i think one of the things i find compelling about rhaegar is that he’s a very good example of how selfish and destructive a martyr complex is. from what we know, it doesn’t feel like his obsession with the prophecy was overtly egotistical — less ‘i’m great ergo i’m the prince that is promised’, more ‘oh fuck, if this is true then unless i do these very specific things everyone and everything i know is doomed’.
and yet. there’s still something selfish about that. about assuming you have to be the one to solve the world’s problems. even when it eats you up, even when it isn’t some glorious purpose but a terrible shadow hanging over you. to assume you’re the only person who can do something — and, ironically, in trying to fulfil the prophecy and prevent the destruction of everyone he lover, he doomed pretty much all of them.

Not to say that English doesn't have different degree of formality, but I don't think English has an equivalent to the tú/usted thing in spanish, or the tu/vous thing in French ?
It's not about words having generally the same meaning but with different formality / social norms, it's about one very common word changing the familiarity of the sentence. It's each time you want to use "you" in a sentence, you only have two option, and you have to chose one.
And you don't change any of the other words in the sentence.
(Well, you may have to change the conjugaison but that's it)
If I'm randomly meeting my aunt on the street I'm probably gonna ask her some variation of "Salut ! Tu vas bien ?". If I'm meeting my neighbour on the other hand, I would instead say "Salut ! Vous allez bien ?". Yet in English, you would translate them both to "Hi ! How are you ?". There is no other equivalent.
(we even have verbs for it : "tutoyer - je te tutoie - tu" for the familiar you, and "vouvoyer - je vous vouvoie - vous" for the formal you. ) (I'm gonna use these terms in the rest of this post because there is no English equivalent and it's getting tiresome to write it the long way each time)
I've been taught since I was a kid that you vouvoies strangers, especially older than you, and you tutoies friends, family, and any person with which we went "let's use tu between us" ("on peut se tutoyer ?").
But some families just tutoie everyone, while in some other you vouvoie your parents. Or some people find it easier to just tutoyer everyone, some on the other hand only permit a handful of people to tutoie them. Some time it's a generation things : my parents (and all of my uncles and aunts I think) both vouvoie their parents in law, but tutoie the rest of the family. And My aunt doesn't care about swearing in front of my grandma, or talking about crass things. But she still vouvoie her. It's how we do it in my family.
So "How do you know?" Well, first it's pretty common to talk about it when you meet someone. Like you're meeting your partner's coworkers, you say "vous", they goes "we can tutoyer each other" and that's it. In doubt, you can default to the "vous" and the other will correct you if they feel you can be less formal.*
But sometimes even knowing how you're suppose to call them isn't enough. The mother of my ex told me, I think on the second of third time that we met, that I could tutoie her. And I really tried. But my brain just went "mom of someone I know -> vous." And we stayed together a long time, and their mom was really nice so we talked a lot. Yet, even three years later I'd sometimes freeze in a middle of a sentence and use her name instead of "you" because part of me wanted to vouvoie her, like we do in my family, and the other part wanted to tutoie her, because we are not stranger and she asked and it's a bit rude to tutoie someone who asked you repeatedly to vouvoie them.
Vouvoyer someone also put some distance between you and them, and not having the option of setting that particular boundary with someone in English is a difficult concept to grasp. Like when you met someone in a bar who is a little too friendly, continue to vouvoie him can be a way to tell him to back off.
Anyway, don't get me started on the "On" (non-specific we ? I don't even know how to describe this one, depending on situation I'd translate it with they, or we, or someone, and I fucking miss him so much when talking in english), but yeah language are cool.
*it has now become more common to just tutoyer everyone, especially in the younger generations and/or everyone who's not "old family / in politics". So sometimes, unless the other person goes "I'd rather we vouvoie each other", the tu is becoming the norm. But once again, it depends.
I'm so fascinated by languages with different levels of formality built in because it immediately introduces such complex social dynamics. The social distance between people is palpable when it's built right into the language, in a way it's not really palpable in English.
So for example. I speak Spanish, and i was taught to address everyone formally unless specifically invited otherwise. People explained to me that "usted" was formal, for use with strangers, bosses, and other people you respect or are distant from, while "tú" is used most often between family and good friends.
That's pretty straightforward, but it gets interesting when you see people using "tú" as a form of address for flirting with strangers, or for picking a fight or intimidating someone. In other languages I've sometimes heard people switch to formal address with partners, friends or family to show when they are upset. That's just so interesting! You're indicating social and emotional space and hierarchy just in the words you choose to address the other person as "you"!!
Not to mention the "what form of address should I use for you...?" conversation which, idk how other people feel about it, but to me it always felt awkward as heck, like a DTR but with someone you're only just becoming comfortable with. "You can use tú with me" always felt... Weirdly intimate? Like, i am comfortable around you, i consider you a friend. Like what a vulnerable thing to say to a person. (That's probably also just a function of how i was strictly told to use formal address when i was learning. Maybe others don't feel so weird about it?)
And if you aren't going to have a conversation about it and you're just going to switch, how do you know when? If you switch too soon it might feel overly familiar and pushy but if you don't switch soon enough you might seem cold??? It's so interesting.
Anyway. As an English-speaking American (even if i can speak a bit of Spanish), i feel like i just don't have a sense for social distance and hierarchy, really, simply because there isn't really language for it in my mother tongue. The fact that others can be keenly aware of that all the time just because they have words to describe it blows my mind!

