not breaking any ground and the “twist” is telegraphed pretty hard early on, but it’s well-written and I enjoyed it

Sisters of Shadow and Light by Sara B. Larson: The publisher has kindly asked us to not post reviews until 2 weeks before sale date, so I don’t want to say anything just yet about this fantasy story involving 2 sisters who are stuck in a Paladin citadel, but I’ll post my review on Goodreads Oct. 22.

What Linz is currently reading:

The Good Luck Girls by Charlotte Nicole Davis: OK so I’m an idiot and thought this book was about girls who were forced into magical servitude via cursed tattoos, but, like, as child soldiers, not prostitutes-in-training. Whoops. So given that I thought this was a very different book, I’m not into it yet, but I’m gonna try to hit 20% and re-evaluate if I finish it.

My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing: JUST got this from the library and I’m a little excited to start reading it today. From Goodreads: “We all have secrets to keeping a marriage alive. Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.”

It’s starting to get cold, so, like Linz, my chronic pain is flaring up. But who can think about that when thE NATS ARE IN THE WORLD SERIES?! We also have Dewey’s 24h Readathon this Saturday so my TBR is here too.

What I read this week:

Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern: So this is where I would normally tell you what this book is about, but IM NOT GONNA. It’s so much better to go into Erin’s books blind and I’m not going to ruin that. What I WILL say is it’s got a giant (as in world size) library. I have no words. This book was perfect and I already want to reread it. Drunk review comin sooon.

The Broken Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin: This is the second book in the Inheritance series. Parker wrote a hilarious review. Listening on audio. I enjoyed this a lot more than the first one. Maybe it’s because I understand it more? Idk. I already downloaded book 3 from the library so that’s good news.

What I’m currently reading:

  Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore: So this is a story of a family that always has 5 girls, 5 cousins. The men that spawn these women disappear, so it’s always the women. 5 ladies, 5 mothers, 5 Grandmas (abuelas), when suddenly a boy appears. He has no memories. Guys I know I’m slow going at this but some stuff happened in the book and now I’m v v sad.

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: This is our book club book for the month. Basically it’s the 1920s-ish in Mexico, and our main character Casiopea accidentally lets the god of death out of prison and he gotta put himself back together before he turns mortal and for a variety of reasons (including potential death herself) Casiopea goes with him. I am getting some SERIOUS Hades and Persephone vibes from this and I love it.

Aurora Rising by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman: This is the first in a new sci-fi series by our fave Illuminae duo. Tyler has it made, he’s gonna get the #bestsquadever. But then when he’s out practicing space stuff, he finds a ship that has a buncha dead people in cryopods, except one isn’t dead, she’s Aurora. Anyway he ends up with the last of the last crews and may have accidentally witnessed the start of an intergalactic war. So.. that. I’m really really liking the dynamic of the squad, everyone is a little odd and a little broken but they’re starting to get to know each other. We’ll see if my love for them overcomes the pace of the story (slowwww).

A River of Royal Blood by Amanda Joy: I picked this up at ALA and the cover has me hooked. Cannot wait to read it.

Girls of Storm and Shadow by Natasha Ngan: This is the sequel to Girls of Paper and Fire which Linz reviewed. I wasn’t super impressed with book 1, I’m giving the series another chance with book 2.

What Minda finished:

These Divided Shores (Stream Raiders #2) by Sara Raasch – So really loved the second installment and double love that it was a duology. I think two books was the perfect amount to explore the intricacies of the island melting pot of Grace Loray and the threat its people face from the mainland. With plant magic! Stay tuned for review. 4/5 shots.

What Minda is reading now:

HEIST by Kezzy Sparks – A debut magic-based paranormal suspense novel that I will 100% finish this week. Look for the review around when the book drops Oct 31

Ginny’s Updates:

Well, I finished my first full week as an aunt and it was delightful! I got about 8 hours of baby time today (which equals approximately two hours of reading while mom, dad, other aunt, and nana all takes naps). Also, there were some other surprises this week (no worries – no books were harmed… actually some comic books were harmed, but for a good cause).

Currently Reading:

Queen of the Unwanted  by Jenna Glass: This is the sequel to Women’s War which came out last year. Because I got the arc of that, Netgalley asked if I was interested in reading this and the answer was YES. I’m not super far in but I’m excited!

Agent to the Stars by John Scalzi: I read a book by John Scalzi a while back called Fuzzy, where the main character discovers the cutest animal ever and it turns out to be sentient and he has to prove it. This is the kind of the opposite, aliens exist but they look like the thing of nightmares but are actually super cool. Tom, the main characters, is a Hollywood agent who has been tasked with figuring out how to introduce the aliens to the public. It’s pretty delightful, the idea and the characters are fun. You can tell it’s one of Scalzi’s earlier novels as there’s some undertones of (as the news has told us) industry-standard misogyny. The main character, luckily isn’t a dick, but there’s still some statements that were a little bit cringey. Doesn’t change the fact that I trust Scalzi and I’m enjoying this book.

Finished:

Laughter at the Academy by Seanan McGuire: I’m lucky enough to have gotten this as an ARC from Netgalley. This is a collection of short stories from throughout McGuire’s career. It’s delightful to see some of the earlier stories next to things that have a more modern feel. I’m planning on writing a review for this one!

Pocket Apocalypse by Seanan McGuire: Yes, okay, I read two of these books in the same week. This is the 4th book in the InCryptid series and continues to delight. Alex has to go to Australia to try to help end a werewolf infestation. Yet again, planning on writing a review of this so I’m not going to say too much.

How Long ’til Black Future Month by N.K. Jemisin: This is another book of short stories and like all collections, some are stronger than others. That doesn’t change the fact that there’s some absolutely amazing pieces among this collection, the kind of pieces that make you never want to write a single word ever again because you aren’t going to be able to write something so good. My particular favorites ended up being a story set in a reality bubble where people are only connected via blogs and one set during Hurricane Katrina that included a set of lizards that could talk. Both of those stories (and many of the ones I didn’t mention) had this beautiful flow to it, and had these really subtle feelings of hope or dread. 5/5