I want to emphasize something about the dungeon meshi ages.
Tumblr media
So Senshi is 35-36 here, yeah? The dwarven age of maturity is 40, and he’s just shy of it.
When Chilchuck was just shy of his race’s age of maturity, he had a kid and got married. He was 13, and the half-foot age of maturity is 14.
So, developmentally-wise, THIS is how old Chilchuck was when he became a father:
Tumblr media
This is even further emphasized with Izutsumi. She’s 17 (and actually turns 18 during the faligon feast), older than the tallman age of maturity, and still reads VERY immature to the audience. By the time Chilchuck was Izutsumi’s relative age, he was already on his third kid and had moved away from home to the city.
Imagine Izutsumi being a parent of three. Imagine Senshi having a child of his own when he was with the miners.
Like. Chilchuck was young young.

guys. caitlyn hitting vi at the end of ep 3 is heartbreaking for SO many reasons. it's a deep betrayal for vi, who wasn't expecting that kind of violence from her, from anyone but her, it was yet another enforcer hurting her, it was caitlyn (potentially) hitting vi on the wound she herself once sold her own rifle to help heal, the same weapon she hit her with, but most importantly,
it's also heartbreaking because vi has dropped everything to be the person she thought caitlyn needed; a pillar, a shoulder to cry on, a soldier, a killer; a betrayer of her own people. she became the same opressor that hurt her community, that killed her parents, that haunted her for the years she spent in stillwater. she became all of that, because she thought that caitlyn needed it.
vi has completely, utterly betrayed herself, and it still wasn't enough for her to stay.

after literal years i finally got around to downloading a pdf of the wipers times, an unsancitioned satitical british trench magazine circulated among the troops in france from 1916-1918 after the fortuitous discovery of a printing press. i have approximately five million other things i need to read so idk when i'll be able to devote much time to it, and i gotta pick up a proper copy bc it's missing at least salient no 4 vol 2. that said? i'm genuinely laughing at what i've skimmed so far

Great news for uninsured adults in the USA who want a COVID-19 booster! It now appears that ALL CVS locations are now active participants in the Bridge Access Program. The Bridge Access Program gives out free Covid-19 vaccinations to 18+ adults who otherwise can't afford one, so if you have a CVS near you, please go get one! For others who don't have a CVS near them, please go to vaccines.gov, click on "Find Covid-19 vaccines", fill out which vaccines you prefer (you can mix different vaccines if you have to so i reccomend just marking all of them for the age groups you need), and when the next page loads mark the "Bridge Access Program Participant" option to see only locations that are Bridge Access Program participants. Hopefully, other places that aren't CVS will start participating soon, so just check back every so often to see if there are any updates. The CDC Bridge Access Program website also has more details on what locations will be participating, but only CVS is appearing as an active participant on the vaccines.gov location finder at the moment.

Final Bug Fact:
The world NEEDS bugs. They keep the soil healthy, pollinate, control pests, and contribute to the worlds' ecosystem. By the end of the century, it is estimated 40% of insect species may go extinct due to habitat loss. Yes, that is very scary. But with even one beetle spared, one caterpillar rescued, and one Hollow Knight comic of all things, things will change. Because I know there's a lot more Dewi's out there than most people realize. Stay curious.

Comic Thoughts and Pictures Below!
I wanted to put here how amazing and sweet everyone has been with this comic. I finished a 75 page comic in 3 MONTHS. I am at a loss for words. That sounds crazy and it IS crazy. But man was it fun. Even on days were I wasn't able to draw due to fatigue or business, I loved working on it from start to finish. And guess what!? This is my first ever FINISHED comic :D I'm so proud of myself. I know there's some things I want to change and the art is wonky in most places...... but I'm content to let it be. What an amazing summer adventure!
I'm hoping to post the full comic on another Comic website. I may or may not edit some of the art ^w^ So I'll let y'all know when I release it.
Interested in learning what you could do to help your local insects? This is the basic stuff. Maybe make some Insect Hotels if you have the time!!! And never forget to spread the word about bugs. They need our help just as any animal on earth.

Some Batfam Headcanons because the brain never stops;
Jason hates being called "Bruce's Son". But he hates it more when hes called "One of Wayne's Orphans/Wayne's child" because fuck you I'm his son-! wait no--
With the exception of Damian, they rarely refer to Bruce as "Dad/Father". Either it didn't occur to them/didn't see the need to/thought it would be strange. But when Dick/Jason/Tim/Cass are tired or injured it might slip out. And Bruce might just crumble a bit at it
Doesn't mean they don't say it to their siblings when Bruce is out of Earshot.
"Dad said you couldn't." "What do you mean Dad said I couldn't use that mug? It's my mug!" "You snooze you lose Timmy Boy-" "Jason don't be an asshole-"
That being said Bruce says "son/daughter/child" at every available opportunity he can after he knows that they have acclimated enough that they wouldn't be uncomfortable/know they can tell Bruce that they don't want to be called that.
First time Bruce called Dick "son" in a way that meant "You are my kid" and not in a "This police officer just called me son with a brow furrow" way Dick grinned and carried on with the conversation. Later he wondered if his dad wouldn't like someone else calling him Son; but Dick thinks about the life he was given because of Bruce and thinks maybe his dad wouldn't mind.
Calling Jason "son" is a hit or miss situation, even before he died. The first time it happened he was confused, he didnt think that was the relationship they had and it made everything change for him. He got frustrated--not angry--with himself and Bruce at this sudden emotional turmoil. Wasn't he just the kid Bruce picked up in an alleyway? Wasn't he just some street rat in bright Robin clothing? (He lets himself believe that he can be Bruce's son. If for only a little while).
Tim cries after Bruce is out of earshot, it would've been a year or so after his parents died and he was adopted. He didn't think he could have been wanted like that again. Even if you think the Drake's had A+ Parenting or not, I don't think he would have gotten a lot of confirmation of being wanted otherwise.
Cass smiles, emotions carefully concealed under her expression. She's grateful she found Bruce and he doesn't mention it if she leans a bit closer in a request for closeness.
Damian doesn't expect anything less, he only appears satisfied. But also relieved that he has gotten the confirmation that yes, Bruce wants and accepts him.
EDIT 10/11; hiii, i have added Duke, Steph & a Bonus in a reblog you can find on the same blog under my 'batfamily headcanons' / 'sore rambles' tag. have fun :)
